0:00:08 > 0:00:10Hello. I'm Bernard.
0:00:10 > 0:00:15Tonight's bedtime story is all about sharing with those who don't
0:00:15 > 0:00:17have as much as us.
0:00:17 > 0:00:20It is called One Winter's Night,
0:00:20 > 0:00:24and it's by Claire Freedman and Simon Mendez.
0:00:24 > 0:00:27It was deepest, darkest winter.
0:00:27 > 0:00:31Wild snow blizzards had howled through the woods for days,
0:00:31 > 0:00:36and the animals had been hiding in their dens, cold and hungry.
0:00:36 > 0:00:42But, tonight, suddenly all was quiet, and the sky was clear.
0:00:42 > 0:00:46Fox peeped from his snowy den.
0:00:46 > 0:00:51Out of the darkness appeared a lone figure, a badger,
0:00:51 > 0:00:53gleaming silver in the moonlight.
0:00:53 > 0:00:57"Hello," Badger called, gently.
0:00:57 > 0:00:59"Please, I am so hungry.
0:00:59 > 0:01:02"Do you have any food to share?"
0:01:02 > 0:01:04Fox frowned.
0:01:04 > 0:01:08He had hardly enough food for himself.
0:01:08 > 0:01:11But there was such a kind look in Badger's eyes,
0:01:11 > 0:01:14Fox felt he had to help him.
0:01:14 > 0:01:16"Wait here," he said.
0:01:16 > 0:01:19"Thank you," Badger smiled,
0:01:19 > 0:01:23gratefully taking the few berries Fox offered.
0:01:23 > 0:01:26Then, off went Badger, into the snow,
0:01:26 > 0:01:30head bent against the bitter wind.
0:01:30 > 0:01:34Mouse was much too cold and hungry to sleep.
0:01:34 > 0:01:37As she tossed and turned in her bed,
0:01:37 > 0:01:40suddenly she heard footsteps outside.
0:01:40 > 0:01:43"My, oh my," she gasped.
0:01:43 > 0:01:46"Who is out at this time of night?"
0:01:46 > 0:01:50"Hello," a silvery figure called, softly.
0:01:50 > 0:01:54"Please, I am very hungry, do you have any spare food?"
0:01:54 > 0:01:58"I have nothing at all," Mouse grumbled.
0:01:58 > 0:02:00There is no food anywhere.
0:02:00 > 0:02:03"I understand," Badger nodded.
0:02:03 > 0:02:05And he turned to go.
0:02:06 > 0:02:13Mouse listened as the heavy crunch of Badger's footsteps slowly faded.
0:02:13 > 0:02:15Badger had seemed so gentle and caring,
0:02:15 > 0:02:19yet, she had turned him away.
0:02:19 > 0:02:22"Wait!" Mouse scampered after him.
0:02:22 > 0:02:25"Hare lives nearby, maybe she can help."
0:02:25 > 0:02:30Together, Mouse and Badger struggled to Hare's house.
0:02:31 > 0:02:35The wind whipped, snowflakes swirled,
0:02:35 > 0:02:37but somehow, even in the shadowy dark,
0:02:37 > 0:02:40Mouse felt safe beside Badger,
0:02:40 > 0:02:44his warm eyes twinkling like bright stars.
0:02:45 > 0:02:49Hare was rather cross to be woken up, and she didn't really
0:02:49 > 0:02:55want to share the small handful of berries she'd saved with anyone.
0:02:55 > 0:02:59"I know it's late, Hare, but I told Badger you might help,"
0:02:59 > 0:03:00Mouse whispered.
0:03:00 > 0:03:03"He's freezing cold and starving,
0:03:03 > 0:03:05"and so am I."
0:03:05 > 0:03:09"I suppose you had both better come in, then," said Hare.
0:03:09 > 0:03:16Mouse, Hare and Badger nibbled on Hare's last few berries.
0:03:16 > 0:03:20Hare thought back to when times were much kinder,
0:03:20 > 0:03:23then she and Mouse had spent happy days together,
0:03:23 > 0:03:26sharing everything.
0:03:26 > 0:03:28Hare missed those times.
0:03:28 > 0:03:32All too soon, Badger thanked them and left.
0:03:32 > 0:03:38Without him, they felt colder and the night darker.
0:03:38 > 0:03:43"Poor Badger, it's freezing outside," Mouse sighed,
0:03:43 > 0:03:46peering out into the frosty darkness.
0:03:46 > 0:03:49"I hope he will be all right," Hare said, anxiously.
0:03:50 > 0:03:54Just they spotted a shadowy figure moving slowly towards them.
0:03:54 > 0:03:57"It's Fox!" cried Mouse.
0:03:57 > 0:04:00"What are you doing here?" Hare asked him.
0:04:00 > 0:04:03"I am searching for Badger," Fox explained.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06"He was so exhausted and hungry."
0:04:06 > 0:04:08Mouse and Hare nodded.
0:04:08 > 0:04:11They were worried about Badger, too.
0:04:11 > 0:04:15"I think we should go out and look for him," Mouse said.
0:04:15 > 0:04:21In the shimmering snow, Badger's footprints were pools of silver.
0:04:21 > 0:04:23The blizzard blew stronger still,
0:04:23 > 0:04:25as the three friends followed
0:04:25 > 0:04:31Badger's silvery tracks deeper and deeper into the woods.
0:04:31 > 0:04:34"Over there," pointed Fox, at last.
0:04:34 > 0:04:39And there was Badger, asleep amongst the roots of a tree,
0:04:39 > 0:04:41covered in a frosting of snow.
0:04:41 > 0:04:44"He is frozen," gasped Mouse.
0:04:44 > 0:04:46"Poor Badger."
0:04:46 > 0:04:49"We must help him," Fox cried.
0:04:49 > 0:04:51Quietly, so as not to wake him,
0:04:51 > 0:04:57Mouse and Hare gathered some soft mosses and leaves for Badger's bed.
0:04:57 > 0:05:00Fox dug a snowy shelter to keep him snug,
0:05:00 > 0:05:03then together they curled up,
0:05:03 > 0:05:06cosy and warm in their snowy den.
0:05:06 > 0:05:08The wind howled,
0:05:08 > 0:05:10and the snow fell thickly,
0:05:10 > 0:05:13but they had never slept so well.
0:05:13 > 0:05:17The next morning, Badger had gone.
0:05:17 > 0:05:22The friends looked around and saw a trail of silvery footprints
0:05:22 > 0:05:25stretching far into the distance.
0:05:25 > 0:05:29"I wonder where Badger is going now," said Fox,
0:05:29 > 0:05:32"and if he will ever visit us again."
0:05:33 > 0:05:38But just then, Mouse gave an excited shout.
0:05:38 > 0:05:40"Look, over there!"
0:05:40 > 0:05:42Everyone stared in surprise.
0:05:42 > 0:05:46"What a wonderful gift," Fox gasped.
0:05:46 > 0:05:49"It's magic," Mouse whispered.
0:05:49 > 0:05:53Then Mouse spotted the tiny message.
0:05:53 > 0:05:56"In every caring thing you do,
0:05:56 > 0:05:58"the love you give comes back to you."
0:06:00 > 0:06:03"It's from Badger," Hare cried.
0:06:03 > 0:06:06"We all knew he was special."
0:06:06 > 0:06:08The sun suddenly burst through
0:06:08 > 0:06:11and a million snowflakes sparkled,
0:06:11 > 0:06:14bright as the twinkle in Badger's smiling eyes.
0:06:16 > 0:06:20That story was called One Winter's Night.
0:06:20 > 0:06:22Weren't the pictures lovely?
0:06:22 > 0:06:27I'm glad Mouse, Hare and Fox have enough food to get them
0:06:27 > 0:06:31through winter now, thanks to Badger.
0:06:31 > 0:06:33Thank you, Badger.
0:06:33 > 0:06:37If you are kind to others, then they will be kind to you.
0:06:37 > 0:06:42Well, it's time for you all to snuggle down,
0:06:42 > 0:06:47and I will see you soon, for another bedtime story, very soon.
0:06:47 > 0:06:48Good night.
0:06:48 > 0:06:50Sweet dreams.
0:06:50 > 0:06:52Night, Badger.
