0:00:17 > 0:00:19- Yeah, we do.- Let's start the show.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:00:36 > 0:00:38Hello, and welcome to live Blue Peter!

0:00:38 > 0:00:41It's fair to say Radzi and I are very, very excited,

0:00:41 > 0:00:44because today is the day that we tell you all about

0:00:44 > 0:00:47our brand-new spy-inspired competition.

0:00:47 > 0:00:48And to do that, we are joined

0:00:48 > 0:00:51by the hero - Anthony Horowitz is in the studio!

0:00:51 > 0:00:52CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:00:52 > 0:00:54Whoa, whoa, whoa, that's all you're getting.

0:00:54 > 0:00:58- We'll be announcing that competition shortly.- Sorry.- In fact, precisely

0:00:58 > 0:01:01in 13 minutes - not a second more, not a second less -

0:01:01 > 0:01:03and that's the graphic to prove it.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06Now, the excitement does not stop there - neither do the gold badges -

0:01:06 > 0:01:09because, as well as that, we are joined by author, illustrator,

0:01:09 > 0:01:12general legend, and current Children's Laureate -

0:01:12 > 0:01:14Chris Riddell is in the studio.

0:01:14 > 0:01:15There he is.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17He is standing next to the new Children's Laureate. Who is it?

0:01:17 > 0:01:19- Guys, can I get an "ooh?" - ALL:- Ooh!

0:01:19 > 0:01:23We don't know. We're going to be finding out later in the show.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26I actually do know, because I was on the panel that helped decide

0:01:26 > 0:01:27that Children's Laureate.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30- You may have seen her - there's your first clue...- Radzi, shh!

0:01:30 > 0:01:31..on Newsround this morning.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34But we'll be giving them a proper Blue Peter entrance a bit later on.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37- But not before...- Aw.- ..we ask you where this lovely lady is.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39Her name's Shelley. Can you spot her?

0:01:39 > 0:01:41Jump on the Fan Club and tell us when you do.

0:01:41 > 0:01:42- She gone.- You just threw her away.

0:01:42 > 0:01:45I did. That wasn't a very good throw. Under the chin and over.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47As you can see, lovely Barney Harwood is not here this week.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49- He is back next week...- Nee-ha.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52..so let's see what happened when he got on a scooter.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56So, chances are, you've probably seen one of these before.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58It's a scooter. Loads of fun, aren't they?

0:01:58 > 0:02:01You can ride to your friend's house. You can ride around town.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04And, when you get really confident on them, you can go quite fast.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07And, then, there are other people who take it one step further.

0:02:09 > 0:02:10Well, quite a lot further.

0:02:12 > 0:02:16Freestyle scooter is taking life on two wheels to the next level,

0:02:16 > 0:02:17using speed and skill to perform

0:02:17 > 0:02:21some frankly unbelievable stunts.

0:02:21 > 0:02:25And, right now, the guy who has performed THE world's best trick

0:02:25 > 0:02:28just so happens to live in Liverpool.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31And I've come to see if I can track him down

0:02:31 > 0:02:33in his natural environment... the skate park.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38Jamie Hall can do things on a scooter

0:02:38 > 0:02:40most of us can only dream of.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44By the age of 15, he is already one of the best in the UK.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47So will he be able to pass on some of those skills to me?

0:02:49 > 0:02:51Jamie, let's talk about how you've got to where you are now.

0:02:51 > 0:02:55So I have been riding for about five or six years now.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59And I just won the world's best trick in Barcelona.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02Such a big achievement. I did double backflip, double tail whip,

0:03:02 > 0:03:03landed it second go.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05OK, I'm new to this. I've got double backflip, I've got.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07Double tail whip - what's that?

0:03:07 > 0:03:10So I did two backflips with that in it.

0:03:10 > 0:03:11I've immediately noticed

0:03:11 > 0:03:13a massive difference between your scooter and mine.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16These scooters are really good for going to school

0:03:16 > 0:03:17and just going outside.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19But for freestyle, in the skate park,

0:03:19 > 0:03:22these are really, really strong. They are made out of steel.

0:03:22 > 0:03:23Now, I really want to give this a go,

0:03:23 > 0:03:25but I feel like I need more safety gear on.

0:03:25 > 0:03:30Yeah. So what I wear is a helmet - a certified helmet. Some bum pads.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33- I've got shin pads so the scooter doesn't hit me in the shins.- Yeah.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35And I have ankle pads as well so it doesn't do the same.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38How about if we just cover me in pillows, and just tape them round?

0:03:38 > 0:03:41- Just put them round.- Just tape them to me. That'd be great. OK

0:03:41 > 0:03:43So, safety gear in place - do you reckon I can do something today?

0:03:43 > 0:03:46You can. I'm feeling... I'm feeling confident.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48Glad YOU are. All right, then, let's do it.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51So, with all the correct gear on,

0:03:51 > 0:03:54Jamie is going to show me how to get the most out of my scooter.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58And we begin with how to set off on a ramp - or dropping in -

0:03:58 > 0:04:01which, I'm told, is harder than it looks.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03Make sure your feet are either side, so it is locked.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07Your most comfortable foot, put it on the deck.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10And whilst it's on, you can put the other one to the side,

0:04:10 > 0:04:12and just drop in like this, slowly.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14And then put it back on.

0:04:14 > 0:04:15As simple as that?

0:04:19 > 0:04:23'I can confirm, it is harder than it looks.'

0:04:26 > 0:04:27'But slowly, I get the hang of it,

0:04:27 > 0:04:30'So Jamie thinks I could try a bigger ramp.

0:04:30 > 0:04:31'What could possibly go wrong?'

0:04:37 > 0:04:38Like that(?)

0:04:38 > 0:04:40'So that is why you need the safety gear.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43'I'm fine, and Jamie shows me where I am going wrong.'

0:04:43 > 0:04:46Just make sure your knees act like a suspension when you are

0:04:46 > 0:04:49dropping in, and that they go down.

0:04:49 > 0:04:50And then, when you are in the middle,

0:04:50 > 0:04:52stand up again so you've got your balance.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54OK. So knees are suspension, keep lower down.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56When do we start doing backflips?

0:04:56 > 0:04:57'Yeah, maybe not.'

0:04:58 > 0:05:01So I am going to see how high you can jump out of this ramp.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04- All right. Do you want to show me and I'll copy?- Yup.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12That was it. Just try and keep your feet on.

0:05:12 > 0:05:14Feet on.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18That was better. I want you to try and jump off the side, up there.

0:05:18 > 0:05:19I will show you first.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21Just like that?

0:05:22 > 0:05:24Whoa!

0:05:24 > 0:05:28When you did it, you went too fast, and you were quite uncontrolled...

0:05:28 > 0:05:31- I was.- ..when you went over there. - I was definitely in control(!)

0:05:31 > 0:05:32So if you start here,

0:05:32 > 0:05:34you go slower and you're more controlled.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36Just make sure you jump when you get to the line.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40- Yes!- Oh, that was it!

0:05:40 > 0:05:42'Yes, that is me jumping off a ramp, and loving it.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47'But if I am going to take on any really big jumps,

0:05:47 > 0:05:50'I need to get used to the foam pit.'

0:05:50 > 0:05:52- That's a long way down. - Yeah, it's quite far.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55- What's it like to jump into? - It's really fun.

0:05:55 > 0:05:58'This pit allows riders to safely practice more advanced tricks,

0:05:58 > 0:06:00'so Jamie wants me to get used to feeling the full force of

0:06:00 > 0:06:02'the foam on my face.'

0:06:02 > 0:06:03Here we go.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08HE GRUNTS

0:06:08 > 0:06:10- How was that, Jamie? - It was really good.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13Just a bit more practice, and you'll be able to get it better.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15Maybe now's a good time for you to show

0:06:15 > 0:06:17- us what you can do.- Yup. Will do.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19OK. I-I'm going to stay here for a sec.

0:06:19 > 0:06:23'What I didn't mention before is that Jamie isn't just here

0:06:23 > 0:06:25'to help me. No, no.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28'He's here to train, because tomorrow, right here,

0:06:28 > 0:06:31'it's the European Championships, and he's competing.

0:06:31 > 0:06:32'No biggie, then(!)'

0:06:32 > 0:06:35Mate, I really don't know what to say. You're more than ready

0:06:35 > 0:06:38- for tomorrow, aren't you?- Yeah. I've been practising my run

0:06:38 > 0:06:39and I've got it dialled.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41Nice. Well, I hope tomorrow goes really well.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44- I'm going to come and cheer you on, if that's OK?- Yeah, that's fine.

0:06:44 > 0:06:46It's the next morning, it's competition day and, as you can see,

0:06:46 > 0:06:48athletes have turned up for all over the world,

0:06:48 > 0:06:52- and they are excited to be here. Aren't they? ALL:- Yeah!

0:06:52 > 0:06:56What they are about to do is awesome, and it all happens in here.

0:06:56 > 0:06:59There are two competitions today - the amateurs and the pros.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01Now, Jamie hasn't arrived yet - he's a pro -

0:07:01 > 0:07:03but the amateur competitors are warming up

0:07:03 > 0:07:06and getting ready to show us what they're made of.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10OK, so, here we go. The judges are in position,

0:07:10 > 0:07:13the competition is about two minutes away from starting,

0:07:13 > 0:07:14the spectators are all in their position.

0:07:14 > 0:07:16They can't wait to see what's going on, neither can I.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18It is genuinely one of the most exciting things

0:07:18 > 0:07:21I've been to for a long, long time. So I am going to shut up

0:07:21 > 0:07:23and we are going to watch the action. Here we go.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32The guys that we are watching at the moment are doing tail whips,

0:07:32 > 0:07:35backflips, they are upside down half of the time.

0:07:35 > 0:07:36These are the amateurs!

0:07:36 > 0:07:39What's it going to be like this afternoon when Jamie shows us

0:07:39 > 0:07:41what he can do? I cannot wait.

0:07:41 > 0:07:45It really is mind-blowing what these guys can do with a scooter.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48And it just gets better and better.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51Then, the pros arrive, and Jamie sets foot on the top of the ramp

0:07:51 > 0:07:53to begin his first run.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55And he starts with this...

0:07:58 > 0:08:00BARNEY CHEERS

0:08:05 > 0:08:06INDISTINCT

0:08:14 > 0:08:17And that is how you start a pro competition. Absolutely flawless.

0:08:17 > 0:08:20Every single move executed with perfection.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23With Jamie's second run, he goes even bigger.

0:08:23 > 0:08:24And who can blame him?

0:08:24 > 0:08:30Finish in the top five and he earns a place at the World Championships.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32So, as the judges make up their mind,

0:08:32 > 0:08:34you can really feel the tension.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39Brilliantly, he finishes fifth,

0:08:39 > 0:08:42so he is going to the World Championships.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45A great finish to a great day.

0:08:45 > 0:08:47I have been nothing short of inspired,

0:08:47 > 0:08:49and I have been working on my latest trick.

0:08:49 > 0:08:50Do you want to see it? Here we go.

0:08:55 > 0:08:56HE GRUNTS

0:08:56 > 0:08:58See? There you go.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01Amazing what a bit of inspiration can do for you, isn't it?

0:09:01 > 0:09:02Was that good, Barney?

0:09:02 > 0:09:04Get down, Jamie. They'll...

0:09:04 > 0:09:06OK, fine, yeah, Jamie did the jump,

0:09:06 > 0:09:08but I WAS inspired.

0:09:08 > 0:09:09Thanks for that(!)

0:09:10 > 0:09:13The old Harwood switcheroo. That is what we call vintage Harwood.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16Now, you can see we're joined by some Blue Peter fans,

0:09:16 > 0:09:18but we're also joined by a very special man.

0:09:18 > 0:09:22He is Children's Laureate. He is a gold Blue Peter badge holder.

0:09:22 > 0:09:24He is an author, he's an illustrator.

0:09:24 > 0:09:26He's also Chris Riddell.

0:09:26 > 0:09:27CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:09:27 > 0:09:28Welcome to Blue Peter.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30Thank you, Radzi.

0:09:30 > 0:09:33So, Chris. For the uninitiated, what actually is a Children's Laureate?

0:09:33 > 0:09:34Well, a Children's Laureate

0:09:34 > 0:09:37is someone who goes up and down the country talking about

0:09:37 > 0:09:42children's books and why reading and enjoying books is important.

0:09:42 > 0:09:44- You also get a very cool medal to boot.- You do.

0:09:44 > 0:09:46I'm wearing it. You've noticed?

0:09:46 > 0:09:49- And what have the last two years been like?- They've been brilliant.

0:09:49 > 0:09:51I've loved every minute of it.

0:09:51 > 0:09:55It's just felt as if it's gone past in a complete blur,

0:09:55 > 0:09:57but it's been fantastic.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59And on that note, yesterday was a very special day.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02- Wasn't it good? - It was good. What happened?

0:10:02 > 0:10:04We were at Hull town hall

0:10:04 > 0:10:08and I handed over the laureateship

0:10:08 > 0:10:10to the new Children's Laureate.

0:10:10 > 0:10:11Very exciting.

0:10:11 > 0:10:13Now, you weren't allowed to officially announce it then.

0:10:13 > 0:10:15- I wasn't, no.- Would you like to do the honours

0:10:15 > 0:10:18- on Blue Peter now?- Can I? - Please do, Chris.- Oh, fantastic.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21The new Children's Laureate is the amazing...

0:10:21 > 0:10:23- Lauren Child.- Yeah!

0:10:23 > 0:10:25CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Come on over!

0:10:25 > 0:10:29The genius behind Charlie and Lola, Clarice Bean and Ruby Redfoot.

0:10:29 > 0:10:32Welcome to Blue Peter, and congratulations.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34Thank you very much.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37It's very exciting because Quentin Blake was the first

0:10:37 > 0:10:40children's laureate and he was the first illustrator

0:10:40 > 0:10:43that I realised was actually a real person,

0:10:43 > 0:10:46- and I saw him first on BBC television drawing.- Wow!- Yeah.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48So, you're the Children's Laureate for two years,

0:10:48 > 0:10:50what are you planning to do in those two years?

0:10:50 > 0:10:52Well, the big question I always get asked is

0:10:52 > 0:10:55- where do you get your ideas from? - OK.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57And ideas come from everywhere,

0:10:57 > 0:11:01so I guess I want children to start looking around them

0:11:01 > 0:11:05and seeing things, and I spend a lot of time looking out of my window

0:11:05 > 0:11:07because if you're bored you can always look out of the window,

0:11:07 > 0:11:09there's always something good going on.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11And one day I looked out of my window

0:11:11 > 0:11:13and I saw a mermaid walking by.

0:11:13 > 0:11:17- Wow! OK, just a normal day at the office?- Yes.

0:11:17 > 0:11:19These guys here from Simply Books book club

0:11:19 > 0:11:21have got a question for you each,

0:11:21 > 0:11:23but you can determine if you'd like it to be a silly one

0:11:23 > 0:11:25or a serious one.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27Chris, we'll start with yourself. Silly or serious?

0:11:27 > 0:11:29I want a silly one, please.

0:11:29 > 0:11:30OK, so, with you guys, we want your name

0:11:30 > 0:11:33and we'd like your question, please.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36Hi, I'm Jake, and if you were a superhero,

0:11:36 > 0:11:38what superpower would you have?

0:11:38 > 0:11:41- Great question. - What do you mean "if", Jake?

0:11:42 > 0:11:49No. The superpower I would like is to draw very, very fast.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52Ah! You're a very fast illustrator as it is.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54- Lauren, silly or serious? - Serious, please.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56If you could have written... Hi, I'm Emily.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59..if you could have written anybody else's book,

0:11:59 > 0:12:01whose book would you have written?

0:12:01 > 0:12:03That's SUCH a good question.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06I think I would have written Astrid Lindgren's Pippi Longstocking.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09- Excellent.- Nice. Chris, silly or serious?

0:12:09 > 0:12:11Serious, please.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14What was your favourite...? Wait.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16What's your name?

0:12:16 > 0:12:19- My name is Dan.- Dan, hello.

0:12:19 > 0:12:23And how long does it take you to write your story

0:12:23 > 0:12:28from having it from an idea to when it's published?

0:12:28 > 0:12:32- Nice.- My goodness. Erm...

0:12:32 > 0:12:35quite a long time because I do, just like Lauren,

0:12:35 > 0:12:39enjoy looking out of the window, so quite a long time.

0:12:39 > 0:12:40Silly or serious, please, Lauren?

0:12:40 > 0:12:43- Silly.- Silly.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46Do you have a favourite snack to eat whilst you're writing?

0:12:46 > 0:12:48Classic.

0:12:48 > 0:12:53I do. It's those crisps that you can wear on your fingers.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55They're very handy when you're writing

0:12:55 > 0:12:57- cos you can do both things at once.- Nice.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59And, Matilda, yes.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03Silly or serious, sorry, Chris?

0:13:03 > 0:13:04Oh, yes, it's my choice, isn't it?

0:13:04 > 0:13:06I would like silly, please.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09Are you a morning person or a night person?

0:13:09 > 0:13:11- Oh!- Oh, my goodness!

0:13:11 > 0:13:13Erm...

0:13:13 > 0:13:15definitely a night person, I think,

0:13:15 > 0:13:17I'm not a morning person, I'm afraid.

0:13:17 > 0:13:18No, I'm not a morning person.

0:13:18 > 0:13:22That makes the three of us. Lauren, final question for you from myself.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24If you could be in a book genre, what would you be?

0:13:24 > 0:13:26Airport.

0:13:26 > 0:13:27Airport?

0:13:27 > 0:13:28Hm, yes, airport fiction.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31An airport fiction. Of course, what else would it be?

0:13:31 > 0:13:34Well, if you'd like to find out what indeed your book genre is,

0:13:34 > 0:13:36jump on to the Blue Peter website

0:13:36 > 0:13:39and find out by taking part in the quiz.

0:13:39 > 0:13:41Now, there is only two minutes

0:13:41 > 0:13:43until we'll be announcing

0:13:43 > 0:13:45the brand-new Blue Peter spy competition.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48I think we need to give these guys a fantastic round of applause

0:13:48 > 0:13:49being on Blue Peter.

0:13:49 > 0:13:51Give yourselves a round of applause.

0:13:51 > 0:13:53Shall we go and see Lindsey? Great. Let's go.

0:13:53 > 0:13:55Come on over, guys.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57There's some brilliant post that's been sent in this week.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00First, it's worth saying, get on to the Fan Club ASAP, people,

0:14:00 > 0:14:02because they're going to be answering even more of your

0:14:02 > 0:14:05wonderful questions. Those were great, by the way, guys. Well done.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08Now, bees are officially trending. Have a look at this.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11It's been sent in by Paige, who's nine, and she said,

0:14:11 > 0:14:12"Lindsey, I'm sorry you were stung.

0:14:12 > 0:14:16"I've made you a beard of bees after my challenge and it doesn't sting."

0:14:16 > 0:14:19It's a non-stinging one. Lauren, you're my favourite.

0:14:19 > 0:14:21Bees are everywhere. We've had so much bee post.

0:14:21 > 0:14:24We didn't quite know how to sort through it all.

0:14:24 > 0:14:25But this one was amazing.

0:14:25 > 0:14:27Alice, who's seven, has made this.

0:14:27 > 0:14:30It's kind of a 3D fluffy bee beard.

0:14:30 > 0:14:34It's amazing. She's even put in the queen bee, wearing a crown.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36You guys are legends. You've got badges, well done.

0:14:36 > 0:14:38Another legend is Danny from London.

0:14:38 > 0:14:40Last week, we had a penalty shoot out and, Danny,

0:14:40 > 0:14:44you've recreated it perfectly with this 3D penalty shoot-out.

0:14:44 > 0:14:45There's Lindsey and Barney.

0:14:45 > 0:14:48That's got yourself a blue badge, me old mucker.

0:14:48 > 0:14:49Guys, what have you found?

0:14:49 > 0:14:51I really love this one, Lindsey.

0:14:51 > 0:14:55It's by Stanley, he's seven, from Bristol and it's of the Queen.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58I know, it's such a characterful picture of the Queen.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01I don't think I've ever seen such a wonderful picture of the Queen.

0:15:01 > 0:15:04And I love this detail, which is an actual necklace,

0:15:04 > 0:15:07which probably used to belong to somebody, I think.

0:15:07 > 0:15:09Very nice. Really good job, everyone, who sent in post.

0:15:09 > 0:15:12Quite topical as well cos it's the Queen's official birthday

0:15:12 > 0:15:13this Saturday.

0:15:13 > 0:15:16So, happy birthday, Your Majesty. That's going to be a great day.

0:15:16 > 0:15:17Thank you so much for all your post.

0:15:17 > 0:15:20Please, keep it coming to the usual address because we love

0:15:20 > 0:15:23receiving it and displaying it in our wonderful studio.

0:15:23 > 0:15:24But now, it's time to get

0:15:24 > 0:15:26a little bit serious because all week

0:15:26 > 0:15:30on the Fan Club we've been giving you clues to crack a code

0:15:30 > 0:15:32all about our brand-new competition.

0:15:32 > 0:15:35I can reveal that the message was...

0:15:35 > 0:15:38"Only super spies can crack Code-Breaker."

0:15:38 > 0:15:40And that is indeed because our brand-new competition,

0:15:40 > 0:15:43which is amazing, is called Code-Breaker.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46Here's Barney with all the details.

0:15:52 > 0:15:54Codes.

0:15:54 > 0:15:58For thousands of years they've been protecting the information

0:15:58 > 0:16:00we want to keep safe.

0:16:00 > 0:16:02From Ancient Egyptians through to modern day,

0:16:02 > 0:16:07they're in the technology we use, in our security, codes are everywhere,

0:16:07 > 0:16:09protecting secrets.

0:16:09 > 0:16:13But when these codes are broken, they can have a huge impact.

0:16:13 > 0:16:17In fact, codebreakers have changed the course of history.

0:16:20 > 0:16:21This is Bletchley Park,

0:16:21 > 0:16:24once the top secret home of codebreaking in the UK.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30It was here in the second world war that a team

0:16:30 > 0:16:33of super clever codebreakers were tasked with intercepting

0:16:33 > 0:16:35and deciphering Nazi code.

0:16:35 > 0:16:37Code that was apparently impossible to crack,

0:16:37 > 0:16:39but the team here did it.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42And it's the cracking of these codes that experts believe helped

0:16:42 > 0:16:44the Allies win the war.

0:16:44 > 0:16:47Not only that, the technology developed here nearly 80 years ago

0:16:47 > 0:16:50has shaped the way we live our lives today.

0:16:53 > 0:16:57And codes have gone from fact to fiction with some of our

0:16:57 > 0:17:01most-loved spy stories revolving around breaking code.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04In fact, I know one author who loves them more than most.

0:17:05 > 0:17:08Hello, I'm Anthony Horowitz, the author of the Alex Rider series

0:17:08 > 0:17:12as well as books about James Bond and Sherlock Holmes.

0:17:12 > 0:17:16I've always had a fascination with espionage and secret codes,

0:17:16 > 0:17:20so I'm delighted to be part of this brilliant Blue Peter competition.

0:17:20 > 0:17:22Yes, Anthony has teamed up with Blue Peter to bring you

0:17:22 > 0:17:24an incredible competition.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27He's created a code that he wants you to break,

0:17:27 > 0:17:31and if you can do it, he's got another challenge for you.

0:17:31 > 0:17:34Every great spy story needs a villain,

0:17:34 > 0:17:36and there are some fantastic ones out there.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38Think of Moriarty or Blofeld.

0:17:38 > 0:17:41In my own books I've invented Julia Rothman, the head of Scorpio.

0:17:41 > 0:17:43Dr Grief.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46Now, it's your chance to add another name to that list.

0:17:46 > 0:17:49We want you to create a super villain.

0:17:49 > 0:17:53Imagine them going head-to-head with a super spy like Alex Rider

0:17:53 > 0:17:55or James Bond or Jason Bourne.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58I want to see an imaginative super baddie

0:17:58 > 0:18:00with a cool name and a unique feature

0:18:00 > 0:18:02that will make them memorable.

0:18:02 > 0:18:05Remember, they could be male or female.

0:18:05 > 0:18:08Do they even need to be human? You tell me.

0:18:08 > 0:18:10The competition already sounds cool,

0:18:10 > 0:18:13but wait until you hear about the prize.

0:18:13 > 0:18:16The winner will see their own name play a part

0:18:16 > 0:18:20in a series of books that has sold over 16 million copies.

0:18:20 > 0:18:25I'll write you into my latest Alex Rider adventure, Never Say Die.

0:18:25 > 0:18:26Your name in my paperback.

0:18:28 > 0:18:29And it doesn't end there.

0:18:29 > 0:18:33The winner will get to hang out with Anthony for the day

0:18:33 > 0:18:35for a once-in-a-lifetime spy adventure.

0:18:35 > 0:18:37See, I told you it was good.

0:18:38 > 0:18:42All the details of how to enter are on the Blue Peter website.

0:18:42 > 0:18:45Oh, and there's just one more thing.

0:18:45 > 0:18:49If you're the winner, or a runner-up in this incredible competition,

0:18:49 > 0:18:52you'll earn a Blue Peter orange badge.

0:18:52 > 0:18:55- Even- I- haven't got one of these.

0:18:55 > 0:18:58Yes, an orange competition badge could be yours.

0:18:58 > 0:19:02So, crack the code, invent a villain and your name could

0:19:02 > 0:19:05live forever in the pages of history.

0:19:09 > 0:19:11I've actually got goose bumps, it's that good.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14We've got Anthony with us right now in the studio. Anthony, welcome.

0:19:14 > 0:19:16Can we talk more about this amazing competition?

0:19:16 > 0:19:19Let's recap, because the first thing everyone needs to do

0:19:19 > 0:19:21is crack a code, and it's not an easy one, is it?

0:19:21 > 0:19:23Well, it isn't easy, or it doesn't look easy,

0:19:23 > 0:19:25but once you've cracked it,

0:19:25 > 0:19:26the secret is very simple, and

0:19:26 > 0:19:27then you can use it yourself

0:19:27 > 0:19:29and create all sorts of codes

0:19:29 > 0:19:30to send your friends.

0:19:30 > 0:19:32So that's the first time everyone at home

0:19:32 > 0:19:35has seen it - maybe you've already cracked it, if you're a genius.

0:19:35 > 0:19:38The next thing you need to do is come up with your villain's name.

0:19:38 > 0:19:41Why are they a super villain? What makes them unique?

0:19:41 > 0:19:42This is quite a fun task, isn't it?

0:19:42 > 0:19:45This is my favourite part when I'm writing the Alex Rider books,

0:19:45 > 0:19:47thinking up the bad guy. Male or female, what is it they want to do,

0:19:47 > 0:19:50what are they called and what is their evil plan?

0:19:50 > 0:19:52I love doing it and I'm sure kids will have

0:19:52 > 0:19:53a lot of fun in this competition too.

0:19:53 > 0:19:56Let's talk about the reason you should apply -

0:19:56 > 0:19:57of course, the prizes.

0:19:57 > 0:20:01First of all you'll get your hands on a Blue Peter orange badge.

0:20:01 > 0:20:05- I have one here, it's very rare. - They are indeed.

0:20:05 > 0:20:08Secondly, this is absolutely crazy, you will get...

0:20:08 > 0:20:09Please verify this, Anthony.

0:20:09 > 0:20:13..your name inside the paperback version of the Alex Rider series.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16It is absolutely true, if you entered and won it there

0:20:16 > 0:20:19would be a character in that book called Radzi Chinyanganya...

0:20:19 > 0:20:21You even pronounced it correctly!

0:20:21 > 0:20:23..and you would be a friend to Alex Rider, part of the action,

0:20:23 > 0:20:26I'll write him into the paperback version of that book,

0:20:26 > 0:20:28and that's something money can't buy, a really special treat.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31- If only we were 15, Linds. - Can we enter? Please?

0:20:31 > 0:20:33I know, and it gets even better,

0:20:33 > 0:20:37because you even get to have a spy adventure day with your good self.

0:20:37 > 0:20:39That is absolutely true, although sadly,

0:20:39 > 0:20:42my lips are sealed as to the actual details of the day.

0:20:42 > 0:20:45All I can say is, it's going to be a lot of fun, adventure,

0:20:45 > 0:20:49- it's going to be learning how to be a spy like Alex Rider.- Can we enter?

0:20:49 > 0:20:51It's worth saying, if you do enter, by the way, get your name

0:20:51 > 0:20:55right on that form, otherwise we're going to spell it wrong in the book.

0:20:55 > 0:20:59Please also jump on the website for all the terms and conditions,

0:20:59 > 0:21:03- as well, make sure postage is PERFECT.- For example...

0:21:03 > 0:21:05- Perfect!- I like doing this bit, don't I?

0:21:05 > 0:21:07If you do a large envelope like this,

0:21:07 > 0:21:09you will need a large envelope stamp.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12Now, can you tell us what Alex Rider is currently up to?

0:21:12 > 0:21:14Give us some details.

0:21:14 > 0:21:16The new book, well, it begins where the last one,

0:21:16 > 0:21:18Scorpia Rising, ended. Alex is alone, he's in America,

0:21:18 > 0:21:21he thinks his best friend Jack Starbright is dead,

0:21:21 > 0:21:24but then he receives an e-mail out of the blue that sends him on

0:21:24 > 0:21:26an adventure which begins in Egypt, takes him all over the world,

0:21:26 > 0:21:30brings him up against some serious criminal, with the question,

0:21:30 > 0:21:31"Is Jack really alive?"

0:21:31 > 0:21:34OK, so to anyone sitting at home going,

0:21:34 > 0:21:38- "I really want to enter", what would your advice be?- Enter, go do it!

0:21:38 > 0:21:41Have fun, give it a go and maybe we'll meet.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43Anthony, thank you so much for coming in.

0:21:43 > 0:21:45Remember, if you want to enter,

0:21:45 > 0:21:48you've got until Thursday the 29th of June at 12 noon.

0:21:48 > 0:21:50So go and get creative, get your entries in.

0:21:50 > 0:21:53- Anthony, I love when you're on BP. Stick around.- Linds, do a make!

0:21:53 > 0:21:55I'm going to go this way to do an incredible spy make,

0:21:55 > 0:21:57which hopefully will in-SPY-re you.

0:21:57 > 0:22:00How clever is that? We are joined by some amazing BP fans.

0:22:00 > 0:22:02Hello, team, how you doing?

0:22:02 > 0:22:04- Good.- What's your name? - My name's Charlotte.

0:22:04 > 0:22:06- And what's your name? - Sachin.

0:22:06 > 0:22:08You are both mega BP fans, aren't you?

0:22:08 > 0:22:10You love books and you love makes,

0:22:10 > 0:22:12so I've got a feeling this is going to go very well.

0:22:12 > 0:22:14What are we going to be doing today?

0:22:14 > 0:22:18So we are going to be making a book, but it's not just any ordinary book.

0:22:18 > 0:22:20This is no ordinary book - tell me more.

0:22:20 > 0:22:23As when you open the cover and pull out the tab...

0:22:23 > 0:22:25- Yeah? - LINDSEY GASPS

0:22:25 > 0:22:28We've got some secrets in there. This is great.

0:22:28 > 0:22:32- Do you think we should all make it together, live on the telly?- Yeah.

0:22:32 > 0:22:34What are we going to need for our secret book?

0:22:45 > 0:22:47Secret things are very important - high five.

0:22:47 > 0:22:48You read that beautifully, well done.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51The first thing you need to do is print off your template

0:22:51 > 0:22:53from the BP website, it looks something like this.

0:22:53 > 0:22:55You can make your own, be creative, we've gone for

0:22:55 > 0:22:58the Code-Breaker one cos we're obsessed with Code-Breaker today.

0:22:58 > 0:23:01The next thing you need to do is grab your cereal box, like so.

0:23:01 > 0:23:02Turn it on its side like that.

0:23:02 > 0:23:06And then simply wrap around your Code-Breaker template, like that.

0:23:06 > 0:23:08The next thing you need to do is

0:23:08 > 0:23:12cut all the way around that Code-Breaker template until

0:23:12 > 0:23:16you have something which looks a little bit like this. There you go.

0:23:16 > 0:23:18And as you can see, on the other side,

0:23:18 > 0:23:20I've covered it in a bit of coloured paper.

0:23:20 > 0:23:24The next thing we need to do is make our magical box.

0:23:24 > 0:23:25So, to do that,

0:23:25 > 0:23:28you're going to need a bit of leftover bits of cereal box.

0:23:28 > 0:23:32And cut them into four. Hello, I've lost one. Oh, no.

0:23:32 > 0:23:34Into four rectangles.

0:23:34 > 0:23:37You will have one that it is about 18 centimetres by five.

0:23:37 > 0:23:38Two big ones.

0:23:38 > 0:23:42And then, two that are about 10 centimetres by five centimetres.

0:23:42 > 0:23:47The most important bit is that they fit inside your book like that

0:23:47 > 0:23:49so that you can store all your amazing secrets.

0:23:49 > 0:23:51Now, you are having a good old time over here,

0:23:51 > 0:23:55because once we've covered them in white paper, and put

0:23:55 > 0:23:57a bit of blue paper on the other side, what do we need to do?

0:23:57 > 0:24:02Well, you need to use a ruler and pencil to make the pages

0:24:02 > 0:24:03by drawing lines on the card.

0:24:03 > 0:24:05OK, show the camera.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07Let's get a nice old shot of that. Well done, you.

0:24:07 > 0:24:09So, once you have done that all the way round - it will take you

0:24:09 > 0:24:12a while, but you carry on, you're doing very well - you're going to

0:24:12 > 0:24:15get a kind of hollow rectangle that looks something like this.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18And we just simply put a bit of sticky tape there

0:24:18 > 0:24:20to keep it all together.

0:24:20 > 0:24:23Now, in terms of storing your secret bits,

0:24:23 > 0:24:27the next thing you need to do is make your little secret lid.

0:24:27 > 0:24:30So, to do that, grab another piece of coloured paper.

0:24:30 > 0:24:34Put your rectangle over the top like so and then,

0:24:34 > 0:24:37once you've carefully got it in place, draw all the way around it.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40And you can see that we've left a one centimetre border.

0:24:40 > 0:24:42That's really, really important.

0:24:42 > 0:24:45Once you have drawn around it, you need to grab - hello -

0:24:45 > 0:24:50your scissors, and simply cut the corners like that. Be quite neat.

0:24:50 > 0:24:52One, two,

0:24:52 > 0:24:54we've got three...

0:24:54 > 0:24:56You're watching me like a hawk

0:24:56 > 0:24:59because you've already done this bit very well. And four.

0:24:59 > 0:25:02And once you have done that, you need to fold them inwards.

0:25:02 > 0:25:03Is that inwards? Yes. Good.

0:25:03 > 0:25:08Fold them in like so and this is going to start to make our box.

0:25:08 > 0:25:11When you have gone all the way around...

0:25:11 > 0:25:13Mine's not very neat, we'll use yours.

0:25:13 > 0:25:15Let's show the camera yours because it is lovely.

0:25:15 > 0:25:16What have you done there, Charlotte?

0:25:16 > 0:25:20So, what I have done here is I have stuck all these corners down

0:25:20 > 0:25:21and folded them.

0:25:21 > 0:25:25And, then, there is this little part here that you can pull

0:25:25 > 0:25:27and it will reveal your secret stuff.

0:25:27 > 0:25:29She's a legend. OK, so, thank you,

0:25:29 > 0:25:30We've got our lid, we're getting there.

0:25:30 > 0:25:34The next thing you need to do is grab your hollow rectangle

0:25:34 > 0:25:36like so, place it exactly where you want it,

0:25:36 > 0:25:38and remember to put a bit of PVA underneath.

0:25:38 > 0:25:39Plonk it down in place,

0:25:39 > 0:25:42and once you have done that - hello, top tip alert -

0:25:42 > 0:25:46you need to get a weight, it can be a dictionary or a large book,

0:25:46 > 0:25:48I'm using the Sellotape, boom, it's on there,

0:25:48 > 0:25:51it's holding it down and it's keeping it in the right place.

0:25:51 > 0:25:55Once it is properly dry... We'll let that right down here.

0:25:55 > 0:25:58..you should have something that looks a little bit like this.

0:25:58 > 0:26:00There you go, isn't that clever?

0:26:00 > 0:26:03And you can store all your secret things inside there.

0:26:03 > 0:26:06- I think we should get the lid on, shouldn't we?- Yes.- Shall we do it?

0:26:06 > 0:26:09Let's carefully place it on. You've put the tab there...

0:26:09 > 0:26:10beautifully.

0:26:10 > 0:26:15And once it's on, it's something like that.

0:26:15 > 0:26:18Look, you have your very own secret book, it's incredible.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21Now, when we shut the lid, all your secrets are in there.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24Which one do you like? There are so many different designs.

0:26:24 > 0:26:26I like this one because it has got a gold Blue Peter badge,

0:26:26 > 0:26:30- and Anthony Horowitz and...- And Chris Riddell has got one as well.

0:26:30 > 0:26:33- And Chris Riddell.- It's a gold badge party today, isn't it?

0:26:33 > 0:26:35You really can do anything. Be creative.

0:27:07 > 0:27:09Let's take a look here.

0:27:12 > 0:27:16to do the interview. Lauren, who was the very first person to spot her?
