:00:09. > :00:19.It is Thursday. It is 5. 30. Do we have a good show for you today! We

:00:20. > :00:29.have some stars and puppets from War Horse. See how Rad did it all when

:00:30. > :00:36.he went to meet an adventurous Australia who looks after baby

:00:37. > :00:49.kangaroos. All that is coming up on today's Blue Peter!

:00:50. > :01:00.Hello. Welcome to live Blue Peter. You can see us, but there's no

:01:01. > :01:08.Barney. It is the first episode where he's not here. He's rehearsing

:01:09. > :01:13.for panto. Oh, no, he isn't! ? Oh, yes he is. There's an animal theme

:01:14. > :01:20.today. We have a kangaroo. We have horses. We even have our own

:01:21. > :01:25.tortoise, Shelley, featuring on the show. We are live and we want to

:01:26. > :01:31.hear from you. Imagine if you could take your two favourite animals -

:01:32. > :01:40.combine them to make a new breed. Mine would be the sharilla - a shark

:01:41. > :01:49.and a gorilla. Mine would be a girrhino. A rhino and a giraffe. I

:01:50. > :01:52.think the sharilla would beat yours! Let us know what

:01:53. > :01:57.think the sharilla would beat yours! mix - and what special skills they

:01:58. > :02:03.think the sharilla would beat yours! better. Let us know your ideas, at:

:02:04. > :02:08.We know you will get involved. You always do it. You have done it so

:02:09. > :02:20.much this week. You sent us so much fabulous post. Look at the wall. My

:02:21. > :02:24.favourite is from this one, Radzi getting gunged. I love this one. It

:02:25. > :02:28.is from grace. Sh eis from Nottingham. She is only nine and

:02:29. > :02:32.done this water colour of us three. It makes me miss Barney!

:02:33. > :02:37.I like that! If you were watching last week then

:02:38. > :02:41.you will know about our brand new Doctor Who competition. The prize is

:02:42. > :02:54.epic. It is so cool! We have asked you to design a sonic device - it

:02:55. > :03:00.could be for Strax, Jenny Flint or Madame Vastra. There are some things

:03:01. > :03:06.to remember - first there is only one entry per person. Second only,

:03:07. > :03:11.you can only design one sonic device for one of the three characters. You

:03:12. > :03:17.have to be aged between six and 15. Oh! That rules us out! . The

:03:18. > :03:21.deadline is this Monday. Get them in as soon as you can! You don't have

:03:22. > :03:25.long. Make sure you make them bright, bold and beautiful. They

:03:26. > :03:31.have to look really, really good on camera. It is complicated. Check out

:03:32. > :03:37.the rules and download the Doctor Who form. It is in two pages. Like I

:03:38. > :03:42.said - it is a bit complicated, so head to the website. Whilst there,

:03:43. > :03:47.why not check out some of our other Doctor Who exclusives. You can see

:03:48. > :03:50.Barney showed you how to make this last week - some yummy Dalek

:03:51. > :04:01.cupcakes. You can last week - some yummy Dalek

:04:02. > :04:08.Let's talk kangaroo names. What would you get if you cross a sheep

:04:09. > :04:11.and a kangaroo? I don't know. A woolly jumper!

:04:12. > :04:16.I see what you're doing. Barney is gone - you are trying to do the

:04:17. > :04:22.jokes and they are still not funny! Speaking of jump yg, Radzi jumped at

:04:23. > :04:36.the chance to meet some offed kangaroos. These -- some kangaroos.

:04:37. > :04:43.These are very special. I am here in in Cambridgeshire. It helps to breed

:04:44. > :04:49.the animals and look after them. I am not here to spotted a

:04:50. > :04:53.particular species, I am here to meet an animal man. He looks after

:04:54. > :04:59.wild animals in his native Australia. He goes by the name of

:05:00. > :05:05.Kangaroo Dundee. You might recognise him from his BBC Two documentary -

:05:06. > :05:11.Kangaroo Dundee. He is a kangaroo guru and knows absolutely everything

:05:12. > :05:19.about them. He is a tough Australian, who hand raise raises

:05:20. > :05:23.orphaned Joeys. He is here to give me a fascinating insight into these

:05:24. > :05:31.fascinating creatures. Pleasure to meet you. The pleasure is all mine!

:05:32. > :05:33.In the series you call yourself "a kangaroo mother." Obviously you are

:05:34. > :05:40.a man and not a kangaroo. How does it work? When you look after an

:05:41. > :05:47.orphaned kangaroo, a lot is to carry it around in a case, to make it

:05:48. > :05:52.happy like a pouch. The one who feeds it milk is me. I call myself

:05:53. > :05:54."mum." I will raise him up and hopefully return him back to the

:05:55. > :05:58.bush when he's older. hopefully return him back to the

:05:59. > :06:03.kangaroos come out of the pouch, do they stay with their mothers? If you

:06:04. > :06:07.are a young boy, you are generally allowed to stay around the family.

:06:08. > :06:12.Later on the big male will come in and say, hey, get out! The boys all

:06:13. > :06:18.leave the families and they meet up together and create like a boy group

:06:19. > :06:27.- like a boy band. Let's think of One Direction!

:06:28. > :06:31.Later on, the big male kangaroos want a kick-boxing match. If they

:06:32. > :06:35.don't have any other big kangaroos to play with, they will try and play

:06:36. > :06:42.with you - like fight you. I've got a big male kangaroo at my sanctuary,

:06:43. > :06:47.called Roger. Roger is mad! This is why you're not allowed a pet

:06:48. > :06:53.kangaroo! Roger is an expert kick-boxer! He

:06:54. > :06:58.chases me everywhere! Funnily enough, I was Roger's mum

:06:59. > :07:06.about six years ago! . He now has no fear of people. When he wants a

:07:07. > :07:13.kick-boxing match, he picks on me! So what is it about these Australian

:07:14. > :07:19.mar soupals that he loves so much? Kangaroos are an amazing animal. The

:07:20. > :07:23.biggest land animal that hops. The biggest leap recorded continuously

:07:24. > :07:31.is eight metres. OK! That is a massive leap!

:07:32. > :07:36.I have gone into catch kangaroos that I am transporting a net. I have

:07:37. > :07:41.found the kangaroo - it is like catching a butterfly - they jump

:07:42. > :07:47.over my head at the last minute. They are amazing animals! Has life

:07:48. > :07:51.changed for you since the series went out? It has changed massively.

:07:52. > :07:56.Here I am in England, being invited to come over and be on your great

:07:57. > :07:59.show and it is about absolute privilege to be able to do that. It

:08:00. > :08:04.has been an honour to have you and especially for you at home, here is

:08:05. > :08:10.an exclusive clip of series two. Enjoy!

:08:11. > :08:20.The most recent editions to his family, Rex and Ruby have come out

:08:21. > :08:24.of bed to check out their new home. Until recently they had never left

:08:25. > :08:36.their mother's pouches. Now they are taking their first tentative steps

:08:37. > :08:48.on the floor of the shack. Like a child's first visit to an ice

:08:49. > :08:52.rink they are rooted to the stop! -- spot!

:08:53. > :08:58.Oh, they are so cute. If you love that, like I did, you can head to

:08:59. > :09:03.the website where you can find a Q and A session, with him asking your

:09:04. > :09:07.questions. Check that out after the show.

:09:08. > :09:13.It is time to meet a very different kind of Joey, from the West End, War

:09:14. > :09:15.Horse. I am so excited about this. Before this, let's see some of Joey

:09:16. > :09:39.in action. I, Albert, do solemnly swear that we

:09:40. > :09:45.shall be together again. Please welcome the gorgeous Joey and

:09:46. > :09:50.Lee, who playsal berlt in -- plays Albert in War Horse.

:09:51. > :09:53.Wow! That is

:09:54. > :09:56.Wow! thank you so much for

:09:57. > :09:57.Wow! Now, War Horse is based on the

:09:58. > :10:02.Wow! differences between the play and the

:10:03. > :10:06.book, do you think? The play is quite similar to the book. It is

:10:07. > :10:10.about a boy called Albert, his horse, Joey and how their

:10:11. > :10:16.relationship endures World War I. In the play we have other things which

:10:17. > :10:19.tell the story, like massive horse puppets, projections and 34 actors.

:10:20. > :10:24.It is absolutely beautiful, isn't it? You play Albert, the lead role.

:10:25. > :10:28.What is he like as a character? Because the play goes over six year,

:10:29. > :10:34.Albert goes from being a young boy, who does not have anything - doesn't

:10:35. > :10:38.have any friends, lives on a chicken farm and through Joey becomes a

:10:39. > :10:44.great land and goes over to World War I. These puppets are so

:10:45. > :10:51.impressive. How does Joey work? Split into three. Joey head, Joey

:10:52. > :10:54.heart and hind. Joey head is about focus and thinking. It shows what

:10:55. > :10:59.the horse's attention is, obviously by the direction he goes. The ears

:11:00. > :11:03.are really important, because when he... They kind of twitch and

:11:04. > :11:07.flicker. Like anyone who rides a horse knows that. The horse's

:11:08. > :11:12.thoughts can be shown by their ears. So, when he's angry, his ears were

:11:13. > :11:19.be sort of back. Joey! Naughty!

:11:20. > :11:23.I am sure he likes you. And then you have the horse heart, which shows

:11:24. > :11:29.breath and weight because obviously it is made out of bam boo and

:11:30. > :11:34.aluminium, so the weight of the horse is important. You have the

:11:35. > :11:40.hind, which is an important job. The hind has to make sure the trot is in

:11:41. > :11:44.step, so he moves like a horse. You can see what he's thinking by moving

:11:45. > :11:49.the tail. There's so much going on. It is amazing team work between the

:11:50. > :11:56.three people in inside Joey. We have seen the gooz. Or...

:11:57. > :12:00.three people in inside Joey. We have role like Joey, how long would

:12:01. > :12:04.three people in inside Joey. We have take to get his movements life-like?

:12:05. > :12:10.In the initial stages it is two weeks for them to work with expert

:12:11. > :12:14.pupeteers. They work with real horse trainers? They go to horse ranches

:12:15. > :12:19.and six weeks where they interact with humans and the stories. He can

:12:20. > :12:32.do a few moments. Can we see some now? What can he do? He can rather

:12:33. > :12:46.if you like. -- rear if you like. And And if you say "Way up, boy."

:12:47. > :12:52.Way up, boy. Try slower... Oh, and way up, boy.

:12:53. > :13:03.Oh! I will give you a hand, OK? Help me out. And way up boy.

:13:04. > :13:08.Good boy. He is absolutely stunning. Lee, thank you so much for coming in

:13:09. > :13:14.today and for bringing the gorgeous Joey with you. Good luck for the

:13:15. > :13:18.tour. Thank you for a fantastic show in London. I have seen it - it is

:13:19. > :13:23.amazing! Do you know what is crazy about this

:13:24. > :13:29.is after a few moments you don't notice there are humans inside Joey.

:13:30. > :13:36.We've had a horse and a goes, even kangaroos. The next an malyou like -

:13:37. > :13:42.I -- the next animal you like - it is Shelley the tortoise. Winter is

:13:43. > :13:47.very much upon us. For Shelley, what that means is she a goes into

:13:48. > :13:52.hibernation. Lindsey had to go and tuck her in.

:13:53. > :14:00.Hello. The Blue Peter team told me that Shelley was going into

:14:01. > :14:08.hibernation and needed tucking in. I have my PJs, my One Direction

:14:09. > :14:15.book... . You have the wrong idea. Come in. Shelley has been a Blue

:14:16. > :14:21.Peter pet since 2004. Every winter she goes into hibernation. It is

:14:22. > :14:25.when the bodies of some of of animals slow down. This is Marina,

:14:26. > :14:30.she looks after Shelley. How do you know when a tortoise is ready for

:14:31. > :14:35.hibernation, apart from looking sleepy, like she does. She has not

:14:36. > :14:39.eaten for about three weeks now. Why not - she must be hungry? She

:14:40. > :14:43.doesn't need to eat so much because because she's not tearing around in

:14:44. > :14:49.the hot sunshine. Also it gives their stomach a chance to empty. She

:14:50. > :14:54.needs to hibernate with an empty stomach. Is she allowed to drink?

:14:55. > :14:59.Yes, you should always offer fresh water. She has the choice if she

:15:00. > :15:05.wants to. Then she's ready for a big nap. Hopefully. Shelley hibernates

:15:06. > :15:10.using the double box method. You need one big one, one small one and

:15:11. > :15:15.a lot of shredded newspaper. First, you need to fill your large box with

:15:16. > :15:19.shredded newspapers. I will move some across into the small box, so

:15:20. > :15:24.when we put our small box inside the larger one, we can press that down

:15:25. > :15:27.and then get some of our extra newspaper and just put that around

:15:28. > :15:31.the outside. And that newspaper is going to keep

:15:32. > :15:37.your tortoise nice and insulated and protected from the cold.

:15:38. > :15:44.I have brought along some of your post, including some cheeky drawings

:15:45. > :15:48.that we have done. So, that is looking good and about

:15:49. > :15:53.ready to go. That doesn't mean if you have a tortoise you leave it

:15:54. > :16:04.until it wakes up. Oh, no! Here are three top tips to ensure your sleepy

:16:05. > :16:09.friend gets a good sleep. Don't put on the floor. Keep the temperature

:16:10. > :16:13.perfect. Rats and mice will eat almost

:16:14. > :16:17.everything, including your box aevend your tortoise. Check your box

:16:18. > :16:22.every couple of days for any nibbling. The box is decorated. It

:16:23. > :16:29.is looking good. Is it time to get Shelley in there? I think so. Put

:16:30. > :16:34.her down the bottom. Goodbye, Shelley. Cover it over. It is nice

:16:35. > :16:39.and dark in there. Is it OK to leave her there. I will keep a close check

:16:40. > :16:45.on her. How long will she sleep for? They can sleep up to 12 weeks. That

:16:46. > :16:53.is a huge nap. I am quite jel low. Enjoy it. Have a good sleep,

:16:54. > :16:58.Shelley! I wonder what she dreams when she

:16:59. > :17:04.hibernates. Today's show is all about the lovely

:17:05. > :17:09.Shelley. We love Shelley so much, we dedicated a whole episode to our

:17:10. > :17:15.pet. We will follow her on her holiday. Later on I will show you

:17:16. > :17:20.how to make a Shelley puppet... She looks so cosy. If you hope to stay

:17:21. > :17:28.warm and cosy, then you will probably wear one of these - hats,

:17:29. > :17:32.scarf, gloves. We will show you how to customise your winter

:17:33. > :17:41.accessories. Today I am joined by Tegan, Jessica,

:17:42. > :17:47.Ethan and Liam. You need a fork. You need some wool I can be any colour.

:17:48. > :17:50.-- wool. It can be any colour. Check out the website,

:17:51. > :17:53.bbc.co.uk/bluepeter, if you need any details. For now, sit back, relax

:17:54. > :17:56.and let us show you have details. For now, sit back, relax

:17:57. > :18:01.some great pom-poms. You details. For now, sit back, relax

:18:02. > :18:05.wool and cut, actually before you cut it, start to put it around the

:18:06. > :18:09.fork - that is easier. You need to bend it around the fork like that.

:18:10. > :18:15.You can do that quite a few times. How are you getting on down there,

:18:16. > :18:19.guys? . All right. Have you gone for red? Yes, because I like Manchester

:18:20. > :18:25.United. You are making it individual. I like that. What about

:18:26. > :18:30.you, Ethan. Iic ped green and yellow, because at night it -- I

:18:31. > :18:35.picked green and yellow because at night it might look good. The more

:18:36. > :18:39.you wrap around your fork, the bigger your pom-pom will end up. I

:18:40. > :18:45.have wrapped that up around 30 times. I will stop there. Get your

:18:46. > :18:49.scissors - leave about an inch of wool, like so. A couple of

:18:50. > :18:55.centimetres, like that. Then this is the fiddly bit. You need to get

:18:56. > :18:59.another bit of wool. I am going to use one colour. Cut about that much.

:19:00. > :19:05.Just a few centimetres. Then you need to get it through the middle

:19:06. > :19:09.prong of the fork. It is fiddly. Once you get it through, it should

:19:10. > :19:13.look something like that. Once you have done that, pull it through like

:19:14. > :19:17.so. Get an adult to help if it is fiddly. Then you need to wind that

:19:18. > :19:22.through the middle of the prong. There we go! Now, you need to tie it

:19:23. > :19:28.in a knot, just to keep it steady there.

:19:29. > :19:35.Nice and tight. Girls, what will you use your pom-poms for? I might

:19:36. > :19:41.decorate my gym leotard, or when I wrap up presents put them on the

:19:42. > :19:47.wrapping paper. What about you, Jessisy ka? Probably for make --

:19:48. > :19:52.Jessica? Probably for making cards and maybe for a ring. I can see you

:19:53. > :19:55.have a ring on - I like that - nice and bright. Now you need to slip it

:19:56. > :20:01.off the fork. Slip it off like that. and bright. Now you need to slip it

:20:02. > :20:05.Like so - holding your thumb in place. Tighten your knot, nice and

:20:06. > :20:11.tight. This will keep the pom-pom together, like so. I will go for a

:20:12. > :20:15.double knot. Oh, look, Ethan is ahead of the game. Then you need to

:20:16. > :20:22.get snipping to make it look like a pom-pom. This is the fun bit! Have

:20:23. > :20:27.you finished? Liam's has gone wrong. They look cool if they gof wrong

:20:28. > :20:31.though! -- if they go wrong though. Get your

:20:32. > :20:38.scissors into the loops and snip around. This is when it starts to

:20:39. > :20:44.look really pom-pommy - if that is a word! Careful of your fingers. Once

:20:45. > :20:50.you go around, trim it and get a pair of scissors that work. That

:20:51. > :20:55.might help! Fan it out like that. How good is that? I am going to...

:20:56. > :21:00.It is like giving you a little haircut there. I need it to fit this

:21:01. > :21:05.thing on. This is perfect for the winter. Barney wept to meet some

:21:06. > :21:08.young sport -- went to meet some young sport stars - it is quick and

:21:09. > :21:13.very fast. They are not animals, but they are

:21:14. > :21:21.definitely beasts on the water. Check this out!

:21:22. > :21:25.Powerboating is an up and coming extreme sport, where you strap

:21:26. > :21:29.yourself into a specially-designed boat, stick a motor on the back of

:21:30. > :21:32.it and you can start at nine years old. I want one!

:21:33. > :21:37.Now, I have never been in a powerboat before. I will need some

:21:38. > :21:42.help. This is Jason. He'll show me the ropes. First things first, it

:21:43. > :21:47.looks intense, but fun as well. It is great fun. We have little boats

:21:48. > :21:52.that do 40 miles per hours, where the juniors start. It goes to the

:21:53. > :21:56.fast boats. If someone wants to get involved, is it easy? Yes, you can

:21:57. > :21:59.fast boats. If someone wants to get go to a local club, try a boat. If

:22:00. > :22:03.you go to a local club, try a boat. If

:22:04. > :22:07.I am only here because it is my job to be here. I don't necessarily need

:22:08. > :22:11.to go in the boat F there was training available, you are a

:22:12. > :22:16.trainer, and maybe an outfit to put on. I wouldn't mind having a go.

:22:17. > :22:23.Let's get you suited up and let's have a go. This is the boat? This is

:22:24. > :22:27.the boat. This is one of the GT-15 boats. You can race in this, nine up

:22:28. > :22:32.wards. It does about 40 miles per hour. It has that stream-lined,

:22:33. > :22:38.Formula One thing going on, hasn't it? It has a foot throttle like a

:22:39. > :22:45.car. If more you press that, the faster it goes. Sat nav - glove box?

:22:46. > :22:53.No. None of that. This is safety equipment. Grab the life jacket.

:22:54. > :22:58.Attached is a cord. That plugs in here. OK? And that has to be in for

:22:59. > :23:02.the engine to run. If that comes out, the engine stops. Sure.

:23:03. > :23:07.Now I have been shown around the boat, it is time to see what it can

:23:08. > :23:11.do. I am starting off slow. Jason soon gets my confidence up from the

:23:12. > :23:19.shore. OK, try full throttle now. Oh, yes,

:23:20. > :23:25.here we go! Just ease off a little. I don't want

:23:26. > :23:30.to ease off! I'm having fun! So, that is training over. I have

:23:31. > :23:35.done a few Sir it ises - four or five. I feel confident. The corners

:23:36. > :23:39.are getting tighter. Also my starts were getting better. That is me

:23:40. > :23:43.trained up officially. Now it is time to see how I ride when other

:23:44. > :23:50.people are in boats next to me. They are some of the fastest and youngest

:23:51. > :24:09.powerboat racers in the UK. Harvey, Tiegen, Ellie got,

:24:10. > :24:12.powerboat racers in the UK. Chloe. Why do dha love -- do they

:24:13. > :24:18.love this sport? My dad used to race as well. He kind of brought us into

:24:19. > :24:22.it. The speeds are amazing. I like to compete with my friends. It is

:24:23. > :24:28.fast. And it is fun. They are the competition. Now, it is time to test

:24:29. > :24:34.my skills! Let's see how much I have learnt from Jason. I am ready when

:24:35. > :24:40.you are. In the first heat I am in the water with three of them. I get

:24:41. > :24:44.off to a great start. But, on the last lap, it all goes

:24:45. > :24:50.wrong! No! Elliot is overtaking me! I was

:24:51. > :24:57.doing so well on the last lap. They are all going for it!

:24:58. > :25:03.I am officially last. There's the chequered flag!

:25:04. > :25:08.I was the best loser out of all of them... . Definitely. I have

:25:09. > :25:16.achieved something... . Haven't I? That was fun! Again, please! In the

:25:17. > :25:23.second heat I am in the water with the others - let's hope I do better

:25:24. > :25:35.this time. Oh, no, it's going to happen again!

:25:36. > :25:39.Third place - I'll take that! So, that was my introduction to

:25:40. > :25:43.powerboating. How do you think it went? You went pretty well in your

:25:44. > :25:49.last heat, but not as well in your first. It was pretty rubbish. I came

:25:50. > :25:56.last by quite a long way. Do you think I could make it as part of the

:25:57. > :26:01.crew? ALL: Yes. Did I come third, or did you let me?

:26:02. > :26:04.crew? ALL: Yes. Did I come third, or well. He did. I like the hat so

:26:05. > :26:08.much, I am keeping it on. It is strange - it is not that cold in

:26:09. > :26:13.here. If you want to see more of Barney in action on the water, head

:26:14. > :26:20.to our website, bbc.co.uk/bluepeter. You can play the game jet boat

:26:21. > :26:26.Barney. You get to launch him in a jet ski. Try and get the longest

:26:27. > :26:30.distance possible. If you go to the back stage diary, you will see a

:26:31. > :26:40.leaderboard, where we have all our friends. At the top is Connor. What

:26:41. > :26:44.is the top CBBC presenter. You can try and beat my score. It is nearly

:26:45. > :26:50.the end of the show. We have time to read out your comments. We do! We

:26:51. > :26:58.asked you to send in what animals you would 6 mix together. I would

:26:59. > :27:04.combine a pig and hippo and call it Pippo. This one, a tiger and a panda

:27:05. > :27:11.because they are mine and my sister's favourite animals. I would

:27:12. > :27:18.cross a cat and alligator and a baboon and call it a calicatoon. If

:27:19. > :27:22.I had one, I would do a Jaguar running fast and a kangaroo - a

:27:23. > :27:28.jumpy breed and it would be very cool! It would be. That's almost all

:27:29. > :27:32.we have time for this week's show. Next week we will tell you the short

:27:33. > :27:37.list of the Blue Peter Book Awards 2014 and we will be joined here in

:27:47. > :27:54.about their Christmas traditions. We will show you how to make this CBBC

:27:55. > :27:59.Christmas card. You can custom miez it with photos -- customise

:28:00. > :28:00.photos of your friends and family. See
