6:08:54 > 6:08:56- That's me, cockers! - Mate, it's so good to see you.
6:08:56 > 6:08:58I thought I smelled beef paste.
6:08:58 > 6:09:01- Hiya, Barney Harwood. Are you well, me old cocker?- I'm all right, son.
6:09:01 > 6:09:04It's always good to see you on the show. Thank you for being here.
6:09:04 > 6:09:06- Lovely, that.- You could also get a shout-out from Radzi.- Who's he?
6:09:06 > 6:09:08Well, WHERE is he, more to the point.
6:09:08 > 6:09:11- I don't know.- Where's he gone?
6:09:11 > 6:09:14Barney, I am here, actually, to see something that I haven't
6:09:14 > 6:09:18tried since school, but never like this.
6:09:18 > 6:09:19Pull!
6:09:19 > 6:09:24I give to you the England Under-18 Army Cadet Tug-of-war Squad
6:09:24 > 6:09:27and, in case you don't know what that is, to help explain more,
6:09:27 > 6:09:30we have judge Ray Fray-Smith. Ray, lovely to meet you, sir.
6:09:30 > 6:09:33- Pleased to meet you, sir.- This looks like a real competition here,
6:09:33 > 6:09:36- but how do you compete in tug-of-war?- It's a simple sport.
6:09:36 > 6:09:38We have a rope and we have two equal teams,
6:09:38 > 6:09:40seven pullers and an anchorman, and they pull
6:09:40 > 6:09:43a distance of four metres and the winning team wins. Simple as that.
6:09:43 > 6:09:46You can see a lot of hard work goes into this, a lot of strength.
6:09:46 > 6:09:47How important is strength?
6:09:47 > 6:09:52Strength is important, endurance and stamina and a big heart.
6:09:52 > 6:09:54- A big...?- It certainly helps.
6:09:54 > 6:09:56And those are the kind of words I guess you'd associate
6:09:56 > 6:09:58- with the Olympic Games.- Yes. - Is at an Olympic sport?
6:09:58 > 6:10:00Unfortunately, since the 1920s,
6:10:00 > 6:10:02tug-of-war doesn't feature in the Olympics,
6:10:02 > 6:10:05but I'm very pleased to say that Great Britain are the
6:10:05 > 6:10:09reigning Olympic Champions and the City of London Police
6:10:09 > 6:10:12represented England and we have the gold medal from the 1920s.
6:10:12 > 6:10:14- That's the actual one? - It is indeed, yeah.
6:10:14 > 6:10:18That's the actual Olympic gold medal we won essentially a century ago?
6:10:18 > 6:10:21- Yes.- What a privilege that is. Well, Ray, you've inspired me.
6:10:21 > 6:10:24- Can I give it a go?- Certainly. I've got Damien, the team captain.
6:10:24 > 6:10:26- Damien, lovely to meet you, my friend.- How are you?
6:10:26 > 6:10:27So, how do I do this?
6:10:27 > 6:10:29Basically, tug-of-war, there's a couple of steps.
6:10:29 > 6:10:32- You have to pick up the rope, take the strain steady and pull.- OK.
6:10:32 > 6:10:33All right, so at the moment,
6:10:33 > 6:10:36we're going to start you with picking up the rope.
6:10:36 > 6:10:38- I can do that bit.- OK, everyone!
6:10:38 > 6:10:42- Yes.- So if you put both hands by the blue tape.- Yes, like that.
6:10:42 > 6:10:46Yep, that's perfect. And you want to get your hands by your waist.
6:10:46 > 6:10:49- Take the strain... - OK, that's it. OK?- OK.
6:10:49 > 6:10:51And now we're going to... Basically,
6:10:51 > 6:10:55we're going to show you how to get steady for the actual pulling.
6:10:55 > 6:10:59- Steady...- So now you're going to make sure that...
6:10:59 > 6:11:01- You're going to get a bit lower. - Yeah.- That's it.
6:11:01 > 6:11:04And then you're going to, basically, when you push off, you're going
6:11:04 > 6:11:07to push with all the force on the front of your toes.
6:11:07 > 6:11:08- Gotcha. OK.- Pull!
6:11:08 > 6:11:10Whoa!
6:11:10 > 6:11:14There's a lot of force in this. OK. OK... We might be, er...
6:11:14 > 6:11:16We might be losing this one, but that's fine,
6:11:16 > 6:11:21that's absolutely fine, cos it's taking part that counts. OK.
6:11:21 > 6:11:24- Is this good, Damien?- Yeah. Basically, what you want to do is,
6:11:24 > 6:11:27- you want to slide back with your feet?- Slide back? Yes!
6:11:27 > 6:11:31I mean, I wanted to do that, this is helping. Definitely helping!
6:11:31 > 6:11:34- Helping... - WHISTLE BLOWS
6:11:34 > 6:11:38That's, er... Just, er... Probably going to leave that there, actually.
6:11:38 > 6:11:40I'm glad I got that practice in cos I'm going to need it later on.
6:11:40 > 6:11:44We're going to do it again, this time with a few famous faces.
6:11:44 > 6:11:46And embarrassing myself with this rope has reminded me of
6:11:46 > 6:11:49a challenge I did earlier on in the year.
6:11:49 > 6:11:51HE PANTS
6:11:51 > 6:11:57The year is 1922 and American Ralph Stevenson has a dream.
6:11:57 > 6:12:02He wants to recreate the thrill of mountain skiing, but on water.
6:12:02 > 6:12:07He takes a couple of wooden boards and a clothesline out onto a lake.
6:12:07 > 6:12:12And, towed by his brother, he tries lots of different techniques until
6:12:12 > 6:12:18he leans back and lifts the toes of the wooden boards out of the water.
6:12:18 > 6:12:20And waterskiing as we know it today is born.
6:12:24 > 6:12:28And thank goodness good old Ralph Stevenson had that dream, because
6:12:28 > 6:12:31if not, I wouldn't be about to take on my next Blue Peter challenge.
6:12:31 > 6:12:34And I wouldn't be getting in that cold reservoir,
6:12:34 > 6:12:36being...dragged by a speedboat...
6:12:36 > 6:12:39with pieces of wood under my feet...
6:12:39 > 6:12:41Ah, thank goodness(!)
6:12:44 > 6:12:46And the man who's going to show me the ropes, or rope,
6:12:46 > 6:12:49is waterskiing coach Nick.
6:12:49 > 6:12:51Nick, I know I'm going to be waterskiing,
6:12:51 > 6:12:53but what will I actually be doing today?
6:12:53 > 6:12:55You're going to be having great fun.
6:12:55 > 6:12:57Like riding your bike downhill really fast.
6:12:57 > 6:12:59- That's what it's going to be like? - You'll have a thrill,
6:12:59 > 6:13:01- a great time.- How is it going to look like today?
6:13:01 > 6:13:03What will I start with and how will it go through?
6:13:03 > 6:13:05We're going to start you on what we call a training boom,
6:13:05 > 6:13:08which is basically a big stick attached to the side of the boat,
6:13:08 > 6:13:11then we're going to progress you onto the rope.
6:13:11 > 6:13:15The rope's more fun, but it takes a lot more balance.
6:13:15 > 6:13:17'So, first things first,
6:13:17 > 6:13:20'Nick just wants me to stand up holding the boom pole.
6:13:20 > 6:13:21'That sounds simple enough.'
6:13:21 > 6:13:23Bit further, so you're between the two cables.
6:13:23 > 6:13:26In case you're wondering, it's freezing.
6:13:27 > 6:13:30Whoa!
6:13:30 > 6:13:32'Yes, the water is ice cold,
6:13:32 > 6:13:33'the wind is blowing in my face
6:13:33 > 6:13:36'and I can't see a thing, but I'm stood up!'
6:13:39 > 6:13:40Yes!
6:13:40 > 6:13:42Yes! I think I'm doing it!
6:13:44 > 6:13:46This is good fun!
6:13:46 > 6:13:48He's doing really good. I think we've got a natural.
6:13:48 > 6:13:50I'm standing up!
6:13:50 > 6:13:54'For a first attempt, I think I did OK...
6:13:54 > 6:13:56'but then I see 11-year-old Lucy.'
6:14:01 > 6:14:05Lucy Roberts is the British Under-12 Champion and she also happens
6:14:05 > 6:14:09to be the proud owner of a Blue Peter sport badge.
6:14:09 > 6:14:10So who better to help me out?
6:14:12 > 6:14:15Lucy, I really enjoyed working on the boom pole.
6:14:16 > 6:14:18Is there anything else I can do?
6:14:18 > 6:14:20Yeah, I think if you want a bit of a challenge,
6:14:20 > 6:14:23we can try and get you up behind the back of the boat if you want to.
6:14:23 > 6:14:26- On the actual rope?! - On the actual rope!
6:14:26 > 6:14:29- On the ACTUAL rope?! - It's not a pretend rope.
6:14:29 > 6:14:32HE LAUGHS
6:14:32 > 6:14:34'Using the rope is much harder because there's
6:14:34 > 6:14:38'no pole to support myself, so all my weight is on the water.'
6:14:44 > 6:14:48Argh! I'm trying hard to stay still!
6:14:48 > 6:14:52Whoa! Whoa! I can't stand up! Whoa!
6:14:52 > 6:14:56'I'm literally putting everything I've got into trying to stand up.
6:14:56 > 6:14:57'It's so hard!'
6:14:59 > 6:15:01Yes!
6:15:01 > 6:15:02Oh-ho!
6:15:03 > 6:15:06I don't know what this looks like on camera...
6:15:06 > 6:15:09but from where I'm looking, it's very intense.
6:15:11 > 6:15:15'This is tough. Time for some more advice from Lucy.'
6:15:15 > 6:15:19- Should I do anything differently? - Well, you took a bit of a long time!
6:15:19 > 6:15:20LAUGHTER
6:15:20 > 6:15:23Just try and do it. Just do it quick.
6:15:23 > 6:15:28'Brutal! But with more training under the watchful eye of Lucy...'
6:15:28 > 6:15:29Stand up!
6:15:29 > 6:15:31Whoo!
6:15:31 > 6:15:33'..I manage to speed things up.'
6:15:33 > 6:15:35I think that was really good.
6:15:35 > 6:15:37'As I reach the end of my first session,
6:15:37 > 6:15:41'I feel I'm really making progress. But then...'
6:15:41 > 6:15:42Whoa!
6:15:46 > 6:15:51I have absolutely loved it today, which is a good job,
6:15:51 > 6:15:55because I'm going to have to get used to these water-skis.
6:15:55 > 6:15:57My challenge is to perform
6:15:57 > 6:16:00at the British Junior Water-ski Championships.
6:16:00 > 6:16:03I need to put together a routine of tricks that I'll perform in
6:16:03 > 6:16:08front of a panel of judges and some of the best young talent in
6:16:08 > 6:16:12the country, and I've only got a few months in which to do it,
6:16:12 > 6:16:16so my training moves quickly, and I get very used to hitting the water.
6:16:21 > 6:16:25Even though it's a real challenge, I'm loving being pushed.
6:16:28 > 6:16:30But things start to get complicated.
6:16:33 > 6:16:34So, so difficult.
6:16:34 > 6:16:38Balance and concentration and I haven't had much luck so far.
6:16:39 > 6:16:42Balance and concentration are exactly what I need if
6:16:42 > 6:16:44I'm going to pull off the tricks in my routine.
6:16:46 > 6:16:47Like spinning -
6:16:47 > 6:16:51turning on the water will be part of all my trick manoeuvres,
6:16:51 > 6:16:55so I need to get it right, but with just weeks left,
6:16:55 > 6:16:57I've got a problem...
6:17:00 > 6:17:04- Going this side, clockwise, that's my weakness.- Yeah.
6:17:04 > 6:17:07That's the one, when if I am going to fall over or catch an edge
6:17:07 > 6:17:10or get it wrong, it's going to be on that side.
6:17:10 > 6:17:12- What can I do about that?- Practise.
6:17:14 > 6:17:18I've come a long way, but if I'm going to pull this challenge off,
6:17:18 > 6:17:20I've still got some way to go.
6:17:24 > 6:17:26Nick and Lucy are legends, by the way.
6:17:26 > 6:17:28- That is an incredible sport. - I would like to point out

6:22:35 > 6:22:40I don't quite see the point of this game. But they like it.

6:22:43 > 6:22:46Oh, look, the whites are winning. The white team winning.

6:23:38 > 6:23:40your Young Sports Personality of the Year.
6:23:40 > 6:23:43It can be a friend, a family member, or even just your sporting idol.
6:23:43 > 6:23:46You don't have to choose Radzi Chinyanganya but the option's there.
6:23:46 > 6:23:49- Now, Hacker, name your favourite animal.- Ocelot.- No, not ocelot.
6:23:49 > 6:23:52- A furry one.- A sheep. - Yes, well done, he got it in two.
6:23:52 > 6:23:55That's not worth a prize, but this film might be.
6:23:59 > 6:24:01Meet the Loaghtan,
6:24:01 > 6:24:04a breed of sheep known for having four distinctive horns.
6:24:04 > 6:24:07They are pretty rare and native to the Isle of Man,
6:24:07 > 6:24:10so that is exactly where I have come.
6:24:10 > 6:24:13They are so beloved by the residents here, they have actually put
6:24:13 > 6:24:16the image of the Loaghtan on the back of their pennies.
6:24:16 > 6:24:20At one time, there were less than 50 of these sheep left, but now, thanks
6:24:20 > 6:24:24to the work of people like Nigel here, there are well over 1,000.
6:24:24 > 6:24:27Come on, girls.
6:24:27 > 6:24:30Nigel, tell me about the Loaghtan. They're gorgeous, aren't they?
6:24:30 > 6:24:33Yeah, absolutely fantastic. They are just so beautifully adapted,
6:24:33 > 6:24:35they can look after themselves,
6:24:35 > 6:24:38they'll eat anything, literally anything. They're a hardy sheep.
6:24:38 > 6:24:41But even the hardiest of sheep need a haircut.
6:24:41 > 6:24:44And these Loaghtans are due a serious snip.
6:24:44 > 6:24:47I'm going to lend a hand but before we can commence the cutting,
6:24:47 > 6:24:49we need to build a pen.
6:24:50 > 6:24:53We'll put a gate across here which will hold them in here.
6:24:53 > 6:24:55We'll have gates on four sides, and once they're in a small area,
6:24:55 > 6:24:57they're easier caught.
6:24:57 > 6:25:01Pen built, time to round them up. Cue the comedy music.
6:25:01 > 6:25:05COMEDY MUSIC
6:25:07 > 6:25:10- Right.- Right, talk me through what I need to do.
6:25:10 > 6:25:14- Walk round behind them and talk to them nicely.- Come on, guys.
6:25:14 > 6:25:17You're going to get a lovely haircut. I was thinking a perm.
6:25:17 > 6:25:21Right, we've got those guys in. This is good, this is good, this is good.
6:25:21 > 6:25:24'Great dancing, Nigel. Yep, don't miss that one.'
6:25:25 > 6:25:28That was actually pretty well done, wasn't it?
6:25:29 > 6:25:33Once penned, it's time to trim, with sheep shearer Jess.
6:25:33 > 6:25:35Now, obviously, when you go to the hairdressers,
6:25:35 > 6:25:38you sit in a nice, comfy chair, you know you're there to have your
6:25:38 > 6:25:41hair cut, and you get a shampoo and everything, you can read a magazine.
6:25:41 > 6:25:43Sheep aren't like humans, in that sense.
6:25:43 > 6:25:45They don't just sit and pay attention.
6:25:45 > 6:25:46- No, they don't know what is going on.- OK.
6:25:46 > 6:25:48We try and do it as quickly as possible,
6:25:48 > 6:25:50keep them moving so they don't get bored.
6:25:50 > 6:25:53- Sure.- And it is over in no time.
6:25:54 > 6:25:55But before I can get stuck in,
6:25:55 > 6:25:58Jess has to show me the correct shearing technique.
6:25:58 > 6:26:02So the sheep can't run away, they're sat on their bottom.
6:26:02 > 6:26:06You start with the belly. That would tickle. Then the back.
6:26:06 > 6:26:08And finally the neck.
6:26:08 > 6:26:11- And that's all there is to it. - As easy as that?- Yes.
6:26:11 > 6:26:16All right, then, here we go. Let's, erm... Let's do it.
6:26:18 > 6:26:21It's all right, just a trim. Hello.
6:26:21 > 6:26:24If you want to just make that straight to this leg here.
6:26:24 > 6:26:27So, from there, just a swipe down to there, that's it.
6:26:27 > 6:26:29'Now, with my carefully manicured beard,
6:26:29 > 6:26:32'you'd think this would be a breeze. But trying to trim
6:26:32 > 6:26:35'a Loaghtan that's not a big fan of the hairdresser is not easy.'
6:26:35 > 6:26:37That's it, keep going.
6:26:37 > 6:26:40'It's just those tricky, hard-to-reach areas left.'
6:26:40 > 6:26:44There you go. Just go down towards the tail now.
6:26:44 > 6:26:47- That's it.- That's it. - Perfect.- Beautiful.
6:26:47 > 6:26:50'Ta-da! Looking sharp, my friend.'
6:26:50 > 6:26:52- She looks like a happy customer. - Definitely.
6:26:52 > 6:26:55- What do you reckon for a first time? - Very good, yes.
6:26:55 > 6:26:58It's all down to the teacher. Jess, thanks very much.
6:26:58 > 6:27:01Now, I've got to find out what happens when you've got all
6:27:01 > 6:27:03this stuff off the sheep. What you do with it?
6:27:04 > 6:27:08Susan and her grandson Tristan are local experts in taking
6:27:08 > 6:27:10Loaghtan wool and turning it into clothing,
6:27:10 > 6:27:13and if there is one thing I love, it's knitwear.
6:27:19 > 6:27:21Ah, good times.
6:27:21 > 6:27:24Freshly sheared wool is spun on a wheel to turn it into
6:27:24 > 6:27:26a long string called a yarn.
6:27:26 > 6:27:30This yarn can then be turned into a lovely woolly jumper.
6:27:30 > 6:27:33- Oh, have I broke it? I think I'll leave this to the experts.- Right.
6:27:33 > 6:27:36Whilst it's a bit advanced for me, it's fascinating to see
6:27:36 > 6:27:39what can be done with the Loaghtan's prize wool.
6:27:39 > 6:27:42I really enjoyed today. That's been really productive.
6:27:42 > 6:27:44We've sheared a sheep in the morning, we've taken the wool
6:27:44 > 6:27:46and seen how we can make it into different things,
6:27:46 > 6:27:49I think we've all learned a really nice break.
6:27:49 > 6:27:51- So, a cup of tea. - Oh, Barney, I'm so sorry.
6:27:51 > 6:27:54We've got another 500 sheep that need shearing over there.
6:27:54 > 6:27:56No slacking yet. Things to do.
6:27:56 > 6:27:58Nigel, you're such a mean boss.
6:27:58 > 6:28:02- Why don't sheep shrink in the rain? - Go on.- Well, I just don't know.
6:28:02 > 6:28:04My woolly jumper did one wash, and I couldn't wear it again.
6:28:04 > 6:28:07But, anyway, I am wearing a relatively open weave and enjoying myself.
6:28:07 > 6:28:10You have been sending your comments in so we can give you shout-outs.
6:28:10 > 6:28:12So, here we go. As quick as we can, boys, ready?
6:28:12 > 6:28:15- Star stone vanilla goose. - Tanzanite air canary.
6:28:17 > 6:28:19- Beige green and kitten.- Beautiful.
6:28:19 > 6:28:22Blue violet mini baker.
6:28:22 > 6:28:25- Blue green sprinkles plum. - That's a good name.
