0:00:03 > 0:00:06Coming up on a very special edition of Blue Peter -

0:00:06 > 0:00:09I take to the seas for a daring mission.

0:00:09 > 0:00:12I scale the heights on one of Britain's oldest ships.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15I've never held on to something so tight in my life.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18I face one of my more unusual challenges.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23And Helen and I reveal our very best Blue Peter moment together.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25SCREAMING

0:00:45 > 0:00:49- Hello!- Hello! Now, the Olympics are currently in full swing.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52Athletes from all over the world are right here in the UK

0:00:52 > 0:00:54striving to achieve their very best.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57To celebrate, we're looking back at some of the great things

0:00:57 > 0:01:00we've been able to bring you on Blue Peter... stop it!

0:01:00 > 0:01:03- Trying to concentrate, aren't I?- I like that.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05And we're going to be counting down to some of our best bits.

0:01:05 > 0:01:08It's been so difficult to pick our top five, but I have to say

0:01:08 > 0:01:11my favourite thing about the show is that I get to explore my passion for

0:01:11 > 0:01:14photography with you, as we've been designing the Blue Peter calendar.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17And, each month, there's a different discipline for a different picture.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20My favourite has to be light painting. Have a look at this.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23Michael Bosanko is an incredible photographer and a very kind man.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26He took that picture and it's one of the most difficult things to do,

0:01:26 > 0:01:27but he makes it look so easy.

0:01:27 > 0:01:28Very clever technique, isn't it?

0:01:28 > 0:01:30When he offered us the chance to come down

0:01:30 > 0:01:33and show us how to do it, we, of course, jumped at the chance

0:01:33 > 0:01:36and that's why it's number five in our countdown.

0:01:38 > 0:01:42I can't begin to tell you how excited I am about tonight's shoot.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46And I'm doing so much more than just taking a photograph.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49Tonight, I'm going to learn how to create a unique piece of art.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53Now, you may be sat there wondering what that's got to do

0:01:53 > 0:01:56with a man waving around some funny lights.

0:01:56 > 0:01:57Well, follow us over here.

0:01:59 > 0:02:00Let's have a look.

0:02:03 > 0:02:07Ah! And there he is. That's what it's all about.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09This is light painting.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12That click you hear when you take a picture is the shutter

0:02:12 > 0:02:14opening and closing very fast.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17When the shutter opens, it lets the light through to the lens

0:02:17 > 0:02:21and then that records on the sensor and you have a regular photo.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24The longer the shutter stays open, the more time the light has to make

0:02:24 > 0:02:27an image on the sensor, and then you get something like Michael's work.

0:02:27 > 0:02:31As we're out at night in the middle of the forest,

0:02:31 > 0:02:34I think it's only right that my photo has haunted theme.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36What do you reckon?

0:02:36 > 0:02:39Yes, good. It's going to take a lot of effort, though.

0:02:39 > 0:02:40I thought this might be the case.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42There's a lot of detail there, isn't there?

0:02:42 > 0:02:46It just so happens I've met a team of light painting enthusiasts.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49- They are itching to get going. Shall we meet them?- Yes, go on.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53This crack squad of helpers are the hardest workers in town

0:02:53 > 0:02:56and they need to be with what I've got planned for them.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58OK, guys, take a look at this. Everyone gather round.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01Aaron, the tallest, you're going to do the moon.

0:03:01 > 0:03:02Megan, you're going to do the face.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05- What kind of face are you going to go for?- Scary.

0:03:05 > 0:03:06- We all know what we're doing?- Yeah.

0:03:06 > 0:03:10After a quick crash course from expert, Michael...

0:03:10 > 0:03:12This is your starting point and finish point.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15..we're primed for our first attempt at the calendar photo.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17Ready? Go.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27It's getting there, guys. Michael, have a look at this.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30Yes, you can see how it's going. It's really good.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33We are so close to creating a masterpiece.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36All it needs is a bit of fine tweaking.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38Thomas? You know your starbursts?

0:03:38 > 0:03:42Bring a few out here as well and hold the torch really still.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45Quite low as well, because it picks up anything on the ground.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48- Everyone ready to do another one? - Yes!- OK.

0:03:49 > 0:03:50That might look good,

0:03:50 > 0:03:53but if you were going against the tree it would reflect the light.

0:03:55 > 0:03:56After five attempts,

0:03:56 > 0:04:00we finally got a photo worthy of a place in the Blue Peter calendar.

0:04:01 > 0:04:06- Ah, look at that. Nailed it on the last take. Who wants to see it?- Me!

0:04:06 > 0:04:08You ready? Here we go.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11- I think that looks wicked. What do you reckon?- Yeah!

0:04:11 > 0:04:13Michael, you happy?

0:04:13 > 0:04:16Superb. Phenomenal. Well done, guys.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18Look at that. We are artistes!

0:04:20 > 0:04:24And here it is, the finished picture as part of Blue Peter's calendar.

0:04:24 > 0:04:26One final thank you to Michael Bosanko,

0:04:26 > 0:04:28who lent us all of his technical gear on the night

0:04:28 > 0:04:32and spent a lot of time helping us achieve that wonderful photo.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35I want to thank you for sending in your efforts. Jamie's been in touch.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38He had a go at light photography and created this smiley face.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40Thank you for that, Jamie.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42Thomas has drawn a ghost.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45It's kind of got a skirt on and is being chased round the park.

0:04:45 > 0:04:47It's brilliant. Thank you very much.

0:04:47 > 0:04:49- It's not got a skirt on! - You've got a skirt like that.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52And also, Lewis, who sent in this picture, it's a flowery picture

0:04:52 > 0:04:55and you can just see the shadow in the middle of it.

0:04:55 > 0:04:56It looks a bit like the petal,

0:04:56 > 0:04:58but that's actually Lewis being lit up by the light.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00Thank you for sending us your stuff. We love it.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02We do love it when you get involved,

0:05:02 > 0:05:05and loads of you took part in the challenge we set you.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08We wanted to find the best animal photograph.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12So many entries, but the winner was Evie McLoughlin, who's 13.

0:05:12 > 0:05:16She sent in this photograph of guinea pigs who appear to be

0:05:16 > 0:05:19on some sort of start line, and that made it onto our calendar.

0:05:19 > 0:05:20What a legend Evie is.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23We like pictures that tell a story and this one definitely does.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25And it's funny as well. And it's really well composed.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28It fitted all the criteria for the judges and that's why it won.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31Photos, letters, e-mails, whatever you would like to send us,

0:05:31 > 0:05:33keep them coming in. We really enjoy reading them.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36Now, one of the best things about being a Blue Peter presenter

0:05:36 > 0:05:39is that we really get to take on some amazing challenges

0:05:39 > 0:05:41and you get to get stuck into the action.

0:05:41 > 0:05:45We love to know that you guys are along for the ride with us, as well.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56Oh, yeah.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03- Nope!- Ha!

0:06:03 > 0:06:06That's incredible. No hands on the steering wheel.

0:06:48 > 0:06:54- I forgot about that! You kicked that guy off his luge.- I did not!

0:06:54 > 0:06:55- Yes, you did.- I was trying to brake.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58He's pretending he's not competitive in a race situation.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00- You basically went, have that! - Yes, I kicked him.

0:07:00 > 0:07:04You know, we're pretty lucky. We get to do some amazing things.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06Going to the South Pole was tough, but it was an absolute privilege.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09We're often put to the test as Blue Peter presenters

0:07:09 > 0:07:10but it's important that, at those moments,

0:07:10 > 0:07:13you stand tall and stay strong. Isn't that right?

0:07:13 > 0:07:15The worst thing you can ever do on this show

0:07:15 > 0:07:17is tell the bosses what you're afraid of.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20Because I hate rats. So, what do they make me do?

0:07:20 > 0:07:23Of course - lie in a coffin full of rats. They were all over me.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26Another time I had to face my fear was

0:07:26 > 0:07:29when I attempted an old tradition known as "the beard of bees".

0:07:29 > 0:07:33I basically had to coax a swarm of bees onto my face.

0:07:33 > 0:07:34It hurt a lot,

0:07:34 > 0:07:38and that's why it makes it to number four in our countdown.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40Ugh, I'm itchy!

0:07:40 > 0:07:42I'm about to take on the beard of bees.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44You've done this before, haven't you?

0:07:44 > 0:07:47I have to say, the first one I did, it was a little bit scary.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50You've got bees crawling up towards your eyes and they start to nibble,

0:07:50 > 0:07:52because they're trying to build comb.

0:07:52 > 0:07:56So, don't worry if you start to get a bit freaked out.

0:07:56 > 0:08:00- What if they sting me?- If they sting you, you just have to stay still.

0:08:00 > 0:08:02Let us know, and I'm sure we will be able to work it out,

0:08:02 > 0:08:04because you'll probably squeal.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07I was taking no chances.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10The bees can't walk on that, so that will stop them

0:08:10 > 0:08:12crawling up around your eyes, OK?

0:08:12 > 0:08:16If you do get a bit too panicked, or you start to get stung

0:08:16 > 0:08:18we should have a signal, I think.

0:08:18 > 0:08:19Just do that, right?

0:08:19 > 0:08:22Agreed. If you do that, we get the beard off. Let's go!

0:08:24 > 0:08:26Right, Oh, my Lord.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30We've just opened a box of bees, and there are hundreds.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35I cannot believe they're all going to be on my face.

0:08:35 > 0:08:37Ohh!

0:08:37 > 0:08:41The Queen was inside this wire cage, and where she went,

0:08:41 > 0:08:44the rest of the colony would follow.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48Let's get the queen bee on your chin, then.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51I tell you, the noise is as bad as anything, isn't it?

0:08:51 > 0:08:53Right, you hold the queen.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56If you suspend her by the bottom of the cage

0:08:56 > 0:08:59then I'll tie it behind her head.

0:08:59 > 0:09:01Can you move your chin forward a bit, Helen?

0:09:01 > 0:09:03Oh, they're all over me!

0:09:03 > 0:09:04That's me.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06Is it looking good? Will we tie it there?

0:09:06 > 0:09:08Lean forward a touch. All right?

0:09:08 > 0:09:11Keep her there, and keep calm.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13I'm on a beach, I'm on a beach, I'm on a beach!

0:09:14 > 0:09:17Is that the sound of the waves or the bees?

0:09:17 > 0:09:20The sound is quite intimidating, isn't it?

0:09:20 > 0:09:22OK, bees, get on with this.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27They're coming up gently, very gently.

0:09:27 > 0:09:31Oh, it's so weird on my neck. It's so tickly!

0:09:32 > 0:09:33SHE SHRIEKS

0:09:36 > 0:09:41'The secret to not being stung is to keep yourself perfectly still.

0:09:41 > 0:09:44'Obviously, I was working with experts,

0:09:44 > 0:09:46'so please don't try this at home!'

0:09:47 > 0:09:51They're getting close to my mouth now, so I'm going to stop talking.

0:09:55 > 0:09:57This is so weird!

0:10:07 > 0:10:09Just step back a bit, back a bit more.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12It is just like a constant tickling, isn't it,

0:10:12 > 0:10:14all over your face and neck?

0:10:17 > 0:10:19SHE MOANS SOFTLY

0:10:19 > 0:10:21I really want to laugh, but I daren't!

0:10:25 > 0:10:26HELEN LAUGHS

0:10:26 > 0:10:30It is so hard, isn't it, not to scratch or tickle?

0:10:31 > 0:10:33Oh, this ain't so bad.

0:10:35 > 0:10:36I'm going to take the cross away

0:10:36 > 0:10:40and then you'll be the only thing in the vicinity for them to pitch on.

0:10:40 > 0:10:42OK!

0:10:43 > 0:10:47Good, now I'm all on my own. Thanks(!)

0:10:47 > 0:10:52Nothing else for the bees to sit on or rest on. Just me.

0:11:01 > 0:11:02It's looking quite good.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05It is looking good.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07This is a new one, body of bees.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10I can hear them in my ears, sort of going, "Rrrr!"

0:11:10 > 0:11:12'Most people do this for a few minutes.

0:11:12 > 0:11:17'I was there for 20 before the bees finally lost patience.'

0:11:17 > 0:11:18Argh!

0:11:18 > 0:11:20Stung me, stung me, stung me! On my face!

0:11:20 > 0:11:23- Yeah, she's got a sting on her face.- OK.- Smoke her.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27- Oh, get off, get off. - Take the queenie out.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34- Well, they like me, don't they? - Don't they just!

0:11:36 > 0:11:40I was itchy. They were in my hair and in my top. Ugh!

0:11:40 > 0:11:42I can't believe you got stung.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45I got stung about seven times. Apparently, when one bee stings you,

0:11:45 > 0:11:47it sends off a warning signal to the others,

0:11:47 > 0:11:49so that's why the guys started to panic,

0:11:49 > 0:11:52because they knew that once I'd been stung once, I'd get more stings.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55What was the smoke machine for? A disco or something?

0:11:55 > 0:11:57The smoke doesn't hurt the bees. It's basically to get them

0:11:57 > 0:12:00to clear off me, because they don't like it, so they fly away from it.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02It really is quite brave.

0:12:02 > 0:12:07One more example of why Helen Skelton is as amazing as she is, everybody.

0:12:07 > 0:12:08Thanks.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11Now, we're all very proud of what we make and do here on Blue Peter,

0:12:11 > 0:12:12especially when we find out

0:12:12 > 0:12:16you've been having a go at making them at home, too.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23Right, where do we start?

0:12:23 > 0:12:24It's still saveable.

0:12:30 > 0:12:34Remember it doesn't matter what it looks like. You can't go wrong.

0:12:44 > 0:12:46Tunnel is ready.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51Here's one I made earlier!

0:12:51 > 0:12:54Christmas star, courtesy of Shezza.

0:12:58 > 0:13:05- OK, hang on a second.- Ha-ha! - Go on.- That is genius.- Yeah, yeah.

0:13:05 > 0:13:07It was a bit crunchy, that slice, I have to say.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10I hate it when you get stuff on your glasses. That made me cringe.

0:13:10 > 0:13:12I loved it when Ed Sheeran came in

0:13:12 > 0:13:14and made a Christmas decoration with us.

0:13:14 > 0:13:18He made one which was very much like that, but he gave his away to a fan.

0:13:18 > 0:13:20That is because Ed Sheeran is the nicest guy on the planet.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23What about these bracelets made for Mother's Day from recycled stuff?

0:13:23 > 0:13:25I made brooches as well. They went down very well -

0:13:25 > 0:13:27loads of you got in touch to tell us.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30We love your photos of the things you've made, so keep them coming in.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32Especially when it's food. Take a look at these bad boys.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34These are lovely Jubilee jellies

0:13:34 > 0:13:38that have been sent in by Amina from Denbighshire.

0:13:38 > 0:13:40I wish they really were sent in. I'd have eat them.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43We made some chameleon juice with Stefan Gates.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45And we got a picture of those from Carol.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48And Barney seems to love this little knitted penguin,

0:13:48 > 0:13:50so thank you very much for that.

0:13:50 > 0:13:52This is a plaque on the front of the table

0:13:52 > 0:13:53sent in by Ozan from Birmingham.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56Real detail. I love it when they do the Blue Peter ship.

0:13:56 > 0:13:57It's amazing, isn't it?

0:13:57 > 0:14:00You guys seem to absolutely love the sock puppets.

0:14:00 > 0:14:02We particularly loved this one, by Elias in Morecambe.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04It is an Ood from Doctor Who.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07Just as scary as the real thing!

0:14:07 > 0:14:10This is a union flag, sent in by Alicia, made of those beads you iron.

0:14:10 > 0:14:12I wish I could do that.

0:14:12 > 0:14:14And Daniel wrote us a very scary book.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16We both had a scan through it

0:14:16 > 0:14:19and we've been fighting over who gets to read through it properly,

0:14:19 > 0:14:20so thank you for that, Daniel.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23Now, we get loads of different bits and pieces sent into us

0:14:23 > 0:14:25and it does take our team quite a while to get through them all,

0:14:25 > 0:14:28so bear with us. Someone will get in touch.

0:14:28 > 0:14:30Because everything we get is looked at by us and the team.

0:14:30 > 0:14:34The address to send your bits and bobs to is...

0:14:39 > 0:14:42You must remember to put your name and address on whatever it is

0:14:42 > 0:14:44you've made because, otherwise, we can't send you a badge.

0:14:44 > 0:14:48True say, Blu-Ray! Now, something for a bit of expert help.

0:14:48 > 0:14:50Back in 1869, the Cutty Sark was built.

0:14:50 > 0:14:52It's one of the most famous ships in the world.

0:14:52 > 0:14:55But in 2007, it was under threat from fire

0:14:55 > 0:14:57and nearly all of it was destroyed.

0:14:57 > 0:15:00So, since then, experts have been renovating it to its former glory,

0:15:00 > 0:15:03so I went along to put some finishing touches on, as you do.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06Unfortunately, I didn't know what I was letting myself in for

0:15:06 > 0:15:09and that's why it's number three in our countdown.

0:15:13 > 0:15:16'I gingerly take my first steps on the rigging.'

0:15:18 > 0:15:21When this boat was built they didn't have the technical stuff we've got.

0:15:21 > 0:15:23- They just climbed it. - They just climbed it.

0:15:23 > 0:15:29They were either really brave or really daft.

0:15:29 > 0:15:32'Climbing rigging isn't like climbing a solid ladder.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34'Every step is wobbly and scary.'

0:15:34 > 0:15:35Oh, my goodness!

0:15:37 > 0:15:38Oh!

0:15:38 > 0:15:41'It's hard to believe, if you worked on a ship like this,

0:15:41 > 0:15:45'climbing to the top of the mast would be part of your everyday job,

0:15:45 > 0:15:46'often in howling storms.'

0:15:49 > 0:15:50(That is so far down!)

0:15:50 > 0:15:53Be brave, Barney, be brave.

0:15:53 > 0:15:55People watching. Be brave.

0:15:55 > 0:15:58I really don't want to be here right now.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03Ah! Ah, mate!

0:16:03 > 0:16:04OK?

0:16:04 > 0:16:07Yeah, I'm good, I'm glad we're here.

0:16:07 > 0:16:11Just when I think I've made it, Andy breaks the bad news.

0:16:11 > 0:16:15Can we go up to the yard above? Are you good for that?

0:16:15 > 0:16:17BARNEY LAUGHS NERVOUSLY

0:16:17 > 0:16:22'I've got to climb another 5m to reach the penultimate yardarm.

0:16:22 > 0:16:25'That's the name for the horizontal beam that sails hang off.'

0:16:26 > 0:16:30- You can step across onto that rope, as well.- Oh, you're kidding.

0:16:30 > 0:16:33And both feet on there. Grab hold of that handle.

0:16:33 > 0:16:37Got to be kidding. Woah, woah! Oh!

0:16:38 > 0:16:40Oh, what!?

0:16:43 > 0:16:47So there's literally just a bit of rope between me and the ground.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50And what, a 45-50 metre drop?

0:16:50 > 0:16:53- Yeah, about that. - That is phenomenal.

0:16:53 > 0:16:56What a feeling. I've never held onto something so tightly in my life.

0:16:56 > 0:16:58'Now I'm here,

0:16:58 > 0:17:00'there's the simple matter of hoisting a line into place.'

0:17:00 > 0:17:03BARNEY LAUGHS

0:17:03 > 0:17:04I'm having a moment.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07It's just getting my head round the fact that I'm stood

0:17:07 > 0:17:12on a very small rope, dangling hundreds of metres in the air.

0:17:12 > 0:17:13But it's all good. I'm there.

0:17:13 > 0:17:18You can see behind you this wooden block and the wire in the rope.

0:17:18 > 0:17:21What you need to do now is release this rope that's holding it in,

0:17:21 > 0:17:24so that you can swing it down into place, nice and safely,

0:17:24 > 0:17:26so that it'll be there for ever more.

0:17:26 > 0:17:30If you grab that with one hand, that will hold the rope

0:17:30 > 0:17:33while you do it, and start untying the knot.

0:17:33 > 0:17:36- You can watch it dropping away, - And there she goes.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42Wow! Does this have a function on the ship?

0:17:42 > 0:17:45These control the yards and stop them swinging around.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48It also allows us to position the yards, so we can sail.

0:17:48 > 0:17:52- That's brilliant. So we're all done.- That's the job complete.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55'After climbing this high, all I've managed to do is undo a knot

0:17:55 > 0:17:59'and secure one line of the Cutty Sark's huge web of rigging.

0:17:59 > 0:18:00'But, do you know what? It's my rope.

0:18:00 > 0:18:02'Barney's rope!'

0:18:02 > 0:18:06Now, there is one more thing. Can we get down now?

0:18:12 > 0:18:15Stay tuned to find out if Barney makes it back.

0:18:15 > 0:18:17Oh, I'm here, aren't I? It was so scary up there.

0:18:17 > 0:18:19If you've ever been that high up,

0:18:19 > 0:18:22you probably know it's pretty windy. Was that moving at all?

0:18:22 > 0:18:25Not in the slightest but it was still terrifying. I'm never doing it again.

0:18:25 > 0:18:28But I'm glad I did. Go to Greenwich and check out the Cutty Sark. What?

0:18:28 > 0:18:32- I'm just patting you in an affectionate way.- Thanks, Helen.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35Go and see the Cutty Sark. It's brilliant. You can see Barney's rope.

0:18:35 > 0:18:37Time to move on to another maritime adventure

0:18:37 > 0:18:39and one that I will certainly never forget.

0:18:39 > 0:18:43I went along to join the Royal Navy's Sea King crew to find out

0:18:43 > 0:18:45what happens when things go wrong on the ocean wave.

0:18:45 > 0:18:48It's number two in our countdown.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54So we need to look out for the lifeboat, which on a day like today

0:18:54 > 0:18:57is quite easy, because it's bright orange.

0:18:57 > 0:18:59But imagine doing this at night, in the dark.

0:19:01 > 0:19:02Oh, wow!

0:19:02 > 0:19:04And there it is!

0:19:04 > 0:19:07That's going quite quick, we're going quite quick.

0:19:07 > 0:19:12We're going over 100 miles an hour, and I'm going to land on that?

0:19:12 > 0:19:14It's choppier than I thought it would be.

0:19:14 > 0:19:16I was more confident yesterday. "I'll be fine."

0:19:16 > 0:19:18Now, I'm like, "Oh, wow."

0:19:18 > 0:19:21'This is it. Me and the winch.

0:19:22 > 0:19:24'Suddenly, that wire is looking even thinner.'

0:19:27 > 0:19:29My stomach is doing somersaults!

0:19:35 > 0:19:38HELEN SCREAMS

0:19:38 > 0:19:40'I only managed to land properly once in training

0:19:40 > 0:19:42'and this is ten times worse.

0:19:42 > 0:19:46'The boat I'm aiming for is rocking side to side

0:19:46 > 0:19:48'and spray is flying in my eyes.'

0:19:48 > 0:19:50Eight yards.

0:19:50 > 0:19:52This is absolutely nuts!

0:19:52 > 0:19:54HELEN SCREAMS

0:19:54 > 0:19:56I really want to land on my feet.

0:19:56 > 0:19:59'And then it happens.

0:19:59 > 0:20:02'The landing I'd been dreading. I misjudged the movement of the boat

0:20:02 > 0:20:04'and hit the railing - hard.'

0:20:06 > 0:20:09When I got to the boat, I thought my legs were underneath the railings.

0:20:09 > 0:20:12I got my legs round the railings.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15The next thing, I was looking at the sea.

0:20:15 > 0:20:19'There's no time to celebrate getting onto the boat in one piece.

0:20:19 > 0:20:21'I'm here to work.

0:20:22 > 0:20:25'Winchmen are also trained paramedics,

0:20:25 > 0:20:28'so my first job is to assess the state of the casualty.

0:20:28 > 0:20:30'In this case, he's the 771 training dummy,

0:20:30 > 0:20:33'affectionately known as Dead Fred.

0:20:33 > 0:20:38'There is still hope for Fred. I signal for a stretcher ASAP.

0:20:39 > 0:20:43'The guys from the RNLI set up a rope between the helicopter

0:20:43 > 0:20:46'and the lifeboat, to guide the stretcher safely in.'

0:20:53 > 0:20:56Go on to the deck and work it again.

0:20:57 > 0:20:59Finished, then? Good work.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02'The helicopter retreats to a safe distance

0:21:02 > 0:21:05'while we secure the casualty in the stretcher.'

0:21:06 > 0:21:11Hi, Rob, we're ready for you. Casualty is happy!

0:21:11 > 0:21:13'I guide the helicopter back in

0:21:13 > 0:21:15'and we set up the guide rope all over again.'

0:21:20 > 0:21:21Up and off and clear.

0:21:22 > 0:21:24How are we doing? Great winch.

0:21:26 > 0:21:29'One stretcher and casualty safely in the back of the helicopter.

0:21:29 > 0:21:33'Now all we have to do is get the rescuer back to safety.'

0:21:51 > 0:21:54Just grab the handhold, bring yourself in.

0:21:58 > 0:22:00And for her dedication, Helen receives her stripes

0:22:00 > 0:22:03from the 771 Squadron to put on her flying air suit.

0:22:03 > 0:22:05They just dropped me out of the helicopter.

0:22:05 > 0:22:08I owe the guys a massive thank you for this,

0:22:08 > 0:22:10so thank you to 771 Squadron and thank you to the Navy

0:22:10 > 0:22:12for being so kind to Blue Peter over the years.

0:22:12 > 0:22:14Now, from one scary moment to another.

0:22:14 > 0:22:16We were set a challenge recently to try to find out

0:22:16 > 0:22:18about the science behind being frightened.

0:22:18 > 0:22:20So what better location to choose

0:22:20 > 0:22:22than a scary castle, supposed to be haunted, as well?

0:22:22 > 0:22:25We had only been there a few minutes when we were already getting scared.

0:22:25 > 0:22:27Look at this.

0:22:27 > 0:22:31Before Peter takes us round the castle, we put on heart monitors.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34A normal heart rate is around 60-90 beats per minute

0:22:34 > 0:22:37depending on your fitness and age.

0:22:37 > 0:22:41When you're scared, your heart rate rises, so, these monitors

0:22:41 > 0:22:44would give an accurate reading as to how spooked we really were.

0:22:46 > 0:22:49Muncaster is full of portraits and scientists believe

0:22:49 > 0:22:53this is what gives visitors the feeling that they're being watched.

0:22:53 > 0:22:56HEARTBEATS SPEED UP

0:22:56 > 0:22:57BOTH SCREAM

0:22:59 > 0:23:00HELEN LAUGHS

0:23:00 > 0:23:03- Good evening.- Oh!

0:23:03 > 0:23:04Seriously, dude!

0:23:04 > 0:23:06And that was just the start of it.

0:23:06 > 0:23:09Little did I know that this one had lined up

0:23:09 > 0:23:12a series of pranks for me to walk right into.

0:23:12 > 0:23:13We're staying in a haunted castle,

0:23:13 > 0:23:15of course I'm going to play practical jokes on you.

0:23:15 > 0:23:17We'll join the story now

0:23:17 > 0:23:20where I just placed a melon above a trapdoor in a fireplace.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22All I've got to do is get Helen over to the fireplace

0:23:22 > 0:23:25and then press the button to release it - and make her jump

0:23:25 > 0:23:27and do a funny little dance.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30So... VOICE ECHOES SPOOKILY: At number one in our countdown,

0:23:30 > 0:23:33this is what happened when things really went bump in the night.

0:23:37 > 0:23:40"She gave a little laugh and looked away,

0:23:40 > 0:23:41"as if she were aware

0:23:41 > 0:23:44"that, to a stranger, her words might seem to save her."

0:23:44 > 0:23:47I am not even kidding.

0:23:47 > 0:23:50If someone's playing a joke, stop it.

0:23:50 > 0:23:52What you talking about?

0:23:52 > 0:23:55Whatever's blowing air on me is what I'm talking about.

0:23:57 > 0:24:01- Where you getting air from? - In here.- That's a chimney.

0:24:01 > 0:24:04- There's bound to be a draught. - I'm serious.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11HELEN SCREAMS AND LAUGHS HYSTERICALLY

0:24:13 > 0:24:14BARNEY LAUGHS

0:24:14 > 0:24:18- Did you know about that? Did you know?- Yeah, I pressed the button.

0:24:18 > 0:24:21Anyway, back to the story, back to the story.

0:24:21 > 0:24:24'I cannot believe Barney tricked me! I'll never live this down.

0:24:24 > 0:24:26'I need to get him spooked, too.'

0:24:26 > 0:24:33I dare you to go down the stairs to the great hall,

0:24:33 > 0:24:37go back to where we had dinner and go and get something off the table.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40- To the dining room? To get something off the table.- Yeah.

0:24:41 > 0:24:43HEARTBEAT ACCELERATES

0:24:43 > 0:24:46I may sound like I'm being brave here but this is a very dark castle.

0:24:48 > 0:24:53I'm not entirely sure where the dining room is. This way.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00I'm in here now on my own. I did not think this dare through.

0:25:00 > 0:25:02HEARTBEAT QUICKENS

0:25:02 > 0:25:03(See how dark it is?)

0:25:03 > 0:25:05Really dark.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09DOOR HINGES CREAK

0:25:09 > 0:25:11No way, no way!

0:25:11 > 0:25:14HEARTBEAT QUICKENS AGAIN

0:25:14 > 0:25:18Man! Did you see that? A door started to shut on its own.

0:25:19 > 0:25:24OK, fork, knife. What else can I get? What's that?

0:25:26 > 0:25:30A little flower. Girls like flowers, don't they?

0:25:32 > 0:25:33HE EXHALES

0:25:33 > 0:25:35HE GASPS AND EXHALES

0:25:38 > 0:25:41You've got something. What have you got?

0:25:41 > 0:25:44I've got a knife, a fork and a flower. There's the flower.

0:25:44 > 0:25:48And those are if you want to eat something during the night.

0:25:48 > 0:25:49'I passed my dare successfully.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52'I think the time has come to get Helen down that spooky hallway

0:25:52 > 0:25:54'where my second prank awaits.'

0:25:54 > 0:25:57- You know the corridor we went down earlier?- Yeah?

0:25:57 > 0:25:59- You know the guy that scared us? - Yeah?

0:25:59 > 0:26:03Your challenge is to go and get his hat...and bring it back.

0:26:03 > 0:26:06Bear in mind, it is the darkest corridor in the castle. No lights.

0:26:06 > 0:26:08- Pitch black.- OK.- Good luck.

0:26:08 > 0:26:09Here goes.

0:26:09 > 0:26:12(Here we go, here we go, here we go.)

0:26:12 > 0:26:14(OK.)

0:26:19 > 0:26:24(Place is so dark.) Where's the man gone? The man's gone.

0:26:24 > 0:26:28OK, what's moving? Calm down. I don't like it.

0:26:28 > 0:26:31The man's gone, the man's gone.

0:26:31 > 0:26:32He's gone!

0:26:32 > 0:26:38- Barney? The dummy's gone.- What do you mean he's gone?- The dummy's gone.

0:26:38 > 0:26:42It looks like I'm going to have to lead her to the floating head myself.

0:26:42 > 0:26:44It's very big.

0:26:46 > 0:26:48Hang on, what's that?

0:26:48 > 0:26:50Flickering at the end.

0:26:56 > 0:26:57There's something...

0:26:57 > 0:26:59flickering at the end.

0:27:00 > 0:27:01Right up there.

0:27:03 > 0:27:06HELEN GASPS IN TERROR

0:27:07 > 0:27:09BLOODCURDLING GROAN

0:27:10 > 0:27:12With all our focus on the floating head,

0:27:12 > 0:27:15I'd forgotten that the mannequin makes a noise when you get near it.

0:27:15 > 0:27:18That was the first time Barney screamed. He ran away.

0:27:18 > 0:27:21Yeah, OK. In the end, I was scared by my own prank.

0:27:21 > 0:27:22GHOSTLY LAUGHTER

0:27:22 > 0:27:25Your face was absolutely brilliant.

0:27:25 > 0:27:28I wasn't really scared. I was doing it for the telly.

0:27:28 > 0:27:29He screamed like a toddler.

0:27:29 > 0:27:33I genuinely was quite frightened. It's scary when you don't...

0:27:33 > 0:27:34Let's not go there.

0:27:34 > 0:27:37Anyway. I hope you've enjoyed our best moments on Blue Peter.

0:27:37 > 0:27:39We've really enjoyed reliving them and we hope you have, too.

0:27:39 > 0:27:41Fingers crossed there will be many more to come.

0:27:41 > 0:27:43That's it from us. See you next time.

0:27:43 > 0:27:45Have a nice week. Bye-bye.
