0:00:11 > 0:00:14- We're celebrating with this action-packed show.- One question.

0:00:14 > 0:00:16What's he doing here?

0:00:16 > 0:00:19Exterminate! Exterminate!

0:00:34 > 0:00:39Hello! Now, if you absolutely love Doctor Who, don't go anywhere,

0:00:39 > 0:00:42cos we have such a big show planned today

0:00:42 > 0:00:45to celebrate the return of the Doctor to our screens. You'll love it.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48For lots of reasons. One of them is this guy -

0:00:48 > 0:00:50in real life Dan Starkey, a legend -

0:00:50 > 0:00:52but in Doctor Who, he plays Commander Strax.

0:00:52 > 0:00:56Dan'll be talking us through what it's like to play this funny alien.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58Plus, we're joined by this lovely bunch

0:00:58 > 0:01:01who will help me show you how to make one of these -

0:01:01 > 0:01:03your very own Doctor Who T-shirt.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05So make sure you don't go anywhere.

0:01:05 > 0:01:08Last year, we launched the Doctor Who competition

0:01:08 > 0:01:12to design a sonic device for Strax, Madame Vastra and Jenny Flint.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15Loads of you got in touch - nearly 4,000 of you entered.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17These are the top 45 entries

0:01:17 > 0:01:21that all earned themselves an orange competition badge.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23From there, three very lucky winners were chosen

0:01:23 > 0:01:27and this is what happened when they got to see their creations in action.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34'When we asked you to come up with designs for sonic devices

0:01:34 > 0:01:37'for Strax, Madame Vastra

0:01:37 > 0:01:40'and Jenny, you entered in your thousands.

0:01:44 > 0:01:49'Each and every one of the 3,500 entries was looked at...'

0:01:49 > 0:01:52- It's an invisibility button. - I can see that being of great use.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55- '..analysed...'- It's a sonic walkie-talkie, basically.

0:01:55 > 0:01:59- '..and debated.'- I thought three. - Cute.- Very good.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01Outstanding, yeah.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04'The quality of the entries was high,

0:02:04 > 0:02:07'but a team of judges from Blue Peter and Doctor Who

0:02:07 > 0:02:09'eventually selected the top 45.'

0:02:09 > 0:02:11I've got one last vote.

0:02:11 > 0:02:16'There was huge creativity shown in the designs sent to us.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20'This sonic magnifying glass turns into a shield.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23'But the job of picking a winning 3 from the final 45

0:02:23 > 0:02:28'meant heading to the home of Steven Moffat, the big boss of Doctor Who.'

0:02:28 > 0:02:31I was absolutely thrilled to see all the entries.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34It was like seeing the prop cupboard for the future.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36It's a risk, but just cos it's a lovely idea,

0:02:36 > 0:02:39I'm going to stick on there...

0:02:39 > 0:02:42'Steven wasn't just judging the quality of the designs

0:02:42 > 0:02:44'but also how the gadget might

0:02:44 > 0:02:47'fit into a brand-new episode of Doctor Who.'

0:02:47 > 0:02:50You've got to think simple and visual.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52We have to keep in mind that it actually gets used

0:02:52 > 0:02:56and doesn't give too much power. There are some brilliant ideas.

0:02:57 > 0:03:01The sonic yo-yo, which does EVERYTHING!

0:03:01 > 0:03:02OK, good.

0:03:02 > 0:03:06Light flashes when an enemy is sensed nearby.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08- I think that's cool.- That's usable.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10That is too big for a story.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12- It's a very clever idea.- Hmm.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15We can get that in quite easily. That fits quite nicely.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17I'm going to vote for that one.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19'Choosing was incredibly tough

0:03:19 > 0:03:22'but there could only be three winners.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24'And it's these three!

0:03:24 > 0:03:28'Amber, Arthur and Connor.

0:03:28 > 0:03:32'They haven't just won the chance to have their designs in an episode,

0:03:32 > 0:03:35'they're going, with me, behind the scenes

0:03:35 > 0:03:39'on the filming of the first episode of the new series.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43'The first winning design is the sonic lorgnette.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45'It's a gadget for Strax

0:03:45 > 0:03:48'and was designed by Arthur, who won the age 10 to 12 category.'

0:03:48 > 0:03:51A sonic lorgnette, which is a beautiful design.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54You want to pick it up and hold it.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57I think it'll be funny seeing Strax's big, clumsy hands

0:03:57 > 0:03:59holding that.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03- Is this Arthur?- Yeah.- How do you do? - How do you do?- I'm Commander Strax.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05Say "ah".

0:04:05 > 0:04:06Ahh...

0:04:06 > 0:04:09It's got three glasses.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12There's a green X-ray lens...

0:04:12 > 0:04:15Enviable spleen! Well done!

0:04:15 > 0:04:20..a yellow diagnostic lens, to see people's illnesses...

0:04:20 > 0:04:22Deflected narcissism.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24Traces of passive-aggressive.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27..and a thermal lens, so you're ready for action.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30Excellent. It's always good to be ready for action.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33How does it feel to see Strax using your device?

0:04:33 > 0:04:36Very cool. It's amazing.

0:04:36 > 0:04:38'The next winning design is the sonic gauntlet.

0:04:38 > 0:04:43'It's for Jenny Flint and was designed by Connor,

0:04:43 > 0:04:45'who won the age 12 to 15 category.'

0:04:45 > 0:04:48We love this because it looks really cool.

0:04:48 > 0:04:53It looks Victorian but it looks technological at the same time.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56I can just imagine Jenny Flint, when she goes out,

0:04:56 > 0:04:58needs something like that on her arm.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01Here's jenny Flint with the gauntlet! What do you think?

0:05:01 > 0:05:03That's so cool.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06I think this has got a lot of different uses.

0:05:06 > 0:05:08It's mainly for breaking locks.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12And also, the other day, I used it to scan things

0:05:12 > 0:05:16- for a scene.- It's a good, sneaky device. It's very Jenny.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18It is very Jenny. Cheeky.

0:05:18 > 0:05:20'The final winning design is

0:05:20 > 0:05:22the sonic hatpin for Madame Vastra,

0:05:22 > 0:05:26'as designed by Amber, who won the age 6 to 10 category.'

0:05:26 > 0:05:29It can actually summon her carriage.

0:05:29 > 0:05:31It's funny, it makes absolute sense

0:05:31 > 0:05:35and it's got a dinosaur feather in it, which sells it to me.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38- That's the dinosaur feather.- Yes.

0:05:38 > 0:05:42That's just a bit of fashion.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44Have you used the device yet?

0:05:44 > 0:05:49I haven't used it yet. We haven't got to that bit of filming,

0:05:49 > 0:05:52but I've had my hat on and it's always in my hat!

0:05:52 > 0:05:56- Brilliant.- I think you guys should be really pleased with your designs.

0:05:56 > 0:06:00- They look incredible in real life, don't they?- Yeah.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02'But the prize doesn't end there.

0:06:02 > 0:06:04'We're getting the chance to see

0:06:04 > 0:06:07'the filming of one of the very first scenes

0:06:07 > 0:06:09'to feature the new Doctor.'

0:06:09 > 0:06:11And...action!

0:06:11 > 0:06:15'Although it looks like Peter Capaldi has it easy in this scene!

0:06:15 > 0:06:16'He's asleep.'

0:06:16 > 0:06:19- You saw him change.- I know.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21I know that.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24Cut there! >

0:06:24 > 0:06:27How's that? Good. >

0:06:27 > 0:06:30'And shortly after filming, we managed to wake Peter up,

0:06:30 > 0:06:33'ready to find out a bit more about the new Doctor.'

0:06:33 > 0:06:37What was your first reaction when you found out you were the Doctor?

0:06:37 > 0:06:40I just laughed, cos I couldn't believe it.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44I couldn't really believe that someone would give me this job,

0:06:44 > 0:06:48because I'd been such a fan of the show for so long.

0:06:48 > 0:06:50It was very, very exciting.

0:07:00 > 0:07:04- How are you going to play the Doctor?- I'm going to play him

0:07:04 > 0:07:06as well as I can,

0:07:06 > 0:07:10but if you mean what style, in terms of what kind of a Doctor

0:07:10 > 0:07:14he's going to be, we're just starting on this journey ourselves.

0:07:14 > 0:07:16We don't really know who he is,

0:07:16 > 0:07:19but I think he'll be quite... He's fun.

0:07:19 > 0:07:23He's funny. But he likes people to get on with their work,

0:07:23 > 0:07:27he's quite impatient with people, but he's fun.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29But he is mysterious.

0:07:30 > 0:07:35Kidneys! I've got new kidneys! I don't like the colour.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39- How old are you?- Do you mean me, really, or Doctor Who?

0:07:39 > 0:07:42- Doctor Who. - Doctor Who's over 2,000 years old.

0:07:42 > 0:07:48That's official. So I'm way too young to be playing this part.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50Stay calm.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52Just one question.

0:07:52 > 0:07:56Do you happen to know how to fly this thing?

0:07:56 > 0:08:00This series of Doctor Who looks set to be more captivating than ever,

0:08:00 > 0:08:03with a brand-new Doctor leading the way.

0:08:03 > 0:08:07Thanks to these guys, the Paternoster Gang are ready to save the planet

0:08:07 > 0:08:10and fight off aliens using their new sonic devices.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13DEEP THRUMMING Oh-oh!

0:08:17 > 0:08:20Keep your eyes peeled,

0:08:20 > 0:08:23because all of the gadgets are going to appear in the first episode

0:08:23 > 0:08:26and if you can't wait that long, fear not,

0:08:26 > 0:08:29because we have them in the studio.

0:08:29 > 0:08:32Filming's finished now but they're looking pretty intact.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34Have a look at this one.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37This is Connor's gauntlet. It looks the same as the original design.

0:08:37 > 0:08:41Of course, there's Amber's hatpin, which looks beautiful.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43I can't wait to see that in use.

0:08:43 > 0:08:47And then last but not least, this is Arthur's lorgnette.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49We didn't see the finished version of it, but here it is.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53You can see all the different colours that he wanted,

0:08:53 > 0:08:56and that yellow one, the diagnostic lens, is looking very dirty,

0:08:56 > 0:08:59like it's been used a lot by Strax. I can't wait to see that.

0:08:59 > 0:09:01A massive well done and congratulations

0:09:01 > 0:09:05- to all of our winners. What do you make of those, Barn?- Amazing.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08Amber, Arthur and Connor get the orange competition winner's badge

0:09:08 > 0:09:12because they're not just geniuses designing toys for the Doctor

0:09:12 > 0:09:14and various aliens, but they're also very creative.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17Look at the big badge wall.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20Let's start with quite possibly THE best picture ever designed

0:09:20 > 0:09:23by anybody in the world since the dawn of time.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26There's me as the Doctor, Lindsey as the Assistant

0:09:26 > 0:09:29- and Radzi as the bad guy. - I want to be the Doctor, though.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32- I think we should swap. You can be the Assistant.- It's not happening.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35Take a look at this.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37This is a Dalek made out of chocolate. Marion made this.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40I'm guessing she ate it in one go afterwards.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42I love the white chocolate buttons.

0:09:42 > 0:09:46Maybe that's a new safety feature - there's a cherry on there!

0:09:46 > 0:09:50Mary's drawn this. I'm the Doctor, which I'm delighted about,

0:09:50 > 0:09:51Lindsey's the Assistant.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53Why do you keep getting the Doctor?

0:09:53 > 0:09:55I don't know, and I don't know why

0:09:55 > 0:09:59I'm sucking a lollipop, but I am. Mary, who's ten, designed this.

0:09:59 > 0:10:03- This is Peter Capaldi.- He doesn't look impressed.- He's saying, "Huh!"

0:10:03 > 0:10:07He knows he's the new Doctor and isn't happy I'm there.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11- I love this stuff!- This is Thomas, who's nine.

0:10:11 > 0:10:13He's gone all around the country

0:10:13 > 0:10:16because he is a Doctor Who super-fan

0:10:16 > 0:10:20and he's gone to all the different locations where they film Doctor Who

0:10:20 > 0:10:23and he's written a blog about it and put it online.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25We think it's an incredible effort, Thomas.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27Blue Peter badges on the way

0:10:27 > 0:10:30to all of you people who are lovely and creative.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33There are lots of Blue Peter badges you can apply for,

0:10:33 > 0:10:35including the Blue Peter sport badge 2014.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38- It's dead easy to get one, isn't it, Lindsey?- It is.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41All you have to do is inspire a family member or friend

0:10:41 > 0:10:45to get involved with a new sport. All the details are on the website.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48If you applied last year, you can apply again if you want to.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50Just introduce a new friend to your sport

0:10:50 > 0:10:54or why not actually go and try a new sport together?

0:10:54 > 0:10:58- I want two sport badges. - Get involved. Radzi!

0:10:58 > 0:11:00Thank you. Hello, my fantastic four.

0:11:00 > 0:11:02- What are your names?- Tom!- Maddie!

0:11:02 > 0:11:06- Jack!- Naomi! - And welcome to Blue Peter.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09You guys are going to help me show you how to make

0:11:09 > 0:11:12your very own Doctor Who T-shirt,

0:11:12 > 0:11:14like one of these.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16That one's got a TARDIS

0:11:16 > 0:11:18and it looks like the middle of outer space.

0:11:18 > 0:11:22But before we get to the making, I have to ask you guys,

0:11:22 > 0:11:26you are all Doctor Who fans, but, Tom, what do you love so much?

0:11:26 > 0:11:29It's been on for so many years, and that means when you watch it

0:11:29 > 0:11:33with your family, like I watch it with my mum and dad,

0:11:33 > 0:11:36you compare what the differences were from then till now.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38There's lots of puzzles in Doctor Who

0:11:38 > 0:11:42so you can find out, if you solve them, what's going to happen.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44That is a fantastic answer.

0:11:44 > 0:11:48Naomi, not all the Blue Peter viewers will have seen Doctor Who,

0:11:48 > 0:11:51so why do you think they should watch it?

0:11:51 > 0:11:55The costumes and make-up and how they act, and the movement

0:11:55 > 0:11:59and the sound effects are just really good

0:11:59 > 0:12:02and it makes you feel like you really want to watch it again.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05You've definitely sold it to me.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08- Shall we start making the T-shirt? - Yes.- Absolutely.

0:12:08 > 0:12:15All the details you will need are on the Blue Peter website.

0:12:15 > 0:12:18So sit back, relax and watch us make this.

0:12:18 > 0:12:23- So, what will we need? Maddie?- A template off the Blue Peter website.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26- Yes.- An old toothbrush and a pair of scissors.- Perfect.

0:12:26 > 0:12:30- Jack.- A piece of card, fabric pen and a paintbrush.

0:12:30 > 0:12:34Perfect. And a plain-coloured T-shirt as well.

0:12:34 > 0:12:38So the very first thing that you do is go on to the Blue Peter website,

0:12:38 > 0:12:41you print out a Doctor Who template and you cut it out, like this.

0:12:41 > 0:12:45Before we stick that onto our T-shirt,

0:12:45 > 0:12:49we need to make sure that any paint does not seep through

0:12:49 > 0:12:52the material and ruin our T-shirt.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55So we put it inside the T-shirt. I'm going to make sure

0:12:55 > 0:12:59this is absolutely flat, because that'll become our canvas.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02Then we take our template

0:13:02 > 0:13:06and we stick it down, and you'll notice we have tack on the back

0:13:06 > 0:13:09and that'll help secure this in place.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12Now, this is the part where you guys can join in,

0:13:12 > 0:13:14the messy part, the fun part.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17We take our old toothbrush

0:13:17 > 0:13:19and dip it into our paint.

0:13:19 > 0:13:23Now, it's worth taking off the excess there.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26This is what's going to give us our space effect

0:13:26 > 0:13:29so the less paint you have on the toothbrush, the better.

0:13:29 > 0:13:33Then we take our paintbrush, hold it at the other side

0:13:33 > 0:13:37and then flick the paint back towards you,

0:13:37 > 0:13:40and this is what's going to give us our space effect.

0:13:40 > 0:13:44Some of these, you can see, are slightly bigger than others.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47Ideally, we want as small globules as possible,

0:13:47 > 0:13:51as that what really gives it that out-of-this-world look.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55Now, the small amount of paint actually means it's going to take

0:13:55 > 0:13:59quite a while to do it but it really is worth it, believe me.

0:13:59 > 0:14:03Another top tip is to focus your flicking on the edge

0:14:03 > 0:14:05of the template.

0:14:05 > 0:14:10Although it takes longer, it's the perfect time to ask Maddie

0:14:10 > 0:14:13what it means to be a Doctor Who super-fan.

0:14:13 > 0:14:17You never miss any episodes because you love it that much.

0:14:17 > 0:14:21Outside of school, we've got a Doctor Who TARDIS.

0:14:21 > 0:14:24- You've got your very own Doctor Who TARDIS?- Yes.- Wow.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27- Do you get to play in that? - Sometimes.

0:14:27 > 0:14:30That is unbelievable. Jack, Doctor Who is the Time Lord

0:14:30 > 0:14:32and he can travel through space and time,

0:14:32 > 0:14:36so if you could travel through space and time, where would you go?

0:14:36 > 0:14:38I'd go to the '66 World Cup final.

0:14:38 > 0:14:43When England won? It was the golden era of English football.

0:14:43 > 0:14:47Tom, what would you do if you could go absolutely anywhere?

0:14:47 > 0:14:50I'd go back in time

0:14:50 > 0:14:57- to the Cavern Club to watch the Beatles.- Would you really?- Yeah.

0:14:57 > 0:14:59You are a cultured man, Tom.

0:14:59 > 0:15:02Now, if we had longer we would carry on with this

0:15:02 > 0:15:05cos, actually, when you start off, the effect really takes shape

0:15:05 > 0:15:08once you've been flicking for quite a while, but we don't

0:15:08 > 0:15:12have much time, so we're going to start the peel-off of our template.

0:15:12 > 0:15:15And I would normally leave it to dry, as well,

0:15:15 > 0:15:17but just to show you the effect of this,

0:15:17 > 0:15:19you can see I've made a start.

0:15:19 > 0:15:21Guys, let's have a look at how you've got on.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24And, by the way, if you want to see what it looks like

0:15:24 > 0:15:28when there aren't big globules, take a look at what these guys have done.

0:15:28 > 0:15:30this is absolutely fantastic.

0:15:30 > 0:15:34In fact, Jack, that is absolutely perfect, my friend.

0:15:34 > 0:15:36And if you want to take the T-shirt to the next level,

0:15:36 > 0:15:39if we go back to the original T-shirts that we showed you,

0:15:39 > 0:15:41you can see that actually we've got two different

0:15:41 > 0:15:44coloured paints there and we've just added some detail

0:15:44 > 0:15:48from the template, really to just give it that added effect.

0:15:48 > 0:15:50Well, guys, you've been fantastic,

0:15:50 > 0:15:52I've been below average,

0:15:52 > 0:15:53so thank you.

0:15:54 > 0:15:57- They're amazing, I want one. - Nice one, Radz.

0:15:57 > 0:15:59Now, if you just cannot get enough of our favourite Time Lord,

0:15:59 > 0:16:01you're going to love what's coming up next.

0:16:01 > 0:16:03Yes, it's time to get the Doctor Who lowdown

0:16:03 > 0:16:05in song form with Brett Domino.

0:16:05 > 0:16:07If you're wondering what TARDIS really stands for,

0:16:07 > 0:16:09it's Totally Awesome Rhythm in this...Song.

0:16:09 > 0:16:10- Stop it!- OK, fine.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20MUSIC STARTS

0:16:20 > 0:16:22# Who are you?

0:16:22 > 0:16:25Who is the Doctor, Who is the Doctor

0:16:25 > 0:16:27# Doctor Who

0:16:27 > 0:16:29Will the real Doctor please stand up?

0:16:29 > 0:16:31HE RAPS: Well, people talk about the Doctor

0:16:31 > 0:16:34- Who?- It's the Doctor - Who?- The Doctor.- Who?

0:16:34 > 0:16:35- Stop it now.- Sorry.

0:16:35 > 0:16:37He's been on TV since 1963

0:16:37 > 0:16:39And in that time he has regenerated frequently

0:16:39 > 0:16:42The guy never visibly ages, he's had 12 different faces

0:16:42 > 0:16:45But that's just normal for a Time Lord, apparently.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48His first incarnation was as William Hartnell

0:16:48 > 0:16:50A crotchety chap with a wizardly sparkle

0:16:50 > 0:16:53It was so long ago it was in black-and-white

0:16:53 > 0:16:55You've probably never heard of him, but your grandparents might

0:16:55 > 0:16:58Next up, he was known as a cosmic hobo

0:16:58 > 0:17:00A bit of rough around the edges as you'll see from this photo

0:17:00 > 0:17:03Played by Patrick Troughton, this version was a bit nicer

0:17:03 > 0:17:05He was the first Doctor to use the sonic screwdriver

0:17:05 > 0:17:08Then Jon Pertwee became the third Doctor

0:17:08 > 0:17:10dressing like a kind of vampire prog rock star

0:17:10 > 0:17:13His TARDIS was disabled by the Time Lord people

0:17:13 > 0:17:16And he had to drive around in a bright yellow motor vehicle

0:17:16 > 0:17:18One of the best known Doctors, number four, Tom Baker,

0:17:18 > 0:17:21The longest-running Doctor, he was a scarf crusader

0:17:21 > 0:17:23Obsessed with jelly sweets, he had a robot dog, K-9

0:17:23 > 0:17:26For him the TARDIS was fixed so he's back travelling through time

0:17:26 > 0:17:28The fifth Doctor had a quite unique accessory

0:17:28 > 0:17:31He sported on his left lapel a single stick of celery

0:17:31 > 0:17:34This turned purple in Praxis gas-related jeopardy

0:17:34 > 0:17:36but it didn't help him much in the Caves of Androzani

0:17:36 > 0:17:38where he succumbed to spectrox toxaemia

0:17:38 > 0:17:39and was forced to regenerate...

0:17:39 > 0:17:41Actually, that doesn't really work, does it, that line?

0:17:41 > 0:17:44# Who are you?

0:17:44 > 0:17:46Who is the Doctor, Who is the Doctor

0:17:46 > 0:17:49# Doctor Who

0:17:49 > 0:17:51Doctor Who, Doctor, Doctor Who

0:17:51 > 0:17:54# Who are you?

0:17:54 > 0:17:57Who is the Doctor, Who is the Doctor

0:17:57 > 0:17:59# Doctor Who

0:17:59 > 0:18:02Will the real Doctor please stand up?

0:18:02 > 0:18:04Next was Colin Baker, no relation to Tom

0:18:04 > 0:18:06Famous for wearing a jacket that looked like it had gone wrong

0:18:06 > 0:18:09He fixed the chameleon circuit so the TARDIS could blend in

0:18:09 > 0:18:12with its surroundings instead of being stuck as the police box thing

0:18:12 > 0:18:14Sylvester McCoy came next, he was Doctor number seven

0:18:14 > 0:18:17Look at his umbrella handle, it looks like a question mark

0:18:17 > 0:18:19In '89 the show got cancelled, which was pretty gloomy

0:18:19 > 0:18:22But it was brought back seven years later as a TV movie

0:18:22 > 0:18:24Paul McGann was the man to bring the Doctor back to life

0:18:24 > 0:18:27In a plot based in San Francisco 1999

0:18:27 > 0:18:29It was another nine years, though, before we saw the Doc again

0:18:29 > 0:18:32But when we did it was the start of Doctor Who - the next gen

0:18:32 > 0:18:35Christopher Ecclestone, a proper northern Doctor

0:18:35 > 0:18:37Wore a black leather jacket and spoke like a bloke from Salford

0:18:37 > 0:18:40He travelled with Billie Piper, or as her character was called, Rose

0:18:40 > 0:18:43He regenerated after just one series and 13 episodes

0:18:43 > 0:18:45Doctor number 10 - nearly there - David Tennant

0:18:45 > 0:18:47Now we're getting to the ones you'll most likely remember

0:18:47 > 0:18:50He battled all the big names - Cybermen, Daleks, the Master

0:18:50 > 0:18:53Wore a pretty sharp suit that made him look like a hipster headmaster

0:18:53 > 0:18:55David then regenerated into Matt Smith

0:18:55 > 0:18:57Another young Doctor who liked to dress swish

0:18:57 > 0:19:00All tweed jackets and bowties, not unlike Doctor number two

0:19:00 > 0:19:02Three years he was the Doctor,

0:19:02 > 0:19:04Which then brings us up to present day

0:19:04 > 0:19:05Over 50 years later

0:19:05 > 0:19:08The longest running television series of its nature

0:19:08 > 0:19:10What will the 12th Doctor be like? Garibaldi?

0:19:10 > 0:19:14All we know is that he'll look a lot like Peter Capaldi

0:19:16 > 0:19:18# Who are you?

0:19:18 > 0:19:20Who is the Doctor, Who is the Doctor

0:19:20 > 0:19:23# Doctor Who

0:19:23 > 0:19:26Will the real Doctor please stand up?

0:19:26 > 0:19:28Obviously, there's tonnes of stuff we don't have time to mention

0:19:28 > 0:19:31Like how exactly the Doctor is able to travel through time dimensions

0:19:31 > 0:19:33And the fact he's travelled with numerous companions -

0:19:33 > 0:19:36Susan, Perry, Clara, Jack, to name a few at random

0:19:36 > 0:19:38There's also all the stuff about there being a War Doctor

0:19:38 > 0:19:41Who was between the eighth and ninth but wasn't a Doctor proper

0:19:41 > 0:19:44It's all very complex, can't really explain it through song

0:19:44 > 0:19:46There's over 50 years of storyline so it would take far too long

0:19:49 > 0:19:51# Who are you?

0:19:51 > 0:19:54Who is the Doctor, Who is the Doctor

0:19:54 > 0:19:56# Doctor Who

0:19:56 > 0:19:59Doctor Who, Doctor, Doctor Who

0:19:59 > 0:20:01# Who are you?

0:20:01 > 0:20:04Who is the Doctor, Who is the Doctor

0:20:04 > 0:20:07# Doctor Who. #

0:20:07 > 0:20:09Will the real Doctor please stand up?

0:20:09 > 0:20:11MUSIC STOPS

0:20:18 > 0:20:19Thanks very much, boys.

0:20:19 > 0:20:21Have you ever heard a song they've written that you don't love?

0:20:21 > 0:20:24I don't know anybody on planet Earth that can do what they do.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26Maybe they're aliens. Speaking of which,

0:20:26 > 0:20:28my favourite thing about Doctor Who has to be the aliens.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31So many different characters from so many planets

0:20:31 > 0:20:33and it gives me the chance to say Raxacoricofallapatorius -

0:20:33 > 0:20:36one of my favourite words, because it's Doctor Who -

0:20:36 > 0:20:39everyone loves it, and my favourite character is here to talk to us.

0:20:39 > 0:20:40Please give a huge...

0:20:40 > 0:20:42- TARDIS WHOOSHING - Oh, I can hear him arriving.

0:20:42 > 0:20:45Yes, that familiar sound - a round of applause for Dan Starkey!

0:20:45 > 0:20:47CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:20:48 > 0:20:50- Hello, sir.- Hello.

0:20:50 > 0:20:52Welcome to the studio, it's good to see you.

0:20:52 > 0:20:54Of course, I want to call you Dan, cos that's your real name,

0:20:54 > 0:20:56but you are Commander Strax to me.

0:20:56 > 0:20:58Let's take a look at you in the actual show.

0:20:58 > 0:20:59He's a very familiar character.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02He's a bit like a grumpy kid, really, isn't he?

0:21:02 > 0:21:04Yes, he's an angry potato.

0:21:04 > 0:21:05Brilliant!

0:21:05 > 0:21:08Luckily, in real life you don't look that much like a potato.

0:21:08 > 0:21:10You have to wear prosthetics to achieve that effect,

0:21:10 > 0:21:12so let's talk about your head that's on the table.

0:21:12 > 0:21:15Yes, well, we've got Commander Strax's head here -

0:21:15 > 0:21:19that gets glued onto mine, which is quite an involved process.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21It's got two pieces to it

0:21:21 > 0:21:25so, as you can see here, there's a join that you can see

0:21:25 > 0:21:28that usually gets blended up, cos you can't see it on Strax there.

0:21:28 > 0:21:31So there's a head part and a mask part,

0:21:31 > 0:21:34and so first of all this head part goes onto mine

0:21:34 > 0:21:36and it takes about three people to wrench it out,

0:21:36 > 0:21:37cos it's quite a snug fit.

0:21:37 > 0:21:40As you can see, it's quite solid on the inside.

0:21:40 > 0:21:42Yeah, it is like a foam, as well, it's quite soft.

0:21:42 > 0:21:44Yes, sort of a silicon foam,

0:21:44 > 0:21:48and either side of my ears, it's about three inches or so,

0:21:48 > 0:21:51so once it's on I'm a little bit hard of hearing.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53So it always makes it a bit interesting!

0:21:53 > 0:21:55Of course, other actors have lines and you have to listen to your cue

0:21:55 > 0:21:58- and if you can't hear it that makes it quite tough.- Yeah.

0:21:58 > 0:22:00Then this part gets glued onto my face

0:22:00 > 0:22:01and it all gets blended together.

0:22:01 > 0:22:03It's brilliant. So that takes how long?

0:22:03 > 0:22:06- It takes about three hours or so. - That is a long time, isn't it?

0:22:06 > 0:22:09It's a little while, but usually it's very early in the morning

0:22:09 > 0:22:11so I have a doze and then I wake up and Strax is there in the mirror.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14- That's a bit like a nightmare, really, isn't it?- Yes!

0:22:14 > 0:22:17So once you're into character you then have to play Strax on set.

0:22:17 > 0:22:19What do you do to get yourself into that mindset to play him?

0:22:19 > 0:22:22- Cos he's such fun to play. - He's fantastic.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24I mean, it's very lucky in that the lines are very good,

0:22:24 > 0:22:26so it always comes from the script,

0:22:26 > 0:22:28so I can see what Strax is doing in this episode,

0:22:28 > 0:22:30and also, because I can't hear that much,

0:22:30 > 0:22:33I have to do all of my homework before I get on set

0:22:33 > 0:22:36and make sure I know what I'm doing and why I'm saying things.

0:22:36 > 0:22:39Did the next character we're going to talk about come from you

0:22:39 > 0:22:41not being able to hear anything? Obviously Strax has got

0:22:41 > 0:22:44quite small ears, but Randal Moon over there from Wizards vs Aliens

0:22:44 > 0:22:46- has got enormous ears. - Considerably larger.

0:22:46 > 0:22:48Can you hear more through those?

0:22:48 > 0:22:52Yes, well, if we have a look at this one,

0:22:52 > 0:22:57in Randal, it's a slightly different material it's made out of, this one.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00- There he is.- In full flow there. - Pointy pointy.

0:23:00 > 0:23:04It's a thinner material in the first place,

0:23:04 > 0:23:06so it doesn't block my ears quite as much,

0:23:06 > 0:23:08but this is a very different sort of...

0:23:08 > 0:23:11It's a different design so it's got more pieces to it.

0:23:11 > 0:23:13There's a back part which has got the ears on

0:23:13 > 0:23:15and goes round the back of my head,

0:23:15 > 0:23:18and two bits that are the mask of it,

0:23:18 > 0:23:21one of which goes down to my lip, just around there,

0:23:21 > 0:23:24and you can see it down there, and then there's the actual chin,

0:23:24 > 0:23:27which is the strange kind of pink shark fin down there,

0:23:27 > 0:23:29and that goes on to mine,

0:23:29 > 0:23:32and then, also, around the back there's a bit that glues on

0:23:32 > 0:23:35to the back of my neck, to give me Randal Moon's neck.

0:23:35 > 0:23:38- It's like a face jigsaw isn't it? - Yes, absolutely.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41Does that take much longer cos it's more involved?

0:23:41 > 0:23:43No, with Strax there's more painting up,

0:23:43 > 0:23:45cos once it's on it needs to be painted to look nice.

0:23:45 > 0:23:48This is all pre-painted, but it takes about the same time -

0:23:48 > 0:23:49there's more bits to it,

0:23:49 > 0:23:51so it still takes about two and a half, three hours or so.

0:23:51 > 0:23:53What's it like when you're in the costumes?

0:23:53 > 0:23:55Obviously they look very different,

0:23:55 > 0:23:58but when you're in the costume do you feel like different characters?

0:23:58 > 0:24:01How do you find who you're going to play and how you do it?

0:24:01 > 0:24:04Yes, it does change your physicality, as well.

0:24:04 > 0:24:07Strax's costume, it's big and bulky, as you can see there,

0:24:07 > 0:24:10and it makes me stand in a certain way.

0:24:10 > 0:24:13With Randal, he's got a pointy head, pointy ears, a pointy nose,

0:24:13 > 0:24:15and he's got pointy fingers, as well.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18- AS RANDAL MOON:- He gets very excited all the time, as well,

0:24:18 > 0:24:20he'll be talking very, very high-pitched, like this.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22- AS STRAX:- And Strax is much more down there.

0:24:22 > 0:24:25- He's just always having a bad day. - He's a proper grump, isn't he?

0:24:25 > 0:24:27I love Strax, he's quite funny, as well.

0:24:27 > 0:24:30Do you get a chance to ad-lib on set and add funny lines?

0:24:30 > 0:24:32I haven't done that in the episodes,

0:24:32 > 0:24:35but all surrounding it there's lots of fun that we have.

0:24:35 > 0:24:38- Well, I'm about to have the same amount of fun.- OK.

0:24:38 > 0:24:40Apparently, the people here at Blue Peter, in charge,

0:24:40 > 0:24:42have turned me into an alien.

0:24:42 > 0:24:46Now, I genuinely haven't seen this, so can we see me as an alien?

0:24:46 > 0:24:48- Oh-ho-ho!- Oh, lovely!

0:24:48 > 0:24:50Right! Well, what do you say about that?

0:24:50 > 0:24:53- It's a bit of a space donkey.- Yeah.

0:24:53 > 0:24:55Oh, thanks.

0:24:55 > 0:24:57Yes, he's got a big nose, big ears...

0:24:57 > 0:24:59OK, So...

0:24:59 > 0:25:01It's like Elvis that's gone wrong.

0:25:01 > 0:25:04So what do I sound like then, Dan?

0:25:04 > 0:25:07Well, I think you've got quite a broad mouth

0:25:07 > 0:25:09- and I can just hear, like a donkey... - HE BRAYS

0:25:09 > 0:25:13- LOUD BRAYING VOICE:- So perhaps a voice that's down like that!

0:25:13 > 0:25:16And is very excited! See how excited he is with his eyes?

0:25:16 > 0:25:18That sounds a bit like Shaggy from Scooby-Doo, doesn't it?

0:25:18 > 0:25:20- Shall I give that a go?- Yes, go on.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22What's my name? What will I be called?

0:25:22 > 0:25:23Donko!

0:25:23 > 0:25:26Donko. Donko, the new Doctor Who alien.

0:25:26 > 0:25:28Ready for this?

0:25:28 > 0:25:29- DEEP BRAYING:- Hi, I'm Donko!

0:25:29 > 0:25:32Does that work? No? OK, not coming to a screen near you very soon.

0:25:32 > 0:25:33But the new series of Doctor Who is.

0:25:33 > 0:25:36Let's get off this as quick as we can and talk about that.
