0:00:03 > 0:00:06Coming up on today's show, we'll be looking back

0:00:06 > 0:00:08at some of the great memories from 2013 on Blue Peter.

0:00:08 > 0:00:11I'll be remembering the fear as I jump off of a pier

0:00:11 > 0:00:12into freezing cold water.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15I'll be thinking about my sore knees and my sore bottom

0:00:15 > 0:00:18as I push myself to the limit in Barney's Big Bike Challenge.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21And, for me, a standout moment in 2013 has to be

0:00:21 > 0:00:23meeting the Doctor, yes, Doctor Who.

0:00:23 > 0:00:26But all that's coming up on today's Blue Peter.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37Yay!

0:00:42 > 0:00:43CHEERING

0:00:43 > 0:00:47Hi! How are you? You're watching Blue Peter. Merry Christmas, everybody!

0:00:47 > 0:00:49We hope you got some really nice presents.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52As you can see, the Blue Peter studio is still set for Christmas

0:00:52 > 0:00:56and there are some presents. So, guess what? I'm opening one.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58No, you're not quite yet, just hang on there, Barney Harwood,

0:00:58 > 0:01:01because Blue Peter is the gift that just keeps on giving

0:01:01 > 0:01:04and we'll show you some of the best moments of the year as well as

0:01:04 > 0:01:07a few new ones, because 2013 was full of thrills, spills

0:01:07 > 0:01:08and a lot of fun.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11And I was over the moon back in July when you voted me in

0:01:11 > 0:01:12as your 36th Blue Peter presenter.

0:01:12 > 0:01:16And it only feels like yesterday, but, in October, I joined the team.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18- You did.- That feels like ages, mate!

0:01:18 > 0:01:21Now, Helen Skelton was here for five-and-a-half inspiring years,

0:01:21 > 0:01:23but she's no longer here. Sad face.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26But it was a happy face, too, because 2013 was an incredible year.

0:01:26 > 0:01:30I think it's time we had a Blue Peter whistle stop tour of 2013.

0:01:30 > 0:01:32- Definitely.- Yeah? All right, then. Are you coming?

0:01:32 > 0:01:37The one word to describe 2013 on Blue Peter has to be "challenge".

0:01:37 > 0:01:40First up, Helen and I got airborne as we attempted to pass

0:01:40 > 0:01:44a baton between us in mid-air whilst strapped to the top of aeroplanes.

0:01:44 > 0:01:48- We didn't quite manage it, but Helen was fine with that.- I'm so annoyed!

0:01:50 > 0:01:53Then I took to two wheels to learn some motorbiking tricks

0:01:53 > 0:01:54with the amazing Imps.

0:01:54 > 0:01:58Helen then undertook her toughest Blue Peter challenge to date -

0:01:58 > 0:01:59the Royal Marine yomp.

0:01:59 > 0:02:05She conquered 16 miles with just under 16kg strapped to her back

0:02:05 > 0:02:08and then speed-marched 14 more miles.

0:02:08 > 0:02:09SHE SQUEAKS

0:02:09 > 0:02:12Then it was time to challenge our new girl,

0:02:12 > 0:02:16learning 3G, a mixture of gymnastics and parkour tricks.

0:02:16 > 0:02:21We've had some fabulous famous faces like The Vamps, Lawson, McFly,

0:02:21 > 0:02:23Gary Barlow, Bridgit Mendler,

0:02:23 > 0:02:27Mr Wildlife himself, Steve Backshall, even Nicole Scherzinger.

0:02:27 > 0:02:28High tens!

0:02:28 > 0:02:31Then there was our Get Spotted campaign for Children In Need.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34We delivered spotty pizzas, had our go in the spotlight

0:02:34 > 0:02:37and ended with an epic spotty light show.

0:02:37 > 0:02:41And of course, who could forget our awesome Blue Peter Makes?

0:02:41 > 0:02:43And Blue Peter wouldn't be Blue Peter

0:02:43 > 0:02:45without a few world records being broken.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48We made bunting, smashed tiles in taekwondo,

0:02:48 > 0:02:51and Matti Hemmings span his way into the record books.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53It's been a year of change.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56Saying goodbye to Helen but gaining two fab new presenters.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Oh, and there was gunge, too.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01Here's to 2014.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03APPLAUSE

0:03:03 > 0:03:06- Let me tell you, that gunge was cold.- It was disgusting.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09And by the way, how much does Blue Peter fit into one year?

0:03:09 > 0:03:11- A lot.- It's incredible.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14I remember watching Helen and you. He's not even paying attention.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17I remember you guys attempting the mid-air baton pass.

0:03:17 > 0:03:18Great year, good year, good.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21- We've got to give it a go, Linds. - We will. Meantime...

0:03:21 > 0:03:23Have you got ants in your pants or something?

0:03:23 > 0:03:25- Yes, it's where I keep them! - Look, you can open the presents!

0:03:25 > 0:03:28This one's got my name on it. Cannot wait, love presents.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30Oh, wicked, I love these! HE HONKS

0:03:30 > 0:03:33- Whoa!- Amazing.- That's going to get annoying.- Probably will.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36Now, you don't know this, but actually, earlier in the year,

0:03:36 > 0:03:38I got to play with some really massive horns,

0:03:38 > 0:03:41because as part of a project, we were creating music

0:03:41 > 0:03:42using some boat foghorns.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45As you can imagine, they were a little bit louder then this.

0:03:45 > 0:03:46FOGHORN

0:03:46 > 0:03:47Barney?

0:03:47 > 0:03:50Sorry, I have a high-fibre diet(!)

0:03:52 > 0:03:55I've come to the Souter Lighthouse on the north-east coast of England

0:03:55 > 0:03:58to tell you about the funeral of the foghorn.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00FOGHORN BLASTS

0:04:03 > 0:04:05These things have been around for hundreds of years

0:04:05 > 0:04:08and they used to be a vital piece of equipment to warn ships

0:04:08 > 0:04:11in murky conditions when they were getting too close to the land.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13But with modern technology like GPS,

0:04:13 > 0:04:15foghorns simply aren't needed any more

0:04:15 > 0:04:18and so they've had their day, and it's time to send them off in style.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21And the person in charge of that is composer, Orlando Gough.

0:04:21 > 0:04:24FOGHORN

0:04:24 > 0:04:27Orlando has composed a piece of music to be performed

0:04:27 > 0:04:28by a brass band on shore,

0:04:28 > 0:04:31playing in time with specially-tuned ships' horns

0:04:31 > 0:04:33sounded by boats at sea.

0:04:33 > 0:04:37We can sequence the sounds of the ships' horns and play them, in fact,

0:04:37 > 0:04:41from on land, taking into account their GPS positions.

0:04:41 > 0:04:45So that, for a ship that's further away, their sound plays fractionally

0:04:45 > 0:04:48earlier, so that the sound has got time to travel to the land.

0:04:48 > 0:04:52Sound travels at around 342 metres per second,

0:04:52 > 0:04:55and, as some of the boats will be up to a kilometre away, it could make

0:04:55 > 0:04:59for a really noticeable delay in the sound reaching the shore.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02So, let's imagine for a second that I'm a ship.

0:05:02 > 0:05:04I'm a ship, too.

0:05:04 > 0:05:05And me!

0:05:05 > 0:05:06We're all ships!

0:05:06 > 0:05:09If the ships honk without timing...

0:05:09 > 0:05:10BARNEY HUMS DIFFERENT NOTES

0:05:10 > 0:05:13..the notes will arrive on shore at different times.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17To prevent this, the ships will be co-ordinated

0:05:17 > 0:05:20to play their notes to specifically timed cues.

0:05:20 > 0:05:26HE HUMS NOTES OF ASCENDING PITCH

0:05:26 > 0:05:29NOTES BLEND IN HARMONY

0:05:29 > 0:05:32I just hope the real thing sounds better than that.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34- BARNEYS:- Oi!

0:05:34 > 0:05:38So, in principle, if everything goes well, then the ships' horns can

0:05:38 > 0:05:40play in time with each other

0:05:40 > 0:05:42and also play in time with the brass band.

0:05:42 > 0:05:46But, of course, like all these technologies...

0:05:46 > 0:05:48You know, it's radio waves,

0:05:48 > 0:05:51and, well, anything can happen.

0:05:51 > 0:05:53He doesn't sound that confident but let's find out

0:05:53 > 0:05:56whether or not this ambitious project is going to work.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59It's now time for me to step aboard this trusty vessel,

0:05:59 > 0:06:01the James Cook, to help play my part

0:06:01 > 0:06:04because today, we're going to be one of the foghorns.

0:06:04 > 0:06:05Anchors aweigh,

0:06:05 > 0:06:10it's full speed ahead to take up our position near the lighthouse.

0:06:12 > 0:06:16That's the lighthouse behind us there and loads of people have turned up,

0:06:16 > 0:06:19because they're all excited about hearing this unique piece of music

0:06:19 > 0:06:22and look, even our old friends, the RNLI, are joining in today,

0:06:22 > 0:06:24which is brilliant news.

0:06:24 > 0:06:26It's not just the RNLI.

0:06:26 > 0:06:29This maritime orchestra is made up of around 60 other vessels,

0:06:29 > 0:06:34ranging from the huge to the tiny. And just about everything in between,

0:06:34 > 0:06:36each of them carrying their own foghorn.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44Back on shore, the orchestra is warming up and the audience is eager

0:06:44 > 0:06:46to hear just what this is going to sound like.

0:06:46 > 0:06:48ORCHESTRA TUNES UP

0:06:49 > 0:06:53All horn-carrying ships, press the button now, press the button now.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56So we're switched on, but because everything is controlled

0:06:56 > 0:06:59from the shore, it's hard to know when our foghorn is going to go off.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03COMBINED HORNS BLAST SHRILLY

0:07:08 > 0:07:11The good news is, it's working.

0:07:11 > 0:07:15It does just sound a little bit like noise from the boat, but to be fair,

0:07:15 > 0:07:19it's what it sounds like on the shore that counts.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22It sounds amazing when they all play together in the distance.

0:07:22 > 0:07:26It's quite haunting. It's like a scene in the movie, it's amazing.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32I've always been a big... Excuse me. HORNS BLAST

0:07:32 > 0:07:35I've always been a big fan of music for a few reasons,

0:07:35 > 0:07:38but mainly because it doesn't matter where you are in the world,

0:07:38 > 0:07:41or who you're with, music can make you feel differently.

0:07:41 > 0:07:42HORNS

0:07:42 > 0:07:45I'm freezing cold right now. I'm feeling a little seasick

0:07:45 > 0:07:47and I've got a cold, but I don't care.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50The music makes me feel differently.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52Half an hour's worth of honking later

0:07:52 > 0:07:56and, with my eardrums just about intact, the performance is over.

0:07:58 > 0:08:02What we're going to do now is go back to shore and have a listen up there.

0:08:02 > 0:08:03Are you coming?

0:08:05 > 0:08:08So, here I am. With the famous foghorn at our back

0:08:08 > 0:08:10and the wind blowing in our faces,

0:08:10 > 0:08:13we got to experience something that you don't see every day.

0:08:13 > 0:08:15Here, there's some sound equipment set up

0:08:15 > 0:08:17because when you're on the boats out at sea,

0:08:17 > 0:08:19it's very difficult to hear everything together

0:08:19 > 0:08:22as one piece of music, so this has recorded just that.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24And this is the first time I've heard it.

0:08:24 > 0:08:28Let's hear what that performance sounded like from right here.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31BRASS INSTRUMENTS PLAY BLENDED NOTE

0:08:31 > 0:08:33SHIPS' HORNS BOOM IN RESPONSE

0:08:33 > 0:08:36BRASS INSTRUMENTS PLAY BLENDED NOTE

0:08:36 > 0:08:38SHIPS' HORNS BOOM IN RESPONSE

0:08:48 > 0:08:50Wow!

0:08:53 > 0:08:54SHIP'S HORN BOOMS

0:09:01 > 0:09:03Do you know what? I'm really surprised.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06I got goose bumps when that second chord kicked in

0:09:06 > 0:09:07and that sounds absolutely amazing.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09Considering how technical today has been,

0:09:09 > 0:09:13and how many things could have gone wrong, it went absolutely perfectly.

0:09:13 > 0:09:15And it's much more than just a day out for the family

0:09:15 > 0:09:18or a chance to see this unique performance. I think that, today,

0:09:18 > 0:09:20gives the foghorn a proper sendoff.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23SONOROUS BLAST

0:09:23 > 0:09:25Do you know what? I had such a great day.

0:09:25 > 0:09:28It just goes to show you can play music on just about anything.

0:09:28 > 0:09:29It looked so fun.

0:09:29 > 0:09:322013 was a really fun and amazing year for me, mainly because of this.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37Lindsey!

0:09:37 > 0:09:39CHEERING

0:09:44 > 0:09:46- Hey.- That was such a good day.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48I think you were the happiest person on the planet.

0:09:48 > 0:09:52- Your face was a picture. In fact, let's see that again.- No!

0:09:52 > 0:09:54That's the great thing about slow-mo,

0:09:54 > 0:09:58- you thought your cheeks were going to pop off.- That's why I hate slow-mo.

0:09:58 > 0:10:01You were so happy, Lindsey. And I can make you even happier.

0:10:01 > 0:10:06- We've got a present. Barney, can you?- My turn! Right. What is it?

0:10:06 > 0:10:07It's a nice big one.

0:10:07 > 0:10:12Ha-ha! It's a seagull. I know why you've given me this.

0:10:12 > 0:10:14That is because my first Blue Peter challenge

0:10:14 > 0:10:18was at the seaside. And I was so scared, I really was,

0:10:18 > 0:10:20I didn't think I was going to be able to do it.

0:10:20 > 0:10:22But it was at Worthing on the south coast

0:10:22 > 0:10:25that my Blue Peter journey was about to begin.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27SEAGULLS SHRIEK

0:10:33 > 0:10:35Today I'm here in Worthing, where they're gearing up

0:10:35 > 0:10:38for the International Birdman Contest.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40So, that means I'm going to be jumping off of that.

0:10:40 > 0:10:44Every summer, people come here from all over the world

0:10:44 > 0:10:47with the dream of achieving human-powered flight.

0:10:47 > 0:10:51Some take the challenge very seriously, whilst for others, well,

0:10:51 > 0:10:53it's more about falling with style.

0:10:53 > 0:10:57Now, that is about ten metres high, which is seriously a big drop,

0:10:57 > 0:11:01so to practise for it, I had to do a little bit of training first.

0:11:01 > 0:11:04I've come to Southampton Diving Academy, and here to help me

0:11:04 > 0:11:06is diving coach Fran.

0:11:07 > 0:11:11Hello, Fran. So, what is the plan today?

0:11:11 > 0:11:14Well, the aim is to jump off this ten-metre board.

0:11:14 > 0:11:17- Oh, OK.- Don't worry. We're starting off down there, nice and easy first.

0:11:20 > 0:11:21Well, that was easy.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24But I've got to concentrate and keep nice and straight.

0:11:24 > 0:11:28The bigger the drop, the more I could hurt myself if I get it wrong.

0:11:28 > 0:11:30And we are going higher.

0:11:30 > 0:11:32One, two, three, go!

0:11:41 > 0:11:44Now THAT was scary. But we're not done yet.

0:11:44 > 0:11:46My heart is beating so much.

0:11:46 > 0:11:49And to make things better - or worse - for me,

0:11:49 > 0:11:53Fran's just told me that when I hit the water, I will be going at 35mph.

0:11:53 > 0:11:55But, as I get to the edge,

0:11:55 > 0:11:57suddenly my nerves start to get the better of me.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00Blue Peter told me they'd throw me in at the deep end,

0:12:00 > 0:12:02but this is ridiculous!

0:12:02 > 0:12:04- Three, two, one... - I've just got to go for it.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15Well, I did it. But there won't be a nice, warm pool

0:12:15 > 0:12:18waiting for me at the Birdman contest.

0:12:19 > 0:12:21It's the big day. The crowds are gathering

0:12:21 > 0:12:24and that platform is looking higher than ever.

0:12:24 > 0:12:28MUSIC: "Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines" Theme

0:12:28 > 0:12:30Just straight down.

0:12:33 > 0:12:35I don't know if we can do this.

0:12:35 > 0:12:38I know I've gone off a ten-metre board, I know I can do it,

0:12:38 > 0:12:43but I've just got to make myself... for 30 seconds. Oh, my God, hang on.

0:12:43 > 0:12:47- Go for it, go for it. - I'm so nervous. I am so, so scared.

0:12:59 > 0:13:01LINDSEY SCREAMS

0:13:06 > 0:13:09Amazing first Blue Peter film. What a challenge.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11I didn't think I could do it. And when I was up at the top,

0:13:11 > 0:13:15and they were counting down, ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five,

0:13:15 > 0:13:17I just thought, "Don't say one, don't say one,"

0:13:17 > 0:13:19and they said one, and I just had to run and go.

0:13:19 > 0:13:23I'm absolutely buzzing. I'm so happy. Yes!

0:13:23 > 0:13:25Such a nerve-racking challenge.

0:13:25 > 0:13:27You know what? I couldn't have done it without all the training.

0:13:27 > 0:13:29But I did do it and it was over very quickly

0:13:29 > 0:13:32compared with your long bike ride, wasn't it?

0:13:32 > 0:13:34Yes, your jump off a pier was over in a flash,

0:13:34 > 0:13:37whereas my bike challenge took a bit longer. The idea was

0:13:37 > 0:13:39basically to ride the toughest stage of the Tour of Britain.

0:13:39 > 0:13:42I had 12 weeks to get as fit as I possibly could.

0:13:42 > 0:13:45And it didn't really happen. I just fell off a lot and hurt myself.

0:13:45 > 0:13:49- No pain, no gain!- Very true, but in my case, it was more lots of pain

0:13:49 > 0:13:51and very little gain. But a good challenge. I enjoyed it.

0:13:51 > 0:13:54- We've got a present for you.- OK. - You can maybe enjoy it

0:13:54 > 0:13:56while you're watching the Big Bike Challenge video.

0:13:56 > 0:13:59OK, I think I know what this is. I recognise the weight of it

0:13:59 > 0:14:02and I can smell it as well. Yes! Kendal Mint Cake!

0:14:02 > 0:14:05This stuff is brilliant. It's great for a cyclist.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07It gives you lots of energy and it's just the thing I needed

0:14:07 > 0:14:11when I took on the mammoth Kirkstone Pass in Cumbria.

0:14:11 > 0:14:13- Can I eat it now?- Yes.

0:14:13 > 0:14:1612 weeks of training, a team of seven cyclists

0:14:16 > 0:14:18and one troublesome knee injury.

0:14:18 > 0:14:19It's race day.

0:14:22 > 0:14:25It's all become very real all of a sudden.

0:14:25 > 0:14:27- Listen up.- Oh, here we go.

0:14:27 > 0:14:29Today, I'm riding with my team.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32Jack, Becky, Caroline,

0:14:32 > 0:14:36Tom, Bill and team leader Jack.

0:14:36 > 0:14:39Three, two, one...

0:14:39 > 0:14:41CHEERING

0:14:42 > 0:14:44See you later, guys!

0:14:44 > 0:14:46The weather's still on our side as

0:14:46 > 0:14:49we loosen our legs on the ride out of Carlisle.

0:14:49 > 0:14:51The first 20 miles of our route is flat,

0:14:51 > 0:14:54so this is where we need to pedal fast, to keep to time.

0:14:54 > 0:14:56We thought things were going too well.

0:14:56 > 0:14:59The wind is quite strong, but the rain is the problem, I think.

0:14:59 > 0:15:02I'm more nervous about the rain because when it gets wet,

0:15:02 > 0:15:05the tyres get wet, the brakes get wet

0:15:05 > 0:15:07and you can't stop as well, which makes me nervous.

0:15:07 > 0:15:09'But we're not riding alone.'

0:15:09 > 0:15:12'Like any professional team, we have a whole support crew with us.

0:15:12 > 0:15:15'Our coach, Charlie, a medic,

0:15:15 > 0:15:18'a physio and a bike mechanic in case of any incident.'

0:15:18 > 0:15:21So far, so good. Done about 11 miles.

0:15:21 > 0:15:25Just stopped for a little pit stop, get some food, keep our fuel going.

0:15:25 > 0:15:29It's raining, it's windy, it's cold. It's a great day for a bike ride(!)

0:15:32 > 0:15:36As the gathering clouds pelt us with rain and we're buffeted by wind,

0:15:36 > 0:15:39riding tightly together becomes more important.

0:15:42 > 0:15:45Pace is good, knee's hurting.

0:15:48 > 0:15:52We've reached the 20-mile mark and our head start has run out.

0:15:52 > 0:15:54The Tour of Britain race has begun

0:15:54 > 0:15:57and my recurring injury has come back to haunt me.

0:15:57 > 0:15:5920 miles in and my knee's gone.

0:15:59 > 0:16:03This is where the challenge really begins. That was the warm up.

0:16:03 > 0:16:07I'm confident he's in a good place for this next hilly section.

0:16:07 > 0:16:11Even though it's painful, I can still go another 30 miles, which is

0:16:11 > 0:16:12what we're after, really.

0:16:12 > 0:16:16Kirkstone Pass, a long climb, very long climb.

0:16:16 > 0:16:21Kirkstone Pass is the big one, but, yeah, feeling good.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24I can still ride on my knee, which is good,

0:16:24 > 0:16:27as we're about to tackle the monster mountain roads.

0:16:30 > 0:16:34Kirkstone Pass. The highest mountain pass in the Lake District.

0:16:34 > 0:16:39Over 450 metres above sea level and uphill all the way.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42Otherwise known as three miles of pain.

0:16:42 > 0:16:44Not even slightly funny how bad this is going to hurt.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54- Wow, how strong is that wind?!- Very!

0:16:55 > 0:16:58This is the hardest thing I've ever done in my life.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04Come on, Barney!

0:17:11 > 0:17:14Let's go, Barney, come on! Come on!

0:17:14 > 0:17:16You're a dead man, Charlie!

0:17:16 > 0:17:19Come on, come on! Barney!

0:17:19 > 0:17:21Ride, ride, ride, come on!

0:17:25 > 0:17:27THEY CHEER

0:17:27 > 0:17:31'I can't believe I've made it to the top still in the saddle,

0:17:31 > 0:17:32'and neither can Charlie.'

0:17:32 > 0:17:34Ah!

0:17:34 > 0:17:39That is the hardest I've ever worked at anything. Oh!

0:17:39 > 0:17:41That is amazing!

0:17:41 > 0:17:44I'm so...emotional.

0:17:46 > 0:17:47Mate, I can't even speak.

0:17:53 > 0:17:54We've broken the back of our ride,

0:17:54 > 0:17:57but dropped off the pace of the Tour of Britain.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59The professionals are gaining on Team Blue Peter

0:17:59 > 0:18:01having powered through 50 miles of their route.

0:18:01 > 0:18:05If we don't push it, they might beat us to the finish line.

0:18:11 > 0:18:15On the outskirts of Kendal we get some energy-boosting moral support.

0:18:15 > 0:18:17CHEERING

0:18:17 > 0:18:20Then, as we rejoin the main Tour route

0:18:20 > 0:18:23it's clear we've made it ahead of the professional race.

0:18:25 > 0:18:27Team Blue Peter powers to the finish

0:18:27 > 0:18:30and there is someone special waiting there - my dad.

0:18:30 > 0:18:31- I'm good, you?- Yeah, good.

0:18:31 > 0:18:33Well done, mate, I'm proud of you. Fantastic.

0:18:33 > 0:18:36What a great feeling to see you on the finish line.

0:18:36 > 0:18:39After 12 weeks of really hard training,

0:18:39 > 0:18:41I've fallen off,

0:18:41 > 0:18:44I've hurt myself, I've got scars to prove it,

0:18:44 > 0:18:45I've felt like giving up,

0:18:45 > 0:18:49but with a team behind you, and just a little bit of dedication,

0:18:49 > 0:18:53and that will to succeed, you can do absolutely anything.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56Get on a bike, it'll be the best thing you do.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04And if you did get on a bike, let me know, I'll race you.

0:19:04 > 0:19:07Now, back in October our 37th presenter joined Blue Peter.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10A competitive daredevil with showbiz hair.

0:19:10 > 0:19:11Sound familiar?

0:19:11 > 0:19:13- Yes, look at that little face. - Hello.

0:19:13 > 0:19:14Were you nervous?

0:19:19 > 0:19:20You are very much welcome to the team.

0:19:20 > 0:19:23Let me show you something that's very exciting.

0:19:23 > 0:19:24It's presents. You've got one,

0:19:24 > 0:19:27and Lindsey, you've also got one. It's a belated welcome.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30- They're the same.- They look the same.- It links us quite nicely.

0:19:30 > 0:19:33- Two for one?- I've got a car, yes! - Oh, I know what this is.

0:19:33 > 0:19:34Does it remind you...

0:19:34 > 0:19:36Are you feeling a bit lost? A bit LOST, Radzi?

0:19:36 > 0:19:39It was close, it was basically a tie. What are you talking about?

0:19:39 > 0:19:40Let me explain what this is.

0:19:40 > 0:19:44Basically, Lindsey and Radzi went head-to-head in a rally car challenge

0:19:44 > 0:19:46- and it was amazing. - Yes, it really was.

0:19:46 > 0:19:48The very first day we practised on a racetrack,

0:19:48 > 0:19:50then we were head-to-head in a rally car race. It was good.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53Some of us were more natural drivers than others, weren't they?

0:19:53 > 0:19:55It was basically a tie, Linds, I wouldn't want to...

0:19:55 > 0:19:58OK, I tell you what, watch the final lap and see what you at home think.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03Today our focus is this, the Great Orme,

0:20:03 > 0:20:05where there can be very little margin for error.

0:20:05 > 0:20:10Our teacher for the day was expert rally driving instructor, Brian.

0:20:10 > 0:20:12While Brian begins by showing us how to drive the route,

0:20:12 > 0:20:18champion rally driver Elfyn Evans explains just why it's so difficult.

0:20:18 > 0:20:20It's a very twisty, very challenging road.

0:20:20 > 0:20:23You've got a big wall on one side and the rock face on the other,

0:20:23 > 0:20:25so there's absolutely no margin for error here.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28Watch the curb on the left here, see it?

0:20:28 > 0:20:29You'll get corners that tighten up

0:20:29 > 0:20:32and lead into another corner immediately.

0:20:32 > 0:20:36Don't nail the throttle till you come out the corner.

0:20:36 > 0:20:39It's all about correct lines, and taking the corners

0:20:39 > 0:20:41at the correct speed.

0:20:41 > 0:20:44- Brake, brake, brake! - Yeah, you set them a fair challenge.

0:20:45 > 0:20:47Brake, fifth gear, quickly, come on.

0:20:47 > 0:20:50Brake, fourth gear. Go on. Power, power.

0:20:55 > 0:20:56With one lap each done,

0:20:59 > 0:21:01by a whole four seconds.

0:21:01 > 0:21:03I'm hoping I can get back in the game

0:21:03 > 0:21:05when we take on our second and final lap.

0:21:05 > 0:21:08The race is on.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12Right, this will be your final run then, yeah?

0:21:14 > 0:21:17Two, one, go.

0:21:17 > 0:21:18Second gear, go.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24Dear, oh, dear. Fourth gear.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28Brake, now into third. Quickly, come on,

0:21:28 > 0:21:30brake, brake, brake, brake!

0:21:32 > 0:21:35Brake, brake. Get off the brakes,

0:21:35 > 0:21:36get off the brakes now.

0:21:41 > 0:21:42Dear, oh, dear.

0:21:42 > 0:21:44That was hard, wasn't it?

0:21:46 > 0:21:48I gave everything I had there,

0:21:48 > 0:21:50and with a time of 2 minutes and 18 seconds,

0:21:50 > 0:21:54I've racked up the fastest lap so far.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56Fair play, Radzi, you've upped your game.

0:21:56 > 0:22:00But I'm not giving up without a fight.

0:22:00 > 0:22:01Go, go, go, go. Second gear.

0:22:01 > 0:22:02Flat, flat.

0:22:02 > 0:22:04Third gear. Flat.

0:22:04 > 0:22:05Go on, go on,

0:22:05 > 0:22:07power, power, flat, flat.

0:22:08 > 0:22:12Fifth gear, flat, go on, watch the curb on the left. Brake.

0:22:13 > 0:22:15Careful. Brake.

0:22:15 > 0:22:16Down to third.

0:22:16 > 0:22:18Brake, brake,

0:22:18 > 0:22:19brake! It tightens.

0:22:21 > 0:22:23Go on, go on.

0:22:23 > 0:22:25That'll do, that'll do, well done.

0:22:25 > 0:22:26Woo!

0:22:27 > 0:22:28That felt good,

0:22:28 > 0:22:31and Brian only seemed slightly concerned by my driving.

0:22:31 > 0:22:33But was it enough?

0:22:33 > 0:22:38With a time of 2 minutes 17.94,

0:22:38 > 0:22:40the winner is Lindsey.

0:22:40 > 0:22:41Yeah!

0:22:44 > 0:22:45I've done it.

0:22:45 > 0:22:49Not the biggest of margins, less than a second, but a win is a win.

0:22:52 > 0:22:54Basically, she did you, mate. Sorry about that.

0:22:57 > 0:23:000.31 seconds, basically a tie, Linds.

0:23:00 > 0:23:02I don't know, a win is a win, like I said.

0:23:02 > 0:23:04- It's not really. - So close, yet so far.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07In 137 seconds, 0.31 seconds doesn't count.

0:23:07 > 0:23:09A draw. He's bad at timing, Brian.

0:23:09 > 0:23:11It's Christmas, let's stop fighting.

0:23:11 > 0:23:13At the end of the day, you came to do a challenge,

0:23:13 > 0:23:15you performed really well, you both enjoyed yourselves,

0:23:42 > 0:23:44who is going to answer your questions.

0:23:44 > 0:23:45Let's go and meet him.

0:25:09 > 0:25:13what scene was the most emotional or most difficult to film?

0:25:13 > 0:25:16I think one of the most emotional scenes

0:25:16 > 0:25:20was when Karen and Arthur left

0:25:20 > 0:25:21in The Angels Take Manhattan,

0:25:21 > 0:25:23and we were in a graveyard and it was just very cold,

0:25:23 > 0:25:27and it was a very difficult day's shooting.

0:25:27 > 0:25:32Please, just come back into the TARDIS.

0:25:32 > 0:25:36And it was emotional because it was Karen's last stand,

0:25:36 > 0:25:40and she's a good friend and seeing her go was sad.

0:25:40 > 0:25:41Raggedy Man...

0:25:59 > 0:26:03and I would go and hang out in a huge tree and watch some dinosaurs,

0:26:03 > 0:26:07and then I'd go and sit on one of those boats in the ocean

0:26:07 > 0:26:10and see some mad, huge, dinosaur fish,

0:26:10 > 0:26:13and then I would go and watch England win the World Cup in 1966.

0:26:13 > 0:26:14IndigoTinyParrot asks,

0:26:14 > 0:26:17what are your best tips for being an actor or actress?

0:26:17 > 0:26:22I think a good starting place, if you are a young, budding actor,

0:26:22 > 0:26:25is maybe to apply for the National Youth Theatre,

0:26:25 > 0:26:27that's a good platform,

0:26:27 > 0:26:30and they give you a good environment to practise and learn

0:26:30 > 0:26:32and be inventive and express yourself, you know.

0:26:32 > 0:26:37Read as many plays as you can, watch as many good actors as you can,

0:26:37 > 0:26:40practise as much as you can, go and make things with your friends.

0:26:40 > 0:26:42It is just practice, practice, practice.

0:26:42 > 0:26:44It's like being a great sportsman.

0:26:44 > 0:26:46The more you practise, the better you'll get.
