6:02:15 > 6:02:17Come on in, guys!

6:02:19 > 6:02:22Steph, Kristian, Ellie in the house.

6:02:22 > 6:02:25Guys, thank you so much for coming on to Blue Peter to help us

6:02:25 > 6:02:29- celebrate the Blue Peter Sport Badge 2016. Shall I show it to you?- Go on.

6:02:29 > 6:02:33Here we go. Look at that!

6:02:33 > 6:02:36So, we have the 2013 badge, the 2014 badge,

6:02:36 > 6:02:40the 2015 badge and the one we're here for - the 2016 badge,

6:02:40 > 6:02:43designed by our competition winner, Sam.

6:02:43 > 6:02:46Here's a picture of him looking absolutely thrilled to bits

6:02:46 > 6:02:49with his badge. And, by the way, check this out.

6:02:49 > 6:02:51This is Sam with his very own

6:02:51 > 6:02:54billboard on one of the busiest streets in all of Manchester.

6:02:54 > 6:02:56He's officially a celebrity. Sporting celeb.

6:02:56 > 6:02:58So, please keep an eye out for all of his billboards -

6:02:58 > 6:03:00he's now a legend, it's official.

6:03:00 > 6:03:02You guys know that this little

6:03:02 > 6:03:04badge is all about inspiring a family member, a friend -

6:03:04 > 6:03:07basically anyone - to get involved with sport,

6:03:07 > 6:03:09so what inspired you three to start sport? Steph.

6:03:09 > 6:03:11I think for me it was my dad.

6:03:11 > 6:03:13I think ever since I was able to walk or run,

6:03:13 > 6:03:15it was always a ball at my feet, and ever since then,

6:03:15 > 6:03:18I love the sport, and thankfully it's my job now.

6:03:18 > 6:03:22Nyree Lewis inspired me to want to go and set my dream and

6:03:22 > 6:03:27set my target to go to a Paralympics and get a gold medal.

6:03:27 > 6:03:30- And you did that, by the way. Just in case you're wondering.- Thank you.

6:03:30 > 6:03:32Kristian, what about yourself?

6:03:32 > 6:03:33I don't like telling my brother too often,

6:03:33 > 6:03:36but it's actually thanks to him, because he was always the one

6:03:36 > 6:03:38with the excess energy, and climbing things

6:03:38 > 6:03:41and getting into mischief, so my parents just took him to a gym

6:03:41 > 6:03:44club and I just wanted to follow and do exactly what he did, and luckily

6:03:44 > 6:03:47I found a sport that I was good at and really enjoyed from a young age.

6:03:47 > 6:03:49- We're in the presence of sporting legends.- We are.

6:03:49 > 6:03:50I'm going to be embarrassed

6:03:50 > 6:03:53when they see our films later of us trying sport. Not good.

6:03:53 > 6:03:56Anyway, today... Thank you, guys, we'll be chatting to you later.

6:03:56 > 6:03:59..we are going to be playing Spot Shelley. It's a fun old game.

6:03:59 > 6:04:01- She's there!- I know she's there - this one doesn't count.

6:04:01 > 6:04:03But if you see her later on in the show, hiding

6:04:03 > 6:04:07somewhere in the studio, head online and let us know.

6:04:07 > 6:04:09I think it's pretty fair to say that we are in

6:04:09 > 6:04:12the midst of great people, inspirational people.

6:04:12 > 6:04:17- Well, I got inspired myself, because I tried a brand-new sport.- Uh-oh.

6:04:18 > 6:04:23The most important thing about any Blue Peter challenge is preparation.

6:04:25 > 6:04:27You've got to know what you're doing

6:04:27 > 6:04:29and you need the right equipment.

6:04:30 > 6:04:34So when I was told I was taking on roller derby, I knew exactly

6:04:34 > 6:04:37what was needed.

6:04:37 > 6:04:40'My snazzy hair rollers.'

6:04:40 > 6:04:43Oh, no.

6:04:43 > 6:04:46I've completely got this wrong.

6:04:46 > 6:04:49Roller derby is actually a fast-paced, frenetic

6:04:49 > 6:04:50sport on roller skates.

6:04:52 > 6:04:57Created in America way back in the 1930s, it involves players trying

6:04:57 > 6:05:02to lap each other around a track, and it's now becoming popular here.

6:05:02 > 6:05:04So, I'm going to give it a go.

6:05:06 > 6:05:10And Emma from the Leeds Roller Dolls is going to help me.

6:05:10 > 6:05:13Or, should I call her Tricksy?

6:05:13 > 6:05:15"Tricksy." Where's that from?

6:05:15 > 6:05:17It's because I mess around on track,

6:05:17 > 6:05:19and everyone gets their own name in roller derby.

6:05:19 > 6:05:22- And do I need to make my own name up for this?- That would be great,

6:05:22 > 6:05:24if you could, I'm sure the girls will help you.

6:05:24 > 6:05:26OK, that is definitely happening.

6:05:26 > 6:05:29Tricksy has arranged for me to train with the girls junior team,

6:05:29 > 6:05:32but how do you play roller derby?

6:05:32 > 6:05:36Well, two teams of five people go head-to-head on track.

6:05:36 > 6:05:39They're made up of blockers and jammers.

6:05:39 > 6:05:42Here, the blockers are trying to stop the jammer scoring

6:05:42 > 6:05:44points by skating past them.

6:05:44 > 6:05:46Staying within the orange lines of the track,

6:05:46 > 6:05:49the jammer has to try and complete a lap,

6:05:49 > 6:05:52and they score points for every person they skate past.

6:05:54 > 6:05:55I've seen how points are scored,

6:05:55 > 6:05:58but I've never seen how you stop people from scoring.

6:05:58 > 6:05:59How do you do that?

6:05:59 > 6:06:02Well, what you have to do is you use your body to stop them.

6:06:02 > 6:06:05What we'll be doing today is positional blocking, which means I

6:06:05 > 6:06:08can move in front of you and things, but I can't throw a hit into you.

6:06:08 > 6:06:11- Do I need any equipment? - Yes, you need a couple of bits.

6:06:11 > 6:06:17- Two wrist guards.- Of course, yes. Thank you.- Elbows. For falling.

6:06:17 > 6:06:19Kneepads. For falling.

6:06:19 > 6:06:22Skates. Probably for falling.

6:06:22 > 6:06:27- And a helmet. - Right, OK. Thanks, Tricksy.

6:06:27 > 6:06:29Better, uh, get my skates on. Ha!

6:06:31 > 6:06:35And now I've got my gear on, I've come up with my name.

6:06:35 > 6:06:38Let me introduce you to Ra...

6:06:40 > 6:06:41Radical Radzi.

6:06:43 > 6:06:47Ahem! Roller derby is a sport that both boys and girls can play,

6:06:47 > 6:06:50but it does help if you can roller skate.

6:06:50 > 6:06:54So I'm going to have a go at some training drills.

6:06:54 > 6:06:56If you're going to play roller derby,

6:06:56 > 6:06:58you need to be able to do our obstacle course.

6:06:58 > 6:07:01- An obstacle course? - Show him, girls.

6:07:03 > 6:07:05'What, that? Looks easy.

6:07:10 > 6:07:12'OK, it turns out it's not that easy.'

6:07:12 > 6:07:14It's fine.

6:07:14 > 6:07:18The next thing we need you to be good at for roller derby is speed.

6:07:18 > 6:07:22- OK.- I was thinking a game of tag. - Amazing, I love tag.

6:07:22 > 6:07:24- OK, bring in the girls.- What, more?

6:07:24 > 6:07:28# Here come the girls

6:07:28 > 6:07:31# Here come the girls... #

6:07:31 > 6:07:34'The aim of this exercise is to try and grab a coloured bib.

6:07:34 > 6:07:35'It should help me

6:07:35 > 6:07:38get used to quickly changing direction on skates.'

6:07:38 > 6:07:42I'm not very good at this. 'But then...'

6:07:42 > 6:07:44Oh!

6:07:44 > 6:07:46We got a bib!

6:07:46 > 6:07:48Tricksy, you've put me through my paces.

6:07:48 > 6:07:52- Am I ready to hold my own against these girls?- Absolutely not.

6:07:52 > 6:07:55OK, I've read between the lines and I'm going to give it a go anyway.

6:07:55 > 6:07:57Wish me lots...

6:07:59 > 6:08:02'Here we go, one 30-minute game of roller derby.

6:08:02 > 6:08:06'I'm going to be the jammer, so it's up to me to skate past the blockers,

6:08:06 > 6:08:10'get round the track and overtake the other team to score points.

6:08:10 > 6:08:11'Ha! Doddle.

6:08:13 > 6:08:16'Getting past those blockers and staying within the orange

6:08:16 > 6:08:19line limits for the track is actually really hard.

6:08:21 > 6:08:25'Every time I go outside of the track...' No!

6:08:25 > 6:08:27'..it's a foul.

6:08:28 > 6:08:31'And although I'm a beginner,

6:08:31 > 6:08:33'this youth team aren't going easy on me.'

6:08:35 > 6:08:38I've scored no points.

6:08:40 > 6:08:43'The only way I'm going to get past is with a little trick.'

6:08:44 > 6:08:46Your shoelaces are undone.

6:08:49 > 6:08:50'I can't believe it worked!

6:08:50 > 6:08:53'I've made it past the blockers!

6:08:53 > 6:08:56Now, all I need to do is try and get round the track

6:08:56 > 6:08:59'and lap the other team to score some points.

6:08:59 > 6:09:02'But once again, my skating skills let me

6:09:02 > 6:09:04'down and I go outside of the orange lines.

6:09:07 > 6:09:12'At least it's progress. Maybe I CAN actually score points.'

6:09:12 > 6:09:14I just need to stay on the track.

6:09:14 > 6:09:16WHISTLE

6:09:16 > 6:09:18I'm getting the hang of this, just about.

6:09:18 > 6:09:20It's amazing what you learn... Yeah?

6:09:20 > 6:09:22Just to inform you, you've just got seven penalties.

6:09:22 > 6:09:24That means you're fouled out

6:09:24 > 6:09:25So if you'd like to remove your skates

6:09:25 > 6:09:27and return to your bench area.

6:09:27 > 6:09:30Oh! Oh! I'm off!

6:09:32 > 6:09:34'I've left the track so many times, I'm out.

6:09:34 > 6:09:38'It just goes to show how tough this sport is.

6:09:38 > 6:09:42'And although I've absolutely loved having a go at roller derby,

6:09:42 > 6:09:46'I'm not sure my team is going to miss Radical Radzi.'

6:09:48 > 6:09:50Roller derby, what a sport.

6:09:50 > 6:09:52Now, though, I want to talk about inspiration.

6:09:52 > 6:09:54So, Steph, we'll start with yourself.

6:09:54 > 6:09:57So, you are the England and Man City women's football captain.

6:09:57 > 6:10:00So how do you inspire your team-mates before a match?

6:10:00 > 6:10:03For me, it's just all about having them conversations with the girls,

6:10:03 > 6:10:05and making sure that they're OK and they're up for the game.

6:10:05 > 6:10:07And obviously the team huddle, as well -

6:10:07 > 6:10:10it's important what I say to gauge how the girls are feeling.

6:10:10 > 6:10:13And, for me, to just play as well as I possibly can

6:10:13 > 6:10:16and lead by example throughout the game and in training, as well.

6:10:16 > 6:10:18And you do just that. And Kristian,

6:10:18 > 6:10:19I took part in a gymnastics challenge

6:10:19 > 6:10:21myself on Blue Peter and it wasn't until then that

6:10:21 > 6:10:25I realised how popular gymnastics is with all the viewers at home.

6:10:25 > 6:10:27So how do you feel to think you are inspiring

6:10:27 > 6:10:30millions of people to potentially take up gymnastics?

6:10:30 > 6:10:31I mean, it's absolutely fantastic.

6:10:31 > 6:10:34It really is a great feeling to know that I've been part of helping

6:10:34 > 6:10:37to raise the profile of the sport over the last ten years.

6:10:37 > 6:10:39And we seem to be getting bigger and bigger and bigger.

6:10:39 > 6:10:41And that can only be a good thing for the sport.

6:10:41 > 6:10:44And, as I said, to be part of that and to be inspiring people,

6:10:44 > 6:10:46whether they are doing it at schools,

6:10:46 > 6:10:49after-school clubs, wherever it is, yeah, it's a great feeling.

6:10:49 > 6:10:50And Ellie, where do we start with yourself?

6:10:50 > 6:10:53Whether it's your world records, your Paralympic gold medals

6:10:53 > 6:10:56or your Blue Peter Gold badge... I mean, when you're on the start line,

6:10:56 > 6:11:00and you're about to enter the water, how do you handle that pressure?

6:11:00 > 6:11:01Some days I don't know how I do it.

6:11:01 > 6:11:05I think sometimes I get really nervous and just be able

6:11:05 > 6:11:08to cope with it. I think you've got to use the confidence from all

6:11:08 > 6:11:12the training, and this is something that I love to do - swimming -

6:11:12 > 6:11:14so I just go out there and race and just enjoy it.

6:11:14 > 6:11:17Well, talking about pressure, you at home have kindly sent

6:11:17 > 6:11:21in the questions that you'd like us to ask the superstars on the show.

6:11:21 > 6:11:25But there's a little bit of a catch. You've 90 seconds in which to do so.

6:11:25 > 6:11:26- Are you up for it?- Yes.

6:11:26 > 6:11:29Without further ado, three, two, one, off we go.

6:11:29 > 6:11:32Steph Beige Caramel Chicken - Steph, what made you pick football?

6:11:32 > 6:11:33My dad, really.

6:11:33 > 6:11:35Ellie, Olive Sweet Onion -

6:11:35 > 6:11:38how often do you train and how do you feel after you train?

6:11:38 > 6:11:39So I train nine times a week

6:11:39 > 6:11:42and sometimes, after, I just want to sleep for days.

6:11:42 > 6:11:45I don't blame you! Kristian, Carmine Chatty Turtle -

6:11:45 > 6:11:47what was your favourite sports day activity?

6:11:47 > 6:11:48Egg-and-spoon race.

6:11:48 > 6:11:50Good. Kristian again, Peach Riding Zebra -

6:11:50 > 6:11:53when did you realise you wanted to become an Olympian?

6:11:53 > 6:11:56Er, when I was probably about 14 years old.

6:11:56 > 6:11:59Steph, Peach Calm Seahorse - what's your favourite emoji?

6:11:59 > 6:12:02Er, the one with the hands over the face.

6:12:02 > 6:12:03Nice!

6:12:03 > 6:12:05We don't have many!

6:12:05 > 6:12:08Ellie, Crimson Party Butterfly - good name -

6:12:08 > 6:12:10what tips would you give to children to get into sport?

6:12:10 > 6:12:14Just go out there and find a sport that you really enjoy and have fun.

6:12:14 > 6:12:17This positivity's what I love. Ellie, Sapphire Sowing Lemur says -

6:12:17 > 6:12:20What foods do you eat for breakfast to keep fit?

6:12:20 > 6:12:22Oh, I like anything, but I think porridge at the minute.

6:12:22 > 6:12:23I'm really into it.

6:12:23 > 6:12:26Nice. Steph, Ginger Symbol Dude says -

6:12:26 > 6:12:29what is it like to be an England captain?

6:12:29 > 6:12:31Unbelievable feeling.

6:12:31 > 6:12:32Ellie, Red Black Summery Puffin -

6:12:32 > 6:12:35what's your favourite subject at school?

6:12:35 > 6:12:36History.

6:12:36 > 6:12:37History.

6:12:37 > 6:12:39Kristian, Lime Sparkly Go -

6:12:42 > 6:12:44James, middle name!

6:12:45 > 6:12:47Steph, Too Bling Badger -

6:12:47 > 6:12:49do you have any pets and what are their names?

6:12:49 > 6:12:51I have a dog called Ollie.

6:12:51 > 6:12:52Ellie, Star Stone Musical Mosquito -

6:12:52 > 6:12:55if you had a celebrity brother or sister, who would it be and why?

6:12:55 > 6:12:58Erm, David Beckham, because he's cool.

6:12:58 > 6:12:59WHISTLE

6:12:59 > 6:13:03Oh! Give these guys a round of applause!

6:13:03 > 6:13:05Oh, my goodness gracious.

6:13:05 > 6:13:09Well, now, however, it is time to get behind the Team GB greats.

6:13:11 > 6:13:14And if you want to do that, you can win yourself one of these.

6:13:14 > 6:13:18The Blue Peter Sport badge is all about inspiring others to

6:13:18 > 6:13:20take part in sport.

6:14:56 > 6:14:58She's ahead of the game, because she's done me there,

6:14:58 > 6:15:00and it says, "321...hockey!"

6:15:02 > 6:15:04Well, Bethan, keep your eyes peeled -

6:15:04 > 6:15:06you'll see that film very soon.

6:15:06 > 6:15:08Now, Oscar from Cambridgeshire, you've done something

6:15:08 > 6:15:10which I've never tried, and that's fencing.

6:15:10 > 6:15:12Look at this wonderful picture you've got here.

6:15:12 > 6:15:15Inside the Blue Peter shield is you, fencing.

6:15:15 > 6:15:16You said you enjoyed it so much,

6:15:16 > 6:15:18you've even joined your local fencing club.

6:15:18 > 6:15:21And that has earned you a Blue badge. Well done, Oscar.

6:15:21 > 6:15:24August, who's ten, from Norwich, has sent this in. Check it out.

6:15:24 > 6:15:27It's all three of us doing our little sporty challenges.

6:15:27 > 6:15:29Barney here, he's a bit sweaty because the sun's out

6:15:29 > 6:15:31and he's on his bike but look, the wheel goes round

6:15:31 > 6:15:32and round. We love that.

6:15:32 > 6:15:34And then you've got me next to my football

6:15:34 > 6:15:36doing my refereeing challenge.

6:15:36 > 6:15:39I've got a yellow card, and, of course, the dreaded red card, there.

6:15:39 > 6:15:41Then you've got the muscliest man ever -

6:15:41 > 6:15:43it's actually Radzi training with Daniel.

6:15:43 > 6:15:46He's got the gym kit, and up here it says, "Go, Radzi!"

6:15:46 > 6:15:49We love that. Thank you. You've earned yourself a badge. Well done.

6:15:49 > 6:15:51And thank you to every single one of you

6:15:51 > 6:15:53who sent in some fantastic post you can see here.

6:15:53 > 6:15:55That's right. Now, it wasn't just Radzi

6:15:55 > 6:15:57who took on a sporting challenge this week.

6:15:57 > 6:15:59I picked up my hockey stick and had a go, as well.

6:16:02 > 6:16:04It's hard to believe it's been nearly four years

6:16:04 > 6:16:08since the 2012 Olympics came to London.

6:16:08 > 6:16:11Words cannot do justice to how I feel.

6:16:11 > 6:16:13This is a tremendous run by Jessica Ennis.

6:16:13 > 6:16:16The action, the atmosphere, and of course the glory.

6:16:16 > 6:16:18CHEERING

6:16:18 > 6:16:20Have you ever seen anything like that?

6:16:20 > 6:16:23It aimed to be an event that inspired a generation.

6:16:23 > 6:16:27And one of those people that was lucky enough to experience it

6:16:27 > 6:16:30was 16-year-old Lily Owsley.

6:16:30 > 6:16:35Lily saw Team GB play hockey and decided to have a go at the sport.

6:16:35 > 6:16:37After four years of sheer dedication,

6:16:37 > 6:16:39she's made it into the squad

6:16:39 > 6:16:43that will be hoping for Olympic gold in Rio. What a story!

6:16:46 > 6:16:49Now, I've played a little bit of hockey before,

6:16:49 > 6:16:52but I'm going to find out how you become an international athlete

6:16:52 > 6:16:55in such a short space of time.

6:16:56 > 6:16:58This is the home of British hockey and it's where Lily

6:16:58 > 6:17:02and the team are busy training for the Olympics.

6:17:02 > 6:17:03Hang on, was that...?

6:17:03 > 6:17:05Nah, must've been my imagination.

6:17:07 > 6:17:09- Lily!- Hi!- Good to meet you, how you doing?

6:17:09 > 6:17:11Yeah, good, thank you.

6:17:11 > 6:17:13Now, when you were sat watching

6:17:13 > 6:17:15the Olympics in 2012, watching the hockey,

6:17:15 > 6:17:20did you ever imagine that in 2016 you would actually be going

6:17:20 > 6:17:22and taking part and representing GB?

6:17:22 > 6:17:24Not at all.

6:17:24 > 6:17:26Honestly, I was watching it with my family

6:17:26 > 6:17:27and I was kind of like, "Wow!"

6:17:27 > 6:17:30I had no idea international hockey could be this amazing,

6:17:30 > 6:17:32these girls could be so good at hockey.

6:17:32 > 6:17:34And you haven't always played hockey, have you?

6:17:34 > 6:17:37It's quite a new sport to you. So how did you get so amazing?

6:17:37 > 6:17:39I was an athlete. I was an 800-metre runner and a footballer,

6:17:39 > 6:17:42so I kind of had the physical attributes

6:17:42 > 6:17:43and I'm about team sport

6:17:43 > 6:17:46and it was kind of just getting that hockey side of things,

6:17:46 > 6:17:48yeah, I guess it's pretty important.

6:17:48 > 6:17:50Now, at Blue Peter, we love getting involved,

6:17:50 > 6:17:52so can you show me some skills?

6:17:52 > 6:17:54Yeah, of course, and get you some kit.

6:17:54 > 6:17:57Brilliant, sounds good, let's do it.

6:17:57 > 6:18:00Right, what we're going to do is dribble round the cones,

6:18:00 > 6:18:02and it's for your hand-eye coordination.

6:18:02 > 6:18:05- Yeah, you go first.- Yeah, and you just copy exactly what I do.

6:18:09 > 6:18:11'Wow, that is fast!

6:18:11 > 6:18:12'Let's see how I compare.'

6:18:12 > 6:18:14Nice.

6:18:14 > 6:18:15Oh, I hit a cone.

6:18:15 > 6:18:19It's all right, it's all right, it's fine. Didn't see it!

6:18:19 > 6:18:20Oh!

6:18:20 > 6:18:23How do you think we'll get on that Rio?

6:18:23 > 6:18:26I think we'll win gold. Definitely.

6:18:26 > 6:18:29You don't train, like, every day, day in, day out, to win silver.

6:18:29 > 6:18:30We think we can win gold,

6:18:30 > 6:18:32and, yeah, that's what we're going to try and do.

6:18:32 > 6:18:34Walsh, yes!

6:18:34 > 6:18:36What do friends and family make of all this?

6:18:36 > 6:18:38Do they think it's amazing that you're going to Rio

6:18:38 > 6:18:40and representing Team GB?

6:18:40 > 6:18:41Oh, they absolutely love it.

6:18:41 > 6:18:44Like, my friends and family, yeah, first people to get behind me.

6:18:44 > 6:18:47Well, listen, good luck in Rio. Thank you for today.

6:18:47 > 6:18:49I think I've got my hockey skills up there.

6:18:49 > 6:18:51Oh, no, we're definitely not finished.

6:18:51 > 6:18:53I've got another challenge for you.

6:18:53 > 6:18:54We'll see what happens.

6:18:54 > 6:18:57I thought that might happen!

6:18:57 > 6:19:00It's time to see how I measure up against a Team GB athlete.

6:19:02 > 6:19:05The challenge today is to score a penalty against me, but first

6:19:05 > 6:19:09you have to dribble past one of the meanest defenders in the game.

6:19:09 > 6:19:11Radzi and Barney? LILY LAUGHS

6:19:11 > 6:19:13Do you know what? I knew I'd seen them today somewhere.

6:19:13 > 6:19:15'Game on.

6:19:15 > 6:19:17'Can I put my brand-new dribbling skills to the

6:19:17 > 6:19:22'test against one of Britain's best hockey players and, er...

6:19:22 > 6:19:23'Well, these two?

6:19:26 > 6:19:29'Straight away, I leave Radzi standing.

6:19:30 > 6:19:32'Barney freezes.

6:19:32 > 6:19:34'He's no match for my new skills.

6:19:34 > 6:19:37'And then it's just me versus Lily.'

6:19:38 > 6:19:39Yeah!

6:19:39 > 6:19:42'Oh, yeah. Rio, here I come.' THEY LAUGH

6:19:43 > 6:19:46- The defenders let you down a little bit, I think.- Yeah, I know.

6:19:46 > 6:19:50So, um...any space on the plane to Rio for me, do you think?

6:19:50 > 6:19:53Not quite, I don't think. A bit more maybe. A bit more practice.

6:19:53 > 6:19:55Yeah, I knew you were going to say that. Do you know what?

6:19:55 > 6:19:59You've shown me today that with a lot of hard work, dedication and

6:19:59 > 6:20:01a lot of practice, you really can make your dreams come true,

6:20:01 > 6:20:03so thank you.

6:20:03 > 6:20:05- Definitely.- Well done. Good luck in Rio. I'll be there.

6:20:07 > 6:20:10Yeah, don't think I'll make it to Rio on the hockey team, do you?

6:20:10 > 6:20:12Make sure you head online if you want to see Lily

6:20:12 > 6:20:15and I doing a bit more hockey skills together.

6:20:15 > 6:20:17It's "How many keepie-uppies can we do?"

6:20:17 > 6:20:18See if you can beat my score.

6:20:18 > 6:20:20Just a clue - it's low.

6:20:20 > 6:20:23Now, how do those hockey balls do what they do?

6:20:23 > 6:20:25Well, here to answer that question is

6:20:25 > 6:20:26super scientist Greg Foot, everyone.

6:20:26 > 6:20:29CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

6:20:29 > 6:20:32- Greg, you're back to Blue Peter. - I am.- Welcome back.- Thank you.

6:20:32 > 6:20:35And you're going to be talking about the sports with science today,

6:20:35 > 6:20:36- the science behind sports.- Yeah.

6:20:36 > 6:20:38Because it's not always just down to talent

6:20:38 > 6:20:40and really hard training and brainpower.

6:20:40 > 6:20:42Sometimes it's actually down to equipment. Is that right?

6:20:42 > 6:20:46Absolutely. So, so many sports involve kicking or throwing

6:20:46 > 6:20:47- or hitting a ball through the air.- OK.

6:20:47 > 6:20:51The key to success is doing that as far or as fast

6:20:51 > 6:20:52or as accurate as possible.

6:20:52 > 6:20:55And that's not just down to the player's skill.

6:20:55 > 6:20:57It's also down to the design of the boot or the racket or

6:20:57 > 6:20:58the design of the ball.

6:20:58 > 6:21:01Ah, speaking of the ball, what are you going to show us today?

6:21:01 > 6:21:03It's the FA Cup final soon, and the Euros,

6:21:03 > 6:21:05- so let's have a look at the football first.- OK.

6:21:05 > 6:21:07Now, normally a ball moves through the air

6:21:07 > 6:21:10and you can't see the air around it, but watch this. Look at this.

6:21:10 > 6:21:13- This is amazing.- OK.- So, the ball flies through the air. Look at this.

6:21:13 > 6:21:16And what you can see here is all the air from the front of it

6:21:16 > 6:21:18rushing round to the back.

6:21:18 > 6:21:20- And you see all that messiness there?- Yes.

6:21:20 > 6:21:21We call that turbulence.

6:21:21 > 6:21:23We call it drag, because all the air has rushed around,

6:21:23 > 6:21:26it's bumping around and it's made a wake behind it.

6:21:26 > 6:21:29A wake is the word we use when a boat zooms through the water,

6:21:29 > 6:21:31- isn't it, and it leaves a wake behind it?- Exactly the same.

6:21:31 > 6:21:34And that's messy water behind. This gets messy air behind.

6:21:34 > 6:21:37And the key is if you can design a ball such that the wake

6:21:37 > 6:21:39is smaller, is thinner,

6:21:39 > 6:21:42- then the ball will travel further or faster or be more accurate.- OK.

6:21:42 > 6:21:45Does this mean there is a group of very clever people who basically

6:21:45 > 6:21:49design sports balls and sports equipment to work very effectively?

6:21:49 > 6:21:51- Absolutely. They're called sports engineers.- Cool job title.

6:21:51 > 6:21:54This is one of the bits of kit they might use. This is a wind tunnel.

6:21:54 > 6:21:55Wow. OK.

6:21:55 > 6:21:58What I want to do is show you how air moves over different-size

6:21:58 > 6:21:59and shape balls.

6:21:59 > 6:22:01So, let's have a look at this one first.

6:22:01 > 6:22:03We've got a glamorous assistant, I should say.

6:22:03 > 6:22:05Chalky's here just getting ready.

6:22:05 > 6:22:07So, there's the air moving over the smoke.

6:22:07 > 6:22:10- This is just a smooth ball for now. You see the orange string?- Yeah.

6:22:10 > 6:22:13It's going absolutely wild and that's because of

6:22:13 > 6:22:15- that turbulent air, that wake behind it.- Sure.

6:22:15 > 6:22:17So, that can show you exactly what's happening.

6:22:17 > 6:22:21Now, Lindsey, you'd think that the smoother a ball is,

6:22:21 > 6:22:23- the easier it is going to cut through the air.- Yes.- Yeah?

6:22:23 > 6:22:27- Yeah.- So, why then do we have golf balls

6:22:27 > 6:22:30that have dimples on them?

6:22:30 > 6:22:31I thought that would move slower.

6:22:31 > 6:22:32If I was going to guess,

6:22:32 > 6:22:35I'd say that would move slower through the air.

6:22:35 > 6:22:37Let's have a little look. Let's pop it in the wind tunnel.

6:22:37 > 6:22:39Let's have a look what's happened.

6:22:39 > 6:22:42The thing is, we found out that when balls got chips on them,

6:22:42 > 6:22:45like, little bits knocked out of them, they actually flew further.

6:22:45 > 6:22:47And look at the orange string now.

6:22:47 > 6:22:49It's going less wild, so it's slightly smoother.

6:22:49 > 6:22:50- Much smoother, isn't it?- Yeah.

6:22:50 > 6:22:53So, there's a smaller wake behind this golf ball.

6:22:53 > 6:22:56Look at this animation that we've made. Look at this. This is great.

6:22:56 > 6:22:58So, there's the golf ball. The air's flowing over the top of it.

6:22:58 > 6:23:02Thanks to those dimples, the air sticks closer to the ball

6:23:02 > 6:23:04for longer and you get a thinner wake like that.

6:23:04 > 6:23:05That's so clever.

6:23:05 > 6:23:08Now, the key is, thanks to those dimples, you get a thinner wake.

6:23:08 > 6:23:10A thinner wake means less drag. It slows down less.

6:23:10 > 6:23:14And, actually, a golf ball goes three times further than just

6:23:14 > 6:23:17- a purely smooth sphere. - I would never have guessed that.

6:23:17 > 6:23:18Isn't it amazing?

6:23:18 > 6:23:20Now, Wimbledon's just around the corner and I love it.

6:23:20 > 6:23:23They use kind of fluffy tennis balls, don't they?

6:23:23 > 6:23:26- Why are they all fuzzy? - Why are tennis balls fluffy?

6:23:26 > 6:23:27Right, have a look.

6:23:27 > 6:23:29Here's a very fluffy tennis ball. Let's put it in here.

6:23:29 > 6:23:32Now, the thing is, you don't want to make all balls travel faster.

6:23:32 > 6:23:34- Look at what's going to happen. - Look at this.

6:23:34 > 6:23:37Look at that string behind. It is going all over the place.

6:23:37 > 6:23:39Dancing in the air, isn't it?

6:23:39 > 6:23:42It's because there is such a huge wake behind a tennis ball,

6:23:42 > 6:23:45deliberately, because in tennis you want to slow the ball down,

6:23:45 > 6:23:49- otherwise the serve would just fly out the back of the court.- OK.

6:23:49 > 6:23:50So they're designed to be that way.

6:23:50 > 6:23:53The moral is, don't play golf with a tennis ball or the other

6:23:53 > 6:23:56- way round, cos it's all going to go very wrong, isn't it?- Exactly right.

6:23:56 > 6:23:58- Yeah. Exactly right.- OK.

6:23:58 > 6:24:01Greg, you fantastically explained the sports science behind balls.

6:24:01 > 6:24:02I've got another question for you.

6:24:02 > 6:24:05Can you explain the sports science behind our sporting elite

6:24:05 > 6:24:07- we have here?- OK, I'll try.

6:24:07 > 6:24:10So, loads of training obviously goes in to you guys achieving

6:24:10 > 6:24:11the heights that you have,

6:24:11 > 6:24:13but you can kind of say that there are three different

6:24:13 > 6:24:17types of body shapes in, kind of, Olympic sport and Paralympic sport.

6:24:17 > 6:24:20What you've got is you've got ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph.

6:24:20 > 6:24:23Steph, I'd say you're an ectomorph, OK? You're tall.

6:24:23 > 6:24:25You're quite slight. There's not much muscle, not much fat.

6:24:25 > 6:24:27You've got great stamina.

6:24:27 > 6:24:29Of course, you need to have that for your sport, right?

6:24:29 > 6:24:32Yeah, of course, because football lasts 90 minutes and for me

6:24:32 > 6:24:35it's all about performing to a high standard for 90 minutes, so to have

6:24:35 > 6:24:38a lot of stamina and produce all the movements is what I need to do.

6:24:38 > 6:24:41Yeah. So, Christian and Ellie, I'd say you are a mesomorph.

6:24:41 > 6:24:44So, this is you've got slightly more muscle, slightly more power

6:24:44 > 6:24:48and you use that in gymnastics and swimming, of course.

6:24:48 > 6:24:51- And the third one is an endomorph.- Yes.

6:24:51 > 6:24:55Yeah, so have a look at this. This is Ciaran. Here is Ciaran.

6:24:55 > 6:24:58- Big lad.- Much bigger lad, right? He has got bigger joints.

6:24:58 > 6:24:59He has got wider hips.

6:24:59 > 6:25:01And he uses the power and his strength

6:25:01 > 6:25:04and his body weight in sports like rugby, of course, for him.

6:25:04 > 6:25:08The thing is, those are just kind of three ideal, like, shapes.

6:25:08 > 6:25:11No-one really fits into each one exactly. You're kind of a mixture.

6:25:11 > 6:25:14So, everyone that's watching needs to just go and try loads of

6:25:14 > 6:25:17sports, do what you love, practice, practice, practice,

6:25:17 > 6:25:19but it's all about this. The brain.

6:25:19 > 6:25:20The drive and the passion.

6:25:20 > 6:25:23I love that. You're getting really passionate. An inspiring speech.

6:25:23 > 6:25:25Greg Foot, everyone. Thank you for coming in.

6:25:25 > 6:25:28And if you want to know what kind of body type you are

6:25:28 > 6:25:30and what sport would suit you, head to the Blue Peter website.

6:25:30 > 6:25:32The address is just there.

6:25:32 > 6:25:34And you can take a little quiz that will tell you.

6:25:34 > 6:25:37And whilst you're on the website, why don't you see Barney's clips?

6:25:37 > 6:25:39He was set the challenge to name as many sports

6:25:39 > 6:25:41as he could in alphabetical order.

6:25:41 > 6:25:42It's very funny. Check it out.

6:25:42 > 6:25:43W we can have, that's easy.

6:25:43 > 6:25:46W's obviously, erm, women's basketball.

6:25:46 > 6:25:48Women's football. W...

6:25:48 > 6:25:50U, V, W, X.

6:25:50 > 6:25:51Xylophone-playing.

6:25:51 > 6:25:53X, Y is yachting.

6:25:53 > 6:25:55And Z is...

6:25:55 > 6:25:56There's just no use here, is there?

6:25:56 > 6:25:59Z is... There's a sport with Z and the sport is...

6:26:00 > 6:26:01Erm, I don't...

6:26:02 > 6:26:04Let's just leave the Z, shall we?

6:26:05 > 6:26:08I will never get bored of seeing Barney get hit with stuff like that.
