0:05:06 > 0:05:10Right, bolt goes in there. Screw that, then hammer...

0:05:10 > 0:05:11Ow!

0:05:11 > 0:05:15Oh, hello. I'm Shane. I'm just working on my latest invention.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18I've always wanted to be an inventor,

0:05:18 > 0:05:21but I've never found the perfect thing to invent.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24I tried teacups that stirred themselves,

0:05:24 > 0:05:26but they spilled the tea.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28Toothpaste that squeezed itself...

0:05:28 > 0:05:30It went all over the bathroom.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33I made a machine to help me get dressed,

0:05:33 > 0:05:36but I got socks on my hands and gloves on my feet.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39I still need to make the perfect invention.

0:05:39 > 0:05:43There are amazing inventions in tonight's story.

0:05:43 > 0:05:44They might give me ideas!

0:05:44 > 0:05:47The story's by Richard Johnson.

0:05:47 > 0:05:50It's called My Grandpa's Amazing Inventions.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52This is me with my grandpa.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56My grandpa is very old and very clever.

0:05:56 > 0:06:00At the bottom of the garden, in his dark, dusty workshop,

0:06:00 > 0:06:04he makes the most marvellous things. My grandpa is an inventor.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07One day a letter arrived for Grandpa.

0:06:07 > 0:06:08This is what it said.

0:06:08 > 0:06:10"Dear Sir,

0:06:10 > 0:06:11"You are invited to take part

0:06:11 > 0:06:16"in The World's Latest And Greatest Invention Contest

0:06:16 > 0:06:17"(Grandpa category).

0:06:17 > 0:06:19"Use your imagination.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22"Build something amazing to win the first-prize trophy."

0:06:22 > 0:06:25Grandpa scratched his head.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28"What shall I build?" he wondered. Grandma had an idea.

0:06:28 > 0:06:32"How about an amazing speaker-zoo-a-phone gizmo

0:06:32 > 0:06:35"that lets us talk with the animals?

0:06:35 > 0:06:39"Oh, imagine chatting with a giraffe! What would you ask it?"

0:06:39 > 0:06:44"Well, that's been done before," said Grandpa. "What else?"

0:06:44 > 0:06:48"I know! Build a fabulous deep-sea tentaclon," I suggested.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52"We could dive to the bottom of the ocean, gather treasure

0:06:52 > 0:06:55"and live down there as rulers of the ocean."

0:06:55 > 0:07:00"Imagine a red double-decker space-bus," Grandpa said dreamily.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03"We could catch it at the end of the road

0:07:03 > 0:07:07"and take a daytrip across the galaxy. Picnic on the moon, anyone?

0:07:07 > 0:07:09"The views aren't bad!"

0:07:09 > 0:07:11"Yeah, Grandpa! Or...

0:07:11 > 0:07:16"you could make a super-bouncy heated balloon-a-suit," I said.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18"We could bounce around the park

0:07:18 > 0:07:21"and never hurt ourselves or get cold."

0:07:21 > 0:07:26"Or you could build a multi-action digger to help me in the garden,"

0:07:26 > 0:07:28Grandma suggested.

0:07:28 > 0:07:33"I could burrow deep underground and spy on the neighbours' turnips.

0:07:33 > 0:07:34"Ha-ha-ha-ha!"

0:07:34 > 0:07:38"Or what about making a magnificent magnifying machine

0:07:38 > 0:07:41"that can make things ten times bigger?" I said.

0:07:41 > 0:07:46"You'd have to be careful where you pointed it," murmured Grandpa.

0:07:46 > 0:07:50"I could build fabulously-feathered mechanical flip-flappers,"

0:07:50 > 0:07:53Grandpa said, waving his arms about.

0:07:53 > 0:07:58"We could fly with the birds, over the tallest towers, into the clouds.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00"Up and away! Ha-ha!"

0:08:00 > 0:08:03It was getting late, when suddenly Grandpa shouted,

0:08:03 > 0:08:08"Oh! I know exactly what I'll build!"

0:08:08 > 0:08:11He rushed down the garden path to his workshop,

0:08:11 > 0:08:15where he stayed all night, hammering, banging and crashing.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17It was so noisy!

0:08:17 > 0:08:19The next morning,

0:08:19 > 0:08:23a tired Grandpa emerged from his workshop with a big grin.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26His mysterious machine was hidden under a large blanket.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30We begged him to tell us what he made, but he wouldn't.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33"It's a secret," he winked. "Wait and see."

0:08:33 > 0:08:36It was the day of the competition.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39While Grandpa made last-minute adjustments,

0:08:39 > 0:08:41I decided to explore.

0:08:41 > 0:08:45I saw a gizmo called a fancy-pant-washing wonderbot,

0:08:45 > 0:08:49a gadget called the super-duper self-soaping copter bath

0:08:49 > 0:08:51and all sorts of amazing things.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53Then it was Grandpa's turn.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55Everyone fell silent,

0:08:55 > 0:08:59as they waited for him to reveal his amazing invention.

0:08:59 > 0:09:03"Ladies and Gentlemen. A-hem!" announced Grandpa.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06"I would like to present my incredible

0:09:06 > 0:09:12"story-telling-showing-and-smelling marvellous magic machine!"

0:09:12 > 0:09:15He whisked away the blanket and flicked the switch.

0:09:15 > 0:09:19The machine whirred into action. The crowd were enthralled,

0:09:19 > 0:09:24as the machine told wonderful tales with pictures and sound effects...

0:09:24 > 0:09:26and even smells!

0:09:26 > 0:09:30Everyone clapped and cheered. "Hooray!"

0:09:30 > 0:09:35They all agreed Grandpa's invention should win the first-prize trophy.

0:09:35 > 0:09:39Later that evening, it was finally my turn to try the story machine,

0:09:39 > 0:09:42but when Grandpa switched it on,

0:09:42 > 0:09:45all that came out was a puff of smoke.

0:09:45 > 0:09:49"Crrrk! Pop! Phee-phoo! Swrzzz! Once... Brrr! Once upon a pigeon...

0:09:49 > 0:09:54"Thr... Thr... Three bananas! Wrrrzzz! Badda-badda che...

0:09:54 > 0:09:57"Cooka... Fish-fish-fishfingers. Brr-wrr! The end."

0:09:57 > 0:10:00The amazing invention was broken.

0:10:00 > 0:10:05"Ha-ha-ha-ha! Oh, dear!" said Grandpa, chuckling.

0:10:05 > 0:10:09"Never mind. I think I'd better tell you a bedtime story of my own."

0:10:09 > 0:10:13Grandpa invented a wonderful story about a girl

0:10:13 > 0:10:17who owned fabulously-feathered mechanical flip-flappers

0:10:17 > 0:10:21and flew around the world, having magical adventures.

0:10:21 > 0:10:26"Who needs a story-telling machine?" I thought drowsily, my eyes closing.

0:10:26 > 0:10:28"I've got a wonder-marvellous,

0:10:28 > 0:10:34"create-a-tastic, crinkle-wrinkle, magic-making Grandpapa! Ha-ha!"

0:10:35 > 0:10:39And that story was called My Grandpa's Amazing Inventions.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42I won't make a story-telling-showing-and-smelling

0:10:42 > 0:10:44marvellous magic machine.

0:10:44 > 0:10:47Instead, I'll come back soon and tell you another story.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50Night-night. Sweet dreams. See you soon.

0:10:50 > 0:10:55Right, let's see about making this amazing speaker-zoo-a-phone.
