0:17:07 > 0:17:10Oh, hello. I'm Frances.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13I'm trying to work out how big the moon is.

0:17:13 > 0:17:15Do you know?

0:17:15 > 0:17:19When you look at it in the sky, it just looks tiny.

0:17:19 > 0:17:21Just about this size.

0:17:21 > 0:17:25But when you see pictures of the moon,

0:17:25 > 0:17:28it looks so big! As big as this!

0:17:30 > 0:17:34Maybe, if you look for the moon tonight,

0:17:34 > 0:17:37you can work out just how big it is.

0:17:37 > 0:17:42But it needs to be dark, as you can only see the moon at night-time.

0:17:42 > 0:17:45I wonder where it goes during the day?

0:17:45 > 0:17:47Do you know?

0:17:47 > 0:17:52Well, I know a story where one little girl won't stop

0:17:52 > 0:17:56until she finds out where the moon goes when it's daytime.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59This little girl is called Luna,

0:17:59 > 0:18:04and the story is by Ruth Martin and Olivier Latyk.

0:18:04 > 0:18:08It's called Where On Earth Is The Moon?

0:18:08 > 0:18:12On the night Luna was born,

0:18:12 > 0:18:15the full moon filled up the sky.

0:18:15 > 0:18:19Brighter than the stars, as round as a button

0:18:19 > 0:18:22and bigger than ever before.

0:18:22 > 0:18:24As she grew up,

0:18:24 > 0:18:25Luna watched for the moon

0:18:25 > 0:18:29and saw that it came to check on her at the time.

0:18:29 > 0:18:32At night, before she climbed into bed,

0:18:32 > 0:18:35Luna like to stand at her bedroom window

0:18:35 > 0:18:40with glossy moonlight puddling at her chilly feet.

0:18:40 > 0:18:43From there, she could see the moon

0:18:43 > 0:18:47sailing on a deep, dark sea of sky.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50The moon was so still

0:18:50 > 0:18:52and so pretty

0:18:52 > 0:18:56that Luna always felt soft waves

0:18:56 > 0:18:59of sleepiness sloshing over her

0:18:59 > 0:19:05as she drifted off to sleep.

0:19:05 > 0:19:07As she slept,

0:19:07 > 0:19:10Luna dreamed of crescent moons,

0:19:10 > 0:19:12of half moons,

0:19:12 > 0:19:14of full moons,

0:19:14 > 0:19:19but most of all of walking on the moon.

0:19:19 > 0:19:23But each morning when Luna woke up, the moon had gone.

0:19:23 > 0:19:27It was nowhere to be seen in the plain clear sky.

0:19:27 > 0:19:29No stars blinked,

0:19:29 > 0:19:33no shadows danced across the bedroom floor,

0:19:33 > 0:19:35and there were no sparkly moonbeams

0:19:35 > 0:19:39to spotlight Luna standing at the window.

0:19:39 > 0:19:43"Where does the moon go during the day?" thought Luna.

0:19:43 > 0:19:47She pondered, she puzzled, she wondered

0:19:47 > 0:19:52and she mooned about her bedroom thinking all day long.

0:19:52 > 0:19:56Dusk crept up while Luna thought.

0:19:56 > 0:19:59Creamy moonbeams spilled in through the window

0:19:59 > 0:20:02and the night-time fell.

0:20:02 > 0:20:05Now the moon was back, Luna promised herself

0:20:05 > 0:20:08she wouldn't let it disappear again.

0:20:08 > 0:20:10She would stay awake and not go to sleep

0:20:10 > 0:20:14and keep watch for where the moon might go.

0:20:14 > 0:20:19From the window, Luna could see the ocean far away in the distance.

0:20:19 > 0:20:22As dark as the sky,

0:20:22 > 0:20:24the water glistened,

0:20:24 > 0:20:29the waves whooshed and whooshed at the shore.

0:20:29 > 0:20:31Luna's dream took her down

0:20:31 > 0:20:34into the murky depths of the ocean.

0:20:34 > 0:20:39There, she found a fish that glowed and glistened like the moon,

0:20:39 > 0:20:41but no sign of the moon at all.

0:20:41 > 0:20:43The next morning,

0:20:43 > 0:20:47Luna woke up still wondering where the moon might go in the daytime.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49She wished the day away

0:20:49 > 0:20:53and promised herself she would find out that night.

0:20:53 > 0:20:56As night-time came, Luna looked out at the moon,

0:20:56 > 0:21:00beyond the forest and over the distant mountains.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03"Cruk, cruk, cruk," chirruped the crickets.

0:21:03 > 0:21:07"T-wit, t-woo!" hooted the owls.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10Luna tried as hard as she could to stay awake,

0:21:10 > 0:21:12but before long,

0:21:12 > 0:21:16she felt herself falling into a dreamy sleep.

0:21:16 > 0:21:18"Maybe," she thought,

0:21:18 > 0:21:21"the moon will roll down behind the mountains,

0:21:21 > 0:21:24"far, far away."

0:21:24 > 0:21:29Luna's dream took her floating high over the mountains.

0:21:29 > 0:21:32There, shimmering and shining,

0:21:32 > 0:21:37Luna saw a frozen lake as bright and beautiful as the moon,

0:21:37 > 0:21:40but no sign of the moon at all.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43Could there be a place Luna hadn't searched?

0:21:43 > 0:21:46Beyond the ocean? Higher than the mountains?

0:21:46 > 0:21:49Further than the clouds, where the moon might live?

0:21:49 > 0:21:53Luna's dream took her far, far away

0:21:53 > 0:21:55into space.

0:21:56 > 0:22:00There, dancing in the darkness,

0:22:00 > 0:22:04she found the moon at long last!

0:22:04 > 0:22:06It was brighter than the stars

0:22:06 > 0:22:09and round as a button

0:22:09 > 0:22:13and beautiful as it was on the night she was born.

0:22:13 > 0:22:17"Hurry home, Luna," whispered the moon softly.

0:22:17 > 0:22:20"It's bedtime."

0:22:22 > 0:22:26"But where do you go in the daytime?" Luna asked.

0:22:26 > 0:22:28And the moon replied,

0:22:28 > 0:22:31"I'm always here in space

0:22:31 > 0:22:34"watching over you.

0:22:34 > 0:22:38"You just can't see me in the daytime."

0:22:38 > 0:22:40That night and for ever after,

0:22:40 > 0:22:43Luna slept peacefully

0:22:43 > 0:22:47knowing that the moon lived in space

0:22:47 > 0:22:49and appeared in the sky

0:22:49 > 0:22:53to check on her when night-time fell.

0:22:55 > 0:22:58But being a curious little girl,

0:22:58 > 0:23:01Luna soon began to ask herself,

0:23:01 > 0:23:04"Where on earth is space?"

0:23:07 > 0:23:11And that story was called Where On Earth Is The Moon?

0:23:11 > 0:23:14So now you can sleep peacefully too,

0:23:14 > 0:23:16just like Luna.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19Knowing that the moon is living in space,

0:23:19 > 0:23:22looking over you.

0:23:22 > 0:23:26Maybe you can visit it in your dreams tonight too.

0:23:26 > 0:23:30Make sure you say hello to the moon from me.

0:23:30 > 0:23:32Sleep tight,

0:23:32 > 0:23:36and I'll see you again soon for another bedtime story.

0:23:36 > 0:23:38Night-night.

0:23:38 > 0:23:40So, Elephant,

0:23:40 > 0:23:44where will we go in our dreams tonight?

0:23:44 > 0:23:47Space...

0:23:47 > 0:23:51or just above the clouds?
