:00:14. > :00:18.On today's live Blue Peter, my challenge to fly a plane is tone to
:00:18. > :00:21.a new level as I attempt to loop the loop in front of 10,000 people.
:00:21. > :00:26.I am going to be talking about this when I am 80.
:00:26. > :00:30.I visit a sculpture park to show how art can be made from rubbish.
:00:30. > :00:40.Plus, the award-winning author Anthony Horowitz is here live to
:00:40. > :00:55.
:00:55. > :01:00.Hello. Welcome to Blue Peter. Today we have loads in store for you,
:01:00. > :01:05.including a fiction writer like no other. He's written over 35 books
:01:05. > :01:09.and today sees the release of his latest. Anthony Horowitz is one of
:01:09. > :01:13.the UK's most successful authors. His books include the Alex Rider
:01:13. > :01:19.series, the best-selling teen spy stories which were adapted into a
:01:19. > :01:29.film in 2006 with actor Alex Pettyfer. The series is estimated
:01:29. > :01:33.to have sold over 13 million copies. He has also written the Power of 5
:01:33. > :01:39.novels and today sees the release of the final instalment Oblivion.
:01:39. > :01:43.We have made this studio look like Antarctic. You can hear the wind.
:01:43. > :01:46.Sorry about that! It's because I went there. Part of the latest book
:01:46. > :01:52.is set in Antarctic. That was serious research. That's right. I
:01:52. > :01:56.had to create this fortress called Oblivion, it finishes with a huge
:01:56. > :02:00.battle in Antarctic. The only way I could describe devils and demons
:02:00. > :02:06.and monsters and battles that were taking place on the ice was to go
:02:06. > :02:09.there, so I did. We have a clip of new Antarctic in your dry suit,
:02:09. > :02:14.ready for action, prepared for the elements. I have been working on
:02:14. > :02:20.this series for ten years and I have had to come to Antarctic to
:02:20. > :02:24.finish my most ambitious and final book. I have to describe the battle
:02:24. > :02:29.that takes place here in this extraordinary landscape. It's a
:02:29. > :02:33.very extreme environment. Did you want to go there anyway or did you
:02:33. > :02:37.feel you had to go for the book? It's the last great wilderness in
:02:37. > :02:41.the world. The book was always going to finish there. I planned
:02:41. > :02:45.this book a long time and I knew it would finish with a huge battle
:02:45. > :02:51.somewhere. If you think about it, where can you go in the world and
:02:51. > :02:54.find emptiness and ice and perpetual light and have a great
:02:54. > :02:59.battle? It seemed the obvious choice. You have been working on
:02:59. > :03:05.this series ten years. This is the final instalment, how do you feel
:03:05. > :03:09.about putting something that's gone on so long to bed? I am relieved,
:03:10. > :03:13.lots of young people enjoy it and I am glad it's over with, I have been
:03:13. > :03:16.living with these five characters from all over the world and now
:03:16. > :03:22.finally it's ended. I am relieved. You mentioned all over the world,
:03:22. > :03:25.you have been all over the world literally. We have it here, various
:03:25. > :03:30.places you have been, we talked about Antarctic.
:03:30. > :03:33.You must need a lot of imagination for that, there's nothing there.
:03:33. > :03:37.You look at the glaciers and with your imagination you can turn them
:03:38. > :03:40.into a fortress and into Castles and houses and whatever you want to
:03:40. > :03:45.see. One of the great pleasures of travelling is not just seeing what
:03:45. > :03:49.you see, but turning it into what you want it to be. You went also to
:03:49. > :03:53.Egypt and to Dubai. That's right. We have Cairo here, where part of
:03:53. > :03:59.the book is set, that was sand storms and pyramids and heat and
:03:59. > :04:03.civil war going on there, from there the heros go to Dubai, an
:04:03. > :04:07.extraordinary city which has no real reason to be there. All the
:04:07. > :04:10.sky-scrapers in the desert, it's a fantastic place. I was in south
:04:10. > :04:15.America, Peru for the second book in the series. You don't need to
:04:15. > :04:22.have read the early books to enjoy Oblivion, by the way. I went there
:04:22. > :04:27.for the mythology. Over to Hong Kong for the Chinese, Forbidden
:04:27. > :04:30.City. It's one of the great perks of my job. And yours, too. We get
:04:30. > :04:35.to go all over the place. If you were talking to a friend and saying
:04:35. > :04:39.I went to Oblivion last week, it's a place you invented but it doesn't
:04:39. > :04:44.sound like a holiday destination. It's the most epic book I have
:04:44. > :04:48.written and it's got a dark edge to it. But that's said, anybody who
:04:48. > :04:53.knows my work will know it's going to be mainly adventures and chases
:04:53. > :04:56.and escapes and explosions and all the rest. It's not that different
:04:56. > :04:59.from everything else I have done, just perhaps bigger and more epic.
:04:59. > :05:05.You are not here just to talk about books, you are here to answer
:05:05. > :05:10.questions. I will happily do that. Get on your thinking caps and send
:05:10. > :05:14.your questions to Anthony. Anything about any - I have to many
:05:14. > :05:18.questions, I want to talk about Peru! We shall get to that.
:05:18. > :05:21.Everybody knows if you reuse and recycle things you are helping out
:05:21. > :05:28.the environment but you are also helping the art world. I found out
:05:28. > :05:38.when I went to a sculpture park to turn trash into treasure.
:05:38. > :05:41.
:05:41. > :05:44.These are the stunning sculptures of Spanish artist Juan.
:05:44. > :05:48.Collectively they're worth tens of millions of pounds.
:05:48. > :05:54.For the really surprising thing about all this valuable artwork is
:05:54. > :05:58.that it began life as rubbish. To find out how to turn rubbish
:05:58. > :06:04.into beautiful works of art I am meeting Dan Jones, a local
:06:04. > :06:08.sculpture who specialises in recycled art. There is a saying one
:06:08. > :06:14.man's trash is another man's treasure. This is, well, that in
:06:14. > :06:19.real life, isn't it? Absolutely. It could be a pile of trash on the
:06:19. > :06:25.floor but it's been you assembled into an interesting way it becomes
:06:25. > :06:29.artwork. You can stand and Ponder it, but why is it worth millions?
:06:29. > :06:32.Probably because he was a famous artist and when he made it it was
:06:32. > :06:38.an important time in our history which will never happen again T
:06:38. > :06:42.will never be re-created. Can you use anything and and where can we
:06:42. > :06:45.find something to make such an interesting piece? Well, like he
:06:45. > :06:49.did we can find objects from around us and if we find them interesting
:06:49. > :06:54.we can put them together in an interesting way and make some
:06:54. > :06:57.fantastic artwork. All we need is crow ativity -- creativity.
:06:57. > :07:02.imagination. I can do that. Now that I have the low down on the
:07:02. > :07:07.work it's time for Dan and I to create some of our own Blue Peter
:07:07. > :07:11.artwork. It can hopefully go on display at the sculpture park. The
:07:11. > :07:16.artistic director will decide if our sculpture gets an official
:07:16. > :07:26.place. If our sculpture is going to make the grade we are going to need
:07:26. > :07:27.
:07:27. > :07:33.help. This is our sculpting team. Perfect! We have six hours to make
:07:33. > :07:36.a sculpture for the park. Luckily, Dan has a plan of action. It was a
:07:36. > :07:42.starting point. I have pre-made a few bits. If you think we can
:07:42. > :07:46.change some of these, let me know. Bring some of these big pieces
:07:46. > :07:56.across and bolt the section together. Dan's brought along
:07:56. > :07:57.
:07:57. > :08:02.reclaimed timber to get started. We are basically building the spine,
:08:02. > :08:12.the skeleton and add bits to it. Who says I never get my hands
:08:12. > :08:13.
:08:13. > :08:17.dirty?! There we go, well done. Now this is the kind of art I like!
:08:17. > :08:21.With the frame built it's time to get creative. If we can have a team
:08:21. > :08:25.making the water and a team building the sides that will be
:08:25. > :08:35.great to do that before lunch. will work on water. Who is with me?
:08:35. > :08:36.
:08:36. > :08:42.You three. We have three and three volunteers for the boat. Fantastic.
:08:42. > :08:45.The waves come across, they look like that, doesn't it? Yes. We want
:08:45. > :08:49.to make our boats look like it's cutting through water and in a boat
:08:49. > :08:54.sails along the waves and the wash fall away in front of it. So we are
:08:54. > :09:01.hoping that by using this shredded old swimming pool and some plastic
:09:01. > :09:07.bags we will be able to create that effect.
:09:07. > :09:12.These cable ties should keep our waves in place.
:09:12. > :09:16.It's definitely taking shape and it's looking like a real boat.
:09:16. > :09:20.It definitely looks more like a boat with that blue and the
:09:20. > :09:24.suggestion of the sea. Absolutely. It looks like it's in the sea
:09:24. > :09:29.especially with the foam splashing up on the side of the boat and the
:09:29. > :09:33.water alongside it. It looks great. Well, we have the bones of our
:09:33. > :09:39.structure but now we need to flesh it out. Come on guys, George, lead
:09:39. > :09:42.us to the trash. There you go guys. As well as milk
:09:42. > :09:52.cartons and bicycle wheels the team have brought their own rubbish from
:09:52. > :10:02.home to add a personal touch. There? Or on the bow of the ship?
:10:02. > :10:02.
:10:02. > :10:10.would say middle. Well done, Emily.
:10:10. > :10:15.If this went up and this was underneath... OK, right. Even if we
:10:15. > :10:21.could put it on something like this? Yeah, cool. That does look
:10:21. > :10:25.good. That's good!
:10:25. > :10:30.Our ship is definitely starting to take shape. But we definitely need
:10:30. > :10:40.some sails to make those masts look not so bare. It's time to get
:10:40. > :10:50.painting. We have finished the ship. Guys,
:10:50. > :10:53.
:10:53. > :10:58.it's time to do the honours. Ah! I think the sails are brilliant.
:10:58. > :11:08.Together we have created something that, fingers crossed, the deputy
:11:08. > :11:11.
:11:11. > :11:17.creator of the park is going to I am really impressed. You have
:11:17. > :11:23.done an absolutely fantastic job. I love the way you have the three
:11:23. > :11:26.colours, red, yellow and blue. It shows you don't need lots of money
:11:26. > :11:29.to make art, you need imagination and time and working together and
:11:29. > :11:34.that you can come up with absolutely anything. It's great as
:11:34. > :11:44.well that you have made the Blue Peter ship, of course! Can it stay?
:11:44. > :11:51.
:11:51. > :11:57.That really was a load of rubbish, wasn't it? No, not funny? No one
:11:57. > :12:01.noticed. Carry on. We are live, there we are! Moving on. That is on
:12:01. > :12:05.display until 4th November, so if you are near the Yorkshire
:12:05. > :12:10.sculpture park go and see it. you do, take a picture of yourself
:12:10. > :12:16.by it, you can go as a pirate, send us a picture and attacking boats
:12:16. > :12:19.and stuff. You never know, we might be able to send you a badge. If you
:12:19. > :12:24.are planning on watching the show next week, save some of these. Next
:12:24. > :12:27.week we have a Hallowe'en make for you involving plastic bottles. Do
:12:27. > :12:31.hang on to these. We love your makes. Every week we do something
:12:31. > :12:40.that inspires you and you send us things. It's a joy to open the post.
:12:40. > :12:46.Emily has sent us these models that were inspired by Nick Jolly on the
:12:46. > :12:51.show. I love Barney the dog's face on that. We also have had this sent
:12:51. > :12:54.in by Jenna, she already has her normal Blue Peter badge. You never
:12:54. > :13:00.know, she might earn a silver badge with this effort. Thank you very
:13:00. > :13:04.much. We like a bit of sparkly art. I love this photograph, it's Billy
:13:04. > :13:07.in a plane, he is 12 years old, it was his birthday recently. His
:13:07. > :13:10.parents bought him a flying lesson, he wants to be a commercial airline
:13:10. > :13:19.pilot and these are the pictures from that day. It's amazing.
:13:19. > :13:27.Obviously you have to do 45 hours to be a pilot. In a few years he
:13:27. > :13:33.may be flying across our skies. can't wait to board a plane and
:13:33. > :13:37.hear "hi, this is your Captain, Billy.". Before you know it he will
:13:37. > :13:42.be on Strictly Come Dancing, and that's back. Tomorrow night sees
:13:42. > :13:45.the start of Strictly Come Dancing. I can't help it! Obviously we will
:13:45. > :13:50.be finding out which ones you want to follow through the journey and
:13:50. > :13:56.who is going to be best. If we were to be on the show our dance moves
:13:56. > :14:02.aren't that great. Speak for yourself! They came in to show us
:14:02. > :14:07.how to do the Strictly thing. came in to show us some moves.
:14:08. > :14:12.Barney's response was to show Pasha the running man. If he does that
:14:12. > :14:17.this year it's all mine. It's not just a new celebrity line-up. I
:14:17. > :14:22.would love it if you did that! This year there is a new celebrity judge.
:14:22. > :14:29.The fabulous Darcey Bussell. You might recognise Darcey Bussell from
:14:29. > :14:39.the closing ceremony of the Olympics and if you are a ballerina
:14:39. > :14:39.
:14:39. > :14:42.you will know all about her. Here I am Darcey Bussell and I am a new
:14:42. > :14:48.judge John Strictly Come Dancing. In this series, I think you need to
:14:48. > :14:52.look out for the newest -- Louis Smith because of his strength and
:14:52. > :14:59.suppleness. And his competitive spirit. My thoughts on Dani Harmer
:14:59. > :15:04.or... I think she is going to be incredible in left's and compact
:15:04. > :15:08.moves. She is perfectly petite, and I think she is going to be great in
:15:09. > :15:13.all the details. Nicky Byrne, I think he will burn up the floor. I
:15:13. > :15:17.think he is just very cold. He has already strutted his stuff and when
:15:17. > :15:21.he walks across the dancefloor or, I think it will be interesting if
:15:21. > :15:26.he gains more or confidence. Kimberley Walsh, I think she is
:15:26. > :15:30.going to be a bombshell. She looks incredible. And she knows how to
:15:30. > :15:40.perform. She is going to have a lot of entertainment value. Keep
:15:40. > :15:42.
:15:42. > :15:45.watching, because you will always be entertained. And if you can
:15:45. > :15:49.already feel yourself being gripped by Strictly fever, head over to our
:15:49. > :15:52.website and there is a little treat there. Darcey Bussell has recorded
:15:52. > :15:56.that -- recorded a video to show you how to look your best on the
:15:56. > :15:59.dancefloor. You have already watched it five times. We have
:15:59. > :16:03.another treat in the studio, Anthony Horowitz, talking about his
:16:03. > :16:12.new book, Oblivion, released today. Loads of you have been in touch
:16:12. > :16:15.with questions. Straight to the video phone. Edward and Toby. Hello.
:16:15. > :16:25.What is your question for Anthony Kim mack who is your favourite
:16:25. > :16:26.
:16:26. > :16:31.character to write about? Hours is Smithers from the Alex Rider series.
:16:31. > :16:35.I love writing about Alex himself and a still miss writing about him.
:16:35. > :16:38.He is probably my favourite character to write about. Is that
:16:39. > :16:42.because you see yourself as a bit of a spiky and mack know, these are
:16:42. > :16:50.the thing I'm not and that is why he is so much fun. He is a great
:16:51. > :16:54.hero. Thank you, boys, enjoy the last book. Goodbye.
:16:54. > :16:58.No luck would like to know about the monsters and villains in your
:16:58. > :17:03.book. Which of your characters would you least like to meet?
:17:03. > :17:07.of Oblivion, and all the Power of Five books, it would be the
:17:07. > :17:12.chairman of the nitrites Corporation. He is very old, and he
:17:12. > :17:16.has no name. He is very nasty indeed and tease out for world
:17:16. > :17:23.domination. Based on a real person, but I cannot say who, for legal
:17:23. > :17:33.reasons. My only asks, what it would you give someone when they
:17:33. > :17:34.
:17:34. > :17:38.are trying to write a fight scene? -- Naomi. It is a question of
:17:38. > :17:42.finding the language. It is very difficult to write fight scenes
:17:42. > :17:46.because the language is limited. Do not put in too much violence,
:17:46. > :17:53.because teachers and public cares - - teachers and publishers do not
:17:53. > :17:58.like it. Leave a lot to the imagination. What are you doing, on
:17:59. > :18:04.the phone, have you no chairs? That is just me. What is your question
:18:04. > :18:09.for Anthony? What books did you love to read when you were 13?
:18:09. > :18:12.loved reading when I was 13 and I read the chronicles of Narnia book,
:18:13. > :18:16.and they are an inspiration for me. I love Tintin and the Lord Of the
:18:16. > :18:21.Rings, Tintin was the reason I did so much trouble because he was a
:18:21. > :18:27.travel -- traveller. I love the Willard Price stories, which are
:18:27. > :18:33.still in print. I read a lot and books were really my life. Thank
:18:33. > :18:36.you for your question. Anthony, thank you so much for coming in. It
:18:36. > :18:41.is lovely that you're wearing a gold Blue Peter badge. A I'm very
:18:41. > :18:45.excited by it. Almost as exciting as what is happening in two weeks
:18:45. > :18:51.time on Blue Peter. But rather than tell you, I'll watch this. Coming
:18:51. > :18:57.soon, the Blue Peter appeal. You have decorated T-shirts, you have
:18:57. > :19:02.made cards. And last year, debate a -- you made a difference. How can
:19:03. > :19:08.you get involved this year? All will be revealed soon. I cannot
:19:08. > :19:12.wait. Recently, Barney had a lifetime ambition realised when he
:19:12. > :19:15.took to the skies to fly a plane, but the challenge did not end there.
:19:15. > :19:19.With this being Blue Peter, you cannot just fly a plane, that is
:19:19. > :19:25.boring. What you want to see his me doing a loop the loop in front of
:19:25. > :19:29.10,000 people at the Bournemouth Air Festival. Yes? Here we go. Last
:19:29. > :19:33.week, I had a rough start to the day with my first training flight.
:19:33. > :19:37.After watching the guys do their thing and some top tips from my
:19:37. > :19:42.mentor, I took flight once more and it got pretty emotional. In a good
:19:42. > :19:46.way. I passed my training and now it is time for the big day. Today
:19:46. > :19:51.is the moment of truth. The last time I was out, I achieved a
:19:51. > :19:54.lifelong dream to fly a plane and perform a stunt. But that was just
:19:55. > :20:00.training. Today is a whole lot of experience. I am expected to
:20:00. > :20:05.perform that stand in front of an audience. Talk about pressure! --
:20:05. > :20:10.that stunt. You may remember the last time I got a little bit
:20:10. > :20:13.emotional. That is because when I was a little boy my grandad worked
:20:13. > :20:16.for British Aerospace and I would sit with him with a toy plane and
:20:16. > :20:20.make airplane noises, of flying it around the rim and hoping that one
:20:20. > :20:25.day I would get to fly the plane for real. So today and not just
:20:25. > :20:28.doing it for an audience, I'm doing it for my grandad. -- I am not just
:20:28. > :20:34.doing it for an audience, I am doing it for my grandad. Power you
:20:34. > :20:39.doing? Barney, great to see you. am very excited. Or you up for this
:20:39. > :20:49.scheme that more than you know. It is perfect weather. Time is moving
:20:49. > :20:51.
:20:51. > :20:56.on. Can you give me a hand pulling this out? That is it. Can you get a
:20:56. > :21:00.flying suit on? I am excited! The Bournemouth Air Festival attracts
:21:00. > :21:03.thousands each year and they expect the Blades to deliver. The
:21:03. > :21:06.spectators are arriving on the beach but we just need to run
:21:06. > :21:12.through a few safety checks and make sure I pay full attention to
:21:12. > :21:19.the brief. Are you nervous? Yes. Different from last time, your arm
:21:19. > :21:26.goes through that one and that one. If we end up in the water, to
