2:01:08 > 2:01:11These Youth Olympics exploded into life with a spectacular

2:01:11 > 2:01:15opening ceremony and it hasn't really stopped to take breath since.

2:01:15 > 2:01:19One sport that is particularly exciting at any games is gymnastics

2:01:19 > 2:01:22and here in Nanjing, there are high British hopes of medal success.

2:01:28 > 2:01:31I've come to the gymnastics stadium to meet up

2:01:31 > 2:01:34with 15-year-old artistic gymnast, Ellie Downie, to find out

2:01:34 > 2:01:37how she's settling in here in Nanjing and more importantly,

2:01:37 > 2:01:39what she wants to achieve from her Olympic debut.

2:01:46 > 2:01:48Ellie, what's it like to finally be here in Nanjing, China,

2:01:48 > 2:01:50ready for the Youth Olympic Games?

2:01:50 > 2:01:53It's been quite a long wait since I found out

2:01:53 > 2:01:56and it's really good to be here and the experience is really good.

2:01:56 > 2:01:59You came off the back of an incredible European Junior

2:01:59 > 2:02:03Championships, so how does that make you feel going into these games?

2:02:03 > 2:02:05I was quite confident but then nervous as well

2:02:05 > 2:02:07because I had a few new skills in my routine

2:02:07 > 2:02:12so that could be hit or miss and the bars, I missed a bit today.

2:02:12 > 2:02:16I'm hoping to improve on that in the all-around final.

2:02:16 > 2:02:18I know your sister is a massive inspiration

2:02:18 > 2:02:20so we thought we would show you a little something to give you

2:02:20 > 2:02:22that final push going into the competition.

2:02:22 > 2:02:26There's a few other faces you might recognise as well. Check this out.

2:02:26 > 2:02:29If she keeps going the way I imagine she should, I have no reason

2:02:29 > 2:02:32why she won't be better than me when she comes to senior.

2:02:32 > 2:02:35I have known that for a long time.

2:02:35 > 2:02:39Ellie has done remarkably well so far and if she can continue that

2:02:39 > 2:02:43and stay injury free, she's got great support from her mum and yes,

2:02:43 > 2:02:46she could be one of the best in the world.

2:02:46 > 2:02:47Who knows? Watch this space!

2:02:49 > 2:02:51ALL: Good luck, Ellie, at the Youth Olympics.

2:03:01 > 2:03:05Three bronze on the floor, beam and in the all-around final,

2:03:05 > 2:03:07and a silver in the vault.

2:03:08 > 2:03:11Team-mate Giarnni dominated the competition.

2:03:11 > 2:03:15He took two bronze medals in the high bar and parallel bars,

2:03:15 > 2:03:18and an amazing three golds on the floor, vault

2:03:18 > 2:03:20and in the all-around final.

2:03:21 > 2:03:25COMMENTATOR: It's good, in fact, it's great!

2:03:25 > 2:03:29Giarnni, congratulations, how does it feel coming off the back of what

2:03:29 > 2:03:32has been an incredibly successful Youth Olympic Games for you?

2:03:32 > 2:03:35It feels amazing.

2:03:35 > 2:03:39Knowing that I put six weeks of hard work into my training

2:03:39 > 2:03:42and now that it's all over, the competition is done,

2:03:42 > 2:03:44I've walked away with five medals

2:03:44 > 2:03:47just to go back to my gym and calm down for a bit.

2:03:47 > 2:03:49It's the best feeling in the world.

2:03:49 > 2:03:52How would you describe your style when you get out there

2:03:52 > 2:03:55and perform, what is different about you to other gymnasts?

2:03:55 > 2:03:58I just try to be cool, calm and confident.

2:03:58 > 2:04:02When I come away with a smile, I know I've done the best routine I can.

2:04:02 > 2:04:03Even if I don't get a medal,

2:04:03 > 2:04:06I'm happy with myself because I gave it 100%.

2:04:06 > 2:04:10There has been so much success recently, how do you feel

2:04:10 > 2:04:14to be part of this new wave of incredibly successful gymnasts?

2:04:14 > 2:04:16It's amazing. Since London 2012,

2:04:16 > 2:04:19British gymnastics have moved on so much.

2:04:19 > 2:04:22The boys getting bronze and now everyone from GB

2:04:22 > 2:04:25and the programme and the British Gymnastics Society is moving forwards

2:04:25 > 2:04:27and getting more medals than ever.

2:04:27 > 2:04:30Seeing as we're here at the Sports Lab, I know the competition

2:04:30 > 2:04:33has ended for you, but I thought we could try out a brand-new sport.

2:04:33 > 2:04:36- How do you feel about Wushu?- Sounds great.- Shall we give it a go?- Yes.

2:04:36 > 2:04:37Come on then!

2:04:39 > 2:04:41It might be a new sport to us

2:04:41 > 2:04:44but Wushu has been practised in China for many years.

2:04:47 > 2:04:49It was developed from traditional martial arts

2:04:49 > 2:04:52and is both an exhibition and a full contact sport, combining grace,

2:04:52 > 2:04:56strength and technology. Unbelievable!

2:04:57 > 2:05:00So, will it prove a challenge, even for a multiple gold medallist?

2:05:02 > 2:05:03It was time to find out.

2:05:08 > 2:05:13It's fair to say we aren't ready to become Wushu warriors just yet.

2:05:13 > 2:05:17- What did you make of that? - Physically and mentally frustrating.

2:05:17 > 2:05:20You're not going to be switching sports any time soon?

2:05:20 > 2:05:21Definitely not.

2:05:21 > 2:05:24Sticking to the gymnastics for Rio 2016, I like it.

2:05:24 > 2:05:26Congratulations on what has been

2:05:26 > 2:05:28a phenomenal Youth Olympic Games for you.

2:05:28 > 2:05:29Thank you.

2:05:33 > 2:05:36The Youth Olympic village, home away from home,

2:05:36 > 2:05:42to over 200 competing nations and more than 3,500 athletes,

2:05:42 > 2:05:44including of course, Team GB, who,

2:05:44 > 2:05:46after the best part of a day's travelling,

2:05:46 > 2:05:49have found themselves a long way away from home.

2:05:49 > 2:05:52Let's get a little flavour of the mood in camp.

2:05:55 > 2:06:00Good luck. Smile, look at the camera!

2:06:00 > 2:06:02- It's nice to have that kind of support, isn't it?- Brilliant.

2:06:02 > 2:06:05Treating the flag bearer right!

2:06:05 > 2:06:08On the plane coming out here, someone said, who is she?

2:06:08 > 2:06:09One of the athletes went, she's the boss.

2:06:09 > 2:06:11I thought, oh my goodness, I am.

2:06:11 > 2:06:15So, no reference to your culinary skills at all, just to clarify?

2:06:15 > 2:06:17Just to clarify, I have cooked nothing so far.

2:06:17 > 2:06:19But you know, I will give it a go!

2:06:21 > 2:06:22This is a real privilege,

2:06:22 > 2:06:27letting us into the hive of the Youth Olympic Games operation.

2:06:27 > 2:06:30- Are you going to show us around?- Yes. This is our apartment.

2:06:30 > 2:06:33- Basic!- Roomy!

2:06:33 > 2:06:37You could do what you like in here, sit ups, t'ai chi.

2:06:37 > 2:06:39What a group that you've got.

2:06:39 > 2:06:44- Diverse, multiskilled, lots of sports.- And talented actually.

2:06:44 > 2:06:4613 sports, 14 disciplines.

2:06:46 > 2:06:49Lots in ones and twos so they've had to mix and get to know each other,

2:06:49 > 2:06:52which is brilliant to see, especially at this age.

2:06:52 > 2:06:5515 to 18 years old, which is quite a span.

2:06:55 > 2:06:57A 15-year-old versus an 18-year-old,

2:06:57 > 2:07:00your life experiences have moved on a lot but they're just getting on

2:07:00 > 2:07:03and they are supporting each other and helping each other.

2:07:03 > 2:07:04Where does Jake sleep?

2:07:06 > 2:07:09- My room is just here on the left. - What a wonderful space.

2:07:09 > 2:07:13Bright white sheets, right now at least!

2:07:14 > 2:07:18It must be pretty interesting seeing a group of teenagers

2:07:18 > 2:07:21come together all at once and then just see what happens.

2:07:21 > 2:07:24What has that been like to see that develop?

2:07:24 > 2:07:26Yeah, what could possibly go wrong!

2:07:27 > 2:07:31- Very intimate with your roommate. - Very close together.

2:07:31 > 2:07:34I won't jump on it because it's probably quite fragile

2:07:34 > 2:07:38but I will just test the waters. That is like a table.

2:07:40 > 2:07:43- Not much give in that, is there?- No.

2:07:43 > 2:07:45I can see it on your face you're looking forward to this.

2:07:45 > 2:07:47We are looking forward to it and if you don't mind us

2:07:47 > 2:07:50getting in your way, we'll be with you every step of the way.

2:07:50 > 2:07:54- You're more than welcome. - Great, thanks for having us!

2:07:58 > 2:08:00This is the second Youth Olympics.

2:08:00 > 2:08:04The first was held in Singapore in 2010 and for some, it proved

2:08:04 > 2:08:08to be a springboard to success at the highest level at London 2012.

2:08:10 > 2:08:14Four years ago, Blue Peter were given unique access to Team GB.

2:08:14 > 2:08:17We're heading to Singapore for the first ever Youth Olympic Games.

2:08:17 > 2:08:22It's an Olympic Games but for 14 to 18-year-olds.

2:08:22 > 2:08:25That's why I said "we" because I'm going with them!

2:08:25 > 2:08:27Helen Skelton journeyed with the young hopefuls

2:08:27 > 2:08:31halfway around the world for the biggest competition of their lives.

2:08:31 > 2:08:35Among them Jade Jones and Sam Oldham.

2:08:35 > 2:08:38Jade fought her way to the top and earned gold in Taekwondo.

2:08:41 > 2:08:43You absolute legend!

2:08:43 > 2:08:47You're the first Brit to win the Youth Olympic gold!

2:08:47 > 2:08:50Sam earned himself silver and gold medals in the pommel horse

2:08:50 > 2:08:51and horizontal bar.

2:08:54 > 2:08:56This is an amazing stepping stone

2:08:56 > 2:08:58and hopefully I can carry on in the future.

2:09:00 > 2:09:04The games turned out to be a perfect platform for champion diver

2:09:04 > 2:09:06Tom Daley, too.

2:09:06 > 2:09:07Just two years later,

2:09:07 > 2:09:10the three young talents were again to compete on the world stage.

2:09:10 > 2:09:13This time at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

2:09:14 > 2:09:17Their experience at the Youth Olympics had prepared them well

2:09:17 > 2:09:21and all three went on to secure medals in their sports.

2:09:21 > 2:09:25Jade earned gold, Tom gained a bronze medal in the diving pool,

2:09:25 > 2:09:30and Sam secured bronze in the gymnastics team event.

2:09:30 > 2:09:32This really is a dream come true.

2:09:32 > 2:09:35We've been working so hard for so many years, it's just unbelievable.

2:09:35 > 2:09:37Absolute proof that the Youth Olympic Games

2:09:37 > 2:09:40is the perfect preparation for sporting excellence.

2:09:42 > 2:09:45It is amazing to think how quickly that Tom, Jade and Sam

2:09:45 > 2:09:48all made that jump from junior to senior competition.

2:09:48 > 2:09:50There was another youth Olympic champion who made

2:09:50 > 2:09:52a big splash in London.

2:09:52 > 2:09:54South Africa's Chad le Clos is back

2:09:54 > 2:09:57giving his tips to the next generation of swimming superstars.

2:10:02 > 2:10:04Chad won gold at the 2012 Olympics.

2:10:04 > 2:10:07He's such an inspiration to me and the whole of the GB swimmers.

2:10:07 > 2:10:09I think it will be amazing to meet him.

2:10:10 > 2:10:14It's his determination, his technique, everything,

2:10:14 > 2:10:16it's just on point.

2:10:17 > 2:10:18I'll race you down the side!

2:10:22 > 2:10:24Chad, thank you so much for being here today

2:10:24 > 2:10:26and spending some time with Team GB.

2:10:26 > 2:10:30How important is the Youth Olympics as a warm-up to the senior Olympics?

2:10:30 > 2:10:32I think the Youth Olympics is hugely important,

2:10:32 > 2:10:34especially in my preparation.

2:10:35 > 2:10:38It prepared me for things I wasn't used to.

2:10:38 > 2:10:41To come here and to be on a big stage.

2:10:41 > 2:10:43If you look at the stadium, it is quite big,

2:10:43 > 2:10:47a lot bigger than what most of the youngsters have prepared for.

2:10:47 > 2:10:51To get a bit of a taster for four years.

2:10:51 > 2:10:55The main thing for me in butterfly is, I like to focus on my hips

2:10:55 > 2:10:58and legs so that is what I practise in training a lot.

2:10:58 > 2:11:00It's all about feeling the rhythm.

2:11:00 > 2:11:02I compare butterfly to dancing, even though I'm a terrible dancer.

2:11:06 > 2:11:10I mess up my finish sometimes, I finish on a half stroke.

2:11:10 > 2:11:13In training, you have to make sure you practise putting your head

2:11:13 > 2:11:15down at the finish, that is what I've always done.

2:11:15 > 2:11:18I always make sure I finish hard at the wall, butterfly especially.

2:11:18 > 2:11:21People are dropping their hips a lot

2:11:21 > 2:11:23so you've got to work on your legs at the finish.

2:11:23 > 2:11:25It's not really your arms that finish you,

2:11:25 > 2:11:27it's your legs that come through at the end.

2:11:29 > 2:11:33COMMENTATOR: Chad le Clos has won the gold. Look what that means!

2:11:33 > 2:11:37The biggest honour for me is to wear the South African cap.

2:11:37 > 2:11:42I'm sure it's the same for you guys, to wear Spain and GB.

2:11:42 > 2:11:45It's a great feeling.

2:11:45 > 2:11:48You wear that with pride and swim for your country.

2:11:50 > 2:11:53Are you worried about any of us up and coming swimmers at Rio?

2:11:53 > 2:11:56No, I think you definitely you have to keep your eyes open.

2:11:58 > 2:12:01Four years ago, nobody knew who I was going into London

2:12:01 > 2:12:05and nobody gave me a chance of even winning a medal in the butterfly.

2:12:05 > 2:12:09There are a lot of youngsters here and around the world,

2:12:09 > 2:12:13that are looking at me and saying, I want to beat him.

2:12:13 > 2:12:16I've got to be on my game and make sure I keep practising hard

2:12:16 > 2:12:18and watching out for you guys.

2:12:18 > 2:12:21Do you have any pre-race rituals?

2:12:21 > 2:12:22I have a few.

2:12:24 > 2:12:27I always do the same ritual over and over again before a big race.

2:12:27 > 2:12:31I always have a lucky charm from my brother, he gives it to me.

2:12:31 > 2:12:33It's not something in particular,

2:12:33 > 2:12:37it's just a little something I always carry with me before I race.

2:12:37 > 2:12:40I always do the same warm-up routine.

2:12:41 > 2:12:44I usually like looking at my competitors before I swim.

2:12:44 > 2:12:46I don't know why I do that.

2:12:46 > 2:12:49Who was it that originally got you into swimming,

2:12:49 > 2:12:51- what got you into the pool? - My dad actually.

2:12:52 > 2:12:55When I was really young,

2:12:55 > 2:13:00he used to spray me with the water from the tap.

2:13:00 > 2:13:03I used to say, "Stop it, Dad!" and he used to keep spraying me.

2:13:05 > 2:13:09The first time I swam, I was really, really young.

2:13:09 > 2:13:12He actually taught me to swim so everything goes back to him.

2:13:14 > 2:13:16While Lindsey was with the swimmers, I was across town

2:13:16 > 2:13:20at the Nanjing Expo Centre, preparing to take in some Taekwondo.

2:13:25 > 2:13:29In a few moments, Abigail Stones will kick-start her Youth Olympic career.

2:13:29 > 2:13:31I can tell you as one of the favourites,

2:13:31 > 2:13:34there is a bit of nervous energy here in the arena

2:13:34 > 2:13:37but before she came out to China, Abbie got a few pointers

2:13:37 > 2:13:39from Singapore Youth Olympic gold medallist

2:13:39 > 2:13:43and Olympic Taekwondo champion, Jade Jones.

2:13:46 > 2:13:48When I went, I didn't really know what to expect

2:13:48 > 2:13:50but it's definitely like a real Olympics,

2:13:50 > 2:13:52that is what was amazing about it.

2:13:52 > 2:13:55Was there a more pressure on you than a normal competition

2:13:55 > 2:13:58and how did you deal with it?

2:13:58 > 2:14:01Yeah, before I felt pressure but when I got there,

2:14:01 > 2:14:04I just realised that, it's amazing to even get there.

2:14:04 > 2:14:07I just tried to enjoy the experience

2:14:07 > 2:14:10and realise that the pressures you're putting on yourself,

2:14:10 > 2:14:13you can only do your best because you cannot control winning

2:14:13 > 2:14:15and especially in Taekwondo,

2:14:15 > 2:14:18you can get kicked in the head in the last second or anything.

2:14:18 > 2:14:21You've just purely got to focus on your plan

2:14:21 > 2:14:22and what you can do in the ring.

2:14:23 > 2:14:25What are your hopes for the Youth Olympics?

2:14:25 > 2:14:27I want to go out there and I do want to get a medal

2:14:27 > 2:14:30but I just want to go and give it my best.

2:14:30 > 2:14:33I want to enjoy the experience and give it 100%.

2:14:43 > 2:14:48First round of three done and dusted and Abbie leads by 2-0.

2:14:48 > 2:14:49She's looking good but I will tell you,

2:14:49 > 2:14:51there is a long way to go in this semifinal.

2:15:00 > 2:15:02That round was definitely more cagey than the first.

2:15:02 > 2:15:05She's getting us nervous up here in the stands.

2:15:10 > 2:15:12Still shrieking.

2:15:12 > 2:15:15Hopefully she can turn those shrieks into points because right now,

2:15:15 > 2:15:16Abbie is trailing.

2:15:16 > 2:15:20Oh, that's not good, that is not good.

2:15:20 > 2:15:21Come on, Abbie, come on!

2:15:24 > 2:15:25Come on, Abbie.

2:15:29 > 2:15:31Oh!

2:15:35 > 2:15:38Oh, she is absolutely gutted.

2:15:38 > 2:15:40You feel for her, you really feel for her.

2:15:40 > 2:15:43She has a bronze medal but that is not what she came to China for.

2:15:43 > 2:15:45Not a bad result whatsoever

2:15:45 > 2:15:48but she knew in herself that she was going for gold.

2:15:50 > 2:15:52I just tried my best, there was nothing else I could have done.

2:15:52 > 2:15:55I was trying things but we fight the same

2:15:55 > 2:15:59so we couldn't get around each other's legs and it was just hard.

2:15:59 > 2:16:01It wasn't the result I wanted.

2:16:01 > 2:16:04What can you take away from this experience?

2:16:04 > 2:16:06The experience has been absolutely amazing.

2:16:06 > 2:16:09I will just reflect on what has happened here

2:16:09 > 2:16:13and improve on my next performance whenever that is.

2:16:16 > 2:16:19- you've done Great Britain proud as well, so well done!- Thank you.

2:16:25 > 2:16:28Most athletes here at the Youth Olympic Games have to concentrate

2:16:28 > 2:16:33on one sport but the modern pentathletes have to focus on five.

2:16:33 > 2:16:35It is hard to imagine they have time for anything else.

2:16:35 > 2:16:39I've come to meet fashionista Frankie and her team-mate, Henry.

2:16:51 > 2:16:54I'm guessing you're not into fashion, are you?

2:16:54 > 2:16:57No, I'm definitely not a fashion guy. I'm more of a science type.

2:16:57 > 2:17:01What's it like to be here in Nanjing finally, there must have been

2:17:01 > 2:17:04quite a build-up for the past few weeks and months in your head?

2:17:04 > 2:17:07I've known I've been selected for three months and since then

2:17:07 > 2:17:11it's just been training and hard work, trying not to get injured.

2:17:28 > 2:17:30- You're quite into fashion, aren't you?- Yes, I am.

2:17:30 > 2:17:38- You're about to go to Paris to study at the American Academy?- Yes.

2:17:43 > 2:17:50- Is Henry trendy or fashionable? - Yes, he's pretty trendy.

2:17:50 > 2:17:53I wear blues and whites and stuff like that

2:17:57 > 2:18:02- No, definitely go red. - You think?- That one.

2:18:02 > 2:18:04Since you've been here in Nanjing,

2:18:07 > 2:18:12It's a bit different. Different to European fashion.

2:18:12 > 2:18:17- Quite floral, colourful. - Lots of good patterns as well.

2:18:17 > 2:18:22Yes, like these sequins-y patterns,

2:18:22 > 2:18:24we don't really have that in England.

2:18:24 > 2:18:26- It's quite brave, isn't it? - Definitely.

2:18:26 > 2:18:28They are a lot braver than us.

2:18:29 > 2:18:32That's quite nice, that suits you but it would not suit me.

2:19:00 > 2:19:04and there's no socks with sandals or anything like that

2:19:04 > 2:19:06so everyone is pretty good.

2:19:06 > 2:19:08If it was up to you, if it was a gold medal

2:19:08 > 2:19:12or you could have a line at Paris Fashion Week,

2:19:12 > 2:19:15- which would you choose? - Gold medal all the way.

2:19:15 > 2:19:18Pentathlon sport is my number one.

2:19:18 > 2:19:21My passion is also fashion so if I could put them together,

2:19:21 > 2:19:24that would be great but I would go gold medal any day.
