7:32:08 > 7:32:10Hi, Susie, how are you?

7:32:10 > 7:32:12This is Pilgrim and that's Paz.

7:32:12 > 7:32:13This is Paz.

7:32:13 > 7:32:16Police dogs like these guys help keep us safe at big events

7:32:16 > 7:32:17and in airports too.

7:32:17 > 7:32:21Before we speak to you, have a look at what happened

7:32:21 > 7:32:24when I went along to meet some very special police dogs

7:32:24 > 7:32:25just like these guys.

7:32:25 > 7:32:27I actually got to train them as well. It's fun.

7:32:30 > 7:32:32DOG BARKS

7:32:32 > 7:32:34Police dogs are an important part of the police force -

7:32:34 > 7:32:38from helping to catch criminals to finding illegal and dangerous items.

7:32:38 > 7:32:40They work on the front line.

7:32:42 > 7:32:44Good boy. This is Banjo.

7:32:44 > 7:32:46He is one of the many police dogs that are used

7:32:46 > 7:32:47by the Greater Manchester Police.

7:32:47 > 7:32:49I'm here to find out how they are used.

7:32:49 > 7:32:52In true Blue Peter style, I have been given a challenge.

7:32:52 > 7:32:54He likes cameras, by the way.

7:32:54 > 7:32:55In just a week's time, I'm going

7:32:55 > 7:32:58to be working with the police at Manchester Airport.

7:32:58 > 7:33:00This is very serious. This is real police work.

7:33:00 > 7:33:03I have to learn fast and know exactly what I'm doing.

7:33:03 > 7:33:06Constable Harwood and Banjo reporting for duty.

7:33:06 > 7:33:08Eh? Oh, wrong arm. Sorry.

7:33:10 > 7:33:12'I'm here at Hough End in Chorlton

7:33:12 > 7:33:14'to meet Officer Rob Carlin and his dog Colin.'

7:33:16 > 7:33:18I was expecting to see a German Shepherd,

7:33:18 > 7:33:19but he's a spaniel?

7:33:19 > 7:33:20He is. He is a springer spaniel.

7:33:20 > 7:33:24We don't just use German Shepherds, we use spaniels and Labradors

7:33:24 > 7:33:28and cocker spaniels, springer spaniels for searching.

7:33:28 > 7:33:31Any dog that's got a high play drive, that really wants to please you

7:33:31 > 7:33:34and do the job, we can use.

7:33:34 > 7:33:37With the spaniels and the Labs, the noses are very good.

7:33:37 > 7:33:39When you talk about a high play drive,

7:33:39 > 7:33:41you mean that it's kind of a play and reward thing.

7:33:41 > 7:33:43Even though they're working dogs, they think it's a bit of fun.

7:33:43 > 7:33:46They do. It's all play-based training.

7:33:46 > 7:33:49With the search dogs, they think they're looking for a tennis ball.

7:33:49 > 7:33:51The end result is they get a tennis ball.

7:33:51 > 7:33:53What do you use Colin for? What kind of dog is he?

7:33:53 > 7:33:55Colin is trained to find explosives.

7:33:55 > 7:33:57There are several types of explosives.

7:33:59 > 7:34:00Colin is trained to find those.

7:34:01 > 7:34:03So Rob and Colin are going to give me

7:34:03 > 7:34:05a demonstration of what I need to learn.

7:34:07 > 7:34:09Hidden in this function room are a small amount of explosives

7:34:09 > 7:34:11for Colin to find.

7:34:13 > 7:34:15You can see Colin is wearing a harnesses now.

7:34:15 > 7:34:18This is a trigger for the dog so that he knows he is searching.

7:34:18 > 7:34:20Stay.

7:34:20 > 7:34:22- He's a good boy.- Sit. Go find.

7:34:25 > 7:34:27I'm watching the dog now.

7:34:27 > 7:34:29You have to keep your eye on the dog at all times.

7:34:29 > 7:34:32He might do something that I need to recognise

7:34:32 > 7:34:34that he may have got into a scent pattern.

7:34:36 > 7:34:38How do you know when he has found something?

7:34:38 > 7:34:40What does he do to tell you that?

7:34:40 > 7:34:43He will get to the source of the smell and he will stop.

7:34:43 > 7:34:44This is safe. We know this is OK.

7:34:44 > 7:34:47This has been searched. We will move down now.

7:34:49 > 7:34:50He likes that area, doesn't he?

7:34:50 > 7:34:52You can see now he's getting very interested there.

7:34:52 > 7:34:54Colin has now stopped.

7:34:54 > 7:34:56He is now waiting for his tennis ball.

7:34:56 > 7:34:57Good boy.

7:34:57 > 7:35:00'That is Colin's reward, so let's see what he has found.'

7:35:00 > 7:35:04- Just behind the step there. - Oh, yeah.- Pick that up.

7:35:05 > 7:35:10Just inside the pot there, we've got plastic explosives.

7:35:10 > 7:35:12In the canister, the explosives are perfectly safe.

7:35:12 > 7:35:16But in the wrong hands, they could be dangerous.

7:35:16 > 7:35:17He did the job, he found it.

7:35:17 > 7:35:21- I've now got to try and do that with my own dog.- Yes, that's right.

7:35:21 > 7:35:23So say hello to Ziggy. Ziggy is my search dog.

7:35:23 > 7:35:25He is. This is Ziggy. He's a new dog.

7:35:25 > 7:35:27He's only seven months old.

7:35:27 > 7:35:30He has done a little bit, but not a great deal.

7:35:30 > 7:35:33- We're both in training, I suppose. - That's right. Over to you.

7:35:33 > 7:35:36- Me and you, Ziggy. - See if you can find it.- OK.

7:35:36 > 7:35:37Find.

7:35:39 > 7:35:40Ziggy.

7:35:42 > 7:35:43This way. Ziggy.

7:35:44 > 7:35:45Here, boy.

7:35:46 > 7:35:49Ziggy. Ziggy.

7:35:49 > 7:35:50'I don't think he's listening!'

7:35:52 > 7:35:54Give him the command to find again.

7:35:54 > 7:35:55Like that.

7:35:57 > 7:35:59- He's very excited about something here.- He is, yes.

7:35:59 > 7:36:01- Leave him with it now.- OK.

7:36:01 > 7:36:03There you go. That's the dog's indication.

7:36:03 > 7:36:06He's gone into the sit. We'll reward Ziggy a bit more quickly

7:36:06 > 7:36:08- because he is a young dog.- OK.

7:36:08 > 7:36:10- Brilliant. Well done. - Good boy, Ziggy. That was brilliant.

7:36:10 > 7:36:11First timer as well.

7:36:11 > 7:36:14You got better as the search went on.

7:36:14 > 7:36:16Initially, you were perhaps too close to the dog.

7:36:16 > 7:36:19- At one point he was behind you. - Did we find anything?

7:36:19 > 7:36:22Ziggy knows he has found something.

7:36:22 > 7:36:23'It's more plastic explosives.'

7:36:23 > 7:36:27- He did really well.- There you have it.- So did you.- Thank you very much.

7:36:27 > 7:36:29- That was brilliant. - No problem. Well done.

7:36:29 > 7:36:31Do I get a tennis ball now?

7:36:31 > 7:36:32DOGS BARK

7:36:33 > 7:36:36Today is the day for my challenge at Manchester Airport.

7:36:36 > 7:36:38It's time for Ziggy and I to work as a team

7:36:38 > 7:36:40in a special training exercise.

7:36:43 > 7:36:45The front pocket is the most important part

7:36:45 > 7:36:49of any police officer who works with a dog's uniform.

7:36:49 > 7:36:52You'll see it say there on the side, "Scoop the poop."

7:36:52 > 7:36:54So...be prepared.

7:36:54 > 7:36:56But now things are about to get serious.

7:36:56 > 7:36:58Rob has hidden a small amount of explosives

7:36:58 > 7:37:00somewhere in the busy airport.

7:37:00 > 7:37:03It's down to me and Ziggy to find them.

7:37:03 > 7:37:05Search.

7:37:06 > 7:37:08'We're off to an enthusiastic start.'

7:37:08 > 7:37:09Ziggy. Ziggy.

7:37:12 > 7:37:13'But still no sign.'

7:37:14 > 7:37:17'At least Ziggy is listening to me.'

7:37:17 > 7:37:19'And as he comes to a stop,

7:37:19 > 7:37:22'it looks like Ziggy has discovered something.'

7:37:22 > 7:37:25If that's not a definite point, I don't know what is.

7:37:25 > 7:37:27Good boy, well done!

7:37:27 > 7:37:28Yes!

7:37:28 > 7:37:30Let's just have a quick look.

7:37:31 > 7:37:35I think we can officially say you've passed the test.

7:37:35 > 7:37:38'Such a great experience to be here with Ziggy,

7:37:38 > 7:37:40'for him to show me the ropes in the airport.

7:37:40 > 7:37:42'It's weird, when you think about it,

7:37:42 > 7:37:44'how dogs are led with their sense of smell.'

7:37:44 > 7:37:47I'm actually the same with sausages. If anybody gets...

7:37:47 > 7:37:49HE SNIFFS

7:37:51 > 7:37:53They were the best sausages I've ever had.

7:37:53 > 7:37:55That was a proper hard day's work, that was.

7:37:55 > 7:37:58Before we meet the police dogs and the handlers,

7:37:58 > 7:37:59I want to show you something.

7:37:59 > 7:38:01What I love about Blue Peter is that when you send stuff to us

7:38:01 > 7:38:03we can show you next week and say,

7:38:03 > 7:38:05"We've had this in during the week."

7:38:05 > 7:38:07But it's so instant. This morning, this came in the post.

7:38:07 > 7:38:09We haven't shown you the film yet.

7:38:09 > 7:38:11But Gemma, from what she saw last week

7:38:11 > 7:38:13about what was going to be on today's show has drawn this picture.

7:38:13 > 7:38:15I think it's absolutely brilliant.

7:38:15 > 7:38:18That is me with Rob from last week looking after the police dogs.

7:38:18 > 7:38:21It was a great experience. I'm glad you captured it on a piece of paper.

7:38:21 > 7:38:22Gemma, thank you very much.

7:38:22 > 7:38:24Terry and Dave, let's talk about these cuties.

7:38:24 > 7:38:27They're very little and young, aren't they?

7:38:27 > 7:38:30These two here are seven weeks old. We bred them ourselves

7:38:30 > 7:38:33at West Midlands Police for succession planning.

7:38:33 > 7:38:35When do you start training them?

7:38:35 > 7:38:37Their training is starting now, seven weeks of age.

7:38:37 > 7:38:39Their training is starting now.

7:38:39 > 7:38:42What sort of things do you do with them when they are that little?

7:38:42 > 7:38:45Do you try low level games and work them up to the hard stuff?

7:38:45 > 7:38:47We'll allocate them a puppy walker

7:38:47 > 7:38:49and they'll expose them to any environment

7:38:49 > 7:38:51that you could think a police dog would go.

7:38:51 > 7:38:53Is that what this is we're looking at here

7:38:53 > 7:38:54with the little guy running around?

7:38:54 > 7:38:56At the moment they're in the pen.

7:38:56 > 7:38:59Lots of toys. Playing with the toys.

7:38:59 > 7:39:02Also at the moment Tony is there getting the dog to follow him.

7:39:02 > 7:39:04Basic obedience.

7:39:04 > 7:39:06Getting the dogs to interact with us.

7:39:06 > 7:39:09It's all about socialisation, exposing to them as much as possible

7:39:09 > 7:39:10at a young age.

7:39:10 > 7:39:13There you can see the dog is retrieving a piece of paper

7:39:13 > 7:39:15and he should bring it back.

7:39:15 > 7:39:19It's a reward-based game that you're playing, isn't it?

7:39:19 > 7:39:21All our training is reward-based. The dog's working.

7:39:21 > 7:39:23At the end of an exercise, they will always get

7:39:23 > 7:39:25some form of a toy or food.

7:39:25 > 7:39:27Is it true that you run something called Pup Idol?

7:39:27 > 7:39:29Yeah, this is Pup Idol.

7:39:29 > 7:39:31The contestants come in, they do what they're capable of

7:39:31 > 7:39:33and then you vote for them.

7:39:33 > 7:39:34We run it to advertise what we do.

7:39:34 > 7:39:38- There is one currently now, Pup Idol Two.- Genius.- Following our spaniels.

7:39:38 > 7:39:41That's on YouTube for people to follow on West Midlands Police site.

7:39:41 > 7:39:44So much like the TV show, people get voted out, don't they?

7:39:44 > 7:39:46Do all of your dogs get through or do some of them not make it?

7:39:46 > 7:39:5185% of our dogs that we breed make it in the scheme.

7:39:51 > 7:39:54Those who don't are suitable for pets and we re-home them as pets.

7:39:54 > 7:39:58They have all got a good temperament, as you can see, and are sociable.

7:39:58 > 7:40:00We are happy to re-home them if we find the right homes.

7:40:00 > 7:40:03What better pet to look after their home than a police dog?

7:40:03 > 7:40:04It's a genius idea.

7:40:04 > 7:40:08They've had no training, but by sight they are a good deterrent.

7:40:08 > 7:40:11Fabulous. Well, while you were watching me training with Ziggy,

7:40:11 > 7:40:14I've hidden Susie's tennis ball somewhere in the studio.

7:40:14 > 7:40:16'You can see me doing it here.

7:40:16 > 7:40:18'We were thinking the best thing to do is show her the ball first,

7:40:18 > 7:40:21'let her know that she's on the lookout for something.

7:40:21 > 7:40:23'I thought the best place to hide it would be somewhere

7:40:23 > 7:40:26'low down to give her a chance. But I didn't want to be too easy.

7:40:26 > 7:40:31'So, for you at home, this is where I've hidden the tennis ball.

7:40:31 > 7:40:32'Susie doesn't know this, of course.

7:40:32 > 7:40:36'But we'd like to see if she can find it live.'

7:40:36 > 7:40:37We'll give it a go.

7:40:37 > 7:40:39- Good luck, Susie.- Find it.

7:40:44 > 7:40:48You're looking for her to follow a scent pattern here, aren't you?

7:40:48 > 7:40:49Good girl, Susie.

7:40:49 > 7:40:52That was the strongest smelling tennis ball ever.

7:40:52 > 7:40:53Good girl, Susie.

7:40:53 > 7:40:55Well done. There you have it.

7:40:55 > 7:40:56That is it, isn't it?

7:40:56 > 7:40:59- Good girl.- Brilliant, Susie. Thank you.

7:40:59 > 7:41:01Dave and Terry, thank you for bringing them in.

7:41:01 > 7:41:02It's similar to us and Radzi.

7:41:02 > 7:41:05When he does a good show we give him a biscuit.

7:41:05 > 7:41:06Isn't that right, Radz?

7:41:06 > 7:41:08Rubbish book, anyway. Rubbish.

7:41:09 > 7:41:10It's pretty safe to say

7:41:10 > 7:41:13that I'm positively overflowing with books here.

7:41:13 > 7:41:14That is for one reason.

7:41:14 > 7:41:17It's the Blue Peter Book Awards 2014.

7:41:17 > 7:41:21In December we announced the six books that were shortlisted.

7:41:21 > 7:41:22There are two categories...

7:41:25 > 7:41:29400 children in ten schools all read and judged the books.

7:41:29 > 7:41:32Last week they told us what they thought of the Best Book With Facts.

7:41:32 > 7:41:35This week, it's all about the Best Story.

7:41:35 > 7:41:38Let's hear from the judges themselves.

7:41:49 > 7:41:51First up, Rooftoppers.

7:41:51 > 7:41:53Well, Rooftoppers is my favourite book

7:41:53 > 7:41:56because it was full of action and determination

7:42:10 > 7:42:13The only clue she has is the address of the cello maker.

7:42:13 > 7:42:15In Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell,

7:42:15 > 7:42:17we join Sophie on the run from the authorities,

7:42:17 > 7:42:19where she finds Matteo,

7:42:19 > 7:42:21a boy who walks tightropes and lives in the sky.

7:42:21 > 7:42:23In a race across the rooftops

7:42:23 > 7:42:26will they ever be able to find her mother before it's too late?

7:42:26 > 7:42:28My favourite part of the book was the first part,

7:42:28 > 7:42:30when Charles finds Sophie.

7:42:30 > 7:42:32He brought her home to take care of her.

7:42:32 > 7:42:34That just proves that he's a good man.

7:42:34 > 7:42:37The characters are so interesting it makes me want to read more.

7:42:37 > 7:42:40Matteo is my favourite character because he is an expert

7:42:40 > 7:42:43of jumping from rooftops and always gets into fights.

7:42:43 > 7:42:44Sophie was my favourite character

7:42:44 > 7:42:47cos she wasn't afraid to say what she believed.

7:42:47 > 7:42:50When she believed that her mum was still alive

7:42:50 > 7:42:51she always stood up for her.

7:42:51 > 7:42:54People should read this book, it looks like it's for girls,

7:42:54 > 7:42:56but it's for boys as well.

7:42:56 > 7:43:00If you like emotions like sad and happiness,

7:43:00 > 7:43:03you'll be really happy to read this book.

7:43:03 > 7:43:05Next, it's Whale Boy.

7:43:05 > 7:43:06Whale Boy is my favourite book

7:43:06 > 7:43:10because it is full of mystery and adventure and mysterious twists.

7:43:11 > 7:43:13Michael has never seen a whale, not a real one.

7:43:13 > 7:43:16Everyone knows they disappeared from the waters

7:43:16 > 7:43:18around the little Island of Liberty many years ago.

7:43:18 > 7:43:21Whale Boy by Nicola Davies tells the fishy tale that unfolds

7:43:21 > 7:43:24after a terrible storm brings a mysterious stranger

7:43:24 > 7:43:25to Michael's island home,

7:43:25 > 7:43:28who offers Michael what he's always dreamed of -

7:43:28 > 7:43:30his very own boat.

7:43:30 > 7:43:33All he has to do in return is help the stranger find the whales

7:43:33 > 7:43:35and promise to never tell a soul.

7:43:35 > 7:43:38Michael is about to learn that sometimes dreams come at a price.

7:43:41 > 7:43:44Whale Boy was my favourite book, because it was full of adventure.

7:43:44 > 7:43:46Michael was really brave.

7:43:46 > 7:43:49Some of the characters were bad. Some of them were good.

7:43:49 > 7:43:51I just really enjoyed it.

7:43:51 > 7:43:53It hooks you in so well.

7:43:54 > 7:43:56I think everybody should have to read it.

7:43:57 > 7:44:00My favourite moment was when Michael found Freedom,

7:44:00 > 7:44:03the whale in the water, because it was really magical,

7:44:03 > 7:44:05like it was coming alive.

7:44:05 > 7:44:10My favourite character is Michael, because he is funny,

7:44:10 > 7:44:12and adventurous and he is always determined

7:44:12 > 7:44:14to do what he wants to do.

7:44:14 > 7:44:16I think he should win an award for bravery,

7:44:16 > 7:44:19because he was so brave out in the storm.

7:44:19 > 7:44:23You should read this book because it's very engaging

7:44:23 > 7:44:25and it would help you with your own writing.

7:44:25 > 7:44:28One of the thing I don't like is it's very slow to pick up,

7:44:28 > 7:44:31at the beginning it doesn't really hook you in.

7:44:31 > 7:44:33However, once it's hooked you in,

7:44:33 > 7:44:35it is one of the most amazing books there.

7:44:35 > 7:44:38And finally, Oliver and the Seawigs.

7:44:38 > 7:44:39I like Oliver and the Seawigs

7:44:39 > 7:44:42because I love all the different characteristics in the characters

7:44:42 > 7:44:44and it is like saying opposites attract

7:44:44 > 7:44:47cos they're all different and unique in their own special ways.

7:44:47 > 7:44:50Oliver and the Seawigs by Philip Reeve and Sara McIntyre

7:44:50 > 7:44:53is the adventure-filled story of ten-year-old Oliver Crisp,

7:44:53 > 7:44:57the son of explorers who met at the top of Mount Everest.

7:44:57 > 7:44:59When his parents go missing in uncharted islands,

7:44:59 > 7:45:02Oliver sets sail across the Sarcastic Sea to rescue them.

7:45:02 > 7:45:04In his quest he meets a talking albatross,

7:45:04 > 7:45:06a mermaid with a black eye,

7:45:06 > 7:45:07a villainous boy called Stacey de Lacey,

7:45:07 > 7:45:10and an army of pesky sea monkeys.

7:45:11 > 7:45:14Oliver And The Seawigs is my favourite book.

7:45:14 > 7:45:17The Sarcastic Seaweed was hilarious.

7:45:18 > 7:45:21My favourite character is Oliver, because he is very brave

7:45:21 > 7:45:22going to sea all by himself.

7:45:22 > 7:45:24My favourite part in the book

7:45:24 > 7:45:27was when Stacy de Lacey was walking along the beach

7:45:27 > 7:45:28talking to the sea monkeys

7:45:28 > 7:45:33about how his name could be a boy's name as well, not just a girl's name.

7:45:33 > 7:45:35He gets really stressed about it.

7:45:35 > 7:45:38It has got loads of humour, it drags you into the book,

7:45:38 > 7:45:40you never want to put it down.

7:45:40 > 7:45:43People should not judge a book by its cover,

7:45:43 > 7:45:45because when I looked at Oliver And The Seawigs

7:45:45 > 7:45:47it didn't really appeal to me.

7:45:47 > 7:45:49But when I started reading it, I couldn't put it down.

7:45:49 > 7:45:51You should definitely read the book.

7:45:51 > 7:45:52It is amazing.

7:45:52 > 7:45:55You will get addicted to it very easily.

7:45:55 > 7:45:57I think everyone should get into more books

7:45:57 > 7:46:01and just read every day, to see what they can find,

7:46:01 > 7:46:03and suggest to other people what they like,

7:46:03 > 7:46:06like Oliver And The Seawigs.

7:46:06 > 7:46:08The experts agree, three excellent reads.

7:46:16 > 7:46:18Barney, what are you doing?

7:46:18 > 7:46:20I'm holding the books up with the power of my mind, Radzi.

7:46:20 > 7:46:22Barney, it's string.

7:46:22 > 7:46:23Oh, yeah...

7:46:26 > 7:46:28Didn't quite work, did it?

7:46:28 > 7:46:30- Not as well as we'd hoped, if I'm being completely honest.- OK.

7:46:30 > 7:46:33But the winners are going to be announced in two weeks' time

7:46:33 > 7:46:35and that is actually on World Book Day live on Blue Peter,

7:46:35 > 7:46:36so make sure you are watching.

7:46:36 > 7:46:38- I've got a book joke.- Go on.

7:46:38 > 7:46:40I went into a library and said, "Can I have burger and chips?"

7:46:40 > 7:46:42The librarian said, "This is a library."

7:46:42 > 7:46:45I went, "Oh, sorry. (Can I have burger and chips?)"

7:46:45 > 7:46:48No-one laughed. I did it in rehearsals and no-one laughed then.

7:46:48 > 7:46:50- LAUGHTER - Thank you very much. Here all week.

7:46:50 > 7:46:53Right then, last weekend, Lindsey met Malorie Blackman

7:46:53 > 7:46:56and we thought if you ever wanted to be a best-selling author,

7:46:56 > 7:46:58this would be good to watch. She is the Children's Laureate.

7:46:58 > 7:47:01That is an award that is handed out once every two years

7:47:01 > 7:47:04to an author or illustrator for their outstanding achievements.

7:47:04 > 7:47:06So this is what happened when Lindsey met Malorie.

7:47:06 > 7:47:09- I think her love her a bit. - Lindsey?- Malorie!

7:47:14 > 7:47:16'Once upon a time, there was a Blue Peter presenter

7:47:16 > 7:47:19'who got to spend the day with author Malorie Blackman.'

7:47:26 > 7:47:28So what are we actually here for today?

7:47:28 > 7:47:30I'm part of the Imagine Festival,

7:47:30 > 7:47:32so I am going to be talking about my books.

7:47:32 > 7:47:35I am looking forward to that. Bit nervous. Once I'm on stage...

7:47:35 > 7:47:37You'll be fine.

7:47:37 > 7:47:42Meanwhile, loads of fans started to arrive to get a glimpse of Malorie.

7:47:42 > 7:47:45- You're a big Malorie Blackman fan, aren't you?- Yes.

7:47:45 > 7:47:47Out of ten, what would you give her as a writer?

7:47:47 > 7:47:48- Ten.- Ten.

7:47:48 > 7:47:50Why do you like her writing?

7:47:50 > 7:47:55I just think it is different to everything else you can buy.

7:47:55 > 7:47:56What about you?

7:47:56 > 7:47:59It is all relevant to what's going on in the world at the time.

7:47:59 > 7:48:02Her books have their own character, they are quite different.

7:48:04 > 7:48:07As the audience took to their seats, it was time for Malorie

7:48:07 > 7:48:10to take to the stage to talk about her books.

7:48:10 > 7:48:11- Have a good show. - Thank you very much.

7:48:13 > 7:48:14CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

7:48:17 > 7:48:21The way I know a book is working is if my characters take over.

7:48:21 > 7:48:23But, of course, the Blue Peter audience

7:48:23 > 7:48:26had their very own questions for Malorie.

7:48:26 > 7:48:28Blue Violet Sparkly Baker says...

7:48:28 > 7:48:31Good names!

7:48:31 > 7:48:33"What was it like being mentioned in a Tinie Tempah song?"

7:48:33 > 7:48:35Oh, that was surreal! Goodness me!

7:48:35 > 7:48:38It was one of those things where my daughter came rushing up and said,

7:48:38 > 7:48:40"You're in a song, you're in a song!"

7:48:40 > 7:48:43# Look, I'm just a writer from the ghetto like Malorie Blackman... #

7:48:43 > 7:48:45I think for all of about ten minutes

7:48:45 > 7:48:48my daughter actually thought I was cool, so that was really good.

7:48:48 > 7:48:49Yellow Mega Cherry says,

7:48:49 > 7:48:52"Would you rather have a bath in baked beans or custard?"

7:48:52 > 7:48:55I think it'd probably have to be custard.

7:48:55 > 7:48:57- OK.- A bit smoother.- Not savoury.

7:48:57 > 7:49:00Red Violet Rock Dude says, "Do any of your books relate

7:49:00 > 7:49:02"to something that happened in your life?"

7:49:02 > 7:49:04Some of them do. I wrote a book called Thief,

7:49:04 > 7:49:06about a girl who was accused of something she didn't do,

7:49:06 > 7:49:09and that was inspired by something that happened to me

7:49:09 > 7:49:12when I was accused of something I didn't do when I was at school.

7:49:12 > 7:49:15Purple Gentle Doe says, "Hi, Malorie, big fan..." Of course.

7:49:15 > 7:49:18- Hi!- "..my question is, how has becoming an author

7:49:18 > 7:49:20"changed you as a person?"

7:49:20 > 7:49:22It has made me a terrible people watcher.

7:49:22 > 7:49:24If I'm sitting behind you on a bus or train,

7:49:24 > 7:49:28I'm afraid I will listen to your conversation, and...

7:49:28 > 7:49:32And I always carry a notepad and pen in my bag,

7:49:32 > 7:49:35so I write down ideas and snippets of conversation.

7:49:35 > 7:49:37OK, so Purple Quirky Pegasus says,

7:49:37 > 7:49:40"If you could meet anyone who has ever lived, who would it be?"

7:49:40 > 7:49:42I'd love to have met Nelson Mandela.

7:49:42 > 7:49:44I'm really sorry I didn't get to meet him.

7:49:44 > 7:49:45I would love to meet Shakespeare.

7:49:47 > 7:49:48I think he'd be a good laugh.

7:49:50 > 7:49:53'And then it was time for all the fans to meet Malorie.

7:49:53 > 7:49:55'Some of her fans were young and some, well,

7:49:55 > 7:49:57'they were a little bit older.'

7:49:57 > 7:50:00- Thank you for a lovely day. - My pleasure!- Thank you.

7:50:00 > 7:50:03Well, it's been an absolutely amazing day with Malorie Blackman.

7:50:03 > 7:50:05I've had a great time and really enj...

7:50:05 > 7:50:09M... She's leaving! Malorie! Malorie!

7:50:10 > 7:50:12"The end."

7:50:12 > 7:50:13Oh.

7:50:13 > 7:50:15Not really sure about the ending.

7:50:15 > 7:50:18That Lindsey character was pretty cool, though.

7:50:19 > 7:50:21Lindsey Russell, what are you like?

7:50:21 > 7:50:23It's time to get creative.

7:50:23 > 7:50:27Every single week we say we love it when you send in your artwork.

7:50:27 > 7:50:29Here is the proof.

7:50:29 > 7:50:31This here is a beautiful piece of artwork

7:50:31 > 7:50:33sent in from Emily and Nicole.

7:50:33 > 7:50:34We thought it was ingenious.

7:50:34 > 7:50:36So much so, that we asked them to come to the studio

7:50:36 > 7:50:39to help explain to you just how to make one

7:50:39 > 7:50:41so it's time to do just that.

7:50:41 > 7:50:43It's time to give a huge Blue Peter welcome to Emily and Nicole!

7:50:43 > 7:50:46- WHOOPING AND APPLAUSE - Yes.

7:50:46 > 7:50:49- Welcome. Welcome. Girls, how are you feeling?- Good.

7:50:49 > 7:50:52- Are you excited to be on Blue Peter?- Yes.

7:50:52 > 7:50:55What gave you this incredible idea to make the awesome works of art?

7:50:55 > 7:50:58Well, we were looking through the cupboards last half term,

7:50:58 > 7:51:02looking for things to do and then we came across some old wax crayons

7:51:02 > 7:51:06and a couple of canvases, so we decided to put the two together

7:51:06 > 7:51:09and we got a hairdryer, melted them

7:51:09 > 7:51:10and that's it, really.

7:51:10 > 7:51:12It's simple but it's so brilliant.

7:51:12 > 7:51:16All the details, by the way, are on the website, which is...

7:51:16 > 7:51:18In fact, which is...

7:51:18 > 7:51:21THEY READ OUT WEBSITE ADDRESS

7:51:21 > 7:51:23Without a hitch, apart from me.

7:51:23 > 7:51:26Now, what do you need in order to make it?

7:51:26 > 7:51:28- You need some crayons.- Check.

7:51:28 > 7:51:30- PVA glue.- Check.

7:51:30 > 7:51:32- Card or canvas.- Check, check.

7:51:32 > 7:51:34- And a hairdryer.- Check.

7:51:34 > 7:51:36All there. In fact, just so you know,

7:51:36 > 7:51:39this canvas may look really expensive. It's actually not.

7:51:39 > 7:51:41It's only a couple of quid from your local art store,

7:51:41 > 7:51:43so don't think it's expensive, it's not at all.

7:51:43 > 7:51:46Now, let's get started. How do we start?

7:51:47 > 7:51:49- First you just get some glue.- Yes.

7:51:49 > 7:51:54- And put it down in the way you want the crayons to be.- OK.

7:51:54 > 7:51:56And then you need to stick the crayons on.

7:51:56 > 7:52:00Brilliant, OK. So we're just going to do a line, right.

7:52:00 > 7:52:02- So we don't need to be shy with the glue, do we?- No.

7:52:02 > 7:52:05Not at all. We don't mind getting our hands dirty here.

7:52:05 > 7:52:08In terms of putting colours down, have you got any tips

7:52:08 > 7:52:11for which colours should go down or just any old colours?

7:52:11 > 7:52:15Well, the lighter colours go nicer together,

7:52:15 > 7:52:17because if the darker colours are together,

7:52:17 > 7:52:21they tend to mix and go a horrible shade of brown.

7:52:21 > 7:52:23- Ah, so you don't want dark colours together?- Yeah.

7:52:25 > 7:52:26Now, if I had more reds and whites,

7:52:26 > 7:52:30I'd be doing the colours of Arsenal cos that is my football team.

7:52:30 > 7:52:31Do you like girls like football?

7:52:31 > 7:52:34- Who do you support? - West Brom.- You're a Baggie!

7:52:34 > 7:52:36Do you know what, straight up top.

7:52:36 > 7:52:39That works for me. I'm from Wolverhampton, so...

7:52:39 > 7:52:41Now, it's not just lines you can do.

7:52:41 > 7:52:43In fact, feast your eyes on these.

7:52:43 > 7:52:47The more creative you are, to be honest, the better.

7:52:47 > 7:52:49It really is individual,

7:52:49 > 7:52:51so get your thinking caps on and get creating.

7:52:51 > 7:52:54Once you have stuck them all on, which you've done very quickly,

7:52:54 > 7:52:56we need to let the glue dry.

7:52:56 > 7:52:59- How long will that take, roughly? - About two hours.

7:52:59 > 7:53:01Two hours, OK.

7:53:01 > 7:53:03Now with TV magic, we have one that we made earlier,

7:53:03 > 7:53:05so let's get that one out.

7:53:05 > 7:53:09Now, we have given them a little bit of heat before we came on

7:53:09 > 7:53:11because this doesn't take a couple of seconds

7:53:11 > 7:53:13to actually melt the wax, does it?

7:53:13 > 7:53:16- No.- How long does it take? - About 10-15 minutes.

7:53:16 > 7:53:19OK, we don't want to waste your time with 10-15 minutes,

7:53:19 > 7:53:21but what comes the next part?

7:53:22 > 7:53:25- The hairdryer.- The hairdryer. Now, before we do use this

7:53:25 > 7:53:27we do need to remember a couple of things, don't we?

7:53:27 > 7:53:28- Yeah.- What are they?

7:53:28 > 7:53:32The wax is really warm when you melt it, so be really careful.

7:53:32 > 7:53:34- OK.- And also it could go everywhere.

7:53:34 > 7:53:36The glue will go everywhere

7:53:36 > 7:53:40so we need to remember the wax can be hot, the hairdryer can be hot and
