:01:26. > :01:30.This is a live show, so we have got a question for you, tell us about

:01:31. > :01:34.your favourite book on the website. At the end of the show, we will read

:01:35. > :01:40.out as many of your favourite as possible. Can I just say, how

:01:41. > :01:43.festive is the studio looking?! It is looking so Christmassy today, and

:01:44. > :01:47.the reason for that is we are counting down the days to Christmas

:01:48. > :01:54.with the rest of CBBC. Do you know what? 20 days to go! How exciting?!

:01:55. > :01:59.Do not get too excited, Radzi! Never! We will be showing you how to

:02:00. > :02:04.make a CBBC Christmas card, and we will find out what happened when I

:02:05. > :02:08.went to Newcastle to find out how they celebrate Christmas Polish

:02:09. > :02:14.style. We want to say thank you to everyone who sent sonic designs for

:02:15. > :02:20.the Doctor Who competition. The competition is now closed! Yes, and

:02:21. > :02:23.that means you cannot send in any more applications, but we will be

:02:24. > :02:29.revealing the three winners on our Christmas special on the 19th of

:02:30. > :02:34.December at 5:30 right here on CBBC. But for now, some really exciting

:02:35. > :02:38.news, follow us this way. Yes, you may be able to tell what I'm going

:02:39. > :02:42.to talk about next, because of our lovely reading corner in the

:02:43. > :02:47.background. We are going to be revealing the six short listed books

:02:48. > :02:52.in the Blue Peter Book Awards 2014. We have been doing the awards for a

:02:53. > :02:56.lot of years now, and they give you a chance to vote for your favourite

:02:57. > :03:00.books. Barney went to find out what the awards are all about.

:03:01. > :03:05.There's nothing quite like a good book, you can get lost in a whole

:03:06. > :03:10.other world, and that is why... Sorry, I know you are excited to

:03:11. > :03:15.read your book. That is why this year the Blue Peter Book Awards...

:03:16. > :03:21.No, sorry, I have got one more line then you can read. Are you ready?

:03:22. > :03:27.That is why this year... Oh, come on! As I was saying, there is

:03:28. > :03:31.nothing like a good book, and this year the Blue Peter Book Awards

:03:32. > :03:35.return once again. From a line-up of 40 brilliant books, we are on the

:03:36. > :03:38.hand to find the best story and the best book with facts, and to do that

:03:39. > :03:45.we have enlisted a panel of genius judges. Marcus Sedgwick is already a

:03:46. > :03:52.Blue Peter book award know it all, he won a book award in 2011. I am a

:03:53. > :03:56.judge for the awards, and we are looking for a book that is a little

:03:57. > :04:00.bit better than all the others. Kirsten Grant is the director of

:04:01. > :04:05.World Book Day and has worked in children's literature for 17 years.

:04:06. > :04:08.I am looking for a book where I am going to learn something and where

:04:09. > :04:14.the facts are going to be really well organised and really clear. You

:04:15. > :04:21.will find Katie Thistelton in the CBBC of its most days, but she is

:04:22. > :04:25.also the host of the CBBC Book Club and a self-confessed bookworm. I am

:04:26. > :04:28.looking for a book that you cannot put down, which you want to tell

:04:29. > :04:34.your friends and family about, and which makes you laugh and cry. And

:04:35. > :04:40.our very own UN, the big boss of Blue Peter. He is not voting, he is

:04:41. > :04:44.chairing the voting, making sure everything runs smoothly. This gives

:04:45. > :04:47.us a chance to celebrate the books you have been reading and hopefully

:04:48. > :04:52.introduce you to some new books you might not have read yet. The judges

:04:53. > :04:54.have already read each book, and now they are bashing their heads

:04:55. > :04:58.together to come up with a short list of just six, the three best

:04:59. > :05:03.stories and the three best books with facts, easier said than done!

:05:04. > :05:10.And after hours of deliberation... They have done it! These are the

:05:11. > :05:15.final six, is everyone happy? Very happy, it is a good selection. So

:05:16. > :05:19.there you have it, the book awards short list, around 200 from ten

:05:20. > :05:24.schools will be reading the books and voting for your favourites. Make

:05:25. > :05:30.sure you're watching in the New Year to find out who has been picked.

:05:31. > :05:36.So let's find out a bit more about them, the nominees for best book

:05:37. > :05:44.with facts are Weird World Of Wonders: World War II by Tony

:05:45. > :05:49.Robinson. Marvellous Maths by Jonathon Litton and Thomas Flintham.

:05:50. > :05:55.And The World In Infographics: Animal Kingdom by Jon Richards and

:05:56. > :06:01.Ed Simkins. Let's find out a little bit more about them.

:06:02. > :06:08.Weird World Of Wonders sees the curiosity grew Discover the smellier

:06:09. > :06:13.and more disgusting bits of the Second World War. Wheelbarrows full

:06:14. > :06:17.of money, things that go bang, standing up to bullies, must potato

:06:18. > :06:23.moustaches, it is history, but not as you know it.

:06:24. > :06:31.Did you know the number zero add to be invented? Or that there is an

:06:32. > :06:35.equation to work out the geometry of a doughnut? That is what you get

:06:36. > :06:43.with Marvellous Maths, incredible ideas and interactive bits and bobs,

:06:44. > :06:47.mats made easy. If you are a budding numberSmith, that is some fun. A

:06:48. > :06:53.picture is worth a thousand words, and nowhere is that more true than

:06:54. > :06:57.in The World In Infographics: Animal Kingdom. This is a mash up of icons

:06:58. > :07:01.and pictures, facts and figures to help you make sense of the stats.

:07:02. > :07:05.From boat to birds, mammals and amphibians, each page is bursting

:07:06. > :07:11.with unexpected information about the world of animals, it is wild.

:07:12. > :07:16.That is such an exciting line-up of books, isn't it? Now it is the

:07:17. > :07:25.nominees for best story. We have Oliver And The Seawigs, by Philip

:07:26. > :07:33.Reeve and the Sarah McIntyre. Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell L.

:07:34. > :07:39.And last but by no means least, Whale Boy by Nicola Davies and Joe

:07:40. > :07:45.McLaren. Very exciting times, time to find out more about them.

:07:46. > :07:49.Oliver And The Seawigs is the adventure filled story of

:07:50. > :07:52.ten-year-old Oliver, the son of explorers who met at the top of

:07:53. > :07:57.Mount Everest. When his parents go missing, Oliver set sail across the

:07:58. > :08:02.sea to rescue them. In his quest, he meets a talking albatross, a mermaid

:08:03. > :08:11.with a black eye, a villainous boy and an army of STC monkeys. -- pesky

:08:12. > :08:14.sea monkeys. Sophie is an orphan found in a cello case in the English

:08:15. > :08:18.Channel. When no-one believes her story, she takes matters into our

:08:19. > :08:23.own hands and flees to Paris to search for her mother. The only clue

:08:24. > :08:31.she has is the jest of the jelly maker. Income, we find her on the

:08:32. > :08:34.run from the authorities. -- in Rooftoppers. Will they ever be able

:08:35. > :08:39.to find her mother before it is too late. Michael has never seen a

:08:40. > :08:43.whale, not a real one. Everyone knows they disappeared from the

:08:44. > :08:46.water around the little island of Liberty many years ago. Whale Boy

:08:47. > :08:50.tells the story that unfolds after a terrible storm brings a mysterious

:08:51. > :08:55.stranger to his island home who offers what he has always dream of,

:08:56. > :08:59.his very own boat. All he has to do in return is help the stranger find

:09:00. > :09:03.the Wales and promise to never tell a soul. Michael is about to find

:09:04. > :09:10.that sometimes dreams come with a price.

:09:11. > :09:14.Enormous congratulations to all the nominees. It is a fantastic short

:09:15. > :09:18.list. Now, on the phone we have Jeff Kinney, who was meant to be live in

:09:19. > :09:26.the studio, but because of the storms he has been held up. Jeff,

:09:27. > :09:30.where are you? I am on my way to you in a car, but unfortunately the

:09:31. > :09:34.train was stopped, we were kicked off the train! We wish you were in

:09:35. > :09:38.the studio, but as you are not here, we will ask you a couple of

:09:39. > :09:44.questions. Your book, Diary Of A Wimpy Kid, won best book of the last

:09:45. > :09:49.ten years, how did it feel to win such a special award? I really could

:09:50. > :09:52.not believe it, I did not feel like I could win against Harry Potter,

:09:53. > :09:56.which is one of my favourite books. I said to my kids, at least my books

:09:57. > :10:02.are funnier than Harry Potter, right? And my son was like, no,

:10:03. > :10:07.Harry Potter is funnier! We think you deserved it, and you have a new

:10:08. > :10:10.book out from the series, how do you keep coming up with all of the new

:10:11. > :10:15.ideas and characters all the time? It is really hard. I spent six

:10:16. > :10:20.months just trying to think of ideas, and it takes me a long time.

:10:21. > :10:24.I sit there with a blanket over my head and I fall asleep a lot, and I

:10:25. > :10:28.come up with the ideas I need for a new book. We love the books, and we

:10:29. > :10:35.are going to talk to Katie, but stay on the line, we will need you in a

:10:36. > :10:39.minute! Katie, you are a host of the CBBC Bookclub and a judge on the

:10:40. > :10:44.awards, how tough is it to pick six books? So tough, it is really hard

:10:45. > :10:48.to judge books, especially with storybooks, and we got it down to

:10:49. > :10:52.about ten, and we kept taking them out and putting them in again, but

:10:53. > :10:56.we are really confident we have got brilliant six books, and I would be

:10:57. > :11:00.happy if any of them won, they are all brilliant. It is not just

:11:01. > :11:08.stories, we have fact -based books as well. How do you think they ring

:11:09. > :11:12.the facts together? They do it brilliantly, the maths book, I hated

:11:13. > :11:17.maths when I was younger, I am more of a words girl, but this is full of

:11:18. > :11:20.brilliant tips, but I thought it would have made my life a lot

:11:21. > :11:24.easier! If you do not like maths, it is a good one for you. And the

:11:25. > :11:31.infographics book is brilliant, full of facts that you can member to tell

:11:32. > :11:35.your mates, really fun. And Tony Robinson's World War II book is very

:11:36. > :11:38.funny, with reading for that, but it also helps you to learn about World

:11:39. > :11:42.War II by putting it into your modern day life. He will say that

:11:43. > :11:45.you and your friends are quite similar to how countries formed

:11:46. > :11:49.alliances, and it makes you think, wow, that is why that happened. If

:11:50. > :11:54.we have got time, what do think it is about a good book that you cannot

:11:55. > :11:58.put down? There is nothing like it, you are in your own little world,

:11:59. > :12:02.you can sit and relax and let your imagination run wild. If you don't

:12:03. > :12:07.like reading, you have not found the right book yet. Jeff, same question

:12:08. > :12:13.for you, what makes a great book for you that you cannot put down? For

:12:14. > :12:17.me, it is humour. If it keeps me laughing and turning the Pages, that

:12:18. > :12:23.is the best. Thank you so much, both of you. It is going to be such a

:12:24. > :12:27.difficult one for the 200 children who have to decide the winner, and

:12:28. > :12:32.you will find out the winners of the book award in March next year on

:12:33. > :12:36.World Book Day. Yes, so get online, get to a library, get a copy and get

:12:37. > :12:40.involved. We ask you at the beginning of the show, what is your

:12:41. > :12:47.favourite book and wide? Go to the website and let us know. If having

:12:48. > :12:52.Katie in the studio is not enough, having a man on the side of the

:12:53. > :12:55.motorway is not enough, this may be inspiration for you, some famous

:12:56. > :12:57.faces telling you why they love books and what their favourite books

:12:58. > :13:03.are. My favourite character from a book when I was a kid was from

:13:04. > :13:09.Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, because he is the guy that I wanted to be and

:13:10. > :13:16.still do. One of my favourites was in the Vampire series, and I am

:13:17. > :13:20.partial to a bit of Harry Potter. Reading has had a big influence on

:13:21. > :13:25.me, I get inspired by things I read all the time. We think reading is

:13:26. > :13:30.cool because you can let your imagination run wild. Quite

:13:31. > :13:34.literally! We think reading is cool because you learn a new stuff. And

:13:35. > :13:41.because it is a good time to chill out. And the paper smells good! Why

:13:42. > :13:47.don't you tell the guys at home some of your favourite books? Yes, well,

:13:48. > :14:05.one of mine was the Witches. What is your favourite? Danny The Champion

:14:06. > :14:11.Of The World. Goebel... The first book I was into was about animals,

:14:12. > :14:14.and they really got me into doing what I do today. Some of my

:14:15. > :14:18.favourite things about reading or how you can be transported away to

:14:19. > :14:22.another land, how you can learn interesting words and be very

:14:23. > :14:31.inspired, so I suggest you pick up a book and get reading! You forget how

:14:32. > :14:42.many good books there are. I read a book about blue. I couldn't fit it

:14:43. > :14:45.down! It is Hacker T Dog! I have just come from our office. I have

:14:46. > :14:52.come here to help you ruin this, mate. I'm excited to have you here.

:14:53. > :15:00.Are you excited about Christmas? Yes, I will be sitting down, singing

:15:01. > :15:11.all my favourite songs. This Christmas at CBBC, we want you to

:15:12. > :15:21.keep it CBBC. (. I that. -- oh, grand. I like that. We are putting

:15:22. > :15:53.on Alice in Wonderland. That was really good. I was in that.

:15:54. > :16:01.We are going to be making this car today, with the help of Hacker T

:16:02. > :16:08.Dog, of course. -- this car. All the details on the website. Make sure

:16:09. > :16:13.you head online after the show and check that out. For now we are going

:16:14. > :16:21.to be making this. There is a Blue Peter one you can make. The

:16:22. > :16:27.templates are online. And they are printed out in full, glorious

:16:28. > :16:30.colour. Go to the website and print of two templates. Then stick them

:16:31. > :16:34.together but make sure the one on the back is upside down, so that

:16:35. > :16:41.when you turn the car over, it is still the right way up. That is

:16:42. > :16:47.magic! How have you done that? I went on the website. Now, the first

:16:48. > :16:58.thing to do is to fold it into thirds. Have you done your Christmas

:16:59. > :17:20.shopping? ? I have. I have got some meat paste. I'm going to shape than

:17:21. > :17:29.into the shape of a turkey. Next stage is you can see there are pairs

:17:30. > :17:41.of lines. With these scissors... I bath on a regular basis, Hacker T

:17:42. > :17:50.Dog. Don't we all. This is what helps the card to stay up. Do each

:17:51. > :17:56.pair the same length. You messed it up in rehearsal, didn't you? It was

:17:57. > :18:05.a right dog 's dinner... And I am a dog! Sorry, I just hit you on the

:18:06. > :18:10.nose. Fold your card over. That is going to make the steps Radzi has

:18:11. > :18:20.just cut come out. There you go. How good is that? That is dead good. Can

:18:21. > :18:30.I have it? You can at the end. You need to add the snow panels. It is

:18:31. > :18:44.as though you have rehearsed these jokes. Once you have folded it, you

:18:45. > :18:51.fold along the grey line, like so. All lines are grey to me. I am a

:18:52. > :18:59.dog, I can only see in black and white. After you have done that,

:19:00. > :19:10.underneath... He does know what he is doing. I am going to glue on the

:19:11. > :19:18.part that says, do this part again. Come on, we can afford it. Then you

:19:19. > :19:26.simply glue down here like so. Easy, isn't it? And then once, as Red Sea

:19:27. > :19:40.has done, you are going to explain about the panels. -- Radzi. It

:19:41. > :19:52.hangs. It should look like this. Now the fun part, we get to decorate it.

:19:53. > :19:57.Oh, we can put glitter on it! I am going to put a bit of glue on here.

:19:58. > :20:03.If you send me that, I will be disappointed. There, you have

:20:04. > :20:09.finished your card. You can make an individual, pictures of your family

:20:10. > :20:15.and friends, anything you want. A washing machine if you wanted. That

:20:16. > :20:25.would be strange. When you have got one, take a photo, we would love to

:20:26. > :20:32.hear from you. Thank you for coming in, Hacker. My pleasure. Can I come

:20:33. > :20:37.on every week? I am taller than Barney. How do you celebrate

:20:38. > :20:45.Christmas? Maybe you are getting your presence sorted. Stop it,

:20:46. > :20:49.Hacker! We all celebrate Christmas differently. Earlier in the week I

:20:50. > :20:58.went to Newcastle to find out to celebrate Christmas the traditional

:20:59. > :21:03.Polish way. I have got a bit multilingual today,

:21:04. > :21:06.and there's a special reason. It is a time when lots of people are

:21:07. > :21:11.celebrating Christmas. Considering Polish is the second most spoken

:21:12. > :21:15.language in England and Wales, I thought they would find out how they

:21:16. > :21:19.celebrate. They celebrate on the 24th of December, when nothing is

:21:20. > :21:25.eating until the first star appears in the sky. It is tradition to set

:21:26. > :21:31.an extra place at the table for a none expected guests. Delicacies

:21:32. > :21:37.include creamed herring and beetroot. This school holds we can

:21:38. > :21:43.Polish ( lessons, giving children a chance to hold up with their own

:21:44. > :21:54.country's traditions. -- this school holds weekend Polish lessons. Hello,

:21:55. > :22:02.everyone. What are you doing here? We are making pictures. Christmas

:22:03. > :22:14.pictures? How important is Christmas to you? Very important. We have a

:22:15. > :22:21.kind of wafer. You pass them around, and who goes first? The oldest

:22:22. > :22:29.person. What marks Christmas for you? As soon as we see the first

:22:30. > :22:33.star in the sky. Decorations are also important. You are making a

:22:34. > :22:40.Christmas tree hat off past. It is looking really good. I'm going to

:22:41. > :22:49.make one as well. What food do you like? I hold a Christmas puddings,

:22:50. > :22:57.really. -- I like all the Christmas puddings. I hate mushrooms. But some

:22:58. > :23:04.of the traditional decorations are sweet treat. This looks delicious!

:23:05. > :23:09.We are making cookies for the trees. They are gingerbread. We are going

:23:10. > :23:16.to hang them on the tree. We put them on and make baubles. Yellow

:23:17. > :23:21.micro something over there, Victor... I didn't really eat it!

:23:22. > :23:28.The smell of the gingerbread is making me hungry. Heather, is this

:23:29. > :23:39.what a table would look like at home? The Polish sub but has at

:23:40. > :23:48.least 12 dishes, in order to represent the 12 disciples. -- the

:23:49. > :23:54.Polish subpar. What do you say to each other? You make good wishes for

:23:55. > :24:03.the next year. Good wishes for the next year, however. I am so hungry.

:24:04. > :24:14.Let the tasting begin, and I tried everything. That is really good. It

:24:15. > :24:21.is cold. It is delicious. Let's try some cakes. I adore it. Then came

:24:22. > :24:27.the beetroot soup and dumplings. Not the biggest fan of dumplings. I have

:24:28. > :24:30.had such a brilliant day. I have learned traditions, decorated the

:24:31. > :24:38.tree and even tried a bit of Polish food. Just one thing left to say.

:24:39. > :24:42.Which means Merry Christmas. But to make it a bit more Christmassy, we
