6:02:00 > 6:02:03I first got into gardening when I was about four,
6:02:03 > 6:02:06because my dad influenced that and also my mum.
6:02:06 > 6:02:09I think it's good to be outside in the fresh air where you can
6:02:09 > 6:02:12enjoy something, which is also good for you.
6:02:12 > 6:02:14It is like growing a money tree - gardening.
6:02:14 > 6:02:16Because you can grow your own produce.
6:02:16 > 6:02:19Sometimes when you get something from the supermarket it is
6:02:19 > 6:02:22a waste of money when you can grow it at your house for free.
6:02:22 > 6:02:23He certainly knows his onions
6:02:23 > 6:02:27and he's got a plan to get our veg patch looking great again.
6:02:27 > 6:02:29What are we going to do?
6:02:29 > 6:02:32Well, I think we need to add a little bit of nutrients to the soil.
6:02:32 > 6:02:36- OK, sounds good. So what is the plan?- Horse manure.- So, poo?
6:02:36 > 6:02:40Yes. Why is it important that we get the poo into the garden?
6:02:40 > 6:02:43Well, it is like food for the plants.
6:02:43 > 6:02:46Because it is bare and it hasn't got nutrients in the soil,
6:02:46 > 6:02:48it's good to have a bit of food there.
6:02:48 > 6:02:49It needs some help, doesn't it?

6:03:07 > 6:03:10pretty busy for George, and he's now an RHS young ambassador.
6:03:10 > 6:03:14So what comes with that job? What responsibilities do you have now?
6:03:14 > 6:03:17I think the main responsibility is to try
6:03:17 > 6:03:20and inspire other young people to get into gardening.
6:03:20 > 6:03:23And what have you been doing since you won Young Gardener of the Year?
6:03:23 > 6:03:27I've been doing speeches at Parliament, I've been meeting
6:03:27 > 6:03:31- the Queen at Chelsea Flower Show. - Oh, right. Nothing big, then.- No.
6:03:31 > 6:03:33It's been easy.
6:03:33 > 6:03:37- What are we going to do next? Work the ground?- Yep! What does this do?
6:03:37 > 6:03:41- Just mix it all in, George?- Yeah, just get all the nutrients in there.

6:04:58 > 6:05:03I think they smell nice and they're also very good for cooking.
6:05:03 > 6:05:05That's true. If you've got herbs in the garden,
6:05:05 > 6:05:07you can just chuck them into anything, can't you?
6:05:07 > 6:05:09Yeah, my mum does it with chicken.
6:05:09 > 6:05:12The problem with growing all this tasty produce is there's
6:05:12 > 6:05:16plenty of garden pests who also love a nibble.
6:05:16 > 6:05:20But George has a secret to help keep them at bay.
6:05:20 > 6:05:21We've got our runner beans here.
6:05:21 > 6:05:25And why is it so important that we plant them near the marigolds?
6:05:25 > 6:05:27Well, the marigolds attract the insects that will eat
6:05:27 > 6:05:31the pests that will eat the runner beans.
6:05:31 > 6:05:33Oh, so to get all the pests away from our amazing runner beans
6:05:33 > 6:05:36- they all go over that way, basically, don't they?- Yes.
6:05:36 > 6:05:38- And that is called companion planting.- There we go.

6:09:06 > 6:09:10they are nesting very close to their arch predator, the sparrowhawk.
6:09:10 > 6:09:12We've got cameras on a sparrowhawk nest as well,
6:09:12 > 6:09:15so we're going to be very interested to see what happens around there.
6:09:15 > 6:09:18Another thing we're doing this year is Do Something Great For Nature.
6:09:18 > 6:09:21We're trying to encourage people to get out into their community
6:09:21 > 6:09:24and volunteer to improve things for the wildlife there,
6:09:24 > 6:09:25and everyone can get involved.
6:09:25 > 6:09:28I love that. Because you can do something great and earn
6:09:28 > 6:09:31- your green Blue Peter badge. - Well, exactly. I did exactly that.
6:09:31 > 6:09:34I got the long straw out of the three presenters and I went
6:09:34 > 6:09:36to the RSPCA centre in Stapely Grange
6:09:36 > 6:09:40and I got to help with loads of different British wildlife,
6:09:40 > 6:09:43and I got to release some animals back into the wild as well,
6:09:43 > 6:09:47so definitely something very, very rewarding to do as a volunteer.

6:17:05 > 6:17:10We all know and love it, but how do you make it better?
6:17:10 > 6:17:15We have made it even greener and I'm not talking about the colour.
6:17:15 > 6:17:21It will still be green, but it will be greener. As in... green.
6:17:24 > 6:17:27The first step is producing them in the UK.
6:17:27 > 6:17:29So I am in Cornwall to visit this
6:17:29 > 6:17:32solar-powered factory where the new badge will now be made.
6:17:32 > 6:17:37But it's not just where they are made that is important, it is
6:17:37 > 6:17:39what they are made out of.
6:17:39 > 6:17:42This is the first Blue Peter badge to be
6:17:42 > 6:17:45manufactured from recycled plastic left over from yoghurt pots.
6:17:45 > 6:17:46What?!
6:17:46 > 6:17:49Just wanted to make sure the plastic was clean.
6:17:51 > 6:17:53The process starts with a new mould,
6:17:53 > 6:17:56which was expertly created by design engineer, Simon.
6:17:56 > 6:18:01We start off with the 2-D shape. Give it a bit of depth.
6:18:01 > 6:18:05We then end up with a complete badge.
6:18:05 > 6:18:08Then we send some code to the milling machine which cuts away
6:18:08 > 6:18:10the surface of the metal,
6:18:10 > 6:18:13leaving lots of impressions of a Blue Peter badge.
6:18:13 > 6:18:17It takes 45 hours to cut out a mould,
6:18:17 > 6:18:20which can make 36 badges at a time.
6:18:23 > 6:18:27The device holds the mould ready for the recycled plastic.
6:18:27 > 6:18:30Many of the machines run off solar power.
6:18:30 > 6:18:35The plastic is then heated to 240 Celsius. Let's make some badges.
6:18:35 > 6:18:39It then presses the plastic into the mould
6:18:39 > 6:18:42and can make 3,500 badges an hour.
6:18:44 > 6:18:47So here we have our box filled with badges.
6:18:47 > 6:18:51All they need now is a bit of colour. I think they're "all white".
6:18:51 > 6:18:54It's like "all right" but it...
6:18:56 > 6:18:59To transform them into green badges, a printer similar to one you
6:18:59 > 6:19:04might have at home is used and 72 can be printed at any one time.
6:19:04 > 6:19:06Which means only one thing, my friends!
6:19:06 > 6:19:11# 72 green badges lying next to me
6:19:11 > 6:19:15# 72 green badges lying next to me
6:19:15 > 6:19:19# But if one Blue Peter viewer sends in a nature picture for me

6:21:30 > 6:21:31- Shall I get it?- Yeah.- Come here.
6:21:31 > 6:21:35Counting the number of different insects gives the rangers
6:21:35 > 6:21:39a really good idea of how healthy the habitat is.

6:21:41 > 6:21:43But as well as counting, we are
6:21:43 > 6:21:46also collecting them for a closer look later on.

6:23:24 > 6:23:27- What is this? It's huge! - It's a hairy bear caterpillar.

6:23:33 > 6:23:37- Yes, the spines can cause a skin rash.- OK.
6:23:37 > 6:23:39I've seen a caterpillar with black spots,
