0:03:37 > 0:03:40# Before you came into my life

0:03:40 > 0:03:41# I missed you so bad

0:03:41 > 0:03:44# And you should know that

0:03:44 > 0:03:47# So call me, maybe? #

0:03:48 > 0:03:51Amazing, amazing! Thank you, Carly. I love that song.

0:03:51 > 0:03:53It sounds so good.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56It's one of those songs I've been singing and whistling all summer.

0:03:56 > 0:04:00- Whistling? - We'd like to hear it actually.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02HELEN WHISTLES "CALL ME MAYBE"

0:04:02 > 0:04:06- That's pretty good. - That's a possible extra part? - Better than my singing voice.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09Call Me Maybe is where you've exploded on to the music scene.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12You had a few albums out before but this really kicked off for you, hasn't it?

0:04:12 > 0:04:15Yeah. It's definitely been the song that changed the game for me.

0:04:15 > 0:04:20It was really exciting and I was doing my thing in Canada and Justin Bieber came home for Christmas,

0:04:20 > 0:04:23heard the song being played on the radio, and tweeted about it to all of his fans.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26If you take us back to when you first started to love music,

0:04:26 > 0:04:30what was it about music that made you want to get into it as a career?

0:04:30 > 0:04:32Oh, everything about music.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35I love the words, melodies and stories involved.

0:04:35 > 0:04:39My family was very musical and my dad used to play guitar for me before bed

0:04:39 > 0:04:43and I would fall asleep listening to him sing and trying to sing along before I passed out.

0:04:43 > 0:04:47So, when I was seven, I went on stage for the first time in a local talent show,

0:04:47 > 0:04:49and that's when I knew it was love at first try.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53I wanted to do as many performances as I could from there on out.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56So, what you say to anybody who is a budding musician,

0:04:56 > 0:05:00who thinks, "I'd love to be where she is. I love music. I want to make it my career."

0:05:00 > 0:05:03Oh, I would say, "Try and get your hands on an instrument

0:05:03 > 0:05:05"as early as you can." And never give up.

0:05:05 > 0:05:10You know, you never know which door's going to open for you, so knock on all of them.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13You could be exploding on to the music scene in a couple of years.

0:05:13 > 0:05:17Carly, thank you very much for now. Obviously, if you want to be a pop star, you want to release your track,

0:05:17 > 0:05:20you must get lots of things ready. It's not just about writing a song.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23You've got to have your promoter, a publisher, a song writer as well.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26- There's a lot that goes into it. - A lot of important jobs.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28Perhaps one of the most important is the producer.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30I was lucky enough to go along and meet the man

0:05:30 > 0:05:33who helped kick-start Ed Sheeran's career.

0:05:35 > 0:05:39The English countryside is not the most obvious place

0:05:39 > 0:05:40for a top music studio.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42But in this oasis of creativity,

0:05:42 > 0:05:45is the home of music producer Jake Gosling.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48It's here, at his Sticky Studios,

0:05:48 > 0:05:52that Jake helped turn Ed Sheeran into a Brit Award-winning star.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55And I've come along to find out how - in this idyllic setting -

0:05:55 > 0:05:58Jake creates musical magic.

0:05:58 > 0:06:02In your job, what would you say the key things are?

0:06:02 > 0:06:04When I first met Ed Sheeran, we hadn't met.

0:06:04 > 0:06:06And then, suddenly, we're in a studio and we're like,

0:06:06 > 0:06:10"What should be write a song about?" And you're like a psychiatrist, I guess, a bit.

0:06:10 > 0:06:14"So, tell me what's going on. Have you broken up with anyone or whatever?"

0:06:14 > 0:06:18- Erm...- When there is a break-up, are you a bit like, "Yes!"

0:06:18 > 0:06:20- Yes.- That's great material.

0:06:20 > 0:06:25Do you need to be a musician? Do you need to have an acoustic guitar?

0:06:25 > 0:06:29Er, not necessarily, no. I used to do piano lessons.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32I was never particularly good, to be honest with you.

0:06:32 > 0:06:34But um... I sort of experimented.

0:06:34 > 0:06:38My dad played piano and stuff, so I learned a bit from him.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41So, for our budding Eds at home, where do they start? What should they do?

0:06:41 > 0:06:45I think the first thing to do is to try and really be original.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48I think it's very easy to... We don't want another Ed. We've got Ed.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52We love Ed. It's about having something individual.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55It's nuts to think you could write a song in a day

0:06:55 > 0:06:59and that song could be around for decades and become iconic.

0:06:59 > 0:07:02It's like when I heard Lego House.

0:07:02 > 0:07:06I went to Wembley and saw 16,000 people sing it.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09I was like, "I co-wrote that with Ed" and it was just bizarre.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12# I'm out of touch I'm out of love... #

0:07:12 > 0:07:16The latest act to be produced by Jake is 18-year-old Nina Nesbitt.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19She released her second single, Apple Tree, in April.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21How did Jake put it together?

0:07:21 > 0:07:24This song, Apple Tree, is very emotional.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27It started with just the acoustic guitar here.

0:07:27 > 0:07:31- It was pretty empty so we thought, let's just put some "ahs" in there. - MUSIC PLAYS

0:07:31 > 0:07:33There we go. We've got some "ahs" coming in.

0:07:33 > 0:07:34# Ahh-ahhh...#

0:07:34 > 0:07:37- Is that Nina?- That's Nina doing backing vocals, yeah.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40OK, so that's nice and pretty.

0:07:40 > 0:07:43We thought, let's step it up a bit. Let try some drums.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48So, are they all recorded separately?

0:07:48 > 0:07:50They're all recorded separately bit by bit, yeah.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52When you listen to a song, you don't realise

0:07:52 > 0:07:55there are so many bits involved - so many layers to it, do you?

0:07:55 > 0:07:57I know. A little cymbal here or a guitar there.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00I think that's what makes it interesting.

0:08:00 > 0:08:02Jake, thank you for your advice and expertise.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04Nina sounds great on the computer.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06But I'm delighted to say that the lady herself

0:08:06 > 0:08:10is going to give us an exclusive performance.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18# Where do I start with you?

0:08:18 > 0:08:20# I could say you're a bit way-lead boy

0:08:20 > 0:08:23# Where is my heart with you?

0:08:23 > 0:08:25# I could say I left it on the floor, boy

0:08:25 > 0:08:29# Are you gonna pick it up pick it up? Hey-ey

0:08:29 > 0:08:33# Things kinda got dark with you I drunk your love up too quick boy

0:08:33 > 0:08:35# Where did our love get to?

0:08:35 > 0:08:38# Don't ask me That's something that you destroyed

0:08:38 > 0:08:42# Cos now we're burning up burning up, burning up, hey-ey

0:08:42 > 0:08:44# Flames race like cars in a haze

0:08:44 > 0:08:47# Tears in my eyes But not down my face

0:08:47 > 0:08:51# This was a waste This was a waste, whoa-oh-oh

0:08:51 > 0:08:54# A shame to embrace the love that we faced

0:08:54 > 0:08:56# Hours were days when I was in your grace

0:08:56 > 0:09:01# This was a waste This was a waste. Whoa-oh-oh

0:09:04 > 0:09:08# Well, I'm sorry to be honest but this love is no good, boy

0:09:08 > 0:09:14# And I'm sorry you're drunk on it But it's making me annoyed

0:09:14 > 0:09:16# Heartbroken heartbreaker that's me

0:09:16 > 0:09:18# I accept it, I get the point

0:09:18 > 0:09:24# But stop jumping in to fountains Just to pick up all the coins

0:09:24 > 0:09:26# We were rushed We had no foundations

0:09:26 > 0:09:29# Explanations were never settled first

0:09:29 > 0:09:32# I guess when building something special

0:09:32 > 0:09:34# You should always use ground work

0:09:34 > 0:09:36# We're falling down falling down, hey-ey

0:09:36 > 0:09:41# I could blame you for a lot but I guess it was me that let us drop

0:09:41 > 0:09:46# You go crying to your friends now And I'm left looking not so hot

0:10:33 > 0:10:39# I let you walk all over me Leave your footprints on my heart

0:10:39 > 0:10:44# And it's becoming clear to see It's been like this from the start

0:10:44 > 0:10:50# I let you walk all over me Leave your footprints on my heart

0:10:50 > 0:10:54# And it's becoming clear to see It's been like this from the start

0:11:44 > 0:11:48We're in BBC Maida Vale Studios - the home of the Radio 1 Live Lounge.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50Now all kinds of people have recorded here.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53Our next guest is no stranger to the place either.

0:11:53 > 0:11:55- Tulisa, thank you for joining us. - Thanks for having me.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59Now, this programme is all about giving everybody a guide to making it in the music industry.

0:11:59 > 0:12:03Now, I mean, your year has been so successful, hasn't it?

0:12:03 > 0:12:06Singles, album on the way. Success with N-Dubz.

0:12:06 > 0:12:10Rewind a bit. Did you ever think you would be this much of a success?

0:12:10 > 0:12:12I think when I was really young

0:12:12 > 0:12:17I did believe I was going to be a pop star in my mind.

0:12:17 > 0:12:21There was nothing else I could do. I won't be able to do anything else - this is it.

0:12:21 > 0:12:26And then, when I hit like 15, 16, and I started to see the real world,

0:12:26 > 0:12:30and wake up a bit, I was like, "Hmm, this is a lot tougher than what I thought it would be.

0:12:30 > 0:12:35"I've got just as much chance as everyone else, so I've got to work triple as hard."

0:12:35 > 0:12:38Maybe that was good then. You realised it was tough and it made you keep going?

0:12:38 > 0:12:43Exactly! And kept you grounded as well.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46Everyone, when they're 11 years old, "I'm going to be a pop star!"

0:12:46 > 0:12:49And then you get a bit older and you're like, "This is a tough industry."

0:12:49 > 0:12:52So, for kids out there, who are thinking, "I can do it.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55"I've got the X Factor. I'm going to make it in the music industry."

0:12:55 > 0:12:57What would you advise? What are your top tips?

0:12:57 > 0:13:01For an audition, I would say, the first thing we're going to see

0:13:01 > 0:13:04before you open your mouth, is going to be what you're wearing.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07So, make sure you get your outfit right.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10Something that represents you as a character

0:13:10 > 0:13:12and makes you stand out from the crowd.

0:13:12 > 0:13:15I don't mean come dressed up as a giraffe, I just mean...

0:13:15 > 0:13:17It would get you noticed.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20It would. If that's what you're about, then dress up as a giraffe.

0:13:20 > 0:13:24But, just an outfit that expresses you.

0:13:24 > 0:13:28The second thing will be warm up. So many people come on stage and they haven't warmed up.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31Because they've been in the queue all day, they think,

0:13:31 > 0:13:34"I don't want to do it. There's other people around."

0:13:34 > 0:13:36Warm up, so, when you step on the stage,

0:13:36 > 0:13:38your voice is in tip-top condition.

0:13:38 > 0:13:42And, third tip would obviously be song choice.

0:13:42 > 0:13:47Make sure you pick something that shows off your voice to the best of its ability.

0:13:47 > 0:13:51Something that the public... You think everyone can relate to.

0:13:51 > 0:13:53This is a song that everybody will know.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56Um, and also that is close to the genre of music you want to do.

0:13:56 > 0:14:00Some people might pick a song that they personally love.

0:14:00 > 0:14:02You've got to think about everything.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04You're pitching yourself as a package.

0:14:04 > 0:14:08How do they go about getting the right people to hear their music?

0:14:08 > 0:14:10It's definitely all about the internet.

0:14:10 > 0:14:14I think it's the easiest way to get noticed by the public -

0:14:14 > 0:14:16build a fan base - and by the record labels as well.

0:14:16 > 0:14:20They have people that go on to the internet and search for people

0:14:20 > 0:14:23that have buzzes around them just online. And then, you never know.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26You could have a record label get in contact with you before you contact them.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29Wise words, Tulisa. Thank you very much for your advice.

0:14:29 > 0:14:31Thank you for having me and listening.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34Form one pop star to another, Barney, who's with you?

0:14:34 > 0:14:36- Tinchy, thanks for coming.- Good to see you.

0:14:36 > 0:14:40Can you talk us through what it was like starting as a young musician and getting to where you are now?

0:14:40 > 0:14:42Yeah, definitely. It's never been easy

0:14:42 > 0:14:45from when I started when I was young.

0:14:45 > 0:14:48When I was much younger, it felt like something

0:14:48 > 0:14:50it was just like fun - a hobby.

0:14:50 > 0:14:53There were always things where you feel, is this really possible?

0:14:53 > 0:14:55You have dreams - what you want to achieve. But...

0:14:55 > 0:14:58I needed the right people round me and the right attitude.

0:14:58 > 0:15:02I thought like, you go through so many stages and there's so many things, like trials and...

0:15:02 > 0:15:05I always say, you can never experience how good something is

0:15:05 > 0:15:08if you don't see the bad side of it. That's what I went through.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11You've got to do something wrong before you do it right, that's always the way.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14You learn more from failing than success I've always been told.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17And that's actually a key saying.

0:15:17 > 0:15:19When everything's going right, you don't know what wrong is.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22So, when things don't go as good, you realise or notice, wait,

0:15:22 > 0:15:25I need to change this, and change that to make it that much better.

0:15:25 > 0:15:29Let's imagine for a second, we've got an army of little Tinchy Stryders,

0:15:29 > 0:15:32who want to be like you. They're watching what you do - listening to your music.

0:15:32 > 0:15:33What advice would you give?

0:15:33 > 0:15:36Try and be yourself. That's the key thing.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39Being unique is the easiest thing, the way I look at it.

0:15:39 > 0:15:42Picture this. You look in the mirror and there's only of you.

0:15:42 > 0:15:45- Sure.- Trying to be someone else is harder, so being unique -

0:15:45 > 0:15:48working hard, focussed - never feel like...

0:15:48 > 0:15:52Everyone's entitled to have their opinion but, if you believe in something, stick with your heart.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55You're renowned for being unique and your new single, Help Me,

0:15:55 > 0:15:58is going to show that. So, without further ado, let's hear it.

0:15:58 > 0:16:00- Thank you.- Cheers, mate!

0:16:00 > 0:16:03# God, help me

0:16:03 > 0:16:06# I'm down on my knees, help me

0:19:11 > 0:19:15It's amazing that he manages to get so many words in one breath.

0:19:15 > 0:19:17- I've tried it, it's impossible. - Go on!

0:19:17 > 0:19:20De be do bi da. Just... I can't even say words.

0:19:20 > 0:19:23That's great. It might be a hit.

0:19:23 > 0:19:24Anyway, it's one thing having a great song,

0:19:24 > 0:19:26but to make it a hit you need to make sure

0:19:26 > 0:19:28that a lot of people listen to it.

0:19:28 > 0:19:31Tulisa said that one way to do that is by using the internet.

0:19:31 > 0:19:33Another great way to do that is to go on tour

0:19:33 > 0:19:35and perform your song for thousands of people.

0:19:35 > 0:19:37Recently, that's exactly what happened

0:19:37 > 0:19:38when I met a girl called A*M*E.

0:19:38 > 0:19:41She's an aspiring pop star and got to live out every pop star's dream

0:19:41 > 0:19:43by going on tour with the fabulous JLS.

0:19:43 > 0:19:46Here's what happened when I went along to meet her.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50Welcome to Lincoln.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53Famous for its cathedral, its Lincolnshire sausages,

0:19:53 > 0:19:56and steep hill - voted Britain's greatest street,

0:19:56 > 0:20:01though I don't know who voted for it. I'm exhausted!

0:20:01 > 0:20:04But even better than that is the Lincolnshire Showground.

0:20:04 > 0:20:06Not so much the showground itself, but the fact that tonight

0:20:06 > 0:20:09it's playing host to a huge concert with JLS.

0:20:09 > 0:20:13Also on the bill tonight is a brand new popite

0:20:13 > 0:20:15about to take the music world by storm.

0:20:15 > 0:20:17She's called A*M*E, so let's say hello.

0:20:17 > 0:20:21- A*M*E, hi!- Hello.- How are you? - I'm good. How are you?

0:20:21 > 0:20:22Very well. Nice to meet you.

0:20:22 > 0:20:25- So, you're going to be our tour guide for the day.- I am indeed. Yes.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28- Shall we start backstage? - Let's do it.

0:20:28 > 0:20:3117-year-old A*M*E was discovered last year

0:20:31 > 0:20:34when performing at her high school talent show.

0:20:34 > 0:20:37This led to her signing to Gary Barlow's record label.

0:20:37 > 0:20:39Since then, A*M*E's been getting her music heard

0:20:39 > 0:20:42by supporting the likes of Jessie J, The Wanted,

0:20:42 > 0:20:45and now touring with JLS.

0:20:45 > 0:20:50She's about to release her first commercial single, Play The Game Boy.

0:20:53 > 0:20:57- First things first - make-up.- OK. Do you think I need some?

0:20:57 > 0:20:59I think you might need a little powdering.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02- This is my lovely make-up artist, Heather.- Nice to meet you.

0:21:02 > 0:21:04Can we start from the beginning? When did it all start?

0:21:04 > 0:21:07Probably when I was round about eight.

0:21:07 > 0:21:11The transition from Sierra Leone to here. I was born in Sierra Leone.

0:21:11 > 0:21:14Just discovering more music and like discovering different genres

0:21:14 > 0:21:18and things that I didn't know existed kind of like musically.

0:21:18 > 0:21:21How important are influences to you? People that you look up to.

0:21:21 > 0:21:23I'm really a massive 90s pop head.

0:21:23 > 0:21:27I look up to all the greats - people like Beyonce and Mariah Carey.

0:21:27 > 0:21:30With someone like Jessie J as well - being able to tour with her

0:21:30 > 0:21:32was the greatest thing ever because she is pop right now.

0:21:32 > 0:21:35If someone's watching now, who wants to be a pop star,

0:21:35 > 0:21:37what would you say to them?

0:21:37 > 0:21:41I would say get into clubs definitely. Stuff like choir.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43Choir was what made me where I am today.

0:21:43 > 0:21:47I would say after school clubs - like singing lessons or dancing.

0:21:47 > 0:21:50Every opportunity you get, just dive at it. That's what I think.

0:21:50 > 0:21:53How about taking your hairbrush and singing in front of the mirror?

0:21:53 > 0:21:57- I still do that.- That's 100% the best way to become a pop artist.

0:21:57 > 0:22:00As the crowd begin to arrive,

0:22:00 > 0:22:02it's time for A*M*E to pick her costume.

0:22:02 > 0:22:06- We need something bright that will pop out on stage.- Yeah.

0:22:06 > 0:22:09Most of my outfits are really bright and they go with my lips.

0:22:09 > 0:22:11This is a nice little pink number.

0:22:11 > 0:22:13It's like a little blazer

0:22:13 > 0:22:15but like cut-off sleeves and it's got spikes.

0:22:15 > 0:22:17Everyone needs a bit of spikes on stage.

0:22:17 > 0:22:19I'll leave you to get changed.

0:22:19 > 0:22:24- Thank you.- I'll see you on your way to the stage.- See you then.- OK.

0:22:24 > 0:22:26With a packed crowd waiting,

0:22:26 > 0:22:28there's just a quick chance to ask the boys from JLS

0:22:28 > 0:22:31if they have any tips on how to command such a large audience.

0:22:31 > 0:22:35When you're out there and you see thousands of people, it's showtime.

0:22:35 > 0:22:36Do you know what I mean?

0:22:36 > 0:22:39All you can do is go out there, have fun and enjoy it.

0:22:39 > 0:22:41The more you enjoy it, the more the audience will.

0:22:41 > 0:22:47For us, we like to get totally mad and physical on stage.

0:22:47 > 0:22:50We're jumping about, singing and dancing at the same time.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53It involves for us a lot of outside training

0:22:53 > 0:22:55as much as anything else.

0:22:55 > 0:22:58No matter how good you get, you still get pre-show nerves, surely?

0:22:58 > 0:23:01It's always a good thing to get nervous.

0:23:01 > 0:23:03I don't think you should stop getting nervous.

0:23:03 > 0:23:06As soon as you go out there, and you feed off the crowd,

0:23:06 > 0:23:08and you're halfway through your first song,

0:23:08 > 0:23:09usually your nerves have gone

0:23:09 > 0:23:12and that makes you put on a better performance.

0:23:12 > 0:23:15I'm keeping you obviously from getting ready for your big gig.

0:23:15 > 0:23:19- You'd better get on there and get that crowd warmed up.- Yes! Showtime.

0:23:19 > 0:23:21- Thank you, boys. - Have a good one.- See you later.

0:23:21 > 0:23:26With what feels like half of Lincoln out there,

0:23:26 > 0:23:28it's time for 17-year-old Amy to dominate the stage

0:23:28 > 0:23:31and become A*M*E - the popstar.

0:23:31 > 0:23:32They sound ready.

0:23:32 > 0:23:35Come on. Let's make some noise - come on!

0:23:36 > 0:23:38Go wild for A*M*E.

0:23:38 > 0:23:40- Good luck!- Thank you.

0:23:40 > 0:23:42- Let's do this.- It's all yours.

0:23:43 > 0:23:46I'm nervous and I'm just watching.

0:23:47 > 0:23:50A*M*E.

0:23:54 > 0:23:59# You can't stop me now Or hold me down... #

0:23:59 > 0:24:04So amazing to see somebody who's so quiet back stage go on there

0:24:04 > 0:24:06and just command that stage.

0:24:06 > 0:24:08So confident for somebody so young.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11If you're there sat thinking you want to be a popstar,

0:24:11 > 0:24:13there's proof that you can do it.

0:24:15 > 0:24:19All I'm going to say is watch this space. She was amazing.

0:24:19 > 0:24:21You absolutely loved it. He said, "She ripped it up!"

0:24:21 > 0:24:23Stop it! I'm trying to be cool and it's not working.

0:24:23 > 0:24:26You can pull that sentence off, I'm sure you can.

0:24:26 > 0:24:28Right, we are in the Radio One Live Lounge,

0:24:33 > 0:24:35but it can be hard work. Is that fair?
