7:07:00 > 7:07:02Wow...yeah!

7:07:02 > 7:07:04Do you have to make that noise when you do it?

7:07:04 > 7:07:06- It makes it look better. - I'll remember that!

7:07:06 > 7:07:08I've heard you talk about a thing called locking.

7:07:08 > 7:07:10First of all, what actually is that?

7:07:10 > 7:07:11Locking...

7:07:11 > 7:07:13- A lock is another word for a stop. - OK.

7:07:13 > 7:07:18Yeah, so locking is locks, rolls, points...jumps...

7:07:18 > 7:07:20- Wow...- Look at that. - Oh, my goodness.

7:07:20 > 7:07:22And what's the key to a good lock?

7:07:22 > 7:07:24Strength, power, funkiness.

7:07:24 > 7:07:26- I like it. - Being on the music.

7:07:26 > 7:07:29All words that we do not possess. However, we'd love to give it a go.

7:07:29 > 7:07:31Speak for yourself, Radzi Chinyanganya!

7:07:31 > 7:07:32Wait till you see this.

7:07:32 > 7:07:34It's Blue Peter, we love having a go.

7:07:34 > 7:07:36Do you think, if I give you the mic, and you can commentate,

7:07:36 > 7:07:37you can teach Radz a move?

7:07:37 > 7:07:40- He needs the help.- We can. - As you saw, I'm the pro.

7:07:40 > 7:07:41- Off you go, Radz. - Bold, from Russell.

7:07:41 > 7:07:45- OK. So, Sunni is going to show you a knee drop.- OK.

7:07:45 > 7:07:47- Oh, oh... - Uh! Uh!

7:07:47 > 7:07:49- Nothing to it.- Simple, simple.

7:07:49 > 7:07:51So, you're going to start with your left leg out.

7:07:51 > 7:07:54- Yes.- Then you're going to switch it, so your right leg comes up,

7:07:54 > 7:07:57and then your right leg goes behind your knee,

7:07:57 > 7:07:59and then goes onto the floor, so your foot is on the floor.

7:07:59 > 7:08:01- Careful, Radz.- Spin around. - OK, spin around.

7:08:01 > 7:08:03And then you pose - uh!

7:08:03 > 7:08:04Oh! Oh! Oh!

7:08:04 > 7:08:06We're not done yet.

7:08:06 > 7:08:09- Not done yet? OK.- Right, so, we're going to do the same thing again,

7:08:09 > 7:08:10but this time, no hands on the floor.

7:08:10 > 7:08:12- No hands. OK, fine. - So, left leg out.

7:08:12 > 7:08:13- Yeah.- Switch legs.

7:08:13 > 7:08:15- Yeah.- Knee behind. Down.

7:08:15 > 7:08:17Go, go, go! Spin, spin!

7:08:17 > 7:08:18Uh!

7:08:18 > 7:08:21CHEERING Hey!

7:08:21 > 7:08:24Shall we try a quick move? Haven't got long, but let's do it.

7:08:24 > 7:08:26It's going to be a bit better than theirs, don't worry.

7:08:26 > 7:08:28- I like that. - Have you ever seen Thunderbirds?

7:08:28 > 7:08:29- Yeah.- Yes.

7:08:29 > 7:08:33- Puppet, right?- OK. - So, we're going to lift our arm,

7:08:33 > 7:08:35- pretend there's a string on your wrist...- Yeah.

7:08:35 > 7:08:36- Other arm.- Yeah.

7:08:36 > 7:08:38Then collapse our knees, then collapse our heads.

7:08:38 > 7:08:40- Boing!- No!- Oh, wow.

7:08:40 > 7:08:42I feel...kind of cool.

7:08:42 > 7:08:44- Left, knees, head. - OK, let's put it together.

7:08:44 > 7:08:45Five, six, seven, eight.

7:08:45 > 7:08:48Boom! Boom! Boom!

7:08:48 > 7:08:50LAUGHING: Yeah!

7:08:50 > 7:08:53That was great. Thank you. Thank you for being with us.

7:08:53 > 7:08:56Well, Brooke, Roxy, Sunni, thank you so much for joining us,

7:08:56 > 7:08:58and good luck in the championships.

7:08:58 > 7:09:01- We showed ourselves up there a bit, didn't we?- Yep.- But fear not.

7:09:01 > 7:09:04Look no further than the World Pasty Championships.

7:09:04 > 7:09:07- That's our next calling.- What? - Have a look.

7:09:08 > 7:09:10This is the Eden Project,

7:09:10 > 7:09:13home to one of the world's largest indoor rainforests.

7:09:13 > 7:09:15It is quite simply stunning.

7:09:15 > 7:09:18Even the Latin names for these plants are incredible and beautiful.

7:09:18 > 7:09:20Look at this - Simmondsia chinensis.

7:09:20 > 7:09:22It just sounds beautiful, doesn't it?

7:09:22 > 7:09:25But if you want to see something really exotic, take a look at this.

7:09:25 > 7:09:27This is...

7:09:27 > 7:09:29The Cornishius pastius.

7:09:29 > 7:09:31That's the real reason we're here today.

7:09:33 > 7:09:36Oh, yes, because I'm not here to see the stunning plantlife.

7:09:36 > 7:09:39Oh, no - I'm here because this place also hosts

7:09:39 > 7:09:40the World Pasty Championships,

7:09:40 > 7:09:43and this year, they have a new challenger.

7:09:43 > 7:09:45Me.

7:09:45 > 7:09:48I'm going to be entering the competition

7:09:48 > 7:09:50and trying to create a prize-winning Cornish pasty,

7:09:50 > 7:09:54but I don't know the first thing about making these famous treats.

7:09:54 > 7:09:58Luckily, though, Jake, Naomi and last year's junior champ Jack do.

7:09:58 > 7:10:00Let's talk about what makes the perfect pasty.

7:10:00 > 7:10:01Jack, what do you think?

7:10:01 > 7:10:05Well, you need to have fresh, home-grown ingredients, if you can.

7:10:05 > 7:10:08But they need to be, like, perfect.

7:10:08 > 7:10:10Use good ingredients in your pasty - OK.

7:10:10 > 7:10:11Then Jake, what would you say?

7:10:11 > 7:10:16Well, you've got to make sure it tastes good and not just looks good.

7:10:16 > 7:10:19These guys take this seriously - but who can blame them?

7:10:19 > 7:10:21The iconic Cornish pasty is a little piece of history.

7:10:21 > 7:10:23They were created hundreds of years ago

7:10:23 > 7:10:26for those working underground in the mines of Cornwall.

7:10:26 > 7:10:30Their unusual crimped crust gave the miners something to hold on to,

7:10:30 > 7:10:32without getting their lunch dirty.

7:10:33 > 7:10:35Well, I think it's time to get cracking,

7:10:35 > 7:10:38so I get some pastry - here's one I made earlier...

7:10:39 > 7:10:42- Doesn't look like a Cornish pasty, yet, does it?- No.

7:10:42 > 7:10:47You need to roll it to about 25 to 30 centimetres.

7:10:47 > 7:10:48What sort of shape am I going for, here?

7:10:48 > 7:10:51- A circle.- A circle. OK.

7:10:51 > 7:10:55For the filling, in goes potato, swede, onion, beef

7:10:55 > 7:10:57and Jack's special secret ingredient -

7:10:57 > 7:10:59clotted cream.

7:10:59 > 7:11:00Wait - what?

7:11:00 > 7:11:02What the clotted cream does

7:11:02 > 7:11:04is it makes a sort of gravy in the pasty.

7:11:04 > 7:11:07I'll have to trust you on this one, Jack.

7:11:07 > 7:11:09The ingredients are then placed onto the rolled pastry,

7:11:09 > 7:11:12which is folded, ready for crimping.

7:11:12 > 7:11:15You have to start from the right side,

7:11:15 > 7:11:20and then keeping on folding in a triangle, like that.

7:11:20 > 7:11:23It's this folding of the edge, called crimping,

7:11:23 > 7:11:26that seals the filling in and makes the pasty unique.

7:11:26 > 7:11:28Wow - that my first-ever pasty.

7:11:28 > 7:11:31- Can't eat it now, though, can we? - No. We need to put it in the oven.

7:11:31 > 7:11:3555 minutes in the oven and that's my traditional Cornish entry done.

7:11:35 > 7:11:38I'd also entered into the Open Savoury category.

7:11:38 > 7:11:40That means I can make another pasty,

7:11:40 > 7:11:42which gives me another shot to win the competition,

7:11:42 > 7:11:44and, also, I don't have to do the traditional food inside it.

7:11:44 > 7:11:46I can make anything I want.

7:11:46 > 7:11:48So, I'm going to make steak and blue cheese,

7:11:48 > 7:11:49which is a match made in heaven.

7:11:49 > 7:11:53So, I'm adding blue cheese to your classic recipe...

7:11:54 > 7:11:57..and a cheeky BP badge on top, obvs.

7:11:57 > 7:12:00Next stop, competition time.

7:12:03 > 7:12:06There are literally hundreds of pasties here,

7:12:06 > 7:12:08and the competition is tough.

7:12:08 > 7:12:10When I come to submit my crimped creations,

7:12:10 > 7:12:13I realise the rules on entering are even tougher.

7:12:13 > 7:12:15OK, so, for the Cornish pasty,

7:12:15 > 7:12:17are you a professional baker or cook?

7:12:17 > 7:12:20- No.- Does it have beef, potato, onion or swedes?

7:12:20 > 7:12:22- Yes.- Perfect. Is it side-crimped?

7:12:22 > 7:12:24- Yes.- Is it made in Cornwall?

7:12:24 > 7:12:26- Yes.- OK, perfect. So, you've passed that one.

7:12:26 > 7:12:29- Brilliant. Thank you very much. - Thank you.- This is exciting.

7:12:29 > 7:12:32Jake, Naomi and Jack also get their entries in,

7:12:32 > 7:12:35meaning all that's left is for me to pop mine on display.

7:12:35 > 7:12:37There you go.

7:12:37 > 7:12:39Mine, for sure, look very different.

7:12:39 > 7:12:40No-one is going to miss this.

7:12:40 > 7:12:42From space, actually - look how big that is.

7:12:42 > 7:12:46I've got my savoury and I've got my traditional.

7:12:46 > 7:12:47And, while we're being traditional,

7:12:47 > 7:12:49why not stick a Blue Peter flag in there as well?

7:12:49 > 7:12:53So that everyone knows just how good a chef I am.

7:12:55 > 7:12:58The judges will score each pasty out of 100,

7:12:58 > 7:13:01so, as we await the results, I want to know what these guys

7:13:01 > 7:13:04with a passion for pastry think of my efforts.

7:13:04 > 7:13:05Hello, junior judges.

7:13:05 > 7:13:07ALL: Hello!

7:13:07 > 7:13:10So, here is a pasty that's been made by me.

7:13:10 > 7:13:12It's my first time, so, be nice.

7:13:12 > 7:13:16The score is out of 100. Take a piece and see what you think.

7:13:20 > 7:13:23So, if you were going to give me a score out of 100, what would it be?

7:13:23 > 7:13:25- 100.- OK.

7:13:25 > 7:13:27- 1,000!- 1,000 out of 100? That's a good score.

7:13:27 > 7:13:28Thank you for trying them.

7:13:28 > 7:13:30Shall I see if anyone else wants to try them?

7:13:30 > 7:13:32- Can I take another one? - You want another one?

7:13:32 > 7:13:33- Really? It's that good? - ALL: Yeah.

7:13:33 > 7:13:36Sadly, though, these guys don't actually decide the competition,

7:13:36 > 7:13:39so it's time to find out how I've done.

7:13:39 > 7:13:40Has he done it?

7:13:40 > 7:13:42Cue the tension music.

7:13:42 > 7:13:46The winner of the Open Savoury Pasty Amateur is...

7:13:46 > 7:13:48Don McKeever.

7:13:48 > 7:13:52Right - so, maybe the steak and Stilton wasn't my best idea.

7:13:52 > 7:13:56But I've still got my traditional Cornish - come on!

7:13:56 > 7:13:58And the winner is...

7:13:58 > 7:14:00Vanessa Farr.

7:14:00 > 7:14:02Oh, well. Better luck next time.

7:14:02 > 7:14:03You can't win them all.

7:14:03 > 7:14:06But Naomi and Jack both get third place in their categories.

7:14:06 > 7:14:08What an effort!

7:14:08 > 7:14:12And as the pastry dust settles, I get my scores from the judges.

7:14:12 > 7:14:15I got a total of 38/100.

7:14:15 > 7:14:17That was for my savoury one, the steak and cheese,

7:14:17 > 7:14:19which I thought, actually, was the worst one.

7:14:19 > 7:14:22Underneath that, we've got the traditional pasty.

7:14:22 > 7:14:24I got 48/100. That's not too bad.

7:14:24 > 7:14:26OK, I take it on board.

7:14:26 > 7:14:28I'm not best pasty maker in the world.

7:14:28 > 7:14:30But what I have done is enjoyed myself -

7:14:30 > 7:14:33not just the tasting and the cooking, but the learning.

7:14:33 > 7:14:37And who knows what's going to happen next year.

7:14:37 > 7:14:39I'll be back.

7:14:39 > 7:14:41And you're going to be a champion, Barn.

7:14:41 > 7:14:43- Thank you very much for dropping this little beauty off.- Aw!

7:14:43 > 7:14:46- An actual Cornish pasty. - Looks quite delicious, doesn't it?

7:14:46 > 7:14:48Now, of course, Barney wasn't lucky enough

7:14:48 > 7:14:51to be crowned the World Pasty Champ, which he wanted,

7:14:51 > 7:14:54but I think we should crown the Blue Peter fan of the month.

7:14:54 > 7:14:55- Cue the music. - FANFARE

7:22:06 > 7:22:09I'd just be sad that I wouldn't be able to do my dream,

7:22:09 > 7:22:11cos I wouldn't have the education

7:22:13 > 7:22:17I stayed at home, doing nothing.

7:22:56 > 7:22:58because of what happened to his village,

7:22:58 > 7:22:59but then happy at the ending,

7:22:59 > 7:23:02because Red Nose Day changed his life.

7:23:02 > 7:23:05I think he was so brave, because it must be really hard

7:23:05 > 7:23:07to deal with, you know, not going to school,

7:23:07 > 7:23:09not having any friends to talk to and play with.

7:23:09 > 7:23:12So, this next film about Ikmatu.

7:24:04 > 7:24:07I think that's a really good skill to have.

7:24:16 > 7:24:21I became a volunteer peer educator during the Ebola outbreak

7:24:21 > 7:24:24because I saw that the adults were afraid.

7:24:26 > 7:24:30I had to be brave and talk to people calmly
