0:00:06 > 0:00:08I wonder what's in this one.
0:00:08 > 0:00:12But if I open it, that'll mean no more surprises.
0:00:12 > 0:00:16Hello! Merry Christmas! I'm Lulu.
0:00:16 > 0:00:18Have you had a fantastic Christmas Day?
0:00:18 > 0:00:20You have!
0:00:20 > 0:00:23Have you played games and had lots of fun?
0:00:23 > 0:00:26And have you eaten far too much? I know I have.
0:00:26 > 0:00:30But I've had a great time with all my family and friends
0:00:30 > 0:00:33enjoying Christmas time together.
0:00:33 > 0:00:37That's what the animals in tonight's bedtime story are doing too.
0:00:37 > 0:00:39Let me tell you about them.
0:00:39 > 0:00:44The story is by M Christina Butler and Tina MacNaughton.
0:00:44 > 0:00:47And it's called "One Christmas Night."
0:00:47 > 0:00:50It was nearly Christmas, and
0:00:50 > 0:00:54little Hedgehog just could not wait.
0:00:54 > 0:00:59"Mince pies and Christmas cake! Yum-Yum," he laughed.
0:00:59 > 0:01:04"Oh, now I can put up the big, shiny star that Badger gave me."
0:01:04 > 0:01:06"Perfect," cried little Hedgehog,
0:01:06 > 0:01:09as he fixed the star to the very top of his tree.
0:01:09 > 0:01:11Then he opened Badger's card.
0:01:11 > 0:01:14"Oh, how lovely," he said.
0:01:14 > 0:01:17It had a huge, glittering Christmas tree on the front.
0:01:17 > 0:01:21"Oh, dear. My house isn't Christmassy."
0:01:21 > 0:01:24"And my tree doesn't sparkle like that," he sighed.
0:01:24 > 0:01:28Just then, ra-ta-ta-tat came at the door.
0:01:28 > 0:01:31"Happy Christmas," cried Mouse.
0:01:31 > 0:01:33"Thank you," said Hedgehog.
0:01:33 > 0:01:36"But, Mouse, I don't know what to do."
0:01:36 > 0:01:39"My house just isn't Christmassy at all!"
0:01:39 > 0:01:42"We'll soon fix that," Mouse smiled.
0:01:42 > 0:01:46"We can make pinecones sparkle with glitter," said Mouse,
0:01:46 > 0:01:48as they tramped into the woods.
0:01:48 > 0:01:52"Take cover," cried Hedgehog, as the cones came tumbling down.
0:01:52 > 0:01:55"There's holly for the fireplace," Mouse said.
0:01:55 > 0:02:00"Ouch!" squeaked little Hedgehog, "It has more prickles than me!"
0:02:00 > 0:02:03"Chestnuts and acorns and big bowls of berries,"
0:02:03 > 0:02:06they all sang as they marched home.
0:02:06 > 0:02:08Together, they glued and glittered
0:02:08 > 0:02:11until nuts and acorns twinkled like stars.
0:02:11 > 0:02:14And holly twigs shimmered red, green and gold.
0:02:14 > 0:02:17"Wow," cried little Hedgehog.
0:02:17 > 0:02:22"It's like a magic Christmassy cave," said Mouse.
0:02:22 > 0:02:26"But we have to go. We haven't wrapped our presents yet!"
0:02:26 > 0:02:29"Oh, no," squeaked little Hedgehog.
0:02:29 > 0:02:31"Presents!
0:02:31 > 0:02:34"I've forgotten to get presents for my friends!"
0:02:34 > 0:02:38Little Hedgehog thought hard.
0:02:38 > 0:02:42"Oh, I know! I can give this book to Badger.
0:02:42 > 0:02:45"I'll make a carrot cake for Rabbit.
0:02:45 > 0:02:47"And a night-time picture for Fox.
0:02:47 > 0:02:51"I can make stockings with nuts for the little ones,"
0:02:51 > 0:02:55chuckled little Hedgehog, pattering into the woods again.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58He gazed up at the glittering branches,
0:02:58 > 0:03:00as snowflakes floated past his nose.
0:03:00 > 0:03:04"And a bunch of twinkly twigs for Mouse," he smiled.
0:03:04 > 0:03:07Hedgehog wandered on and on through the trees,
0:03:07 > 0:03:10looking for the best twigs he could find.
0:03:10 > 0:03:11The wood grew darker,
0:03:11 > 0:03:14and the snowflakes whirled faster around him.
0:03:14 > 0:03:18"Phew," he gasped, struggling with the basket.
0:03:18 > 0:03:20"However shall I get home?"
0:03:20 > 0:03:22At last, the snow stopped.
0:03:22 > 0:03:25And a bright moon peeked above the trees.
0:03:25 > 0:03:28Pale, blue shadows flitted here and there,
0:03:28 > 0:03:32as little Hedgehog huffed and puffed through the snow.
0:03:32 > 0:03:34Then, in the stillness,
0:03:34 > 0:03:37he heard a pad-pad-padding noise,
0:03:37 > 0:03:41getting closer and closer until...
0:03:41 > 0:03:43Crash!
0:03:43 > 0:03:46"Eek!" yelled Fox, bumping into little Hedgehog.
0:03:46 > 0:03:51"He-he! You look like a walking Christmas tree!"
0:03:51 > 0:03:56Little Hedgehog and Fox chuckled and chatted all the way home.
0:03:56 > 0:03:58Fox put the presents round the tree.
0:03:58 > 0:04:01"Everything looks lovely," he said.
0:04:01 > 0:04:05But little Hedgehog was not sure.
0:04:05 > 0:04:08"There is still something missing."
0:04:08 > 0:04:13Suddenly, a loud knock came at the door,
0:04:13 > 0:04:16and in walked Badger, with Rabbit and the mice.
0:04:16 > 0:04:21"Of course," squeaked little Hedgehog, clapping his paws.
0:04:21 > 0:04:26"That's what was missing! All of my friends!"
0:04:26 > 0:04:28"Happy Christmas, everyone!"
0:04:28 > 0:04:32And that story was called "One Christmas Night."
0:04:32 > 0:04:35Hedgehog's home did look like a lovely Christmas cave.
0:04:35 > 0:04:38I do hope the animals enjoyed their presents.
0:04:38 > 0:04:42I've kept this present so that I still have one more
0:04:42 > 0:04:44Christmas surprise before I go to bed.
0:04:44 > 0:04:47I hope you have had the perfect Christmas,
0:04:47 > 0:04:50because it's time for you to go to bed,
0:04:50 > 0:04:53cuddle down with magical dreams of a lovely day.
0:04:53 > 0:04:56Good night, and Merry Christmas.
0:04:56 > 0:04:58Now, let's see...
