0:00:27 > 0:00:29What's going on here?

0:00:29 > 0:00:32BELL RINGS Positions, everyone!

0:00:32 > 0:00:35This is Brain Freeze!

0:00:43 > 0:00:49- Stand by!- Come on, everybody!

0:00:53 > 0:00:56- BOTH: It's time for... - Today's Big Question.

0:00:56 > 0:01:00Today we're asking, "How much plastic is in the ocean?"

0:01:00 > 0:01:04Every year we produce 300 million tonnes of plastic.

0:01:04 > 0:01:08That's almost the same weight as all the people in the world combined.

0:01:08 > 0:01:13Of this, only 5% is recycled, and nearly half is used only once,

0:01:13 > 0:01:15then thrown away.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17Oh, that's awful. Where does it all go?

0:01:17 > 0:01:19A lot of it ends up in our oceans.

0:01:19 > 0:01:23Each year, plastic is estimated to kill over a million sea birds,

0:01:23 > 0:01:26and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28Bleurgh!

0:01:28 > 0:01:32If only there was another way...

0:01:32 > 0:01:34Hey, wait! See you after the break.

0:01:37 > 0:01:42Ready, McCork? Lights, camera, action.

0:01:42 > 0:01:45Do you sometimes wish you could do more for the environment?

0:01:45 > 0:01:48Sign up for Professor McCork's ten-day underpants challenge.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52Go for ten days straight without changing your drawers and

0:01:52 > 0:01:56watch your carbon footprint shrink faster than your circle of friends.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59Go on, eco-warriors, keep those pants on!

0:01:59 > 0:02:00PARP

0:02:00 > 0:02:05That's a wrap, McCork. This is going to be huge!

0:02:05 > 0:02:08Uh, I think you might be missing one crucial thing.

0:02:08 > 0:02:14- What, was my hair a mess?- No, the smell!

0:02:14 > 0:02:16Oh, dear. That's not good.

0:02:16 > 0:02:17BELL RINGS

0:02:17 > 0:02:18Positions everyone!

0:02:23 > 0:02:26I'm almost afraid to ask, Dr Knowles,

0:02:26 > 0:02:28but how much plastic is in the ocean?

0:02:28 > 0:02:33There are nearly 270,000 tonnes of plastic floating in the

0:02:33 > 0:02:37- world's oceans.- That's the same weight as 36,000 elephants.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39A lot of this plastic may never disappear,

0:02:39 > 0:02:42and will only break down into very tiny pieces called

0:02:42 > 0:02:47microplastics, which can contain toxic chemicals that may then

0:02:47 > 0:02:49- find their way into the human food chain.- Bleurgh!

0:02:49 > 0:02:51Oh, no. And what can we do about it,

0:02:51 > 0:02:54apart from not changing our undercrackers, obviously?

0:02:54 > 0:02:57Scientists are developing ways to remove some of this plastic

0:02:57 > 0:02:59from the oceans.

0:02:59 > 0:03:05But the biggest responsibility lies with us. Remember the three Rs.

0:03:05 > 0:03:10- Reduce, Reuse...- And always Recycle.- You said it, stinky.- Mm-hm.

0:03:10 > 0:03:11See you next time!

0:03:14 > 0:03:17Oh, crumpets. We've recycled everything,

0:03:17 > 0:03:19and we've still not reached our target.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22No thanks to those two and their silly campaign.

0:03:22 > 0:03:27Well, actually, it's, um, postponed.

0:03:27 > 0:03:31Couple of problems with...the science.

0:03:31 > 0:03:32Well, at least the smell has gone.

0:03:32 > 0:03:36And I can finally get rid of these fellas.

0:03:36 > 0:03:37MACHINE BURPS

0:03:37 > 0:03:40No! You can't recycle those!

0:03:40 > 0:03:41MACHINE RUMBLES

0:03:44 > 0:03:47- I guess every little does help. - We did it.

0:03:47 > 0:03:51And all thanks to McCork and his eco-pants!

0:03:53 > 0:03:55Well, I don't know about you lot,

0:03:55 > 0:03:58but I'm ready for the next challenge.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00It's not easy being green!

0:04:01 > 0:04:02The ten day underpants

0:04:02 > 0:04:04challenge is a fictional campaign

0:04:04 > 0:04:05and should not be attempted in the

0:04:05 > 0:04:06real world.

0:04:06 > 0:04:07Not changing your

0:04:07 > 0:04:09underpants for ten days is not

0:04:09 > 0:04:10a good idea and should be

0:04:10 > 0:04:11avoided at all costs.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13No underpants were harmed in the

0:04:13 > 0:04:14making of this show.
