0:31:14 > 0:31:17The toys were telling me about their adventures.
0:31:17 > 0:31:21It's very important to listen to our friends and family, isn't it?
0:31:21 > 0:31:24Have you ever been with someone who doesn't seem to hear
0:31:24 > 0:31:25a word you are saying?
0:31:25 > 0:31:28I know someone who feels just like that.
0:31:28 > 0:31:31His name is Jack and I'm going to tell you about him
0:31:31 > 0:31:33in tonight's Bedtime Story.
0:31:33 > 0:31:38It's a book by Jessica Meserve and it's called Can Anybody Hear Me?
0:31:38 > 0:31:44This is Jack. He is very quiet. This is Jack's family.
0:31:44 > 0:31:46They are very noisy.
0:31:46 > 0:31:51In fact, they're so noisy that no-one seems to hear Jack.
0:31:51 > 0:31:55Jack said to Ma, "I'm going to the mountain today."
0:31:55 > 0:32:00Ma said, "One or two pancakes?" Jack said, "One, please."
0:32:00 > 0:32:01Ma gave him two.
0:32:01 > 0:32:03Jack said to Granny and Gramps,
0:32:03 > 0:32:06"I'm going to walk to the top of the mountain today."
0:32:06 > 0:32:10Granny said, "I'm going to knit you a nice, new sweater.
0:32:10 > 0:32:12"What colour, red or blue?"
0:32:12 > 0:32:18Jack said, "Blue, please." Granny said, "Red is a very good choice."
0:32:18 > 0:32:21Gramps said, "I'm going to write a song about red."
0:32:21 > 0:32:26Jack said to Pa, "I'm going to the top of the mountain today."
0:32:26 > 0:32:30Pa said, "Are you going fishing in the creek?"
0:32:30 > 0:32:34Jack said, "No, I'm going to the mountain."
0:32:34 > 0:32:36Pa said, "Catch some big ones."
0:32:36 > 0:32:39Jack said to June-bug and Jim-bob,
0:32:39 > 0:32:42"Do you want to come to the top of the mountain?"
0:32:42 > 0:32:46June-bug said to Jim-bob, "Jack wants to play hide and seek."
0:32:46 > 0:32:50Jack said, "No, I want to go to the mountain."
0:32:50 > 0:32:53Jim-bob said, "Count to 50, Jack, we'll hide."
0:32:53 > 0:32:57"I wonder if anybody heard me say I'm going to the mountain,"
0:32:57 > 0:33:00thought Jack. "I hope someone did."
0:33:00 > 0:33:05He set off on his own with just his best friend Chester for company.
0:33:05 > 0:33:06Past the barn.
0:33:06 > 0:33:11Across the pastures and over the whooshing, burbling waterfall.
0:33:11 > 0:33:16Up, up, up the mountain side. Until he reached the top of the mountain.
0:33:16 > 0:33:20The mountain top was still and quiet.
0:33:20 > 0:33:23Jack took a deep breath, filled his lungs
0:33:23 > 0:33:29and shouted with all his might, "Can anybody hear me?"
0:33:29 > 0:33:33Jack barely heard his voice fill the silence for a second,
0:33:33 > 0:33:37before it disappeared into the vast sky around him.
0:33:37 > 0:33:41Jack sighed, "I wish someone could hear me."
0:33:41 > 0:33:46Jack cuddled Chester and whispered, "You can hear me, can't you?"
0:33:46 > 0:33:49"Yes," said Chester, looking straight at him.
0:33:51 > 0:33:53"I have always heard you."
0:33:53 > 0:33:56Jack blinked with surprise, then smiled and said,
0:33:56 > 0:33:58"Do you want to play?"
0:33:58 > 0:34:01Chester smiled back and said, "Yes."
0:34:01 > 0:34:05Together, they slid down the snowy peak of the mountain
0:34:05 > 0:34:07and fell giggling into a heap of snow.
0:34:07 > 0:34:11At the bottom of the slope, they found a wolf cub all alone.
0:34:11 > 0:34:15"Do you think he's lost?" asked Jack. "Yes", said Chester.
0:34:15 > 0:34:17"We should call for his mother.
0:34:17 > 0:34:20"Maybe if we howl together, she'll hear us."
0:34:20 > 0:34:22Jack was doubtful.
0:34:22 > 0:34:26"No-one ever seems to hear me." "I can", said Chester.
0:34:26 > 0:34:27"Give it a go."
0:34:27 > 0:34:30So, together, they howled like wolves.
0:34:30 > 0:34:33"Ow, ow, ow, ooooow."
0:34:33 > 0:34:38Soon, over the hill, a much larger wolf bounded towards them.
0:34:38 > 0:34:41"There", said Chester, "I knew you could do it."
0:34:41 > 0:34:45Together, they walked down the mountain side towards home.
0:34:45 > 0:34:50Suddenly, a bear appeared on the path, towering above them.
0:34:50 > 0:34:52Jack and Chester froze.
0:34:52 > 0:34:56Chester's voice quivered, "If you look big and growl back,
0:34:56 > 0:34:58"you can scare him away," he said.
0:34:58 > 0:35:02Jack's legs were shaking, but he took a deep breath,
0:35:02 > 0:35:05filled his lungs and growled his biggest growl.
0:35:05 > 0:35:08"Grrrrr."
0:35:08 > 0:35:11The bear fled into the woods, Chester smiled,
0:35:11 > 0:35:17"You were very fierce and loud." Jack smiled back, "Thank you."
0:35:17 > 0:35:20Night fell.
0:35:20 > 0:35:23"Chester," Jack said, "I think we're lost."
0:35:24 > 0:35:28"If you can call a mother wolf and the scare away a bear,
0:35:28 > 0:35:31"you can yell for help," said Chester.
0:35:31 > 0:35:34Jack picked up Chester, he took a deep breath, filled his lungs
0:35:34 > 0:35:38and shouted out, "Can anybody hear me?"
0:35:38 > 0:35:41Only an owl hooted in response.
0:35:41 > 0:35:45"I think I'm still not noisy enough for my family to hear me,"
0:35:45 > 0:35:46said Jack.
0:35:46 > 0:35:49But then, Jack saw lanterns, bobbing in the distance.
0:35:49 > 0:35:52He heard the voices of Ma and Pa.
0:35:52 > 0:35:55"Jack, where are you?" "Jack, can you hear us?"
0:35:55 > 0:36:01Jack called with all his might, "I'm over here, I'm over here."
0:36:01 > 0:36:03The voices of his family drew closer.
0:36:03 > 0:36:08And Jack smiled, "They can hear me, Chester, just like you."
0:36:08 > 0:36:12Pa cried, "We were so worried, no-one knew where you were."
0:36:12 > 0:36:17"Chester knew where I was," Jack said. "Chester?" Pa laughed.
0:36:17 > 0:36:20"Come on, it's time for supper," said Ma.
0:36:20 > 0:36:23Chester winked at Jack.
0:36:23 > 0:36:26Back at the ranch, Jack's family all talked at once,
0:36:26 > 0:36:27asking where he had been.
0:36:27 > 0:36:30Jack took a deep breath, filling his lungs
0:36:30 > 0:36:34and, with his biggest voice, he shouted, "Quiet please!"
0:36:34 > 0:36:41His family became as quiet as mice. Then Jack began his story.
0:36:41 > 0:36:44And this time, they all heard every word.
0:36:45 > 0:36:49And that story was called Can Anybody Hear Me?
0:36:49 > 0:36:52I'm so pleased that Jack's family finally heard him.
0:36:52 > 0:36:56I think I'll sit and listen to the toys for a little longer.
0:36:56 > 0:37:00And while I do that, I think it's time you go to sleep.
0:37:00 > 0:37:02Good night and I'll see you soon.
