0:00:20 > 0:00:23It's Sport Relief this weekend, but you already know that.

0:00:23 > 0:00:26Over the last few weeks on Blue Peter,

0:00:26 > 0:00:29we've been doing our best to inspire you to get involved.

0:00:29 > 0:00:33And these are the very best bits for Sport Relief 24 and Team Blue Peter.

0:00:35 > 0:00:38This year for Sport Relief, you can run...

0:00:38 > 0:00:40Like me, you can swim...

0:00:41 > 0:00:43..or, like our challenge, cycle.

0:00:44 > 0:00:48But this isn't going to be just any old cycle challenge.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51Oh, yeah, I want one.

0:00:51 > 0:00:55'But the details of our challenge are a little bit sketchy.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57'We've just been told we got to report this warehouse

0:00:57 > 0:00:59'in Manchester to find out more.'

0:00:59 > 0:01:01"For the Sport Relief cycle challenge,

0:01:01 > 0:01:03"you'll be racing each other.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06"The bad news is, you will have two design and build your own rides.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09"Your pedal-powered vehicles should be impressive on the road,

0:01:09 > 0:01:11"attract lots of attention and be fun.

0:01:11 > 0:01:13"Get thinking quickly, because in 30 minutes you got to

0:01:13 > 0:01:16"pitch your designs to a panel of experts."

0:01:17 > 0:01:18Go to it!

0:01:22 > 0:01:26'Our designs had better be good, because in just two weeks' time

0:01:26 > 0:01:29'we'll be lining up on the start line of this cycle track

0:01:29 > 0:01:32'in Preston, getting ready to race our creations.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35'What could possibly go wrong?'

0:01:35 > 0:01:37I'm going to go lightweight, I'm going to go quite high,

0:01:37 > 0:01:40cos I don't want to be too low - it's difficult to steer if you're too low,

0:01:40 > 0:01:41and I'm going to go for speed.

0:01:41 > 0:01:45I just tried to write down everything Barney keeps saying.

0:01:45 > 0:01:46I'm just thinking.

0:01:47 > 0:01:51'Judging our designs are a panel of top cycling experts.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55'Graeme Obree, nicknamed the Flying Scotsman...

0:01:55 > 0:01:57'British cycling Go-Ride coach Kim Meadows...

0:01:57 > 0:02:00'And Neil Carter is from the British Human Power Club.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02'Let's show them what we've got.'

0:02:04 > 0:02:08Hi. That's the Shadow GT7 you're looking at.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10Seven cos seven is my lucky number.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12This is the Radicator.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14It's called the Linds-mobile.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17I'm thinking gold, like the metal I'll be getting.

0:02:17 > 0:02:22I've gone for a single frame that goes over both wheels

0:02:22 > 0:02:24and also houses the pedal unit at the end.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26What would you make it out of?

0:02:26 > 0:02:29I couldn't be sure, Kim, I've never made a bike,

0:02:29 > 0:02:31I've barely ridden on one.

0:02:31 > 0:02:35It's a smaller wheel at the front, large wheel at the back with

0:02:35 > 0:02:39the flames and that's me going really, really fast.

0:02:39 > 0:02:44And if it can have a nice cushion on it, that will be great.

0:02:44 > 0:02:45'What do the judges really think?'

0:02:45 > 0:02:48Do we have a racer on our hands?

0:02:49 > 0:02:51That could be really fast.

0:02:52 > 0:02:56'Fast, yes, I like fast. What do they reckon to yours, Linds?'

0:02:56 > 0:02:58I would definitely not have back-wheel steering

0:02:58 > 0:03:00because it's very difficult to make it work.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02And do what you think about the seat?

0:03:02 > 0:03:05I think I might be inclined just to lay it down a little bit more.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08But that doesn't mean it has to lose personality.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10'Hardly glowing praise.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12'What did they make of your design, Radzi?'

0:03:12 > 0:03:15Looking where your pedal is and your back wheel,

0:03:15 > 0:03:18the chain's going to go straight through your body.

0:03:18 > 0:03:19That's a big problem.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22And where are your brakes, front wheels, back wheel?

0:03:22 > 0:03:24I hadn't thought about the brakes.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27'So there's still work to be done but the panel are passionate

0:03:27 > 0:03:31'about pedal power and agree to help refine our designs.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37'A week later and at the cycle track at Preston, it's race day,

0:03:37 > 0:03:39'but how have the bikes turned out?

0:03:40 > 0:03:42'This is the Linds-mobile.'

0:03:42 > 0:03:45check this out, it's got it all.

0:03:45 > 0:03:49It's bright pink, of course. Look at this, it's got flowers on it.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52- I've got a little bell down here. - BELL DINGS

0:03:52 > 0:03:54Maximum comfort, a spotty cushion.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59'Not so easy to get going, though.

0:03:59 > 0:04:01'Oh, yeah, I think I've got this one in the bag.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05'Ah, but you've not seen mine, Lindsey.'

0:04:05 > 0:04:08Let me introduce you to the Shadow GT7.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17This bike is fast, because unlike Radzi and Lindsey,

0:04:17 > 0:04:19there are no gimmicks on this bike.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22It's built with the three S's in mind, it's Simple,

0:04:22 > 0:04:24it's Streamlined and it's got Speed.

0:04:24 > 0:04:29'Yes, the Shadow GT7 might not be that stable, but it is speedy,

0:04:29 > 0:04:33'so assuming I can stay on it, I'm going to win this race.

0:04:34 > 0:04:35'Easy now, Barney.'

0:04:35 > 0:04:37Yeah, it's the Radicator.

0:04:39 > 0:04:43'My mean machine looks the part, but even on race day,

0:04:43 > 0:04:45'it's still a work-in-progress.'

0:04:45 > 0:04:49I didn't think about the wheels and the gearing and the chain,

0:04:49 > 0:04:53which falls off all the time. I can't really turn the pedals.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56It's complicated, but it's gold.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01'Barney's bike is very wobbly.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03'Lindsey's pink thing's, well, a slow-mobile,

0:05:03 > 0:05:06'so if the Radicator doesn't fall to pieces on the way around,

0:05:06 > 0:05:08'I think I'm in with half a chance.

0:05:08 > 0:05:13'There's only one way we're going to settle this, and that's on the track.

0:05:13 > 0:05:17'Over to our pit-lane pundit and friend of CBBC, Ore.

0:05:17 > 0:05:23Three, two, one, go, go, go!

0:05:23 > 0:05:26'A surprise early lead for the Linds-mobile.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28'And a very unsteady start for me.

0:05:29 > 0:05:33'But when the Shadow GT7 gets going, it's rapid.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38He's blown away the rest of the field. So casual.

0:05:38 > 0:05:43'I might be leading but I can't shake of the wobbles.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46'We might be fighting out for second place here, Linds.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48'I'm so far ahead in this race.'

0:05:48 > 0:05:49Hang on.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52It looks like we could have a winner.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55'But it's me, I snuck through in the lead.'

0:05:55 > 0:05:56He's stopped.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59I can't believe it, Radzi's stopped with seven metres to go.

0:05:59 > 0:06:03'No, no, no, my chain's come off.'

0:06:03 > 0:06:08Lindsey Russell is the Sport Relief winner!

0:06:08 > 0:06:13'I've crossed the finish line but I can't leave my race buddy behind.'

0:06:13 > 0:06:14You're so heavy!

0:06:17 > 0:06:21You would not believe the drama that's going on here.

0:06:21 > 0:06:26Barney's gaining but Radz is going to cross the line! Whoo-hoo!

0:06:26 > 0:06:29'It's a photo finish, and I've taken it by a wheel length,

0:06:29 > 0:06:33'but there's something not quite right about all this. Yeah.'

0:06:33 > 0:06:36I saw them do the shortcut dirty on me.

0:06:36 > 0:06:37'Yeah, don't think I didn't spot it.'

0:06:37 > 0:06:41- Take the shortcut, down here, do you want me to show you?- Yeah.

0:06:41 > 0:06:43'Well, come on. How else were we going to catch you?'

0:06:43 > 0:06:46Well, guys, there can only be one winner.

0:06:46 > 0:06:48For completing the entire three miles,

0:06:48 > 0:06:53today's gold medal winner is Barney Harwood!

0:06:53 > 0:06:55Whoo!

0:06:55 > 0:06:56Yeah!

0:07:00 > 0:07:03Here on Blue Peter, we love a bit of healthy competition.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06But sometimes the most testing Sport Relief challenges

0:07:06 > 0:07:07are a solo mission.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10And this year it was my turn to take the plunge and go it alone.

0:07:13 > 0:07:17'I've been given a huge challenge for Sport Relief.

0:07:17 > 0:07:21'That challenge - to complete a one mile open-water swim

0:07:21 > 0:07:22'in the Lake District.'

0:07:22 > 0:07:24Are you being serious?

0:07:24 > 0:07:26'Today that challenge begins,

0:07:26 > 0:07:30'as I get my first experience of open water.

0:07:30 > 0:07:32'Please don't try this at home.

0:07:32 > 0:07:36'Open water swimming is extremely dangerous. I'm going to be

0:07:36 > 0:07:39'trained and monitored at all times by an expert.'

0:07:39 > 0:07:42- Colin, pleasure to meet you. - You too. My name's Colin Hill.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45I've swum the English Channel, the Gibraltar Straits,

0:07:45 > 0:07:47the Hellespont, which is from Asia to Europe.

0:07:47 > 0:07:51I've swum from Italy to Sicily. Swimming, for me, is everything.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54It's tough when you first start. There's no way round it.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57I'm going to get in there. I'm definitely going to get in there.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00You're going in there.

0:08:00 > 0:08:02'Radz has got a big challenge in ahead of him.'

0:08:02 > 0:08:05He's going to try and complete a long-distance swim

0:08:05 > 0:08:06in Windermere in February.

0:08:06 > 0:08:08This is what you call extreme winter swimming.

0:08:08 > 0:08:12For him to get prepared for that, he's got a lot of work ahead of him.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15Into the water.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17You can't be serious.

0:08:18 > 0:08:24- You've nearly got your knees in. - Agh! That is so painful. Wow, Colin.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28Imagine sitting in the bath and it's freezing cold

0:08:28 > 0:08:32and having to sit in there and put your head under, it's awful.

0:08:33 > 0:08:38- Good man, good man, brilliant. OK, let's...- Oh-h!

0:08:38 > 0:08:41Anything over a few minutes in there and you're going

0:08:41 > 0:08:42to get into hypothermia.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44You're going to try and do a little bit of breaststroke now, OK?

0:08:44 > 0:08:48On the count of three. One, two, three.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51Off you go. That's it. You've done it, you've done it.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54That's it, head up. Control your breathing. Breathe out.

0:08:54 > 0:08:56There's a shock system going.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58He's going to be short of breath, he's going

0:08:58 > 0:09:00to have trouble controlling how he swims

0:09:00 > 0:09:03and then also, mentally, he's got to keep himself in the water.

0:09:03 > 0:09:05My feet don't work.

0:09:05 > 0:09:10'That was awful. I've never experienced cold like that.

0:09:10 > 0:09:13'Now I need to wrap up warm and get inside immediately.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22'But I'm not giving up, so the training continues.'

0:09:24 > 0:09:27Try and stay relaxed, nice, long strokes.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30'I naturally swam breaststroke,

0:09:30 > 0:09:33'but Colin wants me to work on my front crawl, as in near freezing

0:09:33 > 0:09:36'temperatures, speed will be of the essence.'

0:09:36 > 0:09:40I want to have more than one stroke up our sleeve.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42'This training will help my muscle memory.

0:09:42 > 0:09:44'I have to get the technique right

0:09:44 > 0:09:47'and do it over and over again, because when I get into the

0:09:47 > 0:09:51'water, my brain will switch off and my body will need to take over.'

0:09:51 > 0:09:55That's the first bit out of the way and now it's on to the cold water.

0:10:00 > 0:10:04So, I'm on my way to the Lake District to do my very first

0:10:04 > 0:10:07open-water swim. I'm going to be swimming half a mile.

0:10:07 > 0:10:08'I am dreading this.'

0:10:08 > 0:10:13That was so cold. I don't want to play any more.

0:10:13 > 0:10:14'But I had to.'

0:10:14 > 0:10:16Oh, dear!

0:10:16 > 0:10:18'Colin was making sure of that.'

0:10:21 > 0:10:24Three, two, one, let's go.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28- That's good, that's good.- Oooh, that's cold. It's got even colder!

0:10:28 > 0:10:30OK, moving to front crawl now.

0:10:30 > 0:10:34'My goal today, half a mile.'

0:10:34 > 0:10:36You're doing really well, this is great. Really good.

0:10:36 > 0:10:38'But then disaster strikes.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40'The cold begins to take hold.'

0:10:40 > 0:10:45Stay with me, stay with me, stay with me here. How are you feeling, Radzi?

0:10:46 > 0:10:50I feel as though...my brain, I don't know, I'm not enjoying it.

0:10:51 > 0:10:56You're doing really well. Nearly there. There's the end.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04'I've done it.'

0:11:04 > 0:11:08Half a mile in the bag and I'm shattered.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13'Colin keeps pushing me.

0:11:13 > 0:11:17'The more time I spend in the cold water, the better prepared I'll be.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20'But there's another way to feel the chill - an ice bath.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23'So I've come to Man City Football Club to see exactly how

0:11:23 > 0:11:25'the cold affects my body.'

0:11:25 > 0:11:26I'm going to get

0:11:26 > 0:11:28what we call your resting heart rate,

0:11:28 > 0:11:30so your normal heart rate when you're not doing any activity.

0:11:30 > 0:11:34The only thing is, because we going to go into a stressful situation,

0:11:34 > 0:11:37what we expect, even at this stage now, it might begin to raise.

0:11:37 > 0:11:39So if we look at you now,

0:11:39 > 0:11:43yeah, you're a good resting heart rate at 75, so that's pretty normal.

0:11:43 > 0:11:47- You're not too worried about this? - Erm...how accurate is that thing?

0:11:47 > 0:11:54- Well, let's just see if it stays that way. It's 83, 89...- 93.- 93.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57You're making me nervous. OK, I'll get in.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59Oooh!

0:11:59 > 0:12:03Oh, that's that done, then, out we get.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06I'm about to start the timing. Work at six minutes.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09The longest six minutes of your life.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12Oh, my ankles throb. Oh!

0:12:13 > 0:12:18How long have we done? A minute and a half. OK. Oh!

0:12:18 > 0:12:24- This is not pleasant.- Time's up.- Is it up?- Let's get you out.- OK, yes.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27- Aggh!- Some very, very interesting things happened before you even

0:12:27 > 0:12:30entered the water. Your heart rate shot up. It went up to 130.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32- Did it really? - Which would be the equivalent

0:12:32 > 0:12:34of going from standing still to jogging.

0:12:34 > 0:12:40It's just the anxiety, fear, of it makes my body work harder, yeah.

0:12:40 > 0:12:42As much as I can, if I tried to focus my mind,

0:12:42 > 0:12:45it might actually help me make it easier.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47Yeah, it's all in the mind.

0:12:47 > 0:12:48'Next up, an open-water relay.'

0:12:48 > 0:12:51It is a lovely morning in Lake Windermere.

0:12:51 > 0:12:55It is 5.7 degrees, but this lot don't seem bothered.

0:12:55 > 0:12:59'Today my goal is to swim four 30-metre lengths in a relay with

0:12:59 > 0:13:01'another swimmer, but I've got a secret weapon -

0:13:01 > 0:13:04'record-breaking ice swim athlete Henri Kaarma.

0:13:04 > 0:13:06'And I've spotted a familiar face.'

0:13:06 > 0:13:08You can do this, you can do it.

0:13:08 > 0:13:10I don't know whether I can, to be honest.

0:13:10 > 0:13:12I think you need to go and get

0:13:12 > 0:13:13- your swimming cossie on. - Now?- Yes, go on.

0:13:13 > 0:13:16'But there's a twist.'

0:13:16 > 0:13:18I'm actually going to be doing this race with him.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21I'm part of his relay team and he has absolutely no idea.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24Good to have you on board, Henri.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26I'm going to be swimming the first and the fourth leg,

0:13:26 > 0:13:30Henri will be swimming the second and third. Let's go.

0:13:30 > 0:13:35- Radz, I'm doing it with you, mate. - Are you?- Yeah.- Are you really?- Yes!

0:13:35 > 0:13:39'So that's my team, but all too quickly it's our turn.

0:13:39 > 0:13:40'Off we go.

0:13:42 > 0:13:47He's just swum into the barrier! He is actually really quick.

0:13:50 > 0:13:53'The water was so cold.'

0:13:53 > 0:13:54Come on!

0:13:54 > 0:13:56'I was really starting to struggle.'

0:14:03 > 0:14:04Don't get in the water.

0:14:04 > 0:14:05Oh!

0:14:05 > 0:14:09That is just the most painful, worst thing I've ever done.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14'My ten weeks of preparation were over.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16'And it was time to put my training to the test.

0:14:19 > 0:14:20'It was Challenge Day.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36Good luck, Radzi!

0:14:36 > 0:14:39'From the beach, I knew the lake was choppy, but it was only

0:14:39 > 0:14:42'when I entered the water that I realised just how bad it was.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47OK, Radzi, this way! This way, Radzi! This way!

0:14:47 > 0:14:51'The waves make me lose my bearings, and straightaway, I go off course.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54'I've never swum in anything like this before.'

0:14:54 > 0:14:56Radzi, keep going, just follow the kayaker.

0:14:56 > 0:14:58He must have set off about ten minutes ago.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00I thought we would have seen him by now.

0:15:00 > 0:15:02We can't see anything.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05'The strong winds and choppiness of the water have now made

0:15:05 > 0:15:07'this challenge near on impossible for me.'

0:15:07 > 0:15:09Keep it going! Dig in!

0:15:09 > 0:15:13'So I start to doubt whether I even have enough in me to carry on.'

0:15:13 > 0:15:16OK, we've got the ferry about to go past now.

0:15:16 > 0:15:18And that's going to cause a few more waves for him,

0:15:18 > 0:15:20on top of the waves we already have.

0:15:20 > 0:15:23It's so choppy!

0:15:23 > 0:15:26Radzi, the freestyle is much faster!

0:15:26 > 0:15:27Dig in there!

0:15:27 > 0:15:29I keep digging in.

0:15:30 > 0:15:32This is a tough challenge.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34You're doing really well.

0:15:34 > 0:15:37OK, Radzi, you're halfway. This is great.

0:15:37 > 0:15:39Keep it going.

0:15:39 > 0:15:44'I take a deep breath and go for it. I have decided to fight this.

0:15:44 > 0:15:46'I will not be beaten.'

0:15:46 > 0:15:48We can see the crowds waiting for you.

0:15:48 > 0:15:50We'll get some shelter from these waves soon,

0:15:50 > 0:15:53so dig in for the next five minutes.

0:15:53 > 0:15:55'The cold is taking over. I am so tired,

0:15:55 > 0:15:58'but worse than that, I begin to lose all coordination.

0:15:58 > 0:16:02'Hypothermia is kicking in, and I start to worry that Colin is going

0:16:02 > 0:16:03'to have to pull me out.'

0:16:03 > 0:16:04I keep losing track.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07Head towards this boat. Keep going, Radzi.

0:16:07 > 0:16:11- He must be feeling like his muscles just don't want to work.- So much...

0:16:11 > 0:16:15You're nearly three-quarters, very nearly.

0:16:15 > 0:16:20'I can't hang around. I can't stop, not for a second.

0:16:20 > 0:16:22'I will finish this.'

0:16:22 > 0:16:24- Come on! Push!- Come on, Radzi!

0:16:26 > 0:16:28He's done it! he's done it!

0:16:28 > 0:16:31'I've made it. And I'm absolutely exhausted.'

0:16:43 > 0:16:47So proud of him. He's done it. That's huge.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50- See, you can do anything. - Yeah, go, Radzi.

0:16:54 > 0:16:58- # W-O-R-D, we're coming up!- #

0:16:58 > 0:17:02'Sport Relief inspires all kinds of people to do all sorts of things.

0:17:02 > 0:17:03'Like Little Mix.

0:17:03 > 0:17:07'They've recorded this year's official Sport Relief single.'

0:17:07 > 0:17:10# Everybody say

0:17:10 > 0:17:15# When you hear the call You've got to get it under way... #

0:17:15 > 0:17:18'Jesy, Jade, Perrie and Leigh-Anne also travelled to see how the money

0:17:18 > 0:17:20'you raise can make a real difference

0:17:20 > 0:17:23'to families living very difficult lives.'

0:17:29 > 0:17:33Hi, we are Little Mix and we are here in Liberia, West Coast of Africa.

0:17:33 > 0:17:36We're here to see what the money raised for Sport Relief can do.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38And understand why we should get involved.

0:17:38 > 0:17:42Here's our Blue Peter Sport Relief report.

0:17:42 > 0:17:44'This is Monrovia, the capital city of Liberia.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47'And it is the most overcrowded part of the country.

0:17:47 > 0:17:51'Nearly 8/10 people living here survive on less than 70p a day.

0:17:52 > 0:17:54'This area is known as Slipway.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57'A lot of people here have little or no money.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00'But Kemah and her family have found a way to make ends meet.'

0:18:00 > 0:18:05- What do you guys do for a living? - We sell fish.- You sell the fish.

0:18:05 > 0:18:07And how many children do you have?

0:18:09 > 0:18:13I have five children, plus my brother's children. Nine.

0:18:13 > 0:18:16- Nine, wow. Big family.- Yes.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20'Time to pay them a visit at home.'

0:18:20 > 0:18:24- How are you?- Aw! Let's pretend we're going to bed.

0:18:26 > 0:18:27'Bedtime altogether can be fun,

0:18:27 > 0:18:31'but daily life is often difficult in Slipway.

0:18:31 > 0:18:34'The pumps that supply water here are very unreliable.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37'There are few proper toilets, and for children like Jenny,

0:18:37 > 0:18:40'there isn't enough clean water to go around.'

0:18:41 > 0:18:45- TRANSLATION:- If we want to drink, we have to buy water from the shop.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50I am worried the area will make my children sick.

0:18:55 > 0:18:59I go to the toilet on the river bank. I go in a plastic bag.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02Then I throw it in the water.

0:19:02 > 0:19:04They don't have a toilet.

0:19:04 > 0:19:06This is where they go.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09As you can see, there's loads of rubbish, there's loads of sharp

0:19:09 > 0:19:12things on the floor, which is really, really dangerous.

0:19:12 > 0:19:16Obviously, this is where they fish, as well, to eat.

0:19:16 > 0:19:20This is also where they dump all the sewage. Not nice.

0:19:21 > 0:19:25'Because of this, children are at risk from cholera, whooping cough,

0:19:25 > 0:19:28'pneumonia and meningitis.

0:19:28 > 0:19:31'But many of the diseases here can be prevented by simple vaccines.'

0:19:33 > 0:19:38I wish it could be different. I want my children to have a better life.

0:19:39 > 0:19:41I go to get fish to sell,

0:19:41 > 0:19:46so that there is food to eat and the children can go to school.

0:19:46 > 0:19:49I don't want them to struggle like me.

0:19:53 > 0:19:56'On the other side of Monrovia is a township called West Point

0:19:56 > 0:19:59- 'and this is where Isata lives.' - Nice to meet you.

0:19:59 > 0:20:01'There are thousands of children here,

0:20:01 > 0:20:03'but there is no secondary school

0:20:03 > 0:20:06'and only one junior school, which families have to pay to attend.'

0:20:06 > 0:20:08Do you go to school?

0:20:08 > 0:20:10No.

0:20:10 > 0:20:12Why don't you go to school?

0:20:13 > 0:20:15My mum does not have enough money.

0:20:15 > 0:20:19'Lots of families in West Point can't afford food, let alone school,

0:20:19 > 0:20:22'and children often end up working instead of studying,

0:20:22 > 0:20:24'to help feed their family.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26'Isata makes and sells a ginger drink

0:20:26 > 0:20:28'and each bag brings in less than a penny.'

0:20:28 > 0:20:32- Does she work every day?- Yes.- Does she sell every day?- Yes, every day.

0:20:32 > 0:20:33- Every day.- Yes.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36OK, so then sometimes, she doesn't have time to play if she's tired.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38- No, no time.- OK, no time to play.

0:20:40 > 0:20:43'Around the corner from Isata lives Lucky,

0:20:43 > 0:20:47'whose life was turned upside down by the effects of poor sanitation.'

0:20:48 > 0:20:53Lucky's dad died of cholera, which was caused from water used here.

0:20:53 > 0:20:57Obviously, him not being here has just left the family with

0:20:57 > 0:21:00nothing, really.

0:21:01 > 0:21:04Whereabouts do you sleep?

0:21:04 > 0:21:06On the floor.

0:21:06 > 0:21:08Do you have a pillow?

0:21:08 > 0:21:10- No.- Or a blanket?

0:21:11 > 0:21:14I am a daddy's girl, and poor Lucky doesn't have a dad.

0:21:14 > 0:21:17He died from cholera from using dirty water.

0:21:17 > 0:21:20The worst thing is Lucky is still having to use it.

0:21:20 > 0:21:23'But there is hope.

0:21:23 > 0:21:25'You can make a change to the lives of children

0:21:25 > 0:21:27'like Isata, Jenny and Lucky.

0:21:27 > 0:21:30'Projects here which receive funding through Sport Relief are helping

0:21:30 > 0:21:32'people get better access to clean water,

0:21:32 > 0:21:34'the right medicines to treat diseases

0:21:34 > 0:21:36'and the chance to go to school.'

0:21:36 > 0:21:40The money you raise for Sport Relief can help to fund

0:21:40 > 0:21:42projects like the ones we visited today.

0:21:42 > 0:21:44And help families like the ones we've met.

0:21:44 > 0:21:49- So join in the fun and games.- Run, swim or cycle for Sport Relief Games.

0:21:49 > 0:21:50Thank you.

0:21:53 > 0:21:57'So far for Sport Relief, Team Blue Peter has swum one arduous mile,

0:21:57 > 0:21:59'we've built and raced three unique bikes.

0:22:01 > 0:22:04'But 31 was the magic number in our final challenge.

0:22:04 > 0:22:06'A run that was definitely fun.'

0:22:08 > 0:22:10We're here in Birmingham to visit three schools

0:22:10 > 0:22:13preparing for the race of their lives.

0:22:13 > 0:22:15Sport Relief's 31-legged race.

0:22:15 > 0:22:17Sounds crazy? Well, it is.

0:22:17 > 0:22:20'The 31-legged race is one of the most challenging sprints

0:22:20 > 0:22:22'anyone could undertake.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24'30 children will be joined by the ankle

0:22:24 > 0:22:27'and attempt to run a distance of 50 metres.

0:22:27 > 0:22:29'If anyone falls, the race will be halted

0:22:29 > 0:22:31'and they will waste precious time before starting again.

0:22:31 > 0:22:35'Three teams will compete, with the fastest two going through to

0:22:35 > 0:22:38'a final for the Sport Relief Games.

0:22:38 > 0:22:40'What each of the groups didn't know was that waiting outside

0:22:40 > 0:22:42'was their secret weapon - one of us.'

0:22:42 > 0:22:45- You are officially Team Barney. - Team Radzi!

0:22:45 > 0:22:47THEY CHEER

0:22:47 > 0:22:49Team Lindsey.

0:22:50 > 0:22:52'Then it was time to warm up.

0:22:52 > 0:22:56'I took the traditional approach.' Down and up. Good.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00'My master plan was that if you looked great, you would feel great.'

0:23:00 > 0:23:04# Radzi's team are rubbish! Lindsey's team are rubbish! #

0:23:04 > 0:23:06And I... Well, I had my own technique.

0:23:06 > 0:23:09# Radzi's team are rubbish! Lindsey's team are rubbish! #

0:23:11 > 0:23:14'The teams carried on training, and after a few weeks,

0:23:14 > 0:23:15'it was time for us to have a chat.'

0:23:17 > 0:23:21- Hi, everyone! Hi!- What have you been doing for training?

0:23:21 > 0:23:25- We've been jumping on the mat so far. - Jumping on the mat.

0:23:25 > 0:23:29- So, have people been tripping over a little bit?- Yes.

0:23:29 > 0:23:33- How confident are you that we're going to win this?- About a nine.

0:23:33 > 0:23:35Nine! I can go for a nine.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39So, at last it was race day.

0:23:39 > 0:23:40We're here bright and early

0:23:40 > 0:23:43on a very chilly morning at Birmingham NEC Arena...

0:23:43 > 0:23:45..to find out which two teams are going to come out on top.

0:23:45 > 0:23:49It's obvious, really. My team is going to come out on top.

0:23:49 > 0:23:51If by yours, you mean me, Barney...

0:23:51 > 0:23:53'Each team will get three chances to run,

0:23:53 > 0:23:56'but only the fastest two will go through to the final.'

0:23:56 > 0:24:00Just get this going. 'First up in heat one, it was Team Barney.

0:24:02 > 0:24:03And they're off.

0:24:05 > 0:24:09- THEY'RE good!- 'But just when we thought it was going well...

0:24:12 > 0:24:14'It was bad.

0:24:14 > 0:24:18'But when you fall, you have to pick yourself up as quickly as possible.'

0:24:19 > 0:24:21They are fast.

0:24:24 > 0:24:26That was really good, wasn't it?

0:24:26 > 0:24:27- Your team!- Your team are good!

0:24:27 > 0:24:29They were properly organised.

0:24:29 > 0:24:31'Next up, Team Radzi.'

0:24:31 > 0:24:32Are we going to win?

0:24:40 > 0:24:44- 'My teams started well.' - Really good rhythm.

0:24:44 > 0:24:45Until...

0:24:47 > 0:24:48A massive set back.

0:24:50 > 0:24:55We got back on our feet, too, but would we be as quick as Team Barney?

0:25:00 > 0:25:04- Yes!- 'But then it was time for me to inject a touch of Girl Power.'

0:25:04 > 0:25:05Team Lindsey!

0:25:06 > 0:25:10They're driven, they're determined, they know what they're doing.

0:25:16 > 0:25:17They are bit out of time.

0:25:17 > 0:25:20- You've got one down. - One down. It's OK.

0:25:20 > 0:25:23'It was clear that Team Lindsey were really having problems

0:25:23 > 0:25:25'finding their feet in this race.'

0:25:25 > 0:25:29But this is their first run, they have two more attempts at this.

0:25:29 > 0:25:31They finished. Well done, guys.

0:25:31 > 0:25:34- Well done.- Well done.

0:25:41 > 0:25:44Don't you want to win this? I don't care about taking part.

0:25:44 > 0:25:46I don't want, I AM going to win.

0:25:46 > 0:25:48Well, the good news is, Lindsey isn't.

0:25:48 > 0:25:50'It's a bit too early to get cheeky, Barney,

0:25:50 > 0:25:52'let's just see how your second run goes.'

0:25:55 > 0:25:57All down!

0:25:57 > 0:25:59That's the worst fall we've had so far.

0:26:01 > 0:26:04'And after that, things only got worse for Team Barney.'

0:26:05 > 0:26:07We're having a nightmare.

0:26:07 > 0:26:09'They fell. And they fell. And they...'

0:26:09 > 0:26:13I feel like nerves are getting the better of them.

0:26:13 > 0:26:16Well, I am relieved that is over.

0:26:16 > 0:26:20All we need now is a good last third run.

0:26:20 > 0:26:21We're off.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24'Where as Team Radzi continued to improve.'

0:26:24 > 0:26:26They haven't fallen once.

0:26:31 > 0:26:33Yes!

0:26:33 > 0:26:36'And things started to look a whole lot better for Team Lindsey.

0:26:37 > 0:26:39'With the final heat fast approaching,

0:26:39 > 0:26:42'it was all still to play for.'

0:26:42 > 0:26:43Now we've seen them go horribly wrong,

0:26:43 > 0:26:46this is the only chance they've got to prove themselves.

0:26:46 > 0:26:48Yes, yes.

0:26:48 > 0:26:50They're off to a flyer again.

0:26:51 > 0:26:54'This had to be the one.'

0:26:54 > 0:26:57Wow, I thought they were hanging together then.

0:26:57 > 0:27:00'But this was not going to be a repeat of heat two.

0:27:00 > 0:27:01They've done it, they've done it.

0:27:04 > 0:27:06That was brilliant!

0:27:06 > 0:27:08That was brilliant. Fives, fives.

0:27:08 > 0:27:10'Yeah, Barney, your team had done well,

0:27:10 > 0:27:12'but could my team do better still?'

0:27:23 > 0:27:25I think you've done it. Wow!

0:27:25 > 0:27:29- I think that was even quicker than last time.- Super! Super!

0:27:29 > 0:27:32'So, it was the final run of the race.' I'm scared.

0:27:32 > 0:27:36Hopefully heat three is the one for Team Lindsey.

0:27:36 > 0:27:40'My team had to perform, but could they hold it together?

0:27:41 > 0:27:45'It was a great performance and I couldn't be more proud,

0:27:45 > 0:27:48but Team Lindsey's fastest time was not quite fast

0:27:48 > 0:27:52- 'enough to see them through to the final.- With 27 seconds, Team Radzi

0:27:52 > 0:27:55- 'qualified first. - With Team Barney not far behind.'

0:27:55 > 0:27:57THEY CHEER
