:00:15. > :00:17.Coming up today, I go behind the scenes of Disney's latest film,

:00:17. > :00:22.Frankenweenie, and uncover the secrets of how characters are

:00:22. > :00:32.brought to life. We are getting ready for her win with some

:00:32. > :00:49.

:00:49. > :00:56.Brystone goodies. And we launched They are excited! For good reason.

:00:56. > :01:02.Welcome to Blue Peter. There's a buzz about the studio today. You

:01:02. > :01:06.can probably hear it. Today we are launching this year's Blue Peter

:01:06. > :01:11.Appeal, but we are not going to tell you what it involves just yet.

:01:12. > :01:18.First I want to talk about these. This is a botkin sent in by Archie,

:01:18. > :01:23.who is nine and from Hampshire. It was also sent in by Alfie. Take a

:01:23. > :01:28.look at this picture, sent in by Liam. He says he cut the bottle,

:01:28. > :01:34.but in the plastic bag, as per the instructions, but he didn't have a

:01:34. > :01:42.close stick so he shone a torch from behind. We do like it. We also

:01:42. > :01:48.had a photograph from Flora. She created two botkins. Elizabeth and

:01:48. > :01:53.Christopher have gone one step further. Fees are recycled monsters.

:01:54. > :01:58.-- of these are. If you missed it and you want to have a go, the

:01:58. > :02:01.instructions are on the Blue Peter website. Now that we have the

:02:01. > :02:05.decorations sorted, but you are still wanting to freak out your

:02:05. > :02:12.friends, let me show you something that is really gruesome. Look at

:02:12. > :02:16.these. If you've been watching the Great British Bake-Off, you will

:02:16. > :02:22.know there's more to making a cake than sticking a few ingredients in

:02:22. > :02:27.a tin. You can be so creative. If you take a look down the front, you

:02:27. > :02:36.will see some severed toes. Fees are really a double, they are

:02:36. > :02:41.biscuits. -- Visa are. They are really nice. Even though it has got

:02:41. > :02:46.a big corner on it and there's a bone sticking out. Why not try a

:02:46. > :02:51.severed ear instead? It is quite gross. Blood around the side. But

:02:51. > :02:57.that one has got Piers things. This is part of Hallowe'en. I will

:02:57. > :03:02.introduce you to the latest -- Lady Harrer has made them, Natasha. You

:03:02. > :03:06.will show us how to make these eyeballs. Let's talk about the toes.

:03:07. > :03:12.Where did the idea come from? working on an event at the

:03:12. > :03:17.pathology museum in London. Everything has to be anatomically

:03:17. > :03:22.correct or based on pathology and diseases. A lot of people have done

:03:22. > :03:27.fingers and I thought, toes. not? You will show us how to make

:03:27. > :03:32.these eyeballs. What ingredients will we need? Peanut butter third,

:03:32. > :03:37.but there, icing sugar. We will add some popping candy as well and

:03:37. > :03:41.decorated it with fondant and food colouring. And lemon curd. If you

:03:41. > :03:50.would like to know the exact amounts, go to the website. Let's

:03:50. > :03:58.get messy. We bung everything into a bowl. I am good at bunging. There

:03:58. > :04:03.is the peanut butter are going in. That is a thick! I hope fingers are

:04:03. > :04:08.going in his soon. Stir it around until it becomes a bit like

:04:08. > :04:11.breadcrumbs and then you can get your fingers in. It is like making

:04:11. > :04:17.blow because the icing sugar is working like flower in a Yorkshire

:04:18. > :04:21.pudding mix. It is nice and simple, just three ingredients to make the

:04:21. > :04:27.just three ingredients to make the base. We've got some already made.

:04:27. > :04:32.Once you've mixed it properly, you end up with this. That has cut the

:04:32. > :04:39.popping candy in as well. Why has the popping candy got chocolate on

:04:39. > :04:43.it? If you don't have chocolate, it will pop in the air and also, once

:04:43. > :04:48.it's in the eyeballs, it will pop. You wanted to pop when you bite

:04:48. > :04:53.into it. Yes, you need for a surprise. Mash it together until

:04:53. > :04:58.you have a nice eyeball shape. comes next? Then we get some

:04:58. > :05:07.fondant. A bit like icing. A Yes. You need to put those in the fridge

:05:07. > :05:13.for about half an hour. Here is some we had earlier. Then you very

:05:13. > :05:20.gently fold your fondant around the peanut butter. And then Squidgygate

:05:20. > :05:28.together. That will be the base. -- at squeegee it together. Then you

:05:28. > :05:34.get a cocktail stick. You want to make a circle that will be the iris.

:05:34. > :05:41.The iris is the bit that has the pupil in it. I am concentrating.

:05:42. > :05:48.the end we will get some food colouring from a supermarket. We

:05:48. > :05:58.will start with the pupil. That is gross! I will go for green because

:05:58. > :05:59.

:05:59. > :06:05.I am going to make an incredible hulk Bible. -- eyeball. By you can

:06:05. > :06:08.use liquid but this will come out clearer. If you wet your paintbrush,

:06:08. > :06:14.and makes a little marks come up that will give you more of the

:06:14. > :06:22.shape of the iris. They have bits of light. That makes it more

:06:22. > :06:28.interesting. A different brush for the pupil. Yes. Leaving a little

:06:28. > :06:34.bit of white. To make it shiny. Then you can paint a little bit of

:06:34. > :06:38.black around the Iris as well. Because these are gruesome,

:06:38. > :06:43.diseased eyes, we will paint a little bit of red around the

:06:43. > :06:48.outside of the iris. You can use that same colour to do the veins

:06:48. > :06:52.around the outside of the eye as well. There's a technique to it as

:06:52. > :07:02.well because you work from the outside in. With our eyes, the

:07:02. > :07:10.veins don't come from the irises, they come from behind the Bible.

:07:10. > :07:16.The last gruesome bit is lemon curd. Co the infection. Around the eye

:07:16. > :07:20.like that. That is amazing. Thank you so much for coming in and

:07:20. > :07:26.showing us your eyeballs. More details on the website but the

:07:26. > :07:29.proof is in the pudding. Let's see if Helen would like to try one.

:07:30. > :07:36.come Lorraine Kelly and hell the Willerby get fancy cakes and I get

:07:36. > :07:46.an eyeball? -- Hollywood before stop eye candy. I like the one with

:07:46. > :07:51.conjunctivitis. Somebody said they looked like my eyes! It is an

:07:51. > :07:55.acquired taste! I'm glad you took a big bite! I will get told off for

:07:55. > :07:59.talking with my mouth full. I will finish that later. Great for

:07:59. > :08:06.Hallowe'en. Can we get a close-up of Helen's teeth? They have gone

:08:06. > :08:12.blue. I will eat it later. Last week, it sticks in the back of your

:08:12. > :08:17.throat! Last week, you will have seen the fabulous James Milner

:08:17. > :08:24.creating these beautiful pictures using just a Biro. No pencils, no

:08:24. > :08:31.paint brushes, exclusively by road. A lot of you have been getting in

:08:31. > :08:37.touch because you've had a go at it. Melissa cent in this drawing of a

:08:37. > :08:46.mermaid, Fairy. -- she sent in. She has used different colours to give

:08:46. > :08:52.her flame-red hair. De veena has created this flower. Kelai is or

:08:52. > :08:58.has created an owl. That must have taken pages. -- Alarzar. It is like

:08:58. > :09:06.it is looking right at us. And is drawing of a street. She has got

:09:06. > :09:13.cars. A great depth of field. Great work. Always good to meet people

:09:13. > :09:18.who are inspirational as guests. One inspirational guy is Tim Burton,

:09:18. > :09:22.his movie Frankenweenie is out at the cinemas. It is an animation in

:09:22. > :09:26.3D. It is incredible and I went behind the scenes and found out how

:09:26. > :09:34.they brought the characters to life. For income weeny is the latest

:09:34. > :09:37.Disney movie from Tim Burton. -- Frankenweenie. This is entirely

:09:37. > :09:42.puppets. How different is it working with puppets rather than

:09:42. > :09:47.humans? I have come to meet a guy called her Andy who is a parody in

:09:47. > :09:52.hospital. The movie is about the friendship between 10-year-old

:09:52. > :09:57.Victor and his beloved bull terrier, sparky. Victor uses science to

:09:57. > :10:03.bring his best friend back to live. The dog is a live! And Victor

:10:03. > :10:07.brought an animal back to life. I can fix it. The entire movie is in

:10:07. > :10:12.black-and-white and before the puppets are made, a storyboard is

:10:12. > :10:17.created with each scene being drawn by hand. You look surprisingly well

:10:17. > :10:22.for somebody in hospital. Are you OK? Thank you. It is a puppet

:10:22. > :10:29.hospital. You are more of a doctor than a patient. You could say that.

:10:29. > :10:33.I was the head of puppets. These are the puppets. It is like

:10:33. > :10:38.anything else that requires a lot of movement, it tends to wear out.

:10:38. > :10:45.That is why you have this set up because these guys break. They do

:10:45. > :10:50.wear out. We have a team of people that we live a deal with problems

:10:50. > :10:58.or little tears, a hair out of place, dirty costumes, missing

:10:58. > :11:02.eyelids, missing teeth. We will keep making parts. Hopefully we

:11:02. > :11:09.will get you to repair this. At you will trust me with that? How much

:11:09. > :11:16.of these models? That one was 58,000. 58,000? Better do a good

:11:16. > :11:26.job! A little bit of silicone. is the liquid version of what he is

:11:26. > :11:34.made out of. Yes. It will turn hard. A chemical process to change that

:11:34. > :11:43.liquid. You've got it. How do I do this? On both sides. My hands are

:11:43. > :11:53.shaking a little. You don't need that much. At no. But one end on

:11:53. > :11:59.

:11:59. > :12:08.and rat that around. Nice and You get bandages and everything.

:12:08. > :12:11.You are live! -- Yu-Na Allied. is all very well having your script

:12:11. > :12:16.and your storyboard and the puppets, but you still have to bring them to

:12:16. > :12:20.life and that is where Mark comes in. Your job is to bring these

:12:20. > :12:30.characters to life by giving them personalities and emotions. How do

:12:30. > :12:36.you start with Victor? We have some special tools we use. One of them

:12:37. > :12:42.is a little screwdriver. Victor has got some little holes, one of them

:12:42. > :12:48.on top of his head. What is the screwdriver connected to? Inside,

:12:48. > :12:58.we have a series of cogs and pleased that will open his mouth. -

:12:58. > :13:00.

:13:00. > :13:09.We have his mouth opening up. We can go in and right inside here, to

:13:10. > :13:16.end this. -- turned this. The corner of his mouth starts to move.

:13:16. > :13:23.We can move his eyebrows. We can twist them around to make him more

:13:23. > :13:28.expressive. Now he is looking a little bit more surprised.

:13:28. > :13:32.didn't expect to get this. It is just brilliant, what a great job.

:13:32. > :13:37.It makes you appreciate it when you watch one of these movies how much

:13:37. > :13:40.work is done behind the scenes. Every time you smile, it takes you

:13:40. > :13:49.a split second. Whenever Victor's miles, it takes a screwdriver in

:13:49. > :13:52.his ear! I need your help. I asked first. I've met the incredible and

:13:52. > :13:56.state-of-the-art puppets used in the movie, but now it's time to

:13:56. > :14:00.meet the man himself. The guy behind Frankenweenie, one of the

:14:00. > :14:04.biggest film makers in Hollywood, Tim Burton. And I've got a little

:14:04. > :14:10.surprise for him. Thank you for giving us some of your time. Nice

:14:10. > :14:14.to be here. Did it start for you as a child? At yes, it started with my

:14:14. > :14:23.real relationship as a boy with my dog. It is like your first love

:14:23. > :14:29.affair. It is so pure and unconditional. Can we talk about

:14:29. > :14:32.why it is in black and white? love old monster movies and to me

:14:32. > :14:37.it was part of the emotion of the films. It is something about the

:14:37. > :14:41.way those films were lit. That and the opportunity to do a black and

:14:41. > :14:46.white and 3D, which has never been done before. On behalf of the

:14:46. > :14:50.viewers, we think what you've done over the past 30 years to inspire

:14:50. > :14:56.children and adults alike is incredible. We would like to give

:14:56. > :15:02.you our highest accolade. The Blue Peter Gold badge. I can't believe

:15:02. > :15:12.it! I don't get many awards, thank you very much, that is incredible.

:15:12. > :15:14.

:15:14. > :15:19.Thank you and I thank everybody for The guy is a Hollywood legend.

:15:19. > :15:24.There he is getting excited about the Blue Peter badge.

:15:24. > :15:32.He was so excited to have the gold badge, he wore it at the premier of

:15:32. > :15:37.the movie on the red carpet. It is nice to see somebody so famous so

:15:37. > :15:41.humble. Congratulations. You had a lovely day, didn't you? A day out

:15:41. > :15:44.for me. It is time to launch this year's Blue Peter Appeal. We are

:15:44. > :15:48.delighted to say we are supporting Children In Need. This is one of

:15:48. > :15:58.the reasons why we hope you'll get behind this appeal.

:15:58. > :15:58.

:15:58. > :16:03.This is Yasmin. She is 11 and has Niemann Pick Type C disease. It is

:16:03. > :16:07.very rare. Only 50 children in the UK have it. Doctors found out she

:16:07. > :16:12.had it when she was seven. It has been getting worse. Music has

:16:12. > :16:22.become a big part of her life. She and her younger sister enjoy it

:16:22. > :16:26.

:16:26. > :16:30.together. It is here in Sunbeams that they get to express themselves

:16:30. > :16:35.through music. A lot of the children here find it very

:16:35. > :16:38.difficult to express themselves. Annie believes the therapy helps to

:16:38. > :16:43.bring out their personality. Over the years then, have you seen

:16:43. > :16:46.children grow up with this and change because of it? We have.

:16:46. > :16:51.Their parents say so. Their families say so, but the children

:16:51. > :16:58.do. I believe there is music in everybody. Does this help the

:16:58. > :17:02.families then? Yasmine has come with her sister and mum and dad.

:17:02. > :17:06.Annabelle seems to be enjoying this. They come in here and they are safe

:17:06. > :17:11.They come in here and they are safe and happy. We have fun. Children

:17:11. > :17:21.and parents are having a good time. I think I have made a new friend.

:17:21. > :17:22.

:17:22. > :17:27.Are you enjoying Sun Beams? I think from that smile... Am I on dinner

:17:27. > :17:32.duty? Well, I think these guys are happy

:17:32. > :17:35.we're singing, so back to the music. It is a welcome escape. This

:17:35. > :17:41.disease is tough on the whole family.

:17:41. > :17:46.At seven she was just a normal childlike Annabelle, but then she

:17:46. > :17:50.started to lose all her skills and everything. Bit by bit, she has

:17:50. > :17:56.been measured up for a wheelchair now. We thought her voice had gone,

:17:56. > :18:01.probably about two years ago. She did say to me, "What is happening

:18:01. > :18:06.to me?" it is like your heart has been sliced. Your little girl, who

:18:06. > :18:13.was happy and cheerful, bits of her have gone. It does not feel like

:18:13. > :18:18.much is left really. Is she different here? She responds to

:18:18. > :18:21.music. We hear her voice again. For me it is a voice I miss. It is

:18:21. > :18:26.important to remember that her condition is extremely rare. This

:18:26. > :18:36.family is going through a difficult time. That is why places like Sun

:18:36. > :18:45.

:18:45. > :18:49.Sun Beams is the best. Thank you Children In Need.

:18:49. > :18:53.Well done. Good work! Thank you.

:18:53. > :18:59.I thought this sounded like a really nice project to visit, but

:18:59. > :19:03.it is so much more than that. Yasmine is clearly frustrated by

:19:03. > :19:06.what is happening to her. In there she is smiling, able to express

:19:06. > :19:10.herself and her family are smiling as well. If you get behind this

:19:10. > :19:14.appeal, you will be able to help Children In Need on projects like

:19:14. > :19:19.this. Thank you so much to Sun Beams for

:19:19. > :19:26.making me so welcome. An amazing place. You walk into that room and

:19:26. > :19:36.everyone in there has boxed off whatever life has thrown at them

:19:36. > :19:36.

:19:36. > :19:46.OK, drum roll, please. For the Blue Peter Appeal we are asking you to...

:19:46. > :19:53.Go Pyjamas! That is right. We want you to be

:19:53. > :19:57.sponsored to wear your pyjamas. Go to school, go running, out on your

:19:57. > :20:02.bike. Have a pyjama party. One Direction were supposed to be here

:20:02. > :20:06.today, sadly they could not make it. They have left us a message. We are

:20:06. > :20:10.One Direction. Sorry we could not be with you today. We were told

:20:10. > :20:15.about the Blue Peter Appeal and we want you to Go Pyjamas. You could

:20:15. > :20:19.get sponsored to go to Scouts or Guides in your pyjamas. You could

:20:19. > :20:24.play football or rugby in them. you want to wear yours in public

:20:24. > :20:33.and not get into trouble for it, you can. For a good cause -

:20:33. > :20:41.Children In Need - get involved. Pyjamas! We want to show you how to

:20:41. > :20:51.get involved. We have invited some of our friends into the studio.

:20:51. > :20:56.What is Lucy doing? Can you do another one? It was so quick we

:20:56. > :21:05.nearly missed it. There she goes. Right, you take to the floor and do

:21:06. > :21:14.your thing. You guys are from the Trafford Rhythmic Gymnastics. How

:21:14. > :21:22.easy is it to do it in your pyjamas? It will be OK. How fun

:21:22. > :21:26.would it be to turn up in pyjamas one week? Quite fun. We agreed you

:21:26. > :21:33.would keep an eye on Barney and check out his moves. Can he pull

:21:33. > :21:39.off some of these moves? Yeah. us your splits. Good luck with

:21:39. > :21:43.that! Let's talk football instead. Do what you would do at the weekend,

:21:43. > :21:49.this time wear your pyjamas and get sponsored for Children In Need.

:21:49. > :21:55.That is what Go Pyjamas is about. Let's say you will do some keepy-

:21:55. > :21:59.uppys - how many would you do? What would you do? I don't know. It

:22:00. > :22:05.is a good cause. It is for Children In Need. That is the main thing.

:22:06. > :22:14.does not matter if you do keepy- uppys, do penalty shootouts - that

:22:14. > :22:17.is the point of Go Pyjamas. These guys are a taekwondo team from the

:22:17. > :22:23.East Manchester Academy. What would your team-mates say if you turned

:22:23. > :22:30.up in your PJs? They would think it is funny. It would be really fun to

:22:30. > :22:37.go in your pyjamas outside. What do you normally wear to training?

:22:37. > :22:42.Would it be difficult? It is the same as wearing pyjamas - you would

:22:42. > :22:46.be wearing long trousers and a top. Over here to the plunger, because

:22:46. > :22:52.everything you need to know about this appeal is on the Blue Peter

:22:52. > :22:59.website. Once we push this down the website will go live. A big

:22:59. > :23:06.countdown from three. Three, two, one!

:23:06. > :23:11.There you have it - the website is now live. Get on and see how you

:23:11. > :23:21.can raise money by Go Pyjamas. You can go on the website or watch

:23:21. > :23:21.

:23:22. > :23:27.Barney, are you there? I am outside in the car. Come on, we're

:23:27. > :23:31.launching the appeal today. I bet you are making a brew. Chop, chop!

:23:31. > :23:37.This year Blue Peter is asking you to Go Pyjamas for Children In Need.

:23:37. > :23:43.Come on. It is simple. We want you to be sponsored for wearing your

:23:43. > :23:53.pyjamas out and about. You could wear something like this or a

:23:53. > :23:54.

:23:54. > :24:00.dressing gown. Maybe wear your We don't just mean sitting at home

:24:00. > :24:04.- we want you to get out and create events. Other people can be

:24:04. > :24:08.sponsored too. Your event can be as big or little as you would like. We

:24:08. > :24:14.have some ideas. You could talk to your school about having a pyjama

:24:14. > :24:20.day. And that means that all of your

:24:20. > :24:27.school friends and your teachers can get involved and Go Pyjamas too.

:24:27. > :24:34.You could organise a Go Pyjamas fun-run. Your family could wear
