0:00:08 > 0:00:10Hello, I'm Emilia.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13And I was just trying to spot a robin.

0:00:13 > 0:00:15You can tell them apart from other birds,

0:00:15 > 0:00:20because they have a red chest and none of the other birds have that.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23Have you ever wondered why robins have red chests?

0:00:23 > 0:00:27I did and then I heard a story which explained everything.

0:00:27 > 0:00:29Shall I tell you about it?

0:00:29 > 0:00:33The story's called Little Robin Red Vest.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35It was the week before Christmas

0:00:35 > 0:00:38and Little Robin was getting very excited.

0:00:38 > 0:00:44He washed and ironed seven warm vests for the frosty days ahead.

0:00:44 > 0:00:48He put on his white vest and set out to skate on the pond.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51On the way he met Frog.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55"I'm so cold!" said Frog.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58"Can you help?"

0:00:58 > 0:01:01Little Robin gave Frog his white vest.

0:01:01 > 0:01:08I've got six vests left, he thought, as Frog hopped off happily.

0:01:08 > 0:01:13Six days before Christmas, Little Robin put on his green vest

0:01:13 > 0:01:16and dashed out to play in the snow.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19Down the path, came Hedgehog.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23"I'm freezing!" he said.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27Little Robin gave Hedgehog his green vest.

0:01:27 > 0:01:31I've still got five vests left, he thought,

0:01:31 > 0:01:34waving goodbye to his prickly friend.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38Five days to go before Christmas,

0:01:38 > 0:01:42Little Robin put on his pink vest and went to look for worms.

0:01:43 > 0:01:47He hadn't gone far, when Mole appeared.

0:01:47 > 0:01:54"Brr! The ground's too hard to dig and I'm chilly," he complained.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57So Little Robin gave his pink vest to Mole.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00It was a bit tight, but Mole didn't mind,

0:02:00 > 0:02:03he was nice and warm!

0:02:04 > 0:02:07Four vests left, thought Little Robin.

0:02:09 > 0:02:14Four days before Christmas, Little Robin put on his yellow vest

0:02:14 > 0:02:16and flew up to sit in the tall oak tree,

0:02:16 > 0:02:19where he met Squirrel.

0:02:19 > 0:02:23"I'm so cold I can't sleep!" Squirrel grumbled.

0:02:24 > 0:02:28Little Robin handed over his yellow vest.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32Only three vests left now, he thought,

0:02:32 > 0:02:35as Squirrel dozed off.

0:02:36 > 0:02:41Three days before Christmas, Little Robin put on his blue vest.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44He was swooping down through the clouds,

0:02:44 > 0:02:47when he saw Rabbit on the hill.

0:02:47 > 0:02:53"I'm so cold, my teeth are chattering!" shivered Rabbit.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57Little Robin gave Rabbit his blue vest.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Well, I've still got two left,

0:03:00 > 0:03:02he said to himself.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05as Rabbit went cheerfully on his way.

0:03:07 > 0:03:11Two days before Christmas, Little Robin put on his purple vest

0:03:11 > 0:03:14and skipped along the riverbank.

0:03:14 > 0:03:19Next to the river stood Otter, with her baby.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22She was very unhappy.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25"My baby is poorly," she said.

0:03:27 > 0:03:31Little Robin's purple vest was just the right size for Baby Otter

0:03:31 > 0:03:34and made him feel so much better.

0:03:36 > 0:03:40Oh dear, I've only got one vest left,

0:03:40 > 0:03:41thought Little Robin.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45On the day before Christmas,

0:03:45 > 0:03:48Little Robin put on his very last vest.

0:03:48 > 0:03:50A warm orange one.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55He'd been walking and whistling to himself for some time

0:03:55 > 0:03:59when he met a little mouse, shivering in the garden.

0:03:59 > 0:04:04Little Robin felt so sorry for her that he took off his woolly vest

0:04:04 > 0:04:08and pulled it over her chilly little ears.

0:04:08 > 0:04:13Now, it was late on Christmas Eve, the snow was falling

0:04:13 > 0:04:16and poor Little Robin had nothing warm to wear.

0:04:16 > 0:04:22There was nobody around to help him and it was a long way from home.

0:04:22 > 0:04:26He fluffed up his feathers as best he could

0:04:26 > 0:04:30and huddled miserably on a snowy roof.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33Soon, he fell asleep.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36Not even the sleigh bells woke him,

0:04:36 > 0:04:41or the crunch of snow under two heavy, black boots.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44Large hands scooped Little Robin up

0:04:44 > 0:04:48and tucked him into a soft white beard.

0:04:48 > 0:04:54"You had better come with me, my lad," chuckled a gruff, jolly voice.

0:04:54 > 0:04:59"This is the generous little fellow I told you about,"

0:04:59 > 0:05:01the man said to his wife.

0:05:01 > 0:05:07"He must have a very special present then," she replied.

0:05:07 > 0:05:11And with Little Robin snug and cosy in her lap,

0:05:11 > 0:05:13the lady set to work.

0:05:13 > 0:05:18She pulled a thread from a big, bright red coat

0:05:18 > 0:05:21and with it, she knitted a tiny vest.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25It was a perfect fit for a little bird.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28"I'm very proud of you,"

0:05:28 > 0:05:30said the man with a smile.

0:05:30 > 0:05:35"You gave away all your warm clothes to help other people.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38"You are full of the spirit of Christmas.

0:05:38 > 0:05:42"Now it's time for your present.

0:05:42 > 0:05:46"This vest is very, very special.

0:05:46 > 0:05:50"It will keep you warm forever and when other people see you,

0:05:50 > 0:05:54"it will make them feel warm too."

0:05:54 > 0:05:56It was time to go.

0:05:56 > 0:06:01Back across the skies as the sun rose to kiss the land.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05Little Robin was very happy.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08His chest glowed as red as a reindeer's nose.

0:06:08 > 0:06:13Soon Little Robin was home.

0:06:13 > 0:06:18"Merry Christmas!" cried the man as he flew off.

0:06:18 > 0:06:22"Goodbye and thank you," Little Robin shouted back.

0:06:24 > 0:06:26It was Christmas morning.

0:06:26 > 0:06:30Boys and girls everywhere were opening their presents.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33Little Robin flew to the highest branch,

0:06:33 > 0:06:36proudly wearing his new red vest

0:06:36 > 0:06:42and sang out sweetly to wish everyone a merry Christmas.

0:06:44 > 0:06:48That story was called Little Robin Red Vest

0:06:48 > 0:06:52and that's why he has a beautiful, glowing red chest.

0:06:54 > 0:06:58Well, I'm going to have another look to see if I can find a robin.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02And while I do, it's time for you to find your bed.

0:07:02 > 0:07:06Night-night and I'll see you soon for another story.
