0:27:15 > 0:27:18Hello! I'm Simon.

0:27:18 > 0:27:19Do you like my stick?

0:27:19 > 0:27:22What do you think I can do with it?

0:27:22 > 0:27:24In tonight's bedtime story,

0:27:24 > 0:27:28Stanley turns his stick into lots of amazing different things.

0:27:28 > 0:27:31The story is by John Hegley and Neal Layton

0:27:31 > 0:27:34and it's called Stanley's Stick.

0:27:34 > 0:27:39Stanley stands on Stockport station with his stick.

0:27:39 > 0:27:42Stanley ALWAYS carries his stick with him.

0:27:42 > 0:27:47Stanley's stick was once part of something tall and grand

0:27:47 > 0:27:49and it will never return.

0:27:49 > 0:27:52But it can still be a stick as best it can.

0:27:54 > 0:27:56Stanley has a lot of stick activity.

0:27:56 > 0:27:59Like pretending the stick is a whistle

0:27:59 > 0:28:01or a banana that is quite straight.

0:28:01 > 0:28:04You don't have to be great to be great.

0:28:04 > 0:28:08Like pretending the stick is a match to catch the world aflame.

0:28:08 > 0:28:11There is game after sticky game.

0:28:11 > 0:28:14"Look! It's a dinosaur that isn't extinct!

0:28:14 > 0:28:17"It's a 'Stickosaurus'!"

0:28:17 > 0:28:18Grrr!

0:28:18 > 0:28:22Stanley has tried out some names for his stick,

0:28:22 > 0:28:25like Starry and...Moon,

0:28:25 > 0:28:28but those names were all the wrong shape.

0:28:28 > 0:28:31For a while, he likes 'Stirry'.

0:28:31 > 0:28:35But that's better for a spoon.

0:28:35 > 0:28:38Stanley's stick is good for writing in the sand

0:28:38 > 0:28:41in languages only Stanley can understand.

0:28:41 > 0:28:44And four times now he has used it to pick up slugs

0:28:44 > 0:28:47from pathway, platform and pavement,

0:28:47 > 0:28:50thus saving them from a fate worse than feet.

0:28:50 > 0:28:53Stanley's friend Bertie has some string

0:28:53 > 0:28:56and, sometimes, they tie the string to the stick's end

0:28:56 > 0:28:58and go pretend fishing.

0:28:58 > 0:29:03"Because the fish are pretend, no fish get hurt," says Bertie.

0:29:04 > 0:29:07So here is Stanley standing on the station,

0:29:07 > 0:29:11taking his stick for a short stay at the side of the sea

0:29:11 > 0:29:12with his mum and dad.

0:29:12 > 0:29:15The train pulls in.

0:29:15 > 0:29:20Down at the sea, Stanley goes down to the side of the tide.

0:29:20 > 0:29:25His folks take stock of Stanley standing in the sand, stick in hand.

0:29:25 > 0:29:27What's he doing?

0:29:27 > 0:29:29Maybe the boy thinks it's time

0:29:29 > 0:29:32for the stick to be taken for someone else to enjoy.

0:29:32 > 0:29:36Stanley hurls the stick into the wide tide.

0:29:36 > 0:29:39Gosh! What a tiny splosh

0:29:39 > 0:29:42for something that has been so big in Stanley's days.

0:29:42 > 0:29:46The sea picks up the stick and tucks it into itself.

0:29:46 > 0:29:49Stanley is stickless.

0:29:50 > 0:29:53The next morning, back at their spot on the beach,

0:29:53 > 0:29:55the tide is out.

0:29:55 > 0:29:58Stanley treads towards the spreading sea.

0:29:58 > 0:30:01Boats ride seaback out on the distance.

0:30:01 > 0:30:05Stanley decides to look for interesting sticks,

0:30:05 > 0:30:08for other sticks which have been carried twiggy back

0:30:08 > 0:30:10upon the turning tide.

0:30:10 > 0:30:15Soon, he stumbles upon a stick, alone upon the shore.

0:30:15 > 0:30:19It is quite different from the stick he had before.

0:30:19 > 0:30:23The stick is an unusual saxophone.

0:30:23 > 0:30:26MUSIC PLAYS

0:30:26 > 0:30:31Stanley thinks of home and begins to blurt out a tune for Bertie.

0:30:31 > 0:30:35Now, Stanley stares through his stick telescope at the sea.

0:30:35 > 0:30:37It is wonky

0:30:37 > 0:30:40and this stick Stanley knows the name of.

0:30:58 > 0:30:59What was that?

0:30:59 > 0:31:02You want to travel to the moon like Stanley did?

0:31:02 > 0:31:06Well, maybe tomorrow, because now, it is time for you to go to bed.
