0:04:41 > 0:04:45I've got goose bumps, that was fab. You need to get ready for pancaking.
0:04:45 > 0:04:48- Pancakes.- You need to work on the batter, Mollie.
0:04:48 > 0:04:52While she does, 2018 is a huge year for commemorating
0:04:52 > 0:04:54the rights of women, and I went to London
0:04:54 > 0:04:56to find out a little bit more.
0:04:59 > 0:05:01This is the Palace of Westminster in London.
0:05:01 > 0:05:04Otherwise known as the Houses of Parliament.
0:05:05 > 0:05:07It plays a big part in all our lives,
0:05:07 > 0:05:11because it's here that the UK's laws are discussed and put in place.
0:05:16 > 0:05:19It's a building that has been home to some huge moments in history,
0:05:19 > 0:05:21and has survived two world wars.
0:05:23 > 0:05:26This is Central Lobby, right in the centre of the palace,
0:05:26 > 0:05:29and it's slap bang in the middle of the House of Commons
0:05:29 > 0:05:33just over there, where the government and opposition MPs
0:05:33 > 0:05:35discuss the laws they want to pass,
0:05:35 > 0:05:37and the House of Lords just over there,
0:05:37 > 0:05:40where those laws are looked at again with a fine-tooth comb.
0:05:41 > 0:05:45We've got access to the House of Commons chamber.
0:05:45 > 0:05:47Oh, my goodness!
0:05:50 > 0:05:53It is quite unbelievable to be actually in here.
0:05:54 > 0:05:56Wow!
0:05:58 > 0:06:01It's from this very spot every week that the Prime Minister stands
0:06:01 > 0:06:05and has to answer questions on how they're running the country.
0:06:05 > 0:06:07And trust me, things can get pretty intense.
0:06:08 > 0:06:11- Order! Order! - JEERING
0:06:11 > 0:06:13Order!
0:06:15 > 0:06:19This is a cover-up, Mr Speaker. Pure and simple, and it stinks.
0:06:19 > 0:06:22And I thought being a BP presenter was tough.
0:06:23 > 0:06:27Everyone who is 18 or older gets to vote for who sits here
0:06:27 > 0:06:29and makes the country's laws.
0:06:30 > 0:06:32Today, voting is a basic right for every adult,
0:06:32 > 0:06:35but it hasn't always been that way.
0:06:35 > 0:06:38In fact, as recently as 100 years ago,
0:06:38 > 0:06:41many people couldn't vote at all.
0:06:41 > 0:06:43And men and women weren't seen as equal.
0:06:45 > 0:06:47Marie works in the Houses of Parliament,
0:06:47 > 0:06:49and I've come to meet her to find out more.
0:06:50 > 0:06:54Marie, where are we? This place is absolutely incredible.
0:06:54 > 0:06:56We are in the Parliamentary Archives in the original Act Room,
0:06:56 > 0:07:01surrounded by 60,000 Acts of Parliament going back 500 years.
0:07:01 > 0:07:05All of these laws affect women's lives, but women had no say
0:07:05 > 0:07:07whatsoever in the making of them, because they couldn't vote.
0:07:09 > 0:07:10More than 100 years ago,
0:07:10 > 0:07:13many men and all women weren't allowed to vote.
0:07:13 > 0:07:17Believing this was wrong, a group of women began to protest.
0:07:18 > 0:07:22Yes, our women taxpayers are entitled to vote!
0:07:22 > 0:07:24They were called the Suffragettes,
0:07:24 > 0:07:27and over time, their protests grew louder and louder.
0:07:29 > 0:07:33In 1913, a Suffragette called Emily Wilding Davison died
0:07:33 > 0:07:35after being hit by the King's horse.
0:07:37 > 0:07:41But still, nothing changed, until the First World War broke out.
0:07:45 > 0:07:48With the men away fighting, many women found themselves
0:07:48 > 0:07:52in the workplace, doing jobs previously only done by men.
0:07:52 > 0:07:55And things were no different right here in the Palace of Westminster.
0:07:55 > 0:07:58So, I've come back to experience one of those roles.
0:08:00 > 0:08:03OK, so during the First World War, the House of Commons employed
0:08:03 > 0:08:06four girl porters to deliver mail and other items between offices.
0:08:06 > 0:08:08The youngest was only 14 years old.
0:08:08 > 0:08:11- Today, you're going to get to be a girl porter.- Is this my job?
0:08:11 > 0:08:14- It is, yes.- OK, the pressure's on. Better get to it.
0:08:19 > 0:08:21- Hello?- Hello. Thank you very much.
0:08:21 > 0:08:23The war changed Britain.
0:08:23 > 0:08:27After four years of doing these jobs, women were seen as more equal.
0:08:31 > 0:08:34In 1918, the government passed a law which gave the women
0:08:34 > 0:08:38older than 30 and all men over 21 the right to vote.
0:08:38 > 0:08:41It was a small change, but it was a start.
0:08:41 > 0:08:4610 years later in 1928, women were given the same rights as men.
0:08:49 > 0:08:52And someone who knows all about how important that was
0:08:52 > 0:08:54is Baroness Jenkin of Kennington,
0:08:54 > 0:08:56who's a member of the House of Lords.
0:08:58 > 0:09:00- Hello, Lindsey, lovely to see you. - Great to meet you.
0:09:00 > 0:09:03Let's talk about this act, because it was so very important
0:09:03 > 0:09:06at the time but it's still very important to everyone now, isn't it?
0:09:06 > 0:09:10Yes, it seems extraordinary that only 100 years ago, women,
0:09:10 > 0:09:12you and I, wouldn't have had the vote.
0:09:12 > 0:09:15And indeed, of course, a lot of men wouldn't have had the vote.
0:09:15 > 0:09:18It was the coming back from the war which was the catalyst
0:09:18 > 0:09:20which made everything change.
0:09:20 > 0:09:22So, 1918 was the start.
0:09:22 > 0:09:26But of course, there was still so much to do.
0:09:26 > 0:09:30And we all have to get involved, and girls today have to step up as well.
0:09:30 > 0:09:32Everybody can play a part
0:09:32 > 0:09:35and we shouldn't take our hard-fought freedoms for granted.
0:09:36 > 0:09:39Fast-forward to recent times and women not only
0:09:39 > 0:09:42vote for our government, they're part of our government,
0:09:42 > 0:09:45making decisions on how our country is run.
0:09:46 > 0:09:48I've also got quite a special piece of post to deliver
0:09:48 > 0:09:51for Harriet Harman, who is the longest-serving female MP.
0:09:53 > 0:09:56- Hi, there.- Hi, Harriet, how are you? I'm Lindsey.- Hi, thanks.
0:09:56 > 0:09:59It's great to meet you, I've got your mail for this morning.
0:09:59 > 0:10:00See what we've got here today.
0:10:00 > 0:10:02- You've got quite a lot today, actually.- Great, thank you.
0:10:02 > 0:10:04It's special to meet you
0:10:04 > 0:10:07because you are the longest serving female MP, which is incredible.
0:10:07 > 0:10:09So, how does that feel? What does that mean to you?
0:10:09 > 0:10:11Well, there's been such a change.
0:10:11 > 0:10:14I've been a Member of Parliament for 35 years,
0:10:14 > 0:10:16and when I first arrived, it was nearly all men.
0:10:16 > 0:10:20There was hardly any women at all, and it was really a time
0:10:20 > 0:10:22when people thought men should do the speaking
0:10:22 > 0:10:24and women should do the listening,
0:10:24 > 0:10:27and men should make all the decisions.
0:10:27 > 0:10:30And over these last years, that has completely changed
0:10:30 > 0:10:33and women want to be on equal terms with men,
0:10:33 > 0:10:35in the House of Commons, as well as everywhere else.
0:10:37 > 0:10:40It's amazing to think that just 100 years ago,
0:10:40 > 0:10:44young women just like me would have been denied the basic right to vote.
0:10:44 > 0:10:47They literally had no way of having their say.
0:10:47 > 0:10:49But the vote changed all of that, and you know what?
0:10:49 > 0:10:52Making this Blue Peter film has reminded me just how important it is
0:10:52 > 0:10:56for everyone to use their voice and have their say.
0:10:57 > 0:11:00It really is so important. If you want to know more, test yourself.
0:11:00 > 0:11:04You can do our Vote 100 quiz, that is on the BP website,
0:11:04 > 0:11:07so make sure you check it out. Now, time for a bit of fun,
0:11:07 > 0:11:10cos next Tuesday is Shrove Tuesday,
0:11:10 > 0:11:11which means one thing.
0:11:11 > 0:11:13- ALL:- Pancake Day!
0:11:13 > 0:11:15Yes, film crew, thank you.
0:11:15 > 0:11:18So, we're doing a bit of a pancake-off in true BP style.
0:11:18 > 0:11:20It's going to be Mollie versus Calum.
0:11:20 > 0:11:23- I love how focused you are, by the way.- I'm so focused.- Quite funny.
0:11:23 > 0:11:27Now, we let you each choose your own batter, your own ingredients.
0:11:27 > 0:11:30Mollie, let's come to you first because you've gone sweet vibes?
0:11:30 > 0:11:33Yes, I've got very much a sweet tooth,
0:11:33 > 0:11:36so I've gone in for the bananas, strawberries, blueberries.
0:11:36 > 0:11:39- Oh, classic.- I've actually added berries into my mix here.
0:11:39 > 0:11:42- Not to get fancy or anything, Calum.- I know!
0:11:42 > 0:11:45- But I've gone for thick American-style pancakes as well.- OK.
0:11:45 > 0:11:49- So, wish me luck with those.- I like your style and I love blueberries.
0:11:49 > 0:11:50- So, good luck.- There you go.
0:11:50 > 0:11:53You get on with that, because you're nearly ready to flip, I think.
0:11:53 > 0:11:55- I know.- Cal, let's come to you.- Yes?
0:11:55 > 0:11:58- You're joined firstly by two amazing sous-chefs.- My two chefs.
0:11:58 > 0:12:00- We should say hello to you guys.- Hi!- Hello.
0:12:00 > 0:12:04- Did you think a Purple badge form would get you here, by the way?- No.
0:12:04 > 0:12:07No! Now, you're making pancakes with Calum Scott, it's a big deal!
0:12:07 > 0:12:11Calum, speaking of which, what are you going to be making?
0:12:11 > 0:12:12Because there's some rogue ingredients.
0:12:12 > 0:12:14Yeah, I'm going for weird pancakes.
0:12:14 > 0:12:19I've got myself some cheese, spinach, beans.
0:12:19 > 0:12:21I've got some onions, I know you're a big fan of pickled onions.
0:12:21 > 0:12:24- I love pickled onions, actually. - Some tomatoes and some puree.
0:12:24 > 0:12:26Calum, I've got a lot of time for you
0:12:26 > 0:12:29but I think you've gone a bit weird with the baked beans, but we'll see!
0:12:29 > 0:12:32- You never know.- Exactly. - You help him out, OK, guys? Good.
0:12:32 > 0:12:35- Oh! Mollie's already flipped. - Right, I flipped.
0:12:35 > 0:12:38I've just got to get them out of the silverware. Oh, here we go!
0:12:38 > 0:12:40Lovely! Beautifully done, she's ready to stack.
0:12:40 > 0:12:43You need to be plating. Shall we count Calum down for a flip?
0:12:43 > 0:12:45- Ready?- Yes!
0:12:45 > 0:12:47- ALL:- Three, two, one!
0:12:47 > 0:12:48Whoa!
0:12:49 > 0:12:54- Yes!- That was flipping brilliant. Well done, Calum.
0:12:54 > 0:12:56You need to plate up ASAP, my friend.
0:12:56 > 0:12:59By the way, if you're doing these at home, get a parent to help
0:12:59 > 0:13:02or an adult to help with hot pans, because they can be dangerous.
0:13:02 > 0:13:05You haven't got long, get those toppings on, girls.
0:13:05 > 0:13:07- That on the base.- They're kind of making a pizza pancake?
0:13:07 > 0:13:10- Yeah.- Yeah.- They said they wanted Calum Scott pancakes.
0:13:10 > 0:13:12We'll see how that goes.
0:13:12 > 0:13:14- What are you going to do? - Scott's face.- Scott's face?
0:13:14 > 0:13:16- Calum Scott's face on a pancake. - Yes.
0:13:16 > 0:13:20- OK, this really has gone rogue. - Some green stuff on there.
0:13:20 > 0:13:22- Where's the head?- Mollie? - Come on, Mollie.
0:13:22 > 0:13:24- This is going way better than rehearsals.- It really is!
0:13:24 > 0:13:27- That's saying a lot. - Mollie's was raw and disgusting.
0:13:27 > 0:13:30- How are you going to get that out? - I actually can't.- Shake it!
0:13:30 > 0:13:33- Smash it on the floor.- Right, really give it some welly here.
0:13:33 > 0:13:36- Come on, Mollie!- Give it some welly!
0:13:36 > 0:13:38- Yes, it's out!- Yes! - CHEERING
0:13:38 > 0:13:40You're doing well. This is going exactly as planned.
0:13:40 > 0:13:43Your stack looks phenomenal. Right, they haven't got long.
0:13:43 > 0:13:45Shall we count them down?
0:13:45 > 0:13:48Ten, nine, eight, seven...
0:13:48 > 0:13:53- Quick!- ..six, five, four, three, two, one.
0:13:53 > 0:13:54KLAXON BLARES
0:13:54 > 0:13:56Time is up, there's nothing more you can do.
0:13:56 > 0:13:59- I like that, hands up. - I think we've done it.
0:13:59 > 0:14:03That looks incredible, I'm going to come to Mollie's first and taste it.
0:14:03 > 0:14:06Because I am the official adjudicator. How hard is my job?
0:14:06 > 0:14:08Mollie, these look great.
0:14:08 > 0:14:11- This is a lot better than rehearsals.- They're not raw!
0:14:11 > 0:14:13So, well done. I'm going to get a strawberry.
0:14:14 > 0:14:19- I'm not going to lie, Mollie, that's good.- Did I nail it? High-five.
0:14:19 > 0:14:21- You know it!- Yes!
0:14:21 > 0:14:23OK, wow! This is beautiful.
0:14:23 > 0:14:27Pickled onions for eyes, I like this. Beans for a mouth.
0:14:27 > 0:14:30I can't believe I'm going to eat this, but I am.
0:14:30 > 0:14:32I'm going to get a pickled onion in. Ugh!
0:14:32 > 0:14:35THEY LAUGH Guys! Lovely.
0:14:35 > 0:14:38I've now filled my mouth, unfortunately.
0:14:38 > 0:14:41But who do we think the winner should be?
0:14:41 > 0:14:43Calum! Calum!
0:14:43 > 0:14:45The winner... THEY CHANT
0:14:45 > 0:14:48..of Blue Peter's pancake-off is...
0:14:48 > 0:14:51It's Calum Scott! CHEERING
0:14:51 > 0:14:54- Fab work! Sorry.- So close, so close.
0:14:54 > 0:14:57You know who would have loved this, is Radzi Chinyanganya.
0:14:57 > 0:14:59Where's Radzi when you need him?
0:14:59 > 0:15:01Exactly, but fear not, we're about to see his little face,
0:15:01 > 0:15:03because you've been voting on which film of Radzi's
0:15:03 > 0:15:04you want to see again.
0:15:04 > 0:15:07Yes, you had the choice of watching Radzi harvesting peas,
0:15:07 > 0:15:11racing with a wool sack, or climbing a massive dam.
0:15:11 > 0:15:12That's right, and you chose...
0:15:13 > 0:15:15- ..climbing a massive dam.- Of course.
0:15:15 > 0:15:19It's his best challenge, it's so good. So guys, sit back, relax...
0:15:19 > 0:15:20Can I just interrupt?
0:15:20 > 0:15:22I've just remembered, with it being your big birthday year,
0:15:22 > 0:15:26- I have made...- Look at this! - ..some Blue Peter cupcakes!- Look!
0:15:26 > 0:15:28AUDIENCE WHOOP
0:15:28 > 0:15:30We're all going to have one, we're going to sit back
0:15:30 > 0:15:32and eat some cupcakes.
0:15:32 > 0:15:35- Enjoy this. Thank you! - You're very welcome. Get one!
0:15:39 > 0:15:41No!
0:15:41 > 0:15:43Argh! What?!
0:15:45 > 0:15:48Oh, no! What?
0:15:48 > 0:15:51This is the Diga di Luzzone.
0:15:51 > 0:15:53And on the face of the dam
0:15:53 > 0:15:57is the world's tallest man-made climbing wall.
0:15:57 > 0:15:59That is so much bigger than I thought it was going to be.
0:16:01 > 0:16:05There are over 650 climbing holds from bottom to top
0:16:05 > 0:16:07of this massive concrete structure.
0:16:12 > 0:16:14From above, the dam looks huge.
0:16:14 > 0:16:17From the bottom, it's immense.
0:16:17 > 0:16:19- Right then, see you up there. - Here we go.
0:16:22 > 0:16:27My biggest concern is that I use my arms too much at the start
0:16:27 > 0:16:30and I don't have enough energy left for the finish.
0:16:30 > 0:16:31You ready, Radzi?
0:16:31 > 0:16:33Let's go.
0:16:34 > 0:16:37For the first few metres, there's a handy ladder.
0:16:37 > 0:16:41But as soon as I reach the first hold, there's no turning back,
0:16:41 > 0:16:44and now it's all down to me.
0:16:45 > 0:16:46The climb is multi-pitch,
0:16:46 > 0:16:51which means it has five different sections, all about 30 metres long.
0:16:51 > 0:16:54We'll stop at the end of every pitch before attempting to climb the next.
0:16:54 > 0:16:57The holds are just like indoor climbing holds,
0:16:57 > 0:16:59only there's a lot more of them.
0:16:59 > 0:17:03So, I'm now as high as I've ever been on an indoor climbing wall.
0:17:06 > 0:17:10So, now I've got to go this times maybe seven or eight.
0:17:13 > 0:17:1530 minutes in, the first pitch is done.
0:17:15 > 0:17:19And I know what my view is going to look like for the next new hours.
0:17:19 > 0:17:21And now look what is to my right.
0:17:22 > 0:17:24Concrete. What is to my left?
0:17:26 > 0:17:28Concrete. What's beneath me?
0:17:28 > 0:17:30A lot of concrete.
0:17:36 > 0:17:38But there's no time to hang around.
0:17:38 > 0:17:41On the face of the dam, I'm completely exposed.
0:17:41 > 0:17:46The sun is directly above us, it's hot and it's sapping my energy.
0:17:46 > 0:17:48There is still such a long way to go.
0:17:48 > 0:17:50It's amazing how lonely you feel.
0:18:03 > 0:18:05If my mum were here, she would not be happy.
0:18:07 > 0:18:11She'd be screaming. Saying, "Radzi, be careful."
0:18:11 > 0:18:13Well, Mum, that's what I'm trying to be.
0:18:15 > 0:18:18After a few more holds, that's another pitch done.
0:18:18 > 0:18:22I can safely clip in and have a moment to rest and take stock.
0:18:24 > 0:18:27Now you can see this part of the wall, that's straight,
0:18:27 > 0:18:29that's off to the side.
0:18:29 > 0:18:33So, this pitch goes diagonally left. And...
0:18:36 > 0:18:38..from what everyone's saying,
0:18:38 > 0:18:42this could be one of the more tricky parts to this climb.
0:18:42 > 0:18:43So, this is time to focus.
0:18:45 > 0:18:49Time to regather my thoughts, regather my energies,
0:18:49 > 0:18:51and give this one the beans again.
0:18:53 > 0:18:55I've been climbing for over two hours.
0:18:55 > 0:18:58It's far longer than I've ever experienced
0:18:58 > 0:19:00and my arms are cramping up.
0:19:01 > 0:19:04This makes everything so much harder.
0:19:06 > 0:19:08As my body starts to fail,
0:19:08 > 0:19:12I begin to question if I've really got it in me to make it to the top.
0:19:15 > 0:19:18The last few metres have really taken their toll.
0:19:18 > 0:19:22And at the end of this pitch, I'm completely exhausted.
0:19:22 > 0:19:24Aggh! Aggh! SHE LAUGHS
0:19:26 > 0:19:30- That was all types of bad. - I know. Well done, Radzi.
0:19:32 > 0:19:34But there is no way I'm giving up now.
0:19:34 > 0:19:37- You going to try and lead this pitch?- I'm going to try and lead it.
0:19:37 > 0:19:39- Yeah, good one, Radzi.- Come on.
0:19:40 > 0:19:42Come on, Radzi.
0:19:42 > 0:19:45- With less than 30 metres to go... - You all right?
0:19:45 > 0:19:46..I'm taking the lead.
0:19:46 > 0:19:48I've felt fresher, I'll be honest.
0:19:52 > 0:19:56My arms are tired, my legs are tired.
0:19:56 > 0:20:00I'm pushing myself beyond what I ever thought was possible.
0:20:00 > 0:20:05I've been on this dam for almost five hours, and the end is in sight.
0:20:06 > 0:20:09There is no stopping me now.
0:20:12 > 0:20:14HE GASPS
0:20:14 > 0:20:18Ah, yes! Yeah!
0:20:25 > 0:20:29HE GRUNTS Ah!
0:20:30 > 0:20:33Ah, ah!
0:20:33 > 0:20:36Oh, that was so hard.
0:20:36 > 0:20:37Oh, can't believe I did that.
0:20:38 > 0:20:40I've never been so scared...
0:20:42 > 0:20:43..in all of my life.
0:20:44 > 0:20:46The amount of times I just wanted to give up.
0:20:46 > 0:20:48I thought I couldn't do that.
0:20:49 > 0:20:51My... My arms have got nothing.
0:20:53 > 0:20:55No, they've got absolutely nothing left.
0:20:55 > 0:20:59Every part of your body is telling you to stop.
0:21:00 > 0:21:02And you've just got to keep on going.
0:21:02 > 0:21:07I feel on top of the world right now.
0:21:07 > 0:21:10APPLAUSE
0:21:10 > 0:21:13Radzi! That's one of my fave challenges he's ever done.
0:21:13 > 0:21:15- We love you, Radz. - He so brave, isn't he?
0:21:15 > 0:21:17Now, Linds, I think it's time to announce

0:21:20 > 0:21:23- MUSIC PLAYS - Whoo!
0:21:23 > 0:21:26I feel silly, because you've done Strictly. I shouldn't be doing this.
0:21:26 > 0:21:28I think I should be dancing better than this.
0:21:28 > 0:21:30Anyway, this fan is always really kind and chatty
