7:17:13 > 7:17:17so instead you've got a video about sprouts - cheer up!
7:17:18 > 7:17:20Mate, I love Christmas, it is my favourite time of year.
7:17:20 > 7:17:22Christmas dinners, though, even better.
7:17:22 > 7:17:25Roast potatoes, crispy roast potatoes, cranberry, turkey...
7:17:25 > 7:17:28You missed one out, the best ingredient on the plate
7:17:28 > 7:17:30at Christmas... Sprouts.
7:17:31 > 7:17:33Huh?
7:17:33 > 7:17:37# It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas... #
7:17:37 > 7:17:39Brussels sprouts - we've been eating them
7:17:39 > 7:17:41for more than 400 years
7:17:41 > 7:17:45and they are an essential part of Christmas dinner.
7:17:45 > 7:17:49To find out how they end up on our tables at this time of year,
7:17:49 > 7:17:53we've come to Berwickshire, to the biggest sprout farm in Europe!
7:17:53 > 7:17:56I haven't seen this many sprouts in real life ever.
7:17:56 > 7:17:59- It's a huge area, isn't it? - It is, it's a very big area.
7:17:59 > 7:18:02So, how many parts of Scotland have you covered in sprout?
7:18:02 > 7:18:05- We've covered 900 acres in Scotland this year in sprouts.- Wow!
7:18:05 > 7:18:08And how many sprouts are we talking about here?
7:18:08 > 7:18:1012.5 million plants and that's going
7:18:10 > 7:18:12to generate about 700 million sprouts.
7:18:12 > 7:18:15Wow-ow-how-how!
7:18:15 > 7:18:17This place is huge!
7:18:17 > 7:18:20And we're going to find out how they produce millions
7:18:20 > 7:18:22of sprouts all in time for Christmas.
7:18:23 > 7:18:26Tell you what, why don't you stay here? Cos this field
7:18:26 > 7:18:28is off the charts and I'll go in the nice warm factory.
7:18:28 > 7:18:31Yeah, great idea, I'll stay out here in the cold.
7:18:31 > 7:18:35There's a theme happening here. Excuse me a sec. Radz...?
7:18:35 > 7:18:38At one time, all these sprouts would have been picked by hand.
7:18:38 > 7:18:42Now, though, machines share the load.
7:18:42 > 7:18:44This looks like a serious piece of kit.
7:18:44 > 7:18:47- So what is it we're actually doing? - We're going along the rows...
7:18:47 > 7:18:49- We're cutting the sprout at the bottom...- Yeah.
7:18:49 > 7:18:51And the lads are picking them up and putting them through
7:18:51 > 7:18:54the stripping head. What that does is it strips
7:18:54 > 7:18:57the sprouts from the stalk, so then we can take them to the factory.
7:18:57 > 7:18:59All right, boys, my go.
7:18:59 > 7:19:04In just a matter of seconds, this harvester takes the sprout plant,
7:19:04 > 7:19:08chops it up and separates the little green balls we know and love.
7:19:08 > 7:19:11These guys actually make it look very easy,
7:19:11 > 7:19:13but it's actually quite hard to do.
7:19:13 > 7:19:16It's amazing how technology can make things...
7:19:16 > 7:19:18so much easier.
7:19:18 > 7:19:21So, while I'm doing this down here, let's see how
7:19:21 > 7:19:22Radzi is getting on in the factory.
7:19:27 > 7:19:30Once picked, the sprouts head to a factory,
7:19:30 > 7:19:33where they are tested to make sure they are good enough
7:19:33 > 7:19:35to be sent all around the country.
7:19:36 > 7:19:40So, we're going to get them put through our grading line,
7:19:40 > 7:19:42to check out the size of the sprouts.
7:19:42 > 7:19:45And we've got an amazing machine that's going to check out whether
7:19:45 > 7:19:47they've got any little marks on them, any blemishes.
7:19:47 > 7:19:50And the machine will kick those out right away.
7:19:50 > 7:19:53After that, they come down the line and we're going to check what size
7:19:53 > 7:19:56the sprouts are. We've got these rollers which are checking out
7:19:56 > 7:20:00how big the sprouts are. And then that splits them up
7:20:00 > 7:20:03into different sizes of sprouts, OK? We then get them
7:20:03 > 7:20:05coming down onto the production lines, where we've got
7:20:05 > 7:20:08a few extra people just to do the final check and then
7:20:08 > 7:20:11it's ready to go into a pack, basically.
7:20:12 > 7:20:14Only the most perfect sprouts will do
7:20:14 > 7:20:16for the most important dinner of the year.
7:20:16 > 7:20:18So I think I need to keep my eye
7:20:18 > 7:20:21on some of these. You're welcome, Great Britain.
7:20:22 > 7:20:24What do we think about this? Is that OK?
7:20:24 > 7:20:27This one here... I think there might have been a little pest
7:20:27 > 7:20:30that might have had a little nibble at this one.
7:20:30 > 7:20:34So we're going to get rid of that, as well. Good one, yeah.
7:20:34 > 7:20:36There are just so many sprouts.
7:20:36 > 7:20:39All I can see is green, all I can see is Brussels sprouts.
7:20:39 > 7:20:42And all I can think about is Christmas.
7:20:42 > 7:20:45Think about this a little like Strictly Come Dancing,
7:20:45 > 7:20:49only the very best make it all the way to Christmas.
7:20:49 > 7:20:53So here we have the final product in a pack, ready to eat,
7:20:53 > 7:20:55- there you go. - Thank you very much indeed.
7:20:55 > 7:20:59So that is how Brussels sprouts go from the field to your dinner table.
7:21:00 > 7:21:02What a lovely informative day!
7:21:04 > 7:21:06But it doesn't end there.
7:21:07 > 7:21:11Because we're not leaving without a Christmas Challenge.
7:21:11 > 7:21:14Barney and I will be going head-to-head to see
7:21:14 > 7:21:17who can pick the most sprouts in just 30 seconds.
7:21:17 > 7:21:20No machines, it will all be done by hand.
7:21:21 > 7:21:24- The prize is a crown.- Yes!- Wow, look at that, it's a sprout crown.
7:21:24 > 7:21:27- Barney, do you want one?- I... I'm not too sure.
7:21:27 > 7:21:31- Let's get started. In three, two, one...- Go!- Go!
7:21:34 > 7:21:36There we go.
7:21:37 > 7:21:40This one's quite hard.
7:21:40 > 7:21:44- Radz, how long have we got?- I think we've got about five seconds left.
7:21:44 > 7:21:47- I hope you haven't eaten any sprouts.- No, I haven't eaten any.
7:21:47 > 7:21:49Time's up.
7:21:49 > 7:21:51- Barney?- What?- That was so difficult.
7:21:51 > 7:21:53I feel like I was doing that for ages, what's the time?
7:21:53 > 7:21:57- The time?- Yeah.- Erm... It is about a quarter past four...
7:22:01 > 7:22:03But there can only be one sprout king!
7:22:05 > 7:22:09- Radzi, you're the champion. - Thank you very much, sir. Oh, yes!
7:22:09 > 7:22:12Only one thing for it. Slow-mo celebration.
7:22:12 > 7:22:16So when you sit down to tuck into your Brussels sprouts
7:22:16 > 7:22:20on Christmas Day, spare a thought for the amazing effort
7:22:20 > 7:22:23that goes into getting them from field to fork.
7:22:25 > 7:22:27Did you spot Shelley in amongst those Brussels sprouts?
7:22:27 > 7:22:31Well, congratulations to Pink Sparkly Bunny, who was the very
7:22:31 > 7:22:34first person to follow the clues online and find out where Shelley
7:22:34 > 7:22:37has disappeared to. Now, Christmas on Blue Peter isn't all about
7:22:37 > 7:22:39a massive Christmas tree or an amazingly decorated studio,
7:22:39 > 7:22:43it's also about a 50-year-old Nativity scene
7:22:43 > 7:22:46which you can see right here. Because Christmas is
7:22:46 > 7:22:49all about celebrating the birth of Jesus, who Christians,
7:22:49 > 7:22:52like myself, believe to be the Son of God.
7:22:52 > 7:22:55And in our Nativity scene here, we can see Jesus' parents
7:22:55 > 7:22:59Mary and Joseph. We can also see the animals who live in the stable.
7:22:59 > 7:23:04We've got the shepherds who followed the star of Bethlehem to Jesus.
7:23:04 > 7:23:06We have the Three Wise Men who carried their gifts
7:23:06 > 7:23:11of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And the most important of them all -
7:23:11 > 7:23:14baby Jesus, who goes right there.
7:23:14 > 7:23:16And I hope Jesus is very comfortable.
7:23:16 > 7:23:18In fact, I hope all of you, no matter what you're doing
7:23:18 > 7:23:22to celebrate this festive season, you have a happy and healthy one.
