0:03:25 > 0:03:27CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:03:27 > 0:03:29Let's do it, and let's find out who's won

0:03:29 > 0:03:32the Blue Peter Book Award 2018. The best book with facts.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34Let's have a look at the nominees.

0:03:34 > 0:03:38First up, we've got Corpse Talk, Ground-Breaking Scientists,

0:03:38 > 0:03:40by Adam and Lisa Murphy.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43Next, it's Real-life Mysteries by Susan Martineau,

0:03:43 > 0:03:46illustrated by Vicky Barker.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49And Beyond The Sky: You And The Universe

0:03:49 > 0:03:50by Dara O Briain,

0:03:50 > 0:03:52illustrated by Dan Bramall.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55Well, let's see what the judges thought.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58Today I am talking about Corpse Talk.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01I liked this book because it was a comic

0:04:01 > 0:04:04and it made people come back to life.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08My favourite factual book is Real-Life Mysteries,

0:04:08 > 0:04:12because it has many facts about the ocean and space,

0:04:12 > 0:04:15and many other interesting things.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17Beyond The Sky is an amazing book.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20Funny, because it's full of funny jokes,

0:04:20 > 0:04:23and facts about space.

0:04:23 > 0:04:27Well, over 500 children were judges in 12 schools up and down the UK -

0:04:27 > 0:04:31but there can only be one winner. Who is it?

0:04:31 > 0:04:34And the winner of the best book with facts is...

0:04:34 > 0:04:36DRUMROLL

0:04:36 > 0:04:39..Real-Life Mysteries!

0:04:39 > 0:04:40CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:04:40 > 0:04:43Aw, here they are, Susan Martineau and Vicky Barker!

0:04:44 > 0:04:45Yeah!

0:04:46 > 0:04:49- Guys, welcome to BP! Radzi's doing a happy dance!- Oh, thank you!

0:04:49 > 0:04:53- Here are your beautiful awards! - Thank you.- Yes!

0:04:53 > 0:04:55Susan, how are you feeling?

0:04:55 > 0:04:56Oh, I'm so thrilled.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59Especially as it was Blue Peter viewers who voted for us.

0:04:59 > 0:05:03So, thanks to them, and finally I've got my very own Blue Peter badge.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06- Yeah!- It's pretty special, isn't it? - Yes.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09And Vicky, you're pretty special, because your illustrations

0:05:09 > 0:05:12in this book are off the charts, as Radzi would say -

0:05:12 > 0:05:14and there's a lot of them. Did you have a favourite?

0:05:14 > 0:05:16So many cool spreads to choose from,

0:05:16 > 0:05:19but I think anything to do with the weird and wonderful creatures,

0:05:19 > 0:05:22the deep sea monsters and Bigfoot, I think they were my favourite.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25Well, amazing. Can we hear it for them one more time?

0:05:25 > 0:05:27Well done, both of you!

0:05:27 > 0:05:28CHEERING

0:05:28 > 0:05:30Radzi is very happy.

0:05:30 > 0:05:34Now, that got us thinking - how strong, physically, are books?

0:05:34 > 0:05:37Well, we put books and science to the test, on an epic scale.

0:05:37 > 0:05:38Have a look.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44We're in a top-secret facility

0:05:44 > 0:05:48because I'm taking on a very special challenge.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51We're putting the laws of physics to the test.

0:05:51 > 0:05:55We're going to be taking on one of its most famous forces,

0:05:55 > 0:05:57to push science to the limit.

0:05:57 > 0:06:01This is...

0:06:01 > 0:06:04In 2017, the BBC launched Terrific Scientific,

0:06:04 > 0:06:07which is all about getting us excited by science.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10We wanted to get involved in the biggest way possible,

0:06:10 > 0:06:13so I've called upon science expert Greg Foot

0:06:13 > 0:06:16to help us test the powers of friction.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19Greg, I'm so glad you're here to help out.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22Firstly, please tell me - what exactly is friction?

0:06:22 > 0:06:24Right, so whenever you take two objects,

0:06:24 > 0:06:26and they touch or they rub together,

0:06:26 > 0:06:28- you get a force of friction between them.- OK.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31- Try this, rub your hands together. - Yeah.- What do you feel?

0:06:31 > 0:06:33- They're getting hot? - Yeah, exactly,

0:06:33 > 0:06:36so you're having to put in energy to overcome that friction,

0:06:36 > 0:06:40and some of that energy is getting transferred into heat,

0:06:40 > 0:06:41which you can feel.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44OK, so how do we actually test friction?

0:06:44 > 0:06:46I thought you'd never ask.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49- What exactly is this? - I've wanted to do this for ages.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52This is the recreation of a very famous experiment

0:06:52 > 0:06:56that takes two books, and then it interleaves the pages together.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58You take the bottom page from this book, then you put the bottom page

0:06:58 > 0:07:01- from this book on top of it.- Oh! - Then a page from this,

0:07:01 > 0:07:03and a page from this. Wrapping the pages on top of each other,

0:07:03 > 0:07:06interleaving them, and you're left with that...

0:07:06 > 0:07:07..and they lock together, like...

0:07:07 > 0:07:11- I can't imagine how many hours that takes.- Oh, so long!

0:07:11 > 0:07:15For this test, we're using two chunky books, and the rubber band

0:07:15 > 0:07:18is there purely to keep the book covers from flopping about.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21It's going to take a massive force to pull it apart.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24Yeah, but the question is, how massive?

0:07:24 > 0:07:27Well, we need something quite a lot stronger than us, that's for sure.

0:07:27 > 0:07:31How about two vans, which will drive in opposite directions

0:07:31 > 0:07:33to try and pull the books apart?

0:07:33 > 0:07:35And what I've done is, I've put in this thing.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37This is called a load cell.

0:07:37 > 0:07:39What this is going to do is tell us the maximum amount of force

0:07:39 > 0:07:41that these vans are pulling

0:07:41 > 0:07:44on either side of this bad boy book rig.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47What's going to happen? Is it going to rip? Is it going to survive?

0:07:47 > 0:07:51- There's only one way to find out. - Three, two, one.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53Pull!

0:07:56 > 0:07:58Look at that!

0:07:58 > 0:08:00Try harder!

0:08:00 > 0:08:02That's unbelievable.

0:08:02 > 0:08:03She is smoking!

0:08:03 > 0:08:06- Woo!- Let's see what happened! - Let's go in, are we good?

0:08:06 > 0:08:09- Is it safe yet? - We're going in, guys!

0:08:09 > 0:08:13- OK. I can't believe this didn't break.- 1,167 kilograms.

0:08:13 > 0:08:15So, what does that mean?

0:08:15 > 0:08:20That is like hanging 18 adults off this book rig -

0:08:20 > 0:08:24- but you know what? I think we can take this bigger.- What do you mean?

0:08:24 > 0:08:26To be honest, you really do not want to know.

0:08:31 > 0:08:33Greg has a super-sized experiment

0:08:33 > 0:08:36that will really test these books.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39And it's all going to take place at the home of Blue Peter,

0:08:39 > 0:08:41at Media City in Salford.

0:08:41 > 0:08:45So, Greg, we've built our own mini Media City here.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48- Yeah.- Why?

0:08:48 > 0:08:51My plan is, I want to dangle you

0:08:51 > 0:08:55underneath those interweaved books,

0:08:55 > 0:08:58attach the other end to a zip wire,

0:08:58 > 0:09:01OK? So, this is you here...

0:09:01 > 0:09:06..and then send you 235 metres down a zip wire,

0:09:06 > 0:09:08all the way down into the piazza.

0:09:08 > 0:09:13Dangling using nothing but friction.

0:09:13 > 0:09:15- Is this a joke? Are you joking?- No!

0:09:16 > 0:09:18I actually can't get my head around that.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21This is a proper, proper Blue Peter challenge.

0:09:21 > 0:09:25It doesn't get more extreme than this.

0:09:25 > 0:09:28This challenge is so big we need another presenter -

0:09:28 > 0:09:30someone with nerves of steel...

0:09:30 > 0:09:33..and a matching suit. We need Radzi.

0:09:36 > 0:09:41As we get into position, 35 metres up, it all becomes sickeningly real.

0:09:41 > 0:09:43I didn't think it was that high -

0:09:43 > 0:09:46and now that we're up here, looking down to where I need to go...

0:09:46 > 0:09:48- Oh, my tummy just went.- That's a long way!- My tummy just went.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51I feel a bit sick. I'm not going to look for a sec...

0:09:51 > 0:09:53- I'm going to look this way. - Do you want a push?

0:09:53 > 0:09:55No, I don't.

0:09:55 > 0:09:57Come on, it's not bad as you reckon now, you know that.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06- You ready to go?- No.- You look ready to me.- Oh... No, no, no, no.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09I feel really scared. Do I...? What do you do?

0:10:09 > 0:10:12Keep my arm here a minute. So, you come and shuffle to my arm.

0:10:12 > 0:10:14Why are we trusting a book to get me to the other...?!

0:10:14 > 0:10:16Oh, I just looked over again.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18Here we go, here we go, here we go.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20- 5... - ALL:- 4...

0:10:20 > 0:10:22- 3... - ALL:- 2...

0:10:22 > 0:10:241, go!

0:10:24 > 0:10:25SHE SCREAMS

0:10:28 > 0:10:30Just the friction between those pages!

0:10:32 > 0:10:34I'm going so fast!

0:10:35 > 0:10:37SHE SCREAMS

0:10:37 > 0:10:39I cannot believe that worked!

0:10:39 > 0:10:42- How was it, Linds?- I'm crying!

0:10:42 > 0:10:44Get me off, get me off!

0:10:44 > 0:10:48- It worked!- Mate, that was amazing. You know what?

0:10:48 > 0:10:50The speed really picked up. About halfway through,

0:10:50 > 0:10:52that went from being fine to,

0:10:52 > 0:10:55"Actually, how am I going to stop?"

0:10:56 > 0:11:00The whole way, I was like, "Come on, science! Come on, friction!"

0:11:00 > 0:11:04Science did it! Question is, is science going to hold Radzi?

0:11:04 > 0:11:07I wasn't nervous at all watching Lindsey,

0:11:07 > 0:11:10but now I know I'm using the same books that she used,

0:11:10 > 0:11:13and the weather's getting worse, and it's raining.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16Well, think what normally happens when paper gets wet.

0:11:16 > 0:11:20- It gets all soggy and mushy. - Yeah, and it tears easily.- Yeah.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23I don't think it's going to be able to take as much load on it.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26Oh, don't say that, Greg. Come on. Come on, Radz. I think he's near.

0:11:26 > 0:11:30I'm going to do it! Wish me luck.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33So, will two soggy books hold Radzi's weight

0:11:33 > 0:11:35for 235 metres

0:11:35 > 0:11:38at speeds of over 25 miles per hour?

0:11:38 > 0:11:40Cue the countdown.

0:11:40 > 0:11:41- 5... - ALL:- 4...

0:11:41 > 0:11:43- 3... - 2...

0:11:43 > 0:11:451!

0:11:45 > 0:11:46HE YELLS

0:11:48 > 0:11:52We are flying! Whoo!

0:11:53 > 0:11:55HE WHOOPS

0:11:56 > 0:11:58HE SHOUTS

0:12:02 > 0:12:04LINDSEY CHEERS

0:12:04 > 0:12:06- GREG:- Hi, mate!

0:12:06 > 0:12:10- RADZI:- Hey! Greg, you're right, it works!- Science works!

0:12:10 > 0:12:12Thank you, books!

0:12:12 > 0:12:14Unbelievable!

0:12:14 > 0:12:17Even with the rain, even with you doing it first, it works!

0:12:17 > 0:12:21Still, I told you, there is so much friction between all those pages.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24- Yes!- That is my kind of science!

0:12:24 > 0:12:27- Greg, thank you so much for keeping us safe.- You're very welcome.

0:12:27 > 0:12:28Thank you to all the team.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31I guess that's what I call Terrific Scientific.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:12:37 > 0:12:39- Yeah! Lindsey?- Radz?

0:12:39 > 0:12:41- Why did the nostril cross the road? - I don't know.

0:12:41 > 0:12:43Who NOSE?

0:12:43 > 0:12:44CHEERING

0:12:44 > 0:12:47OK, I had to take it off, it was tickling my shnoz. Right, come on.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50Linds, let's find out who won the Blue Peter Book Award 2018,

0:12:50 > 0:12:53- The Best Story. - All right, the nominees are...

0:23:53 > 0:23:56She sees a man, the prince, and it's love at first sight.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58So she dives down to the bottom of the sea, to the sea witch,

0:23:58 > 0:24:01and asks the sea witch to transform her tail into legs

0:24:01 > 0:24:03so she can be with the prince, but it all goes a little bit wrong.

0:24:03 > 0:24:06Oh, dear. Well, you guys look fantastic, by the way.

0:24:13 > 0:24:16she sacrifices her tail and gets her human legs.

0:24:16 > 0:24:17Well, I cannot wait see that.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27Just before that, time to let you know all about Spot Shelley.

0:24:31 > 0:24:34- She loved your beard, didn't she? - I know, more than I did.

0:24:34 > 0:24:37- It was very, very itchy. - Yes, it was itchy!

0:24:56 > 0:24:58We're getting cheesy.

0:24:58 > 0:25:00That's right, I put cheese in a cave a year ago,

0:25:00 > 0:25:02and we're going to be digging it up and tasting it.
