0:00:04 > 0:00:07It's access all areas on today's Blue Peter as we go
0:00:07 > 0:00:10behind the scenes on a West End musical.
0:00:10 > 0:00:13Plus, we're meeting a nine-year-old tipped for sporting stardom.
0:00:13 > 0:00:16All of that, and there's a brand-new competition to tell you about.
0:00:16 > 0:00:20And, did I say, we've got exclusive access here - we're at Wimbledon!
0:00:20 > 0:00:21Let's go!
0:00:37 > 0:00:40Hello and welcome to a very special episode of Blue Peter,
0:00:40 > 0:00:42coming direct to you from Wimbledon.
0:00:42 > 0:00:44Now, Barney and Radzi are off filming today so it's just me
0:00:44 > 0:00:47but I am so excited to be here.
0:00:47 > 0:00:50This is Britain's biggest tennis tournament and, last year,
0:00:50 > 0:00:5517 million of us tuned in to watch Andy Murray win the Men's Final,
0:00:55 > 0:00:56just over there on Centre Court.
0:00:56 > 0:00:59And I was actually lucky enough to go along and be there with
0:00:59 > 0:01:03my mum, and I've got to tell you, it was one of the best days of my life.
0:01:03 > 0:01:05The atmosphere was just electric.
0:01:05 > 0:01:08Now, all around me you can see loads of different courts,
0:01:08 > 0:01:09as well as Centre Court that way.
0:01:09 > 0:01:11Over to my right there's Court One and then there's
0:01:11 > 0:01:15lots of different show courts down here, ready for play later on today.
0:01:15 > 0:01:17And, over there, you can just see the top of Henman Hill,
0:01:17 > 0:01:19or as it's now called, Murray Mount,
0:01:19 > 0:01:22where people can watch the matches later, with the big screen.
0:01:22 > 0:01:24And, of course, all around me there's broadcasters and
0:01:24 > 0:01:28journalists everywhere, going out to all over the world from Wimbledon.
0:01:28 > 0:01:30Now, just behind me, all the crowds are gathering,
0:01:30 > 0:01:32waiting to bag themselves a good seat.
0:01:32 > 0:01:35And I think, as we speak, the rope has just dropped.
0:01:35 > 0:01:36They've all entered Wimbledon,
0:01:36 > 0:01:38they're starting to enjoy the atmosphere.
0:01:38 > 0:01:41I cannot believe how many people are down there and, last year,
0:01:41 > 0:01:44nearly half a million people walked through those doors.
0:01:44 > 0:01:46And I think, if this crowd is anything to go by, it is
0:01:46 > 0:01:48going to be just as packed this year.
0:01:49 > 0:01:52Now, players from all over the world come here to compete,
0:01:52 > 0:01:54both in the junior and the senior tournaments.
0:01:54 > 0:01:57And, of course, last year it was all about Andy Murray.
0:01:57 > 0:01:59But a few years ago, back in 2008,
0:01:59 > 0:02:02it was Laura Robson who set the courts alight by winning
0:02:02 > 0:02:07the Junior Girls Championship at the age of just 14-years-old.
0:02:07 > 0:02:10A few weeks ago, Radzi went to meet a British youngster already
0:02:10 > 0:02:13tipped for tennis stardom and hoping to follow in Laura's footsteps.
0:02:13 > 0:02:14Check it out.
0:02:16 > 0:02:17It's summer.
0:02:17 > 0:02:21Strawberries are being picked and Wimbledon is finally here.
0:02:21 > 0:02:25But, I'm not interested in meeting Murray or joking around with
0:02:25 > 0:02:28Djokovic, as I'm here at a training centre to meet a tennis
0:02:28 > 0:02:29star of the future.
0:02:32 > 0:02:34Meet nine-year-old Jenaya.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37Jenaya has been playing tennis since she was five.
0:02:37 > 0:02:39And, over the last four years, has singled herself
0:02:39 > 0:02:42out as a potential tennis superstar of the future.
0:02:44 > 0:02:47In fact, she's so good, that's she's already successfully
0:02:47 > 0:02:50competing against children two years older than her.
0:02:53 > 0:02:57Well, Jenaya, it's great to meet you as well as your big brother Namaya.
0:02:57 > 0:02:59How did you start playing tennis?
0:02:59 > 0:03:02First, I started at badminton and then I realised I'm really good
0:03:02 > 0:03:04but, then, I wanted to start another sport
0:03:04 > 0:03:10so I started to do some tennis and realised I was really good at it.
0:03:10 > 0:03:12And do you have a tennis hero, someone that you really look up to?
0:03:12 > 0:03:14- Who is it?- Serena.
0:03:14 > 0:03:17Serena Williams, one of the greatest players of all time.
0:03:17 > 0:03:19What is it you like about Serena so much?
0:03:19 > 0:03:22When she plays, she means the shots that she hits.
0:03:22 > 0:03:25And she doesn't give up.
0:03:25 > 0:03:26And, one day,
0:03:26 > 0:03:29if you could win any trophy in the world, what would it be?
0:03:29 > 0:03:30Wimbledon.
0:03:30 > 0:03:32You'd love to win Wimbledon?
0:03:32 > 0:03:34Now, I've been set the challenge of playing you.
0:03:34 > 0:03:37I think I'm going to need a little bit of help,
0:03:37 > 0:03:39so if you guys want to warm up, I'm going to speak to your coach.
0:03:44 > 0:03:47So, while Jenaya warmed up with her brother,
0:03:47 > 0:03:49I grabbed a chat with her coach, Richard.
0:03:50 > 0:03:53Well, Richard, you coach Jenaya, and I've seen her play,
0:03:53 > 0:03:55she looks like she plays a mean game of tennis.
0:03:55 > 0:03:56How good is she?
0:03:56 > 0:04:00She's very good, yeah, she has a great enthusiasm for the game,
0:04:00 > 0:04:03she's a real hard worker, she's very good for her age.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06And, then, how does she balance her training with schoolwork?
0:04:06 > 0:04:08Because that's a big commitment.
0:04:08 > 0:04:10It's very difficult, she doesn't have much spare time
0:04:10 > 0:04:15but that's a commitment that, really, she's made.
0:04:15 > 0:04:18And what is it that Jenaya's got that other children perhaps
0:04:18 > 0:04:19don't have at this stage?
0:04:19 > 0:04:22She's got an extremely powerful hit of the ball,
0:04:22 > 0:04:26she plays with no fear which makes her a very good competitor.
0:04:26 > 0:04:29I'm going to put you on the spot, can she go all the way?
0:04:29 > 0:04:33I very much hope so, if she does put the hard work in, day in
0:04:33 > 0:04:37and day out, then she's good as good a chance as anybody out there.
0:04:37 > 0:04:38And the other big question, Richard,
0:04:38 > 0:04:41is can she beat someone of my standard?
0:04:41 > 0:04:43She'll give it a go, I'm sure.
0:04:43 > 0:04:46And so will I. Right, it's time to play.
0:04:48 > 0:04:52Welcome to Centre Court and the first ever Blue Peter Championship.
0:04:54 > 0:04:57As two rising stars face each other in one of the most anticipated
0:04:57 > 0:04:58matches of the decade.
0:05:01 > 0:05:02And, they're off.
0:05:02 > 0:05:05Jenaya clearly meaning business.
0:05:05 > 0:05:07And Radzi struggling to return the serves.
0:05:09 > 0:05:11One set down and Jenaya clearly in front.
0:05:13 > 0:05:15Jenaya is not taking any prisoners today.
0:05:17 > 0:05:19It's looking hopeless for Radzi.
0:05:21 > 0:05:24Oh, my word, it's all too easy for her.
0:05:27 > 0:05:29Have you ever seen anything of the like?
0:05:35 > 0:05:37Yes, yes, it's all over, it's all over.
0:05:37 > 0:05:40Jenaya the clear champion of the day, well done, girl.
0:05:41 > 0:05:43Jenaya, you beat me fair and square
0:05:43 > 0:05:46and in tennis it's customary to shake hands, so well do...
0:05:46 > 0:05:48No, seriously though, well do...
0:05:48 > 0:05:50So childish.
0:05:50 > 0:05:54Jenaya, last person to stay on the court wins it - yes! I'm the winner!
0:05:55 > 0:05:58Do you know what? I don't think Radzi stood a chance, there,
0:05:58 > 0:06:01but let's hope we see Jenaya here on Centre Court in a few years' time.
0:06:01 > 0:06:04Now, we're here today before the doors have opened to the public
0:06:04 > 0:06:06and that's because we're going to meet someone who plays a very
0:06:06 > 0:06:08important role here a Wimbledon.
0:06:08 > 0:06:11This is Rufus the Harris hawk and it's his job to make sure
0:06:11 > 0:06:13that pigeons don't disturb play, here on Centre Court.
0:06:13 > 0:06:16- And, Imogen, you look after Rufus, don't you?- Yes, I do.
0:06:16 > 0:06:18So, how does he go about doing his job?
0:06:18 > 0:06:21Rufus turns up at five o'clock every morning, during the Championships.
0:06:21 > 0:06:24And any other pigeons that think they might have had a sneaky chance
0:06:24 > 0:06:26to come and sleep under the Wimbledon roof,
0:06:26 > 0:06:29he wakes them up nice and early as a bit of a frightening alarm clock
0:06:29 > 0:06:32and gets them out over to somewhere else where they're not going
0:06:32 > 0:06:34to cause any problem during play.
0:06:34 > 0:06:36And, also, we try and get in before all of the public get in
0:06:36 > 0:06:39because Rufus likes to stay quite localised to me
0:06:39 > 0:06:41and if he can't pick me out in a crowd, he might just go
0:06:41 > 0:06:44over to the golf course and have a little bath in the pond.
0:06:44 > 0:06:47- So, he'll just go elsewhere. - I don't blame him.
0:06:47 > 0:06:50And, why do you think Rufus is so good at doing this job?
0:06:50 > 0:06:52Rufus is known as a broad-winged hawk,
0:06:52 > 0:06:56- so he's got a shorter wingspan which I can show you.- Oh, yeah.
0:06:56 > 0:06:58And he's really good at weaving in and out of woodland,
0:06:58 > 0:07:00- that's what he's designed to do.- OK.
0:07:00 > 0:07:03So, up in the girders of the roof he's really good at weaving in
0:07:03 > 0:07:05and out of them, he weaves in and out of the courts.
0:07:05 > 0:07:07And he's so experienced, he's such a VIP, he's got his own pass,
0:07:07 > 0:07:08- hasn't he?- He does, yes.
0:07:08 > 0:07:12He has his own pass because a couple of times people have asked why
0:07:12 > 0:07:15I'm taking my pet in to watch the tennis. Which doesn't really happen.
0:07:15 > 0:07:17No, you're here to work.
0:07:17 > 0:07:20Now, before you go off, do you think I could have a go at holding him?
0:07:20 > 0:07:22- Absolutely, yes. Definitely. - Am I allowed? OK.
0:07:22 > 0:07:25- If you pop the glove on your left hand, that's it, perfect.- OK.
0:07:25 > 0:07:27- And you hold your hand just as if it's a branch.- Like that?
0:07:27 > 0:07:30- There you go.- There we go, back you go.- That's perfect.
0:07:30 > 0:07:33- I like his little bell, is that so you know where he is?- Yes, exactly.
0:07:33 > 0:07:35So, if he's hiding under the rafters somewhere we know where he is.
0:07:35 > 0:07:38Yeah, he does like to find little nice hidey holes.
0:07:38 > 0:07:41OK, so he's got his hood on, even Wimbledon colours, there.
0:07:41 > 0:07:43- So, should we get the hood off and let him fly?- I think so, yes.
0:07:43 > 0:07:46- So, if you let go of his jesses and then he'll be ready to fly.- Let go?
0:07:46 > 0:07:49Yeah, if you let go of these ones here and then you can kind of...
0:07:49 > 0:07:53- Of you go, Rufus.- Come on, then.- Oh, he's gone.
0:07:53 > 0:07:55So, why is it so important that he gets rid of the pigeons?
0:07:55 > 0:07:58- What's wrong with the pigeons? - There's nothing wrong with pigeons,
0:07:58 > 0:08:01it's just that, the last thing you would want is for Andy Murray
0:08:01 > 0:08:04or any of the tennis players to be interrupted by some pigeons
0:08:04 > 0:08:06when they're in the zone and concentrating on the match.
0:08:06 > 0:08:08They don't need to think about anything
0:08:08 > 0:08:09other than winning that match.
0:08:09 > 0:08:12He's kind of on top of the roof. How do we go about getting him back?
0:08:12 > 0:08:15Yes, well, the way it works is that I will give you some food
0:08:15 > 0:08:18and Rufus can see ten times further then we can so he's always
0:08:18 > 0:08:20keeping an eye to see where his easiest bit of food will come from.
0:08:20 > 0:08:22He will know that you've got some food.
0:08:22 > 0:08:25So when you lift your arm and you've got some food there,
0:08:25 > 0:08:26he should respond pretty quickly.
0:08:26 > 0:08:29- OK, let's get him some chicken, then.- Here we go.
0:08:29 > 0:08:32- Hold it like that, is that OK? - He's just thinking about it, I think. IMOGEN WHISTLES
0:08:32 > 0:08:38- If you wiggle your hand a bit... Here he comes.- Oh, that's quite a speed.
0:08:38 > 0:08:41- He missed!- Shall we try him from there again?- Come on, Rufus.
0:08:43 > 0:08:48- Chicken. Here we go.- Oh my goodness. - There we go, we knew you would.
0:08:48 > 0:08:52- Oh, he took it and left.- He got some free breakfast, there, from you.
0:08:52 > 0:08:54He got a free bit of chicken for breakfast, there.
0:08:54 > 0:08:57Thank you so much. I've loved meeting you and Rufus.
0:08:57 > 0:08:58I'm going to leave you to catch him.
0:08:58 > 0:09:00- Because I don't think I'm very good at it.- Thank you.
0:09:00 > 0:09:02He's gone to get more breakfast.
0:09:02 > 0:09:05Now, later today this court is going to be packed full with tennis
0:09:05 > 0:09:08fans and that's because it's such a popular sport, both to play
0:09:08 > 0:09:09and to watch.
0:09:09 > 0:09:12And it's one of the sports that you could choose to inspire a
0:09:12 > 0:09:17friend to get involved with to earn your Blue Peter Sport Badge 2014.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22year and inspire a friend to take up a new sport.

0:09:42 > 0:09:43take part in sport.
0:09:43 > 0:09:45Maybe you're cricket crazy,

0:11:20 > 0:11:23He's done Adventures of Blue Peter, it's kind of a comic strip

0:12:18 > 0:12:20the four girls who share the role of Matilda.
0:12:28 > 0:12:29Hi, I'm Lollie.

0:12:51 > 0:12:57# We never thought it was possible But here it is coming true. #
0:12:57 > 0:13:00# Sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty. #
0:13:00 > 0:13:01In my school?
0:13:04 > 0:13:07Inspired by Roald Dahl's children's novel
0:13:07 > 0:13:10and produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company, Matilda the Musical
0:13:10 > 0:13:14shows the power of imagination in an inspiring story of a girl who
0:13:14 > 0:13:16dares to change her destiny.
0:13:30 > 0:13:32We take it in turns to play Matilda.
0:13:32 > 0:13:36We each do two nights a week and we stand-by twice, for each other.
0:13:36 > 0:13:40We are all now best friends because we all live together,
0:13:40 > 0:13:44we work together and we play together and it's amazing.
0:13:44 > 0:13:48We're really more than friends, really. We're almost like sisters.
0:13:48 > 0:13:50This area is called the front of house.
0:13:55 > 0:14:01This is where you can buy your tickets.
0:14:01 > 0:14:03'The show is about to start in three minutes.
0:14:03 > 0:14:05'Three minutes, please take your seats.'
0:14:05 > 0:14:10There is, normally, an announcement to say that the show will start soon.
0:14:10 > 0:14:11Let's go.
0:14:13 > 0:14:15We take it in turns to play Matilda,
0:14:15 > 0:14:18but when we do perform we perform here.
0:14:18 > 0:14:23This theatre holds a massive 1,232 people.
0:14:23 > 0:14:25There are eight shows a week and we perform twice.
0:14:31 > 0:14:33Come with me, I'm going to show you some props.
0:14:36 > 0:14:38Here we are, this is the side of stage where lots of quick
0:14:38 > 0:14:40changes take place.
0:14:40 > 0:14:42This is Mr Wormwood's scooter.
0:14:42 > 0:14:43Now, get out of here!
0:14:43 > 0:14:45You little stink worm.
0:14:45 > 0:14:49You can tell it's his because it's got these dice that people
0:14:49 > 0:14:51sometimes have in cars.
0:14:51 > 0:14:53This is Mrs Wormwood's mirror.
0:14:53 > 0:14:56She uses this quite a lot because she loves fashion
0:14:56 > 0:14:58and she loves looking at herself.
0:14:58 > 0:15:03These are used when Matilda wants to get her own back on her parents.
0:15:03 > 0:15:08What she does is, she gets her mother's hair dye
0:15:08 > 0:15:12and her father's hair tonic and pours all of the hair tonic
0:15:12 > 0:15:17out of the bottle and pours the hair dye into the hair tonic.
0:15:17 > 0:15:21Then, her father puts it on in the morning and his hair turns green.
0:15:23 > 0:15:27This is the wardrobe area where all our costumes are stored.
0:15:31 > 0:15:32Usually,
0:15:32 > 0:15:36we get into costume about 30 minutes before the performance starts.
0:15:36 > 0:15:40It takes quite a long time to get our mics done and our hair
0:15:40 > 0:15:43and put out costumes on.
0:15:43 > 0:15:46These are our mics. We have two in case one fails.
0:15:46 > 0:15:49They help us be heard when we're performing.
0:15:51 > 0:15:53This is Matilda's costume.
0:15:53 > 0:15:57Matilda wears her blue dress, a blazer and a school outfit.
0:15:58 > 0:16:00And, a bowler hat.
0:16:04 > 0:16:08Another important part of our routine are the vocal warm up sessions
0:16:08 > 0:16:10that help us to prepare before each show.
0:16:23 > 0:16:25The best thing about being Matilda...
0:16:25 > 0:16:28There isn't really a best thing, every moment of it is amazing.
0:16:28 > 0:16:29Yeah, I agree.
0:16:33 > 0:16:36On my first show, I couldn't stop smiling because everyone
0:16:36 > 0:16:40started standing up and it's just a really amazing feeling.
0:16:40 > 0:16:44# Black bloods, blue bloods, black bloods, blue bloods... #
0:16:44 > 0:16:48When I walk out on stage I feel like, oh, my gosh,
0:16:48 > 0:16:50what's going to go on in this show.
0:16:50 > 0:16:52But then at the end, I'm like, wow, I'm proud of it.
0:16:57 > 0:17:01It's really nice to see all the people really cheering for you.
0:17:05 > 0:17:07So, that's what it's like being us.
0:17:08 > 0:17:11ALL: Being Matilda.
0:17:11 > 0:17:12Aw, do you know what?
0:17:12 > 0:17:16I thought I had the best job in the world but that looks so fun.
0:17:16 > 0:17:19And if you want to see another Being Me film, head to the website
0:17:19 > 0:17:22where you can see another young performer called Xavier.
0:17:22 > 0:17:23It is worth checking out.
0:17:23 > 0:17:26Now, you may be wondering why I'm dressed like this,
0:17:26 > 0:17:28it's because we're in an area of Wimbledon that you wouldn't
0:17:28 > 0:17:30normally get to see on television.
0:17:30 > 0:17:32But it plays a vital role.
0:17:32 > 0:17:35This, of course, is the catering department and, why is it
0:17:35 > 0:17:36so important, I hear you ask?
0:17:36 > 0:17:40Because it's the largest sports catering event in Europe.
0:17:41 > 0:17:44Throughout the tournament, as well as 300,000 cups of tea
0:17:44 > 0:17:50and coffee, 250,000 bottles of water, 190,000 sandwiches, 135,000
0:17:50 > 0:17:55ice creams, the catering department also prepare 28,000 kilos of these.
0:17:55 > 0:17:57Of course, it's strawberries.
0:17:57 > 0:18:00That's nearly the same amount as ten hippos.
0:18:00 > 0:18:02Mmm, tasty. They are delicious.
0:18:02 > 0:18:06But, of course, doing that takes a lot of preparation and organisation.
0:18:06 > 0:18:08And, the man in charge of that is Johnny.
0:18:08 > 0:18:10- Hi, Johnny, how're you doing? - Very good, thank you.
0:18:10 > 0:18:13- Thank you for coming on Blue Peter. - Thank you very much for having us.
0:18:13 > 0:18:15Now, how do you ensure that the public don't run
0:18:15 > 0:18:16out of strawberries?
0:18:16 > 0:18:20Well, we've got lots of teams like this, all over the grounds,
0:18:20 > 0:18:22and that's what they do all day. Hole strawberries.
0:18:22 > 0:18:25- Do you want to have a go? - Yes, go on, then.- Come on, then.
0:18:25 > 0:18:27- OK, what do I need to do? - So, you just need to...
0:18:27 > 0:18:28See what the girls are doing?
0:18:28 > 0:18:30They just pick that green piece off, in there,
0:18:30 > 0:18:33you've got to get ten strawberries in 20 seconds.
0:18:33 > 0:18:35Right, this sounds serious.
0:18:35 > 0:18:39I'm going to get the Blue Peter headband on. There we go, I'm ready.
0:18:39 > 0:18:41Ready, steady, go.
0:18:41 > 0:18:43Oh, wow, that's fiddly.
0:18:47 > 0:18:48Oh, that's half a strawberry.
0:18:48 > 0:18:50This is so fiddly.
0:18:50 > 0:18:54Oh, oh, no. Is time running out? I'm getting juice everywhere.
0:18:54 > 0:18:57I'm making a mess. How are you guys so neat?
0:18:59 > 0:19:02- Oh, that was half a strawberry I cut off.- Time up.- No!
0:19:02 > 0:19:04I'm sorry, Lindsey, you've not cut it.
0:19:05 > 0:19:07What? You cannot be serious!
0:19:11 > 0:19:14Yeah, Johnny, I'm really sorry, I think
0:19:14 > 0:19:16the competition got to my head a bit, there.
0:19:16 > 0:19:18Guys, thank you so much, you are obviously so much better
0:19:18 > 0:19:22at this than me. Have a great Wimbledon and see you later.
0:19:24 > 0:19:27Do you know what? I think I'm a lot better at eating these
0:19:27 > 0:19:28than preparing them.
0:19:28 > 0:19:32Now, last year, we launched our Blue Peter Wimbledon Poster Competition.
0:19:32 > 0:19:33Priya was announced as the winner,
