:00:08. > :00:11.Radzi, there's something fishy going on in studio today....

:00:12. > :00:16.You better make sure today's guests don't see you,

:00:17. > :00:40.CHEERING APPLAUSE

:00:41. > :00:46.I chat to the creators of Mr Popper's Penguins and try to

:00:47. > :00:55.Nathan Sykes joins us in the studio for an amazing

:00:56. > :01:02.The Blue Peter Book Awards is back - will your favourite book impress

:01:03. > :01:12.Christmas is coming, we are excited. Our second candle is lit on

:01:13. > :01:18.the Advent Crown. They are shining brightly. Dim the lights. Only two

:01:19. > :01:21.shows to go to the Christmas special. It got us thinking.

:01:22. > :01:23.With that in mind we want to hear from you,

:01:24. > :01:26.tell us what you think I should get Radzi and Barney for Christmas.

:01:27. > :01:32.You can help us decide what to get each other for Christmas

:01:33. > :01:35.by heading on to our Blue Peter website, leaving your suggestion

:01:36. > :01:39.and we will read out as many as we can at the end of the show.

:01:40. > :01:43.But first, time for me to find out how man

:01:44. > :01:54.It's time for me to take on these massive towering turbines. Last week

:01:55. > :01:58.you saw my sea survival training. Let's hope I don't need it as I join

:01:59. > :02:07.the specialist engineering team who are going to show me how a wind

:02:08. > :02:14.turbine works. We heading 12 miles out off the coast of Liverpool, it's

:02:15. > :02:17.wet and very windy. The wind farm is approaching, so it's time for me to

:02:18. > :02:22.gear up and prepare for these super-size structures. We've now

:02:23. > :02:27.just entered the actual wind farm and the first thing you notice is

:02:28. > :02:34.just the size of them. They are genuinely enormous. Each turbine is

:02:35. > :02:42.approximately the height of 26 double-decker buses. And I love it!

:02:43. > :02:46.As our boat approaches the turbine, everything starts to get serious.

:02:47. > :02:51.This is by far the most dangerous moment in my whole day. The transfer

:02:52. > :02:57.from the boat to the ladder. I got a bit confused in training. No, the

:02:58. > :03:03.rope. But now it's the real deal, I have to stay high school. Tell you

:03:04. > :03:10.what, it's a touch different to the swimming pool! -- stay ice cool. I

:03:11. > :03:15.have to tread carefully, the runs are slippy with seaweed and the wind

:03:16. > :03:24.is all around me. All I can do is keep climbing, this is one seriously

:03:25. > :03:31.extreme job. And I've made it. I'm now 20 metres up. Can you hear that?

:03:32. > :03:37.Because those are the sounds of blades... Look at the size of them!

:03:38. > :03:41.Look how close they are, you can almost feel the air resistance

:03:42. > :03:44.touching your cheek, it's amazing. In a few seconds I'm going to turn

:03:45. > :03:50.those things off. This day gets better and better. The engineers

:03:51. > :03:55.winch up their equipment and it's time for Paul and me to do a very

:03:56. > :03:59.important job. It's incredibly loud in here. This turbine can generate

:04:00. > :04:06.over 3000 kilowatts. With that amount of extra city we need to turn

:04:07. > :04:14.it off to make sure we are safe. -- amount of electricity. There you go,

:04:15. > :04:23.it stopped. The turbine is safe and there's no turning back now. This is

:04:24. > :04:28.it, 120 metres up. Take me to the top. The shaft of this tower is so

:04:29. > :04:33.massive it has its very own lift. As I had to the top, let's find out how

:04:34. > :04:40.wind energy works. This generator makes electricity by spinning a

:04:41. > :04:43.magnet inside a metal coil. You might have made a small version of

:04:44. > :04:49.this at school, there are many different ways to power a generator,

:04:50. > :04:54.in this case, it's using wind power. I'm now 80 metres up in the neck of

:04:55. > :04:57.the turbine. This is the part that pivots the whole top of the turbine

:04:58. > :05:02.with the blades and everything, it faces the wind in any direction. To

:05:03. > :05:06.generate maximum power, the turbine blades must be facing into the wind,

:05:07. > :05:12.but because the wind direction changes, these turbines need to be

:05:13. > :05:18.able to rotate. The six rotors all turn in the turbine, you can see

:05:19. > :05:22.this moving quite slowly. Automatically this will pick up

:05:23. > :05:26.where the wind is and turn it any which way to find the best

:05:27. > :05:36.direction. Such incredible engineering. It's now time to go

:05:37. > :05:46.even higher into the head of the turbine, I am in the necel. What

:05:47. > :05:53.goes on here. Outside you've got the hub and the blade, this turns the

:05:54. > :05:57.main shaft. It goes into the generator, which produces

:05:58. > :06:01.electricity. It goes from the wind outside which is free. Transforms

:06:02. > :06:09.into everything we need for our homes. Now, a bit of a favour. Is

:06:10. > :06:13.there anyway we could stand on top of the nacelle? D we could certainly

:06:14. > :06:20.stand out the back on the weather deck, but not on top of this. I'll

:06:21. > :06:24.see you on the weather deck. This is the moment I've been waiting for

:06:25. > :06:30.since the start of my training. Time to stand at the top of this 120

:06:31. > :06:33.metre mega structure. Would you take a look at these of you? Britton this

:06:34. > :06:43.view. -- take a look at this view. What an

:06:44. > :06:51.incredible thought. Genuinely flabbergasted, I've learned so much.

:06:52. > :06:56.It's now time to get down. Guys? Help!

:06:57. > :07:09.How epic was that? I'm jealous. Time to welcome our next guest. The team

:07:10. > :07:14.behind Mr Popper's Penguins! Hello, welcome to Blue Peter, it's lovely

:07:15. > :07:16.to have you. There were two Penguins earlier, now just one. What

:07:17. > :07:28.happened? Here we go... Carrera! What an entrance. You let very

:07:29. > :07:38.friendly, please don't peck me. That's nice. In this new family

:07:39. > :07:42.musical you play Mr Popper. He is a painter and decorator who has always

:07:43. > :07:45.dream. Being a polar explorer. One day eight packing crate arrives on

:07:46. > :07:49.his doorstep and the adventures begin. You've created so many

:07:50. > :07:56.puppets, Nick, you've done London opening ceremony for the Olympics,

:07:57. > :08:02.now this, how did you make the Penguins look and feel so realistic?

:08:03. > :08:12.It was a long process, it began by making a prototype of the Penguin

:08:13. > :08:16.with wood and fabric. And I carved a faux head. I want to make them feel

:08:17. > :08:19.as real as possible. We made the final Penguin with a soft rubber

:08:20. > :08:25.beak so it can pack. They are lovely, can I keep one? Toby and

:08:26. > :08:30.Lucy, you work these penguins very well, make it look very easy, how do

:08:31. > :08:34.you do that? The head is controlled with this handle at the back, you

:08:35. > :08:40.have a trigger for the beak. You can make him squawk. A couple at the

:08:41. > :08:46.back for the wings. Its intricate. You make it look easy. It's Blue

:08:47. > :08:53.Peter, we love having a go, can I get involved? Of course, this is

:08:54. > :08:58.Greta. Captain Cook's lady friend. If you want to hold onto the

:08:59. > :09:02.handle... Hold on there. Control the wings like so. Greta wouldn't be

:09:03. > :09:05.complete without her squawk, Lindsey.

:09:06. > :09:17.You are professionals, I'll leave it to you. When can we see it pretty

:09:18. > :09:21.much we're at the Lowry in Salford until the 10th of January and some

:09:22. > :09:24.London dates either side of that. I'm excited and I know you at home

:09:25. > :09:25.will be as well, here's a sneak peek.

:09:26. > :09:51.But looks so lovely, I really like the look of that, can you stay for

:09:52. > :09:55.ever? To see more from these penguins come head to the website,

:09:56. > :09:59.there is an exclusive clip of these lustily jingle Bells. Radzi?

:10:00. > :10:02.Barney's still on his holidays, so I'll say it in his absence.

:10:03. > :10:05.Next, Christmas is getting closer, but if you aren't feeling festive

:10:06. > :10:08.enough yet head online to the CBBC Advent Calendar where you can

:10:09. > :10:22.have a go at Barney's 'Guess the Christmas Song' quiz.

:10:23. > :10:33.He suits the beard. I like him with the big white beard. We are missing

:10:34. > :10:35.him today. Hey, Barney. Let's head to the Badge Wall.

:10:36. > :10:40.I love this one from Elizabeth, aged 10 from Newark of our

:10:41. > :10:44.Blue Peter Advent Crown, it even has both candles lit

:10:45. > :10:50.Full is to bid means not long until the Christmas special. You can see

:10:51. > :10:56.the card we showed you how to make last week. Do you remember last week

:10:57. > :11:00.when me and Greg Foot made a cloud in the studio? Here's a reminder. I

:11:01. > :11:03.loved this, look at that! How cool was that?

:11:04. > :11:09.Well, Ffion, aged 10 from Durham has drawn this brilliant picture of us.

:11:10. > :11:14.Elsa, 10, from Huntingdon has sent in this great drawing show Barney

:11:15. > :11:16.doing his aerial gardening from last week's programme.

:11:17. > :11:35.Thank you to everyone who sent post this week. Some of you might be

:11:36. > :11:40.waiting a while for your badge to come in the post because we've had a

:11:41. > :11:44.record amount of post. Keep your fingers crossed and believe, my

:11:45. > :11:48.friends! It'll come, it'll come in the post. Last week I showed you how

:11:49. > :11:52.to make your very own repeat of Christmas card 2015, a lovely

:11:53. > :11:58.cracker card. We want you to send them in whether you make your own

:11:59. > :12:04.design, but bias on the front, send it to us. Hopefully we'll show it on

:12:05. > :12:08.the Christmas special. We seen how you can make birds for the theatre,

:12:09. > :12:14.Barney has been out and about with the real thing, real wildlife birds.

:12:15. > :12:19.One of my favourite things about being a Blue Peter presenter is that

:12:20. > :12:24.I get to do stuff that I love and call it a job. It's crazy, isn't

:12:25. > :12:32.it? For me that's photography. I've managed to get a film where I take

:12:33. > :12:36.photos, best job in the world! Here at the London wetlands Centre

:12:37. > :12:39.they've got loads of my favourite photography subjects, wildlife,

:12:40. > :12:47.which I happen to know a little bit about. Look, there's a Mullard or a

:12:48. > :12:52.duck to me and you. There is a swan, look at those beautiful feathers. --

:12:53. > :12:57.mallard. No, wait, that's an otter, amazing. To take really good

:12:58. > :13:01.wildlife photographs you need to know what you are looking for...

:13:02. > :13:08.Pardon? What do you mean they are not real? Made of toy bricks cost to

:13:09. > :13:16.mark the otter is? Yeah, that's made of toy bricks. It turns out it's not

:13:17. > :13:20.just an otter that lives here in Lego form, there's a whole host of

:13:21. > :13:23.creatures and Hannah is part of the team that helps bring them here.

:13:24. > :13:28.It's easy to see close up they are not real, but they are beautiful. We

:13:29. > :13:32.decided to make giant brick animals to get closer to nature and learn

:13:33. > :13:36.more about our threatened species and the work the wildfowl and

:13:37. > :13:44.wetlands trust does to help conserve animals. I tried to make a car out

:13:45. > :13:51.of this once, must have taken ages. It took 15,500 bricks to make Lottie

:13:52. > :13:55.and 120 hours. That's a lot of time and bricks. It's a good job they

:13:56. > :14:03.don't have to move them any time soon. Barney? Do you want to take

:14:04. > :14:07.Lottie? We want to take them to Lancashire so children can enjoy

:14:08. > :14:11.them there. We have to move them? It took 120 hours to build, will we

:14:12. > :14:16.break them down and rebuild them? Much can club band that. That would

:14:17. > :14:23.have taken hours! Got I've some quality time booked in with Radzi.

:14:24. > :14:26.In fact, these brick beauties can be moved pretty much in one piece, it's

:14:27. > :14:28.getting to them that is tricky. That is where me and these waders come

:14:29. > :14:35.in. With is where me and these waders come

:14:36. > :14:42.up each animal, we need to be careful. Swan wings, check. That's

:14:43. > :14:46.heavy. Otter on a trailer, check. Duck on a yellow trolley, check. All

:14:47. > :15:02.ready for their motorway migration. So there we have it. The van is all

:15:03. > :15:05.packed, and next time we see our friends, they will be 200 miles

:15:06. > :15:12.further north. And so as if by magic, well actually

:15:13. > :15:17.I drove in a car, I am 200 miles north to make sure everyone has

:15:18. > :15:25.arrived. Oh, no! All that time, all that effort putt oh, wait. It is

:15:26. > :15:29.over there. People shouldn't leave toy bricks lying around. Thankfully,

:15:30. > :15:34.the animals have made it in one piece. And so the flamingo goes in

:15:35. > :15:41.with the flamingos, the Swan with the swans, and the duck goes with

:15:42. > :15:44.the ducks. And they will be joined by a brand-new kingfisher which I

:15:45. > :15:50.get to help finish. And before we know it, all of the animals are safe

:15:51. > :15:53.and sound in their new home. So it is now time for me to crack on with

:15:54. > :15:59.what I have only come here to do, take some photos. I want to get some

:16:00. > :16:03.top tips of how to best capture some of the birds here, and I have heard

:16:04. > :16:10.that the site manager, Tom, is the man to show me how. What are your

:16:11. > :16:13.top tips? Relax for a bit, watch the birds, what they are doing, how they

:16:14. > :16:18.interact, if they are about to take off. How about the actual taking

:16:19. > :16:23.off? You don't need fancy equipment. Some of my best shots were done on

:16:24. > :16:30.my phone camera at dawn as the sun is about to come up. And what about

:16:31. > :16:35.a final tip? Are they better on land, flying? Get really low down to

:16:36. > :16:39.the birds, down to eye level, especially when they are sat on the

:16:40. > :16:44.water. The lower down you are, the focus is better. It makes the

:16:45. > :16:50.picture sing. Good advice, and here are my photos. Inspired by the new

:16:51. > :16:54.toy brick addition, I want to take a photo of an actual kingfisher, and

:16:55. > :17:01.I'm told I have a good chance. Tom, look! I have got the

:17:02. > :17:09.kingfisher! I think that is made out of Rex, Barney. Not again!

:17:10. > :17:12.When Barney tells his dad jokes, I genuinely like them. I don't. We

:17:13. > :17:14.need to cut those down. And if you love taking pictures

:17:15. > :17:17.like Barney, head onto our Blue Peter website were you can

:17:18. > :17:20.watch some of Barney's top tips on Next it's time to kick off the

:17:21. > :17:26.Blue Peter Book Awards 2016! Earlier this year we saw

:17:27. > :17:29.The Silly Book Of Side-Splitting Stuff and The Spy Who Loved School

:17:30. > :17:34.Dinners get crowned 2015 winner. Each year the judging gets

:17:35. > :17:36.harder and harder, and this So we asked some book-loving

:17:37. > :17:54.celebrities to lend us Books, books, books. Funny books,

:17:55. > :17:58.sad ducks, clever books, thrilling books. There are so many to read,

:17:59. > :18:04.but how can you choose which ones are the best? Our judges are

:18:05. > :18:10.deliverable Central library to pick this year's Blue Peter book awards

:18:11. > :18:14.2016 finalists. Working their way through 40 books, a job is to choose

:18:15. > :18:22.the top three storybooks and the top three fact books. Pamela, last

:18:23. > :18:28.year's winner of the Blue Peter book awards Best storybook. Jim runs

:18:29. > :18:33.Premier League Reading stars which turns football fans into book fans.

:18:34. > :18:41.Top television presenter Angellica Bell loves reading books with her

:18:42. > :18:47.children. Blue Peter editor Euan will be making sure it all runs

:18:48. > :18:55.smoothly. Let the judging begin! I started off

:18:56. > :18:59.saying no to this one, and then I moved around to it. She learns to

:19:00. > :19:05.walk again, but in this one, she doesn't. We all have our own mind

:19:06. > :19:07.and we know what we do and don't like, but I think we're going to

:19:08. > :19:14.compromise and listen to each other, and I think we will get the best

:19:15. > :19:16.three of each category. After a lengthy discussion, we can reveal

:19:17. > :19:27.our top three fact books. What week in insects does the

:19:28. > :19:30.average person accidentally swallow any year? How many days can an

:19:31. > :19:34.albatross keep flying without flapping its wings? If you need the

:19:35. > :19:36.answers to questions like these, the epic book of a thickness is the book

:19:37. > :19:48.for you. Most books have words, but he Silly

:19:49. > :19:50.Bulk Of Weird And Wacky Words is all about freaky phrases, tongue

:19:51. > :20:13.twisters, rhymes and so on. From excellent experiments to

:20:14. > :20:16.optical illusions. A Random Book Of Trivia stuffs you full with quizzes

:20:17. > :20:21.about incredible inventions, chemicals and volcanoes.

:20:22. > :20:31.And these are the top three storybooks. The Nowhere In For by

:20:32. > :20:37.Ross MacLean C moves from place to place and through time. Yet no one

:20:38. > :20:40.who has been inside can remember going there. But this all changes

:20:41. > :20:45.when a boy called Daniel stumbles through the doors and meets the

:20:46. > :20:51.mysterious shopkeeper Lucien. He returns the next day and begins a

:20:52. > :21:04.compelling adventure. Beckett is all at sea, his dad runs

:21:05. > :21:09.away with him and his brother. In The Boy Who Sailed The Ocean In An

:21:10. > :21:13.Armchair, they work out what has happened between all the grown-ups

:21:14. > :21:17.and meet brand-new neighbours. The Rooney is ready for anything.

:21:18. > :21:21.His favourite motto is don't be scared, be prepared. But he is not

:21:22. > :21:27.ready for the day when he suddenly turns green. Is the ill or is he a

:21:28. > :21:32.superhero? All he needs to do is sneak out of the hospital to

:21:33. > :21:44.discover what his special power is. He is Via Standing Broccoli Boy.

:21:45. > :21:52.Some good books there. You will have to wait until 2016, world book day,

:21:53. > :21:55.to find the winner. And now it is time for the music.

:21:56. > :21:58.He's scored ten Top Ten hits during his time in The Wanted,

:21:59. > :22:01.and now he's taking the charts by storm as a solo artist, going

:22:02. > :22:04.straight in to the singles chart last week as the highest new entry.

:22:05. > :22:06.Please welcome to Blue Peter Nathan Sykes!

:22:07. > :22:15.CHEERING Nathan, welcome.

:22:16. > :22:25.I can't wait to see your performance of your brand-new single Over And

:22:26. > :22:30.Over Again. I have just released the video for the song, which I am very

:22:31. > :22:34.excited about, and I am working on my new album which is coming out

:22:35. > :22:45.next year. And what is coming next for you? Touring with Little Mix.

:22:46. > :22:50.And Christmas? I spend it with my family, watch movies with my dog. It

:22:51. > :22:56.is great. Just with your dog? Nobody else is allowed. Nathan, thank you

:22:57. > :23:02.for coming on the show, and I can't wait to hear your song. Jump onto

:23:03. > :23:07.the Blue Peter website to see more of our interview with him.

:23:08. > :23:10.Earlier on today, we asked you send in your suggestions to what we

:23:11. > :23:13.should get each other for Christmas, and loads of you have been in touch!

:23:14. > :23:14.Thanks so much for all your comments.

:23:15. > :23:20.Amber says Radzi should get DVDs of all the BBC people doing the happy

:23:21. > :23:27.dance. And Shelley apparently needs a nice new bed to hibernating.

:23:28. > :23:33.Mustard thinks Lindsay and Barney should get the James Bond car. Radzi

:23:34. > :23:48.should get sweets because he is sweet, and Eddie should get an alarm

:23:49. > :23:54.clock. Cornelia and says matching onesies for all the presenters!

:23:55. > :23:58.Thank you so much for all your comments.

:23:59. > :24:01.That's it for today, but don't miss next week's show, because Barney is

:24:02. > :24:03.catching up with our friend, British astronaut Tim Peake,

:24:04. > :24:07.We're revealing the shortlist for the Young Sports Personality

:24:08. > :24:11.And I'll be showing you how to make this Christmas tree that's full
