0:05:38 > 0:05:41CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:05:42 > 0:05:45- Guys, that was so good! - Now, this is Blue Peter.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48You all have your Blue Peter badges on. You all look very happy.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50There's one thing to do. Happy dance!

0:05:50 > 0:05:53A festive one. Ho-ho-ho-ho-ho. That was amazing.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55It is, of course, based on the film "Nativity!",

0:05:55 > 0:05:57which lots of people have seen.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00And by the way, it's coming to CBBC this Christmas, if you haven't.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02Those who haven't seen it, what's it all about, guys?

0:06:02 > 0:06:07OK, so I'm Mr Maddens, and I've been asked to direct the nativity at

0:06:07 > 0:06:09St Bernadette's this year, despite the fact that I hate Christmas.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12Now, I may have told some little white lies, saying that Hollywood

0:06:12 > 0:06:14are coming to see the show, but little did I know

0:06:14 > 0:06:17that Mr Poppy here was going to tell the entire town!

0:06:17 > 0:06:20But it's all right, though, because now we're all going to be

0:06:20 > 0:06:23- rich, famous millionaires. We're all moving to Hollywood.- No, no...

0:06:23 > 0:06:25These guys are taking method acting very seriously.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27Archie, let's have a chat to you, my friend.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29So, I presume you guys have been acting in stage school for years

0:06:29 > 0:06:32and years and years. Is that right?

0:06:32 > 0:06:36Well, we all started off with a recording that we had to send

0:06:36 > 0:06:39to the producers, and then it narrowed it down to an audition,

0:06:39 > 0:06:41and then it came to another audition,

0:06:41 > 0:06:44and then one final audition, and then 27 children were cast.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47So none of you have performed before and now you're here performing

0:06:47 > 0:06:50- on stage and on Blue Peter. High five!- That's amazing!

0:06:50 > 0:06:54And, Evie, you're touring the UK. How has that been?

0:06:54 > 0:06:56It's really, really exciting because, like,

0:06:56 > 0:06:59we go to all the different hotels and make so much new friends.

0:06:59 > 0:07:04All right, stop. She yaps on a bit. This is...

0:07:04 > 0:07:06We're going around the country - it's all brilliant, isn't it?

0:07:06 > 0:07:10High-five! And next, we go to London next week and, also,

0:07:10 > 0:07:13we get to meet Louis Walsh. He's going to be in the show, so...

0:07:13 > 0:07:17- THE Louis Walsh?- The Louis Walsh. - AS LOUIS:- It's a yes from me!

0:07:17 > 0:07:19- I love the Welsh! - Guys, thank you so much.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21You two are sticking around for our Christmas quiz later.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24But to the rest of the cast of "Nativity!", please give them

0:07:24 > 0:07:27a massive round of applause! CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:07:27 > 0:07:30Now, guys, a question to all of you.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33Who here has already turned on their Christmas lights at home?

0:07:34 > 0:07:36OK, you're going to like this because on Blue Peter, we've gone

0:07:36 > 0:07:40one better, because we've switched on something seriously impressive.

0:07:42 > 0:07:47The BT Tower. Built from 13,000 tonnes of concrete.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50It's one of the most iconic shapes on the London skyline.

0:07:50 > 0:07:56At a massive 189 metres, it was once the capital's tallest tower.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59First opened in 1965,

0:07:59 > 0:08:02the tower is still a major television broadcasting hub.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04In fact, check this out.

0:08:04 > 0:08:0995% of UK television passes through the airwaves from here.

0:08:09 > 0:08:14Including me, right now, on your television,

0:08:14 > 0:08:17even though I'm here when I'm...

0:08:17 > 0:08:19This is complicated.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24Yep, the info is coming thick and fast, people.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26And here's some more for you.

0:08:26 > 0:08:33In 2009, the tower had a 360-degree screen installed at the top.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35To find out more, I'm heading up there.

0:08:35 > 0:08:40And I'm doing so in one of the fastest lifts in the country.

0:08:40 > 0:08:41Which is great news.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45With it being such a long journey all the way to the top,

0:08:45 > 0:08:49I thought I'd share with you some of my favourite lift facts.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53There was one time Lindsey, Barney and me got into a lift...

0:08:53 > 0:08:54- LIFT:- Door opening.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57That's annoying.

0:08:57 > 0:09:00The man who looks after the tower screens is Wayne.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04- Wayne, lovely to meet you. - Nice to meet you, Radzi.

0:09:04 > 0:09:07What do you think it is that makes the BT Tower so special?

0:09:07 > 0:09:10It's very much in use, it's an operational building.

0:09:10 > 0:09:13It's a hub for the UK telecommunications.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16I've noticed the screen at the very top. What is that for?

0:09:16 > 0:09:19We actually know it as the info band.

0:09:19 > 0:09:23It's used to celebrate UK landmark events.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25And why would it need changing or replacing?

0:09:25 > 0:09:27The original one was up there for seven years

0:09:27 > 0:09:29and as you can imagine, being up at that height,

0:09:29 > 0:09:31it gets battered by the wind, rain, snow,

0:09:31 > 0:09:33so it was time for it to be replaced.

0:09:33 > 0:09:35- How can I help?- You're going to come along with us now

0:09:35 > 0:09:38and install one of the new info band panels.

0:09:38 > 0:09:40So we're kitting you up, full harness,

0:09:40 > 0:09:43getting you over the side with the riggers to install one.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46Over the side of this incredibly tall building?

0:09:46 > 0:09:48Very much so.

0:09:48 > 0:09:52We begin by heading back down to somewhere called the plant room.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55Brilliant, I get to use that lift again.

0:09:55 > 0:09:57Wayne, I do love plant rooms.

0:09:57 > 0:10:00In fact, my top 10 plant rooms of all time...

0:10:00 > 0:10:02- Sorry, Radzi, we're actually here now.- Are we?- Yeah.

0:10:02 > 0:10:04- LIFT:- Doors opening.

0:10:04 > 0:10:05Ah, that's really annoying.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11The info band is actually made up of lots of small screens

0:10:11 > 0:10:14that work together to create a giant image.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16These all need installing separately.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18And it's here that they're prepared.

0:10:18 > 0:10:22- Wayne, I'm seeing a lot of panels. - There are a lot of panels.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25396 in total and all the associated bits of steelwork

0:10:25 > 0:10:27and everything that needs to go onto the back of these panels

0:10:27 > 0:10:29to get them ready to go upstairs and be rigged.

0:10:29 > 0:10:31What can I do to help?

0:10:31 > 0:10:34What I can get you to do is install this bulb into this panel which

0:10:34 > 0:10:37will complete this panel so we can take it upstairs and get it rigged.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39- OK, fine.- Happy with that? Have you seen these before?

0:10:39 > 0:10:43- I've seen them before, of course. - Excellent, there we go.- What?

0:10:44 > 0:10:46OK, no, that's not going to help.

0:10:46 > 0:10:50Underneath. If you hold that underneath, that on top,

0:10:50 > 0:10:53hold it back there and just crank it up.

0:10:53 > 0:10:55- OK.- There we go.

0:10:55 > 0:10:59Each one of these bolts is holding the screen together above the city.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01So I'm making sure I get this right.

0:11:01 > 0:11:03You might want to go a little bit quicker

0:11:03 > 0:11:05cos there's thousands and thousands more to go.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07- Thousands?- Thousands.

0:11:08 > 0:11:09OK.

0:11:11 > 0:11:12- Perfect.- Now we're in.

0:11:12 > 0:11:14OK, this one is complete now.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16So we can take this one upstairs and get it rigged.

0:11:16 > 0:11:20- Fantastic, leave it to me, Wayne, it's all mine.- OK. Off you go.

0:11:21 > 0:11:22I'm going to get some help.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25Once a panel is put together,

0:11:25 > 0:11:28it's time to fix it to the side of the building.

0:11:28 > 0:11:30And you know this is where it gets serious

0:11:30 > 0:11:33because I've got to put a hard hat on my Afro.

0:11:35 > 0:11:39OK, Radzi, we're on level T37, level 37 of the tower now.

0:11:39 > 0:11:42I'm afraid this is the part where I hand you over to the riggers.

0:11:44 > 0:11:45Who'll take care of you

0:11:45 > 0:11:47and let you install the panel we've just raised up.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50- OK, that's it down there? - That's the one.

0:11:50 > 0:11:52- That's the one they pulled up now. - Wait till you see this.

0:11:52 > 0:11:57I am nearly 119 metres above the ground.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00When I climb over the edge, I need to clip my harness

0:12:00 > 0:12:02to the barrier to make sure I'm safe.

0:12:04 > 0:12:05That in there.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08I'm about to help out on a building project

0:12:08 > 0:12:11above one of the busiest cities in the world.

0:12:11 > 0:12:13There's no pretty way to do this.

0:12:14 > 0:12:18I've got the best seat in the house, all thanks to BT.

0:12:18 > 0:12:22Wow! Where my feet are, I can see the road.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25And those people look about the size of very small ants.

0:12:25 > 0:12:29But I'm not here to admire the view. I've got a job to do.

0:12:29 > 0:12:31Let's get this panel into place.

0:12:31 > 0:12:35- OK, that's perfect. Got both your attachments on there.- I'm safe?

0:12:35 > 0:12:36- You're perfectly safe now.- Good.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39We're going to winch it up now into position.

0:12:39 > 0:12:40We're going to winch it up? OK.

0:12:41 > 0:12:46396 of these panels all the way around the tower.

0:12:48 > 0:12:52First up, I need to secure the bolts that hold the screen.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56I'm not nearly as fast as these boys.

0:12:57 > 0:12:58But I want to make sure,

0:12:58 > 0:13:02if I'm putting a bolt into the tower, that it ain't going anywhere.

0:13:02 > 0:13:06I then attach an extra safety cable, just to be sure.

0:13:11 > 0:13:14This screen will be seen by millions for years to come.

0:13:14 > 0:13:18So it's probably best if I leave the experts to finish the job.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21- Wayne, thank you so much. - It's been a pleasure.

0:13:21 > 0:13:23And I guess all that's left to do is take the lift down.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26Wayne, did I mention I've got some great facts about concrete...

0:13:26 > 0:13:29D'you know what, Radzi? I'm going to grab the next one, if that's OK.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31Wayne, Wayne...

0:13:33 > 0:13:36But I want to see the results of the team's handiwork.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38And I know just the place.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41It's a few weeks later and we are back in London.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44The only thing is, I can't see the tower from here.

0:13:44 > 0:13:46We need a better view.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49I'm heading to the rooftop of the BBC's West One building

0:13:49 > 0:13:51for a very special view.

0:13:53 > 0:13:59Now, we just need to find out if all 396 of the panels are working,

0:13:59 > 0:14:02including the one that I helped to put in place.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07Yeah!

0:14:25 > 0:14:28- So...- We're OK for tower facts. - I want the tower facts.

0:14:28 > 0:14:31- No, put your hand down. - Nobody wants the tower facts.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34- If he wants them...- Stop it. Go on, tell us some tower facts.

0:14:34 > 0:14:40OK, so in 1947, I once knew a bloke who went into a tower,

0:24:29 > 0:24:32To start off with, it was just getting the shortlist,

0:24:32 > 0:24:36but then once we started narrowing it down, it was pretty...harsh.

0:24:36 > 0:24:38And when you looked at the depth of talent,

0:24:38 > 0:24:40did it make you think there's just so many people out there

0:24:40 > 0:24:41who are so good at what they do?

0:24:41 > 0:24:44You don't realise how many people there are,

0:24:44 > 0:24:46until they're at such a high level,

0:24:46 > 0:24:48but, yeah, there's so many people out there.

0:24:48 > 0:24:51So it's time to reveal to you at home the top three finalists

0:24:51 > 0:24:55of Young Sports Personality Of The Year 2017.

0:25:01 > 0:25:04World Para Alpine Skiing champion Millie Knight.

0:25:04 > 0:25:07And European champion gymnast, Ellie Downie.

0:25:07 > 0:25:10I love the excitement and adrenaline you get in competition,

0:25:10 > 0:25:13and the fact that training's never the same all the time,

0:25:13 > 0:25:14it's always different.

0:25:14 > 0:25:17I love skiing, it is the most fantastic thing.

0:25:17 > 0:25:19You know, being visually impaired, life is somewhat restricting,

0:25:19 > 0:25:21but the moment I click my boots in,

0:25:21 > 0:25:23I get that amazing sense of freedom.

0:25:23 > 0:25:26Football sensation Phil Foden

0:25:26 > 0:25:28was voted player of the tournament

0:25:28 > 0:25:30at this year's Under 17 World Cup.

0:25:31 > 0:25:34And his form for England has led to him recently

0:25:34 > 0:25:37play for the Man City first team.

0:25:38 > 0:25:42Ellie Downey took home an incredible four medals

0:25:42 > 0:25:45at this year's European gymnastics championships,

0:25:45 > 0:25:47before injury cut short her season.

0:25:48 > 0:25:50Being nominated for Young Sports Personality was...

0:25:50 > 0:25:51I was actually quite surprised,

0:25:51 > 0:25:54because I've been nominated before and won it.

0:25:54 > 0:25:56I didn't think you'd be, like, be able to go in again,

0:25:56 > 0:25:58and have a chance to win it again,

0:25:58 > 0:26:00but obviously...really excited!

0:26:00 > 0:26:03Millie Knight won Great Britain's only gold medal

0:26:03 > 0:26:08at the World Para Alpine Ski Championships in 2017.

0:26:08 > 0:26:09And if that wasn't enough,

0:26:09 > 0:26:13she followed it up with three silvers.

0:26:13 > 0:26:15To be nominated myself is amazing,

0:26:15 > 0:26:18because I never thought I was ever going to be good enough

0:26:18 > 0:26:21to be sort of considered for this so I'm...

0:26:21 > 0:26:23Yeah, it's a wonderful achievement.

0:26:24 > 0:26:27Winning it for a second time would be just pretty crazy.

0:26:27 > 0:26:29I remember the first time I was quite young,

0:26:29 > 0:26:32so going up on stage in front of all those people

0:26:32 > 0:26:33was quite nerve-racking.

0:26:33 > 0:26:34But I think if I won it this time,

0:26:34 > 0:26:37I'd know what to say a little bit more.

0:26:38 > 0:26:39It'd be amazing to win,

0:26:39 > 0:26:43but, you know, just to be nominated and to make the shortlist is...

0:26:43 > 0:26:45..is a massive achievement for me.

0:26:45 > 0:26:47So those are the nominees.
