0:14:50 > 0:14:57.
0:15:07 > 0:15:11Now then, how many guests are coming?
0:15:14 > 0:15:20Oh, hello. I'm Sue. I'm getting ready for a party, a surprise party.
0:15:20 > 0:15:22Look, I've decorated the room.
0:15:22 > 0:15:27There's party plates, party cups AND a cake.
0:15:27 > 0:15:32I think Mr Bear in tonight's bedtime story would like this cake.
0:15:32 > 0:15:39The story is by Debi Gliori and it's called Mr Bear's Birthday.
0:15:39 > 0:15:44"Happy birthday, Daddy!" said Small Bear, "Are you very old?"
0:15:44 > 0:15:47"Not very," said Mr Bear.
0:15:47 > 0:15:52"Will you have thousands of candles on your cake?" asked Small Bear.
0:15:52 > 0:15:55"Not thousands," said Mr Bear, heading downstairs,
0:15:55 > 0:15:58"Just a few hundred."
0:15:58 > 0:16:02In the kitchen, Mrs Bear was busy feeding Baby Bear.
0:16:02 > 0:16:05"Happy birthday, dear," she sighed.
0:16:05 > 0:16:10"I haven't baked you a cake because we've run out of flour."
0:16:10 > 0:16:14"I'll go and get some right away now," said Mr Bear.
0:16:14 > 0:16:16"I love birthday cake."
0:16:16 > 0:16:19"I'll come with you," said Small Bear,
0:16:19 > 0:16:21following Mr Bear out of the door.
0:16:21 > 0:16:24"Haven't you had any birthday cards yet?"
0:16:24 > 0:16:28"Not yet," said Mr Bear, but maybe the postman will bring me some.
0:16:28 > 0:16:34Oh, poor Mr Bear. Mr Rabbit Bun had nothing exciting in his mailbag.
0:16:34 > 0:16:39"Never mind," said Mr Bear, "It's a lovely day for a birthday.
0:16:39 > 0:16:42"Who needs birthday cards?"
0:16:42 > 0:16:45No sooner were the words out of Mr Bear's mouth,
0:16:45 > 0:16:49than the sky turned grey and it began to rain.
0:16:49 > 0:16:53Mr Bear lifted Small Bear onto his shoulders and ran for cover.
0:16:55 > 0:16:57Inside the flour mill they found Mr Grizzle Bear
0:16:57 > 0:17:00frowning over a little bit of bent metal.
0:17:00 > 0:17:04"It's not my lucky day today," he said.
0:17:04 > 0:17:08"I'm afraid the mill isn't working because the cog is broken."
0:17:09 > 0:17:12"It's Daddy's birthday today," said Small Bear.
0:17:12 > 0:17:15"We need flour for his cake."
0:17:15 > 0:17:19"I need a cog for my windmill," said Mr Grizzle Bear,
0:17:19 > 0:17:23"otherwise I won't be able to grind any flour."
0:17:23 > 0:17:26"I need a birthday cake," said Mr Bear.
0:17:26 > 0:17:30"I'll go and get you a cog straightaway."
0:17:30 > 0:17:33"Oh, poor Daddy," yawned Small Bear.
0:17:33 > 0:17:38"No cake, no birthday cards, no flour."
0:17:38 > 0:17:40"No problem," said Mr Bear.
0:17:40 > 0:17:43"Mr Hootoowit will have a cog in his tool shop
0:17:43 > 0:17:47"and then Mr Grizzle Bear will be able to fix his windmill
0:17:47 > 0:17:51"and we'll be able to grind some flour and before we know it,
0:17:51 > 0:17:55"we'll be eating your mummy's wonderful birthday cake. Mmm!"
0:17:55 > 0:18:02"Are we there yet?" yawned Small Bear. "I'm hungry."
0:18:02 > 0:18:06It was a long way to Mr Hootoowit's tool shop,
0:18:06 > 0:18:11but before they got there, they could hear Mr Hootoowit shouting.
0:18:11 > 0:18:19"Stop thief, that's mine, not yours. Put it back, you thieving magpie!"
0:18:19 > 0:18:23Inside the tool shop, Mr Bear groaned.
0:18:23 > 0:18:28"Oh-h! Was that the only one you had?"
0:18:28 > 0:18:33"The very last cog," Mr Hootoowit sighed.
0:18:33 > 0:18:37"Was it for anything special?"
0:18:37 > 0:18:39Mr Bear shook his head.
0:18:39 > 0:18:43He was looking outside at the faraway trees where the magpie lived.
0:18:43 > 0:18:47"We have to go there," he said, "otherwise there'll be no cake."
0:18:47 > 0:18:52So Mr Bear and Small Bear set off to find the magpie.
0:18:52 > 0:18:54It was a long way.
0:18:54 > 0:18:58First Mr Bear and Small Bear had to cross the boggy marsh,
0:18:58 > 0:19:02then they had to clamber up to the top of the rocky ridge,
0:19:02 > 0:19:04and down the other side.
0:19:04 > 0:19:08Finally, they had to pick a path through the dark woods
0:19:08 > 0:19:12till they came to where the magpie lived.
0:19:12 > 0:19:15The bird was tidying his nest.
0:19:15 > 0:19:19"What do you want?" he cawed. "Can't you see I'm busy?"
0:19:19 > 0:19:24"See that boring bit of metal you've just found," said Mr Bear,
0:19:24 > 0:19:28"the dull and unimportant little cog."
0:19:28 > 0:19:32"What about it?" scolded the magpie. "What will you give me for it?"
0:19:32 > 0:19:36Mr Bear nearly groaned out loud. He hadn't thought to bring any money.
0:19:36 > 0:19:41"Come on," said the magpie, "I want shiny, sparkly stuff."
0:19:41 > 0:19:45"Look," said Small Bear, holding out her tinsel crown.
0:19:45 > 0:19:52"Will this do?" The magpie's eyes grew wide. "I'll say!" he shrieked.
0:19:52 > 0:19:57"Here, swap you!" And dropping the cog to the ground, he swooped down
0:19:57 > 0:20:00and plucked Small Bear's crown out of her hands
0:20:00 > 0:20:04and flew off cackling delightedly. SHE CACKLES
0:20:04 > 0:20:10"Well done," said Mr Bear. "Hurrah for Small Bear."
0:20:10 > 0:20:14And back they went to the mill with the cog for Mr Grizzle Bear.
0:20:14 > 0:20:18Through the dark woods, up and down the rocky ridge.
0:20:18 > 0:20:19Back through the swamp
0:20:19 > 0:20:24and finally just as the first stars were coming out,
0:20:24 > 0:20:31back to the mill where all was still, silent and closed for the night.
0:20:31 > 0:20:37"Oh, no!" wailed Small Bear, and she began to cry.
0:20:37 > 0:20:42"Never mind," said Mr Bear, minding very much indeed.
0:20:42 > 0:20:48"Let's go home and see what Mummy's made for birthday supper, shall we?"
0:20:48 > 0:20:52But when they reached home, the lights were off
0:20:52 > 0:20:55and the house was in darkness.
0:20:55 > 0:21:01"Oh, no!" groaned Mr Bear, close to tears as he opened the front door.
0:21:01 > 0:21:06"This is the worst birthday of my whole..."
0:21:06 > 0:21:09ALL: "Surprise!"
0:21:09 > 0:21:13Happy birthday, Mr Bear!
0:21:13 > 0:21:17That story was called Mr Bear's birthday. What a nice surprise.
0:21:17 > 0:21:21Hope my party's as big a surprise as Mr Bear's was.
0:21:21 > 0:21:25But I haven't put any candles on the cake! I need to find those.
0:21:25 > 0:21:28And while I do, it's time for you to go to bed.
0:21:28 > 0:21:31I'll see you soon for another story. Good night.
0:21:31 > 0:21:35Now, where are those candles?
