6:30:33 > 6:30:36- Hello!- Hello.- It's a great shot, camera three. How are you doing?

6:30:36 > 6:30:39- Welcome to Blue Peter. - I like when you're tiny little men.

6:30:39 > 6:30:40- Do you?- Yeah!

6:30:40 > 6:30:42OK.

6:30:42 > 6:30:43So, yeah... Hi, how are you?

6:30:43 > 6:30:46It's a live show, as you can tell already. It's already on its way.

6:30:46 > 6:30:48We want to say thank you to Emily,

6:30:48 > 6:30:50- who is this lovely person with the thumbs up.- Aw!- Aw!

6:30:50 > 6:30:53Emily designed the set that we were stood in a minute ago.

6:30:53 > 6:30:56Emily, it's amazing, thank you so much.

6:30:56 > 6:30:58Now, someone else is getting creative.

6:30:58 > 6:31:00- Have a look at this lovely person. - Yeah.

6:31:00 > 6:31:04Hi, I'm Millie and I love making things.

6:31:04 > 6:31:09I've even made this massive Blue Peter badge out of pom-poms.

6:31:09 > 6:31:15It has 100 million pom-poms on it and it took me two days to make.

6:31:15 > 6:31:17- Two days, great effort, Millie. - That's a good effort.

6:31:17 > 6:31:19Now, here's Freddie.

6:31:19 > 6:31:23Hi, my name's Freddie. I can't have dairy so I make my own treats.

6:31:23 > 6:31:26They are some delicious dairy-free cakes.

6:31:28 > 6:31:31That was beautifully shot as well. We like that a lot.

6:31:31 > 6:31:33As well as that, we're joined in the studio

6:31:33 > 6:31:35by the wonderful artist Jon Burgerman.

6:31:35 > 6:31:38He's here to make some lovely egg splats. There's one there.

6:31:38 > 6:31:40They're a great Easter prank!

6:31:42 > 6:31:44Later, I'll be testing my cake-decorating skills

6:31:44 > 6:31:48in a cake-decorating competition. Watch that, it's going to be good.

6:31:48 > 6:31:50But, of course, today's show is so creative,

6:31:50 > 6:31:52so we want to hear from you. It's live.

6:31:52 > 6:31:54We want to know if we could make or bake anything,

6:31:54 > 6:31:58- absolutely anything, on the show, what would it be and why?- Why!

6:31:58 > 6:31:59That's right. Head to the website,

6:31:59 > 6:32:02leave a comment and we'll try and read out as many as we can

6:32:02 > 6:32:04at the end of the show.

6:32:04 > 6:32:07- Poop! That's what I'd make.- What? Radzi, what?- I'm actually

6:32:07 > 6:32:10being serious. We're going to show you how to make an edible emoji.

6:32:10 > 6:32:12We know you love emojis and we know you kind of love going to the

6:32:12 > 6:32:15- toilet.- The living poo!- So we're going to make an edible version.

6:32:15 > 6:32:17We're also going to make these emojis that are lollipops.

6:32:17 > 6:32:20They're very exciting. I like the guy with sunglasses.

6:32:20 > 6:32:22- Radzi, shall we do this? - Absolutely.- Walk this way.- Bye!

6:32:22 > 6:32:24- See you later, Linz.- See ya. - Now, these might look a little bit

6:32:24 > 6:32:27- disgusting but I can assure you they're very tasty.- We're not

6:32:27 > 6:32:29talking about these three people, we're talking about what he's

6:32:29 > 6:32:32making. Hi, guys, high fives. We're doing backwards ones now. Hi, Em.

6:32:32 > 6:32:35Hi, Ethan. And, Maha, good to see you here in the studio.

6:32:35 > 6:32:37You are our experts today, which is good to know.

6:32:37 > 6:32:38Maha, what have you made?

6:32:38 > 6:32:40- What have you brought with you? - Chocolate cupcakes.

6:32:40 > 6:32:42Look at those chocolate cupcakes!

6:32:42 > 6:32:45By the way, they're not going home with you.

6:32:45 > 6:32:47- Emma, what have you made? - Chocolate brownies.

6:32:47 > 6:32:49Have you actually made those? They look really good.

6:32:49 > 6:32:51Are they really tasty? Are we allowed to eat these or...?

6:32:51 > 6:32:53We haven't been doing that so far. Can we eat them? No? OK.

6:32:53 > 6:32:55And, Ethan, what have you made?

6:32:55 > 6:32:57I've made a Victoria sponge cake.

6:32:57 > 6:32:59It's beautiful. Thank you so much for being here. You are our experts

6:32:59 > 6:33:02and you're going to be decorating your emoji faces.

6:33:02 > 6:33:04Well, it's now time to make some poop!

6:33:04 > 6:33:06And all you need is the following...

6:33:16 > 6:33:18And that is all you need.

6:33:18 > 6:33:20Large amount of melted chocolate, just eat what you don't use.

6:33:20 > 6:33:22The more the better, my friends.

6:33:22 > 6:33:24The very first thing I've done is I've preheated this bad boy

6:33:24 > 6:33:28to 180 degrees and then it comes to the actual making part.

6:33:28 > 6:33:31So I take this paste, which is melted chocolate chips,

6:33:31 > 6:33:34melted butter and I've added some condensed milk.

6:33:34 > 6:33:37You can see this is a very nice, smooth paste,

6:33:37 > 6:33:40but to make it poopy we need some flour.

6:33:40 > 6:33:44So this is where we add a little bit of flour.

6:33:44 > 6:33:45I'll be honest,

6:33:45 > 6:33:49I don't know exactly how much flour you need to make the perfect

6:33:49 > 6:33:53mixture, so do it until you get it about the same as modelling clay.

6:33:53 > 6:33:55You'll have a lot more than myself.

6:33:55 > 6:33:58Once you've gone through as much flour as you deem appropriate,

6:33:58 > 6:34:02you have a dollop, which will look like this here.

6:34:02 > 6:34:05I should warn you that if you're eating right now,

6:34:05 > 6:34:09now's a good time to probably stop eating. I'm going to take out this.

6:34:09 > 6:34:11This is actually a crumbly one, just so you know.

6:34:11 > 6:34:13Just a little bit of advanced warning.

6:34:13 > 6:34:16I'm going to now roll this into a little sausage here.

6:34:16 > 6:34:18This is my favourite thing you've done for ages.

6:34:18 > 6:34:21- Is that a brownie?- No! - Is that...? Is that...?

6:34:21 > 6:34:24What do you think, guys? What do you think of his thing that he's making?

6:34:24 > 6:34:26- It's good.- It's good, isn't it? - Yeah.- Thank you very much.

6:34:26 > 6:34:29Do you think it looks pooey enough?

6:34:29 > 6:34:30- Yeah.- Yeah.- Good! Good!

6:34:30 > 6:34:32Got the seal of approval.

6:34:32 > 6:34:34So you've got a rough sort of sausagey roll...

6:34:34 > 6:34:36I've actually put a bit too much flour on this one.

6:34:36 > 6:34:40And I'm now going to try and roll this into the aforementioned shape.

6:34:40 > 6:34:45So here we have... Not the best but it's sort of there.

6:34:45 > 6:34:47You've done that so much better every time so far.

6:34:47 > 6:34:49I know! And it's all messed up.

6:34:49 > 6:34:51But fortunately these are much better than my versions.

6:34:51 > 6:34:53I'll take that, plonk it there,

6:34:53 > 6:34:55and then I will simply place it into the oven.

6:34:55 > 6:34:58Fortunately, the oven is actually warm, it's not hot, otherwise

6:34:58 > 6:35:00I'd have hurt my fingers at that point.

6:35:00 > 6:35:03But fear not, my friends, I survived with my asbestos fingers.

6:35:03 > 6:35:06The finished product, as you can see, is just here.

6:35:06 > 6:35:09And all I've done is added the eyes and the smile. They'll be

6:35:09 > 6:35:12in the oven for eight minutes. This is now cooled down beautifully

6:35:12 > 6:35:15and that makes your face emoji. Barney, what have you got?

6:35:15 > 6:35:17Beautifully done, sir. Thank you very much.

6:35:17 > 6:35:20We're going to make some emoji smiling faces.

6:35:20 > 6:35:23Now, you have to use round biscuits and you have to use round biscuits

6:35:23 > 6:35:26that have got the custard filling in them because that's how you stick

6:35:26 > 6:35:29your lollipop in. So, very carefully you pull apart your biscuit

6:35:29 > 6:35:31so you've got two halves.

6:35:31 > 6:35:34Now, we have a mixture of white chocolate and yellow food colouring.

6:35:34 > 6:35:37The white chocolate's been melted to make, like, a sort of a sauce.

6:35:37 > 6:35:39Any kind of chocolate will do the job but obviously the yellow

6:35:39 > 6:35:42food colouring goes well with white to make it an emoji colour.

6:35:42 > 6:35:46We've melted that. We've now made what is effectively a bit of glue.

6:35:46 > 6:35:49We also need some lollipop sticks, which are here somewhere.

6:35:49 > 6:35:51By the way, guys, you're doing a fab job.

6:35:51 > 6:35:53A really good job. Oh, that's amazing.

6:35:53 > 6:35:56We'll come to that in a minute. So, you've got your lemon

6:35:56 > 6:35:59and white chocolate mix.

6:35:59 > 6:36:01You place it into the middle of your biscuit and press it through

6:36:01 > 6:36:04the creamy filling. And then you want to add a little tiny bit -

6:36:04 > 6:36:07not too much because you don't want it to squirt out from the sides

6:36:07 > 6:36:09here, just a little bit, so that when that chocolate sets,

6:36:09 > 6:36:11it'll actually hold the biscuit together.

6:36:11 > 6:36:15Then what you do is you put that biscuit onto a tray into a fridge.

6:36:15 > 6:36:17- Leave it there for about eight minutes.- Delicious.

6:36:17 > 6:36:19And it will come out looking like one of these.

6:36:19 > 6:36:22The reason you put it in the fridge is because you want the

6:36:22 > 6:36:24chocolate to set, because if you try and do this too soon,

6:36:24 > 6:36:27this next part will go wrong because this will just drop off

6:36:27 > 6:36:29into your mix. Guys, how you getting on over there?

6:36:29 > 6:36:31You're decorating at the moment, you're well ahead of me.

6:36:31 > 6:36:35- Ethan, talk to me. - I've made a cry face.

6:36:35 > 6:36:37- A crying face!- Aw! That's good.

6:36:37 > 6:36:40- You're having a good time, though, right?- Yeah.- OK, good to know.

6:36:40 > 6:36:41Em, how about you?

6:36:41 > 6:36:43I've done an embarrassed face.

6:36:43 > 6:36:46- Yes!- Amazing, rosy cheeks, nice 3-D eyes as well.

6:36:46 > 6:36:48Maha, what have you done?

6:36:48 > 6:36:49I've done a geek face.

6:36:49 > 6:36:51- Nice!- Very cool.

6:36:51 > 6:36:53Well, they've achieved that look by doing exactly what I'm doing

6:36:53 > 6:36:55as part of the process.

6:36:55 > 6:36:58You cover your biscuit lollipop in the white chocolate and yellow food

6:36:58 > 6:37:01colouring and you stick it onto a baking tray that's lined with

6:37:01 > 6:37:03paper and that then goes into the fridge. Once you've done that -

6:37:03 > 6:37:05these have already been in the fridge - you're ready for

6:37:05 > 6:37:08decorating. And you can decorate it with anything you like.

6:37:08 > 6:37:11I'm going to go for sunglasses and a smiley face. All the details

6:37:11 > 6:37:13you need for this make are on the Blue Peter website.

6:37:13 > 6:37:15Head over there and check it out, people!

6:37:15 > 6:37:17Now, I think we've worked really hard today, guys.

6:37:17 > 6:37:19I think it's time for a treat.

6:37:19 > 6:37:20- Yeah!- Radzi, there you go.

6:37:20 > 6:37:23- I'm only kidding, it's the film that's the treat.- Ah!

6:37:25 > 6:37:28I've come to Birmingham to make a film about one of my

6:37:28 > 6:37:30favourite things in the world...

6:37:30 > 6:37:32cake!

6:37:32 > 6:37:36Although, to be honest, I don't think I'm in the right place.

6:37:37 > 6:37:40I mean, don't get me wrong, these models are absolutely amazing but

6:37:40 > 6:37:42it's no Swiss roll, is it?

6:37:42 > 6:37:44Where's the sponge?

6:37:46 > 6:37:48Well, I have to say, I'm a little bit embarrassed, guys.

6:37:48 > 6:37:50We've got no film today, we can't do anything, there's no cake here.

6:37:50 > 6:37:52I thought there was cake.

6:37:52 > 6:37:53But there isn't, so...

6:37:53 > 6:37:57film's off. Sorry, I've let you down there, haven't I? Hey...

6:37:57 > 6:38:01Oh, yes, that is what I'm talking about! Let's do this.

6:38:02 > 6:38:04Oh, yeah! I knew there was cake here.

6:38:06 > 6:38:09Believe it or not, these are all cakes.

6:38:09 > 6:38:11Seriously, how do they do this?

6:38:11 > 6:38:15This is Cake International, the UK's biggest cake-decorating show.

6:38:15 > 6:38:17I mean, just look at it.

6:38:17 > 6:38:19That's a cake.

6:38:19 > 6:38:22But I'm not here to drool over delicious cakes,

6:38:22 > 6:38:24I'm taking part in a challenge.

6:38:24 > 6:38:27I have to create a Blue Peter pet out of cake,

6:38:27 > 6:38:29which will then be judged against other top designers' efforts

6:38:29 > 6:38:33on a special BP competition stand.

6:38:33 > 6:38:36So I think it's fair to say I'm going to need some serious help.

6:38:37 > 6:38:41Meet Molly Robbins, an award-winning cake-decorating artist

6:38:41 > 6:38:43and my mentor for this challenge.

6:38:45 > 6:38:46OK, what are we doing?

6:38:46 > 6:38:48We're making Shelley the tortoise.

6:38:48 > 6:38:51That's right, our Shelley is about to be lovingly recreated

6:38:51 > 6:38:53in cake form.

6:38:53 > 6:38:55But where do we start?

6:38:55 > 6:38:56That's going to be her shell.

6:38:56 > 6:38:58- OK.- And then we're going to put the head on and the feet.

6:38:58 > 6:39:01So first job is we've got to get the shape.

6:39:01 > 6:39:03So we're making a tortoise shape.

6:39:03 > 6:39:05- Yeah.- Like an egg shape almost.

6:39:05 > 6:39:09'By trimming off little pieces, we start to create Shelley's shape.

6:39:09 > 6:39:11'But cut away too much and it's game over.'

6:39:11 > 6:39:14- That is a good Shelley shape. - Yeah, it looks good.

6:39:14 > 6:39:17'Next, we cover our cake with buttercream.'

6:39:17 > 6:39:19So this is going to fill in all the cracks and get it nice and

6:39:19 > 6:39:22- smooth for the icing. - It's a bit like plastering a house.

6:39:22 > 6:39:25You put quite a lot on but there's no way I could make it look anywhere

6:39:25 > 6:39:28near as smooth as Molly is.

6:39:28 > 6:39:31'When the buttercream's added, it's time to roll out the icing.'

6:39:31 > 6:39:33Just like that.

6:39:33 > 6:39:35'And after we've got the icing as smooth as possible,

6:39:35 > 6:39:38'we can also use it to make Shelley's head and feet.'

6:39:38 > 6:39:41- So are you going to make a foot? - I'm going to make a foot and you're

6:39:41 > 6:39:42going to make Shelley's head.

6:39:42 > 6:39:45'This is where Molly's incredible skills come into their own.

6:39:45 > 6:39:47'She really is awesome.

6:39:47 > 6:39:50'By adding small amounts of texture to the icing,

6:39:50 > 6:39:52'Shelley really starts to take shape.'

6:39:54 > 6:39:56It's amazing how adding just tiny little details

6:39:56 > 6:39:59- makes a huge difference.- She's looking pretty real, I think.- Yeah.

6:39:59 > 6:40:03- Yeah.- She's getting there. We just need to put some colour on now.

6:40:03 > 6:40:04I've got some food colouring

6:40:04 > 6:40:06and I've just watered it down a little bit.

6:40:11 > 6:40:13- That's looking really good.- Well, I've been taught by the best, Moll.

6:40:13 > 6:40:17As you can see, we've got quite a way to go here finishing the detail

6:40:17 > 6:40:19on Shelley. So for now, if you leave us to it,

6:40:19 > 6:40:22we'll get on with this and we'll see you soon at the cake show.

6:40:25 > 6:40:28It's competition day and our Blue Peter stand is all set up

6:40:28 > 6:40:32with a host of previous Blue Peter pets made by some top designers.

6:40:32 > 6:40:35There's Petra, Kari and Oke,

6:40:35 > 6:40:38Shep, Mabel, good old Iggy

6:40:38 > 6:40:40and, of course, our Shelley.

6:40:40 > 6:40:42- How are you feeling, Moll? - I'm feeling good.

6:40:42 > 6:40:43Shelley's looking really good.

6:40:43 > 6:40:45But how's she going to do in the competition?

6:40:45 > 6:40:47We're going to have to find out.

6:40:47 > 6:40:50We are, yes, by getting in our elite team of judges. Cue the slow-mo.

6:40:52 > 6:40:54We've put together a top team of BP fans to decide

6:40:54 > 6:40:59which cake is number one and they are led by head judge Sally.

6:40:59 > 6:41:02You are my lead judges.

6:41:02 > 6:41:06It's time for us to choose the top three.

6:41:06 > 6:41:12We need to look really closely at proportion, texturing and colouring.

6:41:12 > 6:41:15We'll be watching the judges from backstage and, by the way,

6:41:15 > 6:41:18they've no idea which cake is ours.

6:41:18 > 6:41:19All right, here we go.

6:41:21 > 6:41:23So, what do you think of this one?

6:41:23 > 6:41:27I like the texture because it looks, like, real and inside the mouth,

6:41:27 > 6:41:30it looks really black, like how a dog's mouth would be.

6:41:30 > 6:41:32Yes, because it's all shiny, isn't it?

6:41:32 > 6:41:36I like how the eyes are kind of different colours

6:41:36 > 6:41:38- and the detail in them.- Yes.

6:41:38 > 6:41:42And I like how the fur's rough so it looks like proper fur.

6:41:42 > 6:41:45And the character, one ear up and one ear down.

6:41:45 > 6:41:48- Yeah, it's quite happy. - Yes, just like Mabel.

6:41:48 > 6:41:50OK, good comments so far about the big cakes,

6:41:50 > 6:41:52but it's the littlest cake there

6:41:52 > 6:41:55- that we want to get the biggest reaction for, don't we?- Yeah.

6:41:55 > 6:41:59But will our carefully constructed Shelley impress the judges?

6:41:59 > 6:42:01I like it. That's all the same shape.

6:42:01 > 6:42:04- That's exactly how Shelley actually looks, isn't it?- Yeah.

6:42:04 > 6:42:07- That's actually really cool.- Yeah. - They're talking about it a lot.

6:42:07 > 6:42:09This is going well. This is going really well.

6:42:09 > 6:42:11I like how they've done different things to the paws

6:42:11 > 6:42:13and the head because the head's got dots.

6:42:13 > 6:42:16That's different, isn't it, all the way round the edge?

6:42:16 > 6:42:18Yeah, I think it's really good.

6:42:18 > 6:42:21After lots and lots of cake critiquing,

6:42:21 > 6:42:24our young judges are ready to announce their top three.

6:42:24 > 6:42:27- OK, they're ready. Shall we go?- Yes, I'm so excited.- All right, then.

6:42:27 > 6:42:30Follow me.

6:42:30 > 6:42:33- Hi, guys, how are you? - Hi, we're good, thank you.- Good.

6:42:33 > 6:42:36- Molly, it's time for the results. - Hi, guys!

6:42:36 > 6:42:40- Hi, judges, good to see you all. - So, in third place, we have Shep.

6:42:40 > 6:42:44That's right. In second place,

6:42:44 > 6:42:47- we have Kari and Oke.- OK.

6:42:47 > 6:42:51'So, Shelley is still in with a chance. Fingers crossed.'

6:42:51 > 6:42:53First place - who is it?

6:42:53 > 6:42:55- ALL:- Shelley!

6:42:55 > 6:42:57- Yes!- Amazing!- BOTH:- Well done.

6:42:57 > 6:42:59'I cannot believe it!

6:42:59 > 6:43:02'The judges loved the texture and detail that helped make

6:43:02 > 6:43:05'Shelley look super-realistic, but, let's be honest,

6:43:05 > 6:43:08'there's no way I could have done it without Molly's amazing skills.'

6:43:08 > 6:43:10It's been a really interesting journey,

6:43:10 > 6:43:13not just being here and making the cake with Molly,

6:43:13 > 6:43:15but then entering it into a competition as well and to actually

6:43:15 > 6:43:18come away as the winner, well, that's just the icing on the cake.

6:43:19 > 6:43:22Yeah, always finish on a strong joke, Barney. Good.

6:43:24 > 6:43:27Bad joke! See, Shelley is always a winner in my eyes.

6:43:27 > 6:43:29She's a little legend and here she is now.

6:43:29 > 6:43:31This is the finished Shelley cake.

6:43:31 > 6:43:33- Barney, can I have a bit?- Nope.

6:43:34 > 6:43:36OK. Thanks, Barney. Maybe later in the show.

6:43:36 > 6:43:38I am definitely going to steal some.

6:43:38 > 6:43:39In the meantime, please welcome

6:43:39 > 6:43:41the amazingly talented artist Jon Burgerman.

6:43:41 > 6:43:44- Hello, hello, hello!- Hello, Jon. - How are you doing?

6:43:44 > 6:43:47- Welcome to Blue Peter or should I say welcome back?- Oh, thanks.

6:43:47 > 6:43:50Because you've been on before, haven't you, a few years ago?

6:43:50 > 6:43:52- A little while ago, yeah. - It was nine years, Jon.

6:43:52 > 6:43:55- Time flies, doesn't it? - It certainly does.

6:43:55 > 6:43:57We've actually got some footage of back when you were on Blue Peter.

6:43:57 > 6:44:02This is 2008 and you made us this amazing kind of mural

6:44:02 > 6:44:04for the Blue Peter 50th birthday, didn't you?

6:44:04 > 6:44:07Yeah, it was a lot of fun. I did a big doodle for you guys.

6:44:07 > 6:44:10And we've got it here now from the Blue Peter archives,

6:44:10 > 6:44:12- which is really special.- Or skip.

6:44:12 > 6:44:16No, archives - we really look after our Blue Peter makes and bakes.

6:44:16 > 6:44:18So, what have you been up to since then?

6:44:18 > 6:44:22- Doodling, maybe?- Just maybe drawing. - Yeah.

6:44:22 > 6:44:23No, come on, you've been up to a bit more than that.

6:44:23 > 6:44:26- I made a book which came out today. - That's right

6:44:26 > 6:44:27and it's called Splat!,

6:44:27 > 6:44:29- which we love.- Splat, yes. - Now, this inspired a make

6:44:29 > 6:44:32we're going to be doing later on. It is so good, isn't it?

6:44:32 > 6:44:35Yeah, it's a make involving eggs and splatting

6:44:35 > 6:44:37so it's perfect for the Easter holidays.

6:44:37 > 6:44:40Well, I can't wait to get involved later and, of course, on Blue Peter,

6:44:40 > 6:44:42we love getting creative, but we are not the only ones.

6:44:42 > 6:44:46Jon, you are going to love this. Have a look at what Lucia did.

6:44:46 > 6:44:50Hi, I'm Lucia and I love Blue Peter and all the makes on the show.

6:44:50 > 6:44:55I made this bunting using wooden sticks, stickers, pom-poms,

6:44:55 > 6:44:57buttons and other crafty things.

6:44:57 > 6:45:00I hope you like it.

6:45:00 > 6:45:03- We love it!- We love it! It's so good. Come on over, Jon.

6:45:03 > 6:45:06Now, we can't have a make and bake show without displaying

6:45:06 > 6:45:09- your makes and bakes.- Are you still eating some of the bakes?

6:45:09 > 6:45:11These brownies are amazing. So, let's take a look at Lily's pasty.

6:45:11 > 6:45:14It's a felt pasty, inspired by the competition

6:45:14 > 6:45:15I was part of a few weeks ago.

6:45:15 > 6:45:17Look at that - myself, Radzi and Lynsey on the outside.

6:45:17 > 6:45:21She's even put the words "yum-yum" on there. Lily, badge - it's yours.

6:45:21 > 6:45:23- Thank you very much.- You can't eat that one, Barney, it's made of felt.

6:45:23 > 6:45:25You can eat that, carry on with that.

6:45:25 > 6:45:27Harry's been very busy as well, have a look.

6:45:27 > 6:45:30Hello, my name's Harry and I love Blue Peter

6:45:30 > 6:45:32and all the makes they do on the show.

6:45:32 > 6:45:34I love making stuff myself, especially sewing things.

6:45:34 > 6:45:37I sewed these three felt dolls of the Blue Peter presenters

6:45:37 > 6:45:39Barney, Lynsey and Radzi. I hope you like them.

6:45:39 > 6:45:43- Yay, we love that. Stop eating the felt pasty.- You can't eat that one.

6:45:43 > 6:45:45You're so good at presenting, by the way, you lovely lot.

6:45:45 > 6:45:47And now here's Nye.

6:45:47 > 6:45:50My name is Nye. This is my egg box Shelley.

6:45:50 > 6:45:56She's made out of a sock, an egg box and toilet rolls and paint

6:45:56 > 6:45:58and glitter and I made it

6:45:58 > 6:46:01because I like how tortoises are very, very slow.

6:46:01 > 6:46:03It's a good point. Well done, Nye.

6:46:03 > 6:46:06I think Nye should be the new Blue Peter presenter. What do you reckon?

6:46:06 > 6:46:08- Agreed.- We'll have a word with the bosses.

6:46:08 > 6:46:09Jon, what have you found?

6:46:09 > 6:46:12I like this piece by Oliver, who's aged seven and from Lancashire.

6:46:12 > 6:46:15- He's made the Blue Peter boat out of solid silver.- Wow!

6:46:15 > 6:46:18- That's not an easy shape, is it? - No, it's a lot of silver.

6:46:18 > 6:46:20As an artist, you know these things.

6:46:20 > 6:46:23Please keep your makes, bakes, post, anything coming in to us.

6:46:23 > 6:46:26The address you need is right there and, remember,

6:46:26 > 6:46:27it's Easter holiday time, people,

6:46:27 > 6:46:31and your badge can get you into over 200 attractions across the UK...

6:46:31 > 6:46:33# For free! #

6:46:33 > 6:46:35- Jon, where were you with the harmony?- Beautiful...

6:46:35 > 6:46:36All the details are on the website.

6:46:36 > 6:46:39Do you reckon that Oliver's made that boat because he's a pirate

6:46:39 > 6:46:42- and he had lots of access to silver? Maybe that's what it is.- Maybe.

6:46:42 > 6:46:44I think Thomas might be the same because Thomas has requested

6:46:44 > 6:46:46that we find out how the new pound coin is made,

6:46:46 > 6:46:48which is actually made with silver and gold.

6:46:48 > 6:46:51I went to the Royal Mint to find out how they do it.

6:46:51 > 6:46:52Hi! Cup of tea, please.

6:46:55 > 6:46:58Lovely! Thank you.

6:46:58 > 6:47:01So, today, I'm going to be looking at the best make ever.

6:47:01 > 6:47:03I'm going to be making money.

6:47:03 > 6:47:05Now, you may have noticed recently that the pound coin

6:47:05 > 6:47:08has changed from this one to this one.

6:47:08 > 6:47:12You may also think that's not a big deal, but it actually is.

6:47:12 > 6:47:14Get ready for some serious numbers.

6:47:16 > 6:47:18There are around 1.5 billion pound coins

6:47:18 > 6:47:20currently being used in the UK.

6:47:20 > 6:47:23Around 400 million are kept in savings jars

6:47:23 > 6:47:25and they can last for up to 40 years,

6:47:25 > 6:47:30but the really scary number is that roughly one in 30 pound coins

6:47:30 > 6:47:32is a fake and that's a problem.

6:47:33 > 6:47:36So, the guys that make the country's money have stepped in

6:47:36 > 6:47:39to take action and we've been given exclusive access

6:47:39 > 6:47:42to see how they change...your change. It's funny, that.

6:47:42 > 6:47:45Anyway, so we're going somewhere where there's a lot of money.

6:47:47 > 6:47:49Yeah, I wish.

6:47:49 > 6:47:51BEEPING

6:47:51 > 6:47:54Welcome to the Royal Mint.

6:47:54 > 6:47:56This room is where all the coins in the UK are made

6:47:56 > 6:47:59and we're talking about a serious amount of money.

6:47:59 > 6:48:03These machines here can churn out 700 coins a minute

6:48:03 > 6:48:07so if we're talking pound coins, that's £1 million a day.

6:48:07 > 6:48:10That's enough to pay Taylor Swift, One Direction

6:48:10 > 6:48:13and Cristiano Ronaldo to hang out with you.

6:48:13 > 6:48:15Some serious money!

6:48:15 > 6:48:16To find out more,

6:48:16 > 6:48:20I'm meeting one of the curators here at the Royal Mint, Chris Barker.

6:48:20 > 6:48:22What do you think it was about the old pound coin

6:48:22 > 6:48:24that made it so easy to forge?

6:48:24 > 6:48:26It's just that counterfeiters have become so good.

6:48:26 > 6:48:29They've become so good at copying it and the round pound doesn't have

6:48:29 > 6:48:31as many security features as the new £1 does have.

6:48:31 > 6:48:33It's a coin that James Bond would use, isn't it?

6:48:33 > 6:48:36Can you talk me through the actual security features of the coin?

6:48:36 > 6:48:37You want to go and speak to a guy called Gordon.

6:48:37 > 6:48:40He's our chief engraver and he'll be able to tell you more about that.

6:48:40 > 6:48:41Gordon - he's our man.

6:48:41 > 6:48:45As chief engraver, Gordon is responsible for making sure

6:48:45 > 6:48:50the coin not only looks great, but can't be copied easily.

6:48:50 > 6:48:52(Kind of a big deal round here.)

6:48:52 > 6:48:54He and his team have come up with some very cool ways

6:48:54 > 6:48:57to stop counterfeiters copying this new coin.

6:48:58 > 6:49:00We've got what we call microtext,

6:49:00 > 6:49:03which is really fine lettering just on the inside edge of the coin.

6:49:03 > 6:49:07We've got this thing which is a holographic sort of feature.

6:49:07 > 6:49:10You look at it in one direction, you see one design.

6:49:10 > 6:49:12You look at it in another direction, you see another.

6:49:12 > 6:49:15That's really clever. So, that's hard to replicate, I presume?

6:49:15 > 6:49:17Everything that we do is to try and make it really difficult

6:49:17 > 6:49:20for somebody else to do it and the idea is that it costs them more

6:49:20 > 6:49:22than £1 to make a pound coin...

6:49:22 > 6:49:24Then it's pointless making the coin, of course.

6:49:24 > 6:49:26A very simple question, I guess,

6:49:26 > 6:49:29is how you get those two metals to come together as one coin.

6:49:29 > 6:49:32It's all done in the press and we've got those presses here

6:49:32 > 6:49:34- if you want to have a look at them.- I would love to. Is that OK?

6:49:34 > 6:49:36- Yeah, that'd be no problem at all.- Amazing!

6:49:36 > 6:49:38Gordon, thank you very much.

6:49:38 > 6:49:40The two parts of the coin are loaded into a machine

6:49:40 > 6:49:42using a forklift truck.

6:49:42 > 6:49:45Then, with a simple push of a button -

6:49:45 > 6:49:46oh, yes, look who's pushing it -

6:49:46 > 6:49:48the machine presses the coin together

6:49:48 > 6:49:51with a whopping 70 tonnes of pressure.

6:49:52 > 6:49:55Once the coin's been pressed, it's dropped into a box,

6:49:55 > 6:49:58where it can be checked for quality.

6:49:58 > 6:50:00And here it is - the brand-new pound coin that you're going

6:50:00 > 6:50:04to be using in next to no time. But the story doesn't end here.

6:50:04 > 6:50:07Yes, the pound coins have now been made, but the next challenge

6:50:07 > 6:50:09is getting them out to the rest of the country

6:50:09 > 6:50:10and that's where these boxes come in.

6:50:14 > 6:50:17One thing's for sure, the Royal Mint don't do things by halves.

6:50:17 > 6:50:19They don't understand the word "small".

6:50:19 > 6:50:24Everything here is enormous. Now, in each one of these boxes is £85,000.

6:50:24 > 6:50:27That weighs 664kg.

6:50:27 > 6:50:30That means that two of these things together

6:50:30 > 6:50:32is the same weight as a hippopotamus.

6:50:32 > 6:50:34Just two of them!

6:50:34 > 6:50:35This is big.

6:50:38 > 6:50:40See? I told you it was big.

6:50:46 > 6:50:47So, once our big box of money

6:50:47 > 6:50:49has been loaded onto our forklift truck over here,

6:50:49 > 6:50:52it makes its way down to this side of the warehouse,

6:50:52 > 6:50:54where we have to perform a couple of checks.

6:50:54 > 6:50:56Mark, that's EL-1, please.

6:50:57 > 6:50:59Thank you. Quick scan.

6:50:59 > 6:51:01- BEEP - Beautiful. Quick scan.

6:51:01 > 6:51:02- BEEP - Beautiful.

6:51:02 > 6:51:03And now it can be loaded onto the van,

6:51:03 > 6:51:05which is a bit like a Batmobile.

6:51:05 > 6:51:10Well, a white boxy-mobile. Anyway, thank you very much. As you were.

6:51:11 > 6:51:13Actually, this truck is awesome.

6:51:13 > 6:51:16It's got an armoured wall, there's a locked box at the back

6:51:16 > 6:51:19and it is guarded by a fire-breathing dragon.

6:51:19 > 6:51:21Raar!

6:51:21 > 6:51:23OK, not a fire-breathing dragon - just me.

6:51:23 > 6:51:25But it does have loads of gadgets and gizmos in here

6:51:25 > 6:51:28that I can't tell you about, but in the back, it has 20 boxes,

6:51:28 > 6:51:31each one of them containing £85,000.

6:51:31 > 6:51:34Now, that...is a lot.

6:51:34 > 6:51:36- ENGINE STARTS - Yeah.

6:51:38 > 6:51:39It's a lot of money, that.

6:51:41 > 6:51:43Once the coins are loaded up,

6:51:43 > 6:51:46the trucks head off for coin centres around the country,

6:51:46 > 6:51:47where they are double-checked for quality

6:51:47 > 6:51:50and then split up into smaller bags.

6:51:52 > 6:51:55And it's from here that they are hand-delivered to banks

6:51:55 > 6:51:57and shops near you and me.

6:52:01 > 6:52:03Thanks very much. So, there you have it.

6:52:03 > 6:52:05Now you can spend your new pound coin

6:52:05 > 6:52:08in shops up and down the country, knowing the journey its made

6:52:08 > 6:52:11before it even gets to your pocket. So cool!

6:52:12 > 6:52:15Actually, I should probably spend a penny.

6:52:17 > 6:52:19I want a new pound coin, they're so cool!

6:52:19 > 6:52:21Speaking of cool, Jon Burgerman's back.

6:52:21 > 6:52:23- Hello!- Hello! - Welcome back to the show.

6:52:23 > 6:52:25- Now, I'm very excited for this make we're about to do.- Me, too.

6:52:25 > 6:52:27It was inspired by you, actually,

6:52:27 > 6:52:29because when you were last on Blue Peter,

6:52:29 > 6:52:33we noticed you said something quite specific about your masterpiece.

6:52:33 > 6:52:35Have a look at this.

6:52:35 > 6:52:37You've put some of your favourite bits from Blue Peter

6:52:37 > 6:52:39across the years - there's a tortoise there.

6:52:39 > 6:52:42And I don't know about this one - a bit of egg and chips?

6:52:42 > 6:52:44- What's all that about? - Well, when I was drawing the piece,

6:52:44 > 6:52:48I began thinking about my memories of Blue Peter and watching it

6:52:48 > 6:52:50as a child so, yeah, this is what I used to eat

6:52:50 > 6:52:52when I came home from school.

6:52:52 > 6:52:56- See? So, you love eggs, we know you love splat.- Yes.

6:52:56 > 6:52:58You look like a guy who loves a laugh.

6:52:58 > 6:53:02- I love laughing, walks in the park.- Good!

6:53:02 > 6:53:05Well, this make is perfect for you, then. So, Jon, lead the way.

6:53:05 > 6:53:08- What are we going to need? - All right, we need...

6:53:20 > 6:53:22OK, so what am I currently stirring? It looks gloopy.

6:53:22 > 6:53:24So, this is the glue,

6:53:24 > 6:53:26some white paint and the washing-up liquid

6:53:26 > 6:53:27and we're going to mix it all together

6:53:27 > 6:53:29and we're going to pour a blob of it,

6:53:29 > 6:53:31a splat of it, not all of it,

6:53:31 > 6:53:34but a bunch of it onto the plastic sheet

6:53:34 > 6:53:36and then with our little stirrer,

6:53:36 > 6:53:39we're going to mush it round into a kind of egg shape.

6:53:39 > 6:53:42- We like the words "mush" and "splat" today.- Yes, they're nice words.

6:53:42 > 6:53:44And then once you're happy with that...

6:53:44 > 6:53:47- That's the best I've done all day! - The yellow mixture... It's lovely.

6:53:47 > 6:53:49We're going to put the yolk in

6:53:49 > 6:53:50and we're not going to put too much

6:53:50 > 6:53:52because it might spread out when it lands.

6:53:52 > 6:53:54That's a Blue Peter top tip - not too much yolk.

6:53:54 > 6:53:57- Oh, that's too much yolk. - That was a little too much yolk.

6:53:57 > 6:53:59Watch the pro do it. Not too much yolk...

6:53:59 > 6:54:02But you can use your little stirrer to sort of spread it out.

6:54:02 > 6:54:04- Not too much yolk! - That's way too much yolk.

6:54:04 > 6:54:08All right, we've ruined that a little bit, but it's OK.

6:54:08 > 6:54:11- It can be any kind of shape.- OK.

6:54:11 > 6:54:13Then you're going to need to make your egg shell

6:54:13 > 6:54:16so while we wait for that to dry...

6:54:16 > 6:54:18We haven't got time for that, have we? It's a live show.

6:54:18 > 6:54:21- Let's keep going. - So, we get a balloon,

6:54:21 > 6:54:23we put papier mache, about two layers,

6:54:23 > 6:54:25- over the balloon.- Yep.- And then...

6:54:25 > 6:54:28And then we can pop the balloon and once you've done your zigzags

6:54:28 > 6:54:30and been nice and careful with the scissors,

6:54:30 > 6:54:33you should have something that looks like this, your little eggshells.

6:54:33 > 6:54:34I'll pass you one. It's painting time,

6:54:34 > 6:54:36this is where you can get pretty creative.

6:54:36 > 6:54:40- Now, we're going to go for normal eggshells.- Realistic colour, yeah.

6:54:40 > 6:54:43Greys and those kind of colours, but you can be really creative.

6:54:43 > 6:54:45We love a bit of that on Blue Peter

6:54:45 > 6:54:48so you can do a nice blue one there, you can do stars and stripes.

6:54:48 > 6:54:50You can do an army camo one.

6:54:50 > 6:54:52Whatever takes your fancy, go for it.

6:54:52 > 6:54:54- Now, obviously you'll have more time than us.- Yes.

6:54:54 > 6:54:57That doesn't look that real, but once you've done them...

6:54:57 > 6:55:00Here you go. They should look something like this.

6:55:00 > 6:55:02- These are some we... - Made earlier!- Yes.

6:55:02 > 6:55:04All right, so once we have those, they're nice and dry,

6:55:04 > 6:55:11then we get our splatted eggs and we peel them off the plastic and BOOM!

6:55:11 > 6:55:15You have a hilarious egg splat. You can add some googly eyes to the egg.

6:55:15 > 6:55:17A bit of character. We like that. If you do make one,

6:55:17 > 6:55:20make sure you take a pic and send it to us because we want to see it.
