0:18:50 > 0:18:57.
0:19:08 > 0:19:12Hello. It's the CBeebies Bedtime Hour, and I'm Ken.
0:19:12 > 0:19:16Do you know what sort of animal I'm pretending to be?
0:19:16 > 0:19:19I live somewhere that's very cold,
0:19:19 > 0:19:21where there's lots of snow and ice.
0:19:21 > 0:19:24That's right! I'm a penguin.
0:19:24 > 0:19:25I'm a big penguin.
0:19:25 > 0:19:28But tonight's story is about a little penguin.
0:19:28 > 0:19:31It's called Penguin Small.
0:19:31 > 0:19:35So come on and let's see if I can make it to the bench.
0:19:38 > 0:19:42The polar bears had been up to their nasty tricks again
0:19:42 > 0:19:45and the North Pole penguins had had enough.
0:19:45 > 0:19:47They were off to the South Pole
0:19:47 > 0:19:51to make their homes where no polar bears could bully them.
0:19:51 > 0:19:56Penguin Small watched his friends plop into the ocean and swim away.
0:19:56 > 0:19:59"Come on," they shouted, "you can do it!"
0:19:59 > 0:20:01But Penguin Small wouldn't.
0:20:01 > 0:20:02He couldn't.
0:20:02 > 0:20:05He was terrified of water. He always had been.
0:20:05 > 0:20:09Penguin Small watched until his friends disappeared
0:20:09 > 0:20:11among the bobbing waves.
0:20:11 > 0:20:14Then he put his head under his wing and cried
0:20:14 > 0:20:17until the tears made an icicle on his beak.
0:20:17 > 0:20:20After a while, he wandered off along the water's edge,
0:20:20 > 0:20:24staring down at his feet and sniffing loudly.
0:20:24 > 0:20:27And he did not see the snowman he bumped into.
0:20:27 > 0:20:31"You weren't there yesterday," said Penguin Small.
0:20:31 > 0:20:33"Did the Eskimos make you?"
0:20:33 > 0:20:37"What are Eskimos?" asked the snowman,
0:20:37 > 0:20:41who'd only been made that morning and had not learned many words.
0:20:41 > 0:20:44"And what is yesterday?" he said.
0:20:44 > 0:20:47"And what are those?"
0:20:47 > 0:20:51Penguin Small turned and gave a frightened squeak.
0:20:51 > 0:20:53The polar bears were coming!
0:20:53 > 0:20:57"Let me hide under your hat," squeaked Penguin Small.
0:20:57 > 0:21:00"What's a hat?" said the snowman.
0:21:00 > 0:21:04Without answering, Penguin Small hopped onto the snowman's arm,
0:21:04 > 0:21:07then onto his shoulder and onto his head.
0:21:07 > 0:21:11He lifted the hat and crawled under. "Shh!" he whispered.
0:21:11 > 0:21:14"SSH?" repeated the snowman loudly.
0:21:14 > 0:21:16Penguin Small reached down
0:21:16 > 0:21:20and rubbed out the snowman's mouth with his flipper.
0:21:20 > 0:21:23The polar bears were in a terrible mood.
0:21:23 > 0:21:27"Where are the penguins?" said the first.
0:21:27 > 0:21:29The snowman said nothing.
0:21:29 > 0:21:33"Where are the penguins?" growled the second.
0:21:33 > 0:21:35The snowman said nothing.
0:21:35 > 0:21:39"TELL US WHERE THEY ARE!" roared the third,
0:21:39 > 0:21:43and he began to thump the snow with his great paws.
0:21:43 > 0:21:45Still the snowman said nothing.
0:21:45 > 0:21:49Soon, all three bears were jumping up and down in a rage.
0:21:49 > 0:21:52The ice groaned and creaked under them.
0:21:52 > 0:21:56With a loud crack, the snowman broke away from the shore
0:21:56 > 0:21:59and floated away on his own little iceberg.
0:21:59 > 0:22:03"Serves you right!" roared the bears.
0:22:03 > 0:22:08They floated out to sea until the North Pole was left far behind.
0:22:08 > 0:22:11For days, the little iceberg drifted south.
0:22:11 > 0:22:14Penguin Small drew a new mouth for the snowman
0:22:14 > 0:22:18and to pass the time, he taught him all the words he knew.
0:22:18 > 0:22:21The sky grew brighter and the air warmer,
0:22:21 > 0:22:23but the snowman did not melt.
0:22:23 > 0:22:27He was made of North Pole snow and as anyone will tell you,
0:22:27 > 0:22:31the snow that falls at the North Pole never melts.
0:22:31 > 0:22:35At last, an island appeared on the horizon.
0:22:35 > 0:22:37The island was a wonderful place.
0:22:37 > 0:22:42"It's full of jungley birds," said the snowman,
0:22:42 > 0:22:44who had begun to make up words of his own.
0:22:44 > 0:22:49They'd never seen threecans before, nor heard hooter crabs,
0:22:49 > 0:22:53nor made friends with a neverwasanoceros.
0:22:53 > 0:22:56The neverwasanoceros spent his time drawing.
0:22:56 > 0:23:01There was a picture of each animal on the rocks. There were hundreds.
0:23:01 > 0:23:06"The jungle land is a wonderful place," said the snowman.
0:23:06 > 0:23:09"I want to stay here forever."
0:23:09 > 0:23:13But Penguin Small began to miss his friends.
0:23:13 > 0:23:18"If only I could swim," he said to the neverwasanoceros one day.
0:23:18 > 0:23:22"Perhaps you should fly," said the neverwasanoceros.
0:23:22 > 0:23:26"Penguins can't fly!" said Penguin Small.
0:23:26 > 0:23:30The neverwasanoceros smiled and went back to his drawing.
0:23:30 > 0:23:31He said nothing more.
0:23:31 > 0:23:35The snowman did not want Penguin Small to go,
0:23:35 > 0:23:40but he gave him his hat for a boat when the time came to say goodbye.
0:23:40 > 0:23:44A teardrop trickled from his eye and froze on his cheek
0:23:44 > 0:23:47as he pushed Penguin Small out to sea.
0:23:47 > 0:23:51Penguin Small floated out on the wide ocean.
0:23:51 > 0:23:54He did not know where he was, nor where he was going.
0:23:54 > 0:23:59The sky grew dark and big drops of rain began to fall.
0:23:59 > 0:24:02All night long, the storm blew.
0:24:02 > 0:24:06Penguin Small huddled in the bottom of the snowman's hat
0:24:06 > 0:24:08while the waves tossed it high into the air
0:24:08 > 0:24:12and sent it spinning round and round.
0:24:12 > 0:24:15By morning, the storm had passed.
0:24:15 > 0:24:21Penguin Small found himself washed up on a strange blue island.
0:24:21 > 0:24:24"This is a very odd island," he said.
0:24:24 > 0:24:30"It has no sand, no trees, and no jungley birds of any kind."
0:24:30 > 0:24:33But the island was not an island.
0:24:33 > 0:24:37It was a great big blue...
0:24:37 > 0:24:39whoosh!
0:24:39 > 0:24:44Penguin Small flew through the air, flapping his flippers furiously.
0:24:44 > 0:24:48The snowman's hat fell into the sea. The scarf fluttered after it.
0:24:48 > 0:24:51But Penguin Small stayed right where he was,
0:24:51 > 0:24:53hovering in mid air,
0:24:53 > 0:24:59squeaking at the top of his voice, "I can fly! I can fly!"
0:24:59 > 0:25:01Then suddenly his wings got tired,
0:25:01 > 0:25:06and he dropped like a floppy cushion onto the whale's nose.
0:25:06 > 0:25:11"Did you see?" he panted. "I was flying!"
0:25:11 > 0:25:14The whale was heading south to cold waters.
0:25:14 > 0:25:17He was used to travelling the oceans alone,
0:25:17 > 0:25:21but he was happy for Penguin Small to ride along with him.
0:25:21 > 0:25:23Penguin Small practised his flying,
0:25:23 > 0:25:26landing on the whale's nose when he needed a rest.
0:25:26 > 0:25:30As the days passed, he became an expert - soaring,
0:25:30 > 0:25:32diving, gliding,
0:25:32 > 0:25:34hovering, whizzing,
0:25:34 > 0:25:38but never quite managing, try as he might, to loop the loop.
0:25:38 > 0:25:42They travelled far to the south. The air became cold,
0:25:42 > 0:25:45and icebergs began to float by.
0:25:45 > 0:25:50One day, climbing high in the sky, Penguin Small spotted land,
0:25:50 > 0:25:53and looking down, he saw little shapes,
0:25:53 > 0:25:57just like himself, lined up along the shore.
0:25:57 > 0:26:00"Penguins!" he squeaked.
0:26:00 > 0:26:04Way below him, the whale launched clean out of the water.
0:26:04 > 0:26:08The whale landed in the sea with a boom like the crack of thunder.
0:26:08 > 0:26:10Then he slid beneath the waves,
0:26:10 > 0:26:14flapping goodbyes with his enormous tail.
0:26:14 > 0:26:18With a whoop of delight, Penguin Small soared into the air,
0:26:18 > 0:26:22looped the loop...well, almost...
0:26:22 > 0:26:25and pointed his beak towards home.
0:26:25 > 0:26:29That story was called Penguin Small.
0:26:29 > 0:26:33I wonder if I could fly like Penguin Small.
0:26:35 > 0:26:37No, it's no good. I'll have to waddle home.
0:26:37 > 0:26:40Night night. I'll see you soon.
