6:12:22 > 6:12:24are quite different from on planet Earth
6:12:24 > 6:12:26due to us being weightless here in orbit.
6:12:26 > 6:12:28This experiment will aim to see
6:12:28 > 6:12:32if microgravity can affect the growth mechanisms in seeds.
6:12:32 > 6:12:35Now that these seeds have been on the International Space Station,
6:12:35 > 6:12:37I'll be packing them up at the end of their mission,

6:13:49 > 6:13:51that's been cleaned out. Why is that?
6:13:51 > 6:13:52Well, we use the milk carton,
6:13:52 > 6:13:53I've cut one up earlier,
6:13:53 > 6:13:55to make these labels.
6:13:55 > 6:13:58We need to label in the cells here, where every seed is going to go.
6:13:58 > 6:14:00- It's opaque, so it lets light through.- Clever, OK.
6:14:00 > 6:14:02It means lots of light gets to our seeds.
6:14:02 > 6:14:04OK, now, we've got our seeds.
6:14:04 > 6:14:08Some are red, some are blue in a blue packet. Why the difference?
6:14:08 > 6:14:11One of these has been to space, one's been down here on Earth.

6:14:13 > 6:14:16And what exactly are they going to grow into when we plant them?
6:14:16 > 6:14:19Of course they are going to grow into salad rocket - rocket leaves
6:14:19 > 6:14:21- that you might eat in a salad. - Oh, yes, we've got some here.

6:14:28 > 6:14:31So what are we trying to find out from this experiment?
6:14:31 > 6:14:34Well, we know on the ISS, when we see Tim,
6:14:34 > 6:14:36- there isn't much gravity.- Ah.- OK?
6:14:36 > 6:14:38Now, plants depend on gravity.
6:14:38 > 6:14:41It's gravity that allows plants' roots to grow down towards...
6:14:41 > 6:14:44- And find water and for shoots grow up and find the light.- Yes.
6:14:44 > 6:14:47So they might be a bit confused when there's been no gravity.
6:14:47 > 6:14:50- There's also high levels of radiation.- Sure.
6:14:50 > 6:14:53We don't know what the impact of that is going to be on those seeds
6:14:53 > 6:14:55- but children are going to help us find out.- I love that -
6:14:55 > 6:14:58that you don't actually know the results to this experiment.

6:17:30 > 6:17:33And so for our next task, the Blue Peter bosses had to choose very

6:17:39 > 6:17:41The famous Blue Peter garden has been

6:17:56 > 6:17:59When we moved it in 2012 to our new home in Salford,

6:18:07 > 6:18:10Four years later, the garden's blooming.
6:18:10 > 6:18:12Spring is in the air
6:18:12 > 6:18:15and that is great news for the Blue Peter garden,

6:18:19 > 6:18:22For starters, we have hand, foot and paw prints
6:18:22 > 6:18:25of some rather famous Blue Peter presenters.

6:19:04 > 6:19:06Well, you said spring cleaning so I've come prepared
6:19:06 > 6:19:11- for a bit of dusting.- No, I meant clean the pond in springtime.
6:19:13 > 6:19:14Yeah, yeah, I mean...
6:19:14 > 6:19:18I knew that because otherwise I'd look a bit silly.
6:19:19 > 6:19:22Unlike a fish tank, ponds don't need regular cleaning,
6:19:22 > 6:19:25but from the amount of fish poo and leaves in ours,
6:19:25 > 6:19:26we know a tidy-up is due.
6:19:26 > 6:19:28But we're not doing it alone.
6:19:28 > 6:19:32On hand is a man who knows his fish, pond expert Chris.
6:19:32 > 6:19:34Chris and I are just filling up this holding tank
6:19:34 > 6:19:38to give the fish somewhere nice to live while we clean their pond.

6:20:29 > 6:20:33Nicely done, Naomi, but there's a problem over at the fish tub.
6:20:33 > 6:20:37Chris, I am shocked at how many fish there are in this tub.
6:20:37 > 6:20:40- How many are there?- There are 24. They are all in perfect health.
6:20:40 > 6:20:43And are all of these fish going to go back into the pond?
6:20:43 > 6:20:46- No, it would be better if we rehouse some of them.- A bit more space.
6:20:46 > 6:20:48A lot more space for them, yes.
6:20:48 > 6:20:51Although they're healthy, our pond can't sustain this many fish.
6:20:51 > 6:20:55So Chris will make sure some of them find a happy new home.
6:20:55 > 6:20:57Right, back to the job in hand.
6:20:57 > 6:21:00The pond is almost empty, there's just the lovely job
6:21:00 > 6:21:02of removing the silt and sludge.

6:21:05 > 6:21:08Yeah, I'm glad I'm not going in there. Disgusting!
6:21:08 > 6:21:11I mean, I'd have loved to but I don't have any gloves.

6:21:14 > 6:21:17The silt will actually be used as a fertiliser to help

6:22:06 > 6:22:08They're quite happy just floating in the water
6:22:08 > 6:22:12and those will provide lots of oxygen for our fish.
6:22:12 > 6:22:14So the clean-up is complete.
6:22:14 > 6:22:17But Chris has a special surprise for us -
6:22:17 > 6:22:20two new fish carefully selected for our pond.
6:22:20 > 6:22:23They're called shubunkins and they're very suitable for this
6:22:23 > 6:22:26type of pond because they produce a lot less waste than other fish.
