0:15:08 > 0:15:09Come on!

0:15:09 > 0:15:13Oh, hello. I'm Dan. I was stretching, and warming

0:15:13 > 0:15:15for tonight's Bedtime Story.

0:15:15 > 0:15:18Why don't you try one with me? Yeah, that's it.

0:15:18 > 0:15:23I know someone else stretching and warming up. His name is Ambrose,

0:15:23 > 0:15:25and I'll tell you ALL about him.

0:15:25 > 0:15:27This story is by Tor Freeman,

0:15:27 > 0:15:31and it's called, Ambrose Goes For Gold.

0:15:31 > 0:15:33It was a beautiful, sunny morning,

0:15:33 > 0:15:37and Ambrose had been awake since dawn.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40He was far too excited to sleep.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43It was the day of the Great Insect Games.

0:15:43 > 0:15:47And, for the very first time, Ambrose was big enough to compete.

0:15:47 > 0:15:50He couldn't WAIT to win a shiny gold medal,

0:15:50 > 0:15:53and had been practising very hard.

0:15:53 > 0:15:56Ambrose had done his lifting, his stretching,

0:15:56 > 0:15:58and his toning, and firming.

0:15:58 > 0:16:01He'd even done his to-ing and fro-ing.

0:16:01 > 0:16:05"I wonder which game I will win?" said Ambrose.

0:16:05 > 0:16:08"I'm sure to be the best at something."

0:16:08 > 0:16:12As he arrived, the judge called the insects to gather round.

0:16:12 > 0:16:15"Welcome to the Great Insect Games!" he cried.

0:16:15 > 0:16:20"Today's first event will be the long jump."

0:16:20 > 0:16:23"Hooray!" said Ambrose, "I'm a good jumper."

0:16:23 > 0:16:25He did some little hops for practice.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28Ambrose watched the leaf beetle skitter.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31He watched the ant leap.

0:16:31 > 0:16:34And when it was Ambrose's turn, he jumped VERY far!

0:16:34 > 0:16:38But NOBODY could jump further than the grasshopper.

0:16:38 > 0:16:40"Oh, no!" sighed Ambrose.

0:16:40 > 0:16:43He felt very disappointed.

0:16:43 > 0:16:47"Don't feel sad," said the kindly grasshopper.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50"I am a grasshopper. Jumping's what I do best.

0:16:50 > 0:16:53"Everybody is good at something".

0:16:53 > 0:16:55"Well," thought Ambrose.

0:16:55 > 0:17:00"I may not be a good jumper, but I expect I'm a good skater."

0:17:00 > 0:17:03Feeling much brighter, he strode over to the pond.

0:17:03 > 0:17:07The waterskating contest had just begun,

0:17:07 > 0:17:11and Ambrose watched the insects glide round and round.

0:17:11 > 0:17:13"Well, this looks easy," he thought.

0:17:13 > 0:17:17But, oh dear! It wasn't easy.

0:17:17 > 0:17:22"Don't worry," said the pond skater, helping Ambrose out of the water.

0:17:22 > 0:17:25"I am a pond skater, and skating is what I do best."

0:17:25 > 0:17:29"Well," thought Ambrose. "I may not be a good skater,

0:17:29 > 0:17:33"but I KNOW I'm a good runner". And off he went to join the race.

0:17:33 > 0:17:36Bang! They were off. The butterfly was fast,

0:17:36 > 0:17:40the ladybird faster, Ambrose faster still!

0:17:40 > 0:17:42He raced towards the finish.

0:17:42 > 0:17:45But nobody was as fast as the tiger beetle.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48"Oh, dear!" puffed Ambrose.

0:17:48 > 0:17:50He had been so close.

0:17:50 > 0:17:53"Chin up," said the tiger beetle.

0:17:53 > 0:17:57"Tiger beetles are ALWAYS fast. Running is what we do best."

0:17:57 > 0:18:00"Well," thought Ambrose "I may not be fast enough,

0:18:00 > 0:18:03but I'm sure to be STRONG enough."

0:18:03 > 0:18:06He felt ready to win the strong bug contest.

0:18:06 > 0:18:09The grain of sand? No problem!

0:18:09 > 0:18:12The berry? A bit more puff.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14Next came the acorn.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17Ambrose strained, and he pushed,

0:18:17 > 0:18:22and he pulled his very hardest. But the acorn would not budge.

0:18:22 > 0:18:25"Good try, Ambrose," said the rhino beetle.

0:18:25 > 0:18:27"A rhino beetle is a strong beetle.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30"Pushing and lifting is what we do best.

0:18:30 > 0:18:34"Don't worry," he said. "Your turn will come."

0:18:34 > 0:18:38But time was running out, and Ambrose was getting tired.

0:18:38 > 0:18:41"One last chance," he whispered,

0:18:41 > 0:18:45as he braced himself for the loud noise competition.

0:18:45 > 0:18:47Oh, WHAT a lot of noise!

0:18:47 > 0:18:53The worm warbled, the bee buzzed, and Ambrose made SUCH a clatter.

0:18:53 > 0:18:57But nobody was as noisy as the cicada.

0:18:57 > 0:19:00"I suppose being noisy is what cicadas do best,"

0:19:00 > 0:19:04said Ambrose in his smallest, saddest voice.

0:19:04 > 0:19:06Ambrose walked slowly away.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09"Everyone has a gold medal," he sniffed.

0:19:09 > 0:19:13"Everyone, except me. I'm just not at good at anything.

0:19:13 > 0:19:17"My legs are not springy. I fall over when I skate.

0:19:17 > 0:19:20"I can't run quickly, and I'm not that strong.

0:19:20 > 0:19:23"I'm not even very noisy."

0:19:23 > 0:19:25Feeling tired and unhappy,

0:19:25 > 0:19:28Ambrose sat down, and nibbled on a twig.

0:19:28 > 0:19:32It was a nice twig, so he had another. And another.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35And then another. Suddenly, there came a loud voice.

0:19:35 > 0:19:40"And the winner of the twig eating competition is...Ambrose!"

0:19:42 > 0:19:45It was the judge! Ambrose had won!

0:19:45 > 0:19:50He had REALLY won his very own, very shiny gold medal.

0:19:50 > 0:19:52"Hip, hip, hooray for Ambrose!"

0:19:52 > 0:19:54all the insects cried.

0:19:54 > 0:19:58"We KNEW you could do it!" said the kindly grasshopper.

0:19:58 > 0:20:02"But, how did you know?" asked Ambrose. Everyone laughed.

0:20:02 > 0:20:06"Because, Ambrose, you're a termite.

0:20:06 > 0:20:10"And EATING is what termites do best!"

0:20:10 > 0:20:13As the sun went down, the fireflies came out,

0:20:13 > 0:20:15and the celebrations began.

0:20:15 > 0:20:20Ambrose danced until his little legs tingled.

0:20:20 > 0:20:23"That grasshopper was right," thought Ambrose.

0:20:23 > 0:20:27"Everybody REALLY IS good at something.

0:20:27 > 0:20:32"But I MIGHT practise my skating for next year, just in case."

0:20:33 > 0:20:36That story was called, Ambrose Goes For Gold.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38Everybody IS good at something.

0:20:38 > 0:20:42I expect YOU'RE good at a lot of things, aren't you? Yeah.

0:20:42 > 0:20:46I'm quite good at eating. A bit like Ambrose.

0:20:46 > 0:20:48I'm practising, so I CAN get even better.

0:20:48 > 0:20:52After all that fun and games, it's time for you to go to sleep.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55Good night, I'll see you soon.
