:00:16. > :00:23.the scenes access to a record-breaking 14-loop roller

:00:23. > :00:27.coaster. These might look priceless but they are made out of tin foil.

:00:27. > :00:32.All new animation epic will be hitting cinema screens soon. One of

:00:32. > :00:42.the stars with a slug. We've got some gooey gastropods here just for

:00:42. > :00:55.

:00:55. > :01:01.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE What was that? I don't know, but it

:01:01. > :01:07.is exciting. Welcome to Blue Peter, a totally lye show. For example in

:01:07. > :01:13.rehearsal I didn't put my hand on Helen's nose and make a sound like

:01:13. > :01:18.this. Hello! I want to talk about what scares people, because we have

:01:18. > :01:22.some experience in this field. later Barney and I will be rolling a

:01:22. > :01:27.roller coaster with 14 loops, and then talking about the science

:01:27. > :01:35.behind why you got scared. That got us thinking, what scares you? Let us

:01:35. > :01:42.know what scares you. I don't really like rats, because of the long

:01:42. > :01:47.tails. I know some of you probably have them as pets, but urgh.

:01:47. > :01:55.really don't like them either. I really don't like the dark. Make it

:01:55. > :01:59.stop, make it stop. I really don't mind the dark. What scares you, get

:01:59. > :02:08.in touch, e-mail bluepeter@bbc.co.uk. Two people

:02:08. > :02:12.who've been in touch already are Ansa and Alix. They have three Blue

:02:12. > :02:19.Peter badges. They've just earned a green Blue Peter badge because they

:02:19. > :02:25.sent us this. It is a badge made entirely out of foil. They used a

:02:25. > :02:29.chocolate bar wrapper and a mint wrapper. Thank you ladies, we hope

:02:29. > :02:34.you enjoy your green Blue Peter badges. Have a look at these

:02:34. > :02:38.fantastic objects. They look like solid silver but they are made of

:02:38. > :02:44.foil! Please welcome one of the artists, Daniel Russell, who made

:02:44. > :02:52.these for us. Hello.Daniel, I can't get my head round how you've done

:02:52. > :03:00.this. How did you manage to create these in so much detail? I'm working

:03:00. > :03:08.with the National Trust. This is a replica for a water holder, and the

:03:08. > :03:12.pigs were made by sculpting the pigs from clay and using tools made of

:03:12. > :03:15.wood to compress into all the gaps. So you scored in all the hair and

:03:15. > :03:20.things like that? Yes.I particularly love these forks. I

:03:20. > :03:24.came over to pick up one of these forks. I thought it was real and

:03:24. > :03:27.then I realised I could do this. That is not going to cut up your

:03:28. > :03:32.steak is it, because it is made entirely of foil. How have you done

:03:32. > :03:37.that? It is pretty easy. You get a normal fork and wrap it in tin foil.

:03:37. > :03:42.The again using the tools to smooth in all the gaps and things, you then

:03:42. > :03:46.remove it from the fork and fold the edges in, and finish it off a little

:03:46. > :03:50.bit. And then take out the fork? Yes. If you are a rascal and you

:03:50. > :03:54.want to play a trick on your friends and family, you could do that and

:03:54. > :03:59.lay the table and nobody would be able to eat anything! One of the

:03:59. > :04:05.techniques you have a is embossing. How did you manage to create this

:04:05. > :04:11.street scene? You print a picture and stick it on to the tin foil with

:04:11. > :04:18.a bit of tape. I used a knife and a recaller to trace. You can use --

:04:18. > :04:26.and a ruler to trace. I'm going to invite my artistic friends now,

:04:26. > :04:32.because we are going to have a go. I'm stumbling around, that's because

:04:32. > :04:38.of Maddison. Daniel is so tall. I've been told you are very artistic.

:04:38. > :04:45.Tomas, how artistic are you? On a scale of one two ten I would

:04:45. > :04:49.probably be a nine. A nine? That's confidence. Is he that good? On a

:04:49. > :04:55.scale of one to ten I think he is scale of one to ten I think he is

:04:55. > :05:00.about 200! These guys are good. Good. I knew you were artistic,

:05:00. > :05:05.because your art teacher sent us a picture. We haven't got paintbrushes

:05:05. > :05:08.for you today but we have got some tools for you. We are hoping that

:05:08. > :05:12.you are going to have a bit of a go throughout today's show. We are

:05:12. > :05:20.setting you a challenge. We are going to have a go at embossing,

:05:20. > :05:26.creating something like Daniel's. You can do any design you want. If

:05:26. > :05:31.you are not 200 out of ten like Tomas, you can go to to Blue Peter

:05:31. > :05:34.website after the show - bbc.co.uk/bluepeter. I will leave

:05:34. > :05:38.you with Daniel to decide what you are going to create. We'll look at

:05:38. > :05:43.them at the end of the show. This is one of those things that's going to

:05:43. > :05:47.fill our post boxes by the end of the week. You love getting involved

:05:47. > :05:54.and being creative. We like to get involved as well. We were given the

:05:54. > :06:02.chance to help build the UK's newest roller coaster. I have to say thank

:06:02. > :06:09.you to Josephine, but we were already on it. Take a look. Roller

:06:09. > :06:19.coaster! They really are the King of the theme park. Every year they get

:06:19. > :06:19.

:06:19. > :06:25.big bigger... Faster... And more exciting. There are more than 160

:06:25. > :06:29.roller coasters in the UK. With loops, drops, twists, bumps, rolls,

:06:29. > :06:34.tunnels and plenty of surprise they are all designed for maximum

:06:34. > :06:41.exhilaration. But those though ride them are lulls looking for the next

:06:41. > :06:45.-- are always looking for the next b a adrenaline rush. The latest

:06:45. > :06:51.addition is being built here at Alton Towers. This is the

:06:51. > :06:56.construction site for Secret Weapon seven, the code name for a new 18

:06:56. > :07:02.million ride which when it opens will be a record-breaker. What's

:07:02. > :07:05.going on here is a closely guarded secret, but Blue Peter's been given

:07:05. > :07:10.exclusive access. This roller coaster is so top secret nobody

:07:11. > :07:15.really wanted to talk about it. We'll see about that. To get the

:07:15. > :07:18.inside information about this project I'm meeting the boss of

:07:18. > :07:24.rides, Terry.ments his job to oversee every bit of construction

:07:25. > :07:31.work in this muddy pit. There's a certain rule about not building this

:07:31. > :07:35.above the trees. Why is that? in a conservation area, so we don't

:07:35. > :07:38.want to go over the tree canopy. The local community can't see the ride

:07:38. > :07:43.from anywhere around the boundary of from anywhere around the boundary of

:07:43. > :07:48.the site. In order to do that we have to go down. If you wanted a

:07:48. > :07:53.really tall ride, would you dig deeper? Yes, that's the answer. What

:07:53. > :07:59.is it about this ride that's better? This will be the longest ride at the

:07:59. > :08:03.Alton tower's resort. To make it a world's first we will invert our

:08:03. > :08:12.riders 14 times during the cycle. They will go up side down 14 times

:08:12. > :08:15.on the ride. If you need any help, I would love to get involved. We are

:08:16. > :08:21.powering 18 tonnes of concrete. to get my hands dirty. I'm building

:08:21. > :08:26.a roller coaster. It is quite a major and very hard thing, because

:08:26. > :08:31.all the concrete has to fill this space and your guys have to stand

:08:31. > :08:38.here doing. This once the found agencies are set, bolting together

:08:38. > :08:42.the metal coaster track in theory is simple. Except enit snows. Because

:08:42. > :08:48.that delays work. The cold weather is holding us back a little bit. We

:08:49. > :08:53.are still progressing and we are doing OK. 16 weeks ago I was on this

:08:53. > :08:56.site to help lay concrete into the foundations, so today I thought I

:08:56. > :09:02.would see how my little patch of concrete is doing. Apparently it is

:09:02. > :09:08.really well. They've stuck a roller coaster in it! I'm helping the team

:09:08. > :09:15.to put the ride together. I'm driving a crane. Push that forward

:09:15. > :09:20.nice and steady and you will feel it start to lower. There you go.

:09:21. > :09:26.done. Well done. Thanks mate, that was amazing. A piece of track is now

:09:26. > :09:30.in place. You've only got to do that another 400 times. But building a

:09:30. > :09:34.brand-new roller coaster doesn't start with mechanical machines and a

:09:34. > :09:44.massive hole. It begins in a much smaller space, someone's head. One

:09:44. > :09:53.

:09:53. > :09:58.of the people who the name is with me. This park is all about making

:09:58. > :10:02.Britain smile, so there's lots of optical illusions and camera

:10:02. > :10:08.trickery. We develop everything as one package to maximise the effect

:10:08. > :10:12.of this ride. And you've made it more scary by putting a spider above

:10:12. > :10:16.it. This stretches over parts of the track and has lots of effects, so

:10:16. > :10:20.when you are on the ride you get sprayed with water, you get tickled,

:10:21. > :10:23.flashed with light. All that sort of thing, to really enhance the

:10:23. > :10:31.psychological side of the appearance. Apparently I have a bit

:10:31. > :10:36.of a job today? Yes, we've got some finishing touches to do. Brilliant,

:10:36. > :10:43.if it comes to finishing touches on that, I'm your man. This metal

:10:43. > :10:53.spider is key to the Smiler's theming. I'm having a riveting time

:10:53. > :10:57.putting the finishing touches to the spider's legs. The Gigola is ready.

:10:57. > :11:03.It has been such a brilliant journey watching this roller coaster built,

:11:03. > :11:07.and I've played a little part in building it. The next I'm I'm going

:11:07. > :11:13.to be here I'm going to be one of the first members of public to ride

:11:13. > :11:16.it. I cannot wait. And you can find out later in the show how Barney and

:11:16. > :11:25.I get on when we test that roller coaster.

:11:25. > :11:30.If you cast your mind back a few weeks, I surprised Barney. I entered

:11:30. > :11:33.you in a trombone competition on 24th May, so you've got a few weeks

:11:33. > :11:41.to learn a new instrument. This trombone you've got to learn to

:11:41. > :11:48.play. You've got to be kidding!It is a real competition. He genuinely

:11:48. > :11:52.had no idea. He's been having a crash course in the trombone.

:11:52. > :11:57.competition is a week away and it is very difficult. If you have brass

:11:58. > :12:03.lessons you will know how you make your lips loose or tight. That takes

:12:03. > :12:11.a lot of doing, normally a year, my teacher said, and I've got just

:12:11. > :12:21.three weeks. You can do it.Here we go. That was just a sound effect.

:12:21. > :12:24.

:12:24. > :12:28.believe in you. I don't know the next two notes.

:12:28. > :12:34.very impressed. It is not easy to learn a new instrument and he's got

:12:34. > :12:40.to do it in two weeks. My lips are killing me. Thank you for all the

:12:40. > :12:44.messages you've been sending to me, they were supportive and it is

:12:44. > :12:50.really helping me. Last week Helen had a bit of a surprise. This is a

:12:50. > :12:55.challenge like no other. It is by no means an easy one. I don't run

:12:55. > :12:59.through rivers with the Marines! I had to run six miles with the

:12:59. > :13:02.marines in big heavy military boots. That's not even the actual

:13:02. > :13:06.challenge. That was an assessment to see if I'm fit enough and prepared

:13:06. > :13:11.to take on the challenge. Of course you are. I don't know if I'm

:13:11. > :13:16.prepared, but in I way. A bit of support would be nice. If you want

:13:16. > :13:20.to send Helen a message on the board, please do -

:13:20. > :13:26.bluepeter@bbc.co.uk. How is it going, Maddy? Perfect. That is very

:13:27. > :13:36.good. Can you make me a sign for my bedroom door, which says brothers

:13:36. > :13:42.get out? I will give you something nice. What?I've got some jelly.

:13:42. > :13:49.What flavour? Strawberry. Done. Thank you. You've got to strike a

:13:49. > :13:54.deal on a live show. We love it when you get in touch. We do.Last week

:13:54. > :14:01.Stooshe came in to decorate sunglasses with us and Amy from

:14:01. > :14:07.Merseyside sent us these. I think these are fantastic. This matches my

:14:08. > :14:16.outfit. Thank you Amy. Not just physical sunglasses but pictures

:14:16. > :14:21.Alice stuck some buttons and beads to hers. Thank you. Thank you for

:14:21. > :14:25.these, Finlay. All the details are on the Blue Peter website -

:14:25. > :14:29.bbc.co.uk/bluepeter. It is not just glasses that are

:14:29. > :14:34.being sent in. I love to take photographs, so Megan has made me my

:14:34. > :14:39.very own camera, complete with lens. When you detach it underneath is a

:14:39. > :14:46.picture of me. Megan, I love this. Thank you. Megan, he was so excited

:14:46. > :14:50.when he got that. I was equally quited when I got this necklace. But

:14:50. > :14:55.I couldn't wear it, as it would bang on my microphone.

:14:55. > :15:00.I want to say thank you to Charlotte. If you turn over the

:15:00. > :15:06.front page it has me and Barney on the front, Barney with his cameras,

:15:06. > :15:10.me doing high-wire walking, Shelley and the dogs. And here she is in all

:15:11. > :15:17.her glory. Can I take a picture of that please? Thank you, I will save

:15:17. > :15:22.that later. This is Olivia's picture, the Blue Peter family.

:15:22. > :15:32.There's me, my sister Helen and Socks and Cookie, who aren't here at

:15:32. > :15:32.

:15:32. > :15:36.the moment, but they will be appearing at the suss suss suss --

:15:36. > :15:40.Suffolk and Norfolk 50th Championship Cat Show. If you have

:15:40. > :15:46.sent us something and we haven't mentioned you, keep an eye on the

:15:46. > :15:50.wall of fame, because you might see yourself or your work here. We

:15:50. > :16:00.mentioned earlier we were going to have some slimy guests today. That's

:16:00. > :16:10.because of a new movie out next week called Epic. This is about a slug

:16:10. > :16:10.

:16:10. > :16:15.call called Mup. Thanks Marti. Obviously they are

:16:15. > :16:21.quite friendly and cartoony but this is what real slugs look like. If you

:16:21. > :16:30.hear parents or a grown-up talking about slugs, they normally refer to

:16:30. > :16:38.them as pests, because they eat their plants, but with me is Mike

:16:38. > :16:43.Dilger. So slugs are just pets? they perform an important job in the

:16:43. > :16:52.garden. A lot of them break down plants and eat carrion, dead

:16:52. > :16:57.animals, mammals and birds. They can move very slowly and catch it and

:16:57. > :17:02.munch it. This leopard slug even eats other slugs. So they are there

:17:02. > :17:07.to play a much bigger part in the eco-system? They certainly are. And

:17:07. > :17:14.lots of things eat slugs as well. Blackbirds, song thrushes,

:17:14. > :17:22.hedgehogs, moles, the works. I've heard the word gastropod. I love it

:17:22. > :17:30.when you talk Latin. Gastromeans stomach and pod is foot. It looks

:17:30. > :17:34.like it is slide sliding around on its belly but it moves around on its

:17:34. > :17:41.foot, using slime. If you get slime on your fingers, don't wash your

:17:41. > :17:49.hands. Water gets absorbed in the slime. Dry your hands and you get

:17:49. > :17:55.these big balls of mucous. You can get rid of them. You don't see many

:17:56. > :18:03.on the ground. They all hide don't they? They come out when it is

:18:03. > :18:13.moist. That's when they like it. 95% are below the ground and only 5%

:18:13. > :18:17.above the ground. We have a series call called Grow it, Cook it, Eat

:18:17. > :18:22.it. We want slugs in the garden but not to eat what we are growing. What

:18:22. > :18:26.can we do to prevent that? Don't use slug pellets, because they are

:18:26. > :18:34.horrible. The slugs eat them and the birds eat the slugs and they die.

:18:34. > :18:41.This is copper. If you wrap it around this plant pot, it emits a

:18:41. > :18:50.weak direct cal charge and they don't like it -- a weak electrical

:18:50. > :18:56.charge and they don't like it. Slugs really don't like egg shells, so

:18:56. > :19:05.they will avoid it. It is like walking on gravel in bare feet. Not

:19:05. > :19:10.pleasant. The herbs are doing OK. The chives are good, the basil is

:19:10. > :19:14.good. That's because no slugs have been near them. Thank you Mike.

:19:14. > :19:17.Moving from something that's slow to something very fast. You've already

:19:17. > :19:21.seen how the roller coaster was built. Now it is time to test it.

:19:21. > :19:26.For this I needed my very good friend, because I was a little bit

:19:26. > :19:31.scared. After 3,000 hours of hard work, with 700 tonnes of steel, over

:19:31. > :19:38.a kilometre of track and the 31,000 bolts holding it together, the

:19:38. > :19:48.Smiler is ready to ride. I brought Helen along to see which one of us

:19:48. > :19:50.

:19:50. > :19:54.is the biggest adrenaline addict. 14 loops in 165 seconds. This is

:19:54. > :20:02.Professor Brendan Walker. He's here to investigate how this ride plays

:20:02. > :20:11.with our emotions. Meet Professor Walker. Hi Brendan. How are you

:20:11. > :20:15.doing? Nervous. That's what it is designed to do. To play with this

:20:15. > :20:21.cocktail of emotions, which are quite natural to feel. Do you fancy

:20:21. > :20:26.giving it a go? Yes! The ride is so new it is not yet open to the

:20:26. > :20:31.public, so my fellow passengers are crash-test dummies, and Helen.

:20:31. > :20:36.Finally after months of waiting, we are about to do the first seven

:20:36. > :20:46.loops. The most in the world in one short burst. I giggle when I'm

:20:46. > :21:00.

:21:00. > :21:07.nervous. Do you? I wee when I'm per hour. The twists the and turn

:21:07. > :21:11.turns are similar to what a jet fighter pilot experiences. After a

:21:11. > :21:16.quick spin, well, several, we are sticking to our seats and rattling

:21:16. > :21:20.around again, all in the interests of science of course. Brendan's

:21:20. > :21:28.hooking us up to a facial recognition system, which analyses

:21:28. > :21:34.our face muscles and reads a range of emotions. You look cool. Thanks.

:21:34. > :21:38.Out of all out of our adventures on Blue Peter, this should confirm

:21:38. > :21:45.which of us is the biggest thrill seeker. Judging by your face,

:21:45. > :21:55.Barney, it is no contest. We'll see. The professor's helmet-cam is

:21:55. > :22:13.

:22:13. > :22:17.recording every grin, groan and Brendan's makeshift lab for the

:22:17. > :22:25.results. How can you tell what we are feeling by filming our faces?

:22:25. > :22:29.Your face is made up of 42 different muscles. Each of those depending on

:22:29. > :22:34.which emotion you are feeling with start twitching. The computer will

:22:34. > :22:40.tell us how happy you are, how nauseous you are, how sick you are

:22:40. > :22:47.feeling, how surprised you are and how sad you are, more to do with

:22:47. > :22:53.anxiety. But also how neutral you are. A lot of the time you'll be

:22:53. > :23:02.doing that. Helen you reckon your most dominant emotion will be what?

:23:02. > :23:08.Happy. I'm neutral. Ignore that, as everyone has neutral emotions. You

:23:08. > :23:13.have loads of happiness here. Little moments of fear, but what you

:23:13. > :23:19.probably don't realise is there's sadness as well, which is a bit of

:23:19. > :23:24.anxiety creeping in as well. But happy seasons the most dominant e--

:23:24. > :23:29.but happiness is the most dominant emotion. All the other emotions of

:23:29. > :23:33.nausea, fear and sadness, very small. For you you were smiling all

:23:33. > :23:39.the way through that ride. Now, Barney, first off lots of

:23:39. > :23:46.anxiety going on here. That nausea is bouncing around. But sadness,

:23:47. > :23:54.36%. Happiness only 5% at this point. I'm feeling sad now. Why?

:23:54. > :23:58.It's only a ride, that you're scared of! That proves it then that the

:23:58. > :24:06.facial recognition test shows categorically that I'm the biggest

:24:06. > :24:15.thrill seeker. No you're not.You're 36% sad, bane I'm not!Science has

:24:15. > :24:20.proved it. No, I'm happy there, and there, see? Science shmience.
