0:00:12 > 0:00:16There's a rocket, a robot and over here, there's a monkey.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19I'd like to be a monkey. Or a rocket. What do you think?

0:00:19 > 0:00:23It'd be fun. There's a boy in tonight's bedtime story

0:00:23 > 0:00:25who thinks he can be all sorts of things.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27Let me tell you about him.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30The story is called When I Woke Up I Was A Hippopotamus,

0:00:30 > 0:00:33and it's by Tom MacRae and Ross Collins.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36When I woke up I was a hippopotamus!

0:00:36 > 0:00:40Yawning in the morning, I raised up my sleepy head,

0:00:40 > 0:00:44then took one look out of the window and got straight back into bed.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46"Get up!" said Mum, "or you will be late!"

0:00:46 > 0:00:50But hippos in their sludge don't get up in the morning,

0:00:50 > 0:00:51and so I didn't budge.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54At breakfast, I was a robot.

0:00:54 > 0:00:58My tummy wasn't hungry, I wasn't programmed how to eat.

0:00:58 > 0:01:02My mouth was made of metal, like my nose and knees and feet.

0:01:02 > 0:01:07"Quick, quick!" said Dad. "Come on! Eat up! We've really got to scoot!"

0:01:07 > 0:01:09But robots can't eat cornflakes,

0:01:09 > 0:01:11Dad's words did not compute.

0:01:11 > 0:01:15When it was time to go to school, I was a...statue.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17I couldn't move a muscle,

0:01:17 > 0:01:18I couldn't blink an eye,

0:01:18 > 0:01:20I couldn't lift a finger,

0:01:20 > 0:01:21I couldn't breathe a sigh.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23Mum pushed, then pulled.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25Dad pulled, then pushed.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28They heaved with all their might,

0:01:28 > 0:01:30but my legs were made of granite

0:01:30 > 0:01:33and my feet were stuck down tight.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35When I got to school,

0:01:35 > 0:01:36I was a...monkey.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39A cheeky little monkey, thought a table was a tree.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42I had to climb upon it, just to see what I could see.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46I couldn't sit and listen, and my work was rather slack.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49And when the teacher told me off,

0:01:49 > 0:01:52I told her off right back!

0:01:52 > 0:01:54When it was playtime,

0:01:54 > 0:01:55I was a...monster!

0:01:55 > 0:01:58- SCREAMING - A scritchy-scratchy monster

0:01:58 > 0:02:00with ten scritchy-scratchy claws.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03I had 50 scritchy-scratchy teeth

0:02:03 > 0:02:06in scritchy-scratchy jaws.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10The girls all screamed, the boys all ran. My mouth went munchy-crunch!

0:02:10 > 0:02:13Then teacher told me off again

0:02:13 > 0:02:15so I had her for my lunch!

0:02:15 > 0:02:18When it was time to go home, I was a...rocket ship.

0:02:18 > 0:02:19I zoomed up out of orbit.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22Countdown - five, four, three, two, one.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25I was nearly reaching light speed.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27Poor old Dad, he had to run.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30My pistons pumped, my jet packs jumped,

0:02:30 > 0:02:31all full of super fuel,

0:02:31 > 0:02:35I had to get to Planet Home and far from Planet School.

0:02:35 > 0:02:40When I was in my bedroom, I was a...giant.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43My hands were huge as houses.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45My beard was big and blue.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47I was hunting for a human

0:02:47 > 0:02:48to put in my human stew.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50I was crashing round my bedroom -

0:02:50 > 0:02:53well, that's just how giants play -

0:02:53 > 0:02:55we're big and loud and noisy,

0:02:55 > 0:02:56we don't know another way.

0:02:56 > 0:03:01But Mum and Dad weren't happy and the yelled out, "Keep it down!"

0:03:01 > 0:03:02But my giant feet were busy

0:03:02 > 0:03:04as they crushed a tiny town.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07"That's it!" cried Mum and Dad,

0:03:07 > 0:03:10"You're louder than ten boys!"

0:03:10 > 0:03:14and they stomped upstairs to tell me off for making so much noise.

0:03:14 > 0:03:18When Mum and Dad came in, they were dragons.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20They snarled and growled

0:03:20 > 0:03:22and stamped and howled

0:03:22 > 0:03:23and nearly broke the door.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26Their wings caught in the curtains

0:03:26 > 0:03:28and their tails scratched on the floor.

0:03:28 > 0:03:32Dad blew a giant smoke ring with an angry, rumbling cough.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35Mum wagged a scaly finger,

0:03:35 > 0:03:38then they really told me off.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40I stared up at my mum and dad

0:03:40 > 0:03:42and didn't feel so brave.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45"I was having fun pretending, I didn't mean to misbehave."

0:03:45 > 0:03:47"Of all the wondrous things,"

0:03:47 > 0:03:49said Mum, "that you pretend to be,

0:03:49 > 0:03:51"why can't you be a nice thing?"

0:03:51 > 0:03:53So I pretended I was me!

0:03:53 > 0:03:57We had a lovely evening. I helped my dad with tea.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00Then I read my mum a story as I sat upon her knee.

0:04:00 > 0:04:04At bath time we played pirates and we plotted pirate schemes

0:04:04 > 0:04:09then I snuggled in my duvet and dreamed amazing dreams.

0:04:09 > 0:04:14And that story was called When I Woke Up I Was A Hippopotamus.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17I wonder what you'll be when you wake up tomorrow morning -

0:04:17 > 0:04:20a helpful monkey or a tidying-up robot.
