:00:09. > :00:17.The day is finally upon us. We are celebrating the Doctor's fiftieth
:00:18. > :00:23.anniversary and style. Welcome to the Blue Peter Doctor Who party. We
:00:24. > :00:28.will be showing you how to make these epic Dalek cupcakes that you
:00:29. > :00:31.can feast on with all your friends. That is happening here right now, on
:00:32. > :00:52.today's very special Blue Peter. APPLAUSE How
:00:53. > :00:58.are you? Welcome to the show. Let's make it official. Everybody. It's so
:00:59. > :01:02.good to see you. Welcome to the Blue Peter Doctor Who party!
:01:03. > :01:06.Of course, because of the party, it wouldn't be complete without all of
:01:07. > :01:11.our friends here to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who.
:01:12. > :01:14.That is what I am talking about. We've got a jam-packed show for you
:01:15. > :01:17.today. We're going to bring to life the alien you designed on last
:01:18. > :01:22.week's show. That's right. On Thursday, you sent all your funny,
:01:23. > :01:26.imaginative, and creative designs in to make an alien. That was changed
:01:27. > :01:29.into a sketch by our Dr Who story board artist. Keep watching,
:01:30. > :01:36.because, later in the show, that sketch is going to come to life.
:01:37. > :01:38.We would like to call him or her something else. We want a name. We
:01:39. > :01:51.are a live show, so get in touch: Something
:01:52. > :01:54.you've been getting excited about is our Doctor Who competition that we
:01:55. > :01:59.launched on Thursday. All the details for that are on our website:
:02:00. > :01:59.Make sure you
:02:00. > :02:10.competition really is incredible. You get the chance to design a sonic
:02:11. > :02:16.gadget for the crime-fighting trio in Victorian London. Whether you
:02:17. > :02:23.want to include Strax, Madame Vastra or Jenny Flint, get involved. That
:02:24. > :02:29.will be included next year, in 2014. We've probably got the biggest fan
:02:30. > :02:39.in the studio right now to give us an update on the competition, it is
:02:40. > :02:47.CBBC's Mr Chris Johnson! Thank you for having me. You're a
:02:48. > :02:49.Doctor Who super fan? Yes, And you're on the judging panel for the
:02:50. > :02:53.competition. How excited are you on a scale of one to ten? 11. Very
:02:54. > :02:57.excited about this. It is a brilliant opportunity. To take part,
:02:58. > :03:01.it is historical enough. If your gadget makes it into the show, you
:03:02. > :03:07.have unlimited bragging rights to the end of time and beyond. And your
:03:08. > :03:11.respect. Of course! In terms of your favourite sonic gadget of all time,
:03:12. > :03:19.what would it be? There's been quite a few. I am a fan of Mis Foster's
:03:20. > :03:25.sonic pen, which was in Partners in Crime. It has the features of a
:03:26. > :03:27.sonic device and it is a pen. You stuff it in your pocket. It is
:03:28. > :03:33.brilliant. It is a tough decision for the viewers. They've got to find
:03:34. > :03:37.one gadget for one of the characters. They're different, are
:03:38. > :03:40.not they? Very different. A few tips. Jenny gets stuck into the
:03:41. > :03:43.missions, she goes under cover and stuff like that. So a gadget that
:03:44. > :03:48.looks like an ordinary object, perhaps. Something she could carry
:03:49. > :03:59.on her easily. So it can be disguised in her outfit? As for
:04:00. > :04:05.Madame vase as for Madame Vastra she's a classy. Very elegant look.
:04:06. > :04:14.As for Strax, no need to be subtle. He's the most bombastic character in
:04:15. > :04:20.the show. He has two big fingers as well, so think about that. That is a
:04:21. > :04:24.top tip there from the pro himself, Chris Johnson. It is a tough
:04:25. > :04:29.decision, and it is yours at home. If you're struggling to decide who
:04:30. > :04:36.you want to make your sonic gadget for, fear not, because here's here's
:04:37. > :04:45.a guide to all the characters on Paternoster Row.
:04:46. > :04:50.Madame Vastra is a lizard, she was in hibernation deep under the Earth.
:04:51. > :04:57.The tube woke her up. That's how she and the Doctor met. She lives in
:04:58. > :05:05.Victorian London with Jenny and Strax and has the nickname of The
:05:06. > :05:10.Great Detective. Strax is a Sontaran, who is an enemy race.
:05:11. > :05:16.Strax is one of the Doctor's am lies.
:05:17. > :05:21.Strax is easily confused. Strax lives with Madame Vastra and Jenny
:05:22. > :05:28.in the late 19th century. They fight crime, solve mysteries, and he has
:05:29. > :05:36.become Madame Vastra's Butler. Jenny is a Cockney Victorian maid. I
:05:37. > :05:45.don't know why you put up with me. She is married to Madame Vastra who
:05:46. > :05:51.is the Silurian lizard. Jenny is the only human. Madame Vastra has taught
:05:52. > :06:00.her all the sword fighting and the judo moves.
:06:01. > :06:01.See you around, I shouldn't wonder. APPLAUSE
:06:02. > :06:05.Every performance APPLAUSE
:06:06. > :06:09.gets a round of applause here today. Let's talk about the rules here. It
:06:10. > :06:14.is important you stick to them. It is one design for one character. The
:06:15. > :06:21.closing date is 2 December at 12 noon. To give you a bit of a heads
:06:22. > :06:26.up, head over to the website. All the terms and conditions are on
:06:27. > :06:29.there. Stick to the rules. I love to be able to to go behind the scenes
:06:30. > :06:33.of my favourite movies and TV shows, a cool thing to get that insight.
:06:34. > :06:37.When I got the chance to go behind the scenes on the 50th anniversary
:06:38. > :06:41.special, of course, I jumped at the chance. I jumped in the air, I was
:06:42. > :06:46.that excited! Here's what happened when I had a very special trip to
:06:47. > :06:51.London. So the fiftieth anniversary, what do
:06:52. > :06:59.we know so far? Not a lot, really. We know Matt Smith is in it, and
:07:00. > :07:04.David Tennant is back. And there is a mysterious dark Doctor, too. Back
:07:05. > :07:09.in April, Trafalgar Square played host to the Doctor Who team when
:07:10. > :07:16.they turned up to film a big scene for the 50th anniversary special.
:07:17. > :07:19.The Doctor was hanging beneath a huge crane. I don't think they want
:07:20. > :07:24.me to go the whole 90 feet which I want to do because I will get to see
:07:25. > :07:33.all of London, and it will be cool. Matt had a harness, so he was hooked
:07:34. > :07:39.underneath. I had to be belted and hooked into the TARDIS as well. It
:07:40. > :07:42.was hard to keep this bit of the 50th anniversary secret because
:07:43. > :07:47.large crowds up. What is filmed here is only a small part of what makes
:07:48. > :07:50.it on screen. The rest is down to visual effects.
:07:51. > :07:54.Okay, fine, the Blue Peter special effects are not that brilliant, but
:07:55. > :07:57.that's why I am here! I am about to meet the visual effects team on
:07:58. > :08:07.Doctor Who. This is where the special is put
:08:08. > :08:11.into Doctor Who's special effects. This filmed the Dalek parliament
:08:12. > :08:15.with thousands of Daleks when there were only ten there. They've helped
:08:16. > :08:20.the Doctor ride a dinosaur on the spaceship.
:08:21. > :08:27.Murray is the supervisor. Thanks for having us. A pleasure. This must be
:08:28. > :08:34.the scene where the helicopter goes over with the Doctor clinging to the
:08:35. > :08:38.TARDIS. We get a script, the story board from the director. You can see
:08:39. > :08:42.here Nelson column is in the centre. We have the helicopter flying around
:08:43. > :08:45.it. With the arrows on the story board we can tell which direction
:08:46. > :08:49.the helicopter is to go in. This isn't a picture, this is the shot he
:08:50. > :08:54.actually wants to see in very basic form? Yes. To realise the director's
:08:55. > :09:02.vision of a TARDISing pulled across London, the first step is to build a
:09:03. > :09:08.three D TARDIS. This is Neil, one of our animators. Neil makes the
:09:09. > :09:12.graphics move realistically. This is like a CGI version of Matt Smith. He
:09:13. > :09:17.is hanging out the bottom of the TARDIS because the shot is hundreds
:09:18. > :09:23.of feet above the Thames. They can't put a real Matt Smith in there. We
:09:24. > :09:26.animated him waving his arms around. You're effectively stop-motion
:09:27. > :09:31.animation where you make a slight movement every frame? Yes. If I
:09:32. > :09:37.wanted to have a go at this? Yes, of course you can.
:09:38. > :09:41.So if you press S. That saves the position of the arm. Move
:09:42. > :09:45.forwardfour frames, and then you move his arm back. And then you move
:09:46. > :09:48.it on a few frames. And then you move back again. Move it back the
:09:49. > :09:54.other way. I got out the Doctor's way. You've
:09:55. > :09:57.animated a little wave. How long is the sequence? Three seconds long.
:09:58. > :10:02.How long would it take you to animate this? It would take us about
:10:03. > :10:04.two days to animate. Two days for something that small? Yes. It is
:10:05. > :10:09.amazing. Once the something that small? Yes. It is
:10:10. > :10:15.the final stage is to put the computer-generated elements together
:10:16. > :10:20.with the actual footage shot on location, which is where Murray
:10:21. > :10:25.comes in. We know this TARDIS lands on Trafalgar Square. How do you
:10:26. > :10:29.combine computer-generated elements together with the footage shot on
:10:30. > :10:33.location? We shot our helicopter. Then we shot our stuntman hanging
:10:34. > :10:38.from the TARDIS. That is a real person? Yes, on a very big crane,
:10:39. > :10:42.and then we put them all together. What I love about this, it is not
:10:43. > :10:45.just one guy sitting at a computer, this is the effort of lots of
:10:46. > :10:48.different people coming together with loads of different skills and
:10:49. > :10:51.they can create something that looks so believable and amazing as that.
:10:52. > :10:53.You're going to love this episode. Rather than watching it here, why
:10:54. > :11:21.not watching it on your TV screens! APPLAUSE it
:11:22. > :11:26.deserves the cheers. That clip you saw there is an exclusive preview of
:11:27. > :11:30.tonight's episode. No-one had seen it until just then. Make sure you
:11:31. > :11:38.watch the rest of the episode. It's amazing. Just as amazing as our big
:11:39. > :11:41.bad wall full of Doctor Who stuff. You've been sending in so many
:11:42. > :11:47.things Time Lord related. This is one of my favourites from Joseph. He
:11:48. > :11:52.is from Burton upon Trent. He sent in the Doctor Who stamp with the
:11:53. > :11:56.dates. My favourite has to be from Emma from county Derry. She has
:11:57. > :12:09.drawn a Dalek laughing at Emma from county Derry. She has
:12:10. > :12:14.one has been sent in from Alice in improvement poowy S. That could be
:12:15. > :12:17.you and me? Yes. I Would love to be the new Doctor. It's not just the
:12:18. > :12:22.board we can show you stuff on, we've got technology in the studio.
:12:23. > :12:27.We have. If you missed the Blue Pete Doctor Who Special, you can catch up
:12:28. > :12:31.on the BBC iPlayer. If you're watching on Thursday, I interviewed
:12:32. > :12:35.Jenna Coleman. There is another interview on the website which you
:12:36. > :12:41.haven't seen on the show. It is all unseen footage. Go and check it out.
:12:42. > :12:53.When you found out I was getting to meet the Doctor, Matt Smith in the
:12:54. > :12:58.TARDIS, over TARDIS, over 1,700 of you asked me questions. I am here on
:12:59. > :13:03.the set of Doctor Who in Cardiff. Fans know this is the entrance to
:13:04. > :13:14.the TARDIS. I am going to meet Matt Smith!
:13:15. > :13:22.It's called the TARDIS. It can travel anywhere in time and space.
:13:23. > :13:27.And it is mine. Hello. Lovely to meet you. Lovely to meet you. How
:13:28. > :13:31.are you? I am very excited to be here. I've been given my new Blue
:13:32. > :13:35.Peter badge because I lost my old one because I am an idiot. What is
:13:36. > :13:39.it actually like to be the Doctor? I don't know, really. It's sort of
:13:40. > :13:44.magic! What is a day in the office. I wake up about half-past six, I get
:13:45. > :13:49.to work at seven, I have some breakfast at quarter-past seven. Go
:13:50. > :13:53.into make-up and costume, and then we shoot through until one, have
:13:54. > :13:56.your lunch, one until two, and then you shoot through until 7 o'clock.
:13:57. > :14:00.That is it. If you're working, doing a night shoot, you might start that
:14:01. > :14:00.day at 7 o'clock in the evening and work until
:14:01. > :14:05.day at 7 o'clock in the evening and You might be out in
:14:06. > :14:12.day at 7 o'clock in the evening and might be in the TARDIS playing with
:14:13. > :14:23.all the stuff. It is a mad, varied life.
:14:24. > :14:25.I know, dinosaurs! On a spaceship! To celebrate the fiftieth
:14:26. > :14:29.anniversary of Doctor Who, we told the viewers we would be interviewing
:14:30. > :14:35.you, and we asked them the questions they would most like to ask you.
:14:36. > :14:44.Wow. Up for answering them? Hit me. What has been your favourite Doctor
:14:45. > :14:49.Who adventure and why? Christmas Carol was great, and Vincent and the
:14:50. > :14:53.Doctor, and the 11th hour, because I think it's a brilliant piece of
:14:54. > :14:59.writing. What is your favourite Doctor Who monster? Good question.
:15:00. > :15:04.My favourite Doctor Who monster is the whooping angel. Crimson super
:15:05. > :15:10.ladybird says what scene was the most emotional or difficult to film?
:15:11. > :15:16.I think one of the most emotional was when Carol and Arthur left, and
:15:17. > :15:20.we were in Manhattan, and we were in a cold graveyard. It was just a very
:15:21. > :15:25.difficult day shooting. Please, come back into the TARDIS.
:15:26. > :15:29.It was emotional because it was Karen's last stand, and she's a good
:15:30. > :15:47.friend, and seeing her go was sad. If you could travel anywhere in the
:15:48. > :15:57.TARDIS, where would you go, and why? I would go and pick up Frank
:15:58. > :16:01.Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, watch dinosaurs, and sit in those boats in
:16:02. > :16:05.the ocean, and see mad, huge deign Sawyer fish, and then
:16:06. > :16:12.the ocean, and see mad, huge deign England watch the World Cup in 1966.
:16:13. > :16:16.What about your best tips to be an actor or actress? Maybe to apply for
:16:17. > :16:21.the National Youth Theatre. That's a good platform. They give you a good
:16:22. > :16:25.environment to practise and learn, and be inventive and express
:16:26. > :16:30.yourself. Read as many plays as you can. Watch as many good actors as
:16:31. > :16:33.you can. Practise as much as you can. Go and make things with your
:16:34. > :16:40.friends. It is practise, practise, practise. It is like being a great
:16:41. > :16:44.sportsman - the more you practise, the better you get. What is the
:16:45. > :16:47.highlight of being the 11th Doctor? The friends I've made at work
:16:48. > :16:50.because we have a wonderful crew, and I've made friends for life. I
:16:51. > :16:59.think that's a wonderful thing to take away from any experience.
:17:00. > :17:04.Fantastic. Thank you very much, it's been an
:17:05. > :17:09.absolute pleasure. Thanks for having me on Blue Peter. To everyone at
:17:10. > :17:13.home, enjoy Doctor Who's 50th anniversary. It's going to be a
:17:14. > :17:21.belter! I am going to head off home now because ultimately I need - it's
:17:22. > :17:32.a need - it's weeping angel. It means I can't blink!
:17:33. > :17:39.Don't worry, nobody was hurt. Favourite Doctor? David Tennant.
:17:40. > :17:48.Matt Smith. Say hello to Poppy, Jack, Sarah and will. High five,
:17:49. > :17:55.ten, two, one! It is a Doctor Who make. We will be
:17:56. > :17:58.making a big chocolatey treat which will send you mad. It's called a
:17:59. > :18:14.extermi-bake. No-one First thing you need to sort out are
:18:15. > :18:18.your ingredients. You need big muffins, and some little cakes, like
:18:19. > :18:22.the sort of cupcake things that you can get. This stuff is called butter
:18:23. > :18:27.icing. We've got chocolate butter icing because it is rich in
:18:28. > :18:31.chocolate and we like it a lot. You need big large chocolate buttons,
:18:32. > :18:33.chocolate tea cakes, and some more butter icing. I will talk you
:18:34. > :18:37.through the decorating when we get there. So you need to take your big
:18:38. > :18:42.muffins, and you want to cut the tops off. Poppy, do you want to do
:18:43. > :18:45.this for me? Nice and carefully. You want to get a nice flat edge and
:18:46. > :18:51.turn it upside-down. That's going to give us the bottom of the Dalek. You
:18:52. > :18:55.need this, it is the little cupcake. That's going to go on top. It is
:18:56. > :18:59.going to be upside-down to make the right shape. This is where the
:19:00. > :19:03.butter icing comes in handy. It's like the glue, you can eat it.
:19:04. > :19:07.Spread that on top of your muffin. Spread another one on top of it like
:19:08. > :19:10.that. Make as much mess as you like. We're not tidying up. The idea is to
:19:11. > :19:17.put some chocolate around the outside of it too so it looks like
:19:18. > :19:23.this. Jack, you know what you're doing because you can see chocolate
:19:24. > :19:31.and you're going for it like a cat goes for cheese. Take your buttons -
:19:32. > :19:35.cats like cheese. Right? You know what you're doing. It is dead easy
:19:36. > :19:38.because you've got a Dalek for reference here in the studio. This
:19:39. > :19:41.is the head part. You need to make it in layers like this. If you don't
:19:42. > :19:45.have your Dalek at home, you can watch the show, and we will show you
:19:46. > :19:49.how to do it. Stick your button on top of that. You're being very
:19:50. > :19:52.delicate, Jack. You can make the butter cream from scratch if you
:19:53. > :19:54.want to, but we are cheating because it is quicker.
:19:55. > :19:59.You can also make your own cakes, but we've cheated there as well, but
:20:00. > :20:00.you can do whatever you want. You know how creative you are. It's a
:20:01. > :20:03.proper stack. You've know how creative you are. It's a
:20:04. > :20:06.cake on top. Beautiful. Now it is time to decorate. There's
:20:07. > :20:12.cake on top. Beautiful. Now it is shop. There is a Dalek that you can
:20:13. > :20:16.help to decorate. Let's talk about your autograph you got from David
:20:17. > :20:20.Tennant. How did you get that? I sent him a letter, and then he gave
:20:21. > :20:26.me an autograph back. That's pretty amazing, isn't it? Yes. Did you give
:20:27. > :20:30.him money! No, just sent it! Doctors are so nice! If you're looking for
:20:31. > :20:39.tips and ideas what to do with the decoration, do it like a Dalek: you
:20:40. > :20:45.can do a row of four. We're next going to look the a the
:20:46. > :20:55.most feared weapon - the plungers. You need tin foil, cocktail sticks.
:20:56. > :20:59.Wrap them in tin foil. You've got little marshmallows that you get on
:21:00. > :21:07.coffee sometimes, and we've got these jelly sweets as well. Those
:21:08. > :21:12.are for the beacons on top. Someone thought they were ears! They get
:21:13. > :21:18.stuck on with the butter cream once they've been stuck into the Daleks.
:21:19. > :21:23.How are you going? Good. If you do make one, you can send us a picture.
:21:24. > :21:28.That would be lovely. Or send us the cake! Are we not allowed to do that!
:21:29. > :21:35.Please, send me cake. I want cake! How are we doing? It's dead simple
:21:36. > :21:42.but really good fun as well. What I find hard is not eating the
:21:43. > :21:48.chocolate. I am being so controlled right now. That's what I came here
:21:49. > :21:57.for - the eating part! All the details Mr On the website. You've
:21:58. > :22:01.smashed it out the park. Yes, you have indeed. And, thank you guys,
:22:02. > :22:08.for coming in. You've been awesome today, but Doctor Who is actually
:22:09. > :22:12.anywhere in the world. It is those kinds of surprised faces which is
:22:13. > :22:18.why I told you. It is fans from Salford to Singapore, so the 50th
:22:19. > :22:27.anniversary episode is a pretty big deal. Check this out.
:22:28. > :22:30.Since 1963, for a whopping 50 years, Doctor Who has filled the hearts and
:22:31. > :22:32.screens of the nation. It is not just the UK who will be watching the
:22:33. > :22:38.special anniversary episode. The rest of the world is waiting to
:22:39. > :22:43.watch too. The The Day of the Doctor will
:22:44. > :22:48.transmit to 80 countries at exactly the same time. Doctor Who began its
:22:49. > :22:50.quest to take over the world in 1964 when New Zealand became the first
:22:51. > :22:55.country outside of the UK to show the first series. Earlier this year,
:22:56. > :22:57.all the way over in Africa, nine Doctor Who episodes thought to be
:22:58. > :23:02.missing forever from the BBC archives were found in a Nigerian TV
:23:03. > :23:07.station. At one point, over 100 episodes were missing from the BBC
:23:08. > :23:10.archives, and, in 2006, Blue Peter even made an appeal to help find the
:23:11. > :23:17.missing tapes. If you can find one, we will be sending you a life-sized
:23:18. > :23:23.Dalek of your very own. Very scary, but very cool. Good luck with the
:23:24. > :23:27.search. In 1996, Doctor Who stormed our
:23:28. > :23:31.screens with the new Doctor and a TV movie. Produced and filmed in
:23:32. > :23:35.Canada, this was the first Doctor Who production made completely
:23:36. > :23:40.outside of the UK. Australia had a key role in the
:23:41. > :23:47.origins of Doctor Who. The iconic Doctor theme music was written by an
:23:48. > :23:51.Australian musician, Ron Grainer. Furthermore, in 1967, Doctor Who
:23:52. > :23:56.televised its one and only episode with an Australian setting, the
:23:57. > :24:00.Enemy of the World. So, when you're hiding behind your cushions watching
:24:01. > :24:04.The Day of the Doctor, it's quite likely the rest of
:24:05. > :24:11.too. APPLAUSE
:24:12. > :24:13.too. I love that! That is why it is the
:24:14. > :24:17.longest running TV sci-fi series. Now time for an exciting part,
:24:18. > :24:21.because if you cast your minds back to Thursday, you remember we asked
:24:22. > :24:26.you to get in touch and give us your funny, imaginative and creative
:24:27. > :24:31.ideas to make your very own unique alien. Then a storey board artist
:24:32. > :24:35.changed your ideas into a sketch. You're going to get to see that
:24:36. > :24:39.alien come to life in the Blue Peter studio. For this, the fiftieth
:24:40. > :24:41.anniversary Special, we have our own Blue Peter alien. Welcome to the
:24:42. > :24:57.studio! Look at that! Really, really scary.
:24:58. > :25:00.I like how big it is. Look at the seven eyes on its head. It's got the
:25:01. > :25:06.horns that you asked for, it's got a lot of fluff. I like it. This is
:25:07. > :25:11.something you designed. If you got in touch and put your ideas forward,
:25:12. > :25:14.and your idea was used, you will see your name scrolling on the bottom of
:25:15. > :25:18.the screen. Thank you to Sean Williams our storey board artist who
:25:19. > :25:25.made some of this possible with all the ideas, and to Katy because she
:25:26. > :25:29.made this costume in 24 hours. Unbelievable. Thank you to all of
:25:30. > :25:33.you getting at home making this possible. We couldn't have done it
:25:34. > :25:38.without you. Time flies when you're having fun. Especially when you've
:25:39. > :25:44.got a TARDIS. Can I keep the TARDIS? No! Now, it is almost time for the
:25:45. > :25:49.end of the show, but before we do, we have time to read some of your
:25:50. > :25:52.e-mails and comments you've been sending in. At the beginning you to
:25:53. > :26:01.tell us what would your alien be called and where would it be froould
:26:02. > :26:07.it be from? "Static lemon". It should be called the Watcher
:26:08. > :26:14.it be from? "Static lemon". It Planet Evilius. Is
:26:15. > :26:19.it be from? "Static lemon". It name? Yes, seven eyes! Okay, Indigo
:26:20. > :26:27.Blowing Potato. The Looker, because of its eyes. Then says I think it
:26:28. > :26:34.should be a marsh-up of Barney, Lindsey, and Radzy's names, so Peter
:26:35. > :26:43.remember it's a Blue Peter alien, so it is Barladzy!
:26:44. > :26:54.One thing I thought when I saw it was Barlazy. I think it should be
:26:55. > :27:06.called Zanfrak It should be called Zappatron. Apparently, that is a
:27:07. > :27:12.small town on the planet Paintol. And then Bull Rinks from one of
:27:13. > :27:17.Jupiter's Moons. Blue Peter viewers are on the money today. That is all
