0:17:02 > 0:17:04Isn't it fantastic, Doctor?

0:17:04 > 0:17:06Your brilliance has finally been recognised

0:17:06 > 0:17:08at the Rising Star Science Awards.

0:17:08 > 0:17:12Oh, come on, Colin. It's just a tacky award ceremony.

0:17:12 > 0:17:15Scientists pretending to be celebrities. Cheap laughs.

0:17:15 > 0:17:18But what's wrong with cheap laughs, Doctor?

0:17:18 > 0:17:20Hey, lads.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23I've booked a huge stretch limo to drop us at the red carpet later.

0:17:23 > 0:17:26- It's going to be brilliant. - Oh, not you as well.

0:17:26 > 0:17:29You can cancel that limo, Professor. I'm not going.

0:17:29 > 0:17:30What? But...

0:17:30 > 0:17:32BELL RINGS

0:17:32 > 0:17:33Positions, everybody!

0:17:33 > 0:17:36This is Brain Freeze! With...

0:17:44 > 0:17:45..the floor manager.

0:17:48 > 0:17:50Stand by!

0:17:56 > 0:17:58Hello, everybody, and welcome to Brain Freeze.

0:17:58 > 0:18:00It's time for...

0:18:02 > 0:18:03Today we're asking...

0:18:05 > 0:18:09Our sun is a star, similar to other stars in the universe,

0:18:09 > 0:18:11and it constantly produces energy.

0:18:11 > 0:18:12How does it do that?

0:18:12 > 0:18:15Well, the sun's core is like a really enormous oven,

0:18:15 > 0:18:18heated to over 15 million degrees Celsius.

0:18:18 > 0:18:22At the centre of this oven, hydrogen comes under huge pressure

0:18:22 > 0:18:24and fuses to form helium,

0:18:24 > 0:18:27creating massive amounts of energy in the process.

0:18:27 > 0:18:29We call this nuclear fusion.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31Total confusion, if you ask me.

0:18:31 > 0:18:33Anyway, we'll be right back after these.

0:18:35 > 0:18:37And we are clear!

0:18:37 > 0:18:41So, Dr Knowles, do you have your acceptance speech ready?

0:18:41 > 0:18:43I already told you, I'm not going.

0:18:43 > 0:18:47Ah, you have to go. The Science Awards are the stuff of legend.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50The glitz and the glamour, the fancy seats,

0:18:50 > 0:18:52all the lollipops you can eat.

0:18:52 > 0:18:56Professor, I became a scientist to explore new horizons,

0:18:56 > 0:18:58to change the world.

0:18:58 > 0:19:01But...they've got 42 different flavours.

0:19:01 > 0:19:05Oh! Well, I've got a science show to finish.

0:19:05 > 0:19:07BELL RINGS Oh, crumpets!

0:19:07 > 0:19:09We're back in five, four...

0:19:10 > 0:19:15- Welcome back.- The sun began life about 4.6 billion years ago

0:19:15 > 0:19:18and is currently about halfway through its life cycle.

0:19:18 > 0:19:19How on earth do we know that?

0:19:19 > 0:19:22From observing the life cycle of other stars,

0:19:22 > 0:19:25scientists predict that in about five billion years' time,

0:19:25 > 0:19:30the sun will expand greatly and become a red giant.

0:19:30 > 0:19:33After this it will continue to release energy

0:19:33 > 0:19:34by using up all its remaining fuel,

0:19:34 > 0:19:37until finally only the inner core is left,

0:19:37 > 0:19:40at which point it is known as a white dwarf.

0:19:40 > 0:19:44Giants and dwarves - that's my kind of science.

0:19:44 > 0:19:46Dr Knowles, when is the sun going to stop shining?

0:19:49 > 0:19:52We can't say for certain, but we think the sun's life cycle

0:19:52 > 0:19:55will end in about 6.5 billion years' time.

0:19:55 > 0:19:57But what will happen to us?

0:19:57 > 0:20:00The earth will have ceased to be inhabitable long before that.

0:20:00 > 0:20:02But I've got a feeling us scientists

0:20:02 > 0:20:04will have figured something out by then.

0:20:04 > 0:20:06PROFESSOR FARTS

0:20:06 > 0:20:07- Oh, sorry about that.- Professor!

0:20:07 > 0:20:09See you next time!

0:20:10 > 0:20:16- And we're clear! Hurry up, everybody, the limo is here!- What?!

0:20:16 > 0:20:20Ah, come on, Dr Knowles, there's no way we're leaving you behind.

0:20:20 > 0:20:24Oh, this is the worst day of my life.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26APPLAUSE

0:20:26 > 0:20:28Oh, this is the best day of my life!

0:20:28 > 0:20:32I want to thank my family, and my old science teacher,

0:20:32 > 0:20:35and my fantastic colleagues at Brain Freeze.

0:20:35 > 0:20:37- Hello, everybody!- Hello.

0:20:37 > 0:20:39Oh, I just love science so much!

0:20:39 > 0:20:43She's getting into it now, all right. See? I told you.

0:20:43 > 0:20:48Such a beautiful heart. Perfectly matched to her beautiful mind.

0:20:48 > 0:20:50What are you on about?

0:20:50 > 0:20:52Here, have another lollipop.
