0:29:06 > 0:29:10Oh, it's not quite right. It's the wrong box...

0:29:10 > 0:29:14Oh, hello. I'm Shane and I'm searching for something perfect.

0:29:14 > 0:29:18It needs to be just the right size, shape, smell, not too noisy,

0:29:18 > 0:29:21but not too quiet. You know, just perfect.

0:29:21 > 0:29:25Lucy, in tonight's Bedtime Story, wants something perfect, too.

0:29:25 > 0:29:28The story is by Tony Bradman and Holly Swain

0:29:28 > 0:29:31and is called The Perfect Baby.

0:29:31 > 0:29:36When Lucy's parents brought her new baby brother home from the hospital,

0:29:36 > 0:29:38they were very, very excited.

0:29:38 > 0:29:41Lucy, however, was not impressed.

0:29:41 > 0:29:44Baby William didn't really do all that much.

0:29:44 > 0:29:47And what he did do was rather irritating.

0:29:47 > 0:29:50He slept, he woke up and he cried,

0:29:50 > 0:29:54he was fed, he made some disgusting noises and smells,

0:29:54 > 0:29:57and then he went to sleep again.

0:29:57 > 0:30:00"Well, what do you think, Lucy?" said her parents.

0:30:00 > 0:30:06"Um, I think we should take him back to the hospital," she said.

0:30:06 > 0:30:08"Do you?" said her parents.

0:30:08 > 0:30:13Lucy could see that they looked disappointed, but they didn't argue.

0:30:13 > 0:30:16So they all got in the car and went to the hospital.

0:30:16 > 0:30:19Once there, they went to the baby department.

0:30:19 > 0:30:22"Hi, there," said a doctor. "How may I help you?"

0:30:22 > 0:30:26"Um, well, we want to return this baby," said Lucy.

0:30:26 > 0:30:31"No problem," said the doctor. "Would you like to try another?"

0:30:31 > 0:30:36"Well," said Lucy, uncertainly, "Um...eh...I don't know."

0:30:36 > 0:30:40"Oh, please, Lucy," said her parents. "Please say yes."

0:30:40 > 0:30:44Lucy sighed and gave in. "Oh, all right, then."

0:30:44 > 0:30:47The doctor grinned and gave them a tiny box.

0:30:47 > 0:30:51"See how you get on with this one," he said, and off they went.

0:30:51 > 0:30:55Once they got home, Lucy's parents opened the box.

0:30:55 > 0:30:58Inside was...a baby tortoise.

0:30:58 > 0:31:01It was certainly different from baby William.

0:31:01 > 0:31:04It didn't cry, make disgusting noises or smells.

0:31:04 > 0:31:07It poked out its little head and nibbled at some lettuce.

0:31:07 > 0:31:12Then it went to sleep. "Well, what do you think?" said her parents.

0:31:12 > 0:31:16"Well, I think we should take this one back, too," said Lucy.

0:31:16 > 0:31:20So, they all got in the car and headed to the hospital.

0:31:20 > 0:31:24"Back so soon?" said the doctor. "How may I help you this time?"

0:31:24 > 0:31:28"Um, well, we want to return this baby," said Lucy.

0:31:28 > 0:31:32"It's too boring." "Really?" said the doctor.

0:31:32 > 0:31:35"But I take it you'd like another?"

0:31:35 > 0:31:40Lucy's parents were looking at her longingly. Lucy sighed and gave in.

0:31:40 > 0:31:44"All right, then." The doctor grinned and gave them another box.

0:31:44 > 0:31:47"Third time lucky," he said, and off they went.

0:31:47 > 0:31:52As soon as they got home, Lucy's parents opened the box

0:31:52 > 0:31:54and inside was...a baby baboon.

0:31:54 > 0:31:58It was certainly different from baby William. It didn't cry,

0:31:58 > 0:32:02it screeched very loudly, it made disgusting noises and smells,

0:32:02 > 0:32:05it swung from the lampshade, it broke things.

0:32:05 > 0:32:08"What do you think?" said Lucy's parents.

0:32:08 > 0:32:13"Um, I think this one should definitely go back," said Lucy.

0:32:13 > 0:32:17So, they all got in the car and headed to the hospital.

0:32:17 > 0:32:20"You again," said the doctor. "Don't tell me -

0:32:20 > 0:32:23"you want to return the baby. What's wrong?

0:32:23 > 0:32:25"I can't believe this one was boring."

0:32:25 > 0:32:29"Um, no," said Lucy. "It was, uh, a bit too lively."

0:32:29 > 0:32:32"I see," said the doctor. "Fancy another try?"

0:32:32 > 0:32:36Lucy knew what her parents would say. She sighed and gave in.

0:32:36 > 0:32:40"Oh, all right, then." The doctor grinned and gave them a box

0:32:40 > 0:32:42that was a strange shape.

0:32:42 > 0:32:45"Fingers crossed," he said, and off they went.

0:32:45 > 0:32:50As soon as they got home, Lucy's parents opened the box and inside was

0:32:50 > 0:32:54a baby elephant. It was certainly different from baby William.

0:32:54 > 0:32:59But it wasn't right. They went to the hospital to swap it for another baby.

0:32:59 > 0:33:02That one was too long, the next one had too many legs,

0:33:02 > 0:33:05the next one was way too tall, the next one was too hairy,

0:33:05 > 0:33:08the one after that was simply far too scary!

0:33:10 > 0:33:13So they all got in the car and went to the hospital.

0:33:13 > 0:33:17"I give up," said the doctor. "Too this, too that - you're too fussy."

0:33:17 > 0:33:22Lucy's parents wailed, but Lucy was thinking all about the babies.

0:33:22 > 0:33:26One hadn't been too boring or too lively or too big or too anything.

0:33:26 > 0:33:32"Excuse me," said Lucy at last. "If we have to have a baby, um,

0:33:32 > 0:33:34"we'll take the first one again, please."

0:33:34 > 0:33:39"Oh, I don't know," said the doctor. "I'm not sure where I put him."

0:33:39 > 0:33:42Lucy frowned. "Just kidding," said the doctor,

0:33:42 > 0:33:44handing baby William over.

0:33:44 > 0:33:48"Good choice," he said. "Bye! Don't come back!"

0:33:48 > 0:33:49And off they went.

0:33:49 > 0:33:54At home, Lucy's parents were very, very excited and Lucy soon realised

0:33:54 > 0:33:58baby William wasn't as irritating as those other babies.

0:33:58 > 0:34:03He still didn't do much, but between the sleeping and the crying,

0:34:03 > 0:34:05and the disgusting noises and smells,

0:34:05 > 0:34:08sometimes baby William was...quite nice.

0:34:08 > 0:34:12"Well, what do you think?", said Lucy's parents after a while.

0:34:12 > 0:34:17"I think..." said Lucy, and her parents held their breath.

0:34:17 > 0:34:24"..he's perfect." And he was. As far as babies go, anyway.

0:34:24 > 0:34:27And that story was called The Perfect Baby.

0:34:27 > 0:34:30I don't think there's a baby in any of these boxes,

0:34:30 > 0:34:34but I'm sure there's a perfect something. While I look,

0:34:34 > 0:34:38it's time for you to go to bed. I'll see you soon for another story.

0:34:38 > 0:34:41Night night. What have I got in here?

0:34:41 > 0:34:44Oh, I've got the perfect chimp! No, his ears are too small.
