0:00:04 > 0:00:07Today's show is going to be colourful, competitive
0:00:07 > 0:00:09and hypersonic.
0:00:09 > 0:00:13If you want to know more, it's simple. Keep it BP.
0:00:29 > 0:00:33Hello. Welcome to Blue Peter and welcome to Hebden Bridge,
0:00:33 > 0:00:36a town which grew from this very spot more than 500 years ago.
0:00:39 > 0:00:41The town is a hotbed of creativity,
0:00:41 > 0:00:46and it's also home to the handmade parade, a celebration of funkiness
0:00:46 > 0:00:50where puppets, performances and papier-mache take over the streets.
0:00:52 > 0:00:55So if you love Blue Peter makes, you're going to love our time in
0:00:55 > 0:00:57Hebden Bridge, and we couldn't come here without
0:00:57 > 0:00:59showing off all of your fabulous artwork as well.
0:00:59 > 0:01:01Check out the travelling Blue Peter badge wall!
0:01:01 > 0:01:03Doesn't it look great?
0:01:03 > 0:01:06And the work that's on it is of the highest standard ever.
0:01:06 > 0:01:09Holly and Kitty from London have done the Blue Peter ship.
0:01:09 > 0:01:12Now, every single gold pin you can see there is going through
0:01:12 > 0:01:13the middle of a sequin.
0:01:13 > 0:01:16It's a really, really detailed piece of artwork. It's amazing, girls.
0:01:16 > 0:01:18Thank you so much. This, over here, is a lovely pillow.
0:01:18 > 0:01:20It's a small pillow, but still, we like it.
0:01:20 > 0:01:23It's got Blue Peter written on it, and, of course, the Blue Peter ship.
0:01:23 > 0:01:26And that's made by Verity and Catherine from Gloucester.
0:01:26 > 0:01:29But my favourite thing this week - and even though it's pretty warm,
0:01:29 > 0:01:30I'm still going to wear it -
0:01:30 > 0:01:32this has been made by Martha from Retford, and look at it -
0:01:32 > 0:01:35it's a scarf with the three Blue Peter presenters on it.
0:01:35 > 0:01:37There's Lindsey, with the red hair, there's me in the middle with
0:01:37 > 0:01:40hairy eyebrows, and there's Radzi, with the best hair ever.
0:01:40 > 0:01:42It really is such a brilliant badge wall this week.
0:01:42 > 0:01:45Thank you so much to everybody for sending us in your stuff.
0:01:45 > 0:01:47But now we're going to get back to the handmade parade
0:01:47 > 0:01:51and this year there's a brand-new parader in town. Yeah, that's me,
0:01:51 > 0:01:54and last week, I got to help with the preparations.
0:01:56 > 0:01:57This is parade HQ.
0:01:57 > 0:02:00Inside this warehouse, people are getting busy
0:02:00 > 0:02:03and getting creative, making all manner of costumes, props
0:02:03 > 0:02:04and colourful bits
0:02:04 > 0:02:07and pieces ready to parade on the streets of Hebden Bridge.
0:02:07 > 0:02:10There are so many colourful costumes from tigers and hippos
0:02:10 > 0:02:12and foxes and I found a lemon!
0:02:12 > 0:02:15You're not a lemon, are you, Isabel? What are you dressed as?
0:02:15 > 0:02:18- A toucan.- So how did you make the costume? What's it made from?
0:02:18 > 0:02:22Well, it's made from all different types of materials and fabrics.
0:02:22 > 0:02:24Would you mind putting your cardboard head on for us
0:02:24 > 0:02:26so we can see the finished costume?
0:02:26 > 0:02:28Isabel, you look a million dollars!
0:02:28 > 0:02:30And now just give us a big bow towards the camera.
0:02:32 > 0:02:35There you go! See, anything tou can do, I can do better.
0:02:39 > 0:02:41Now, there are lots of things going on over here.
0:02:41 > 0:02:43You've all got different parts that you're making.
0:02:43 > 0:02:46Let's talk to you first. What are you doing?
0:02:46 > 0:02:51- Well, I'm cutting out leaf for this hat.- What's the hat for?
0:02:51 > 0:02:54It's for my head mask.
0:02:54 > 0:02:56OK. You're the monkey in this set-up, yeah?
0:02:56 > 0:02:58Just do us a monkey before you go.
0:02:58 > 0:03:01MAKES MONKEY NOISE
0:03:01 > 0:03:05See that? That's good telly, that, innit? A monkey's hat fell off.
0:03:05 > 0:03:07Excellent. Hopefully that won't happen in the parade.
0:03:07 > 0:03:09As you were, guys, thank you very much.
0:03:09 > 0:03:11I'm going to be embarrassed now!
0:03:11 > 0:03:13They're making lots of creative stuff here and I can't wait
0:03:13 > 0:03:14to see it in the parade,
0:03:14 > 0:03:17but they're not the only creative people hitting the streets,
0:03:17 > 0:03:19as Lindsey found out
0:03:19 > 0:03:22when she went to France to see some very colourful pieces of paper.
0:03:32 > 0:03:34This city is the capital of France
0:03:34 > 0:03:35and is on the banks of the River Seine.
0:03:35 > 0:03:39And it's famous for a lot of things such as the Eiffel Tower...
0:03:40 > 0:03:42..The Arc De Triomphe...
0:03:42 > 0:03:45..And er... Let me think.
0:03:45 > 0:03:48Oh, yeah, croissants! Mmm. Don't mind if I do!
0:03:49 > 0:03:53So what better place to come and check out a bit of street origami?
0:03:54 > 0:03:57Do you know what? I think it's time we brightened things up,
0:03:57 > 0:03:59so I've come to meet Mademoiselle Maurice, who's well-known
0:03:59 > 0:04:03in Paris for her very colourful and impressive street origami.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06The name origami comes from two Japanese words,
0:04:06 > 0:04:08ori and kami.
0:04:08 > 0:04:10Ori means folding, and kami means paper.
0:04:11 > 0:04:14Mademoiselle Maurice has brought origami to the streets,
0:04:14 > 0:04:17installing her paper creations all around the world.
0:04:19 > 0:04:22So what kind of wall do we need? What do you look for?
0:04:22 > 0:04:26I search a wall without windows or without doors.
0:04:26 > 0:04:29- OK, we need, like, a blank canvas, then.- Yeah.
0:04:29 > 0:04:32- You see maybe something like that? - OK, we could do this.
0:04:32 > 0:04:35- Yeah, I think this one, I think... - This works for you?
0:04:35 > 0:04:40Yeah, yeah, I think so. I would like to create something like a heart.
0:04:40 > 0:04:42The first task is a chalk outline of the heart.
0:04:42 > 0:04:44Then it's time to get colourful,
0:04:44 > 0:04:48placing pre-folded origami pieces straight onto the wall.
0:04:48 > 0:04:50Madame Maurice has only just started.
0:04:50 > 0:04:52You can already see it starting to take shape a little bit.
0:04:52 > 0:04:54You can see the outline of the heart.
0:04:54 > 0:04:56Each piece of origami has sticky tape on the back, to keep
0:04:56 > 0:04:58them in place.
0:04:58 > 0:04:59So if you look down there,
0:04:59 > 0:05:01in those little bags that Madame Maurice is using,
0:05:01 > 0:05:04there's all different colours and shapes and sizes of paper,
0:05:04 > 0:05:06and that shows how much thought and preparation
0:05:06 > 0:05:08and how many hours have gone into this.
0:05:12 > 0:05:16I was really enjoying watching her work, and then it got even better.
0:05:16 > 0:05:18- Hey, do you want to stick one?- Yeah!
0:05:18 > 0:05:20I don't want to ruin it, it looks so beautiful.
0:05:20 > 0:05:24- So it needs to be like that? - Yeah, perfect.- There?- Yeah, perfect.
0:05:24 > 0:05:27This collage is, of course, the colours of the rainbow,
0:05:27 > 0:05:30but it's to the spectrum of the light.
0:05:35 > 0:05:39You can even see on a kind of cold, rainy day like this, the walls
0:05:39 > 0:05:41are all grey, and it just really brightens it up, it's really...
0:05:41 > 0:05:46- Yeah, it's to give some warm feelings...- It definitely does.
0:05:46 > 0:05:49It's making me feel warmer and happier, that's for sure.
0:05:50 > 0:05:53- This one will be the last one, if you want to put it in.- OK.
0:05:53 > 0:05:55- So it's a big responsibility? - Yeah, of course.
0:05:55 > 0:05:57I don't want to ruin it at the last minute.
0:05:57 > 0:06:01We've done it! It looks absolutely incredible.
0:06:03 > 0:06:07There you have it, street origami all the way from Paris. Au revoir!
0:06:07 > 0:06:09Au revoir!
0:06:11 > 0:06:13Ah oui!
0:06:13 > 0:06:14Bonjour, Lindsey!
0:06:14 > 0:06:16Yeah, that's about as French as it gets here in Hebden Bridge,
0:06:16 > 0:06:19but in just a couple of days' time, it gets very French,
0:06:19 > 0:06:22because the Tour De France is passing through these very streets.
0:06:22 > 0:06:23The 2014 Grand Depart,
0:06:23 > 0:06:25the start of the world's most famous cycle race is going to
0:06:25 > 0:06:28start in Yorkshire and then pedal its way through these streets.
0:06:28 > 0:06:31Now, as you can see, everyone's getting very excited,
0:06:31 > 0:06:33including the guys at the handmade parade, which last week
0:06:33 > 0:06:35I found out about.
0:06:37 > 0:06:40I love bikes, and the crazier the better,
0:06:40 > 0:06:43and it doesn't get any crazier than this. Not Andrew, the bike.
0:06:43 > 0:06:46- Andrew, what a piece of equipment this is!- Well, thank you very much.
0:06:46 > 0:06:48We took some old bike bits
0:06:48 > 0:06:51and we decided to make a big bicycle puppet
0:06:51 > 0:06:54and then we had a couple of sculptors who took
0:06:54 > 0:06:57some of the bike bits and figured out how to make the wing action
0:06:57 > 0:06:59and the head movement and that kind of thing.
0:06:59 > 0:07:01- The bird actually moves as well? - That's right.
0:07:01 > 0:07:03Well, I think it would be rude not to take this for a spin, Andrew.
0:07:03 > 0:07:06- Are we ready? - Yeah, we are, go for it.- Here we go!
0:07:06 > 0:07:09Whoa, we're flying!
0:07:15 > 0:07:19Look at that! Do you know what? This bike really is a flyer.
0:07:19 > 0:07:21It's a flyer, ha-ha! Because it's a bird.
0:07:21 > 0:07:24OK, now this isn't the first time I've ridden a bonkers bike.
0:07:24 > 0:07:26In fact, back in spring, Radzi, Lindsey
0:07:26 > 0:07:29and myself stepped it up a gear for Sport Relief, and we designed,
0:07:29 > 0:07:33built, and raced our own unique pedal-powered machines.
0:07:33 > 0:07:34Have a look.
0:07:35 > 0:07:37We don't know much about our cycle challenge.
0:07:37 > 0:07:40Only that we need to report to this Manchester warehouse
0:07:40 > 0:07:42to receive instructions.
0:07:42 > 0:07:44"For the Sport Relief cycle challenge,
0:07:44 > 0:07:45"you'll be racing each other.
0:07:45 > 0:07:49"The bad news is you'll have to design and build your own rides."
0:07:49 > 0:07:52"Your pedal-powered vehicles should be impressive on the road,
0:07:52 > 0:07:54"attract lots of attention, and be fun!"
0:07:54 > 0:07:56"Get thinking quickly because in 30 minutes you've got to
0:07:56 > 0:07:59"pitch your designs a panel of experts."
0:08:00 > 0:08:02Go, go, go!
0:08:05 > 0:08:08Our designs had better be good, because in just two weeks' time,
0:08:08 > 0:08:13we'll be lining up on the start line of this cycle track in Preston,
0:08:13 > 0:08:15getting ready to race our creations.
0:08:16 > 0:08:18What could possibly go wrong?
0:08:18 > 0:08:20I'm going to go lightweight, I'm going to go quite high,
0:08:20 > 0:08:22because I don't want to be too low
0:08:22 > 0:08:24because then it's difficult to steer,
0:08:24 > 0:08:25and I'm going to go for speed.
0:08:25 > 0:08:28I just tried to write down everything Barney keeps saying.
0:08:28 > 0:08:30I'm just thinking...
0:08:30 > 0:08:33Judging our designs are a panel of top cycling experts.
0:08:35 > 0:08:37Graeme Obree, nicknamed the Flying Scotsman.
0:08:37 > 0:08:40British cycling Go Ride coach Kim Meadows,
0:08:40 > 0:08:43and Neil Carter is from the British Human Powered Club.
0:08:43 > 0:08:45Let's show 'em what we've got!
0:08:48 > 0:08:50Hi. That's the Shadow GT7 you're looking at.
0:08:50 > 0:08:52Seven because seven is my lucky number.
0:08:52 > 0:08:54This is the Radicator.
0:08:54 > 0:08:56It's called the Lindsmobile.
0:08:56 > 0:09:00I'm thinking gold like the medal I'll be getting.
0:09:00 > 0:09:04I've gone for a single frame that goes over both wheels
0:09:04 > 0:09:06and also houses the pedal unit at the end.
0:09:06 > 0:09:09What would you make it out of?
0:09:09 > 0:09:12I couldn't be sure, Kim. I've never made a bike.
0:09:12 > 0:09:14I've barely ridden on one.
0:09:14 > 0:09:18That's a smaller wheel at the front, larger wheel at the back
0:09:18 > 0:09:22with the flames, and that's me going really, really fast.
0:09:22 > 0:09:25And if it can have a nice cushion on it, that would be great.
0:09:27 > 0:09:29What do the judges really think?
0:09:29 > 0:09:31Do we have a racer on our hands?
0:09:32 > 0:09:34That could be really fast.
0:09:35 > 0:09:37Fast. Yes, I like fast.
0:09:37 > 0:09:39What did they reckon to yours, Linds?
0:09:39 > 0:09:41I would definitely not have back wheel steering
0:09:41 > 0:09:43because it's really difficult to make it work.
0:09:43 > 0:09:45And what do you think about the seat?
0:09:45 > 0:09:48I think I might be inclined to just lay it down a little bit more.
0:09:48 > 0:09:51But that doesn't mean it has to lose personality.
0:09:51 > 0:09:53Hardly glowing praise.
0:09:53 > 0:09:55What did they make of your "design", Radzi?
0:09:55 > 0:09:58Looking where your pedal is on your back wheel,
0:09:58 > 0:10:00the chain is going to go straight through your body.
0:10:00 > 0:10:03- That's a big problem. - And where are your brakes?
0:10:03 > 0:10:05Front wheels, back wheel?
0:10:05 > 0:10:07I hadn't thought about the brakes.
0:10:07 > 0:10:10So there's still work to be done, but the panel are passionate
0:10:10 > 0:10:13about pedal power, and agree to help refine our designs.
0:10:16 > 0:10:20A week later, and at the cycle track in Preston, it's race day.
0:10:20 > 0:10:21But how have the bikes turned out?
0:10:24 > 0:10:27This is the Lindsmobile. Check this out!
0:10:27 > 0:10:30It's got it all, it's bright pink, of course!
0:10:30 > 0:10:31Look at this, it's got flowers on it,
0:10:31 > 0:10:33it's got a little bell down here.
0:10:33 > 0:10:34BELL RINGS
0:10:34 > 0:10:37Maximum comfort. A spotty cushion!
0:10:38 > 0:10:40Not so easy to get going, though.
0:10:42 > 0:10:44Oh, yeah. I think I've got this one in the bag.
0:10:46 > 0:10:48Ah, but you've not seen mine, Lindsey.
0:10:48 > 0:10:50Let me introduce you to the Shadow GT7.
0:10:56 > 0:10:58This bike is fast
0:10:58 > 0:11:02because, unlike Radzi and Lindsey, there are no gimmicks on this bike.
0:11:02 > 0:11:04It's built with the three "S"s in mind.
0:11:04 > 0:11:07It's simple, it's streamlined and it's got speed.
0:11:08 > 0:11:13Yes, the Shadow GT7 might not be that stable, but it is speedy,
0:11:13 > 0:11:15so assuming I can stay on it, I'm going to win this race.
0:11:17 > 0:11:20Easy now, Barney! Yeah. It's the Radicator.
0:11:22 > 0:11:26My mean machine looks the part, but even on race day,
0:11:26 > 0:11:28it's still a work in progress.
0:11:28 > 0:11:31I didn't think about the wheels and the gearing. Erm...
0:11:31 > 0:11:34and the chain, which falls off all the time or the pedals...
0:11:34 > 0:11:36and I can't really turn the pedals...
0:11:36 > 0:11:39It's complicated, but it's gold!
0:11:39 > 0:11:41MUSIC PLAYS: "Gold" by Spandau Ballet.
0:11:41 > 0:11:44- Whoa, hello. - Barney's bike is very wobbly.
0:11:44 > 0:11:46Lindsey's pink thing's, well, a slow mobile.
0:11:46 > 0:11:49So if the Radicator doesn't fall to pieces on the way around,
0:11:49 > 0:11:51I think I'm actually in with half a chance.
0:11:51 > 0:11:54There's only one way we're going to settle this
0:11:54 > 0:11:57and that's on the track.
0:11:57 > 0:12:00Over to our pit lane pundit and friend of CBBC, Oray.
0:12:00 > 0:12:04Three, two, one...
0:12:04 > 0:12:06Go, go, go!
0:12:06 > 0:12:09There's a surprise early lead for the Lindsmobile.
0:12:09 > 0:12:11And a very unsteady start for me.
0:12:12 > 0:12:16But when the Shadow GT7 gets going, it's rapid.
0:12:18 > 0:12:20It's blown away the rest of the field
0:12:20 > 0:12:22That's so casual!
0:12:22 > 0:12:26I might be leading, but I can't shake off the wobbles.
0:12:26 > 0:12:28We might be fighting it out for second place here, Linds!
0:12:28 > 0:12:31I am so far ahead in this race.
0:12:31 > 0:12:34Hang on, it looks like we could have a winner!
0:12:35 > 0:12:39- But it's me! I've snuck through in the lead!- Oh, and he's stopped!
0:12:39 > 0:12:41I can't believe it, Radzi stopped.
0:12:41 > 0:12:43He was celebrating as if he'd won the race!
0:12:43 > 0:12:45No, no, no, no, my chain's come off!
0:12:47 > 0:12:49Lindsey Russell!
0:12:49 > 0:12:52CHEERING
0:12:52 > 0:12:56I've crossed the finish line, but I can't leave my race buddy behind.
0:13:00 > 0:13:03You would not believe the drama that's going on here!
0:13:03 > 0:13:09Barney's gaining on Radzi and crossing the line!
0:13:09 > 0:13:12It's a photo finish, and I've taken it by a wheel-length!
0:13:12 > 0:13:16But there's something not quite right about all this.
0:13:16 > 0:13:18I saw them do the short cut dirty on me.
0:13:18 > 0:13:20Yeah, don't think I didn't spot it.
0:13:20 > 0:13:24- Take the short cut! Down here, do you want me to show you?- Yeah.
0:13:24 > 0:13:26Well, come on! How else were we going to catch you?
0:13:26 > 0:13:29Well, guys, there can only be one winner.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00The Blue Peter sport badge is all about inspiring others to
0:14:00 > 0:14:02take part in sport.
0:14:02 > 0:14:04Maybe you're cricket-crazy, hooked on hockey,
0:14:04 > 0:14:06or fanatical about football.
0:14:06 > 0:14:10Whatever your choice of sport, you could earn a sport badge.
0:14:10 > 0:14:13Between now and September, get a friend involved in your sport.
0:14:13 > 0:14:17Take them golfing, bring them to badminton, it really is up to you.
0:14:17 > 0:14:20But get a picture of you both taking part
0:14:20 > 0:14:23and go to the Blue Peter website and fill in the application form.
0:14:23 > 0:14:27Make sure your parent signs it, and then pop it in the post and wait.
0:14:28 > 0:14:31By applying for your sport badge, you could become one
0:14:31 > 0:14:34of the judges for the Young Sports Personality Of The Year award.
0:14:34 > 0:14:37To get involved, ask your parents or guardian and then tell us
0:14:37 > 0:14:39why you would make a great judge.
0:14:39 > 0:14:43One 2014 sport badge holder will get to sit on the judging panel
0:14:43 > 0:14:45and go to the award ceremony.
0:14:45 > 0:14:49Badge applications are open until the 30th of September, and you have
0:14:49 > 0:14:52to inspire someone this year to be in with a chance of receiving one.
0:14:52 > 0:14:55So go on, be inspiring and get involved.
0:14:55 > 0:14:58So there you have it, lots of really cool inspiration for you to
0:14:58 > 0:15:00get involved and earn your BP sport badge.
0:15:00 > 0:15:03Lots of ways for you to do it, but don't forget you also get the chance
0:15:03 > 0:15:05to actually be on the judging panel
0:15:05 > 0:15:06for Young Sports Personality Of The Year.
0:15:06 > 0:15:08So get those application forms in
0:15:08 > 0:15:10quicker than a cheetah wearing trainers.
0:15:10 > 0:15:12If a cheetah wore trainers, it'd be really fast.
0:15:12 > 0:15:14Steve Backshall would have no chance.
0:15:14 > 0:15:16Anyway, from cheetahs now to elephants.
0:15:16 > 0:15:20It's time for a Blue Peter make. We're not making that, are we?
0:15:20 > 0:15:22It's massive!
0:15:24 > 0:15:29Last week, in parade HQ, I caught up with some elephant experts.
0:15:29 > 0:15:31Today we're going to show you how to make this.
0:15:31 > 0:15:34It's a beautiful elephant headdress that'll brighten up any carnival,
0:15:34 > 0:15:36and it's very easy to make with stuff that you can
0:15:36 > 0:15:39find around the house or stuff you can buy in an art shop.
0:15:39 > 0:15:41This is Fran. Fran is in charge today.
0:15:41 > 0:15:42I'm your beautiful assistant today.
0:15:42 > 0:15:44And we've got Asha, Tallulah, Finn,
0:15:44 > 0:15:46and Rowan over there who are going to help out as well.
0:15:46 > 0:15:49So, how do we get from the basics to the finished product?
0:15:49 > 0:15:53- OK, we need some cardboard boxes. - OK.
0:15:53 > 0:15:56And then you need to collect some decorative bits.
0:15:56 > 0:15:59Usual stuff, glitter, glue, tinsel, anything lying around the house.
0:15:59 > 0:16:01The most important thing, of course, is recycling.
0:16:01 > 0:16:03Use old stuff to make new stuff.
0:16:03 > 0:16:05First up, you need to cut out strips of cardboard that will make
0:16:05 > 0:16:07the head support for your mask.
0:16:07 > 0:16:10I'm just measuring his head and I'm holding the cardboard
0:16:10 > 0:16:13and then I'm just stapling that.
0:16:15 > 0:16:17And then you can tear or cut off the extra bits,
0:16:17 > 0:16:18so that should fit,
0:16:18 > 0:16:21and then I just need an extra little bit that goes up and over the top.
0:16:21 > 0:16:23So that's the headset done. Now what?
0:16:23 > 0:16:28Now we need to do the elephant's head and the ears and the trunk.
0:16:28 > 0:16:31Next, you'll need to use the templates on the website to
0:16:31 > 0:16:34cut out shapes, ready to make the trunk and face in the cardboard.
0:16:34 > 0:16:37So the cardboard here comes from the sort of packing boxes
0:16:37 > 0:16:39you would find in supermarkets, and these are the cereal boxes.
0:16:39 > 0:16:42- Yeah, yeah.- OK.
0:16:42 > 0:16:43So, once you've cut your ear shapes out,
0:16:43 > 0:16:46you need to do one of each side.
0:16:46 > 0:16:48The ears are the easy bit.
0:16:48 > 0:16:49Just cut out their shape
0:16:49 > 0:16:52and then make cuts along each line to make flaps.
0:16:58 > 0:17:01Now, the elephant template, which we're still making,
0:17:01 > 0:17:04does take a bit of time, but once you've made it, it's really quick to
0:17:04 > 0:17:06decorate, so we've done the ears and we've done the head
0:17:06 > 0:17:08and now we're going to make the trunk.
0:17:08 > 0:17:09Cut carefully along the lines
0:17:09 > 0:17:12and then staple the flaps together to make a curve.
0:17:12 > 0:17:15It's easier said than done, but you'll soon get the knack.
0:17:15 > 0:17:17It takes a bit of time, doesn't it?
0:17:17 > 0:17:18That's because I'm rubbish.
0:17:18 > 0:17:22I've never made a trunk before. This is my first trunk.
0:17:22 > 0:17:24That's the tricky bit almost done.
0:17:24 > 0:17:26Last of all is to staple all your pieces together.
0:17:26 > 0:17:28Ears, trunk, and the flat face.
0:17:28 > 0:17:31And you should end up with something that looks a bit like this.
0:17:31 > 0:17:32Here's one I made earlier.
0:17:32 > 0:17:35You've been waiting all day to say that, Fran, I can tell.
0:17:35 > 0:17:37- I have, I have. - OK, let's bring it out, then.
0:17:37 > 0:17:41OK, so once you have made and constructed all your elephant,
0:17:41 > 0:17:44then you can paint the background any colour you want.
0:17:44 > 0:17:46We've painted ours grey.
0:17:46 > 0:17:48But you can paint it a lovely dark blue, bright pink,
0:17:48 > 0:17:49- any colour you fancy.- Yeah.
0:17:49 > 0:17:52And then once you've done that, you decorate it and, girls,
0:17:52 > 0:17:55you've now finished yours. Talk us through what you've decided to do.
0:17:55 > 0:17:58Decided to decorate it with some bright colours and, like,
0:17:58 > 0:18:01fluorescent sticky paper.
0:18:01 > 0:18:03- Yeah. It's very showbiz. Do you like it, Tallulah?- Yeah.
0:18:03 > 0:18:06It's a very pretty elephant. Boys, what about you?
0:18:06 > 0:18:09- What have you gone for?- Just a crazy idea.- Yeah? It's very bright.
0:18:09 > 0:18:13- Spots around the ears, symmetrical. - It's the same on both sides.
0:18:13 > 0:18:16- Almost, but the spots are different colours.- OK, good.
0:18:16 > 0:18:18Well, it looks brilliant, and I think the only thing to do now,
0:18:18 > 0:18:21really, is get them on our heads and show them off, yeah?
0:18:21 > 0:18:23Get the stapler and staple it just to the band,
0:18:23 > 0:18:26so the bottom of the head can be stapled onto the band,
0:18:26 > 0:18:30remembering to allow so that they can see.
0:18:30 > 0:18:34Staple there. How's that? Can we try that on?
0:18:37 > 0:18:40- Hey hey! That looks brilliant! - There we go!- Fantastic.
0:18:40 > 0:18:44MAKES ELEPHANT NOISE
0:18:44 > 0:18:47Do you want to see a doctor or is that an elephant noise you're doing?
0:18:47 > 0:18:48Er... Dunno.
0:18:48 > 0:18:51It's very good, it was a horsey elephant but either way lots of fun.
0:18:51 > 0:18:53You can make that at home really easily with just a few bits
0:18:53 > 0:18:56lying around the house. I'd better get mine as well.
0:18:56 > 0:18:58Let's not forget this. Thank you very much, guys.
0:18:58 > 0:18:59I can't wait to see them in the parade.
0:18:59 > 0:19:02- See you in a bit.- See ya!
0:19:02 > 0:19:05And there's no time like the present to wear this fabulous costume,
0:19:05 > 0:19:08because, just like an elephant, I never forget to look good.
0:19:08 > 0:19:09It could be an advert, couldn't it?
0:19:09 > 0:19:12Being a Blue Peter presenter is just the best job in the world.
0:19:12 > 0:19:14We get to meet some incredible people like you,
0:19:14 > 0:19:17we get to go to some amazing places, and every so often,
0:19:17 > 0:19:19we get to do a once in a lifetime dream.
0:19:19 > 0:19:21And that's what I found out recently
0:19:21 > 0:19:23when I went to the home of British racing, Silverstone.
0:19:23 > 0:19:25I got to be a member of the pit lane crew,
0:19:25 > 0:19:27and got to drive a Formula 1 hypersonic car.
0:19:27 > 0:19:30Excited? Pff! Just a bit.
0:19:33 > 0:19:36So, Silverstone is about to celebrate its 50th Grand Prix
0:19:36 > 0:19:39and the bosses here asked if someone from Blue Peter would
0:19:39 > 0:19:42come along and, you know, test the track for them, make sure it's safe.
0:19:42 > 0:19:46So I said, "Oh, OK, if I have to!"
0:19:46 > 0:19:48I am so excited!
0:19:48 > 0:19:51Formula 1 is one of the biggest sports on the planet,
0:19:51 > 0:19:54and this is where the British heat takes place every year.
0:19:55 > 0:19:58The first Silverstone Grand Prix took place here in 1948,
0:19:58 > 0:20:00and it soon became one of the most iconic
0:20:00 > 0:20:02locations in the world of motor sport.
0:20:03 > 0:20:05Grand Prix is French for grand prize,
0:20:05 > 0:20:08and it's in France the first motor races took place,
0:20:08 > 0:20:10with the craze soon spreading across the world.
0:20:10 > 0:20:13A lot has changed since the first Grand Prix was held here
0:20:13 > 0:20:1466 years ago.
0:20:14 > 0:20:16The track has become more challenging,
0:20:16 > 0:20:19everyone's more safety-conscious, and as for the cars,
0:20:19 > 0:20:21well...
0:20:29 > 0:20:34This is the Lotus 16. An absolute legend in the motor racing world,
0:20:34 > 0:20:35iconic for many reasons.
0:20:35 > 0:20:37One of them is that in 1959,
0:20:37 > 0:20:40this car was driven by another racing legend called Graham Hill.
0:20:40 > 0:20:44The difference between cars now and then is that this has
0:20:44 > 0:20:47an engine in the front, whereas cars now have an engine in the back.
0:20:47 > 0:20:49Isn't it beautiful?
0:20:52 > 0:20:53And then there are these.
0:20:53 > 0:20:58The modern racing cars being driven by today's Formula 1 champions.
0:20:58 > 0:21:00Amongst the most technologically advanced cars on the planet,
0:21:00 > 0:21:03they can reach speeds of around 240mph, which is
0:21:03 > 0:21:09over 1,400 faster than Shelley the tortoise.
0:21:12 > 0:21:15The pit lane is essential to every team's success.
0:21:15 > 0:21:17How quick a team can change the tyres
0:21:17 > 0:21:19and fuel on their car can win or lose a race.
0:21:19 > 0:21:23This is Wayne, a technician experienced in the pressures
0:21:23 > 0:21:24of working in this environment.
0:21:24 > 0:21:26This is obviously not a Formula 1 car,
0:21:26 > 0:21:29- but the principles are the same, aren't they?- Yeah, of course.
0:21:29 > 0:21:32I mean, this has four nuts. Formula 1 car's only got one.
0:21:32 > 0:21:34How important is it to get into the pit lane, have the
0:21:34 > 0:21:37tyres changed, and then set off again very quickly?
0:21:37 > 0:21:38Oh, yeah, really quick.
0:21:38 > 0:21:40The car needs to come in, all four wheels off, on,
0:21:40 > 0:21:42and gone, so they don't lose as much time.
0:21:42 > 0:21:45Because they're racing and every second counts, doesn't it?
0:21:45 > 0:21:48- Yeah.- OK, so what is the fastest time tyres have been changed?
0:21:48 > 0:21:51I think one of the Formula 1 teams did it in 1.92 seconds.
0:21:53 > 0:21:55OK, well, we're not going to go for that today.
0:21:55 > 0:21:57Well, we'll get as close as we can.
0:21:59 > 0:22:01So the Blue Peter challenge was on.
0:22:03 > 0:22:06Who could change a racing car tyre in the fastest time?
0:22:41 > 0:22:44So I've checked out the classic cars. Loved them, they were amazing.
0:22:44 > 0:22:46I've had a go in the pit lanes, know all about that,
0:22:46 > 0:22:49so I think now it's time to do what I came here to do.
0:22:49 > 0:22:51Race this bad boy.
0:22:51 > 0:22:53Not quite so quick, Barney.
0:22:53 > 0:22:56We need to teach you a few more things before you get in this car
0:22:56 > 0:22:57out on the race track.
0:22:57 > 0:23:00Hello, Susie Wolff! Are you teaching me today?
0:23:00 > 0:23:02- I am your teacher for the day. - Oh, that's going to be amazing.
0:23:02 > 0:23:03Do you know why?
0:23:03 > 0:23:06Watch this.
0:23:06 > 0:23:08Susie Wolff is a legend in modern racing.
0:23:08 > 0:23:12At just 14, she was named British Woman Cart Driver Of The Year
0:23:12 > 0:23:15and has progressed up the ranks to being an F1 development driver
0:23:15 > 0:23:16for the Williams racing team.
0:23:16 > 0:23:19When it comes to driving an F1 car,
0:23:19 > 0:23:22there's nothing that Susie doesn't know.
0:23:22 > 0:23:25So, first things first. I had to undergo a safety briefing.
0:23:25 > 0:23:30The general nature of it is very fast, open corners,
0:23:30 > 0:23:34so on any of the straights it's easy in the single-seater car to
0:23:34 > 0:23:36be doing well over 100mph.
0:23:37 > 0:23:39Susie, I've had the briefing, I think I know what's going on.
0:23:39 > 0:23:42I understand all the lights and the flags, etc,
0:23:42 > 0:23:43so now can I go on the track?
0:23:43 > 0:23:45Now we're ready to go on the track,
0:23:45 > 0:23:48but we need to get you used to the track, to learn it,
0:23:48 > 0:23:50to get the feeling of going fast on a race track.
0:23:50 > 0:23:52So we're going to go out in one of these cars, first of all.
0:23:52 > 0:23:54Oh, OK.
0:23:54 > 0:23:56Taking the kerb off the brakes
0:23:56 > 0:23:59- and back on power.- There was so much to remember!
0:23:59 > 0:24:02Breaking, breaking, breaking, into the apex. Perfect!
0:24:02 > 0:24:06- A natural talent we have here!- Yes!
0:24:06 > 0:24:09- How much fun is this? - It's good, isn't it?
0:24:10 > 0:24:12So I know the track quite well.
0:24:12 > 0:24:15I've driven round it and I've had the briefing,
0:24:15 > 0:24:18so surely it's just my turn to jump in a car and go.
0:24:18 > 0:24:20Not quite yet because I want you to know what it's like to go
0:24:20 > 0:24:22fast out on a race track, so first of all,
0:24:22 > 0:24:24we're going to go out in the hypersonic.
0:24:24 > 0:24:27I'm going to drive you round, let you get used to the sensation,
0:24:27 > 0:24:29the speed, and being out on track in a single-seater.
0:24:29 > 0:24:31And then you get to go.
0:24:31 > 0:24:34OK.
0:24:34 > 0:24:36It's about as close as you can get to experiencing
0:24:36 > 0:24:38the speed of an F1 car.
0:24:38 > 0:24:41That already feels ridiculously fast
0:24:41 > 0:24:45and we're only just leaving the pit lane. This is silly fast!
0:24:48 > 0:24:50Even when we're going slow round these corners,
0:24:50 > 0:24:52we're still doing 70mph,
0:24:53 > 0:24:56which is as fast as you would go on the motorway.
0:24:57 > 0:25:00So you can imagine how fast we're going
0:25:00 > 0:25:02when we're on a straight line.
0:25:02 > 0:25:05It can go from 0-60mph in just three seconds.
0:25:07 > 0:25:09Woo-hoo!
0:25:10 > 0:25:13Susie, I've had the briefing, you've taught me the course,
0:25:13 > 0:25:16and I've driven around in a hypersonic car with you.
0:25:16 > 0:25:18Now can I ride around the track on my own?
0:25:18 > 0:25:21- Barney, you're ready.- Yes!
0:25:21 > 0:25:23So excited!
0:25:24 > 0:25:27Finally I was off, and this time I was by myself.
0:25:28 > 0:25:32Wow, that's amazing! It is such an amazing car.
0:25:32 > 0:25:36Oh, yeah, it's incredible. The car is so responsive.
0:25:36 > 0:25:38Every little thing I'm doing is making a huge difference,
0:25:38 > 0:25:41which I knew it would.
0:25:41 > 0:25:45Braking a straight line. Into third.
0:25:45 > 0:25:47Round the corner.
0:25:47 > 0:25:49Accelerate smoothly.
0:25:49 > 0:25:52Oh, I've got to get me one of these!
0:25:52 > 0:25:53Turn in half.
0:25:53 > 0:25:57Accelerate out! Oh, yes! Feel that one!
0:25:58 > 0:26:02Never mind wing-walking. Never mind bungee jumping. I want one of these!
0:26:02 > 0:26:04This place has changed a lot over the years.
0:26:04 > 0:26:09But it's still such an iconic venue for anyone who loves motor sport.
0:26:09 > 0:26:11Imagine what it must be like to win here.
0:26:19 > 0:26:21Oh, hi, thank you. Is that water?
0:26:21 > 0:26:23- Fizzy water.- Perfect!
0:26:31 > 0:26:32Sorry.
0:26:34 > 0:26:36Can you see the smile on my face? Yeah. I want one.
