:00:20. > :00:29.and we have got contenders you will not be able to put down in 2013.

:00:29. > :00:32.peek behind the scenes at the CBBC's very own spy school, MI High.

:00:32. > :00:42.A clever new use for your Christmas jumper that will keep you popular

:00:42. > :00:43.

:00:43. > :00:53.with your pets. And find out where I am on top of a wing. I am on top

:00:53. > :01:06.

:01:06. > :01:11.Hello! How are you? Come back, we need you for this bit! Let's not

:01:11. > :01:14.talk about Christmas, it is well and truly finished. But we can talk

:01:14. > :01:21.about the new year and an exciting start and New year's resolutions.

:01:21. > :01:27.Have you got one? I want to keep better control of the dog! He had

:01:27. > :01:31.been sitting here perfectly, now he is playing. I was speaking to him

:01:31. > :01:34.earlier, saying that New year's resolutions are quite important, he

:01:35. > :01:40.says he is going to try to smile more on camera. Show them what you

:01:40. > :01:48.have got! My new year's resolution is to play piano a bit more, I need

:01:48. > :01:53.more practice. We are going to make him a little bit more obedient!

:01:53. > :02:03.you tell us about you and your new year's resolution, we are only 10

:02:03. > :02:04.

:02:04. > :02:08.days into the new year, so you may Do you want to come this way?! The

:02:08. > :02:18.studio is full of boots, because it is a very exciting day for us, we

:02:18. > :02:42.

:02:42. > :02:47.are launching the Blue Peter Book winner, this guy. The Considine

:02:47. > :02:56.KERS By Gareth A Jones! That is how you make an entrance, everyone,

:02:56. > :03:01.perfect! I am delighted to say that he is with us today. Hello, Gareth!

:03:01. > :03:05.Nice to see you. Obviously, we saw you winning the Blue Peter Book

:03:05. > :03:10.Awards, what does it mean to one- all there? It is fantastic to win

:03:10. > :03:14.any awards, but it has been brilliant, really nice to have that

:03:14. > :03:20.on the front of my book, saying I am a Blue Peter Book Award winner.

:03:20. > :03:24.Every time I go to a school, I talk about it and show off the badge.

:03:24. > :03:30.How special is it that it is voted for by children? It is very

:03:30. > :03:34.important. They are my readers, so the fact that they voted for it,

:03:34. > :03:40.and to be honest, they are the most honest readers you can get. Adults

:03:40. > :03:45.will say, it is fine. I get lots of e-mails that I respond to, and lots

:03:45. > :03:51.of them will say, I really enjoyed the book, but I did not like the

:03:51. > :03:59.ending. I get a lot saying they did not like the ending! That must be

:03:59. > :04:06.great, honest feedback. I like what you're doing! Let's talk about the

:04:06. > :04:10.last year, how has it been? It has been a great year. My new book came

:04:10. > :04:13.out, a Victorian ghost story that I mentioned last time. That came out,

:04:13. > :04:19.I have been to lots of schools, up and down the country talking about

:04:19. > :04:23.that and singing about it. I write songs for my book as well, I take

:04:24. > :04:28.my ukulele into schools and get them singing. There is lots of

:04:28. > :04:33.howling, and the new one has lost of ghostly noises. I do a lot of

:04:33. > :04:40.that, and it has been so great, such a Nicaea. I have also had my

:04:40. > :04:46.series of new books coming out. Manger meerkats! All books need de

:04:46. > :04:50.ninjas, that is just a fact. This year there are two awards, best

:04:51. > :04:54.storybook and best book. We are very excited about it, not just

:04:54. > :04:59.because we get to see the judges and the process, but we will get a

:04:59. > :05:04.sneak peek of the shortlist of books. Choosing the books for the

:05:04. > :05:09.shortlist is not an easy process. It involves a lot of reading, a

:05:09. > :05:12.little laughter and a fair bit of friendly arguing. So we had to pick

:05:13. > :05:18.a top team of judges that would be up to the task. Award-winning

:05:18. > :05:24.newspaper columnist Caitlin Moran. There is nothing more exciting than

:05:24. > :05:29.arguing about books that you love for hours and hours. Librarian Jaco.

:05:29. > :05:34.So many book awards are geared at older readers of very young, and

:05:34. > :05:39.having one that aims at the middle felt really important. Cressida

:05:39. > :05:47.Cowell. You tend to read books that you might not have read yourself,

:05:47. > :05:50.so you get a lovely surprise. our very own boss. It is a chance

:05:50. > :05:55.for kids to discover new books you might not have found out about

:05:55. > :05:59.otherwise. Having read 40 books that were put forward, their task

:05:59. > :06:04.is to whittle it down to just six. The top three-storey blocks and the

:06:04. > :06:14.top three factual books. After much deliberation, they have done it, so

:06:14. > :06:16.

:06:16. > :06:20.Hero on a bicycle is the gripping story of a 13-year-old bicycle

:06:20. > :06:25.riding boy and his older sister. Trapped in wartime Florence, they

:06:25. > :06:28.are desperate to find ways to defeat the occupying German forces,

:06:28. > :06:32.but when the Italian resistance give them a chance to help, it puts

:06:32. > :06:36.them and their family in risk of their lives. As soon as you start

:06:36. > :06:40.reading it, you can fiend the Italian sun on your arms, you can

:06:40. > :06:44.smell the lemons, feel the fear. The Nazis have taken over the

:06:44. > :06:50.village. By the time you get to the end, you feel like you have been

:06:50. > :06:56.through the war and won, along with Paolo on his bicycle. Goldfish are

:06:56. > :07:01.the unlikely stories of this book. Goldfish and little Stan, whose

:07:01. > :07:06.fish loving journey starts when he runs away from his Mardan call to

:07:06. > :07:10.join the circus. He is helped along the way by a host of eccentric

:07:10. > :07:18.characters until he discovers a whole new future for himself in a

:07:18. > :07:22.gripping finale. Get it? I loved the main character, Stan, and his

:07:22. > :07:28.Uncle Ernie, who does something terrible with some goldfish. I

:07:28. > :07:32.won't tell you what, but you still kind of feel sorry for him. In our

:07:32. > :07:39.next story book, Tom Gates was not expecting to see this, his sister

:07:39. > :07:46.without her sunglasses on. Scary! Nor did he expect to see his dad in

:07:46. > :07:50.embarrassing blue cycling shorts. His ideas are packed with maps,

:07:50. > :07:54.drawings and doodles as we follow him and his band on the way to the

:07:54. > :07:58.school talent show. Lots of very unusual characters having all kinds

:07:58. > :08:04.of mishaps, and I think it is one that will make people laugh and

:08:04. > :08:08.think at the same time. This scrapbook by Michaela Morgan tells

:08:08. > :08:12.the inspirational True story of the man who became not only Britain's

:08:12. > :08:17.first black professional outfield footballer but also Britain's first

:08:17. > :08:20.black army officer. This vivid book traces his remarkable life from

:08:20. > :08:25.growing up right through to when he was killed just before the end of

:08:25. > :08:30.the First World War. It is a story of amazing triumph, people

:08:30. > :08:34.overcoming prejudice, and then his real sorrow and sadness at the end.

:08:34. > :08:40.Months after reading it, you were still going, I feel like I know

:08:40. > :08:44.that guy now. Did you know that every minute you shed 40,000 flakes

:08:44. > :08:50.of dead skin? Or that the fleas living on your pet can jump up to a

:08:50. > :08:54.third of the meter? This book reveals the gruesome goings-on in

:08:55. > :09:00.your home and comes complete with disgusting experiment to try out,

:09:00. > :09:03.including a sneaky way to trap police just by using honey. These

:09:03. > :09:13.are things that we probably all live within our everyday lives but

:09:13. > :09:15.

:09:15. > :09:19.we are not quite aware of, and it Michael Rosen retells the life-

:09:19. > :09:23.story of the legendary Roald Dahl and gets tips for how to write a

:09:23. > :09:30.great story along the way, like make it funny, keep a notebook, and

:09:30. > :09:33.have some great illustrations. As what Roald Dahl's books, it is

:09:33. > :09:38.illustrated by Quentin Blake. Children will love reading this,

:09:38. > :09:44.because it is all about Roald Dahl and how he wrote, and I think it

:09:44. > :09:50.will give children ideas about how they might write their own stories.

:09:50. > :09:54.When I look at the final six, I just want to read them again. Books,

:09:54. > :09:58.to me, look like doors into other worlds, and I want to go back

:09:59. > :10:03.through every single one and roam around in that world again. If you

:10:03. > :10:08.want to see those animations again, we loved them, go to the Blue Peter

:10:08. > :10:13.website. You can join the message board conversations about those

:10:13. > :10:18.books. Maybe you have got more suggestions for books to read.

:10:18. > :10:22.Gareth, the judges have a difficult task to decide which is the winner.

:10:22. > :10:27.I am glad I am not making the decision at this point, some

:10:27. > :10:31.fantastic books, a wide range from things about the war to one of the

:10:31. > :10:36.world's greatest children's writers, to something about piranhas,

:10:36. > :10:40.fantastic! What makes a good book? You have got different subjects,

:10:40. > :10:45.fact and fiction, but what makes a good book? What would you be

:10:45. > :10:51.looking for? It has got to hold your interest from the very first

:10:51. > :10:55.page to the very last page, that is the basic rule. Well, 200 children

:10:55. > :10:59.have been selected to vote for the winner, and on World Book Day we

:10:59. > :11:04.will tell you who comes out on top, I cannot wait. Have you ever

:11:04. > :11:09.wondered what it takes to keep an aeroplane in tip-top condition?

:11:09. > :11:19.Recently I was let loose in aeroplane engineering school, where

:11:19. > :11:21.

:11:21. > :11:25.I got to grips with the nuts and We see so many aeroplanes criss-

:11:25. > :11:30.crossing our skies at this time of year, but for me travelling by air

:11:30. > :11:35.never loses its excitement. It is brilliant, you just sit back, relax,

:11:35. > :11:38.enjoy the view and let somebody else do the driving. Normally, the

:11:38. > :11:46.excitement is about the destination, but today it is not so much about

:11:46. > :11:51.where we are going but how we get I am going to discover just what it

:11:51. > :11:57.takes to keep an aeroplane like this flying safely every time it

:11:57. > :12:00.takes to the skies. I have come to Exeter, where the airline have a

:12:00. > :12:04.special Academy. Around 100 young people fresh from school are

:12:04. > :12:12.currently being trained as apprentice aircraft engineers. And

:12:12. > :12:16.today they have got a new When a car clocks a set number of

:12:16. > :12:20.miles, it is taken to the garage for a service, and when an

:12:20. > :12:29.aeroplane clock says certain number of hours in the sky, it goes for a

:12:29. > :12:33.Aeroplanes come here from all over Europe when they need a check-up. I

:12:33. > :12:39.cannot wait to get stuck in and see what goes on, but first I need to

:12:39. > :12:46.learn a few basic skills. I am here to be an engineer, I know it is a

:12:46. > :12:50.crash course, but what can you teach me? Instructor Paul and

:12:50. > :12:55.apprentice William talk me through a technique called wirewalking.

:12:55. > :12:59.First, cut off a length of wire. Threading the bolt and twisting the

:12:59. > :13:04.wire makes sure that nothing comes loose while the aeroplane is flying.

:13:04. > :13:14.So you are basically plaiting the wire, that is a girly way of

:13:14. > :13:23.describing it. It should be tight. What is next? Structure, I am going

:13:23. > :13:33.to show you how to mark out a piece of material. That is fun, isn't it?

:13:33. > :13:38.

:13:38. > :13:44.From the academy to the hangar, and engineer Emma is here to keep an

:13:44. > :13:49.eye on me. It is probably a good idea! Now I'm going to be let loose

:13:49. > :13:57.on an actual aeroplane, I'm going to try to lock two bolts. I am

:13:58. > :14:07.going in! I have threaded it, OK. It is a fiddly little job, isn't

:14:08. > :14:12.

:14:12. > :14:17.Those are going nowhere? You had better check it!

:14:17. > :14:22.Time for amateur show me the ropes, literally, we need to be harnessed

:14:22. > :14:28.to the ceiling to check the wings. This is the fuel tank and the fuel

:14:28. > :14:38.is stored inside. Before we put the panels down, do

:14:38. > :14:39.

:14:39. > :14:44.an inspection, which is vital. stinks!

:14:44. > :14:48.This is so cool, to be up here! You do not ever think you will be on

:14:48. > :14:53.top of it. This is the aircraft internals.

:14:54. > :15:03.Different to how you are used to seeing it. It does not look

:15:04. > :15:09.

:15:09. > :15:16.These are real seats? The overhead lockers would be up here. I would

:15:16. > :15:21.be here, I like a window seat. The compartment is here. So you take

:15:21. > :15:27.everything apart to check it? This is not something you would

:15:27. > :15:32.normally see. This is the cargo bay where the backs are kept. In it is

:15:32. > :15:40.not very big, no wonder they are strict on baggage allowance -- it

:15:40. > :15:44.is. How long would it take to get everything Jack? 12 days. -- Cech.

:15:44. > :15:50.Thank you for showing me around, and would like to go back to first

:15:50. > :15:59.class, lead the way! And you for having me and for this

:15:59. > :16:04.morning. It has been a pleasure. -- thank you. We have had the boys

:16:04. > :16:08.finish off what you started this morning. I would like to present

:16:08. > :16:13.this to you as a memento from the days. I shall take this back to the

:16:13. > :16:22.studio, a typical, wetting the boys finish what I started! Bank you

:16:22. > :16:27.very much. -- letting. -- thank you very much. In time comedy will be a

:16:27. > :16:30.good engineers. Don't worry, they double-checked

:16:30. > :16:33.everything I did twice! Now over to Barney. Hang on a

:16:33. > :16:41.minute, isn't that a festive jumper you've got on, Barney? Don't you

:16:41. > :16:43.know, it's well past the season now? You're so last year! Actually,

:16:43. > :16:46.as you might remember, festive jumpers were huge this year. We

:16:46. > :16:51.even made some Christmassy ones when we were in Lapland. But

:16:51. > :16:55.admittedly, they're now a bit past their sell by date. We have a very

:16:55. > :16:58.special guest in the studio today who has got a brilliant idea to

:16:58. > :17:05.turn this jumper from cringe to cute. And she is Totally Rubbish's

:17:05. > :17:15.very own Michelle Ackerley. I couldn't resist! That is the name

:17:15. > :17:21.

:17:21. > :17:24.of your new show. We know you from Deadly Art, but

:17:24. > :17:27.your new show, Totally Rubbish, has just started, hasn't it? So what's

:17:27. > :17:37.that all about? It is about taking old bits and pieces and creating

:17:37. > :17:38.

:17:38. > :17:48.something new. And these are packed beds, how do we make them? -- pets

:17:48. > :17:53.beds. Out will try not to make too much of a mess, stopping at!

:17:53. > :18:03.light it flat with the front facing towards you and at the bottom, you

:18:03. > :18:04.

:18:04. > :18:12.fold it over and you need to get a fix piece of wool and a needle. Do

:18:12. > :18:21.not -- make sure you make a not at the bottom and stitch across.

:18:21. > :18:28.you have made a box at a paper, you fold the sides over. -- out of. Who

:18:28. > :18:38.stitch the answer to the side. you are closing the gaps. You need

:18:38. > :18:39.

:18:39. > :18:49.to meet the waste here. And G full day at around. And used it chip. --

:18:49. > :18:55.

:18:55. > :18:59.you forget round and you stick it up. -- fold it round/. You grab

:18:59. > :19:04.some stuffing and you look around your house for material and

:19:04. > :19:08.anything that is nice and soft to make good padding. Do you cut up

:19:08. > :19:15.clothes you got up Christmas -- do you cut up clothes you got for

:19:15. > :19:22.Christmas? Q that a secret. The more stuff think, the better.

:19:22. > :19:26.has got to be nice and cosy. This is going to be the base. This is

:19:26. > :19:34.easy and you can do it with anywhere and anything and get your

:19:34. > :19:40.family to help you out. It is starting to take shape. When you

:19:40. > :19:47.have a base stopped -- the bass stuff that can make you need a gap

:19:47. > :19:55.because you are going to sew. That is soap this off -- that is so the

:19:55. > :20:00.stuffing does not come out. By up would be messy! -- that would be

:20:00. > :20:10.messy. This is the next stage. have a gap for the rest of the

:20:10. > :20:19.

:20:19. > :20:23.stuff in here. Look at the smile on my face, I am loving it! You will

:20:23. > :20:29.smile more when you see this. We have customised it a bit more, we

:20:29. > :20:34.have cut up some felt and written his name and stuck it on. I am you

:20:34. > :20:44.can be fancy if you want to. can use some stitching like we have

:20:44. > :20:45.

:20:46. > :20:53.here. The proof is in the pudding, as they say. We can only see how

:20:53. > :21:02.successful this bears by asking Barney. He has watched everything!

:21:02. > :21:11.-- how successful this is. What does he think? Straight down! Show

:21:11. > :21:15.how happy you are at! Good boys. Remade other baskets and we will

:21:16. > :21:23.send those to the cats and let you know -- we made. If you want to

:21:23. > :21:29.make a basket, look at the website. And if you do, send us a picture.

:21:29. > :21:35.You know the e-mail address. We love to see what your animals think

:21:35. > :21:43.of these baskets. This little chap is quite happy! Bank queue for

:21:43. > :21:46.rescuing us from Bonnie's jumper! - - Barney's.

:21:46. > :21:49.January might seem like a bit of a boring month, with terrible weather

:21:49. > :21:56.and dark evenings. But one good thing about this time of year is

:21:56. > :22:01.that there is always good TV on. Including the MI High. This is a

:22:01. > :22:05.new series with a new cast and you will have always wanted to be spies

:22:05. > :22:09.if you were like me, and I got a chance to go behind the scenes

:22:09. > :22:14.recently and look at what goes into making this great series.

:22:14. > :22:20.The 6th series of MI High has exploded on to the screens but it

:22:20. > :22:25.has some big changes. I am at a top secret location on

:22:25. > :22:31.the set to do some spying to find out what is happening in the new

:22:32. > :22:40.series, are you coming? I hope to gather my first bit of intelligence

:22:40. > :22:45.from here, I am about to meet the main man, Frankland and.

:22:45. > :22:52.Remaining -- Frank London. Remaining under cover, he leads a

:22:52. > :23:02.team of young spies and fight violence. I will take the famous

:23:02. > :23:07.

:23:07. > :23:12.left down to meet him. -- lift. That is how you make an entrance.

:23:12. > :23:19.We have a new spy base and also new spies, what else can you tell us?

:23:19. > :23:28.The big thing is the new spies. this what I think? More action and

:23:28. > :23:33.more fighting. Whereas he heading next and where

:23:33. > :23:39.was he involved? It is exciting for him because we see something from

:23:39. > :23:49.his past that is traumatic and it starts to have an effect on the

:23:49. > :23:56.whole series and it affects what this spies are doing. -- the spies.

:23:56. > :24:06.And if you need more spies as. will be in touch! I have received

:24:06. > :24:09.

:24:09. > :24:19.other intelligence that the cast of What you can see is part of the

:24:19. > :24:20.

:24:20. > :24:30.scene where one of the new spies How would you describe what your

:24:30. > :24:33.

:24:33. > :24:38.character is like? Diana is efficient. -- Dan. I have watched

:24:38. > :24:42.this guy it jump of bridges and you have already asked -- have already

:24:42. > :24:49.helped an old lady in distress. People ask me how I got into doing
