0:00:02 > 0:00:04BELL RINGS Oh, I hate super-roller-disco day!

0:00:04 > 0:00:07Why does Ms Hucklebuck always make us do it?

0:00:07 > 0:00:11It gets easier, Dr Knowles, as long as you don't stop moving.

0:00:11 > 0:00:12Does it, though?

0:00:12 > 0:00:13Aargh!

0:00:13 > 0:00:17Hey! Good morning, Dr Kno...

0:00:17 > 0:00:19Dr Knowles? Hello?

0:00:19 > 0:00:22- Down here! - Ah, what are you doing down there?

0:00:22 > 0:00:24It's super-roller-disco day,

0:00:24 > 0:00:25not creepy-crawly-fally day.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28I just can't get the hang of these roller skates.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30Whoa!

0:00:30 > 0:00:31Oh...

0:00:31 > 0:00:32MS HUCKLEBUCK LAUGHS

0:00:32 > 0:00:35I just love roller disco!

0:00:35 > 0:00:38- BELL RINGS - We're live in five, four...

0:00:38 > 0:00:41This is Brain Freeze!

0:00:41 > 0:00:42With Dr Knowles...

0:00:44 > 0:00:45..Professor McCork...

0:00:47 > 0:00:49..Colin, the floor manager...

0:00:49 > 0:00:51and Ms Hucklebuck.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54Stand by!

0:00:54 > 0:00:56Come on, everybody!

0:00:58 > 0:01:00It's time for...

0:01:03 > 0:01:05It's more of a microscopic one, actually.

0:01:05 > 0:01:07Today, we're asking...

0:01:09 > 0:01:12Atoms are the fundamental building blocks of our universe,

0:01:12 > 0:01:15and everything you see around you is made of atoms -

0:01:15 > 0:01:18buildings, animals, water, air...

0:01:18 > 0:01:20- Whoa!- Careful...

0:01:20 > 0:01:22Atoms are unimaginably tiny,

0:01:22 > 0:01:24and contain even smaller particles

0:01:24 > 0:01:26called protons, neutrons

0:01:26 > 0:01:27and electrons.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30Depending on the number of protons in an atom,

0:01:30 > 0:01:33it takes on a different form known as a chemical element.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36So, for example, atoms with eight protons make oxygen,

0:01:36 > 0:01:3820 make calcium

0:01:38 > 0:01:39and 79 make gold.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41Hang on a sec, though -

0:01:41 > 0:01:43how are we made of those tiny little atoms?

0:01:43 > 0:01:46In nature, atoms come together to form molecules

0:01:46 > 0:01:48which form cells,

0:01:48 > 0:01:49then tissues,

0:01:49 > 0:01:53organs and, eventually, living organisms like us.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56What? That's incredible, Dr Knowles.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58Whoa! THUD

0:01:58 > 0:01:59Dr Knowles?

0:01:59 > 0:02:00Down here!

0:02:00 > 0:02:03Ha! I think it's time for a break.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06And we're clear!

0:02:06 > 0:02:08Oh, no! This is the worst part!

0:02:08 > 0:02:11It's actually not that bad, once you get moving.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14Come on, Dr Knowles - you're missing all the fun.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16CHEERS AND LAUGHTER

0:02:16 > 0:02:18I think I'm getting the hang of this...

0:02:18 > 0:02:21Yeah, yeah, I think I'm doing it.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23I'm finally skating!

0:02:23 > 0:02:24Whee!

0:02:24 > 0:02:25Positions, everyone!

0:02:25 > 0:02:26- BOTH:- Aargh!

0:02:32 > 0:02:33So tell us, Dr Knowles,

0:02:33 > 0:02:37how many of these teeny weeny little atoms are there in our bodies?

0:02:37 > 0:02:41The body of an average adult human being will contain about

0:02:41 > 0:02:447 billion, billion, billion atoms!

0:02:44 > 0:02:46That's a 7 followed by

0:02:46 > 0:02:4827 zeroes!

0:02:48 > 0:02:51Now, that's a big, big, big number!

0:02:51 > 0:02:53Tell us, Doctor, where do they all come from?

0:02:53 > 0:02:57A large number of the atoms in our bodies were made in stars.

0:02:57 > 0:02:58Wha...?

0:02:58 > 0:03:01Deep in the cores of stars, atoms are fused together,

0:03:01 > 0:03:04with lighter elements fusing to form heavier ones.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06Hydrogen is fused into helium,

0:03:06 > 0:03:09helium into carbon, and so on.

0:03:09 > 0:03:10When a star dies,

0:03:10 > 0:03:13it fires these newly-formed elements out into the universe,

0:03:13 > 0:03:17where they combine to make up all of the matter in the world around us.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19So...

0:03:19 > 0:03:22we're actually made from stars.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24Pretty amazing, right?

0:03:24 > 0:03:27I think that's the coolest thing I've ever heard, Dr Knowles.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29See you next time, folks.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31And we're clear.

0:03:31 > 0:03:35Oh, I'm glad we won't need to worry about super-roller-disco day

0:03:35 > 0:03:36for another month, Dr Knowles.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38Me too.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40I'm not sure I could take any more falls.

0:03:40 > 0:03:41How's it going, lads?

0:03:41 > 0:03:43All set for pogo-stick Sunday?

0:03:43 > 0:03:45What? Really?

0:03:45 > 0:03:46Come on, you two!

0:03:46 > 0:03:48No room for watchers here!

0:03:48 > 0:03:51Ha-ha! This is my favourite one - I love bouncing.

0:03:53 > 0:03:54- Aargh! - CRASH!

0:03:55 > 0:03:56Aargh, my leg!

0:03:56 > 0:03:58And my arm.

0:03:58 > 0:03:59And my head,

0:03:59 > 0:04:01and my bottom.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03Ouch!

0:04:03 > 0:04:05Aargh, a little help here?

0:04:05 > 0:04:06Colin, I think I broke the camera.
