0:02:34 > 0:02:37Our winner Elinor designed Hero the Hedgehog
0:02:37 > 0:02:39for the IAAF World Championships
0:02:39 > 0:02:41and Whizbee for the

0:10:54 > 0:10:58This is it. I am waiting for the ball to be snapped.

0:11:02 > 0:11:06Sorry, guys, I am not actually explaining what's going on.
0:11:06 > 0:11:09Let's take it back to the start. This is American football.
0:11:11 > 0:11:13Bright, brash and bold.
0:11:13 > 0:11:17American football is a modern sporting spectacle.
0:11:17 > 0:11:21Huge in America, it is thought more than 150 million people
0:11:21 > 0:11:25around the world watched last year's league final, the Super Bowl.
0:11:26 > 0:11:30So I want to find out why so many people love it and who better
0:11:30 > 0:11:36to tell me than former pros Osi and Jason from the BBC's NFL show.
0:11:40 > 0:11:43So, guys, talk to me. Why is football so great?
0:11:43 > 0:11:45Why should we all love it?
0:11:45 > 0:11:48It is a beautiful event. It is for everyone.
0:11:48 > 0:11:49It is a sport anybody can play.
0:11:49 > 0:11:52Whether you are tall, short, big, small, skinny,
0:11:52 > 0:11:55there is a position for you out there on that field.
0:11:55 > 0:11:56NFL is getting big out here.
0:11:56 > 0:11:59American football is getting big out here
0:11:59 > 0:12:00and we are urging people to play.
0:12:00 > 0:12:02I feel tiny stood next to you both,
0:12:02 > 0:12:05but that is not an excuse, right? I can still play football.
0:12:05 > 0:12:06Absolutely. You are good to go.
0:12:06 > 0:12:09That's lucky because top amateur women's team
0:12:09 > 0:12:10the Leeds Carnegie Chargers
0:12:10 > 0:12:14are letting me join their ranks for the day.
0:12:14 > 0:12:16Right, team, bring it in, let's take a knee.
0:12:18 > 0:12:21First things first, I think we need to know the rules of the game.
0:12:21 > 0:12:23Take it away, Coach Connor.
0:12:23 > 0:12:26An American football pitch is 100 yards long.
0:12:26 > 0:12:29The aim of the game is to take the ball to the opposite endzone
0:12:29 > 0:12:31in order to score a touchdown.
0:12:31 > 0:12:34Each team has 11 players on the field known as the offense
0:12:34 > 0:12:35and defense.
0:12:35 > 0:12:37The offense can move down the field by running the ball
0:12:37 > 0:12:39or throwing the ball.
0:12:39 > 0:12:43It is the defense's job to stop the other team moving down the field.
0:12:43 > 0:12:45And they stop them by tackling.
0:12:45 > 0:12:49Which I am totally not ready for, but there is a gentler version
0:12:49 > 0:12:51I can play first.
0:12:51 > 0:12:55This is flag football. No tackling here.
0:12:55 > 0:12:59By simply grabbing a player's flag, you stop them and for
0:12:59 > 0:13:02youth teams like Carnegie's, it is a great way to first play the sport.
0:13:04 > 0:13:05Down there.
0:13:07 > 0:13:12- It is different to other sports and it is fun.- It keeps me healthy.
0:13:12 > 0:13:14It is about teamwork.
0:13:16 > 0:13:17This is great fun.
0:13:19 > 0:13:22But if I am going to get a real taste of American football,
0:13:22 > 0:13:25I probably need to play with some guys my own size.
0:13:25 > 0:13:28Although they are quite a lot bigger than me.
0:13:29 > 0:13:32- Coach, I've got my kit, I'm ready to go.- Cool.
0:13:32 > 0:13:34I just need to know first of all, what kind of things are you
0:13:34 > 0:13:37good at? What things are you bringing to the team?
0:13:37 > 0:13:41I am small, nifty, fairly agile.
0:13:41 > 0:13:45- Fast?- Yeah. I can run quite fast.
0:13:46 > 0:13:49Well, not quite as fast as this guy.
0:13:49 > 0:13:50But carrying the ball
0:13:50 > 0:13:55while running is tricky, so Gaby here shows me how to hold it.
0:13:55 > 0:13:59Cover it, fingers either side of the nose of the ball, tuck it in.
0:13:59 > 0:14:02- Make sure your fingers go over again.- Oh, I see.
0:14:02 > 0:14:06- Nice and tight, no-one is getting it.- No.
0:14:06 > 0:14:09'The key is not to drop the ball when tackled
0:14:09 > 0:14:12'so my grip needs to be tight.'
0:14:12 > 0:14:13This is so intense!
0:14:16 > 0:14:20I think the last one made me let go.
0:14:20 > 0:14:24'Next, how to receive the ball from another player.'
0:14:24 > 0:14:26You want your hands open like a gate.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38I've had three tackles, I think I'm ready to play.
0:15:41 > 0:15:44'Now I need to put all my new skills into practice.
0:15:44 > 0:15:47'I've been set a classic American football challenge.
0:15:47 > 0:15:49'I will have three attempts to receive
0:15:49 > 0:15:50'the ball at the back of the field
0:15:50 > 0:15:53'and keeping hold of it, beat the defense down the right
0:15:53 > 0:15:57'then run the length of the field and score a touchdown.'
0:15:57 > 0:15:58Easy.
0:16:00 > 0:16:01Set, go!
0:16:03 > 0:16:06'Oh, maybe not that easy. I dropped it.
0:16:06 > 0:16:10'I totally took my eyes off the ball. Take two.
0:16:10 > 0:16:16'Catch the ball, beat the defender...
0:16:16 > 0:16:18'Oh! Where did she come from?

0:16:34 > 0:16:37'spot an opening, she's out the way,
0:16:37 > 0:16:39'I'm going for it now.
0:16:39 > 0:16:42'I'm still going. Touchdown!
0:16:46 > 0:16:49'I'll be honest, I think they were going little bit easy on me,
0:16:49 > 0:16:52'but I've had a great day.
0:16:52 > 0:16:53'American football, give it a go.'
0:16:56 > 0:16:59- Did you see that slow-mo tackle, Radz?- Ouch, Linds.
0:16:59 > 0:17:00I can still feel that now.
0:17:00 > 0:17:03What a sport that is, as is athletics, because let me
0:17:03 > 0:17:05draw your attention to the track behind me here.
0:17:05 > 0:17:08This is the warm-up track which is vital because it's where all the
0:17:08 > 0:17:12Para athletes get themselves ready to compete in that stadium there.
0:17:12 > 0:17:16This feels like proper Blue Peter access all areas, doesn't it?
0:17:16 > 0:17:18Because these are some of the best sports people
0:17:18 > 0:17:20in the world, it is so inspiring.
0:17:20 > 0:17:23And speaking of inspiring, we've been trying to get you to

0:17:31 > 0:17:34So why not complete the set with this little guy?
0:17:34 > 0:17:37Also, remember, you've only got one month in which to achieve it,
0:17:37 > 0:17:40but like with all the Sport Badges, you get the chance to become
0:17:40 > 0:17:43a judge on Young Sports Personality Of The Year 2017.
0:17:43 > 0:17:45- Radz, can I apply?- No.
0:17:45 > 0:17:47I want to rub shoulders with some awesome athletes, which is
0:17:47 > 0:17:50- what you can do.- You already are, Linds.- That is true.
0:17:50 > 0:17:53Now onto some of your incredible post, check this out.
0:17:55 > 0:17:58Look at this picture of me looking into a jellyfish tank,
0:17:58 > 0:18:00sent in by Darcie from Somerset.
0:18:00 > 0:18:03I can hardly work out if that is a photo or a drawing of me.
0:18:03 > 0:18:05Great work, Darcie.
0:18:05 > 0:18:07Now this picture of Barney is him
0:18:07 > 0:18:10getting absolutely drenched in his bike challenge
0:18:10 > 0:18:12sent in by Sophie from Durham.
0:18:12 > 0:18:14Sophie, that is a high five from me.
0:18:16 > 0:18:19I love rock climbing and, Eva, we are kindred spirits,
0:18:19 > 0:18:23this is of you climbing in the Lake District with your dad.
0:18:23 > 0:18:27What fitness, what fun and that gets you a BP badge. Well done, Eva.
0:18:29 > 0:18:33Izzy from Harrow, this must have taken you ages.
0:18:33 > 0:18:36What a model of Shelley that is.
0:18:36 > 0:18:40The attention, the detail, the time, it is awesome.
0:18:40 > 0:18:43But, by the way, it's not the Shelley from Spot Shelley.
0:18:43 > 0:18:45That is a little hint.
0:18:45 > 0:18:48Who remembers when we had medieval knights on the show a few
0:18:48 > 0:18:50weeks back?
0:18:50 > 0:18:52Ruby from Gloucester, you certainly do
0:18:52 > 0:18:54and you've recreated it perfectly.
0:18:54 > 0:18:57Your artwork is not only accurate, it moves forward,
0:18:57 > 0:18:59it moves backwards and I love it.
0:18:59 > 0:19:04A big well done to Darcie, Sophie, Eva, Izzy and Ruby.
0:19:04 > 0:19:07You have all earned yourself badges to add to your big badge boat.
0:19:08 > 0:19:11I am constantly amazed at how creative you guys are.
0:19:11 > 0:19:13But please do keep sending in your post
0:19:13 > 0:19:16because you never know what might get used in our summer shows.
0:19:16 > 0:19:17Also, we love receiving it.
0:19:17 > 0:19:19It is so cool, just like being right here
0:19:19 > 0:19:21at the World Para Athletics Championships.
0:19:21 > 0:19:23The place where Ellie, our competition winner,
0:19:23 > 0:19:26got a masterclass by none other than Jonnie Peacock.
0:19:26 > 0:19:29And he is not the only legend here, there are so many.
0:19:29 > 0:19:31We are surrounded by them - Kadeena Cox, Hannah Cockcroft.
0:19:31 > 0:19:34Richard Whitehead. Don't forget about him.
0:19:34 > 0:19:37Also, one name we haven't mentioned is Barney Harwood.
0:19:37 > 0:19:38He hasn't been here this week.
0:19:38 > 0:19:43- Sad face. But he'll be back next week.- He's doing a happy dance.
0:19:43 > 0:19:45Careful there, Radzi, we are on a ledge.
0:19:45 > 0:19:47If you need a bit of Barney Harwood in your life,
0:19:47 > 0:19:51look no further than this wonderful VT. Stop it.
0:19:52 > 0:19:55Chances are, you have probably seen one of these before. It's a scooter.
0:19:55 > 0:19:56Loads of fun, aren't they?
0:19:56 > 0:19:59You can ride to your friend's house, you can ride around town
0:19:59 > 0:20:02and when you get really confident on them, you can go quite fast.
0:20:02 > 0:20:06Then there are other people who take it one step further.
0:20:08 > 0:20:09Well, quite a lot further.
0:20:11 > 0:20:15Freestyle scooter is taking life on two wheels to the next level.
0:20:15 > 0:20:19Using speed and skill to perform some frankly unbelievable stunts.
0:20:19 > 0:20:23And right now, the guy who has performed the world's best trick
0:20:23 > 0:20:25just happens to live in Liverpool.
0:20:27 > 0:20:31I've come to see if I can track him down in his natural environment...
0:20:31 > 0:20:32the skate park.
0:20:35 > 0:20:37Jamie Hall can do things on a scooter most of us
0:20:37 > 0:20:39can only dream of.
0:20:39 > 0:20:42By the age of 15, he is already one of the best in the UK.
0:20:42 > 0:20:45So will he be able to pass on some of those skills to me?
0:20:47 > 0:20:51Jamie, let's talk about how you got to where you are now.
0:20:51 > 0:20:54I've been riding for about five or six years now.
0:20:54 > 0:20:57I just won the World's Best Trick in Barcelona.
0:20:57 > 0:20:59Such a big achievement.
0:20:59 > 0:21:02I did a double backflip, double tailwhip. Landed it second go.
0:21:02 > 0:21:04Double tailwhip, what is that?
0:21:04 > 0:21:07So I did two backflips with that in it.
0:21:07 > 0:21:09I have immediately noticed the massive difference
0:21:09 > 0:21:11between your scooter and mine.
0:21:11 > 0:21:15These scooters are really good going to school and just going outside,
0:21:15 > 0:21:19but for freestyle in the skate park, these are really, really strong.
0:21:19 > 0:21:20They are made out of steel.
0:21:20 > 0:21:22I really want to give this a go,
0:21:22 > 0:21:24but I feel like I need more safety gear on.
0:21:24 > 0:21:27Yeah, what I wear is a helmet, a certified helmet,
0:21:27 > 0:21:30some bum pads, shin pads so the scooter doesn't hit me
0:21:30 > 0:21:34in the shins, and I have ankle pads as well so it doesn't do the same.
0:21:34 > 0:21:37How about if we just cover me in pillows and just tape them round?
0:21:37 > 0:21:38That would be great.
0:21:38 > 0:21:42OK, so safety gear in place. Do you reckon I can do something today?
0:21:42 > 0:21:45- You can. I am feeling confident. - I'm glad you are.
0:21:45 > 0:21:46Let's do it.
0:21:48 > 0:21:51'So with all the correct gear on, Jamie is going to show me how to get
0:21:51 > 0:21:53'the most out of my scooter
0:21:53 > 0:21:56'and we begin with how to set off on a ramp or "dropping in".
0:21:56 > 0:21:59'Which I'm told is harder than it looks.'
0:21:59 > 0:22:03Make sure your feet are either side so is locked and your most
0:22:03 > 0:22:07comfortable foot, put it on the deck and whilst it's on,
0:22:07 > 0:22:09you can put the other one to the side
0:22:09 > 0:22:11and just drop in like this slowly.
0:22:11 > 0:22:13- Then put it back on. - Simple as that.
0:22:17 > 0:22:20'I can confirm it is harder than it looks.
0:22:23 > 0:22:25'But, slowly, I get the hang of it
0:22:25 > 0:22:29'so Jamie thinks I could try a bigger ramp.
0:22:29 > 0:22:30'What could possibly go wrong?'
0:22:35 > 0:22:37Like that?
0:22:37 > 0:22:39'So that's why you need the safety gear.
0:22:39 > 0:22:41'I'm fine and Jamie shows me where I'm going wrong.'
0:22:41 > 0:22:45Just make sure your knees act like a suspension when you drop in
0:22:45 > 0:22:48and that they go down and then when you're, like, in the middle,
0:22:48 > 0:22:51stand up again so you've got your balance.
0:22:51 > 0:22:53OK. So knees are suspension, keep lower down.
0:22:53 > 0:22:55When do we start doing backflips?
0:22:55 > 0:22:56'Yeah, maybe not.'
0:22:56 > 0:22:59I'm going to see how high you can jump out of this ramp.
0:22:59 > 0:23:02- All right. Do you want to show me and I'll copy?- Yes.
0:23:09 > 0:23:11That was it. Just try and keep your feet on.
0:23:11 > 0:23:13Feet on.
0:23:13 > 0:23:17That was better. I want you to try and jump off the side there.
0:23:17 > 0:23:19- I will show you first. - Just like that.
0:23:22 > 0:23:23So when you did it,
0:23:23 > 0:23:25you went too fast and you were quite uncontrolled.
0:23:25 > 0:23:28I was. I was definitely uncontrolled.
0:23:28 > 0:23:31If you start here, you go slow and you're more controlled,
0:23:31 > 0:23:33just make sure you jump when you get to the line.
0:23:35 > 0:23:38That was it!
0:23:38 > 0:23:40'Yes, that is me jumping off ramp and loving it.
0:23:42 > 0:23:45'But if I'm going to take on any really big jumps,
0:23:45 > 0:23:48'I need to get used to the foam pit.'
0:23:48 > 0:23:50- That is a long way down. - Yes, it is quite far.
0:23:50 > 0:23:53- What is it like to jump in to? - It is really fun.
0:23:53 > 0:23:56'This pit allows riders to safely practice more advanced tricks
0:23:56 > 0:23:58'so Jamie wants me
0:23:58 > 0:24:01'to get used to feeling the full force of the foam on my face.'
0:24:01 > 0:24:02Here we go.
0:24:07 > 0:24:08How was that Jamie?
0:24:08 > 0:24:10It was really good, just a bit more practice
0:24:10 > 0:24:12and then you'll be able to get it better.
0:24:12 > 0:24:15- Maybe now is a good time for you to show us what you can do.- Will do.
0:24:15 > 0:24:18I'm going to stay here for a sec.
0:24:18 > 0:24:20'What I didn't mention before is
0:24:20 > 0:24:22'that Jamie isn't just here to help me.
0:24:22 > 0:24:24'Oh, no. He is here to train.
0:24:24 > 0:24:28'Because tomorrow, right here, it's the European Championships
0:24:28 > 0:24:31'and he is competing. No biggie, then.'
0:24:31 > 0:24:34Mate, I really don't know what to say,
0:24:34 > 0:24:35you're more than ready, aren't you?
0:24:35 > 0:24:37Yeah, I've been practising my run and I've got it dialled.
0:24:37 > 0:24:39I hope tomorrow goes really well for you.
0:24:39 > 0:24:43- I'm going to come and cheer you on if that's OK?- Yeah, that's fine.
0:24:43 > 0:24:45It's the next morning, it's competition day as you can see,
0:24:45 > 0:24:47athletes have turned up from all over the world
0:24:47 > 0:24:50and they're excited to be here, aren't they?
0:24:50 > 0:24:54And what they are about to do is awesome and it all happens in here.
0:24:54 > 0:24:57There are two competitions today - the amateurs and the pros.
0:24:57 > 0:25:01Jamie hasn't arrived yet, he's a pro, but the amateur competitors
0:25:01 > 0:25:04are warming up and getting ready to show us what they are made of.
0:25:07 > 0:25:09OK, so here we go, the judges are in position, the competition
0:25:09 > 0:25:11is about two minutes away from starting,
0:25:11 > 0:25:13the spectators are here,
0:25:13 > 0:25:15they can't wait to see what's going on and neither can I.
0:25:15 > 0:25:19It is one of most exciting things I've been to for a long, long time.
0:25:19 > 0:25:22I'm going to shut up, we're going to watch the action. Here we go.
0:25:27 > 0:25:30So, the guys that we are watching at the moment are doing tailwhips,
0:25:30 > 0:25:33backflips, they're upside down half the time.
0:25:33 > 0:25:35These are the amateurs.
0:25:35 > 0:25:37What is it going to be like that this afternoon
0:25:37 > 0:25:39when Jamie shows us what he can do? I cannot wait.
0:25:39 > 0:25:43It really is mind-blowing what these guys can do with a scooter
0:25:43 > 0:25:46and it just gets better and better.
0:25:46 > 0:25:50Then the pros arrive and Jamie sets foot on top of the ramp to
0:25:50 > 0:25:53begin his first run and he starts with this...
0:25:57 > 0:25:58Yeah!
0:26:12 > 0:26:15And that's how you start a pro competition. Absolutely flawless.
0:26:15 > 0:26:18Every single move executed with perfection.
0:26:19 > 0:26:22With Jamie's second run, he goes even bigger and who can blame him?
0:26:22 > 0:26:28Finish in the top five and he earns a place at the World Championships.
0:26:28 > 0:26:31So, as the judges make up their mind, you can
0:26:31 > 0:26:32really feel the tension.
0:26:35 > 0:26:37Brilliantly, he finishes fifth,
0:26:37 > 0:26:40so he is going to the World Championships.
0:26:40 > 0:26:43A great finish to a great day.
0:26:43 > 0:26:45I have been nothing short of inspired
0:26:45 > 0:26:48and I been working on my latest trick. Do you want to see it?
0:26:48 > 0:26:49Here we go.
0:26:54 > 0:26:56See. There you go.
0:26:56 > 0:26:59It's amazing what a bit of inspiration will do, isn't it?
0:26:59 > 0:27:01- Was that good, Barney? - Get down, Jamie.
0:27:03 > 0:27:07OK, fine, Jamie did the jump. But I was inspired. Thanks for that.
0:27:08 > 0:27:10Jamie, what a man.
0:27:10 > 0:27:13I thought Barney gave it everything as well. Not bad.
0:27:13 > 0:27:15That is nearly it for today's show.
0:27:15 > 0:27:18If you were watching, did you manage to spot Shelley?
0:27:18 > 0:27:20- She was, of course, hiding... - In the stadium.
0:27:20 > 0:27:22That's where she was.
0:27:22 > 0:27:24If you spotted Shelley, head to the website...
0:27:24 > 0:27:28to see who the winner was.
0:27:28 > 0:27:30That's all we've got time for this week, but make sure
0:27:30 > 0:27:33you are watching next week because it's all about the silver badge.
0:27:33 > 0:27:35We've got robots, we've got trains,
0:27:35 > 0:27:37- we've got swimming with sharks. - What?
0:27:37 > 0:27:40But, for now, it is of course all about this little thing.
0:27:40 > 0:27:43If you want to earn your very own Sport Badge, head to the Blue Peter
0:27:43 > 0:27:47website, download the form and you could earn your very own...

0:27:55 > 0:27:57- I love that mascot.- Bye.
