0:08:11 > 0:08:14No, I definitely answered it last time,

0:08:14 > 0:08:16now it's your turn.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18Oh, hello.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22I'm Josie. We've just heard a knock at the door

0:08:22 > 0:08:25and I don't think it's my turn to answer it.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28I definitely answered the door to let the duck in,

0:08:28 > 0:08:32so when we hear the door the next time it's your turn, Rabbit.

0:08:32 > 0:08:37There's a lot of knocking at the door in tonight's bedtime story.

0:08:37 > 0:08:43Rabbit, Duck, Lamb and Mouse all need to find out who's at the door.

0:08:43 > 0:08:47The story is by Alison Green and Deborah Allwright

0:08:47 > 0:08:50and is called The Fox In The Dark.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52Rabbit runs home, he darts left and right,

0:08:52 > 0:08:56scampering, scrambling, back through the night.

0:08:56 > 0:08:59His ears flap, his tail bobs, it's going to be tight

0:08:59 > 0:09:01as he's chased by a fox through the dark.

0:09:01 > 0:09:05Bang! goes his door and click! snaps the latch,

0:09:05 > 0:09:08thunk! goes the key and skritch! strikes a match

0:09:08 > 0:09:11and, "Phew!" Rabbit sighs,

0:09:11 > 0:09:15"I've escaped, not a scratch, and I'm safe from that fox in the dark."

0:09:15 > 0:09:19But, rat-a-tat-tat! Now, who can that be?

0:09:19 > 0:09:22"Friend or fox?" Rabbit cries,

0:09:22 > 0:09:27a voice quacks, "Look and see, you'll never find anyone more scared than me

0:09:27 > 0:09:30"of the teeth of a fox in the dark."

0:09:30 > 0:09:34Rabbit peers round the door. There's no fox, just a duck

0:09:34 > 0:09:38who says, "Please let me in, I've had so much bad luck.

0:09:38 > 0:09:41"My truck hit a ditch and got stuck in the muck

0:09:41 > 0:09:44"and I've just seen a fox in the dark."

0:09:44 > 0:09:47Rabbit grumbles a bit, it's not really his habit

0:09:47 > 0:09:50to share with a duck a bed made for a rabbit.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53"The duvet's quite small," he says, "try not to grab it,

0:09:53 > 0:09:56"while we hide from the fox in the dark."

0:09:56 > 0:10:00Then, rat-a-tat-tat! Who's that at the door?

0:10:00 > 0:10:04"It's me," squeaks a voice, "is there room for one more?

0:10:04 > 0:10:08"I don't need much space and my paws are so sore,

0:10:08 > 0:10:12"I've just run from a fox in the dark."

0:10:12 > 0:10:16"Oh, really," sighs Rabbit, "the hour is so late,"

0:10:16 > 0:10:20but the mouse stood outside in such a sad state.

0:10:20 > 0:10:24"I'm so tired," he says, "I could hibernate,

0:10:24 > 0:10:26"thanks to that fox in the dark."

0:10:26 > 0:10:31So they squoosh up together and Duck says, "Nice house."

0:10:31 > 0:10:35And, "Thank you so much for your kindness," says Mouse.

0:10:35 > 0:10:39And, "Sorry," says Rabbit, "I ought not to grouse,

0:10:39 > 0:10:42"I'm just cross with that fox in the dark."

0:10:42 > 0:10:46But then, rat-a-tat-tat! Who can that be now?

0:10:46 > 0:10:52"If it's a horse or a pig or a cow, they can just stay outside!"

0:10:52 > 0:10:54Rabbit furrows his brow.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57"I'll have words with that fox in the dark."

0:10:57 > 0:11:02Outside is a lamb who is shaking with fear.

0:11:02 > 0:11:06"Please may I come in? It looks so safe in here.

0:11:06 > 0:11:11"A big, hairy, scary thing barked in my ear

0:11:11 > 0:11:14"and I'm sure it's a fox in the dark."

0:11:14 > 0:11:18The bed is so full that it's starting to creak.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21Rabbit shoves Mouse and Mouse gives a squeak.

0:11:21 > 0:11:25Then Lamb accidentally squashes Duck's beak.

0:11:25 > 0:11:28"Oh, drat that old fox in the dark."

0:11:28 > 0:11:32Then, rat-a-tat-tat comes a knock at the door.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35"I'll get it," says Duck as he bumps to the floor.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38"Not that there's room here for anyone more."

0:11:38 > 0:11:42But outside is...a fox in the dark.

0:11:42 > 0:11:47"Don't eat us!"" cries Duck, "At least, don't eat me."

0:11:47 > 0:11:50Rabbit and Lamb dive behind the settee.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53Mouse flings up a paw and shouts, "I need a wee!"

0:11:53 > 0:11:57Then Duck says, "He looks a bit small to me."

0:11:57 > 0:12:02And the fox starts to cry and says, "Please help. You see,

0:12:02 > 0:12:05"I've lost my mum out in the dark."

0:12:05 > 0:12:09"Just what I thought," says Duck. "Ha, what a muddle."

0:12:09 > 0:12:13And Rabbit gives Fox Cub a very big cuddle.

0:12:13 > 0:12:17Then Lamb takes a cloth and cleans up Mouse's puddle.

0:12:17 > 0:12:22"He gets scared by a fox in the dark."

0:12:22 > 0:12:24Then, rat-a-tat-tat!

0:12:24 > 0:12:27"Who's that now?" Rabbit sighs.

0:12:27 > 0:12:31As he opens the door Duck says, "That was unwise."

0:12:31 > 0:12:36For outside is a fox of a much bigger size

0:12:36 > 0:12:38looming down at them out of the dark.

0:12:38 > 0:12:43But the fox cries, "My baby! I've searched for you so!"

0:12:43 > 0:12:47"And you found him," quacks Duck, "So off you both go.

0:12:47 > 0:12:49"I don't like to rush you, but as you well know,

0:12:49 > 0:12:52"a fox belongs out in the dark."

0:12:52 > 0:12:56"We won't hurt you," says Fox. "Oh, please, let us stay.

0:12:56 > 0:13:00"You've all been so kind, we'll keep out of your way.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04"My baby's so tired, our home's too far away

0:13:04 > 0:13:07"for a fox cub to trot in the dark."

0:13:07 > 0:13:11But Rabbit cries out, "There's no room in the bed!

0:13:11 > 0:13:15"Where on earth will you sleep?" Mummy Fox shakes her head.

0:13:15 > 0:13:19"Who needs a small bed? There's a big fox instead.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22"We can all snuggle up in the dark."

0:13:22 > 0:13:25So they each grab what pillows and rugs can be found,

0:13:25 > 0:13:29Fox lies out comfortably down on the ground,

0:13:29 > 0:13:31then they yawn and they stretch

0:13:31 > 0:13:34and they all cuddle round

0:13:34 > 0:13:40with the fox that came in from the dark.

0:13:40 > 0:13:44And that story was called The Fox In The Dark.

0:13:44 > 0:13:49Now, we need to make sure we open the door,

0:13:49 > 0:13:53there might be more animals outside who'd like to cuddle up on the sofa.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57But right now it's time for you to go to bed.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00I'll see you soon for another story.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03Night-night, sweet dreams.
