6:49:03 > 6:49:07we've some dangerous and deadly spiders here in our studio.

6:49:20 > 6:49:23the UK's freestyle scooter champions are here to perform for you.
6:49:41 > 6:49:44APPLAUSE
6:49:44 > 6:49:46- Hello.- Hi. Hello, welcome to the show.
6:49:46 > 6:49:48It's live, it's interactive and, as you can see,
6:49:48 > 6:49:50Team Razor are warming up to give you a display
6:49:50 > 6:49:52you're not going to want to miss. Don't go anywhere.
6:49:52 > 6:49:55Cool, aren't they? Hands up who's been to the cinema lately.
6:49:55 > 6:49:57If you've been, you'll know the Amazing Spider-Man movie
6:49:57 > 6:49:59has just been released. That's not my opinion -
6:49:59 > 6:50:01it's called that, isn't it?
6:50:01 > 6:50:04That is its actual title. It follows the story of Peter Parker,
6:50:04 > 6:50:06who's bitten by a radioactive spider
6:50:06 > 6:50:08and that's how he got his super powers.
6:50:08 > 6:50:13Actually, it's true because these super powers exist in real life.
6:50:13 > 6:50:19Yes, we are about to introduce you to three big furry, scary spiders.
6:50:19 > 6:50:22You might want to hide behind your cushions now.
6:50:22 > 6:50:23I might stay here for this one.
6:50:23 > 6:50:27No need to worry because we have an expert handler with us.
6:50:27 > 6:50:29It is Crocodile Joe. Now, Crocodile Joe,
6:50:29 > 6:50:31your nickname has crocodile in the title,
6:50:31 > 6:50:34- but you know about spiders, too, don't you?- I certainly do.
6:50:34 > 6:50:37I certainly do. I spent a lot of years in Australia
6:50:37 > 6:50:42researching and studying tarantulas of the Australian rainforest.
6:50:42 > 6:50:46So you are well positioned to handle the ladies we have in these boxes?
6:50:46 > 6:50:47I certainly am. I certainly am.
6:50:47 > 6:50:50OK. Who are you going to introduce us to first?
6:50:50 > 6:50:53- This is a Chile rose tarantula.- Wow. - She's actually called Tilly.
6:50:53 > 6:50:58We mentioned there that spiders have super powers, a bit like Spider-man.
6:50:58 > 6:51:00How is Tilly similar to the superhero?
6:51:00 > 6:51:02Well, she's very similar to Spider-Man
6:51:02 > 6:51:06because this girl actually spins silk, just like Spider-Man.
6:51:06 > 6:51:11Now, this one doesn't actually spin a web like Spider-man.
6:51:11 > 6:51:14- He actually spins silk to catch his prey.- OK.
6:51:14 > 6:51:19This one will actually eat all kinds of little insects
6:51:19 > 6:51:22to little mice, all kinds of little animals.
6:51:22 > 6:51:25It must be a strong web to catch those sorts of animals.
6:51:25 > 6:51:29- It's actually stronger than steel.- What?!
6:51:29 > 6:51:31It's stronger than steel.
6:51:31 > 6:51:34If you can get a piece of steel as wide as a web,
6:51:34 > 6:51:37then the steel would break before the web.
6:51:37 > 6:51:39- Is she poisonous? - She's mildly venomous,
6:51:39 > 6:51:42but it's almost like a bee sting.
6:51:42 > 6:51:46But she does have two centimetre-long fangs
6:51:46 > 6:51:48which she'll pump into her prey.
6:51:48 > 6:51:51My heart is beating so fast!
6:51:51 > 6:51:54You've done really well.
6:51:54 > 6:51:57- Nice to meet you, Tilly. - OK. Moving on to the next one,
6:51:57 > 6:52:00so we're talking about superpowers, things related to the super hero.
6:52:00 > 6:52:03How about our second tarantula in here?
6:52:03 > 6:52:06Well, this one, have a look at him. He's a red knee tarantula.
6:52:06 > 6:52:07Ah, red knee, so red being the same colour
6:52:07 > 6:52:09as the costume that Spider-Man wears?
6:52:09 > 6:52:13Absolutely, and red's for danger. As we know, red's for danger.
6:52:13 > 6:52:16- Look at him.- He's cool.
6:52:16 > 6:52:19He's absolutely cool. You can't really hold this one
6:52:19 > 6:52:24because it flicks its hairs and as it's flicking its hairs,
6:52:24 > 6:52:27those hairs are going to the back of your throat,
6:52:27 > 6:52:31into your eyes and on your skin, makes you really itchy,
6:52:31 > 6:52:34and the fascination with tarantulas is they can hang upside down
6:52:34 > 6:52:40and they can hold 170 times their own body weight,
6:52:40 > 6:52:45that's an equivalent of Spider-Man holding 170 people
6:52:45 > 6:52:47- while hanging off a building with one arm.- That's incredible.
6:52:47 > 6:52:51So when you see Spider-Man has super strength,
6:52:51 > 6:52:53that is because spiders do have super strength?
6:52:53 > 6:52:55Super strength, absolutely.
6:52:55 > 6:52:58Spider-man doesn't flick hairs from his bottom, though, does he?
6:52:58 > 6:53:01- Not in this movie.- Not in this one. - There's bound to be a sequel.
6:53:01 > 6:53:04Right, do you want to put him back? Let's meet the next guy,
6:53:04 > 6:53:07cos that's a big one. Now, is it worth just leaving
6:53:07 > 6:53:10this guy in the cage, cos he's a monster, isn't he?
6:53:10 > 6:53:12Well, this one is a Goliath bird-eating tarantula
6:53:12 > 6:53:14and out the three tarantulas
6:53:14 > 6:53:17that I've brought today, this is the most aggressive
6:53:17 > 6:53:21and that's why I'm going to leave him in the terrarium.
6:53:21 > 6:53:24We're fine with that. You keep him exactly where he is, dude.
6:53:24 > 6:53:26I hate to break it to you, but I can't get the lid back on the box.
6:53:26 > 6:53:29I'm going to get you My First Jigsaw for your birthday.
6:53:29 > 6:53:32He actually has super senses, just like Spider-man,
6:53:32 > 6:53:34because this animal can actually sense a threat
6:53:34 > 6:53:37and if he senses a threat, then he'll rub his hairs
6:53:37 > 6:53:38and it makes a hissing noise.
6:53:38 > 6:53:41So he has spider senses like the superhero himself as well?
6:53:41 > 6:53:44This hissing noise you're talking about, he won't do it now
6:53:44 > 6:53:46because there's no danger here, he's quite content,
6:53:46 > 6:53:49but we have a recording of what this spider sounds like
6:53:49 > 6:53:51when he feels threatened. Have a listen.
6:53:51 > 6:53:53It's more like a leak, really, isn't it?
6:53:53 > 6:53:56- Sounds like a snake.- Like a rattlesnake. When they're scared,
6:53:56 > 6:53:59they shake their tail to let you know.
6:53:59 > 6:54:01To let you know danger, yes.
6:54:01 > 6:54:04This is the largest tarantula in the world.
6:54:04 > 6:54:07They can actually grow 12 inches, like a dinner plate,
6:54:07 > 6:54:10just like a dinner plate, and its fangs
6:54:10 > 6:54:14- are the same length as a cheetah's claws.- What?!
6:54:14 > 6:54:16- A cheetah's claws?- A cheetah's claws.
6:54:16 > 6:54:19You don't think that's possible from something so small, do you?
6:54:19 > 6:54:22Well, there you have it. It's definitely true, isn't it?
6:54:22 > 6:54:25You think about Spider-man, he's got the strongest web in the world
6:54:25 > 6:54:27he can climb walls and... and he's as scary as...
6:54:27 > 6:54:29Are you nervous?
6:54:29 > 6:54:32No. It's reminding me about a frog a little bit and I don't know why.
6:54:32 > 6:54:34I'm not nervous, but I'm a little bit itchy.
6:54:34 > 6:54:35Joe, thank you so much
6:54:35 > 6:54:38for introducing us to these fabulous creatures.
6:54:38 > 6:54:40Now, this is your show, so let us know what you think.
6:54:40 > 6:54:42We're live, get in touch.
6:54:42 > 6:54:45The e-mail address is bluepeter@bbc.co.uk
6:54:45 > 6:54:48Maybe you have a pet spider, maybe you hate spiders,
6:54:48 > 6:54:51and while you're in touch, let us know what your favourite book is,
6:54:51 > 6:54:53because later on in the show,
6:54:53 > 6:54:55Dick and Dom are going to be
6:54:55 > 6:54:57sharing with us their favourite tale.
6:54:57 > 6:54:59So please get in touch,
6:54:59 > 6:55:01we'll try and read out your e-mails later in the show.
6:55:01 > 6:55:04Now though, a few months ago, we moved our garden
6:55:04 > 6:55:06from West London to our new home here in Greater Manchester.
6:55:06 > 6:55:09Her Royal Highness Princess Anne came to help us open it in style,
6:55:09 > 6:55:12but at the time our gardener, Chris Collins,
6:55:12 > 6:55:15had a job that wasn't quite finished.
6:55:19 > 6:55:22I've got one big job left to complete our garden -
6:55:22 > 6:55:24the pond.
6:55:25 > 6:55:28'I want to get some new fish and plants,
6:55:28 > 6:55:31'but before I can do that, I need to put in some groundwork
6:55:31 > 6:55:34'by cutting off the ugly old metal grill...' Job one done.
6:55:34 > 6:55:37'..and replacing it with a specially designed pond cover.'
6:55:37 > 6:55:39Look at that!
6:55:42 > 6:55:45'All the mess from the drilling has gone straight into the water
6:55:45 > 6:55:47'which doesn't matter as the next job is to drain the pond,
6:55:47 > 6:55:49'and I'm doing that the good old-fashioned way.'
6:55:52 > 6:55:54Staying remarkably dry, considering!
6:55:56 > 6:55:59Oh, look. Money.
6:55:59 > 6:56:00There's gold in that there water.
6:56:03 > 6:56:06As you can see, it's also become a bit of a wishing well.
6:56:06 > 6:56:09So if you like muddy money, this is the place to come.
6:56:11 > 6:56:14'Now the pond's cleaned out, I'm off to the garden centre.
6:56:14 > 6:56:16'First up, I need to choose our plants.'
6:56:16 > 6:56:19Now, this is what you call an oxygenator.
6:56:19 > 6:56:21It'll keep the water full of oxygen,
6:56:21 > 6:56:24and that'll help keep our Blue Peter pond nice and healthy.
6:56:24 > 6:56:27Now, I really do want something special and beautiful
6:56:27 > 6:56:28for the Blue Peter pond.
6:56:28 > 6:56:32So I've chosen the royalty of water plants, the water lily or nymphaea.
6:56:32 > 6:56:35You could say this is going to be the princess of our pond.
6:56:35 > 6:56:37Now they're chosen, it's time for some fish.
6:56:40 > 6:56:42This fella here is called an arowana.
6:56:42 > 6:56:46It's a pretty special fish, it can live for up to 20 years
6:56:46 > 6:56:49and it's quite expensive. It costs at £2,000 to £3,000.
6:56:49 > 6:56:51He's so special that sometimes
6:56:51 > 6:56:53they fit them with a microchip at the back of the head
6:56:53 > 6:56:55so if they go missing, the owner can still find them.
6:56:55 > 6:56:58But I don't think we had enough change in the bottom of our pond
6:56:58 > 6:57:01to afford one of these.
6:57:03 > 6:57:05These fellas are stingrays. Very beautiful.
6:57:05 > 6:57:09Look at the markings on that. They're actually related to sharks.
6:57:09 > 6:57:12Now, their bodies are made entirely of cartilage, no bone at all,
6:57:12 > 6:57:15and cartilage is the same stuff we have in the end of our noses,
6:57:15 > 6:57:17but I'm not going to stick my hand in,
6:57:17 > 6:57:18just in case they're in a bad mood.
6:57:18 > 6:57:22But tropical fish wouldn't survive in our pond,
6:57:22 > 6:57:24so I need to look at some that prefer cold water.
6:57:26 > 6:57:28Now, everybody knows and loves a goldfish
6:57:28 > 6:57:30and they can get really big.
6:57:30 > 6:57:33According to the Guinness World Records,
6:57:33 > 6:57:36the biggest one ever measured from tail to snout was 47.4 centimetres.
6:57:36 > 6:57:39Now, I think goldfish are the goal for us.
6:57:39 > 6:57:41I think they'll go in our pond perfectly,
6:57:41 > 6:57:44but maybe this one is a little too big,
6:57:44 > 6:57:47so I'm going to put him back and let him rejoin his friends.
6:57:48 > 6:57:50There you go, fella.
6:57:53 > 6:57:55This is perfect.
6:57:55 > 6:57:58Just what I wanted for the Blue Peter pond.
6:57:58 > 6:58:00Well, I'm back in the garden. I've got my fish and plants.
6:58:00 > 6:58:04Just got to wait a while for that to fill up now, and we can get going.
6:58:04 > 6:58:06Right, time to start planting.
6:58:11 > 6:58:14You might have frogs and toads or newts that want to go
6:58:14 > 6:58:16in and out the pond from time to time.
6:58:16 > 6:58:19So what we need to is build a little corridor from land to water.
6:58:19 > 6:58:22It's very, very simple. Well, I've got a lot of fish to put in the pond
6:58:22 > 6:58:25- and I think I need some help, but luckily I've got...- Chloe.
6:58:25 > 6:58:28- Keelagh.- Megan.- Noah.
6:58:28 > 6:58:29I think you should go first, Chloe,
6:58:29 > 6:58:32and just gently put him on top of the water in the bag.
6:58:32 > 6:58:34That's it, and you can let him go
6:58:34 > 6:58:36and hold the back of the bag like this.
6:58:36 > 6:58:38And let go of the front, brilliant.
6:58:38 > 6:58:41Do you want to go next? Gently lower him in. He looks good, doesn't he?
6:58:41 > 6:58:45Go on, then. That's it. So there you go. The first four fish in.
6:58:45 > 6:58:48Brilliant. OK, well, thanks very much.
6:58:48 > 6:58:50Did a brilliant job, released the fish
6:58:50 > 6:58:54and that is our Blue Peter garden pond officially completed.
6:58:54 > 6:58:57THEY CHEER
6:58:57 > 6:59:01And here it is, the new look Blue Peter pond. Isn't it lovely?
6:59:01 > 6:59:04And if you are wondering how much money was found, it's £39.96,
6:59:04 > 6:59:07it's all in this jar and it's all going to Children In Need.
6:59:07 > 6:59:10If you are going to visit the Blue Peter garden, by the way,
6:59:10 > 6:59:12please don't throw any more coins in the pond
6:59:12 > 6:59:14cos that's where the fish live now. Helen, what's still to come?
6:59:14 > 6:59:17Well, Barney, while you make your way back into the studio,
6:59:17 > 6:59:19I can tell you what's happening on today's show.
6:59:19 > 6:59:21Still to come, CBBC's Dick and Dom
6:59:21 > 6:59:25will be revealing their all-time favourite book,
6:59:25 > 6:59:27and the UK's freestyle scooter champions
6:59:27 > 6:59:31will be here to wow you with their slick tricks.
6:59:33 > 6:59:36Now, if you've been watching Blue Peter's big Olympic tour
6:59:36 > 6:59:38on Saturday mornings, you will know that Barney and I
6:59:38 > 6:59:41have been taking on four celebrity friends
6:59:41 > 6:59:43in a different Olympic sport each week.
6:59:43 > 6:59:45This week we headed to the tennis courts
6:59:45 > 6:59:48and Barney is desperate for you to see what happened.
6:59:48 > 6:59:52Here is your host, Football Focus' Dan Walker, to give you the low-down.
6:59:54 > 6:59:55Here are our competitors.
6:59:55 > 6:59:59She's going from strength to strength, classical singer Laura.
6:59:59 > 7:00:02Determined to hold on to his lead, Strictly dancer Brendan.
7:00:02 > 7:00:06Formerly of Emmerdale, pleased there's no more cycling, it's Adele.
7:00:06 > 7:00:09He's still super-relaxed and stylish, MC Romeo.
7:00:09 > 7:00:13Helen's got a spring in her step after winning BMX
7:00:13 > 7:00:17and he needs the points to stay in contention, it's Barney.
7:00:17 > 7:00:20Athletes, hello. We've had some fun so far but it's all about to change.
7:00:20 > 7:00:24You've been competing as men and women but the remaining events
7:00:24 > 7:00:26are about technique rather than power
7:00:26 > 7:00:28so you are all against each other.
7:00:28 > 7:00:32This is how this challenge works - it's human against machine.
7:00:32 > 7:00:35Ball machine.
7:00:35 > 7:00:38Each player will get 20 balls fired at them
7:00:38 > 7:00:41alternating between a forehand and backhand.
7:00:41 > 7:00:44The aim is to return as many as they can into the court
7:00:44 > 7:00:47where they'll score one point if it bounces in the service boxes,
7:00:47 > 7:00:51three points for the back of the court and, if they want to go crazy,
7:00:51 > 7:00:53five points if they get them between the tram lines.
7:00:53 > 7:00:56And we will not let our athletes see each other,
7:00:56 > 7:00:58so they won't know what score to beat.
7:01:00 > 7:01:04So it's Romeo to go first and he initially found it hard
7:01:04 > 7:01:08wasting a number of scoring opportunities.
7:01:08 > 7:01:11Soon he found his range with some consistent forehand
7:01:11 > 7:01:13and backhand strokes.
7:01:14 > 7:01:18He had good length via the baseline to score a lot of three point shots
7:01:18 > 7:01:21but no tram line five-pointers could cost him dear.
7:01:23 > 7:01:26Brendan tried to play it safe early on but was put off his stride
7:01:26 > 7:01:28by confusing his forehand and backhand.
7:01:28 > 7:01:30I'm sorry. Backhand.
7:01:30 > 7:01:33He also found the net, which made him very angry.
7:01:33 > 7:01:35Argh!
7:01:35 > 7:01:37He really wasn't making it easy for himself.
7:01:37 > 7:01:39He decided to aim for the tram lines
7:01:39 > 7:01:42to try and claw back some vital points.
7:01:42 > 7:01:45Will it be enough to beat Romeo?
7:01:45 > 7:01:47That was the worst performance I could have possibly done.
7:01:47 > 7:01:51I don't believe you. I think you have nailed it.
7:01:52 > 7:01:55Adele's turn now and she was caught out early
7:01:55 > 7:01:57by the speed of the ball machine.
7:01:57 > 7:01:59Some of her mishits actually ended up scoring.
7:01:59 > 7:02:03In trying to hit the ball harder, she certainly enjoyed herself
7:02:03 > 7:02:06but it didn't necessarily help with the points.
7:02:06 > 7:02:07Oh, five!
7:02:07 > 7:02:09She did find the tram lines once.
7:02:09 > 7:02:12Will it be enough to beat the others?
7:02:14 > 7:02:17- I cannot tell you how excited I am! - APPLAUSE
7:02:19 > 7:02:22Argh! That was so good!
7:02:22 > 7:02:25- Look how excited you are!- I can't believe it. Can't believe it.
7:02:27 > 7:02:29Laura was up next and had an excellent start
7:02:29 > 7:02:32scoring with her first six shots.
7:02:32 > 7:02:35Some were also in the five points area.
7:02:35 > 7:02:38She began to lose her rhythm halfway, through,
7:02:38 > 7:02:40trying a bit too hard and hitting the ball too long.
7:02:40 > 7:02:43So will her great early form be enough?
7:02:45 > 7:02:48If you tell them you've not done well, they will think you are lying.
7:02:48 > 7:02:50- Did I do that badly? - No, you didn't do...
7:02:50 > 7:02:53No, not at all, you did really well.
7:02:53 > 7:02:55So, Barney up next
7:02:55 > 7:03:00and a perfect start for him as he went straight for the tram lines.
7:03:00 > 7:03:03But after hitting a few out, he decided to play it safe.
7:03:05 > 7:03:08Some consistent scoring and good technique from Barney
7:03:08 > 7:03:11and he certainly left no margin for error with some shots.
7:03:11 > 7:03:14- This gives Barney a real chance. - Is that it?
7:03:14 > 7:03:17Look at that smile! He's got a wry smile.
7:03:17 > 7:03:21- Yeah, he's got a little smug smile. - Finally Barney's back on top!
7:03:21 > 7:03:23And finally it was Helen.
7:03:23 > 7:03:27She played it safe from the start, aiming for the middle of the court.
7:03:27 > 7:03:32There were very few mistakes and one five point shot,
7:03:32 > 7:03:35But a lot of her balls did drop short, losing her some vital points.
7:03:35 > 7:03:37So will it be enough?
7:03:38 > 7:03:42Athletes, I know you are desperate for the point revelation.
7:03:42 > 7:03:46With one point, having scored 13,
7:03:46 > 7:03:50it's Adele! She did enjoy it, though.
7:03:50 > 7:03:53Two points with 28...
7:03:53 > 7:03:55goes to Romeo.
7:03:56 > 7:04:0033 points was enough to get Brendan three points.
7:04:02 > 7:04:0440 points and four points...
7:04:04 > 7:04:06go to Laura.
7:04:07 > 7:04:10OK, so, 45 score,
7:04:10 > 7:04:12five points go to...
7:04:12 > 7:04:15Helen Skelton...
7:04:15 > 7:04:18- ALL CHEER - ..which means...
7:04:18 > 7:04:21Barney, 53, six points!
7:04:27 > 7:04:30Celebratory dance! Can I just say? The reason I'm so excited -
7:04:30 > 7:04:33the only thing I've ever won is a darts competition.
7:04:33 > 7:04:35That's cos I was playing against my five-year-old sister
7:04:35 > 7:04:36who couldn't reach the board.
7:04:36 > 7:04:39I get cross with him because he gets too harsh on himself.
7:04:39 > 7:04:42You are back in the game, we're back in the competition Barney.
7:04:42 > 7:04:44Thank you very much. How's that affected the leaderboard?
7:04:44 > 7:04:47Well, Brendan's still out in front. He's in gold position,
7:04:47 > 7:04:50Helen and Laura are in silver position, Romeo is in bronze,
7:04:50 > 7:04:52I've moved up a little bit. It's all to play for -
7:04:52 > 7:04:53three more challenges to go. ..Ow.
7:04:53 > 7:04:55- It's not over till it's over. - True dat.
7:04:55 > 7:04:57So make sure you check out Blue Peter's big Olympic tour,
7:04:57 > 7:05:00it continues on Saturday at nine o'clock.
7:05:00 > 7:05:02- I'm really too competitive, aren't I? - A little bit.
7:05:02 > 7:05:05From 10am on Saturday morning, we open our gates
7:05:05 > 7:05:08and invite you to a free event. You don't need a ticket,
7:05:08 > 7:05:11so come along and see us if you are in Essex.
7:05:11 > 7:05:12We'll be in Saffron Walden.
7:05:12 > 7:05:14Can we talk about the torch a little bit?
7:05:14 > 7:05:16You carried it last week, it's very exciting.
7:05:16 > 7:05:18Yes, we can show you exactly what happened
7:05:18 > 7:05:20when I carried the torch in Wolverhampton.
7:05:20 > 7:05:23Wolverhampton, thank you for your support. They adopted me.
7:05:23 > 7:05:25Everybody would, it's your smiley face.
7:05:25 > 7:05:27Let's talk about the summer. Let's talk about what you'll be doing.
7:05:27 > 7:05:30I have a picture in my head that you will be relaxing,
7:05:30 > 7:05:33sitting in your garden on a deckchair like this,
7:05:33 > 7:05:34reading your favourite book and earlier,
7:05:34 > 7:05:37we asked you to get in touch and talk about your favourite book.
7:05:37 > 7:05:39You have been doing that, thank you very much.
7:05:39 > 7:05:40Megan got in touch.
7:05:40 > 7:05:41That's the first time
7:05:41 > 7:05:43Barney's ever done that,
7:05:43 > 7:05:44climbed all the way up himself.
7:05:44 > 7:05:46See, we're all achieving something today, everybody.
7:05:46 > 7:05:50Megan, who is seven, loves Matilda, that's her favourite book.
7:05:50 > 7:05:52"The best bit is when Miss Honey
7:05:52 > 7:05:55"tells Matilda that Mrs Trunchbull is her auntie."
7:05:55 > 7:05:56I love Matilda. Good one.
7:05:56 > 7:05:58Meg's favourite book is the Hunger Games
7:05:58 > 7:06:00because you never know what is going to happen.
7:06:00 > 7:06:03It's a bit scary, though, isn't it? Harriet, who's ten, says,
7:06:03 > 7:06:05"My favourite book is the Jane Blonde series
7:06:05 > 7:06:07"because I love all the spying in it."
7:06:07 > 7:06:10Will says, "My favourite book is How To Train Your Dragon
7:06:10 > 7:06:13"cos it's really funny." Wouldn't it be great if you had a dragon?
7:06:14 > 7:06:16Now, some great recommendations there.
7:06:16 > 7:06:17If you're going on holiday,
7:06:17 > 7:06:20you might want to pick up a few of those.
7:06:20 > 7:06:22The reason we're talking about books is because last year,
7:06:22 > 7:06:24780,000 of you got involved in a reading project
7:06:24 > 7:06:26that saw three million books be read.
7:06:26 > 7:06:29This year, the project is called Story Lab
7:06:29 > 7:06:31and we're hoping that you are going to get involved with it.
7:06:31 > 7:06:34You might have heard about it in your school or your local library.
7:06:34 > 7:06:37This is the Story Lab. It's a big flat piece of card
7:06:37 > 7:06:40that's got stories all over it that you can turn into a 3D laboratory.
7:06:40 > 7:06:42And if you look on the outside of it,
7:06:42 > 7:06:44it's got various stories and cartoons and animations
7:06:44 > 7:06:46but there are certain squares that are missing.
7:06:46 > 7:06:49You need to fill them in and make those colourful
7:06:49 > 7:06:51by adding stickers to them and you can do that by reading books.
7:06:51 > 7:06:53The challenge is to read six over the summer.
7:06:53 > 7:06:56If you read two, you'll get a bronze sticker. ..Don't you dare do
7:06:56 > 7:06:59- what I think you are about to do! - I know!
7:06:59 > 7:07:05Silver is if you read four books and gold is if you read six or more.
7:07:05 > 7:07:08And once you've completed all those, stick your stickers on here
7:07:08 > 7:07:11take them into your library and they'll exchange these for these.
7:07:11 > 7:07:13A medal or a certificate.
7:07:13 > 7:07:16So if you read all the books, you will get your hands on one of those.
7:07:16 > 7:07:18We're really hoping you'll get involved.
7:07:18 > 7:07:21It doesn't matter if you don't like the books, just pass it to a friend
7:07:21 > 7:07:23and pick up another. It's all about reading.
7:07:23 > 7:07:24Go to the website...
7:07:25 > 7:07:29..or just pop down to your local library for your Story Lab kit.
7:07:29 > 7:07:31Now, though, it's time for Dick and Dom.
7:07:31 > 7:07:34- You love this bit, don't you? - Because it's my favourite story.
7:07:34 > 7:07:36Basically, we're going to try and smash
7:07:36 > 7:07:38how many people got involved last year, it was 750,000.
7:07:38 > 7:07:41- We want more involved. Here, Dick and Dom...- The dog's going to wee!
7:07:41 > 7:07:44..talk about their favourite story, George's Marvellous Medicine -
7:07:44 > 7:07:46- with a very strange grandma. What's he doing?- Not here!
7:07:51 > 7:07:55I mean, normally grandmas are lovely and sweet and kind
7:07:55 > 7:07:58- and smell of pretty flowers, don't they?- Here.
7:07:58 > 7:08:02Yeah. Well, not in this book.
7:08:02 > 7:08:04I mean, this gran is 100% the opposite.
7:08:04 > 7:08:07She shouts, she bullies, she eats slugs.
7:08:07 > 7:08:11She's got one of those puckered-up mouths that never smiles.
7:08:11 > 7:08:13Who'd want a grandma like that?
7:08:13 > 7:08:15Well, this lad George, yeah? He's got no choice.
7:08:15 > 7:08:19That horrible crinkly old bag is so horrible to him!
7:08:19 > 7:08:22- Until George comes up with a secret plan.- Exactly.
7:08:22 > 7:08:26And that's what this book is all about.
7:08:26 > 7:08:29Every day George's grandma has to take a special medicine
7:08:29 > 7:08:31so George decides to make her a brand-new medicine,
7:08:31 > 7:08:34so he runs around the farm where he lives,
7:08:34 > 7:08:36finding all sorts of weird ingredients.
7:08:36 > 7:08:39Yeah. Rotten banana skins, shoe polish.
7:08:41 > 7:08:44Shampoo. Extra hot chilli sauce - oh!
7:08:45 > 7:08:47Them!
7:08:47 > 7:08:49MIXTURE POPS
7:08:49 > 7:08:53And he makes a brand-new mixture that he hopes will give his grandma
7:08:53 > 7:08:55a big whopper of a surprise.
7:08:56 > 7:08:58Can you smell something funny?
7:08:58 > 7:08:59- Oh!- Urgh.
7:09:07 > 7:09:11You can really tell that the writer, Roald Dahl, is on George's side.
7:09:11 > 7:09:13This is one of my favourite parts of the book.
7:09:13 > 7:09:17"What mischief are you up to in there now?" Granny screeched.
7:09:17 > 7:09:19"I hear noises!"
7:09:19 > 7:09:22George thought it best not to answer this one,
7:09:22 > 7:09:24he found a long wooden spoon in a kitchen drawer
7:09:24 > 7:09:26and began stirring hard.
7:09:26 > 7:09:30The stuff in the pot got hotter and hotter.
7:09:30 > 7:09:35Soon, George started to get really excited about his wonderful mixture.
7:09:36 > 7:09:40And suddenly, George found himself dancing around the steaming pot
7:09:40 > 7:09:44chanting strange words that came into his head out of nowhere.
7:09:44 > 7:09:49"Fiery broth and witch's brew, foamy froth and riches blue,
7:09:49 > 7:09:55"fume and spume and spoondrift spray, fizzle, swizzle, shout hurray!
7:09:55 > 7:09:57"Watch it sloshing, squashing, sploshing,
7:09:57 > 7:10:00"hear it hissing, squishing and spitting,
7:10:00 > 7:10:02"Grandma better start to pray."
7:10:15 > 7:10:20Of course, if you want to know more, you'll have to read the book.
7:10:20 > 7:10:22Hang on. Where is the book?
7:10:22 > 7:10:25DICK CHOKES AND SPLUTTERS
7:10:25 > 7:10:27Oh, no.
7:10:28 > 7:10:32- It's amazing! - I know the book's amazing.
7:10:32 > 7:10:35- It's mind-blowing! - I know the book is mind-blowing.
7:10:35 > 7:10:38But now it's covered in goop.
7:10:47 > 7:10:49A bit more salt.
7:10:49 > 7:10:50Yeah, salt.
7:10:53 > 7:10:55Thank you very much to Dick and Dom.
7:10:55 > 7:10:58Next week, Kieron Richardson from Hollyoaks
7:10:58 > 7:11:00is going to be sharing his favourite book.
7:11:00 > 7:11:04Now Barney - where's he gone now? He's gone again.
7:11:04 > 7:11:06As you can see, I've come back outside the studio
7:11:06 > 7:11:09on this glorious sunny day to see something very cool happening.
7:11:09 > 7:11:12This is freestyle scooter-riding.
7:11:12 > 7:11:14This is Josh who's showing us what he can do at the moment.
7:11:14 > 7:11:17Josh, when you get a chance, pop over here. Hello, mate.
7:11:17 > 7:11:19- You all right?- I'm very good, this is exciting to watch.
7:11:19 > 7:11:21- You are a freestyle scooter rider? - Yeah.
7:11:21 > 7:11:23How does the freestyle part work?
7:11:23 > 7:11:26The freestyle part is basically getting on the scooter
7:11:26 > 7:11:28and doing different tricks and stunts.
7:11:28 > 7:11:33The thing about a scooter is, you've got handlebars and the deck
7:11:33 > 7:11:36so that means you can take tricks from a BMX, like bar spins,
7:11:36 > 7:11:39and from skate-boarding you can take board slides too,
7:11:39 > 7:11:42if you have stunt pegs and stuff,
7:11:42 > 7:11:44so you can do different grinds and stalls.
7:11:44 > 7:11:49And also a lot of the tricks and stuff we've invented ourselves,
7:11:49 > 7:11:53such as being able to flip the scooter and do bar twists and stuff.
7:11:53 > 7:11:56And once you have gone from being a solo rider who learns those tricks,
7:11:56 > 7:11:58- you then put it together as part of a team?- Yeah.
7:11:58 > 7:12:00How did Team Razor come about?
7:12:00 > 7:12:03Well, Team Razor kind of started in America at first
7:12:03 > 7:12:06and it was a small little group of riders.
7:12:06 > 7:12:09And as soon as they started making more scooters
7:12:09 > 7:12:11and getting their name out there,
7:12:11 > 7:12:13they decided to make a team in the UK
7:12:13 > 7:12:15and we were all picked to be part of the UK team,
7:12:15 > 7:12:17and do jams, demos and that sort of thing.
7:12:17 > 7:12:20Nice one. Josh, thank you very much for now.
7:12:20 > 7:12:23Off you go back to your stuff. Here comes Lewis down the ramp.
7:12:23 > 7:12:25Lewis is very experienced, been doing it for a long time.
7:12:25 > 7:12:26You started a while ago,
7:12:26 > 7:12:29but it started with a funny circumstance, didn't it?
7:12:29 > 7:12:31Yeah, it was a complete accident.
7:12:31 > 7:12:35I was in a car accident and broke my leg quite seriously,
7:12:35 > 7:12:39so it was broken for a long time, and I was 11 years old, so...
7:12:39 > 7:12:41Whoa! That was definitely worth a round of applause.
7:12:41 > 7:12:43That was amazing, well done.
7:12:43 > 7:12:45So really, it started from an accident
7:12:45 > 7:12:48but here you are all these years later performing.
7:12:48 > 7:12:51Yeah, I got too bored of crutches. I wanted to do something more active,
7:12:51 > 7:12:54- so I got on a scooter to get around. - What a great idea -
7:12:54 > 7:12:58rather than using crutches and being all boring, get yourself a scooter.
7:12:58 > 7:12:59Fantastic. Thank you very much.
7:12:59 > 7:13:02I'm going to call Nat in now, who's also had an injury on a scooter.
7:13:02 > 7:13:05- You're still suffering a little bit, aren't you?- Yeah.
7:13:05 > 7:13:07I am, yeah. On the road to recovery at the moment.
7:13:07 > 7:13:09- Doctor said ten weeks?- Yeah. - What did you do?
7:13:09 > 7:13:11I broke my ankle in three places.
7:13:11 > 7:13:13So it wasn't that nice, but surviving.
7:13:13 > 7:13:15Well, don't go back to those places.
7:13:15 > 7:13:17We wish you all the best on the road to recovery.
7:13:17 > 7:13:20Now, show me how to do something cos I'm dying to have a go.
7:13:20 > 7:13:23As you can see, I'm sporting this year's latest safety fashion.
7:13:23 > 7:13:27- Right, I'll show you how to do a bunny hop.- Bunny hop, what is that?
7:13:27 > 7:13:30It's where you basically just jump in the air.
7:13:30 > 7:13:32You've just got to get a bit of speed, pull up on the bars,
7:13:32 > 7:13:35jump in the air and land with both feet still on the deck.
7:13:35 > 7:13:38So both wheels come off the floor, not like a wheelie, then?
7:13:38 > 7:13:42- Yeah.- All right, well, do you want to show me first?- Sure.
7:13:42 > 7:13:44Just like that. OK. Dead easy.
7:13:47 > 7:13:50That was rubbish, I'm doing that again.
7:13:51 > 7:13:55Right. Here we go.
7:13:56 > 7:13:59Oh, so close!
7:13:59 > 7:14:02I could be here all day doing this but the experts are just to my left
7:14:02 > 7:14:05so let's hand over now to what is probably the most impressive thing
7:14:05 > 7:14:07I think I've seen on the show for a while. Team Razor.
7:14:42 > 7:14:44That was absolutely unbelievable.
7:14:44 > 7:14:48Congratulations, Razor, and thank you very much for coming along.
7:14:48 > 7:14:51Barney and I had to stay inside because somebody barks at scooters.
7:14:51 > 7:14:54And it's not me, is it? So we had to miss out on that one.
7:14:54 > 7:14:58Now, throughout the show, we have been asking you to get in touch
7:14:58 > 7:15:00and let us know what your favourite book is.
7:15:00 > 7:15:01Scarlett said that her favourite book
7:15:01 > 7:15:04is the Magic Far Away Tree because it's exciting
7:15:04 > 7:15:06and the children go to different lands in each chapter.
7:15:06 > 7:15:09- Oh, hello, scooter boy. - Hello. How are you doing?
7:15:09 > 7:15:12Katie says, "My favourite is the Chocolate Box Girls set.
7:15:12 > 7:15:14"I've read the Cherry Crush and the Marshmallow Skye
7:15:14 > 7:15:15"and can't wait for the rest."
7:15:15 > 7:15:17How amazing was that? Shame you couldn't be there.
7:15:17 > 7:15:19Last time you were barking at the scooters.
7:15:19 > 7:15:21Sam thought the spiders were interesting but scary
7:15:21 > 7:15:24at the same time, especially because they're poisonous.
7:15:24 > 7:15:27Jemima likes Harry Potter as it's action-packed and epic.
7:15:27 > 7:15:30Mia likes Diary Of A Wimpy Kid.
7:15:30 > 7:15:33Jessica, Amy and Florence - we love you - it says,
7:15:33 > 7:15:35"Hi, all. What a fantastic show."
7:15:35 > 7:15:38Thanks very much. You can let us know whatever you're thinking.
7:15:38 > 7:15:40I'm not sure there are many spider fans out there.
