0:00:12 > 0:00:13(a red leaf)

0:00:13 > 0:00:15(and a brown leaf.)

0:00:15 > 0:00:16Oh, hello.

0:00:16 > 0:00:17I'm Kimberley.

0:00:17 > 0:00:22I'm trying to find out how many different coloured leaves there are.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25I've collected a brown one, a red one and a green one,

0:00:25 > 0:00:28but there's so many different colours.

0:00:28 > 0:00:32Ferdie finds a little brown leaf in tonight's story.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35It's by Julia Rawlinson and Tiphanie Beeke,

0:00:35 > 0:00:38and it's called Ferdie And The Falling Leaves.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40The world was changing.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43Each morning, when Ferdie bounced out of the den,

0:00:43 > 0:00:46everything seemed a little different.

0:00:46 > 0:00:50The rich green of the forest was turning to a dusty gold

0:00:50 > 0:00:54and the soft, swishing sound of summer was fading to a whisper.

0:00:54 > 0:01:00Ferdie's favourite tree was looking dull, dry and brown.

0:01:00 > 0:01:04Ferdie, visiting every day, was beginning to get worried.

0:01:05 > 0:01:08"I think my tree is ill," said Ferdie.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10"What's wrong with it?" asked Mummy.

0:01:10 > 0:01:15"Its leaves are turning brown," said Ferdie.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19"Don't worry. It's only autumn," smiled Mummy.

0:01:19 > 0:01:24Ferdie trotted back to his tree and patted the rough bark.

0:01:24 > 0:01:28"Don't worry. It's only autumn," he said.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31"You'll soon be feeling better."

0:01:31 > 0:01:33But the tree didn't get better.

0:01:33 > 0:01:37Day by day, it got browner still.

0:01:37 > 0:01:42One day, as Ferdie sat under the tree, the wind began to blow.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46A small, brown leaf blew off the tree and drifted towards the ground.

0:01:46 > 0:01:51Ferdie jumped up and caught it very gently in his paw.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54"Don't worry, Tree, I've got your leaf.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57"You'll soon be fixed," said Ferdie.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00He looked around, scratched his head

0:02:00 > 0:02:02and picked a piece of grass.

0:02:02 > 0:02:08He carefully tied the leaf to its branch and sat happily down.

0:02:08 > 0:02:12Just then, another gust of wind ruffled Ferdie's fur.

0:02:12 > 0:02:16The little leaf shook itself free and fluttered back to the ground.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20Ferdie picked it up again and thought very hard.

0:02:20 > 0:02:25Then, he poked the leaf onto a twig and pushed it firmly down.

0:02:25 > 0:02:30"Now, you hold on tight," said Ferdie, sternly.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32"No more flying around."

0:02:32 > 0:02:36The little leaf gave a tiny rustle, in reply.

0:02:36 > 0:02:37RUSTLING

0:02:37 > 0:02:41The next day, a strong wind was blowing through the forest.

0:02:41 > 0:02:45Ferdie rushed out of the den and ran all the way to his tree.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48Lots of its branches were brown and bare

0:02:48 > 0:02:51and little lost leaves whirled everywhere.

0:02:51 > 0:02:52WIND GUSTS

0:02:52 > 0:02:55"Don't worry, Tree," he called, in alarm.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58"I'll catch them for you, I promise."

0:02:58 > 0:03:01Round and round and round whirled Ferdie

0:03:01 > 0:03:03after the twirling leaves.

0:03:03 > 0:03:08"Leaves? Wonderful! Just what I need for my nest,"

0:03:08 > 0:03:10said a squirrel, scampering up.

0:03:10 > 0:03:14"But these belong to the tree," said Ferdie.

0:03:14 > 0:03:16"Don't take these away."

0:03:16 > 0:03:20"The tree doesn't need them any more," said the squirrel,

0:03:20 > 0:03:23and off he bounded. "Help! Help!

0:03:23 > 0:03:26"The wind and the squirrel are stealing our leaves!"

0:03:26 > 0:03:28cried a frantic Ferdie.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30"Leaves? Marvellous!

0:03:30 > 0:03:35"Just what I need to keep warm," said a hedgehog, rolling around.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38"But these belong to the tree," said Ferdie,

0:03:38 > 0:03:41plucking leaves from the hedgehog's prickles.

0:03:41 > 0:03:44"Not any more," snuffled the hedgehog, and away he rolled.

0:03:44 > 0:03:49"Help! The wind and the squirrel and the hedgehog are stealing

0:03:49 > 0:03:51"our leaves!" cried a frenzied Ferdie.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55This time, a flock of friendly birds swooped down,

0:03:55 > 0:03:56picked the leaves up in their beaks

0:03:56 > 0:03:59and poked them onto the tree's branches.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02Soon, the tree was leafy again

0:04:02 > 0:04:05and Ferdie flopped down and smiled.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08"Thank you, thank you, birds!" he gasped,

0:04:08 > 0:04:11as the birds fluttered and chirruped away.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14He lay looking up through the leaves at the sky,

0:04:14 > 0:04:16and drifted off to sleep.

0:04:16 > 0:04:22But still the wind continued to blow, and still the branches danced.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24The leaves shivered and shook themselves

0:04:24 > 0:04:26and began to wiggle free.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29They tossed and turned and twitched and twirled

0:04:29 > 0:04:31and tumbled to the ground.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33They brushed Ferdie's ears and nose,

0:04:33 > 0:04:37and filled his dreams with a whispering sound.

0:04:37 > 0:04:42When Ferdie finally blinked awake, he couldn't believe his eyes!

0:04:42 > 0:04:44Instead of a roof of dancing leaves...

0:04:44 > 0:04:47he could see bare branches against the sky.

0:04:48 > 0:04:54"Oh, Tree. I'm so sorry," gulped Ferdie.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56"All your leaves are gone."

0:04:56 > 0:05:00But then... he saw high in the branches

0:05:00 > 0:05:03one small leaf holding on.

0:05:03 > 0:05:07"I won't let the wind steal that one," said Ferdie,

0:05:07 > 0:05:09and he began to climb.

0:05:09 > 0:05:14He wriggled along to the last leaf, and held it firmly onto its branch.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18All day long, the wind blew, the branch bounced,

0:05:18 > 0:05:20and Ferdie held tight.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23"I'll stay with you, Leaf," he gasped.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25"Don't worry that all your friends have gone."

0:05:25 > 0:05:28But then, with a sudden whoosh of wind,

0:05:28 > 0:05:30the branch bounced high.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33With a whispered "Plip!"

0:05:33 > 0:05:37the leaf let go and fluttered like a little flag

0:05:37 > 0:05:39clutched in Ferdie's paw.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42Ferdie looked sadly at the leaf -

0:05:42 > 0:05:46the tree's last leaf he'd promised to save.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49He carried it carefully down the tree,

0:05:49 > 0:05:51and all the way back to the den.

0:05:51 > 0:05:56He made it a cosy little bed, and gently tucked it in for the night,

0:05:56 > 0:05:59but all night long he could only think of his tree...

0:05:59 > 0:06:01all on its own.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05At first light, he tiptoed into the chilly dawn.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08The wind had finally stopped blowing,

0:06:08 > 0:06:10and the air was damp and cold.

0:06:10 > 0:06:15The moon still hung in the clear sky, and pale stars glimmered.

0:06:15 > 0:06:16OWL HOOTS

0:06:16 > 0:06:19As he came to his favourite tree,

0:06:19 > 0:06:22Ferdie saw a magical sight.

0:06:22 > 0:06:26The tree was hung with a thousand icicles,

0:06:26 > 0:06:29shining silver in the early light.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31"You are more beautiful than ever,"

0:06:31 > 0:06:35whispered Ferdie to the tree made of ice.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37"Can the squirrel and the hedgehog keep your leaves

0:06:37 > 0:06:40"for the cold winter nights?"

0:06:40 > 0:06:42A tiny breeze shivered the branches,

0:06:42 > 0:06:44making a sound like laughter.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47And in the light of the rising sun,

0:06:47 > 0:06:50the sparkly branches nodded.

0:06:51 > 0:06:55And that story was called Ferdie And The Falling Leaves.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57Are you all nice and cosy and ready for bed now,

0:06:57 > 0:06:59like Ferdie was in his den?

0:07:00 > 0:07:03Good, because it's time for you all to go to sleep...

0:07:03 > 0:07:06and I'll see you soon for another story.

0:07:06 > 0:07:08Night-night.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10(Now, I wonder what other colours we can find...)
