0:39:02 > 0:39:05CBeebies Bedtime Story.
0:39:07 > 0:39:11Two spoons of sugar...
0:39:11 > 0:39:15Oh, hello! I'm Romola.
0:39:15 > 0:39:19I'm busy mixing ingredients for a special spell.
0:39:19 > 0:39:22I want to turn my ordinary black hat
0:39:22 > 0:39:26into a zingy, springy, shiny, magical hat.
0:39:26 > 0:39:28I'm not very good at magic.
0:39:28 > 0:39:32But I'm sure, if I had a colourful witch's hat,
0:39:32 > 0:39:35that I'd be brilliant at casting spells!
0:39:35 > 0:39:40Then I could be a witch's assistant and fly on a broomstick!
0:39:40 > 0:39:46Trixie, in tonight's bedtime story, is allowed to fly on a broomstick.
0:39:46 > 0:39:49That's because she's a witch's cat.
0:39:49 > 0:39:53Can you imagine flying on a broomstick?
0:39:53 > 0:39:57I'd be so happy if I could fly high in the sky!
0:39:57 > 0:40:03But sometimes even that doesn't make Trixie happy.
0:40:03 > 0:40:05Shall we find out why?
0:40:05 > 0:40:10The story is by Nick Butterworth
0:40:10 > 0:40:15and is called Trixie The Witch's Cat.
0:40:16 > 0:40:20Trixie the witch's cat was a happy cat.
0:40:20 > 0:40:23Most of the time.
0:40:23 > 0:40:29There was only one thing that could make Trixie really unhappy.
0:40:29 > 0:40:33And, luckily, it was something Trixie didn't think about.
0:40:33 > 0:40:35Most of the time.
0:40:35 > 0:40:39But then sometimes Trixie just couldn't help it.
0:40:39 > 0:40:42Trixie the happy cat
0:40:42 > 0:40:48became Trixie the very unhappy indeed cat.
0:40:48 > 0:40:51She would go into a bad mood,
0:40:51 > 0:40:55as if a dark thunder cloud had settled over her head.
0:40:55 > 0:40:59She threw things and kicked things
0:40:59 > 0:41:03and shouted all sorts of things.
0:41:03 > 0:41:09"I hate this horrible, ugly paw!" Trixie would shout.
0:41:09 > 0:41:13And if anyone ever dared to ask why,
0:41:13 > 0:41:17Trixie would only say, "Because it's ugly!
0:41:17 > 0:41:19"And it's horrible!"
0:41:19 > 0:41:25Trixie's "horrible, ugly paw" was really a very nice paw.
0:41:25 > 0:41:30It was the right size and shape and the claws worked properly.
0:41:30 > 0:41:34And it was...white,
0:41:34 > 0:41:37and that was the problem.
0:41:37 > 0:41:43Trixie knew for certain that witches' cats did not have white paws,
0:41:43 > 0:41:45because....
0:41:45 > 0:41:48Well, they just didn't!
0:41:48 > 0:41:53At last, after one really bad mood,
0:41:53 > 0:41:57thunder cloud throwing things and kicking things
0:41:57 > 0:42:00and shouting things kind of a day,
0:42:00 > 0:42:05Trixie decided that something had to be done about that paw.
0:42:05 > 0:42:07She had a plan.
0:42:07 > 0:42:13"I'm going to completely stop washing this paw," she said.
0:42:13 > 0:42:17Trixie thought that if she left it long enough
0:42:17 > 0:42:22it would go nice and black, like her other paws.
0:42:22 > 0:42:26"I'm not going to wash it for 100 years!" she said.
0:42:26 > 0:42:31At first, Trixie was pleased with her plan.
0:42:31 > 0:42:37She stopped washing her paw and it did get dirtier and dirtier,
0:42:37 > 0:42:39but it didn't go black.
0:42:39 > 0:42:43And after only three weeks of her 100 years,
0:42:43 > 0:42:50Trixie's paw began to smell really badly.
0:42:50 > 0:42:53Suddenly, Trixie had another idea.
0:42:53 > 0:42:56A brilliant idea, she thought.
0:42:56 > 0:43:03"Of course, I'm a witch's cat, I'll use magic to turn my paw black."
0:43:03 > 0:43:08First, Trixie borrowed the witch's wand and her book of spells.
0:43:08 > 0:43:13Then she got busy with a very important piece of magic.
0:43:13 > 0:43:17One pinch of black pepper,
0:43:17 > 0:43:20black hair from a cat's foot,
0:43:20 > 0:43:23two blackbird feathers,
0:43:23 > 0:43:26three buckets of soot,
0:43:26 > 0:43:3213 x two, bubble and boil in a black witchy brew.
0:43:32 > 0:43:34Suddenly...
0:43:34 > 0:43:37BOOM!
0:43:37 > 0:43:42Trixie was amazed to find that she had not been hurt.
0:43:42 > 0:43:45She could easily comb her hair
0:43:45 > 0:43:49over a little bald patch on the top of her head
0:43:49 > 0:43:52where she had lost some of her fur.
0:43:52 > 0:43:58But, as she looked into the mirror, Trixie was even more amazed.
0:43:58 > 0:44:03She was delighted to see that her white paw was black.
0:44:03 > 0:44:09"Hooray!" At last, Trixie was a proper black witch's cat,
0:44:09 > 0:44:12just like all the others.
0:44:12 > 0:44:15But...oh, dear.
0:44:15 > 0:44:22Now it was impossible to tell which one of the witches' cats was Trixie
0:44:22 > 0:44:25and which one wasn't.
0:44:25 > 0:44:29No one could say which witch's cat was which.
0:44:29 > 0:44:34Without her white paw, even Trixie wondered which one she was.
0:44:34 > 0:44:40It was then that Trixie began to miss her old, white paw.
0:44:40 > 0:44:43Her nice white paw.
0:44:43 > 0:44:46Her lovely white paw.
0:44:46 > 0:44:48She really did,
0:44:48 > 0:44:50and now it was gone.
0:44:50 > 0:44:52Forever.
0:44:52 > 0:44:55Trixie started to cry.
0:44:55 > 0:45:00As Trixie wiped away a tear with her new, black paw
0:45:00 > 0:45:04something very strange happened.
0:45:04 > 0:45:07The black began to fade.
0:45:07 > 0:45:09First to dark grey,
0:45:09 > 0:45:11then to light grey,
0:45:11 > 0:45:14then lighter and lighter
0:45:14 > 0:45:17until Trixie's paw was...
0:45:17 > 0:45:20snowy white!
0:45:20 > 0:45:24What was going on?
0:45:24 > 0:45:28Was it just that Trixie's magic was not very strong?
0:45:28 > 0:45:34Or could it be that there was some stronger magic in Trixie's tears?
0:45:34 > 0:45:39Trixie had no idea.
0:45:39 > 0:45:41She only knew that her white paw,
0:45:41 > 0:45:45which was just the right size and shape.
0:45:45 > 0:45:48Her paw with its properly working claws,
0:45:48 > 0:45:52her perfectly beautiful fluffy white paw,
0:45:52 > 0:45:55was back where it belonged.
0:45:55 > 0:46:02From that day, Trixie was happy to be just the way she was.
0:46:02 > 0:46:06And that story was called Trixie The Witch's Cat.
0:46:06 > 0:46:10Maybe I should be happy with my black hat.
0:46:10 > 0:46:15After all, that's the colour that most witches wear.
0:46:15 > 0:46:19And I probably just need to practise my spells a little more,
0:46:19 > 0:46:21then they might work.
0:46:21 > 0:46:27And while I practise, it's time for you to go to bed.
0:46:27 > 0:46:31I'll see you soon for another story.
0:46:31 > 0:46:33Night, night.
0:46:33 > 0:46:37Right...a whizz, and a whee
0:46:37 > 0:46:40and a whizzity-whee!
0:46:40 > 0:46:42Abracadabra!
