0:33:05 > 0:33:08Oh, hello! I'm Lulu.

0:33:08 > 0:33:12I was telling Mr Penguin that although I love the winter time,

0:33:12 > 0:33:17it does mean I wear extra layers of clothes to keep me warm and cosy.

0:33:17 > 0:33:20There are penguins in tonight's bedtime story,

0:33:20 > 0:33:23who are quite a long way from home.

0:33:23 > 0:33:28The story, by Penny Ives, is called Celestine And The Penguins.

0:33:28 > 0:33:31Celestine was all ready for winter.

0:33:31 > 0:33:34The garden was still bright with a few late flowers,

0:33:34 > 0:33:38and yellow leaves waving lazily from the trees.

0:33:38 > 0:33:41"Why won't you snow?" she shouted at the sky.

0:33:41 > 0:33:44"It's supposed to be cold!"

0:33:44 > 0:33:48The next day was just as warm when Celestine went out to play.

0:33:48 > 0:33:52She did her best to pretend it had snowed,

0:33:52 > 0:33:57but mud ducks and mud balls are horrible and brown, she decided.

0:33:57 > 0:34:00I'll have to make some lovely, white snow for myself.

0:34:00 > 0:34:03"Ta-da," cried Celestine,

0:34:03 > 0:34:06throwing cotton wool balls into the air.

0:34:06 > 0:34:09But each one fell straight to the ground.

0:34:09 > 0:34:13"Oh dear," she sighed. "Cotton wool is too lumpy.

0:34:13 > 0:34:15"What else can I try?

0:34:15 > 0:34:19"Hooray," sang Celestine,

0:34:19 > 0:34:22throwing handfuls of flour into the air.

0:34:22 > 0:34:25But that just made her cough. "I know," she smiled.

0:34:25 > 0:34:28"Little pieces of paper will be just right.

0:34:28 > 0:34:30"Yippee," she shouted.

0:34:30 > 0:34:33"It's snowing!"

0:34:33 > 0:34:37Just then, Celestine caught sight of something

0:34:37 > 0:34:39out of the corner of her eye.

0:34:39 > 0:34:44She stopped, and very slowly turned around.

0:34:45 > 0:34:47Behind her,

0:34:47 > 0:34:50the garden was bobbing with lots and lots

0:34:50 > 0:34:54and lots of baby penguins, all milling about.

0:34:54 > 0:34:58"Oh, my goodness," squeaked Celestine.

0:34:58 > 0:35:00"Where did you all come from?"

0:35:00 > 0:35:04"We're lost," said one little penguin.

0:35:04 > 0:35:07"A long way from home," sighed another.

0:35:07 > 0:35:11"Can we stay with you?" asked a third.

0:35:11 > 0:35:14"How did you get here?" asked Celestine.

0:35:14 > 0:35:16One penguin began to explain.

0:35:16 > 0:35:20"We come from a cold place, far away

0:35:20 > 0:35:24"and we were huddled fast asleep in our nursery," he began.

0:35:24 > 0:35:28"Our mums and dads had gone fishing for dinner when a storm began.

0:35:28 > 0:35:32"The wind blew, the sea roared, and then, crack,

0:35:32 > 0:35:35"the ice split in two and we were adrift.

0:35:35 > 0:35:38"We were carried on the waves,

0:35:38 > 0:35:43"further and further from home, up and down, up and down.

0:35:43 > 0:35:48"We called and called and as the sea got warmer and warmer,

0:35:48 > 0:35:52"our iceberg got smaller and smaller and smaller!

0:35:52 > 0:35:56"But, just in time, we landed on a little beach.

0:35:56 > 0:35:59"Straight away, we set off to look for snow.

0:35:59 > 0:36:02"We walked and walked and walked

0:36:02 > 0:36:07"and walked, until we found your lovely white garden.

0:36:07 > 0:36:12"But this isn't real snow," said one of the baby penguins sadly.

0:36:12 > 0:36:16"It's not cold and crunchy, or sparkly or slidy.

0:36:16 > 0:36:19"And now we're too hot

0:36:19 > 0:36:23"and we want to go home," wailed the littlest penguin.

0:36:23 > 0:36:28"I'm very sorry," sighed Celestine, looking at the pieces of paper.

0:36:28 > 0:36:30"I did my best."

0:36:30 > 0:36:33She sat down and thought for a moment.

0:36:33 > 0:36:35"I know what to do," she said happily.

0:36:35 > 0:36:38"I've got a brilliant idea. Come with me."

0:36:38 > 0:36:43"This is called a freezer," announced Celestine.

0:36:43 > 0:36:47"It's very cold in here. You'll like it!"

0:36:47 > 0:36:50"Careful, careful, please, no pushing.

0:36:50 > 0:36:53"There's room for everyone if I take these things out."

0:36:53 > 0:36:57But there wasn't quite. "Mmm," thought Celestine.

0:36:58 > 0:37:02Then she had another excellent idea.

0:37:02 > 0:37:06"Celestine, what are you doing?

0:37:06 > 0:37:10"I can hear you from the hall." "Nothing...

0:37:10 > 0:37:13"just playing with a few baby penguins."

0:37:13 > 0:37:15Celestine took lollies from the freezer

0:37:15 > 0:37:18and found elastic bands in a drawer.

0:37:18 > 0:37:23"Come on," she cried, "with these slippery lollies on our feet,

0:37:23 > 0:37:26"we can go ice lolly skating.

0:37:26 > 0:37:30"How about making a pea and ice slide?"

0:37:30 > 0:37:33But when Celestine looked down at the floor,

0:37:33 > 0:37:35what a mess!

0:37:35 > 0:37:38It had begun to look like green soup.

0:37:38 > 0:37:41"Mmm," thought Celestine.

0:37:41 > 0:37:46"Let's play upstairs instead. Follow me to the bathroom.

0:37:46 > 0:37:49"I've just had the best idea yet!

0:37:49 > 0:37:53"Let's make ice cream bergs," said Celestine,

0:37:53 > 0:37:56"but this time, try not to make so much mess!"

0:37:56 > 0:38:01They were having a lovely, sticky, splashy time,

0:38:01 > 0:38:03when somebody knocked at the door.

0:38:03 > 0:38:07"Who's there?" asked Celestine.

0:38:07 > 0:38:10"It's Mummy," came the reply.

0:38:10 > 0:38:12Then Mummy opened the door.

0:38:12 > 0:38:17"Celestine, what are you doing?" she shrieked.

0:38:17 > 0:38:20"I told you," explained Celestine.

0:38:20 > 0:38:23"I was playing with baby penguins

0:38:23 > 0:38:28"and Mum, they've been ever so naughty!"

0:38:28 > 0:38:31Celestine tried to explain everything.

0:38:32 > 0:38:36"I see," said Mrs Duck, when Celestine had finished.

0:38:36 > 0:38:40"Their parents must be very, very worried.

0:38:40 > 0:38:44"These little penguins need to go home, straight away."

0:38:44 > 0:38:46Mrs Duck and Celestine

0:38:46 > 0:38:49squeezed all the little penguins onto the bus

0:38:49 > 0:38:52and together they set off towards the sea.

0:38:52 > 0:38:58Down at the harbour, an explorer ship was getting ready to set sail.

0:38:58 > 0:39:02"Don't worry, Mrs Duck," the Captain promised.

0:39:02 > 0:39:06"I'll see all these baby penguins safely back home."

0:39:06 > 0:39:09"Thank you, Celestine," called the penguins

0:39:09 > 0:39:12as they jumped on board, waving goodbye with their tickets.

0:39:12 > 0:39:15"Goodbye, goodbye," called Celestine.

0:39:15 > 0:39:19As the ship chugged off towards the horizon,

0:39:19 > 0:39:22Celestine felt something soft and cold,

0:39:22 > 0:39:25tickle her cheek.

0:39:25 > 0:39:27She looked up at the sky.

0:39:28 > 0:39:31Oh! It was snowing!

0:39:31 > 0:39:34"Hooray!" she danced.

0:39:34 > 0:39:38"Tomorrow I can play in the snow all day!

0:39:38 > 0:39:41"Of course you can," smiled mum,

0:39:41 > 0:39:45"after you help me clean up all that mess."

0:39:46 > 0:39:50And that story was called Celestine And The Penguins.

0:39:50 > 0:39:54I'm so glad the penguins got home safely and it finally snowed.

0:39:54 > 0:39:57I hope you've tidied up just like Celestine

0:39:57 > 0:40:00and are nice and cosy wherever you are,

0:40:00 > 0:40:03because it's time for you to go to bed.

0:40:03 > 0:40:07I'll see you soon for another story. Night night!
