0:41:50 > 0:41:57.
0:42:08 > 0:42:10Hello, I'm Grandpa.
0:42:10 > 0:42:13I was just enjoying a delicious jam sandwich.
0:42:13 > 0:42:16There are some villagers in tonight's bedtime story
0:42:16 > 0:42:20who used a jam sandwich to solve a big problem.
0:42:20 > 0:42:24The story's called The Giant Jam Sandwich,
0:42:24 > 0:42:28and it's by John Vernon Lord and Janet Burroway.
0:42:29 > 0:42:32One hot summer in Itching Down,
0:42:32 > 0:42:364 million wasps flew into town.
0:42:36 > 0:42:39They drove the picnickers away,
0:42:39 > 0:42:44they chased the farmers from their hay.
0:42:45 > 0:42:48They stung Lord Swell on his fat, bald pate.
0:42:50 > 0:42:54They dived and hummed and buzzed and ate.
0:42:55 > 0:42:59And the noisy, nasty nuisance grew
0:42:59 > 0:43:03till the villagers cried, "What can we do?"
0:43:03 > 0:43:06So they called a meeting in the village hall,
0:43:06 > 0:43:10and Mayor Muddlenut asked them all, "What can we do?"
0:43:10 > 0:43:13And they said, "Good question."
0:43:13 > 0:43:16But nobody had a good suggestion.
0:43:16 > 0:43:19Then Bap the Baker leapt to his feet
0:43:19 > 0:43:23and cried, "What do wasps like best to eat?
0:43:23 > 0:43:27"Strawberry jam! Now, wait a minute.
0:43:27 > 0:43:32"If we made a giant sandwich, we could trap them in it."
0:43:32 > 0:43:35The gentlemen cheered, the ladies squealed,
0:43:35 > 0:43:40and Farmer Seed said, "Use my field."
0:43:40 > 0:43:43Bap gave instructions for the making of the dough.
0:43:43 > 0:43:47"Mix flour from above, and yeast from below.
0:43:47 > 0:43:50"Salt from the seaside, water from the spout.
0:43:50 > 0:43:54"Now thump it, bump it, bang it about."
0:43:54 > 0:43:56While they were working and working hard,
0:43:56 > 0:43:59some more made a tablecloth out in the yard.
0:43:59 > 0:44:03When they were done, the dough was left to rise
0:44:03 > 0:44:06till the loaf was a mountain in shape and size.
0:44:06 > 0:44:08They hitched it up with a bit of fuss
0:44:08 > 0:44:11to tractors, cars and the village bus
0:44:11 > 0:44:14and took it to the oven they had made on the hill.
0:44:14 > 0:44:1850 cookers in an old brick mill.
0:44:18 > 0:44:21For hours and hours they let it cook.
0:44:21 > 0:44:24It swelled inside and the windows shook.
0:44:24 > 0:44:27It was piping hot when they took it out
0:44:27 > 0:44:30and the villagers raised a mighty shout.
0:44:30 > 0:44:33"Isn't it crusty? Aren't we clever?"
0:44:33 > 0:44:36But the wasps were just as bad as ever.
0:44:36 > 0:44:40The loaf was left to cool and then the people watched
0:44:40 > 0:44:45while six strong men took a great big saw and sliced right through.
0:44:45 > 0:44:49Everybody clapped, and they cut slice two.
0:44:51 > 0:44:53The village bus, they all agreed,
0:44:53 > 0:44:56would spoil the fields of Farmer Seed
0:44:56 > 0:44:58so eight fine horses pulled the bread
0:44:58 > 0:45:01to where the picnic cloth was spread.
0:45:01 > 0:45:04A truck drew up and dumped out butter
0:45:04 > 0:45:07and they spread it out with a flap and a flutter.
0:45:07 > 0:45:10Spoons and spades slap and slam,
0:45:10 > 0:45:13and they did the same with the strawberry jam.
0:45:13 > 0:45:16Meanwhile, high above the field,
0:45:16 > 0:45:19six flying machines whirred and wheeled,
0:45:19 > 0:45:23ready for the wasps to take the bait.
0:45:23 > 0:45:27And then there was nothing to do but wait.
0:45:27 > 0:45:30Suddenly, the sky was humming.
0:45:30 > 0:45:34All 4 million wasps were coming.
0:45:34 > 0:45:38They smelt that jam, they dived and struck,
0:45:38 > 0:45:41and they ate so much they all got stuck.
0:45:41 > 0:45:44The other slice came down, kersplat!
0:45:44 > 0:45:48On top of the wasps, and that was that.
0:45:48 > 0:45:51There were only three that got away,
0:45:51 > 0:45:54and where they are now, I cannot say.
0:45:54 > 0:45:57But they never came back to Itching Down,
0:45:57 > 0:46:00which is not a waspish sort of town,
0:46:00 > 0:46:03but a very nice place to dance and play,
0:46:03 > 0:46:06and that's what the villagers did that day.
0:46:06 > 0:46:09And what became of the sandwich?
0:46:09 > 0:46:11Well, in Itching Down they like to tell
0:46:11 > 0:46:14how the birds flew off with it in their beaks
0:46:14 > 0:46:18and had a feast for 100 weeks.
0:46:20 > 0:46:23Well, that story was called The Giant Jam Sandwich.
0:46:23 > 0:46:26I'm glad there are no wasps around tonight.
0:46:26 > 0:46:29It means I can enjoy my own jam sandwich,
0:46:29 > 0:46:32and then I'll buzz off for a little lie down.
0:46:32 > 0:46:36Hope you'll join me again soon for another bedtime story.
0:46:36 > 0:46:38Good night.
